I'm barely to the massacre and I can already tell I'm going to be screaming at every this-makes-no-sense decision made by the writers (your temple is under violent attack, and you evacuate the kids... to a barely enclosed corner in a prominent temple room? Instead of to the hundreds of sky bison that were highlighted as flying in earlier? Why?) (And Aang left to clear his head and think instead of to run from his duties? That's such a less compelling plot arc?) (And the show had him briefly monologue about being a goofy kid who loves pies and his friends instead of using the extended temple scene to show any of that? Yeah I'm just. Going to be screaming at the screen instead of enjoying this. Different decisions aren't necessarily bad, but when those decisions seem to be in the direction of "show a man burning alive before we even get to the on-screen massacre" this is just... not the show for me.

I enjoy shipping, but I cannot see the appeal in watching shows only for the purpose of shipping; I think it closes you off to so much. I think coming into a work with the expectation that it will only succeed if a particular configuration of people end up happily in a relationship with each other when the curtain closes means you will reject so many unexpected choices altogether. It destroys your ability to appreciate the entire concept of tragedy. Just, imagine refusing to let yourself enjoy "I'm not a gardener" because you are too furious that a different kiss than the one you wanted happened to feel other emotions.

This might not be anything, but while writing about your fics, the way you have the characters' mannerisms down PERFECTLY got me thinking about mirroring...

There's a lot of it in 7 (Horii is a directorial genius etc etc), most of it more intentional than these probably are, but there's something so interesting about mirroring that takes the tone of a (relatively) fond memory, a familiar gesture, and inverts it in the way shown here.

OH I'M GLAD YOU'VE NOTICED THESE TOO I think I mentioned it months back (or I drafted a post 'bout it but didn't think it was anything noteworthy) but I always really did like how the Arakawa Family mimicked each other's mannerisms (also circling back to how Jo and Masato calling Ichiban 'Ichi' presumably after picking it up from Arakawa)!

Aoki actually does the same sitting gesture too! I went back to double check and skim through the rest of the game's cutscenes, and as far as I could tell unless I skipped a scene, it really is only these three that do this specific pose:

if someone so obviously does not want to be doing what they're doing -- if someone says they should not be a chef, for example, and then says that they're opening a restaurant? the first question most people would ask is: "why are you doing that then"

what claire says is "you're doing the thing!" which. i don't actually have words for that response. what in the brain-dead -- i don't care if that's what you remember of him from school or being kids or whatever, how on earth is that the response?

"01....0....2." it's a VERY deliberate choice to give her the wrong number. this isn't a spur of the moment choice, he thought this through. and when she repeats it back and he has the chance to say "oh no 01 sorry", he just says "yup", no hesitation. they're emphasizing to the view that he's okay leaving it there, that this is done on purpose, that he's lying and that he knows he's lying

now there are a multitude of reasons for him doing this. if you think he does actually want contact with her, then it could be he doesn't believe she actually would want to talk to him, he doesn't have any idea how to handle her and is running, etc.

you could even say that this is classic Carmy repression -- he's not letting himself do something he wants to do because he's repressing the desire for it. that one's probably the strongest argument -- really the only valid argument -- on that side

but.

i think that the reason to have this in this episode specifically? is because he and syd have that conversation about the three-star call in this episode

remember what he says? first 10 seconds feels like a panic attack, b/c you know you'll have to keep it up. your brain skips any sort of joy or celebration, and settles instead on dread. that's carmy's experience with getting an honor few get in the culinary world, and it shows that he's actually not happy in being a Chef-with-a-capital-C. this episode fairly beats that into the viewer, honestly

i think it's the same thing here. he knows if he gives her his number that he'll have to keep it up. his brain skips any sort of happiness and settles on dread. and -- finally taking his own advice here, probably because he just mentioned he should take his own advice, carmy is quite introspective, he's just a little Blocked when it comes to his own emotions -- he decides that it's not worth it. the panic and the dread and the sheer effort it would take to maintain this is not worth it

this conversation is not shot like it's easy. carmy's leaning on the side of the freezer like he needs something to physically prop himself up. the lighting is great for claire, who's comfortable, but it washes carmy out, makes him look even more tired.

full disclosure, i don't know anything more than the fact that she goes behind his back (!!! i will have words!!) in the coming episodes sometime to get his real number, that's the extent of my knowledge.

but even without knowing that, watching this conversation? this isn't a full-fledged chekov's gun, this is at most a chekov's water pistol. she's gonna be here, but she's not gonna be omnipresent. her presence -- which i'm guessing will work largely as a distraction, pulling carmy away from The Bear, as well as being a Specter of the Past -- will cause conflict, rather than build a relationship. shot in the dark work, but given that we're shown how Carmy has a problem going all-or-nothing, and last season he went overboard on the "all" part of that, i'm guessing this season she'll be used to demonstrate the "nothing" part of his personality

which will cause problems and conflict, yes, and also provide an opportunity for the other chefs in the kitchen to grow into the roles they'll need to fill in carmy's eventual (permanent) exit from the kitchen. i get the feeling that the sign for "sorry" introduced here is gonna get quite a bit of airtime

this is long and rambly, but yeah! that's episode 2 -- two very relaxed season openers, i'll note -- we've got 8 to go, and i can feel the un-caged bear getting restless enough to start causing a ruckus....

you can start with stampede! i'd say knowing the context of the original enhances the experience but isn't necessary to enjoy the show. I would consider stampede more viewer-friendly, especially for those of us who are used to modern storytelling conventions (the original suffers the consequences of general writing trends in anime at the time it was produced and of the fact that it was produced long before the manga was finished, so the story is somewhat disjointed and has a lot of filler which makes it REALLY hard to get into.) if you do end up liking stampede, however, I'd suggest trying out watching at least SOME of the original because it adds a lot of cool nuance and context to the story that stampede tells!

#your only REAL handicap is that you're missing out on references that clue you into the context of the story early on #and quite a few references in the finale. but none of those references are hugely necessary to understand the plot so you should be fine! #i didn't DISLIKE the origial and like i said im glad i watched it first but it was. REALLY hard to get into. #even as someone who understands writing trends & enjoys a lot of older anime trigun is. a product of its time. #there's almost no context given for the story you're witnessing until a good 20 episodes in. #the main villain isn't named at all until halfway through the runtime #and even TWO EPISODES BEFORE THE FINALE i still did not have enough information to fully understand what the hell was going on #vash was going into the final fucking battle and i still didn't know what knives WAS let alone what the fuck he WANTED #not to mention nick was FULLY DEAD and i still didnt know what his deal was. like ok go off king have ur moment bleeding out in the church #but can you EXPLAIN WHATS GOING ON BEFORE YOU SUCCUMB TO THE BLOOD LOSS PLEASEEEEEEEE GOD #stampede does that whole thing WAY better imo. it sprinkles the backstory more naturally throughout the show #again. part of this is 90s writing conventions. but there's only so much i can take fr #it was like comparable to evangelion in terms of LACK OF CONTEXT #anyways. this isnt supposed to be me complaining about the original. it had its moments. i watched 24 episodes of it like it was not BAD #but like. i think the story really benefits from the way that stampede chooses to lay everything out. is what im saying. #tldr watch them in whatever order but if you like stampede try the original #you might not like it more than stampede but you WILL feel cool when you realize how it all relates to stampede #asks #vash is also WAAAAAY sexier in stampede. HOWEVER. the women of the show are like 10 times sexier in the original. so. pick your poison ig

me to Nina yesterday: explaining how due to a headache and exhaustion I wasted away the end of my afternoon just watching Ryan Gosling interviews

Nina, instantly sympathetic: and I completely understand that, a valid thing to do

#the thing about Nina is that most of the time she not only hates my coping mechanisms she also plain doesn’t understand them #one of the many tensions of our relationship #but she was just 100% like yeah. I fully get it #and it made me feel so much better #my relationship with Nina the work of a lifetime because the moments of mutual understanding are so rare #but so powerful when they happen. and it takes years to discover that sudden gold #(my mom is often so troubled by our relationship. she’s just like (whisper voice): do you guys even like each other) #because we’re just SO sparks fly (antagonistic version) in many of our interactions #and it’s just like. YEAH. We’re just going to have an intense altercation and clashing of opinions viewpoints values and perspectives #at least every other day. LOL #but we will navigate it! #no one on the planet I smooth things over with as fast as Nina. it is lightning-speed reconciliation #because we both move on so quickly in the same way. in that the mood will just lift #we got in a fight the other day. Nina left and stormed out. 10 minutes later I get a text going #‘I’m sorry Maria. I should not have said that about your mother’ #which made me laugh because we weren’t fighting about our mom. She just likes to quote Jacqueline from ever after sometimes out of context #and my mom was on the couch watching me like ‘you’re reconciled???? It’s over?????????’ #because my mom a) is so different from both of us in the speed she processes in and b) has no sisters #0 sisters. 4 daughters. and she still isn’t used to it lol. because my mom’s strength and weakness is that she never gets used to anything! #ALSO Nina told me the other day that I’m the one that taught her to apologize because I would just make her do it when we were kids #not to me but to other people! I would just sit there and explain how verbal acknowledgement of wrongdoing would make things better #and she was always like ‘ughhh I hate it so much. FINE’ because she always does want to make things better #anyway this SHOOK ME TO MY CORE. Because I never thought Nina actually internalized any of the things I’ve said to her ever lol #and she was like ‘yeah you gave me that good habit’ #(I love apologizing. Love to put it into words and I have an intense need to do it immediately and thoroughly) #(tbh it’s only with time that I’ve come to see that other people do not work that way. and need more time. and are not just — #instantly comfortable putting everything into words especially the hard things) #(because it’s not like I’m always driven by more charity and compunction. I just ducking HATE unresolved things not put into words) #(so it helps me feel better. and sometimes you just gotta learn to not say it right away if it’s only going to make things worse #(or learn to say it in different way without words. that actually communicates the sorrow. And that can sometimes look like giving space!)

for all my grievances with tangled the series, one thing i cannot criticize them for is their songs, i mean, sure, not all of them make sense in context (let me make you proud comes to mind), the songs are spectacular, from the vocals to the instrumental, all of them are a joy to listen to, whether they are just incredibly goofy, like the buddy song, to heartbreaking, like waiting in the wings, whether its a solo, a duet or a group, they are wonderful to listen to

#i like the show. dont get me wrong. #though i cant deny there are a lot of flaws to the series n character n story decisions that dont make sense n infuriate me #and i will say imo season 1 is where its at its best. although yes flaws are present they dont. idk. ruin the season for me #but i cant say the same for the later two seasons. i mean. i had fun with s2 n liked the new characters but. a lot of it again imo is fille #but s3 is the worst imo cause the stakes are so high but they spend like 2-4 episodes actually on the main plot #n the rest is just. pointless filler. i mean. did we really need to learn more about fucking nigel of all characters #n i will say i am not a fan of cass' arch at all. i liked her in the first season n most of the second season but s3 just. ruins her for me #i also dont like how they treated euguene most of the time. he deserved to be treated better. he was the other main character in the movie #he deserved to be treated better not put in the back so as not to outshine cass n rapunzel's relationship #cassunzel this it not a critique of you. i liked the ship in the beginning to n i love the poly of cass rapunzel n euguene #n you can ship them to your hearts content. im just annoyed at the disrespect of euguene lol #can you tell that im passionate about the show. i mean. the potential was there but. they didn't do nothing with it. #im upset it couldnt be better lol #anyway what was i talking about #right the songs. the songs are spectacular (despite almost all of them not making sense in the context of the shows) #n are a joy to listen to. i love them all so much that i dont think there's any i dislike really. the songs are so so good #n are really fun to listen to. its one of the things that i can never fault the show for. they're wonderful n everyone should listen to the #even if you havent watched the show lol they're great #tangled the series #tts #strawberry speaks

#this one isn't in any way the best thing i've done but the scan makes it look sooo ugly compared to the real thing sorry guys #spn #spnart #spn art #spnabstract #mine.caro #this one was honestly just me trying to figure out what to do with the acrylics parts i'd already painted with nothing specific in mind #and this is what i came up with but i still might do something faith!dean related in the future that i start with that in mind #i kept thinking it was the wrong colors for this and it should be more blueish but then i realized i was thinking of the eps color scheme #and that's not how this works #but anyways. the overall idea is that there's a line between dean and god. el greco painting but horizontal #left side holy right side mundane. but the mundane side has falling pieces of holiness like falling particles in the sea and the odd plant #the holy hand reaches out to dean and he kneels down for it.reduced to tangran shapes. and he reaches out to it in turn #and it swallows him up. god's eye looking above. hell's eye watching him below. one right in front of him across the curtain of holiness #(purgatory). basically putting the faith moment in context with the whole dean vs god thing and also his future journey between heaven&hell #and he's lonely! and yearning! he reaches out and tries to catch what's out there regardless of believing its out there or not #and it goes right through him. i did it as specks of rain that pierce him like knives bc anything bigger and more central would have #looked like stigmata. and that's not really dean's game. those aren't his parallels here. well kinda but not in this sense #i get if this one doesn't really hit bc i did it just to finish a wip and it loses A Lot with the gold gone #but i still wanted to post it
