#Japanese food vs American food
mhablog · 11 months
Text
So Suneater mainly fights with squids and crabs and other seafood because Japanese food has a lot of seafood in it because they are on an island right? Now imagine if he was born in America how would that change his fighting style? I’m guessing bull horns but what are your ideas?
What about other countries how would their natural diet affect his fighting style?
Just some Food (lol) for thought

For those who read widely and take an interest in Asia — likely readers of this article — chances are they will have picked up a book put out by Tuttle Publishing at one time or another.
History of Tuttle Publishing
While the Tuttle family business can be traced back to 1832, making it one of the oldest American publishers still in operation, according to the company, the Japan presence was established in 1948 when Charles Tuttle, noticed a gap in the market.
Initially arriving in Japan to work in the newspaper industry as part of the American Occupation, Tuttle later began importing American books for U.S. troops stationed in the country, and ferrying Japanese books back to the United States for interested readers.
He later opened what was reportedly Tokyo's first English-language bookstore, before publishing thousands of Asia-focused books himself. Before his death, Tuttle was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure by Emperor Showa for his work.
Tuttle Publishing and Japan
Tuttle’s longtime presence in the market means it has an extensive back catalog that is now in high demand, fueled by the current boom in interest in Japanese culture. As interest in Japanese authors has grown, so has demand for Tuttle's early print editions.
“Because they’re hard to get hold of ... they can go for silly prices sometimes, because people collect them or tourists want Japanese literature,” he said. Tourists in particular go straight for them, as they’re hungry for Japanese stories to take home as souvenirs.
Prints vs Digital and AI
Despite people long decrying the death of print or the end of books, the publishing industry is growing stronger. During the pandemic in 2020, Tuttle saw a surge in book sales, and while this has subsided somewhat, “book sales are now higher than before the pandemic.”
Personally, although reading digitally on tablets is much more convenient and save space on bookshelf, the feeling of holding something physical, the smell of books and the sense of detachment from the world in going offline is something that readers love.
Below are 10 books that I have read from Tuttle Publishing that I would recommend those who are interested in Japanese culture.
A Brief History of Japan
The perfect book to understand Japan's history as it sums up everything concisely, not too brief and not too detailed.
A History of Japan in Manga
If you're not into reading books full of texts and more of a visual reader, then this one is for you as it's explained with manga.
The Heikei Story
The defining moment in history where the warrior class Samurai began to rise to its prominence to overthrow the Imperials.
Hiroshige's Japan
Join a French artist as he explores the old Tokaido Road that once connected Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto as he shares his illustrations.

A collection of woodblock printing art which journals the travelers experience in Edo Period moving from one prefecture to the other.

A cute travel diary which accounts her travel experience in modern Japan which consists of illustrations of places she visited.
Japan in 100 Words
Everything you need to know about Japan, from its culture, tradition, philosophy, food and pop culture, categorised into 100 sections.
Samurai Castles

Oh, this is going to be a fun one! (I hope.) Not necessarily romantic (but you can if you want!!) 14 or 22 for Larry and Edgeworth! (Ace Attorney)
Asks that remind me I never uploaded my Larry Zine fic to Ao3. Did that by the time you get this prompt fill, but Here's that for those who have not seen it. On with the main event!
14. phone call and 22. reunion hug
Although Miles has spent more time far across the ocean than here—speaking German in quaint little towns with clear skies, winding waterways, and unique historical architecture—Los Angeles with its sea of skyscrapers and palm trees mixed with shrines and Japanese street food stands is still the only city he truly calls home. It’s good to be back—or at least it would be were he not stranded at LAX for the past several hours with no ride in sight. He wants to sleep in his own bed!  For god’s sake, what could be taking him so long?
Bzzzzt. Through the many layers of his suit and coat, his phone vibrating is still more felt than heard in the endless noise of Terminal B. It doesn’t last long. “What happened?”
“Not even a hello? Rude!” whines the voice on the other end, loud enough Miles has to pull the phone away from his ear despite the surrounding cacophony.
“Butz, I was on a flight for 12 hours in a cramped economy seat, and now I’m sitting on my suitcase in an airport terminal. You try being congenial in these circumstances.”
“Listen man—” Larry starts, and a horn blares from nearby him, “—the traffic out here is TERRIBLE! What do you want from me? It’s like Moozilla vs Gourdy levels of people trying to leave town, and then the car—” Another horn. Again? Larry pulls away from the mic and yells, “Hey, watch it, buddy! I’m right here!”
A horrible thought strikes him, accompanied by the image of a beat up Honda CR-V smashed like an accordion against a highway K-rail: “Please tell me you are not still behind the wheel.”
“What? No!” Thank god. “I’m crossing the street! These guys are crazy out here! They almost hit me with a car!”
“Well, those are LA drivers for you,” Miles drawls with the faintest hint of a smirk. He really ought to stop underestimating Larry; although his choices are usually dubious, he agreed to pick him up on short notice when no one else would.
“They’re out for blood! My life is at stake!”
“I’m sure you will survive the perils of crossing the street.”
“What about the guys riding the curb? Nowhere is safe! I might not have any feet after this! And I don’t think you know how to drive American cars…”
What kind of ridiculous assumption is that? It’s just a car! It can’t be that different! “Just hurry up.”
“I’m doing my best!” Larry yells. “Why didn’t you get a cab? Most people do.”
“I had not planned to return home this soon, and…” How could he? Who would have expected this? And only a mere two weeks after Miles swore to reform the entire legal system! As soon as the news graced his phone screen, well…let’s just say he panicked, and after an uncountable number of rejected calls and going straight to voicemail before that too was turned off, he booked the soonest flight home without regard to logistics; it only occurred to him mid-flight he does not have means to get home. “I was not quite thinking clearly.”
“He really provokes something else in you, huh?” The who remains unspoken. For his numerous idiosyncrasies and struggles with basic logic, for matters of the heart, Larry is strikingly intuitive. Though Miles did not once say why he was already back home in that call sitting in the back of the plane waiting to get out, the wobbling wave weaved through every word must have given him away.
There’s a pause—1…2…3—then a sigh. “Yes.”
“Yeah, I get it,” Larry says, in a quiet voice, or at least as quiet as he can manage in the interminable noise of LAX’s international terminal. “It’s good you came back.”
‘I agree’, Miles thinks. ‘I had to,’ he affirms. ‘Was there any other choice?’ he asks. ‘It is the least I can do to pay him back for all he’s done for me,’ he confesses. ‘I may not be able to do much more than this; the undertaking I’ve begun is so massive, and already I’ve lost one of my greatest allies,’ he worries. ‘I did not envision beating back this darkness alone,’ he despairs. ‘But I must,’ he resolves. ‘Perhaps it’s fitting that my work begins with changing the legal world to bring him back.’
“Mm.” A grunt will have to suffice. He’s sure that Larry understands that without it being spoken as well.
Larry says something indecipherable, muffled by something blocking the microphone, but before Miles can ask him to repeat it, there’s a shout and an abrupt click. “Now who is being rude,” he grumbles, looking up from his phone right as an orange track suit comes rocketing towards him.
“Edgeyyy!!!” He yells, loud enough to turn the heads of several tourists, although if he notices, it affects him not one whit.
“You’re causing a scene,” Miles says, giving a pointed glance to the other stragglers loitering in this corner who are now gawking at Larry as he jumps over suitcases and sprints across the tile floor.
To his surprise, Larry actually listens, skidding to a sudden stop with an “Oops!” about five feet away, and the tourists return their attention elsewhere. “I was gonna give you a welcome back hug, but then I figured you don’t really like that kinda thing.”
“A good assumption,” Miles says and picks himself off his luggage. Everything is still here—yes. Exactly where it should be. “Alright. We should make haste.” I cannot bear this noise for even one second longer.
But Larry says nothing and remains firmly rooted in place even as Miles starts wheeling his way out; whereas before he wore a smile too big for his face, now his mouth is curved into an uneasy half-frown.
“What’s wrong?”
“Sorry. I was just thinking about something.”
Normally, Miles would say, ‘a rarity,’ but with that wavering misty gaze, it’s clear now is not the time for snark. “About…?”
“I’ve never been to this part of the terminal before. Y’know. For arrivals.”
That’s it? But Miles bites his tongue. Obviously, that is not merely it, but what it is is beyond him. Miles is nothing like Larry; for him, emotions are an enigma beyond understanding. And I have no evidence to work with! Well, that’s not strictly true. Think! His phrasing suggests Larry’s been here for departures, and yet never the return. That’s not how traveling works—you have to return home—but Miles didn’t take him as the traveling type for several reasons, so that only leaves… “Ah.”
Miles has never given much thought to Larry’s myriad relationships. They never last very long;  he can hardly remember any of his former girlfriends’ names, only that they tend to be models and actresses, and at some point, without fail, they leave to travel abroad. Presumably, they must come back, in the same way Miles does, but…not for him. They never come back to him.
Passengers from the latest arrival pour out from the hallway out of customs and into the lobby in droves, reuniting with their loved ones waving them down with enthusiastic shouts of “Welcome home!” Not far from them, a middle-aged man welcomes a girl home, perhaps his daughter, with outstretched arms, and she tackles him with a laugh.
“Anyway, we can head out,” Larry starts, speeding towards the exit but without the bombast from earlier, “but I gotta warn you it’s really bad out—”
“Larry.” Deep breaths. Inhale. Exhale. You can manage this.
“What?” Larry says. He hasn’t stopped.
“Come here.” His arms move like they belong to a rusted machine, disjointed, clunky and slow and slow, and Miles has never felt less in control of his limbs before. How does anyone do this?
“Why? Aren’t we leaving? I thought you wanted to go home.”
“Butz so help me—”
“Dude, make up your mind—” But Larry’s words putter out once he finally turns around, and he stands there with his mouth still hanging open. It flaps, open, then less, again and again as he tries yet fails to speak.
Yes, I know I look ridiculous! This was a terrible idea! What is he doing? Why is he doing this? Yes, they’re friends, but it’s not like he can fix it! He didn’t come home for Larry’s sake either, so isn’t this a meaningless, symbolic gesture of pity? What’s the point?
“Edgeeeeyyyy!!!,” Larry cries, and once again barrels across the airport terminal, crashing into Miles at full force, almost knocking them to the floor were it not for Miles’ luggage behind them, but despite the strength of the crash, the hug itself is gentle. Enthusiastic, but gentle. “I missed you, man!!”
“I was not even gone a week.” The rust in his arms slowly falls away when Miles hugs him back.
“Still!” Larry says as he steps back with a sniff. “Only you can make offering a cheer-up hug look like struggling to lift 200 pounds.”
“Nnngghhh—” Must he say it so bluntly? Curse his intuition!
But Larry’s impossibly big smile from earlier is back, so maybe this humiliation is okay. “It’s good to be back, right?”
Yes, it is. Los Angeles is a mess of skyscrapers and shrines and endless horrific traffic, a city rife with corruption that stretches deep into the foundation of government, yet just as filled with people who would drop everything to come get him, no matter how ill-tempered and emotionally inarticulate he is. “Yes, it is.” Thank you.
Larry waves him off. Once again, Miles is understood without speaking.

Zipang P2
It was very hard to piece together a thought process considering the jump for today's assigned episodes, but I will do my best here. Also, I cannot distinguish the characters, despite the art style differences (Tin-Tin eyes vs anime eyes).
After the Mirai was attacked by American planes, the leader's resolve was clearly broken. You can't blame his mistakes on him because pretty much anyone today has never experienced WWII. While there were wars, none were World Wars. Japan after WWII had not experienced true battles, so the scare tactic to frighten with minimal violence was not enough. Even though I'm sure they knew about Japanese kamikazes and suicide missions, I don't think they connected the soldiers of this era had the "die trying" mindset.
Also, we got to understand what the title means to the anime/manga. While yesterday's presenter told the origins of the word "Zipang," hearing it from the characters was just as important. "Zipang" is "Japan" but the original name before it became Japan. Sort of like how "Peking" (if you are unfamiliar, perhaps Chinese food lovers can tell you about the importance and cultural significance of Peking roasted duck.) referred to the capital of China before it became "Beijing." While Western languages do not usually pronounce the words accurately (every language pronounces foreign words a little off, so it's kind of, not really, fair; looking at you, "bao-buns", "lo mein-noodles", "matcha-tea", etc.), how the show interprets Zipang is quite sentimental. Instead of becoming a country shaped by the Imperialist Japanese who do not have the country's best interest or by foreign forces post-war occupation, Zipang refers to a nation governed for the people's lives by people making informed choices in their lives. In a way, it definitely speaks against the State by encouraging a self-governed population, but Kusaba's vision is executed by dark hero's methods that continue to involve killing or manipulating people. In other words, he is acting very un-Jesus-like here.

Addressing the Troubles: Part 3 / 3
English Dubs and the Early Years of Figuring Out Anime:
Back in the 00’s, the television industry was still figuring out anime. At the time, there was still a general prevailing attitude in North America that cartoons on TV were for children– even the more “mature” cartoons of the 90's like Batman: The Animated Series, Reboot, Gargoyles (actually, the Gargoyles voice acting fuckin' ruled), Beast Wars, etc., as a loose tendency, were the realm of bombastic voices and over-the-top, scenery-chewing performances. And god bless those performances! Where would we be as a nation, as a culture, if not for Mark Hamill’s Skeletor, his Joker?
But this approach was less suited for dubbing anime. Sure, if you put that kind of sauce on a Sailor Moon villain, or a fun little DBZ alien guy, it works out okay! But it falls apart when you get to the serious stuff, and even the average 90’s goofball anime had *serious stuff*. When those moments weren’t given the requisite amount of sobriety, the dub very quickly became a disservice to the spirit of the original, and even young audiences could tell.
Different studios took different approaches of course, and some of them caught on more quickly than others-- but in a large number of cases, the Japanese voice acting was just guaranteed to be better. They had an industry of professionals that took that job very, very seriously, and for the most part Western shows hadn’t gotten that degree of legitimacy yet.
There's a massive divide between Japanese and English drama-- separated not just by language, but by hundreds of years of theatrical traditions that share no common ancestor. There are whole character archetypes we don't have a direct equivalent for in the West, levels of intonation that don't translate, portrayals of sexuality and gender expression that we had no cultural context for, types of dramatic timing we had no idea what to do with for a couple decades. North American television studios simply didn’t have enough experience with those cultural and theatrical differences to handle the conversion well. There are plenty of famous examples of early dubs trying and failing to find substitutes for Japanese terms, idioms, honorifics, foods (“donut” from “onigiri”, and so forth).
These were the years when the “dub vs. sub” war had any kind substance to it– because kids, you only got to buy whatever language was on the VHS tape that Suncoast or Blockbuster was selling. And if you didn’t show up for the subbed version of an anime, the less likely you were to ever get it. DVD’s, with their selectable audio options and subtitle tracks, were still on the horizon.
This is also why fan-subs started showing up, because the kids were smart and wanted a better understanding of their favorite shows; they were fed up with these butchered attempts at localization. “All according to *keikaku… *Keikaku means: Plan” is hilarious in retrospect, but it was proof that you could show new words and concepts to English-speaking audiences, and they would learn and appreciate them rather than changing the channel. Fans were dedicated enough to the source material that they were doing this shit themselves– literally making blurry VHS copies with their dubs and distributing them like mix-tapes. It created an underground fan culture of anime in the USA that became a substantive market for less tampered-with Japanese media, and I don’t know what the media landscape would look like today if that hadn’t happened.
Tumblr media
--Voice actors work with what they're given; sometimes, that’s limited to just what’s in the script of the day, and in the early years of American localization, it would probably NOT have included any background from an untranslated manga, or the original director’s notes, or from cultural inference that was lost on unfamiliar Western listeners at the time.  So they’d be left to their own devices when it came to choosing character voice and intonation and what to do with pauses and interjections, and they’d be doing it without the benefit of the original cultural framework or context from the adapted source material. Then of course, there is the ubiquitous challenge of ADR: matching syllables to lip-flaps and the timing of a given scene, which I can only imagine has improved with more modern software.
All this lead to some memorably wild and incongruous readings that today strain belief, are unintentionally humorous, or in worst cases, ruin a scene.
--This is the landscape we find ourselves in with early dubs. One's expectations must be modified to suit the medium and the times. It's all part of the challenge, the experience, the charm, the je-ne-sais-que of early dubs. It is the spice of life. Sometimes we all need a weird little background guy with a stupid voice to say the dumbest shit you ever heard. I find joy in this.
The English localization team on Gundam Wing was working with a very limited crew; almost everyone pulled double duty, and most “additional voices" are just the main actors wearing different hats. This led to some real big swings with the one-off character voices– because there are only so many ways to shout “IT’S A GUNDAM!”, and sometimes you gotta put some extra mustard on OZ Grunt #47 so you can tell him apart from OZ Grunt #46.
They were trying their very hardest to make it seem like there were more than twelve people inhabiting the universe, and the results… were mixed. But the effort was admirable.
My Humble Defense of the English Dub:
Tumblr media
Okay so listen-- I’m not gonna force anyone to listen to the English dub. Your mileage and tolerance for all of the dislocated strangeness and over-the-topness mentioned above may vary. And obviously, the original Japanese audio has artistic authenticity and charisma of its own.
-- SO ALL I’M GONNA SAY IS: if you tap out early, you’re gonna miss out on some of the rawest, coolest, emotionally pitch-perfect deliveries of all time.
Brian Drummond is absolutely heart-stopping as Zechs; it’s one of my favorite VA performances of all time. Enuka Okuma is by turns a chilling, ferocious, and sympathetic Lady Une. Mark Hildreth’s Heero Yuy conceals a depth of nuance and attention to detail beneath his superficial monotone. Kirby Morrow’s Trowa is a well of quiet empathy, his stoicism sometimes the vehicle for a tinder-dry sense of humor. Lisa Ann Beley as Relena runs the full dramatic range between naivety, to heartbreak, to conviction. Saffron Henderson’s Noin has a smoky sensuality that overlays her formidable competence, and moments of incredibly touching vulnerability. Michael Dobson’s cold eloquence as Duke Dremail brings the amount of aristocratic dignity and arrogance needed to lend legitimacy to the Romefeller Foundation and its terrifying power. And of course, Scott McNeil as Duo is utterly indispensable, a bright, bouncing point of contrast in a grim troupe, with the deftness of touch to deliver glimpses into the nihilism, the weary kindness, that his up-beat attitude belies.
I could continue to embarrass myself and go on this way about the whole cast. I love the English dub very much-- I also, truly, deeply, understand that it is wacky as hell. But I still believe it's worth grinning and bearing the NPCs and occasional dud lines to get to the good stuff. And sometimes, honestly, the good stuff IS the wacky stuff.
Side note: a fun game I like to play is Spot That Voice Actor! Take a drink every time you identify one of the main cast in a secret, secondary role! Take a drink every time you catch one of them putting some extra English on an unnamed character who dies immediately after they speak! Expire from alcohol poisoning by episode 20! Example: Did you know that Brian Drummond voiced both Zechs AND Doctor G? Now you know! And you can't unknow it! Ha ha! I've done this to you!

Been reading Superman vs Meshi, an adorable Manga in which Superman goes to Japan on his lunch breaks and enjoys some good food. Very standard manga about Japanese food but with a twist, the adorable Clark going in not really knowing much about Japan so even tho he's Superman he still gushes like a tourist
Anyways as wholesome as this is comic fans, being annoying, hate on it and go "why was this made?" because God forbid there's one (1) slice of life series in the hundreds of action comics. Like seriously I've seen people state that this is the worst thing ever and how this shows that manga/anime stuff is cringe and shouldn't dare touch their precious superhero comics and like, bro he is just eating some food chill out
I personally love this sort of cultural mix, I want a series where Goku falls in love with good old American comforts (or Mexican food for the fun of Mexicans loving Goku)
It's always these cute, lighthearted stories that get shit. I can guess why but let's not get too hung up on that.

death note rant
SPOILERS
manga: volume 11-12 and a little before
anime: after episode 25
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here’s the rant you’ve probably heard a million times already considering it’s 2022 and this was released back in like 2003.
i’m not new to the series, i’ve watched it multiple times, but this is the first time i’ve read the manga and oh my god. volumes 11-12 made me roll my eyes. near’s reasoning was supposed to be “based on logic and hard facts” kind of like L— though nothing like L. so when i say the ending in a bunch of horse 💩 it’s because it honestly is. light was written to be incredibly intelligent and intelligent enough to outsmart and kill L. we know near does not match L since it was stated by both light and near himself and that since light is above L, light is also above near. he “suspects” mikami just because he showed up twice to a show ?? what ?? that’s enough to make him kira’s accomplice?? literally thousands if not millions were doing that. there are so many other ways to implicate mikami and THATS the one they went with ?? because he was on a show with the same host twice and that’s enough to get close to kira ???? out of millions of people doing it ?? it was a show to talk about kira— a literal show that probably had more people on various occasions as well. then they suspect NOBODY else ? like what ??? literally grasping on straws. this is not a deduction they made, it was a deduction forced onto them by the writers. they’re not winning because they outsmarted light, they’re winning because the writers needed the spk to win.
along with that, light was written to be highly intelligent and that was shown time and time again throughout the anime and manga. but in the last few volumes, he became incompetent out of seemingly nowhere and was written— to be frank— as an idiot. which was completely unlike his character. and his character was built up and reinforced very strongly.
the issue isn’t that light lost. whether he won or not is not what i’m getting at. it’s the way it’s written that totally robs the story of an actual good ending.
like you’re telling me that this foreigner from america who is likely not japanese considering they set it up as a japanese vs american matter at some point, managed to write thousands of kanji in one day with the full precision and with the correct stroke order ? in a consistent size matching mikami’s? thousands and thousands of names ? with a writing system he is likely not as familiar with ? and that’s the reason light lost ??
even if he did know japanese, knowing japanese does not equate to knowing who knows how many kanji. the average japanese speaker knows around 2,000 kanji in order to be able to read lots of media. the death note had hundreds of pages filled entirely from bottom to top with names squeezed in so many could be filled. that’s likely well over 2,000 kanji and there’s no way a foreigner who likely does not have much experience with the language can be familiar with. and the stroke order. to put it into perspective, even if he did know the stroke order for every single kanji, he would still not be able to copy everything entirely even without taking breaks for food, water, rest, or a bathroom break. plus hand cramps !
sure, near got pictures of the pages before that day:
Tumblr media
but doing it all in ONE day ? specifically— overnight ?
nah that’s just lazy writing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then with the added detail that mikami regularly checked on the death notes for tampering ? with incredible precision ?
Tumblr media
you cannot tell me kira didn’t win.
ok i’ll add this too i hate near but it’s not really his fault. maybe in another life. sike. i still hate near.
anyways i still love matsuda even tho he’s the reason near didn’t die but whatever he’s super cute so he gets a pass
so that’s that this is really not a big deal whatsoever i’m gonna keep living my life 😭 i just wanted to voice my opinion

My Inuit Heritage
CW: Slur mention, mentions of sexual assault
I knew that I mentioned before that I didn't want to talk about my personal life on here, but I thought this was worth talking about.
I believe that I'm Inuit. The Europeans in my life could categorize me as a dark-skin European, and that's fine. That's why even now I subconsciously live in the 2000's, because Europeans wanted to have tan skin because they saw it as aesthetically appealing. I don't know everyone's personal story as to why they wanted their pale skin to be darker.
Tumblr media
Anyways, when I was younger, my father put on Ice Age. I was honestly more fixated on the humans' storyline than the silly wacky animals to entertain the stupid people, but it was always cleverly balanced and I appreciated it.
I feel like I'm more of my father's child than my mother's child. I always had a meat-focused diet: fish, meat. I became inspired to try to become a vegan by learning about diets in asian countries like Japan. Chinese food was a constant in my life as well. I also liked to be comfortable and cozy so I'm obsessed with the clothes i see some inuits wear in Google images. I like Icelandic patterns. My father also liked to wear sweaters. I had a fixation of hot chocolate because our house was always cold but my father felt most comfortable with the temperature, he always drank tea.
Tumblr media
I don't mean to trigger anyone, but in my elementary school, there was a traditional Halloween costume parade around the block where every student would wear their costume proudly and all the parents would take pictures to remember their child with their friends representing or being whatever they'd like.
I got a light pink eskimo costume. I immediately felt comfortable and secure wearing it. The material was very soft and comfortable. I felt like everything was right and it clicked in my soul like a key. Even the boys called me cute for the costume. My entire life I wanted to be Japanese or Chinese, but remembering how I felt in that soft costume made me realize that there is a reality for me that's even better than maybe those two existences: being a proud Inuit.
I saw a article somewhere that tried to say that the word "eskimo" is considered a slur towards Inuit people. i believed it immediately because I was a bit younger than I am now. I was shocked because I heard the term "eskimo kisses" and my mother used to do them to me when I was younger. That was my favorite way of showing affection. My partner told me to not worry about it but I still internalized that belief, because I only identified as black at that time (mainly due to my appearance and the culture that surrounded me during those days) and I was disassociated from my awareness of me being a indigenous myself until my father told me.
He told me that he was Native American along with other things. When I met actual Native Americans, it was really hard to find or have any slight of connection, we both felt uncomfortable and distant, and even scared of each other.
I found myself having a gravity towards European things ever since I was a little girl. So that's probably why I lean towards the Nurture in the Nature vs. Nurture argument. I can write a whole paper on this sometime..
My art therapist was wearing a pattern that reminded me of Native American patterns. I inquired about it and she actually told me it was a Eastern European pattern. Another click. I can't really consider myself biracial because my skin tone is not exactly the palest and I represent three races. I always thought things would only resonate with you if there is something inside of you that is compatible with it, because there's tons of other cultures and aspects of it I have never and probably never will be in touch or witness. So yeah. I represent a lot of different cultures, but I'd hate for someone to make me feel insecure about it. I worked hard to feel secure and grounded about myself, and I am proud.
Maybe the bottom line is this. Black people who do not feel comfortable in the black community and find theirselves genuinely gravitating to White/European things should try identifying as Inuit. I felt immediately understood when I shared to my friends that I was a american Inuit. Everything made sense to me now. I don't want to disturb anyone who lives in the artic.
I feel like the term African-American was written to help people who came from African countries and were born there to have a identity and see it as a nationality. I was born in America and so were my two parents. None of us came from Africa, and this is my first generation family. I have been mistreated horribly ever since I even slightly considered interacting with individuals in said black community. My dad has forced me to fit in with these individuals and I almost died several times, both spiritually and physically. I was sexually assaulted several times, and other awful things I don't want to remember. I always felt safer in different communities even if my family considers my plight for comfort and safety as silly. So I'm trying to spread awareness of the inuit community.
Thank you for reading. I hope one day you too will find yourself

Discovered that the 1955 movie adaptation of Chesley Bonestell’s book “Conquest of Space” is on Amazon Prime.
It seems more “real” than most other pre-Mir space movies because of how minimalist and claustrophobic the sets are. Acting is very stiff, stageplay-like. It’s a weird contrast.
Tumblr media
Miniature effects haven’t held up as well as those in, say, Forbidden Planet or War of the Worlds, but then those movies were a lot less ambitious.
Tumblr media
(cinematic parallels)
Tumblr media
I wanna try those food pills ngl
Tumblr media
Weird that the Japanese astronaut has the “Rising Sun” flag on his locker. Maybe that variant was perceived as more recognizable to Americans in the 50s?
Tumblr media
Also, the Swedish guy has a flag with a jagged edge like a pennant, so there’s a lot of vexillogocal weirdness.
Tumblr media
Wait, I thought I was mishearing, was the Japanese guy really named Dr. Imouto?
lmao, the big spaceship still has a sparkler for its exhaust like in the 1940s Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials.
Tumblr media
Ooh they’re getting topical, talking about the Bible.
“Is it right for us to go into space when we’ve been given the Earth?” Vs. “The universe was put here for Man to conquer.” Which of those is the conservative and which is the liberal position have completely inverted since this movie came out.
I’ve heard that the plot about a religious fanatic trying to sabotage the mission already felt dated in 1955. I wonder how much of that was because of a propaganda campaign to get Americans on board with the Space Race, “It’s not blasphemy if it’s to beat those godless commies!”
Dang, nobody had any idea what an asteroid looked like up close back then.
Tumblr media
The space funeral is still pretty haunting. It would be darn creepy to look out the window and see your friend’s corpse just hanging there like a ghost.
They got how Mars looks almost right. Kudos on that. Guess it was a lot easier to see with telescopes of the time.
Tumblr media
They portray Mars as having a blue sky and it being safe to take the gloves of your spacesuit off. Before Mariner showed how thin Mars’s atmosphere is, before Viking showed how toxic the dirt is.
Tumblr media
Why’d they even bring a gun on this trip? Is there not enough explosive stuff on a spaceship already?
Tumblr media
Like, yeah, some real astronauts carried guns, but that was as likely to be a hunting rifle or shotgun for foraging if they went off course than a pistol. I'd assume the mission to Mars would be a bit better observed to avoid landing in Soviet Siberia or something. I guess it still makes more sense than, say, the Soyuz crew in Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter's "Time Odyssey" having a gun. Like, I wouldn't think you need to worry about accidentally landing in hostile territory as much when you've got both American and Russian astronauts aboard.
Aww, they got a white Christmas on Mars. :3 Unclear why the rocket needs to be perfectly vertical for them to take off. Doesn't seem like a “The Martian” situation where they’re afraid of tipping over. Listen, I’ve played Kerbal Space Program, you can just adjust your flight angle after blastoff! Is the mission so perfectly calibrated that they don’t have the ability to steer at all?
