Ne znam za ostale ljude, ali mene uvijek odmah privuku prekrasne korice prekrivene cvijećem. Ovaj puta, osim što služe kao dekoracija, daju uvid u samu radnju ove knjige koja se temelju na jeziku cvijeća.

Djelo prati problematiku generacijske traume i potrebe da se od nje odmakne. Žene unutar obitelji Hart kao da su proklete iskustvima sa nasilnim muškarcima te ona starija uvijek pokuša neuspješno zaštititi mlađu od slične traume. Pružanje sigurnog utočišta te mirno okruženje trebalo bi dovesti do pozitivnog pomaka i do zacjeljivanja rana, no jedna drugoj postavljaju uvjete za liječenje emocionalnih trauma.

Alicina baka njoj nudi prostor, vrijeme i slobodu za rast i razvoj, no također postavlja stroga pravila ponašanja. Obje tvrdoglavo odbijaju popustiti dok jednog dana Alice ne odluči da sama želi iskusiti svijet oko sebe.

Alicin bijeg od obitelji je, na kraju krajeva, neizbježan jer ona teži mogućnosti da sama proživi svoj život i čini svoje odluke, makar one nisu uvijek ispravne. Sa slobodom dolaze i druge opasnosti, drugi problemi i druge brige, a tako i nova negativna iskustva. Na kraju Alice proživljava slične situacije kao i njezine prethodnice, sve zato što nisu uspjele slomiti uzorak ponašanja koji ih prati kroz generacije.

Ringland stavlja veliki naglasak na primjetan nedostatak verbalne komunikacije i probleme koji izviru upravo zbog njega. Da su žene na farmi cvijeća uistinu međusobno razgovarale bez prikrivenih predrasuda i optužbi, uspjele bi izbjeći veliki dio boli koja im je nanesena, ali i koju su u nanijele jedna drugoj, sve samo da iskuse iskonsku, bezuvjetnu ljubav.

No dok među likovima vlada manjak komunikacije, spisateljica uvijek vjerno predočuje svaki osjećaj, patnju i čežnju koristeći simbolizam cvijeća što ovu knjigu čini posebnom.
