The Smile's 2024 Tour Rehearsal Setup

On March 5 and March 6, The Smile shared photos taken by Ade B during rehearsals for the band's 2024 tour dates. In the photos, the band are set up in Air Studios’ Lyndhurst Hall. It's a space where Jonny has frequently recorded orchestras, including for the Phantom Thread soundtrack. A photo from circa-2014 revealed that Radiohead’s string arrangements for Spectre (and possibly Man of War) were also recorded in the room.

The Smile’s live setup largely resembles the one they used for their tour dates last year. This isn’t a surprise, since many songs from the band’s latest album were written on the road. However, there is some new gear which seems to be intended for material off the new album. Further down in this post, we’ll list all of the gear, but we’ll highlight the changes first.

Electric Cello and Viola

Almost certainly the biggest surprise is that Jonny has added an electric cello and an electric viola to his setup. In the past, Jonny has occasionally played bowed string instruments on recordings, but they were always acoustic instruments, and he's never brought them on tour. Most of the time, Jonny only used his viola to sketch out string arrangements, which were then recorded by other players. And at live shows, Jonny has always bowed his electric guitar or bass to emulate those string arrangements, whether it's the harmonics on Pyramid Song or the col lengo crunch on Burn The Witch.

However, Jonny has started to play the cello more regularly in the past few years. In an interview from the 2010s, Jonny mentioned that he could make noises that he’s happy with on a cello, but claimed his left hand isn’t precise enough to perform with it. Then in 2019, he mentioned that, compared to viola, the cello "feels much more natural to hold and so much easier to make a nice sound on — I only wish I had moved on to it when I was a kid” (The Times). In 2021, he was credited with cello in the liner notes for the Power of the Dog soundtrack, applying banjo-style technique to the instrument. And this year, he was credited with cello in the liner notes for Wall of Eyes. In fact, Jonny can be seen playing his acoustic cello in a couple of polaroids posted in March 2023, during the recording of the new album.

Digital “Upright” Piano

On every tour since 1997, Radiohead have brought an acoustic upright piano on tour. Usually they brought a Yamaha U1, though more recently they’ve favored a Kemble KC121 (essentially a U1 built at Kemble’s factory in the UK, rather than by Yamaha in Japan). The same was true for Atoms for Peace shows in 2010 and 2013. The Smile followed this trend, bringing an acoustic upright along for all of their tour dates from 2021-2023.

However, given how few of the Smile's songs require piano, it’s understandable that they’d switch to a digital instrument instead. The one they chose is a Nord Grand digital piano, which features fairly authentic piano hammer-action made by the piano maker Kawai.

For some solo shows in support of Anima, Thom brought a Waldorf Zarenbourg for sampled acoustic and electric piano sounds. Thom only played it for a couple songs each night, so it was understandable that he didn’t want to tour with an acoustic upright. However, it’s interesting that The Smile are still using their vintage Rhodes electric piano, rather than using the Nord Grand for Rhodes sounds in addition to acoustic piano sounds. Perhaps keyboard action is the reason: the hammer action of the Nord might be accurate for piano, but it’s probably a little heavy for Rhodes playing. Plus it’s clear that the band enjoy having a lot of keyboard on stage to experiment with.

Sequential Prophet 6

One benefit of the digital piano is that its shorter stand leaves space for a keyboard to rest on top. For this tour, Thom has brought along his Prophet 6, which he previously used for the Suspiria soundtrack and for shows in support of Anima. This isn’t the first time that the band have mixed piano and synth. Thom did velcro a Dave Smith Instruments Tetra to Radiohead’s upright piano from 2012-2013. However, that synth saw little use, perhaps because of the Tetra’s minimal control layout.

The band now have three Prophet synths in their active setup: the Dave Smith Prophet ’08 beneath the modular, the Sequential Prophet 5 REV4 on top of the Rhodes piano, and the Sequential Prophet 6 on top of the digital piano.

Earthquaker Devices Blumes

In addition to the Earthquaker Devices Plumes overdrive on Thom’s board (note the green), it looks like he’s added a Blumes overdrive as well (the similarly-sized yellow box). The Blumes is intended as a bass-friendly version of the Plumes. Thom was already using the Plumes with his bass guitar for a very punchy sound, so it’ll be interesting to see how he uses the bassier Blumes.

Eventide Pitchfactor

It looks like Thom has added an Eventide Pitchfactor to his vocal pedalboard. It's in the spot where he had an Eventide H9 on the last tour, so it's likely that he was using the H9 for pitch shifting sounds. The H9 features all of the algorithms from the Pitchfactor (as well as the other Eventide pedals), but it has far fewer knobs so controlling it is more cumbersome.

Berlusconi era postfascista sionista sessista sfruttatore approfittatore megalomane e tutto il peggio che già sappiamo. Ha raccontato così tante volte le stesse cazzate che per molte persone queste sono diventate vere. Non lo rispettavo da vivo, ma molti dicono che dovrei farlo ora che è morto. Perché i morti meritano rispetto. Questa è un'altra cazzata partorita dal grande appiattimento culturale operato da lui e dai suoi collaboratori dal 1994 a oggi sfruttando i mezzi d'informazione e plasmando le leggi a suo piacimento. Un meccanismo che dopo un po' non ha avuto più bisogno di energia per macinare del marcio, andava avanti da solo, in automatico, iniettando oscenità e buffonate quotidiane nei cervelli, tanto da arrivare a dedicare a una persona del genere il lutto nazionale. Non che mi importi della nazione, concetto per me senza valore, ma il grande piano di pacificazione, del siamo tutti uguali, del "nel bene e nel male ha fatto la storia dell'Italia" e del santificare chi ha devastato un Paese, continua e continuerà finché esisterà una gestione del potere tale da dividerci in sfruttati e sfruttatori. Un sistema talmente corrotto e insito nella società che gli sfruttati piangeranno lo sfruttatore dopo la sua morte, mettendolo a pieno titolo dentro al grande insieme del "si stava meglio quando c'era lui." Di una cosa però quasi lo ringrazio, aver fatto capire a quelli della mia generazione da che parte stare. Quella degli ultimi, degli sfigati, degli emarginati, degli insoddisfatti, dei sempre arrabbiati. La stessa parte degli antifascisti, dei solidali, degli ironici, dei romanticamente illusi. Dei perennemente sconfitti, ma invidiosi mai.

So You’re the Commentator for your party’s Eurovision Experience?

Have we got a list for you! Semi Final 1 facts to tell during the postcards. Every artist in this semi final has had involvement in the songwriting process. (Note- I will be making one of these lists for the Grand Final as well, BUT with different facts for the qualifying acts.)

1. Albania- Ronela Hajati- Sekret. She is 32 years old, Studied ballet and piano as a child. Her first hit single was in May 2013. Lists Michael Jackson as her biggest influence.

2. Latvia- Citi Zeni- Eat Your Salad Formed in 2020 at a song-writing camp! Describe their genre as ‘Alternative Unicorn Pop’. Their goal is to deliver powerful, serious messages in a fun and cheeky way.

3. Lithuania- Monika Lui- Sentimentai- 34 years old, won a competition at age 16. She studied Jazz and also attended Berklee College of Music. She’s been a recording artist since 2013.

4. Switzerland- Marius Bear- Boys Do Cry- 29 years old, was a construction mechanic until being drafted into the army. A colleague told him he should pursue music, and he became a professional busker when he returned from the army. Recording debut in 2014. Won a Swiss music award for ‘Best Talent.

5. Slovenia- Last Pizza Slice(LPS)- Disko- Founded in 2018. Half the members are still in highschool, and they actually performed at their own prom shortly before the contest.

6. Ukraine- Kalush Orchestra- Stefania Named after the founding member’s hometown, Kalush Orchestra a rap group that adds folk elements to their music. They were the runner-up of the national final, chosen after the winner withdrew.

7. Bulgaria- Intelligent Music Project- Intention- Founded in 2012 with a long list of musicians over the years. Drummer Stoyan Yankulov has represented Bulgaria in both 2007 and 2013.

8. Netherlands- S10- De Diepte- 21 years old, she began her career in 2016. Her debut album won an Edison Award(Dutch equivalent to a Grammy). It is the first song in the Dutch language since 2010. In Dutch, her name would be pronounces ‘Esteen’

9. Moldova- Zdob si Zdub- These Eurovision legends barely need an introduction as they repped Moldova in 2005 and 2011, landing 6th place and 12th place respectively. Formed in 1994.

10. Portugal- Maro- Saudade, Saudade- 27 years old, she intended on becoming a vet before deciding to pursue music. She also went to the Berklee College of Music. She currently resides in LA, and made her recording debut in 2018.

11. Croatia- Mia Dimsic- Guilty Pleasure- 29 years old, she has a masters degree in translation studies. Started her musical career in 2014, siting Taylor Swift and Willie Nelson of two of her many influences.

12. Denmark- REDDI- The show- Debuted in 2021 and formed for the National final. They cite P!NK and Green Day as their influences. The drummer, Ihan Haydar, was part of Denmark’s 2012 act. The song is co-wrote by Julia Fabrin, a writer behind Emelie De Forest’s Only Teardrops.

13. Austria- Lumix ft. Pia Maria- Halo- 19 and 18 years old, respectively. Lumix has been a DJ/Producer since age 14, Nominated for 2 awards and winning 1 of them. Known for working with Gabry Ponte of Eiffel 65.

14. Iceland- Systur- Með hækkandi sól- Formed in 2011, a group of three sisters. Their father is a composer and keyboardist. Trans Rights activists! Title stranslates to ‘With the Rising Sun.’

15. Greece- Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord-Die Together 25 years old, currently resides in Norway. Studied medicine before putting her studies on hold to pursue music. Recording Artist since 2014.

16. Norway- Subwoolfer- Give that Wolf a Banana- Keith, Jim and DJ Astronaut. Two wolves from the moon who are known as ‘the best artists in the galaxy’. The song has more than 7 million hits on Spotify.

17. Armenia- Rosa Lynn- Snap- 21 years old, a recording artist as of 2021 but made her TV debut in 2013 for Junior Eurovision’s National final. She has been playing Piano since the age of 6.

A Film A Year

Going through an old hard drive today I found this almost-completed list from 2015 in which I'd set myself the task of choosing a single film for each year of the preceding hundred. It was interesting to see in what ways my tastes had changed and just how many more films I'd discovered and fallen in love with in the meantime.

Task 2: Show Me What You Made Of Tw: Menção de suicídio, Menção de abuso de drogas N/A: Esse POV também explica porque ela não estava presente na hora da invasão do Jawie e nem do anúncio do reitor e o que aconteceria se o Jacob for salvo (Sim, é possível salvar o Jacob).

Fazia muito tempo que não pisava em Heavenly Ponds. Ela descobriu aquele lugar eventualmente, mas quando ouviu alguns dos garotos da rua comentando sobre um lago onde se dava pra ver estrelas bem perto do chão, ainda chamavam de Poço dos Vagalumes. Não sabia direito como havia parado ali, já que quando saiu da casa dos Parton por mais que seu cérebro dissesse para voltar ao dormitório na UCLA, de alguma forma suas pernas a levaram para outro lugar e não ajudava que a residência em questão era no mesmo bairro onde havia morado um dia. A conversa que tivera mais cedo com Jawie com certeza acabou levando-a para um lugar que há muito tempo não pensava, tanto figurativamente quanto literalmente.

Sentada ali na grama, com o vento batendo e o cheiro de orvalho da manhã subindo enquanto sentia a sobriedade voltando, era impossível não sentir o pouco do vazio que se esforçava pra esconder todos dias da melhor forma possível, lá estava ele, dando um tchauzinho como um passageiro escondido no fundo do ônibus para dar um calote na passagem. Riley vinha ali em todas as vezes em que se sentia assim e a festa de Cora a fez pensar nele pela primeira vez desde que voltara a 2013.

Era um ritual próprio entre eles dois e que ela sabia que, se fosse o contrário, ele também faria o mesmo. Os dedos brincavam com as cordas do violão que pegara no quarto do irmão de Cora. Estava desafinado, indicando que fazia muito tempo desde que fora usado, Riley podia se lembrar de como Samuel, seu tio por parte do pai, tentou ensiná-la a tocar o instrumento, mas nunca tivera muito afinidade com ele como tinha com o piano.

Ainda sim, tio Sammy conseguiu lhe ensinar alguns acordes no dia em que pediu para ele a levar no Poço dos Vagalumes a primeira vez. Foram semanas até vencê-lo pelo cansaço e o homem concordar em levá-la, mesmo com uma asma infernal que o fazia parar um ou duas vezes durante a extensa caminhada para usar a bombinha de Aerolin. A pequena estava animada e orgulhosa de sua primeira aventura, não que seus pais fossem impedi-la de fazer algo assim, algumas vezes até acreditava que eles poderiam incentivá-la a simplesmente desaparecer em algum lugar e nunca mais voltar. Parte dela, algumas vezes também queria sumir e nunca mais botar o olho naquele casal que parecia qualquer outra coisa, menos pais de verdade. A única coisa que evitava de algo assim acontecer era o Tio Sammy, que a contra gosto de sua mãe, morava na casa da piscina da grande residência em Hollywood Hills (Que Riley odiava, diga-se de passagem. Ainda sentia falta da casa no subúrbio em Pasadena) e que a esperava todos os dias depois da escola com uma pilha de panquecas e ficavam assistindo desenhos até tarde da noite ou que a levava para futebol ou para o arcade, onde ele a ensinou a trapacear para conseguir mais fichas nas máquinas de brinde. Sammy era seu melhor amigo, e algumas vezes até desejava que ele fosse seu pai de verdade, porque ele fazia com ela coisas que os pais das outras crianças faziam também.

À sombra de algumas árvores, uma grama baixinha e o vento sussurrando com um céu tingido de amarelo, azul e algumas gotas do preto da noite se aproximando enquanto Sammy montava uma barraca para que eles acampassem ali. A água do lago sereno repousa, refletindo o céu começando a ser tomado por pontos brancos como um espelho líquido. As águas tranquilas acolhem os últimos raios do sol, criando um jogo de luz e sombra dançante.O murmúrio suave da água se mistura com o canto dos pássaros, e o balançar das cordas do violão com os acordes de uma melodia que Sammy tocava enquanto o fogo crepitava, criando uma sinfonia natural que acalma os sentidos. Ela lembrava ainda de como seu tio ficava feliz quando eles iam até o Poço dos Vagalumes, e de como aquele havia virado um lugar de fuga para os dois, era como se a expressão triste taciturna que estava sempre no rosto dele quando ele achava que ninguém estava olhando não existia. Parecia que sempre havia algo o corroendo por dentro, algo que ele não podia explicar o que era, mas que estava sempre ali para assombrá-lo, e que quando perguntava para ele o que era, ele apenas respondia "quando você for mais velha eu te conto, raincloud" com um sorriso meio triste e encontrando uma forma de mudar de assunto. Hoje Riley entendia bem o que era aquilo sem que Samuel tivesse lhe explicado, algumas vezes sentia até o mesmo semblante formando na própria cara.

Dando alguns passos até a margem do lago, se ajoelhou, fitando a água limpa por um instante. O reflexo era diferente, mas expressão era mesma. Algumas coisas nunca mudam, pensou, erguendo os olhos e vendo aquela árvore bifurcada maldita. Apertava o braço do violão com força, as pegadas marcadas na grama, em linha reta para a coisa que mais odiava naquele lugar maldito. "Sua... filha... da... puta... desgraçada... maldita..." repetia enquanto batia o violão com toda força contra o troco grosso e forte na esperança de que apagasse o maior erro de sua vida de ter trazido seu tio naquele lugar. Podia se lembrar com riqueza de detalhes dos carros de polícia, das sirenes ainda rodando no teto, a fita amarela isolando a área quando chegou ali naquela manhã de 2009, depois de ver Samuel não havia dormido em casa depois de passar o dia inteiro fora e sabia exatamente aonde ele tinha ido. Sentira raiva todo o caminho, oras ele poderia ter esperado para levá-la com ele, mas a raiva virou confusão e depois uma tristeza profunda. "Se tivesse sido em outro lugar, talvez ele tivesse tido uma chance." Ouvi um policial dizer antes do mesmo notar sua presença. Ele ainda tentou esconder o corpo balançando, mas acabou sendo em vão, o estrago já havia sido feito. A única coisa que ele deixou foi uma carta, que até hoje Riley nunca teve coragem de ler.

Todas as vezes que pensava nele, todas essas questões vinham a tona, talvez se nunca tivesse o trazido ali ele teria alguma chance de sobreviver, talvez se nunca tivessem pisado ali ele teria sido encontrado com mais facilidade, ao invés de dias depois, pendurado nessa árvore maldita, talvez se tivesse aprendido a usar essa merda de violão do jeito correto ele tivesse desistido, talvez se não tivesse contado pro seu pai sobre o saquinho estranho cheio de remédio escondido dentro do violão na casa da piscina teria evitado que ele fosse para ali mais uma vez... Talvez... Se.... palavras que a assombram até hoje. Esse maldito condicional voltando eternamente para assombra-la

Jogando o resto do violão nos pés da árvore, decidiu que era hora de enfrentar o que estava evitando desde que aparecera sem calça no John Wooden Center e em 2013. Ainda estava usando o roupão que pegara no closet do sr. Parton, mas a casa de seus pais era a uma quadra dali. A caminhada não era muito longa, mas não estava com pressa em fazê-la, pensava em como explicar aquilo tudo, mas lá no fundo sabendo que teria que enfrentar mais uma vez a decepção na cara da mãe e provavelmente mais um AVC no pai, igual a vez em que o reitor mostrou o vídeo dela fumando um baseado no banheiro e tocando fogo numa lata de lixo sem querer.

Identificar a própria casa sempre fora fácil, era a única com um monte de cacti e areia no lugar de grama, como nas outras casas em volta, mas o pior era saber que teria que fazer a caminhada da vergonha mais uma vez, mas seria a primeira vez que a faria sem o apoio moral de Sammy, ainda mais que o Lexus da mãe e o Cadillac Eldorado do pai estavam parados na garagem.Abriu a porta corrediça do fundo com todo cuidado, sabendo que sempre ficava aberta aquela hora para que os cachorros saíssem para fazerem as necessidades. Caminhou o mais silencioso possível até onde deveria ser seu quarto, se esgueirando longe dos raios de sol que escapavam pela fresta do blackout da janela.

"Você deveria estar na faculdade. "

Riley parou na mesma hora em que pegava uma camiseta franzindo o cenho. Ela conhecia aquela voz, mas devia ser efeito do peiote. É a única explicação para ouvir a voz de uma pessoa que já morreu. Quando a cortina de arreganhou, fazendo a luz do sol entrar com toda força tal qual um canhão de luz da polícia e direto em sua cara, foi que teve certeza que não era alucinações do peiote ou de qualquer uma das drogas que usara na noite anterior.

"Não estou pagando uma faculdade cara dessas pra você ficar dormindo aqui em casa, Raincloud." Samuel havia aberto a cortina e estava com uma expressão severa de quem está se preparando para uma bronca. "O que diabos é isso que está vestindo?"

"Um roupão?" Respondeu. Seu cérebro estava tentando encontrar formas para aquilo ser possível. Quer dizer Sammy havia morrido em 2009, muito antes de 14 de setembro de 2013 como isso era possível? Como alguém conseguiu impedir isso? Tudo que havia aprendido até aqui mostrava que era impossível, para ele estar vivo alguém teria que ter morrido no lugar. Será que foi sua mãe? Ou um dos irmão? Seus neurônios não conseguiam pensar direito. Ela não sabia se abraçava o tio ou se fazia perguntas, mas antes que pudesse se decidir, já estava caída no chão chorando aos pés de Samuel, soltando as lágrimas que deveria ter soltado durante todos esses anos. "Me desculpa, cara. Me desculpa de verdade. Se eu soubesse que você ia fazer aquilo eu nunca tinha te dedado pro meu pai e nem te lavado lá no poço. Me desculpa de verdade. Eu prometo que nunca mais uso nada se você prometer que não vai repetir aquilo"

"Cara, você andou usando aqueles negócios de novo? Quantas vezes sua mãe já não falou que não quer ver você com esses trecos?" Sentiu o homem a levantar e se sentar na cama ao seu lado, com a ruga da testa profundo, e marcas do tempo que não existiam em 2009. "Olha, eu entendo, já tive a sua idade e sei que um baseado e uma bala é bom de vez em quando, mas a morte do seu tio Richard me fez ver que isso não tem futuro e não quero que você seja um Zé droguinha. Você é inteligente demais pra isso." Sammy abraça Riley sem nem fazer ideia de o que acabou de falar fez na cabeça da sobrinha (ou filho? Nem ela entendeu isso direito. O que importava era que ele estava de volta). Mais uma vez a física teórica se mostrando mais prática do que teórica, pensou, enquanto tentava digerir o que acabara de ouvir. "Vamos fazer o seguinte, Você toma um banho, tira esse cheiro de desinfetante barato, troca de roupa e espera aqui. Vou inventar alguma desculpa para sua mãe e te deixo na faculdade. Ela não precisa saber disso e a gente toma café no Randy's, ok."

Apenas assentiu com a cabeça, aproveitando o calor daqueles braços que tanto sentira falta ao longo de todos esses anos. Era algo que guardava na memória e que achava que nunca teria a chance de sentir novamente. Talvez fosse por isso que a escolheram para voltar, essa era tal da segunda chance que falava no sms.
