Medieval Burial With Decorated Longsword Found in Sweden

People crisscrossed a town square in Sweden. Cars drove through. Birds flew over, occasionally stopping to peck for food.

Underneath the hubbub of modern life, a medieval secret went unnoticed — not anymore.

Archaeological excavations of the Lilla Torg square in Halmstad found 49 graves from the medieval period, according to a Dec. 19 blog post from the Cultural Environment of Halland. The burials originally rested under a convent that functioned from 1494 to 1531.

One grave stood out from the others: the grave of a very tall, elite man.

Archaeologists uncovered the skeleton of a 6-foot-2 man with a longsword resting on his left side, officials said. The sword was well-preserved and measured over 4 feet in length.

An x-ray image of the sword showed an inlaid decoration of two crosses, archaeologists said. The crosses were likely made of precious metal. A photo shared by the Cultural Environment of Halland on Facebook shows this x-ray.

The remnants of the at least 500-year-old weapon measure about 4-feet-3, but the total length of the sword is unknown, the blog post said.

Swords are rarely found in medieval graves, the Cultural Environment of Halland said in a Facebook post. The presence of a sword indicates that the deceased was an elite or high-class person.

Archaeologists removed the sword, wrapped it up and sent it to a lab for preservation and further study. Excavations at the square are ongoing.

Halmstad is about 270 miles southwest from Stockholm.

🍔 Review № 550 ━ 📍 Hotbox Burgers ★★★★☆ • Hotbox Burgers opened in Halmstad late in the spring of 2022, and have already started their expansion plans. Their menu consists of two regular burgers, a monthly creation and a halloumi burger. We have visited them twice and tried two different varieties; a The Cheese with a 120-gram beef patty from a local farm, two slices of organic burger cheddar, pickles, red onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo and something as surprising as roasted corn, plus a The Hotbox with the same amount of meat, cheddar, bacon, red onions, chili sauce and corn. Both burgers cost 120 SEK (12 USD), including an order of french fries and a soft drink during lunch hours. • Despite being first in line it took a while to get our burgers, but when they arrived they looked really good (but not as good as they did on their socials) The locally baked bun was invitingly warm and fluffy, and our first bite was amazing and made us hungry for more. The beef was tasty, juicy and with a deep crust, and the cheddar made everything nice and creamy – especially in out The Cheese. The bun tasted as good as it looked, but we didn’t really notice the corn in any of our burgers, and we felt a bit confused as to why they’d even added this ingredient to their menu at all. We enjoyed the well-balanced heat and flavour composition in our The Hotbox, but the bacon was quite soft and ought to have been much crispier. • Hotbox Burgers are off to a good start, and it’s obvious that they’re using really high-quality ingredients.
