As @onenicebugperday is not currently accepting submissions, I’m sharing this little friend here.

I found a stink bug (aka shield bug) in my house today. It’s too cold to let them go outside. 17°F.

I offered them some water, tomato slice, and some shredded celery. They really like apples, so tomorrow I’ll go buy them one.

In the meantime, here they are getting a drink from water I put on the counter.

This tyke is Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha Halys). They are a non-native invasive species from Asia.

I dislike invasives, but “stinky bugs” are one of my favorite bugs. Ecology vs Emotions… so, now we have a small housemate for the cold snap.

All “stinky bugs”, regardless of species, are called “Jerry/Jeri” or “Jerry/Jeri Bugs” in our family lexicon. On a similar vein, each spider is a “Fred.”

The Canadian Council on Invasive Species (CCIS) gave a short presentation of the top 10 invasive species already in Canada or that could come to Canada from south of our border and that we therefore should be on the alert for. 

The top 10 invasive species were as follows:

Asian long-horned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis

Spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula

Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia

Emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis

Hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae

Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys

Dutch elm disease, Ophiostoma ulmi and Ophiostoma novo-ulmi

Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica

Spongy moth (also LDD moth; previously gypsy moth), Lymantria dispar dispar

Lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii

I have definitely seen at least three of these species and/or the damage they have done, specifically 4, 8, and 9.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys)

Distribution: Native to east Asia; China, Japan and Korea; introduced to Europe, Eurasia, South America and North America.

Habitat: Often associated with human habitats, found in or near homes and vehicles; also found in agricultural fields, gardens and orchards.

Diet: Generalist herbivore; feeds on the juices of plants, with a preference for fruit, but will also feed from leaves and tree trunks; preference for fruiting plants.

Description: These crop pests were introduced to the USA sometime in the 90s, first detected in Pennsylvania. It was likely introduced to Europe in 1998, and later made its way to South America and Eurasia. This species is responsible for damages on many types of crops, costing thousands of dollars in damages to apple and stone fruit crop in the USA, as well as extensive damage to hazelnut crops in Turkey and Georgia. The brown marmorated stink bug may also enter homes when the weather gets cold, sometimes into the thousands per household.

Like many other stink bug species, the brown marmorated stink bug has the capacity to produce a foul odor when it's disturbed, often compared to that of cilantro. This smell is used as a defence mechanism against vertebrate predators like birds and lizards. While it's rarely harmful to humans, the stink bug's fluid is an irritant that may cause inflammation on the skin or in the eyes.

Az ázsiai márványospoloska (Halyomorpha halys) a rovarok (Insecta) osztályának félfedelesszárnyúak (Hemiptera) rendjébe, ezen belül a címeres poloskák (Pentatomidae) családjába tartozó inváziós rovar.

szóval itten a zátonyon eléggé benn van a zabszem a seggben, hogy milyen inváziós rohadék borítja fel a mezőgazdaság melyik részét, abuzálja meg az ökoszisztémát (hello varroa atka, hello gyümölcsbaszó akármilégy, ponty, különböző darazsak, stb.) amin nem segít, hogy rohadt sokmindent importálunk és a rohadtsokminden egy jelentős része ázsiából jön, ahonnan ez a rühedelem is származ eredetileg. (bár egyébként ma már valószínűbb, hogy az usából fog bejönni, ha bejön) Mivel a Fontos Ágazatok Minisztériuma (MPI), léeánykori nevén a biosecurity folyton tesztel mindenfélét meg fumigálja a nemtommit, már talált ilyen poloskát (becsületes nevén Brown Marmorated Stink Bug) hajókon, ezeket nem is engedte kikötni amíg nem fumigálták őket vagy mi.

Ez a poloska a kilencvenes évek vége óta terjed az USÁ-ban, Európában és már UK-ben is ott van, mindenféle terményt megeszik és amit meghagy azt megpocsékolja, (helló ámerikai kukorica meg szójaföldek), a rovarirtószerek egy része hatástalan neki mert a szívókájával eszeget, a másik részére meg kezd rezisztens lenni. De legalább télire beköltözik a házakba áttelelni, igazi kis rohadék. Ámerika reménytelen küzdelmet folytat ellene és nem áll nyerésre.

Néhány évvel ezelőtt amikor az MPI rendszeresen fogott illegális migrács poloskát, csinált egy kampányt, hogy hogy kell felismerni, mit kell csinálni meg hogy lehet megkülönböztetni a helyben már meglevő, amúgy nem káros vagy egyenesen hasznos poloskáktól.

Vasárnap találtam egy poloskát a carportban, emlékeztem erre a kampányra, és mivel nem vagyok egy entomológ, fogságba ejtettem egy kisméretű duralex pohárral. Aztán elolvastam a minisztériom leírását, de nem tudtam eldönteni, hogy ez mi a frász, úgyhogy a munkaszüneti napra (ANZAC day) való tekintet nélkül felhíttam a fenti számot, hogy mi van. Egy nagyon kedves néni vette fel a telefont, elkérte a nevem meg a címem meg megkért, hogy fotózzam le a jószágot és küldjem el a fotót egy mail címre, ott majd a bogarász szakemberek megnézik és szólnak mi van. Ezek után tegyem a jószágot a fagyasztóba hátha kell később, ott majd elpusztul és ha kell megvan épségben.

Igy is tettem, miután a fotózáshoz átlakoltattuk a dögöt egy ziploc zacsiba, lefotóztam, elküdtem, a bogár meg a fagyóban van.

Ma jött egy levél, bizonyos Ben azt írta, hogy köszönik a vigilanciát, de Brown Soldier Bug-ot találtam (Cermatulus nasalis) ami megeszi a gonosz hernyókat, úgyhogy igazából inkább hasznos mint káros. És, hogy azzal a legkönnyebb összetéveszteni, úgyhogy no worries.
