KENPACHIRO SATSUMA R.I.P.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was extremely saddened to learn that suit actor Kenpachiro Satsuma passed away yesterday, December 16, from a bout of pneumonia.
Satsuma-san was apprentice and friend to original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima. Satsuma-san's first suit role was as the Smog Monster, Hedorah, battling his sensei as Godzilla, in Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971).
Satsuma-san went on to play the space kaiju Gigan in the next two films in the series, Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) and Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973).
Nakajima-san retired from the role of Godzilla in 1972. When the Godzilla series was revived in 1984 with The Return of Godzilla (aka Godzilla 1985) the role went to his former apprentice, Satsuma-san.
Satsuma-san played Godzilla throughout the entire Heisei series, ending with Godzilla vs. Destroyah (1995), when Toho retired the Big G a second time.
Satsuma-san brought an animalistic fierceness to Godzilla that made the king of the monsters truly terrifying and unpredictable. Gone was the super heroic, somewhat goofy Godzilla of the 1970s, and returned was the menace of the original Godzilla/Gojira (1954).
I had the honor to meet Satsuma-san, and other Toho luminaries, in 2015 during G-Tour 3. He was very polite, gracious and humble, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. He was a delight to speak with, and I will always remember that visit as one of the highlights of the tour.

I keep hearing about this analog horror thing called The Man in the Suit, but I think I've absorbed too much Godzilla production history to ever enjoy it. Haruo Nakajima's plenty interesting without trying to make him into Springtrap. He fought in the Pacific War when he was 14. He attended Admiral Yamamoto's funeral. He decided to become an actor on a whim after he was arrested for speeding and lost his job as a truck driver. Godzilla's director hired him for the titular role because he volunteered to be set on fire the last time they worked together. He invented a style of acting that became synonymous with Japanese special effects. He had a bit part in Seven Samurai the same year. He mentored the original Ultraman actor because some of the villains were made from kaiju costumes he had originally worn. He had a one-sided rivalry with another Godzilla actor in the 90s. He spend his final years as a regular on the U.S. convention circuit, during which he met the original King Kong armature and was, on a few occasions, in the same room as me.

"Haruo Nakajima is perhaps Japan’s most famous actor, but you wouldn’t necessarily recognize his face. That’s because from 1954 to 1972, he was the man inside the Godzilla costume for 12 consecutive films At 87 years old, many now consider Nakajima among the most iconic suit actors in film history. We caught up with the legend who gave life to the "King of the Monsters" to find out how he took on the challenge in the original groundbreaking movie" From Youtube channel Great Big Story: The Man Who Was Godzilla RIP Mr Nakajima...

Do you have any thoughts/opinions or feelings about the analogue series "the man in the suit"? I know Godzilla is one of your major fixations so I got curious
I refuse to watch it. The Godzilla franchise means a lot to me, and the people who have played Godzilla were a huge part of that.
The original Godzilla actor was a man named Haruo Nakajima, and he was amazing! He was a pioneer of suitimation and monster choreography. He is one of my heroes.
The analogue horror series ”The Man in the Suit” is about Haruo Nakajima going insane in the suit, becoming disfigured, and, and hurting people. This is something that never happened. Nothing like this ever happened. He was a real person and it is gross to make up and tell a story like this about him.
I have no interest in watching a fictional story about one of my heroes going insane and hurting people.
