Guess who just got tickets to see this guy for the first time live in concert? 🤩 I'm already planning what to wear and the concert isn't until next spring. 😂 Rainbow pants, mismatched patterns, and animal ears I can do, but I draw the line at Crocs. 🫠
I know people have very mixed feelings about Jacob Collier. When I hear someone say "no amount of musical theory can teach you how to write a good song" I can... ugh, I guess if I strain I can see what they're saying? His lyrics are basic a lot of the time. His voice is very limited. He changes key and plays with tonality in a way that I suppose can feel arbitrary
But that's just the thing - he's playing. I listen to his work and I hear a Mozart-level genius just playing in a sandbox. He produces songs that don't sound like anything anyone else is making, that don't sound like anyone else could make, and it feels like an effortless game he's playing to pass the time. Putting a djent section at the end of what might be your most beautiful song? lol you fuckin dork
His music feels like the purest form of songwriting to me - what happens when someone has a borderline-supernatural mastery of music and uses it to fuck about and make albums in their bedroom for fun.
Jacob is an absolute god of music, music runs through him much more than blood does. Watching him answer these questions from people, you can get a hint at how he sees and feels music in a way that is beyond what everyone else does.
