I had been attending a new to me church. I was trying to date a women there this church was her idea. That relationship crashed and burned but that's a different story.

So I check everything the laptop works great and is exactly like how it was before the first hard drive died. Even the logins still worked. So I call pastor Bob and tell him his computer is done. He says that's great he will be here soon to get it.

About 45 minutes later pastor Bob walks in. I show him his laptop working and much faster. He loves it signs the pickup form. He then pays me with a check for $60. I look around it's slow and I'm all caught up on repair tickets. So I decided I'm going to clone pastor bobs data to a second laptop. I look around a bit. He had all of his logins stored in a folder on the desktop. Including his online dating logins. And online poker. Did I ever mention pastor Bob is married. I start printing his online dating messages. I look back and find pastor Bob had been adult hugging. several women from his online dating. he had been paying for his dates from the churches donation fund. I am getting angry now. Then I realize he had adult hugged the women I was dating when I was dating her.

It was then I decided to break pastor Bob. I printed out all his dating messages and the women he adult hugged. for the last 6 months except I refused to print the naughty pictures. There was also rumors of a criminal case for embezzlement. No one has seen Bob in a while now. The church might close if they can't find a new pastor. But the churches money is very low. a complete gif tutorial

hi! so i was requested by @popalice007 to make a tutorial on how to make gifs and i am very happy to oblige! this will cover pretty much everything, from capturing frames to saving the final product. this is just how i personally do it, and there are loads of other ways to gif, and i recommend looking at other gifmakers’ tutorials to get a more well rounded view on how to gif. please continue reading if you are interested, and please like/reblog if you find it useful!

disclaimer this is going to get really wordy as i try to explain where to find things and how to do them and my thought process behind why i do them, but please send me a message/ask if something needs clarified!

part 1: required materials and other tips

just another heads up, i have a pc, and while i believe most of this should be the same whether you have a mac or a pc, i could be very wrong as i’m not a computer expert and have never really used anything besides windows.

so the two programs i use are kmplayer and adobe photoshop cs5 portable. kmplayer can be downloaded for free here. i have the 32 bit version for windows, so that is what i’m going to be providing the instructions for, since the 64 bit version seems to be a little different. photoshop is pretty expensive, but thepiratebay has several torrents for it, and other downloads and torrents for it do exist. i downloaded mine quite awhile ago so i don’t remember exactly where and how i did it so it might require some researching. i would just double check the comments and instructions to make sure the download will work. there are also dedicated photoshop tumblrs that will probably have links to downloads.

if you are giffing a scene from a tv show, movie, video, etc, you also need to have the video saved somewhere on your computer/flashdrive/whatever. hd-source is a good source for tv shows, and there are tons of other sources. i download a lot from thepiratebay using a program called utorrent (i just use the free version) but beware because since you are downloading copyrighted materials it isnt legal, and while i have never had a problem, i have heard of people getting warning letters from their internet providers. you can also download youtube videos and videos from other places and there are lots of other ways to get videos that i won’t cover.

no matter where you get your video, you want it to be pretty high quality, since the higher quality the video is, the clearer and nicer the gif will turn out to be. most of the time you want 720p if you can get it. 1080p is nice and if you can get your hands on it without the video size being enormous you can certainly utilize it, but it isn’t a necessity and usually i don’t bother. anything lower than 480p can get to looking pretty grainy especially if you are doing full size 540 px gifs, but if you are giffing something from a convention panel video taken by a phone, for example, you don’t really have an option.

additionally, if you are giffing dialogue, find a script online somewhere or find subtitles. you can transcribe it yourself if you want, but if a character is mumbling or has an accent or something i like to be sure of what they are saying.

and finally, have some patience! a lot of the popular gifmakers have been doing this for years and have streamlined their process so it doesn’t take hours, but as a beginner it takes time to get everything right,so it is totally normal if you get to feeling frustrated.

part 2: capturing the frames

first you will want to have an idea of what scene you would like to gif. before i get started i create a new folder where i want the captured frames to go, and i name it something memorable so i can find it again later. kmplayer does also automatically create a folder called capture that you can use if you want. if you are doing a gifset like this, i would have 8 different folders and gave each of those gifs/scenes their own folders. 

however, the example i’m going to be using throughout this tutorial is going to be a dialogue scene, specifically this one here, just because they can get a little more complicated imo (plus i want to show how i use the text tool etc). if i’m giffing a scene where characters are talking, even if the scene is a long one with back and forth dialogue, i usually like to cap it all at once and put it in the same folder, and then i separate it out later in photoshop. you can also plan ahead and put all the different bits in different folders, thats up to you and your personal preference.

next i open up kmplayer. kmplayer likes to update pretty regularly and will let you know when you open it if it wants to update. it doesn’t usually hurt to ignore it if you are in a rush, but i usually let it do its thing and make sure i don’t also download whatever browser service, etc. it also wants to install. sometimes ads show up on the right side, you can close them by hitting the little arrow between the ads and the video screen

to open the video, click on “kmplayer” in the upper left hand corner and then click on “open files”. search for your video file and double click it to open it

kmplayer will then open the video, and if its 720p often i have to make the window smaller because it fill up the entire screen and i need to be able to see other windows besides the video. if i remember correctly when you first download kmplayer it isnt automatically set to keep the aspect ratio the same, so if you need to, hit the f2 key to open the preferences or click the lightning bolt on top next to kmplayer, and then click on preferences. under general and then screen on the sidebar, and then under general again i have my settings like so, and hopefully that resolves that issue if you have it. you might have to reopen the video again for that to kick in but i’m not positive. if it still doesn’t work try to google it. i’ve had the problem a couple times and the answer is out there but i’m no tech pro.

anyway, i then locate the beginning of the scene that i want to gif. you can click around on the bottom along the progress bar, as well as using alt+left or right to jump forward and back a minute, the left or right arrow key to jump 5 seconds, or the f key to go forward a single frame. every frame counts, and it is preferable to have too many frames and have to delete them later than to find out your gif will only be 10 frames long because you started capping in the middle of the scene, or because you stopped capping too early. i typically will watch the clip a few times so that i have a set idea of where i want to start and stop.

once you are paused at the beginning of the scene you want to gif, press ctrl+g to open kmplayer’s frame extraction window. click on the folder icon so that you can locate that empty folder you had made earlier. this is where kmplayer will save the screencaps. i then set my settings to png, continuously, original size, and every frame, like so

now we are ready to start capturing! click start on the frame extraction window, and then click back over to the video (this is why i make the video window smaller, so that i can see the video and the frame extraction window at the same time). once i’m back on the window, i hold down and/or tap the f key. kmplayer will capture the frames as you go along. the audio plays along with it albeit choppily which is why i watch the clip several times beforehand, because it can be hard to follow and is disorienting. you can also click the play and pause button, but, again, the audio tends to play at a different rate and it gets confusing, so for me frame by frame is the way to go. keep tapping f until you get to end of the scene/wherever you want to stop. i keep the folder where the caps go open usually so if i mess up or change my mind on where to start/end, i can delete the whole folder and create a new empty one to start over again. this process takes practice and is often dependent on what you are trying to gif and its not a big deal if you have to try it a couple times to get it right.

once you have reached the end of the scene, click back over to the frame extraction window and click stop. if you are giffing multiple scenes from the same video you can click the folder icon and select a different folder to save frames into and then repeat the process of finding the scene and capping it, or if you want to cap from a different video, you can open a new video and cap from there. then if you are satisfied and have all your caps, you are free to exit out of kmplayer. 

part 3: making the gif

now it is time to actually make the gif! go ahead and open photoshop, and if it is your first time you can play around and familiarize yourself with where things are. basic gifs don’t require a lot of the tools that photoshop has, and you can customize some as to what windows and panels are open. below is what my workspace typically looks like so that i can get to certain things quicker, but i will explain as i go along where the controls normally are found in the toolbar. also, if you hover over a control photoshop will tell you what it is and what it does.

to open the frames, go to file, then scripts, then load multiple dicom files. then find your folder of caps, select it, and then click OK to open

be aware that depending on the number of frames in that file and the size of the images it sometimes can take awhile to fully load. once they are loaded, you should be able to see all those screencaps as layers on the right hand side of the screen. if not, go to the top where it says windows and click on layers. i frequently accidentally cap a couple extra frames where the scene shifts and i go ahead and delete those layers by highlighting them (use the shift or ctrl key to highlight several at a time) and then clicking on the trashcan at the bottom of the layers sidepanel.

next we are going to turn these layers into gif frames! i have combined this step into an action that i use to automatically do this for me to save time since i gif on a semi regular basis, but the steps are as follows.

first, make sure the animation bar is open. if it is not then go up to window and click animation, and then it should open at the bottom of the screen. you also have to be in frame animation mode. on the upper right hand corner of that panel is an icon with four lines and and an arrow. click on that and then click on  convert to frame animation. then in the same menu click make frames from layers.

this can also sometimes take some time if there are a lot of caps but when its done loading there will be frames in the animation bar. in the animation menu click select all frames. then, underneath any of the frames, there will be an arrow beside where it says 0 sec. click it and change the frame delay. what you set it to can be up to personal preference. i typically set mine to 0.07 or 0.08 which seems a bit slow, but i find when i convert the gif to a smart object (we’ll get to that) that seems to speed it up a little so i’ve just stuck with it. feel free to change the delay if you find later that that is too slow for your taste. also in lower left corner of the animation bar is where you set how many times the gif loops. change it from once to forever. the controls to play the gif are also below the frames.

since i gif a scene like this all in one big long take, it is now time to separate it into separate gifs if need be. if you are making a gifset like this you can skip this part because you most likely capped frames from different scenes and gave them their own folders, so they shouldnt need separating. 

sometimes you have to get creative on how you split apart the scene, and there arent really any hard and fast rules. here are some things i like to keep in mind:

the camera angles - this is the most important for me. if the camera goes from showing one character to another, or from one angle to another, i separate those into separate gifs pretty much no matter what.

the length of the gifs - this is dependent on the size you are going to crop to, how much movement the scene has, how much color, etc.,  but i typically try not to go over 80-100 frames in a 265px width gif. they can be trimmed down later, but if it takes 200 frames for the camera to switch to the other character, don’t make that one gif

the dialogue - if there is a natural break in the dialogue, that is a good place to end a gif. you don’t need 50 frames of no one speaking if you are doing a gifset with dialogue.

how many gifs you are making/size - at some point you have to decide how wide your gifs will be and how many of them. if your gifs will be 268 px wide (2 columns of gifs) then you have to have an even number of gifs, and you will need to separate to account for that

going along with the first tip, i’m going to separate the frames by camera changes. i do this first so that way when i crop the gifs, i get things centered how i like. 

you can see here by looking at the thumbnails of the layers what i mean by the camera changing angles.

first, press ctrl+n to open a new blank image. if the preset doesn’t say dicom files, click on that menu and click dicom files, that way the new image will be the same size as the original. hit ok.

next, highlight the layers in the original that are going to be the new gif. hold shift while clicking the first and last layer that you want to be in the new gif to do that.  click on them, hold, and drag them over to the new document. they will probably be off center and/or invisible. if the layers are invisible click an empty box next to one of the layers so that an eye appears and the layer shows up. then click the move tool and move the layers around til the fill the document correctly. be sure not to stretch/transform the layers by dragging on the edges and corners. as long as all the layers are still highlighted they should all move at once.

next, scroll to the bottom of the layers and delete the blank layer. then repeat the steps to make frames and set the time delay and there is your new gif!

the layers for that new gif are still in the original document, so go ahead and hit the trashcan to delete them, as well as the now blank frames. continue opening new documents and splitting up the scene until you have a new gif for every camera change. the last gif i leave in the original document. i ended up with 5 camera changes so 6 gifs to start with

at this point i crop each gif. tumblr has a guide for image sizes, and the width is the most important thing to follow there. the height is really up to you. if i’m only doing two or four gifs i tend to make them taller than if i do 8 or 10 gifs just because it looks better to me. i’m going to probably end up with 8 gifs because a couple bits are a little long, so i’m going to go with 268 px as the width and 175px as the height. again, the 268 part is the important part to get right since i’m doing two gifs across. to crop, find the crop tool on the left and set your dimensions at the top. make sure when you enter your dimensions, it is in pixels/px and not inches or centimeters.

click, hold, and drag to stretch to create a shadow for what you cropping. i usually go as big as the edges of the image will allow, and then bring the corners in a tad, since occasionally i get a video that has a black outline and i don’t like to have that in the gif. either hit enter or the checkmark in the upper right corner of the toolbar to crop.

you might have to zoom at this point and resize your window. in the bottom left corner there is a percentage you can change, and now that the gif is cropped it will be small enough that you can set it to 100% if it isn’t that already. continue to crop the remaining gifs to the same size. after this i usually play through each one to make sure i have everything in the frame and roughly centered. if you need to undo, press ctrl+z or ctrl+alt+z and recrop or redo whatever needs redone. there is also a history you can pull up under windows, and you can use that to backtrack multiple steps.

next i figure out if i need to break up any of the gifs because of their length. with a gif this size i can probably get away with having more frames and i can trim them later, but if a gif has more than 100 frames i look and see if i can either trim it down now because there is a lot of frames without talking or movement, or if there is a natural break in dialogue where i can split it into two gifs. there are also times when the gifs are really short that you can sometimes combine with a gif before or after that one. that’s your perogative ultimately and what you think looks good but will fall under the 3mb limit, and takes practice and experience to get an idea if a gif is going to be too large. sometimes i go back and rewatch the scene to figure out where to split things up. i also keep in mind that i want 8 gifs for this scene and right now i have 6, so i need to create 2 more, whether i separate two gifs in half, or separate one gif into three new ones.

ultimately i decided to split my largest gif of 180 frames into 3 gifs because it has quite a bit of dialogue, and the other gifs are either already under 80 frames or can easily have some frames deleted out of it. between using the script, rewatching the scene a few more times, and trying to lipread what the doctor was saying, i decided to separate between frames 65/66 and 120/121 so that way they were roughly the same number of frames. the process to separate them is the same as it was when we had the big original gif. i selected the last frame i wanted to include in the new gif so that way the eye appears next to the corresponding layer in the layer panel, and this is how i know which layers to drag to the new document. for example, in the picture i’m moving frames 1-65 to the new document, so i select frame 65, then find that layer and select all the layers below and including that layer and drag them. then repeat the steps to make the frames, etc.

go ahead and delete the empty frames, as well as any frames on the other gifs you may want to delete to trim them up.

so now we should have all of our gifs laid out! my next step is to sharpen them, and i do this using smart objects, and the steps are as follows. (i also made this into an action.)

first, select all the frames and all the layers in the gif. if you deleted some frames but didn’t delete the corresponding layers, don’t worry about it, it doesn’t matter and doesn’t affect the final product.

next, click on convert to timeline animation. this is in the animation menu where we earlier found convert to frame animation.

then, at the top go to filter and click on convert for smart filters. this creates a smart object and turns all of the frames and layers into just a single layer/object. this allows us to sharpen the whole gif at once instead of having to sharpen each frame one at a time (trust me that takes forever if you don’t have an action or do it this way).

next under filter again, then under sharpen, click on smart sharpen. this brings up a window with a bunch of settings. these are what mine are:

repeat this for every gif. look how much better they look already!

at this point, if you haven’t saved yet, do it now! this is a good time to save and take a break. go to file and then save. the format should be set as photoshop/.psd. i go ahead and rename the files too, for example, dwshades1 and so on. i number them too so i can get the order right when i upload them. with it saved as a psd, you could close out and reopen it later and the layers will all be there.

next is coloring! this is technically optional, but is usually the most fun part of giffing in my opinion, and i tend to find uncolored gifs rather boring and bland. this is where you can do some brightening, color correcting, make gifs black and white, and more! its time to get creative with those adjustments.

as there are so many ways to color things, and whole tutorials dedicated just to coloring, i’m only going to show the basics of where to find the adjustments and some of the different adjustment layers that i use most. my first step always though is to create a group just for the coloring layers. the button to create a group is at the bottom of the layer panel and looks like a folder. the button to the left of that is the one that contains the different adjustments you can make.

the black and white circle contains a list of different adjustments you can make. the two i like to use most are curves and vibrance. curves is really useful to brighten gifs and vibrance obviously adds vibrance. my advice is to just play around with all the settings, and look at coloring tutorials. a lot of gifmakers also have psds that you can download. you can either use them as is to apply to your gifs and credit the maker, or just study what they did and learn from it.

anyway, i went ahead and colored my gifs. here is a before and after look, as well as a list of adjustment layers i added:

in this case the before gif doesn’t look bad, but that isn’t always the case, sometimes they start out super dark and colorless. and i like the tone and colors of the colored gif better (you can see how much i like purples and blues lol). again, all personal preference.

whether you color or not, if you have dialogue in your gifs, the next step is adding it in! if the gif doesn’t have a dialogue or if you don’t want to add text, you can skip this next bit.

first, select the text tool on the left side toolbar, it looks like a T. next i choose my font, font size, and color at the top. here are my settings, the key thing is to make it easy to read.

there are more settings like bold and italics under window and then character. these are my settings.

after these are set, click in roughly the middle of the gif and start typing the text that goes with that gif. i usually start with white for the first person to speak, and then change to yellow for the second person and so on, so that way its clear who is speaking, but that’s up to you. when the text starts to go off the edge of the gif, i hit enter to start the next line until i’m out of text. otherwise photoshop will allow you to type right off the edge of the gif.

a little hard to read, right? that’s why i add stroke, which outlines the text. to do this, make sure the text layer is highlighted, and then click the fx button at the bottom of the layer panel, and then click stroke.

these are the settings i use. usually i only have to change the size from 3 to 1px. hit ok.

so much easier to read! also, double check to make sure that the text layer is above the coloring layers.

next, i want to move the text to where i want. select the move tool on the left, and first move the text layer all the way to the bottom. photoshop has it so that it is kind of magnetized to the edges. i then go back to the character menu and change the baseline shift setting to 5 pt.

however, when you click to a different gif it doesn’t reset back to 0, so manually reset it back to 0 before moving your text layer, then change it to 5 again.

next, to center it on the gif. first select the gif layer, then hold ctrl while you select the text layer. the order is important, if you select the text then the gif, the gif will be moved to center itself around the text. then, with the move tool still selected, click this button on the top tool bar to align horizontal centers. 

great! now save your gif again, and repeat all these steps for the text for every gif that you are adding text to. most of the time i type the text on each gif first, and then move the text that way i’m not switching tools a dozen times, but it really doesn’t matter.

your gifs are officially done! time to save them in a format that you can upload to tumblr. go up to file, and click save for web and devices. these are my settings, but you can play around with some of the ones on the upper right side. however, you want to make sure that it is a gif, and that it is set to loop forever. those are circled. hit save, name your gif however you want, and save it somewhere you can find it later. do this for all of your gifs.

the other thing i circled in the document size. tumblr does not allow you to upload images that are above 3mb. if yours is above this, you have a few options to cut down on the size. changing the settings on this window such as going from diffusion to pattern, or reducing the number of colors can change the size, but if you reduce the number of colors, you lose some quality. you can also change your coloring layers around, because making a bright gif with a lot of colors can increase the size. black and white gifs tend to be smaller.

the option i tend to go for if i want to keep the colors and quality, is to reduce the number of frames you have. its a little trickier to do in timeline mode than it is when the frames are all there, but this is how to do it. if your gifs are all under 3mb, you can skip ahead to uploading.

in the timeline animation bar, there are blue rectangularish sliders you can move at the beginning and end, as well as a triangular one that shows where you are within the gif. decide the new place where you want the gif to start and end, and move the rectangle sliders there, like so. one tick over does not equal a frame, so i use the triangle indicator to figure out how many frames over i’m moving.

then in the animation bar menu, click trim document duration to work area. this will set your gif to begin and end where those sliders were. at this point you can try saving again to see if your gif is below 3mb. if so, then save it! if not, continue to move the sliders and trim until your gif is below the limit.

so now all your gifs are saved and ready to be uploaded! upload them like you would any other photo post. i always save as a draft first so i can make sure they upload right and so i can look them over again to be sure they are looping correctly and have no typos. only then do i close out of photoshop. tag with the appropriate edit tags (for example, dwedit for doctor who) or tag popular blogs for maximum exposure, but be aware that only the first 5 tags count and will appear in the tags. post and you are done! congrats!

Notes for Storming the Castle, Chapters 1 & 2

Hello to my lovely AkaFuri readers! I just posted Chapter Two of Storming the Castle, so here are my notes for the fic, finally. (It turns out the delay was a good thing, because my plans for the fic changed a bit!)

About the Length/Format

Storming the Castle story should be novella length, around 30K~40K. (Fast Train was 85K, so about half that length or less!) The fic has two main parts, one half of the story for each visit. I was going to divide them into six chapters, whenever I switched point of view, but... That would’ve made two really long chapters, and four short ones? (Plus a longer wait for the long chapters!) So instead, there will be eight shorter chapters. The PoV will go like this:

Furi --> Akashi --> Akashi --> Furi --> Akashi --> Furi --> Furi --> Akashi

(Ch. 2 & 3 are basically like a single chapter from Akashi’s PoV, while 6 & 7 are a single Furi PoV. There will also be a short Furi PoV epilogue at the end.)

... Hopefully it will be obvious why I did this once I post more of the story? Either way, at least the chapters won’t take as long to write as Fast Train. XD (For anyone who liked the longer chapters, the third story in my AkaFuri series should be closer to Fast Train’s length!)

Cultural & Miscellaneous Notes

Here are some notes for Chapters One and Two! Mostly about Japanese culture things. A lot of anime fans are probably familiar with most of this, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to write it, in case anyone was curious or wanted details.

(Also, I should mention that I stole a lot of the things in this fic from my sister’s experiences studying and teaching in Japan, so thank you, @spinelstar! I’ll probably talk about my favorite example of that in my notes for Chapter Three.)

On Sleepovers

Generally speaking, Japanese kids don’t spend the night at their friends’ houses as often as kids in Western countries do. Some of it has to do with space; many Japanese houses don’t have a lot of room for guests, and privacy is limited. But also, it’s a bigger deal for guests to visit in general! That doesn’t mean overnight visits never happen, but there isn’t the same “sleepover culture” that I experienced growing up in the U.S. So Akashi being unsure of the “rules” of sleeping over has partly to do with his upbringing as an Akashi, and partly to do with how it isn’t as frequent in Japan. (Which is why Midorima isn’t sure how to answer his questions, and why a guy like Takao--who don’t care as much about politeness--would just wing it. //laughs)

On Bringing Gifts/Temiyage/Omiyage

On that note, there are Japanese customs for house visits in general. If you visit someone’s home, it’s polite to bring a gift. It’s also polite to insist the gift isn’t very good, and for the recipient to refuse it, sometimes multiple times! The recipient may also wait until later to open it. Here’s a rundown of some fairly common visiting etiquette, and more about gift-giving is here and here. In the fic, Akashi gives Furihata’s mother his gift right away, as it’s intended to be refrigerated. (What it is will come up in Chapter Three!)

Visiting gifts are called temiyage. There’s another type of gift called omiyage, in which Japanese people who go on a trip pretty much anywhere are expected to bring back souvenirs for their friends and family. So basically, there are tons of occasions where Japanese families receive gifts! Often a Japanese home will have some of these items on display, or even stuffed in a closet. (The tendency for this to cause clutter is one reason why food gifts are usually preferred.)

On Zaibatsu

I won’t go into this too much, but Akashi’s family in KnB is pretty clearly supposed to be a zaibatsu. The real-life reality of modern zaibatsu is not the same as in popular fiction... But in anime at least, zaibatsu are incredibly powerful old families who are ridiculously wealthy, and head up massive conglomerates. An example of a real-life conglomerate that started as a zaibatsu is Mitsubishi.

On the Genkan

There are different styles of houses and apartments in Japan, but basically all of them will have a genkan! This is the space right at the front door where you take off your shoes. It’s often lower than the rest of the floor, and you leave your shoes inside. Then you walk around the rest of the house in socks, and/or wear slippers.

It’s not always practical for the host family to provide super comfortable slippers to their guests (it’s more common to have a basic pair, if that), but since Furi and Akashi are so close in size, I thought a lending situation would be cute. ❤️ (Or maybe I just wanted to make a “perfect fit” joke because fairy tales, but uh anyway. XD Though I guess it isn’t really Cinderella, maybe more like The Prince and the Pauper? //laughs)

(Also, for anyone curious, I generally picture the Furihata house as looking something like the third photo in this blog entry, or the sixth photo on this page. Both give you some idea what a typical Japanese house looks like!)

On Summer in Japan

The fic takes place in mid-July of their second year, during the start of summer break. So I tried to incorporate a lot of things that are associated with summer in Japan! Mid-July is when the rainy season ends. The rainy season in Japan is unbelievably humid. Hydrangeas bloom during that time, like the ones outside Furihata’s house. Then after the rainy season comes the really hot summer. (I do not recommend visiting Japan in the summer, personally? I have done it, and... yeah. So much sweating. XD) Japanese coping mechanisms include AC units (usually a wall unit in a room with a remote control), fans of all kinds, chilled barley tea, and food like watermelon and chilled soba noodles. Another Japanese item with summer associations is a glass wind chime. (As in this emoji! --> 🎐)

On Shichi-Go-San

One thing that was specifically Japanese about the photo album Furihata’s mother showed Akashi was the photo of the coming-of-age event Shichi-Go-San. This is a sort of ceremony for Japanese kids that happens first when they turn three, and then again when boys turn five and girls turn seven. It’s a really popular time to take pictures, because the children get dressed up in traditional clothes and go to a shrine for a blessing. They also get candy called chitose-ame, which they usually carry around in a long, colorful bag. It’s supposed to bring them property and long life. (”Chitose” stands for a thousand years.)

(If you haven’t seen little kids doing this in person before, I urge you to do a Google image search for “shichi-go-san” and prepare for your brain to melt because it’s pretty much the cutest thing in the known universe.)

On Furihata’s Family’s Names

It’s probably painfully obvious, but I’ve been dying to write about Furihata’s family for forever! The Furihata surname itself means “below the standard” (via this post!), which is... not the most auspicious name? //laughs But it’s why I always pictured them as a very typical, “ordinary” sort of family.

Kouki (光樹) has the kanji for light in his name, and the full translation in the above post is “establishes brilliance.” I always thought that was such a fitting name for him! I wanted his family’s names to sound a bit like his, while also being common names, and having meanings that fit their characters. For his brother, I tried to pick a name that matched my take on his personality, and I came up with Kintarou (金太郎). Which means “golden first son” (and is also the name of a popular folk tale character!). Furihata’s mother is Kaori, and Furihata’s father is Yoshio. Here are the kanji I picked for them:

香織 = Kaori, “fragrance weave” (shares a kanji with the name Shiori because I’m a mean person, also I like to headcanon that they would’ve gotten along)

良夫 = Yoshio, “good man” (also can be read “agreeable husband” //laughs)

Let’s talk about the Litter Box

So here we are, the big bad issue that I see more frequently than any other problem. For one reason or another, your cat isn’t using the litter box. It is a proverbial minefield (and also sometimes a literal one), and it can be incredibly stressful, for both you and the cat. 

So I will be outlining a general plan for anyone who may be dealing with this problem, or in case you deal with it in the future. While this is generalized for ease of writing, you can easily modify these solutions to fit more specific needs for each individual situation.

So first thing’s first - if your cat is eliminating outside of a litter box (either urine or feces), it is absolutely necessary for you to take that cat to the vet immediately. The majority of litter box problems stem from a physical ailment or issue that the cat is experiencing, and for your cat’s safety, and for your own sanity, you need to deal with that issue immediately. There are a laundry list of reasons medically why your cat may be eliminating outside of a litter box. It may be something easy to fix, such as a urinary tract infection, or it may be something more serious that may require further testing or additional treatment. No matter what though, your first step in solving a litter box problem MUST be to visit your vet.

Why is this so important? Improper elimination can actually continue after a problem has been treated. The reason is called operant conditioning. While your cat was ill, they grew to associate their litter box with painful elimination, which led to them using something other than the litter box, and while fixing the source of the pain is mandatory in getting them back on their feet, it causes the cat to continue assuming that the litter box was causing them pain. What makes it worse? When a cat is cured of their ailment, they may continue to use other locations outside of their litter box. What are they met with? No pain! In a cat’s mind, the pain stems from that litter box use, but since there is no pain anymore, they’re more encouraged to use things that aren’t their box, such as a bedspread, a sink, a laundry basket, etc. This is why it’s important to find medical attention for the cat immediately. It will give them less time to associate that painful elimination with the litter box, and less time to find other places for them to eliminate.

So the health problems are squared away, but you still have an issue with improper elimination. What can you do? Here are multiple steps you can take. Keep in mind that not one single step will work. You have to provide ALL of the steps in order for the behavior to stop!

1. Cease the issue.

This first step can be difficult. First, you will need to thoroughly clean any and all areas where the cat has been improperly eliminating. I highly recommend using enzymatic cleaners, and they sell them in pet stores. When cats smell their scent in an area, it will encourage them to use the area over and over again. Deep-cleaning carpets, thoroughly washing your bedding, it can be strenuous, but it absolutely has to be done.

Once the areas have been cleaned completely, you’ll need to block access to that area for the time being. Blocking off a bedroom or a bathroom entirely will work just by closing the door, but I understand it’s not always possible. Try putting down a layer of plastic, foil, double-sided tape, a pan of water, or anything else you can think of that will keep the cat off of that area. Even putting a large box over an area so the cat can’t get to it. When a cat does not have access to their preferred areas of elimination, they will find the ideal one. Which leads us to our next step.

2. Attract them to the desired area

My vet once told me “Would you prefer to use a toilet in a sparkly clean bathroom with a heated seat and a warm-water bidet, or a truck stop restroom?” That’s what I ask people when they complain about the upkeep necessary for litter boxes. Nobody likes cleaning a litter box. I don’t like cleaning a litter box. But I do it every single day because I know my cats can’t, but they absolutely would if they could. You must make your litter box as attractive as possible to the cat.

Location - Sometimes your cat may not like where you’ve put your litter box. Take a hint from them. Try and place an additional litter box close to where they were improperly eliminating, as close as you’re able to, that is. Make sure the cat has a safe entry and exit route from the box, too. Cats do not enjoy feeling cornered, especially when they’re prone to attack like while they’re eliminating. Yes, this might require you to put a litter box in a bedroom, or a living room, but there are ways (for a different post, I think) to make litter boxes appear a little less intrusive. And if they’re out in the open, you’re more likely to clean them the recommended amount (at LEAST once per day!) If you’re having a difficult time, you may need to clean twice a day.

Type of box - Some cats don’t like some types of litter boxes. Closed-in boxes, while ideal for the average person who doesn’t like seeing cat-poop may actually increase the level of fear the cat has while using the box. There’s one way in and one way out, perfect for an ambush. It also traps in the smell and leaves feces out to remain wet for longer, which is not ideal for the cat. An open-top litter box with 6-inch sides is ideal. There are mats you can use to handle kicked-up litter, or even giving them a box with higher sides but two entrances by cutting them out is preferable.

I do not recommend automatic litter boxes. If your cat happily uses one, great! My concern mostly comes from the fact that people leave these boxes unattended for several days at a time. If a cat has a health problem, it’s in the poo (usually). That’s our first hint that’s something is wrong, and if you’re only checking the tray every week, you could be missing some vital clues for your cat’s health. If you do have one, just make sure to have a daily check to be sure that your cat is healthy!

Type of litter - This one’s a can of worms, but I’ll say it plain. Let your cat pick your litter. Give them options. Some cats will refuse to use food-based litters (corn and wheat based), others will refuse silicone-based litters. It’s up to your cat. Make sure the cat does not ingest any litter at any time, and if they do, try a new one. I can talk on my soap box about the benefits and downfalls of certain types of litter, but right now your goal is to make sure that your cat is USING their box.

Amount - You’ll probably need to increase the amount of litter boxes in your home. The age old amount of cats + 1 = amount of litter boxes rule is a VERY good rule of thumb, but that’s assuming that none of the cats involved are having litter issues. There could be problems with sharing boxes, or location. Provide more than they need.

Other - Make sure the cat does not share their litter box space with other activities. Cats don’t like to eat where they use the bathroom (a feeling I can thoroughly get behind). They also don’t like to play or be pet in that area, too. We’ll cover that in the next (and final) step. You can even purchase litter attractants online that will help a cat find where they need to go! 

3. Transform their problem areas

By this point, you’re probably sick of having to block things off and clean your cats box so many times per day, but we’re almost there, I promise. Your last step is to change the way cats think about their previous problem areas.

Cats, similar to humans, enjoy assigning areas of a house to certain activities. Would you feel weird if you had to suddenly use the bathroom in your kitchen? Or in your living room? Cats have this same sort of avoidance with their litter boxes.

Take those areas where the cats would improperly eliminate before, and transform them into spaces where positive activities take place! Try playing on the bed, for example. Feed them treats near the sink! Offer them food in that corner where they used to go! Very quickly, cats will identify that these areas are for other activities, even brushing and cuddling if they gain positive enrichment from that (each cat is different). They will be inclined to avoid those areas for elimination, and it will strengthen their desire to eliminate in the desired location!

Keep in mind, this process may take a while. I encourage people to try these steps for 30 or even 60 days before they’re entirely successful and the behavior is eradicated. There are other steps needed in regards to spraying or marking, but I will be handling that entirely in a different post, so stay tuned!

Most cats are rehomed or abandoned because of litter box problems. I hope I can help keep cats where they are with their families with these steps.

How to get started on your magickal journey!

Magick is a very real, and powerful thing. It can be learned, and used to not only better your life, but to better the world around you. It is a beautiful art, and science that has been with us throughout, and even before history. It is shaped our cultures, and traditions, and has even been at the focal points of our religions. It is been feared, and it has been praised. It has been used for all manner of tasks, from benevolent acts to malevolent deeds. It has been well understood, and it has been hidden in the occult. There has always been some type of mystical, and occult practitioner that has taken up the use of magick to help, and understand the world around them. You need nothing in particular to be a practitioner. Practitioners are all as different as our practices, and our understandings, but together we all share the universal understanding of magick.

All this post is supposed to help you do is to find a path to start exploring the basics of the occult world, so that you can continue to learn more, and explore your individual path. Magick is a practice that you never stop learning about, there will always be something new to learn, and you will always find yourself being surprised by the things you have found. This practice is very vast, and expansive, and will always keep giving you more as long as you are searching for it. You are about to embark on a very personal individual journey that will teach you much about the world around you as well as yourself. This will allow you to better yourself, and to learn things you never thought you would. Welcome to the beginning of your magickal Journey.

In this post I will be giving you some tips to remember, so that you can build your own foundation, and begin your practice as a magickal practitioner. All of these things I have found very helpful in my own practice, and I have also seen them work very well for others, and because of this I hope that you can also bring it into your own practice, and use it if it resonates with you. So take this information as you would like, and use it as a compass to help direct you to where your path is leading you.

Personal path:

There are a lot of different perspectives from various magickal practitioners. Some are a lot more prevalent than others due to the fact of their upbringing in culture, but you must understand that there is not one path, and there are many various ways of doing things. So look for the best path that suits you, and resonates with your soul. By being more connected to your practice, and enjoying what you are doing, it will allow your practice to flow more smoothly, and achieve the unimaginable. Remember that your path will be unique, and may not even be the same as a person that practices the same tradition as you. By understanding each other's perspectives you can learn, and become even better than you both were separately. Others can be your greatest teachers. Even people that you believe cannot teach you a thing can teach you a lot, as long as you are open to their teachings. It is also a very good idea not to weigh yourself against anyone else's practice, because everyone will be at different points on their path, and will be learning what they need to at that time to get the most out of their experiences. Your path is your own. It is beautiful, unique and will stretch out to exactly where you needed to go. you are an individual, and you can personalize your craft any way that you see fit, so do not be afraid to be your true self, and to experiment.

Know yourself:

knowing yourself is very important. It allows you to have control over yourself, so that you can have control over the world around you. By understanding your spiritual, religious, and philosophical beliefs, and the reasons that you got into magick in the first place will allow your path to run much smoother, and to be more organized, and focused. Take time to think about the big questions, and what you truly believe, and why you are doing certain things. Introspection is key here, and it will help shape your morals, and ideologies going forward allowing you to be more connected with yourself, and the magick that you do.

Magick, and religion:

As a practitioner of magick you can be part of any religion, and still practice magick. Almost all religions have some form of understanding of magick in them, and magick is not exclusive to any religion. You do not even have to be theistic in order to practice, and can even be an agnostic, or an atheist. Your practice of magick does not have to directly correlate with your religion in any way, and can even remain separate. Magick, and witchcraft are not religions, but are practices, and can be practiced by anyone.

Magick is not "evil", nor "good":

Magick, and witchcraft are not objectively inherently "evil" or "good", but our neutral like everything else that exists. "Good" and "evil" are very subjective terms that are completely based off of the morals, or ethics someone holds, and will be greatly influenced by cultural relativism. What you do with your magick, and how it is perceived will determine if it is "good", or "evil" by the person perceiving it based on their own subjective understanding, and experience. Your magick is a tool, and you will decide how you use that tool.

Research:

Research is important, and it will always be good to double check your information. Learn as much as you can about magick, because you never know what information will be valuable later. Do not rely simply on one source for information, but go out, and gather multiple sources, so that you can cross reference that information in order to find out what is reasonable, reliable, and true. There is a myriad of information on magick that can be found in books, online, and in a multitude of different sources. It is a good idea to try not to hold on too tightly to your understandings, but allow them to change, and evolve with you. Remember to also always have a very good healthy amount of doubt, because this will keep you from falling into misinformation, or delusion. Which can be a very easy thing to do especially for a beginner, so be careful, double-check, and always use common sense. Understand everything about the practices, and why they work. Don't just believe things, because people tell you they are true. Ask why it works, then go out ,and deeply analyze the understandings, so you can make sure they are true. Remember that belief alone does not  equal truth, and should be able to be justified in some manner. Knowledge is power, and by knowing things you have power over those things, and will be able to work with those things in order to expand your magickal practice.

Take it slow, and enjoy the ride:

Take it slow you have a lot to learn, and you got a lot of time to do it. You don’t have to jump in so suddenly, and learn everything. Start with the basics, and work your way up. There is no need to go for something so advance in the beginning. Take your time, and get invested, and connected with you with your spiritual path. Remember that it is not a race, and there is no need to try to beat out any other practitioners. You will find the things that are right for you, and they will find the things that are right for them. There may be some times when you need to step away from your practice in order to regroup, and this is perfectly okay. Remember to take time off when you need to it will help you progress in the long run. Do not do anything that you believe you are not ready to handle. Take time, and work up to the harder more advanced things.

Learn the fundamentals of magick:

Take time to learn the fundamentals of magick they will help you later in your practice. It is important to understand why magick works, and how it will react in certain situations. Learn what magick is not, and what magick can do. Learn universal laws, occult philosophy, and magickal theory, and take time to understand them, and how they may work in magickal practice. Understand spiritual concepts, and believes, and understand spiritual energy, and intention. Once you have the fundamentals down you can pretty much make anything fit into that mold, and from there you will be able to work and understand pretty much any magickal practice allowing you to go anywhere that your path leads you.

Learn to protect yourself:

I'm not saying things will go wrong, or even have a high chance to go wrong, but it's better to be prepared for every situation. Learn cleansing, protection, and banishment spells, or rituals as early in your practice as you can. This will keep you safe in case something goes wrong, but these techniques do not have to be the most advanced. Just a way to defend yourself in case of spiritual attack. Your safety is very important, and you should be able to know how to defend yourself in situations where it is necessary. Remember if you feel overwhelmed, or if you can't handle a situation to reach out for help there are so many wonderful practitioners that would be glad to help.

Elemental framework of learning magick, and witchcraft:

This is the path that I would have beginners take. This path is based off of the elements, and the work of Christopher Penczak in his Temple of witchcraft series. In this system you work your way up through the four elements which categorize different types of magickal practices in order to create a base understanding of knowledge that can then be personalized, and individualized openly depending upon what the practitioner wants to get into. This system will start with the element of Fire then it will go to the element of Earth, water, and then air. The system is meant to act as a framework, that will allow you to play around with fundamental constructs of magick. A practitioner following this framework would just have to look up the different terms, and study those terms in order to gain knowledge about them, so that they can begin learning, and practicing magick. Terms in this framework could also be skipped over if the practitioner does not want to learn them, or does not find it necessary to learn them now. My hope is once you finish this framework, you will have enough knowledge to go, and learn what you need to, and to follow your own magickal path.

Chapter 2. Google My Business, Bing Places, and Apple Maps Listings

Claiming and optimizing your Google My Business listing is arguably the most important part of local SEO, although Bing Places and Apple Maps listings are important too. Setting these up isn’t too difficult—you just follow the instructions offered by Google/Bing/Apple. But with GMB in particular, there are a few things that tend to trip business owners up. That’s why I’ve included a full walkthrough below. 2.1. Google My Business Google My Business is a free and easy-to-use tool for businesses and organisations to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps. (Source) According to Moz, GMB is one of the top local ranking factors for both “snack pack” and organic results. To set it up, go here, then follow these steps. Step 1. Enter Your Business Name Google will first ask for your business name. You have two choices here: Create a new business Claim and existing business Start typing, and Google will search for your business in their system.

You’ll see it if they have it. Hit the option to “create a business with this name” if not. RECOMMENDATION Do NOT try to shoehorn keywords here. Enter your business name, and your business name ONLY. For example, if you run a coffee shop in New York called Déjà Brew, then enter Déjà Brew as your business name. Do NOT enter something like Déjà Brew New York Coffee Shop—this is against Google My Business guidelines. Step 2. Enter Your Address Next, Google will ask for your address. If you’re claiming a business that Google already has in their system, this will be prefilled. Otherwise, you will need to enter your address.

If you have a brick-and-mortar business with a storefront, this is easy—just enter your shop address. But you may be confused about what to enter here, if: You work from home. You have one or more business partners, and both work from home (multiple addresses) Your business is mobile (e.g., food truck). You have one or more offices. You have a virtual office, but no real physical location. You serve customers at a physical location AND remotely (e.g., a takeaway). Here’s my advice: If you have a real physical office, use that address. If you (and one or more business partners) work from home, list the home address of the person closest to the primary area your business serves. If you have only a virtual office, DO NOT use this address—not unless this office is “staffed during business hours.” Doing so is against GMB guidelines. Use your home address instead. Remember, consistency is key here, so I suggest copy-pasting the information from the spreadsheet you created earlier to ensure that this is both correct and consistent with the information on your website (and any other business listings you may have). Claiming an existing listing? Double check the information Google has against the info in your spreadsheet. Update if necessary. You will also see a checkbox labelled “I deliver goods and services to my customers.”

Ticking this will indicate that you are a “Service-area business” in Google’s eyes. Basically, you should tick this box if you do, in fact, deliver goods and services to your customers… even if you also serve customers at a physical location (e.g., a restaurant with a takeaway). If you do, you’ll see another checkbox pop up—”Hide my address (it’s not a shop).”

Ticking this means that while Google will know the location of your business (for verification purposes), they won’t show your address to regular ol’ Googlers. It will remain private and unlisted on your GMB page. I recommend checking this box if you listed a home address. Step 3. Enter Your Exact Location The next screen will show a map with a location pin. You can drag and move this around to pinpoint your exact business location.

9 times out of 10, you can trust Google on this. But if it looks like the pin is inaccurately placed, do feel free to move it. Step 4. Choose a Category Google only lets you choose one category when setting up your Google My Business profile. They have a ton of advice about how to choose the correct category here. Here’s an excerpt that will be enough for most people: Select categories that complete the statement: “This business IS a” rather than “this business HAS a .” The goal is to describe your business holistically rather than a list of all the services that it offers, products that it sells or amenities that it features. (Source) Think about what your business IS, then start typing that into the category field. Google will start suggesting categories as you type.

Hit the one that seems most appropriate and hit “Next.” RECOMMENDATION Not sure what category to choose? Look at your competitors. Let’s say that you run shot blasting business in London. If you enter this into GMB, it will return no category results.

However, try searching for “shot blasting ” in Google Maps. You will see which primary category your competitors chose.

You can then steal their category. Step 5. Enter Your Phone Number and Website (Optional) This one is pretty straightforward—just enter your phone number and website URL. Here’s some advice from Google. Remember to be consistent. Use the data from your spreadsheet! Step 6. Verify Your Listing Before your GMB listing goes live, you will need to verify your listing. This is usually done via phone or postcard—just follow the instructions from Google to verify. Step 7. Optimize Your Listing Further Congratulations—you’re verified! But don’t stop there. You should optimize your GMB listing further by: Adding more categories; Uploading some photos (ideally ones taken on your premises or at least nearby, as these will have location metadata attached); Listing your opening hours; Listing any individual services you offer; Adding any additional phone numbers; Adding relevant attributes/amenities; Etc. Here’s a great guide to fully-optimizing your Google My Business listing. I recommend checking it out. 2.2. Bing Places Next up—Bing Places. This is essentially just Bing’s equivalent of Google My Business. Is it as important as GMB? No, not at all. Bing only has a 7.81% market share in the US. Which means it’s about 1/10th as important as completing your GMB profile. But as it only takes a few minutes to set up your profile, it’s still something you should do. And as you’ll see in a moment, there’s a reason it pays to complete your GMB profile first. 😉 To get started, go here and hit “Get started.” STEP 0. Check That You’re Not Already Listed! First up—make sure your business is not already listed on Bing Places. (I can’t stress the importance of doing this enough.) To do this, go to Bing Maps and start typing your business name in the search bar. If you’re already listed, you should see your business appear in the live search results. Let’s try this for Paul’s Meats—a stunning butcher’s shop near my old house.

Bing Places search results for “paul’s meats.” Looks like he’s already listed. If you find this is the case for your business, view the full listing, then hit the “Is this your business?” link in the bottom of the listing. (Yes, they couldn’t have made this any smaller!)

You will then be redirected to a page where you can claim/add your business—it will be partially pre-filled. Step 1. Select Business Type Next up—select your business type and location. Here are your choices for business type: Small of medium business (1–10 locations) Chain business (more than 10 locations) Online business (no physical locations) I manage business listings on my client’s behalf For the purpose of this guide, I’ll assume that you’re a small business with 1–10 locations. If you do run a chain business, hit option #2—Bing will walk you through what you need to do. SIDENOTE. Online businesses (option #3) aren’t eligible for Bing Places listings, so you’re out of luck if you fall under that bracket. But then again, why are you reading this guide if you’re not running a local business!? So let’s hit option #1. Now something magical will happen—there will be an option to import data from Google My Business.

If you’re already verified on GMB, do this. Not only is it a time-saver, but it will also reduce the probability of mistakes. If not, enter your business name and location (I recommend entering a ZIP code) as normal. Bing will then search for your business. But as we already checked this in step #0, it shouldn’t find it. So hit the “Create new business” button.

Step 2. Enter Your Basic Information Now you will need to enter your business name, address, website, etc. SIDENOTE. If you imported your data via Google My Business, this should already be done for you. As with the Google My Business listing, you should copy-paste the data from your spreadsheet to ensure that it remains consistent with other listings. There’s also the option to hide your address from the search results.

You should check this box if you work from home or use a virtual office. Step 3. Choose a Business Segment & Category First things first, if you’re a “healthcare professional or doctor,” tick the special box—that’s you done for the “business segment” part.

Otherwise, hit the “browse” button and select one of the 11 available business segments. Select “I don’t know” if you’re unsure. Then choose the category/categories that your business falls into. Bing’s list isn’t as extensive as Google’s. But unlike Google, you can choose multiple categories (up to 10) here and then select a “primary” category later in the process. I recommend hitting “browse” to bring up a modal window, then searching for an appropriate business category there. It displays categories and subcategories in a more logical manner.

Don’t go crazy here. Just because you can select 10 doesn’t mean that you should—just pick the ones that are truly appropriate for your business. This is usually one or two categories, in my experience. You can then select a primary category from the categories you selected.

Finally, add a short description for your business—sprinkle your keywords throughout, but don’t overdo it. Step 4. Add Phone, Website, Twitter, Facebook, Yelp, and TripAdvisor links Paste in your phone number from your spreadsheet—again, this ensures things stay consistent. Bing also displays social profile links in their Knowledge Graph panel (or whatever Bing calls it) when people search for your business. Here’s an example for Starbucks:

So if you have them, add them. If not, you can always add them at a later date. Step 5. Add Photos Here are Bing’s guidelines for photos. You can add up to 10. 3.3. Apple Maps Apple’s iPhone has a 32.9% market share in the US—that’s ⅓ of all smartphone users, or tens of millions of people. Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably use Google Maps over Apple Maps. But there are two important things to keep in mind: Millions of iOS users still use Apple Maps, as it’s the default maps application on iPhone. Apple is pretty secretive, so I couldn’t find any up-to-date stats on the number of iOS users who use Apple Maps. But, as it’s the default maps application on iPhone, I’d be willing to bet that it’s the majority of iOS users, which is millions of people.   Apple Maps is built into Siri and Spotlight searches. Ask Siri for directions and Apple Maps will open. Same goes for Spotlight searches. Latest stats show Siri is actively used on more than half a billion devices. That’s a lot of people! We Tested Ring’s Security. It’s Awful

It's not so much being watched. It's that I don't really know if I'm being watched or not.

From across the other side of the world, a colleague has just accessed my Ring account, and in turn, a live-feed of a Ring camera in my apartment. He sent a screenshot of me stretching, getting ready for work. Then a second colleague accessed the camera from another country, and started talking to me through the Ring device.

"Joe can you tell I'm watching you type," they added in a Slack message. The blue light which signals someone is watching the camera feed faded away. But I still couldn't shake the feeling of someone may be tuning in. I went into another room.

My colleagues were only able to access my Ring camera because they had the relevant email address and password, but Amazon-owned home security company Ring is not doing enough to stop hackers breaking into customer accounts, and in turn, their cameras, according to multiple cybersecurity experts, people who write tools to break into accounts, and Motherboard's own analysis with a Ring camera it bought to test the company's security protections.

Last week a wave of local media reports found hackers harassed people through Ring devices. In one case a hacker taunted a child in Mississippi, in another someone hurled racist insults at a Florida family. Motherboard found hackers have made dedicated software for more swiftly gaining access to Ring cameras by churning through previously compromised email addresses and passwords, and that some hackers were live-streaming the Ring abuse on their own so-called podcast dubbed "NulledCast."

In response to the hacks, Ring put much of the blame for these hacks on its users in a blog post Thursday.

"Customer trust is important to us, and we take the security of our devices and service extremely seriously. As a precaution, we highly encourage all Ring users to follow security best practices to ensure your Ring account stays secure," it said. To be clear, a user who decides to use a unique password on their Ring device and two-factor authentication is going to be safer than one who is reusing previously hacked credentials from another website. But rather than implementing its own safeguards, Ring is putting this onus on users to deploy security best practices; time and time again we've seen that people using mass-market consumer devices aren't going to know or implement robust security measures at all times.

Ring is not offering basic security precautions, such as double-checking whether someone logging in from an unknown IP address is the legitimate user, or providing a way to see how many users are currently logged in—entirely common security measures across a wealth of online services.

"They are worth billions so where is the investment in security," Daniel Cuthbert, who is on the committee for annual cybersecurity conference Black Hat, and who is also a Ring owner, told Motherboard.

A Ring account is not a normal online account. Rather than a username and password protecting messages or snippets of personal information, such as with, say, a video game account, breaking into a Ring account can grant access to exceptionally intimate and private parts of someone's life and potentially puts their physical security at risk. Some customers install these cameras in their bedrooms or those of their children. Through an issue in the way a Ring-related app functions, Gizmodo found these cameras are installed all across the country. Someone with access can hear conversations and watch people, potentially without alerting the victims that they are being spied on. The app displays a user-selected address for the camera, and the live feed could be used to determine whether the person is home, which could be useful if someone were, for example, planning a robbery. Once a hacker has broken into the account, they can watch not only live streams of the camera, but can also silently watch archived video of people—and families—going about their days.

Or a hacker can digitally reach into those homes, and speak directly to the bewildered, scared, or confused inhabitants. That level of sensitivity should arguably encourage more robust security practices than an ordinary account.

Ring doesn't appear to check a user's chosen password against known compromised user credentials. Although not a widespread practice, more online services are starting to include features that will alert a user if they're using an already compromised password.

Other steps Ring could take to better keep hackers out includes checking whether someone is logging in from an IP address Ring has never seen before, and if so, carrying out additional checks, Cuthbert said. Another is checking for concurrent sessions, such as seeing whether the user is simultaneously logged in from, say, both Germany and the U.K., Cuthbert added, in case one of those may be a hacker accessing the account.

One member of a hacking forum who codes cracking tools, and who Motherboard granted anonymity so they could speak more openly about the process, said, "just enabling SMS verification if there is a connection from an unknown IP would instantly kill each checker." A checker is a piece of software that grinds through credentials to see if they work on a particular site or service.

CRACKING RING

Motherboard purchased a Ring camera to test what sort of security protections are in place to stop or slow hackers trying to break into Ring accounts. After setting up an account, the Ring app, and the camera itself, we shared the email address and password to the camera interface with multiple reporters who used both virtual private network software to connect to the camera from IP addresses from all over the world as well as physically being located in other countries.

We logged into the Ring app and website from the U.S., U.K., Spain, and Singapore, in some cases simultaneously and from various devices and browsers that had never been used to log into the platform before. At no point did Ring trigger any sort of alert, such as an email notification, to check that the IP address the system had never seen did indeed belong to the legitimate camera owner. Gmail, for instance, may email you if it detects a suspicious login attempt from a new location, a new device, or a new browser.

On a desktop web browser, someone who is logged in is able to watch historical, archived footage. From a smartphone app, someone who is logged in can watch live and historical footage, listen through the camera's microphone, speak through the camera's speaker, play an alarm, see the name of the specific Wi-Fi network the camera is connected to, see the address the user originally registered the Ring camera with, see the phone number a user has entered into the app, and see nearby crime "incidents." This shows the specific, user-selected home address plotted on a map. Ring requires that a user input a home address to set up the camera.

Multiple Motherboard staffers accessed these services simultaneously. But Ring provides no way to see how many people are logged in at once, meaning if a hacker is logged into the app, a Ring owner has no way to tell. If a user is livestreaming the camera feed, a blue light on the front of the camera turns on; however, many Ring users may not constantly be checking whether this light is on or not. Ring also doesn't appear to provide users a list of previous login attempts, making it harder to see if a hacker had access.

Ring hackers' software works by rapidly checking if an email address and password on the Ring web login portal works; hackers will typically use a list of already compromised combinations from other services. If someone makes too many incorrect requests to login, many online services will stop them temporarily from doing so, mark their IP address as suspicious, or present a captcha to check that the user trying to login is a human rather than an automated program. Ring appears to have minimal protections in place for this though. Motherboard deliberately entered the wrong password to our account on the login portal while connecting from the Tor anonymity network dozens of times in quick succession. At no point did Ring try to limit our login attempts or present a captcha.

"Headers can tell the website how legitimate a request is," they wrote along with the screenshot, headers referring to information a web request can include to give more information about the machine logging in. Headers can include the browser or operating system the request comes from, which could indicate if a login attempt is automated by software. "But Ring's security is such that even with minimal headers, you can get by," they added.

"Ring is a physical thing, they could implement something to securely pair it with an app on your smartphone. Then, mobile app approves web logins from untrusted web browsers," Dino Dai Zovi, mobile security lead at Square, wrote in a tweet on Sunday.

Security is a trade-off with efficiency. Ring may not want to have stricter checks in place so as to not raise barriers for its users. Perhaps a customer is out of the country but still wants to log into their account and check what has happened in view of the camera, meaning they may connect from a new IP address. But even with this trade-off in mind, Ring has made decisions to not provide users alerts with new logins or other protections.

Ring does offer two-factor authentication, where a user is required to enter a second code sent to them as well as their password, but Ring does not force customers to use it. Motherboard verified that Ring's two-factor authentication does work as advertised, but multiple people who were logged into the app didn't have to log back in after it was enabled—Ring didn't eject them nor ask them to enter a two-factor token. Ring did log everyone out after a password change, however.

Motherboard asked Ring a series of specific and detailed questions, such as whether Ring limits the number of login attempts, or blocks an attempt if the connecting IP address is from a country the user is not usually located in. The company responded with a statement nearly identical to its earlier one, saying, "Ring understands what a big decision it is to pick a home security product, and we don’t take that decision lightly. Ring will continue to introduce additional security features to keep Ring accounts and devices secure, and we're working with our customers to ensure they have the knowledge and tools to practice good password habits."

The victims of Ring hacks have said themselves that they feel the company is putting too much burden on them to stop hackers. Ashley LeMay, one of the parents in Mississippi whose camera was hijacked to then spy on their children, told the New York Times she thought Ring's response provided scant information and shifted responsibility for the breaches onto customers.

"Auth [authentication] is still stuck in the '90s," Cuthbert said. "Username and password and very little other than that. That was ok back then but today we have a wealth of knowledge and experience to know that we need additional telemetry to make the [authentication] decision," he added.

Ring is advertised as a home security device which is supposed to make its customers safer by monitoring their homes. But its lack of certain security features shows how the device can work against its owners, and open them up to other risks. When I get home tonight, I'll put the Ring camera back into its box, regardless of whether that little blue light is on or not.
