I'm watching The Magnus Archives for the first time (i think im going to start tagging posts relevant to this with "tma liveblog" so I don't have to keep specifying). I just started season 2, and I've got to say I'm with Jon's paranoia on this one. Martin IS more competent than he's letting on. His soft, sweet, british voice is just so disarming that even hearing him talk about surviving the worm siege, I stilll mentally categorized him as "likely to die first". Sure he survived, but thats because Prentis let him go. If he actually got wormed, he'd probably just perish. Turns out, his initial idea for what would happen if he got wormed was performing emergency worm removal surgery on himself with a pocket knife. He sounded serious too, like he was mentally prepared to go through with it without hesitation if that's what it took. And if we look at what each of the characters did during the worm invasion,
Jon made no judgement calls that significantly impacted group survival one way or the other (+0) and got very wormed at the end (-1) for a grand total of -1 survival points.
Tim didn't notice that Prentis was in the archive and nearly got got (-1), sent Sasha ahead to get help, which resulted in the fire suppression system going off and saving himself and Jon from certain death (+2), got surrounded by worms in Jon's office (-1), and got very wormed at the end (-1), for a grand total of -1 survival points.
Sasha saved Tim from Prentis (+1), successfully got help, saving Tim and Jon from certain death (+2) and died (-1). For a total of 2 survival points.
Martin directed an injured Jon and Sasha to a safe place to hide from the worms and provided an effective tool for worm removal (+2), hid the stash of fire extinguishers that saved Tim from certain death (+1), and kept himself out of mortal peril for the entire duration of the invasion (+1). 4 survival points. He didn't even get injured. He's the only one who survived without intervention by forces beyond his control. Martin didn't play the part of first to die. No, this man was born for the roll of Final Girl.
And I don't think he's evil, and I don't think he killed Gertrude. But I do think that he's entirely capable of murder, if that's what it takes to survive. And I do think he will continue to exert his agency in the story in ways that the other characters and audience forget to expect from him. Not me, though. I learned my lesson. As entirely disarming as his demeanor is, I'm not going to underestimate him a second time.
I had this realization a few days ago when reviewing what we know about Gaster while theorizing about the mysterious Valentine from the newsletter and idk if other people have pointed this out yet, but I haven't seen anyone else talk about it:
I don't think Gaster's disappearance has anything to do with Core.
The Core is only mentioned in relation to Gaster once, in this dialogue from one of the Gaster followers:
This dialogue is why most theories and fanon built around the idea that Gaster fell into the Core, which for reasons unknown to us erased him from existence. But I'm now pretty convinced that this is a red herring, because it doesn't actually say Gaster fell into the Core. It says he made the Core, and that he fell into his creation.
It does not say that this creation is the Core.
The dialogue is written in a way that leads you to assume the creation he fell into was the Core, but that doesn't really make much sense considering the rest of the dialogue.
The dialogue says "they say he created the Core," which implies this is second hand knowledge, but then says with certainty "One day, he fell into his creation." Why do they know for sure he fell into "his creation," but only knows he created the core from what others say?
If you talk to the follower again, they say "Will Alphys end up the same way?" Why would Alphys also fall into the Core? As far as we know, Alphys doesn't maintain the Core; if I remember correctly, a few monsters at Mettaton's hotel are stated to work in the Core, so wouldn't this follower be more concerned that those monsters will end up like Gaster and not Alphys?
And another question that I think fanon has just ignored due to the assumption it was something we don't yet know about, but I am now wondering about: Why would falling into the Core erase Gaster from time? When traveling through Hotland and viewing the Core in the distance, Alphys says this:
And while this dialogue may at first seem indicative that the Core is more mysterious than a normal geothermal power generator (and it is in some ways), remember: Alphys didn't build the Core. Alphys doesn't understand how the Core works, not because it has some unnatural property that could erase people from space time, but because she didn't build it. Not only does this mean that the Core is likely just a power generator that utilizes the lava in Hotland to produce geothermal energy and convert it to electricity, it also means that Alphys doesn't work on the Core, because she doesn't know how it works. So why would the Gaster follower worry about Alphys ending up like Gaster if she doesn't have any involvement with the Core?
Additionally, that Gaster follower is the only one to mention the Core in relation to Gaster. In fact, one of the other followers says something that could be interpreted as actively contradicting his erasure being caused by the Core:
This follower says "his experiments went wrong," and doesn't mention the Core. Why would Gaster be experimenting with the Core? And if he was, we don't know anything about it.
But you know what experiments we do know Gaster was working on, because it's literally one of the only pieces of dialogue we have from him?
And do you know what other creation was presumably made by Gaster, as Alphys is unfamiliar with it's operation? That is also a creation that was actively being used in experiments, which Alphys is continuing to perform herself? Experiments that are directly involved with something we already know can alter time and space? A creation that is located in one of the most mysterious areas in the game with several oddities in it that are straight up never explained, multiple fourth wall breaking moments, and a couple explicit references to things we believe are associated with Gaster? A creation that suspiciously resembles in appearance the form of a character who canonically can alter time and space, not to mention resembling the thing that's literally called a GASTER BLASTER???
god that was so sweet maybe I a bit biased because i adore the liyue cast but that was one of most interesting story quests I have done and I just did like 8 of them within the past few weeks
seeing ganyu, shenhe, xiao, ping, xingiqu and ofc the loml zhongli is sooo nice. i love when you get to meet other playable characters and this one was full of great character interactions
the best story quests manage to use npcs but also allow for the main character to display significant growth and strength
also cloud retainer has been one of my favorite characters since the game came out like i have loved her since 1.1 so every time she opens her mouth is a sense of joy
cloud retainer being lonely and meeting up with ganyu and shenhe was so sweet (and when her disciples praise her she is overjoyed how sweet)
and then she meets with ping and god i was surprised to see xiao
i love xiao dearly he is so sweet i love seeing him but it was also nice to know archon war details, especially about cloud retainers combat prowess
As for the npcs that was weepy but I dont think i have enough emotional attachment to 2 hour npcs to weep like its not impossible but it really depends
also the traveler's dream! that was so sweet and xianyun was so kind god i love cloud retainer. I think it was a very nice cinematic
cloud retainer!!! xianyun!!! she is proud but gentle and loving, she wont say she is lonely but you have to visit her and talk with her!! and she loves taking care of people and she loves her friends i love you my dear! and god she is funny like so funny.
ZHONGLI MY LOVE i knew he was coming i saw the leaks BUT MY LOVE kisses smooches holds and squeezes
the way zhongli and xianyun acted was comedic gold and then the whole team alongside shuyu going out to eat like that was so precious like really really precious
i think its funny how zhongli is like renowned in liyue for his knowledge on everything like people hold him in such high regard
the beauty of recognizing your friends and family no matter what form they take
I think its a little endearing that of all their friends hearing "xianyun" from zhongli's lips makes her a little flustered. Like she wants to zhongli to be the one person that calls her true name and that’s wonderful
EVERYBODY recognizes xianyun and they shower her with praises she is very loved!
But I think what really cemented this quest for me, was the post-quest dialogue, once you finish the story quest you get voicelines for characters and while I dont have shenhe i do have ganyu and zhongli and xianyun herself.
Anyway I think the beauty is once you complete the story quest in "Xianyun's Troubles" she states she is overwhelmed by how many new and old friends keep knocking on her door asking to hang out and that shes running out of Mora. Xianyun being lonely this whole time, and not understanding why all of her disciples and friends choose to live in the harbor, but the moment she enters the harbor she is overwhelmed with her friends. Like that is so beautiful and sweet.
(bonus: at cloud retainer's abode there is a table for rex lapis, guizhong and cloud retainer, usually the plates for cloud retainer and guizhong are still there but after the quest only guizhong's things remain-how bittersweet but oddly lovely)
I know I'm taking a swing at the hornet's nest with this one - but Astarion fans need to shut up, tbh. You're annoying little blorbo isn't that special, he's got the same shit going on as everyone else.
"b-b-but, he was abused by Cazador for 200 years and he was turned as a little baby :("
yeah? Shadowheart was kidnapped as a child and physically abused. Lae'zel was literally born into her abuse. Karlach and Gale are physically bound to their abusers. We literally watch Wyll be disfigured by his evil and extremely powerful master.
This is an ice-cold take, I know - but like, could we not condense the obnoxious simping to the most tropey character, please?
Sorry about the lack of updates. My teacher promised me her favourite dnd dice if I score an 80 or higher on the test and I am very determined right now.
I have such a desperate need to talk to someone about my fic ideas so I can work out the details. But it has to be someone into submas. I am not active enough in the fandom to be able to reach out to anyone, and it's not my friend's fandom (love them but it's a you both must be excited about it kind of thing).
The absolute frustration of being an adult with a draining job and little free energy at the end of the day. When I do get a little extra energy, there's no one around. Aaaaaaaaaughhhhh
I have no question, but I just want to say: you make great videos. While I've had to look other places for undertale dubs, I always find myself watching your old ones.
So thank you for making my days a little bit happier 🫶🏽
Awwww! Thanks for the hug! It has been (and will continue to be!) my pleasure to bring so much joy to so many people.
