Artist Alley at FAN EXPO Philadelphia takes a “super” leap forward as a “who’s who” of creative talent including boldface names like Joe Quesada (former CCO, Marvel Entertainment), Jim Shooter (“Marvel Comics Secret Wars”, former Editor-in-Chief, Marvel Comics), Dan Slott (“Spider-Man,” “Fantastic Four”), Frank Cho (“Spider-Man,” “The Mighty Avengers”), J.G. Jones (“Wanted,” “Black Widow”), Tony Harris (“Starman,” “Star Wars”), Tim Jacobus (“Goosebumps”), Mike Hawthorne (“Batman”, “Deadpool”) and dozens of others have been announced. Every comics franchise imaginable will be represented by numerous artists and writers at the event, set for June 2-4 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, alongside top local and national talent responsible for independent titles across a diverse spectrum of fandoms.

QUICK NOTE TUMBLR WERNT LETTING ME UPLOAD THIS SO I BASICALLY HAD TO TAKE THE PARAGRAPHS OUT AND ITS ONE LONG PEICE OF TEXT WHICH I HATE.
You wake up to see you boyfriend of 3 years looking at you.“Why you watching me sleep" you mumble with a chuckle snuggling further into the duvet.
“Just admiring beauty in its purest form" he replied running a hand through your hair.
“Cringe” you giggle completely ruining the moment Joe was trying to have. You hear him shuffle around and his weigh leaving the bed, his heavy footsteps walking away until he stop. He rips the covers of you body and exposes you to the cold winter morning and sunlight shining in your eyes.
“Oi" you groan and glance at the smirking Joe at the end of the bed.
“Come on get up I want you to join me today" he says walking of to the bathroom leaving you questioning what he's wanting you to do. Sighing you get up and walk to the bathroom not caring that Joe was in there already. You were both so comfortable with each other it doesn't faze you seeing each other naked or at your worse. He was cleaning his teeth watching you in the mirror as you take off you warm pj’s and get in the shower.“Do you need help warming up or cleaning babe?” Joe asks and you could tell he was smirking while asking you. You know you could try and tell him no but it always ends up in him joining you anyway. “You better not have cold hands" you say giving him the invitation to join you.
A little while later you're both ready and eating some breakfast which actually meant you eat some toast and joe having a protein shake. “what do you want me to do with you today" you question Joe.
“Thats for me to know and you to find out" he sassily replys. “We're not going out till it's dark though so you have the day to mentally prepare yourself" he adds putting emphasis on mentally. “JOE WELLER. you listen to me i'm only going to say this once. I. Am. Not. Going. To. A. Abandoned. Building. With. You.” you says pointing at him as you move around the counter you two were eating your breakfast at. You stare at him dead in the eye and a straight face. A smirk grows in his face and he lets out a chuckle. “your so cute babe" he says giving you a kiss on the head and walking to the living room. “Im being serious" you shout through to him. “Whatever you say" he shout back in a sing song tone.
You huff and clean the kitchen up thinking of how to get out of going to a abandoned building. All day you were trying to get out of it. You ignored him which ended up in him tickling you and giving up with that. You make him a really nice lunch which doesn't work. Pretend to being ill but ‘the ghosts aren't going to catch your fake cold’. So when the clock struck 6 you knew you only had one chance, so you ran upstairs and went into your underwear draw and get the set that was at the bottom. You pull on the black and red lingerie and place you dressing gown over the top. You walk downstairs and into the lounge stopping in front of joe who's on his phone. You place a hand on his knee and take the phone out of his hand placing it on the sofa. Joe has the perfect view down you dressing gown and look into your eyes.
“Babe I know what you're trying to do and I really like it. Your sexy body isn't going to get you out of this. If you want to fit a quick one in we have 15 minutes until Elliot gets here” he says giving you a kiss on your lips. You sigh and leave to go get changed. “Leave the underwear on babe never know the ghosts may like it as much as I do" he shouts up the stairs. You roll you eyes and change into some leggings and one of joe's jumpers to keep you warm out in the cold. You and Joe wait for Elliott to arrive and get all of the equipment ready. Flashlights, gopro's, cameras and box which they smuggled in the bag when you ‘wasn't looking’, you all grabbed the 3 backpack and shoved them into the car. You pull on your trainers, wooly hat and gloves and prepare yourself for night you're going to experience. You drive for about 45 minutes through some sketchy areas and woods before arriving to a long driveway. Once the cars parked so it's kinda hidden but also available for an easy escape Joe turns the camera on and starts the video.
“Hullo, it's Joe, Elliott and (y/n) reporting to you from the famous haunted mental asylum" he starts and you sit in the back looking around. He starts talking about the history but before he turns of the camera he shoves it in your face.
“You good (Y/n)?” joe asks. You give him a glare behind the camera and look into the camera. “I was brought here without my permission. And if I die and the police find this then you will know how I didn't want to do this" you say. You all climb out the car and you instantly grab onto Joe's arm. “Calm down (y/n)” he says almost as if it would calm the 100 thoughts running through you mind. You tut and let go of his arm. “Don't worry  (y/n) i'll save you from the ghosts" Elliot says throwing an arm around your shoulder and winking at the camera. You giggle and see the jealousy rise in Joe's eyes and his body tense due to you being in someone's arms that aren't his. Although it was only a joke with Elliot he grabs your hand and pulls you to him and starts talking to the camera. You shine your torch ahead an start to see the roof and chimneys through the trees. “Ahh" you hear a high pitch scream making you and Joe stop in your tracks and look around to see Elliot in a fight with a bush that managed to scratch him. You and joe erupt into laughter and help Elliot out the bush. Once making it to the clearing you all stand glancing at the almost mansion sized building in front of you. “Guys we have made it to the famous mental asylum and hopefully (y/n) won't go anymore mental" Joe says almost crouching as he speaks to them, but that doesn't stop you giving him a slight slap on his arm. “You deserved that bro" Elliot chuckles filming on the second camera catching the moment that just happened.
“Right boys and girls,” Joe begins before being interrupted when a sound of a rock of something get thrown. “What was that then" he asks looking out to the distance. He starts walking toward where the sound came from.
“Woah Joe are you mad. Why are you going over there it could be someone trying to hit us” you warn grabbing Joe to stop him going.
“believe it or not (y/n) that is the only entrance over there” joe explains pointing to a broken dirty white door. You sigh and make sure Elliot is still with you before walking over to the door. When you arrive at the door there's shattered glass and broken wood surrounding the building. Taking a glance inside you follow after Joe then Elliot climbs through after you. “Alright I know exactly where we need to go. But I want to tell all you sexy spirits that we aren't here to hurt you as long as dont try it on with my girlfriend. She has some checky lingerie on and that's for my eyes only" joe shouts into the mental asylum. “JOE-" You try to shout at him to be cut off by Elliot placing his hand over you mouth hushing you. Starting to lash out and panic you hit him by accident making him let go. “jesus (y/n) I didn't want you to shout I heard something.” After multiple apologises we walked a little further into the building to what seemed like a hall.
“look the wheelie bin is still here" Elliot exclaimed running over to the bin. I take the camera of Joe and he goes over climbing in. They play around with it for a while before getting bored and we venture upstairs. When you reach the top stairs you hear a loud smash. “What was that" you whisper and the boys shake their head looking at you showing that they have no clue just like you.
“If there is anyone here please we're not gonna hurt you so please don't hurt us” you shout getting a sudden burst of confidence. When you hear no replys you look at the boys who decide to carry on to the room they wanted to show you the most. They stand by the door and gesture you to open it. “Are you crazy?” you ask almost laughing in disbelief.
“come one (y/n) what are you scared of” Joe asks getting closer to your face.
“Jesus Joe stop messing around” you huff reaching for the door handle and then kicking the door open. A creak echoes through the building followed by a bang as the door hits the wall. “calm down (y/n) the building falling apart as it is. Don't need your help.” Elliot says walking into the room to the table which happened to be the only piece of furniture. You and joe follow taking the backpacks off and placing them on the floor. Meanwhile Elliot places his on the table and takes out the box. You instantly recognize it from a previous video and instructed joe strongly not to bring it into the house. “why do you have a Ouija board? Joe have you been keeping this in the same house as me? Were not doing this!” you ramble on getting frustrated and panicking. Joe comes round the table and puts his hands on your shoulders. “Don't worry Elliots kept it has his house and nothing's going to happen to you as long as we say goodbye. I promise" he says staring into your eyes. You start to calm slightly and look over the now set board. Taking deep breaths you consider if you're going to do this or not. You look up and both the boys are looking at you. “You don't have to do it if you don't want to" joe say in a soft tone. Slowly you lift your shaky hand and place two fingers in the pointer. The boys follow and joe open the session. “Can I ask the first question?” you ask the boys. Nodding it pushes you to go on. “Are you going to hurt us?” you question kind of hoping you don't receive a reply. Slowly your hands are glided to yes and you start to freak before it starts to move again to no. “Do you want us to leave?” Joe asks and it moves to yes. “Then we will leave but first tell us your name" you look up at him and didn't realise a name was being spelt out before you. E. M. I. L. Y. “How old are you?” You ask not registering what you saying. 2. 2. It replies. You feel a weight being put on your shoulders after the numbers come through. “Am I feeling your sadness" at this point the boys are looking and watching your every move amazed at the event unfolding. It moves to yes and you get the strong urge to say goodbye. D.A.N.G.E.R was spelt out and all 3 of you instantly say good bye to emily.  “You okay" Joe asks wrapping an arm around you as you 3 start to walk out the room.  “Erm guys I dont wanna ruin your moment but i think you should look at this” Elliot says from across the hall where he was taking clip for the video. You walk into the room probably not very bigger than the one you and joe shared at home. Looking around you could tell a girl probably stayed in her. You walk to elliot and find him holding a photograph. He hands it over, there stands a tall girl her hair flowing down to her chest , wearing a knee length flowing skirt. She looked like she in her late teens standing next to a woman you start to recognise.
“(y/n) is it me or does that look like your mum" joe points out your thought looking over your shoulder at the picture.  “I think you should turn it over" Elliot suggest. Flipping over the thin piece of paper their wrote “sum 2010. Em & mum"

From the start you had always been anxious about JJ doing boxing. Since it was JJ he put a lot of work into it and became very good. And of course you didn't even doubt that he'll beat Joe Weller. But even considering that, there was something in you that was always worried.
So here you were. Worried about him, again. You forced yourself to fully believe that he'll win, because you couldn't imagine what would happen if he lost to Logan.
Before the night you and the boys decided to go to a party before the big fight day. The others had noticed your worry and hoped that a few drinks and some fun would cheer you up. To be honest it had been ages since you've gone to a party without JJ. He had been quite protective from day one. Eventhough he knew that you could look after yourself, he still found himself always worrying if you were okay and well.
As the black car drove to the destination you sat on the backseat, playing with the hem of your statin mini dress and scolding yourself for being worked up. But soon you were snapped out of your trance. "You okay?" Harry asked you with a concerned expression on his face.
"Yeah, just a little nervous about tomorrow" you chuckled at the boy next to you, trying reassure him. "He'll beat his ass, don't worry" Simon said from the frontseat and you smiled, "I hope you're right Minter".
"We're here" Harry mumbled and you stepped out of the car, only to be met with unwanted cameras. At first you and the guys somehow rushed passed them, but after some time when you went to grab a few drinks they found you again. The paparazzi started asking questions about the fight, who do you think will win and some other overasked questions. You were answering their questions while masking your annoyance with a slight smile untill you heard one of the interviews say, "Jake! Any interesting opinions about the upcoming fight?". After tracing the interviewer's eyes to your right you were suprised to find Jake Paul coming closer to you.
You and Jake had a light history, if you can even call it that. Jake was once asked who was his youtuber celebrity crush and he had answered you. At the time you had a decent sized channel that had just reached 4 million subscribers, but it was still odd to many. Your friends found it really funny though and joked about it quite often. But you thought he was just a douche. So when Ethan joked about it in a sidemen video, you didn't hold back and gave your honest opinion on the spoiled brat. Of course Jake wasn't happy after that and went straight into 'i never liked you anyways you ugly whore' mode. But his hateful comments didn't really bother you since you didn't watch him nor cared about him.
He stepped right next to you and flashed a cocky grin to the cameras. "Well, you all know what I think. I think you should ask KSI's girlfriend that". Your eyes were looking for the others in the crowd, but you couldn't find them. As you didn't know what to say next, anxiety was rising in you. JJ and you were complicated at the moment, there wasn't any relationship confirmed between the two of you or on social media.
"I'm sorry, but I should go and look for the others now" you forced a smile, trying to get out of the situation because you felt as if you'll regret not doing it later. "Come on, Y/N. Don't act like it's a secret that the two of you are fucking" Jake laughed and grabbed your shoulder to prevent you from leaving. You looked into his crazed eyes and realized that he was heavily drunk. But the interviewers were eating up his non-filtered speech, knowing this will get them lots of clicks and views.
"Or does he just use you as a easy fuck. Is that why it hurts to be called his girlfriend?" Trying to get under your skin he moved even closer to you. 'Has he really forgotten that we're being filmed right now?' You thought to yourself. "Just because you treat women like shit doesn't mean that everyone does" you snapped back at him with a stern tone.
As Jake moved back from you his cocky grin turned into angry frown. Suddenly you spotted Josh in the distance and ran to him without any other words to the interviewers. "Gosh, we were looking for you anywhere" Josh said with a face of concern that was fading into slight relief. "Are you alright?" He gently touched your shoulder. Josh always noticed when you got overwhelmed and this time wasn't any different. "Um, just a little overwhelming, but, yeah, it's alright" you answered. "Fuck this place, let's get you back in the car" he started leading you to the car.
"He said what ?!" Tobi's eyes shot wide after you told the guys about what had just happened. "Fucking cunt" Ethan cursed and you just nodded at him as a response. "JJ is not gonna be happy about this" Vik sighed, making Harry let out a sarcastic chuckle, "Yeah, no shit".
The guys were frustrated and you weren't suprised, knowing their protective nature towards you. "I think I'm gonna go and head to sleep now. Good night guys!" You said and started heading to your room. The guys wished you 'good night' and continued talking, but Tobi decided to follow you.
When you were just about to open your door you heard a "Wait" and turned around to see Tobi speedwalking towards you. The man stopped in front of you and opened his mouth to say something, but suddenly nothing came out. Tobi somewhat knew what he wanted to say, yet he didn't know how to word it. "Yeah, he hit a little close home, but I've heard worse from jerks like him" you chuckled to ease your friends concerns.
"Didn't even doubt it from you" Tobi snickered and put a hand on your shoulder. "But...If Jide comes, what do I tell him?" He asked with doubt lacing his voice. "Nahhh, he won't come, he needs to focus on boxing and stuff. But you don't have to worry about it Tobi." you smiled, however Tobi disagreed. "He'll come" he giggled and you did the same, knowing he's right.
You layed on your comfortable hotel bed and relaxed your mind. As your mind was drifting to dreamland you heard knocks on the door. You opened the door and there he was. He shouldn't be here right now and he looked tired, but you were more than happy to see him. JJ stepped in and gave you a slight, yet genuine smile.
There was no escape now. You had to address the topic that you'd been avoiding for a long time. JJ and you loved, acted and fucked as if the two of you were dating, yet it was never actually made official. You hated this, but you you knew that the both of you deserved to know if you guys were lovers, were you just fucking JJ or was it the other way around.
"You look tired" you mumbled, having no idea what to say. "The thing he said. It's not true you know", he ignored your claim. "Nothing he says is" you tried to make the mood a little lighter and earned a little chuckled from the man standing across from you. "But it can always be the other way around." JJ said in unexpectedly vulnerable words and tone. "Well, it's not like that right now", you forced a slight smile.
JJ pursed his lip and took a deep breath, "I love you, I really do. I know we aren't really a thing...,but I-I want you to know that. Shit, umm. I mean, I was thinking if you would like, want to be a something?" He stuttered with uncertainty. You looked into his dark eyes and felt them mirror yours. At that moment you realized that you weren't the only one who had been staying up late, wondering what they're really feeling and crying because the fear of their own emotions is too much.
The tears forming in his eyes reassured you that he was dead serious about this. Yet you had no idea what to do. You loved him and he certainly loved you, but that made this all even harder. The thought of a relationship ruining the pure love was too realistic and happened too often.
A salty tear dropped down your cheek as you felt the emotions inside you burst. You wanted to say that you love him out loud, but that meant a relationship. So how were the 4 words gonna drop from your tongue if the word 'commitment' alone sent chills down your spine.
Silence had dominated the conversation as the both of you stood in the little hallway of your hotel room. But soon enough JJ let out a sigh of relief as you nodded. "I love you too", you said and didn't waste anymore time before locking your lips with his.
When you pulled away, the both of you had the widest smiles on your faces. "I'm still gonna fuck Jake up for that though", JJ giggled. "I'm sure you will" you whispered under your breath and kissed him again.

Having some thoughts about the references and inspirations used for the Bad Batch’s designs.
So Boba Fett is my absolute favorite character and Temeura Morrison was perfect casting. I went to see the 2008 TCW movie in theaters because I was so excited to see him again, even if he was animated. You can imagine my disappointment. Whoever was on screen was not Temeura Morrison. You could sort of see a resemblance if you squinted and didn’t think too hard about it. They replaced Temeura with Racially Ambiguous G.I. Joe. If I didn’t know better and someone told me the animated clones are space Italians from the moon of New Jersey I would buy it. One Million Brothers Pizzeria and Italian Bistro. Not that there’s something wrong with being space Italian, I just don’t think it’s the right choice for the Fetts. The design got slightly improved by season 7 but it still bugs the hell out of me.

I did eventually get into the show later and (of course) got invested in the clones. Unfortunately, they were largely sidelined by the Jedi storylines. Out of the two new main characters created for TCW, Ahsoka definitely got more development and focus than Rex. When they announced The Bad Batch, I was excited to see a show specifically devoted to the clones… at least that’s what it said on the tin. We have all seen what lurks beneath those stylish helmets.
Jango Fett, you are NOT the father.
So who is?
Based on interviews with Filoni, it sounds like the Bad Batch was a George Lucas idea. And like all his ideas, it’s super derivative. The original trilogy directly lifted elements from sci fi serials, westerns, and samurai movies, more specifically Kurosawa films like The Hidden Fortress. For The Bad Batch character designs, the influence is obviously American action and adventure movies.
Now let’s get specific. Bad Batch, who’s your daddy?

Sylvester Stallone as Rambo in First Blood 1982. That bandana has become an integral part of the iconic action hero look. You see a character wearing one and it’s a visual shorthand for either “this character is a tough guy” like Billy played by Sonny Landham in Predator 1987, or “this character thinks he is/wants to be a tough guy” like Brand played by Josh Brolin in The Goonies 1985 or Edward Frog played by Corey Feldman in The Lost Boys 1987.

Hunter’s model is closest to the original clone base. If you look closely you will see the eyebrows are straighter with a much lower angle to the arch. His nose is also not the same shape as a standard clone like Rex, including a narrower bridge. It’s certainly not Temeura Morrison’s nose. Remember what I said about space Italians? It didn’t take much to push the existing clone design to resemble an specific Italian man instead of a specific Māori man. The 23&Me came back, and Hunter inherited more than the bandana from Sylvester.

The long narrow nose, the sharp cheekbones, the scowl. That’s no clone, that’s just animated Clint Eastwood. Not even Young and Hot Clint Eastwood from Rawhide 1959-1965. With that hair, I’m talking Gran Torino 2008. The man of few words schtick and family friendly toothpick in lieu of cigar are pure Eastwood as The Man With No Name from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns A Fist Full of Dollars 1964, For a Few Dollars More 1965, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly 1966.
In a way, this is full circle because the actor Jeremy Bulloch took inspiration from Clint Eastwood for his performance as Boba Fett in ESB.
Wrecker

In an interview Filoni lists the Hulk as an (obvious) inspiration for Wrecker. Ever seen the old Hulk tv show from 1978? Well take a look at the actor who played him, Lou Ferrigno. Would you look at that. Even has his papa’s nose.
You could make the argument that Wrecker was influenced by The Rock, an appropriately buff ‘n bald Polynesian (Samoan, not Maori) man. But look at him next his Fast and Furious costar Vin Diesel and tell me which one resembles Wrecker’s character model more.

Tech is a little trickier for me to place. If he has a more direct inspiration it must be something I haven’t seen. That said, his hairline is very Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard 1988. His quippiness and large glasses remind me of Shane Black as Hawkins from Predator 1987. In terms of his face, he looks a but like the result of McClane and Hawkins deciding to settle down and start a family. Although, Tech’s biggest contributors are probably just everyone on TV Trope’s list for Smart People Wear Glasses.
And finally,

Oh Echo. Considering he wasn’t created for the Bad Batch, he probably wasn’t based on a particular character or movie. But if I had to guess, his situation and appearance remind me a lot of Alex Murphy played by Peter Weller in Robocop 1987. However, Robocop explored the Man or Machine Identity Crisis with more nuance, depth, and dignity. Yikes.
The exact tropes and references used in The Bad Batch have been done successfully with characters who aren’t even human. Gizmo from Gremlins 2: The New Batch 1990 had a brief stint with the Rambo bandana. I could have picked any number of characters for Defining Feature Is Glasses but here is the most cursed version of Simon of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Suffer as I have. Marc Antony with his beloved Pussyfoot from Looney Tunes has the same tough guy with a soft center vibe as Wrecker and his Lula (also a kind of cat). Hell, in the same show we have Cad Bane sharing Cowboy Clint Eastwood with Crosshair. I actually think Bane makes a better Eastwood which is wild considering Crosshair has Eastwood’s entire face and Bane is blue.

So we’ve established you don’t need your characters to look exactly like their inspirations to match their vibe. So why go through the trouble and cost of creating completely new character designs instead of recycling and altering assets they already had on hand? Just slap on a bandana, toothpick, goggles, and make Wrecker bigger than the others while he does a Hulk pose and you’re done. Based on the general reaction to Howzer it would have been a low effort slam dunk crowd pleaser.
But they didn’t do that.
So here’s the thing. I like the tropes used in The Bad Batch. I am a fan of action adventure movies from the 80s-90s, the sillier the better. I am part of the Bad Batch’s target audience. Considering what I know about Disney and Lucasfilm, I went in with low expectations. I genuinely don’t hate the idea of seeing references to these actors and media in The Bad Batch. I don’t think basing these characters on tropes was a bad idea. If anything it’s a solid starting point for building the characters.
The trouble is nothing got built on the foundation. The plot is directionless, the pacing is wacky, and the characters have nearly no emotional depth or defining character arcs. They just sort of exist without reacting much while the story happens around them. But I can excuse all of that. You don’t stay a fan of Star Wars as long as I have not being able to cherrypick and fill in the gaps. This show has a deeper issue that shouldn’t be ignored.
Why do the animated clones bear at best only a passing resemblance to their live action actor? In interviews, Filoni wouldn’t shut up but the technological advancements in the animation for season 7. So if they are updating things, why not try to make the clones a closer match to their source material? Why did they have to look like completely different people in The Bad Batch to be “unique”? Looking like Temeura Morrison would have no bearing on their special abilities and TCW proved you can have identical looking characters and still have them be distinct. In fact, that’s a powerful theme and the source of tragedy for the clones’ narrative overall.
Here’s Filoni’s early concept art of Crosshair, Wrecker, Tech, and Hunter. (Interesting but irrelevant: Wrecker seems to have a cog tattoo similar to Jesse’s instead of a scar. Wouldn’t it have been funny if they kept that so when they met in season 7 one if them could say something like “Hey we’re twins!” That’s a little clone humor. Just for you guys 😘)

None of these drawings look like the clones in TCW, much less Temeura Morrison. Let’s be generous. Maybe Filoni struggles with drawing a real person’s likeness, as many people do. But he had to hand this off to other artists down the line whose job specifically involves making a stylized character resemble their actor. Yet the final designs missed the mark almost as much as this initial concept. Starting to seem as if the clones looking more like Temeura Morrison was never even on the table. It wasn’t a lack of creativity, skill or technical limitations on the part of the creative team. I don’t think there is an innocent explanation. They went out of their way to make the final product exactly how we got it.
This goes beyond homage. They could have made the same pop culture references and character tropes without completely stripping Temeura Morrison from the role he originated. It was a very purposeful choice to replace him with more immediately familiar actors from established franchises and films. It wouldn’t shock me if Filoni, Lucas, and anyone else calling the shots didn’t even think hard or care enough about the decision to immediately recognize a problem. And I don’t think they believed anyone else would either. At least no one whose opinion they cared about. Those faces are comfortingly familiar and proven bankable. They are what we’re all used to seeing after all. They’re white.
Lack of imagination, bad intentions, or simple ignorance doesn’t really matter in the end. The result is the same. Call it what it is. They replaced a man of color with a bunch of white guys. That’s by the book garden variety run of the mill whitewashing. There’s no debate worth having about it. For a fanbase that loves to nitpick things like whether or not it’s in character for Han to shoot first or Jeans Guy in the Mandalorian, we sure are quick to find excuses for clones who look nothing like their template. Why is that? If you don’t see the problem, congratulations. Your ass is showing. Pull your jeans up.

[REQUEST] Oli White - He Meets You For The First Time
"Oii, Americano!" You hear from somewhere behind you, your cheeks instantly start to heat up as multiple people around you are looing around to see where it came from.
You never needed to see Joe Sugg to know that he was close.
"Y/N!" he yells again, this time you give in and spin around, about ten metres away is a grinning Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee. You, a fellow YouTuber, had met both of the boys in your home country - America - while at Vidcon. Despite only being with them for such a short amount of time, the three of you clicked and you had daily messaged each other and planned for you to come to Britain for a visit.
"Hey boys" you grin unable to keep a straight face when they were both projecting a smile, they hurry towards you and both scoop you up in a massive hug
"We've missed you Y/N!" Caspar exclaims producing a take-out coffee cup
"Tea?!" you smirk as he hands it too you
It was a running joke between the three of you that America didn't know how to make a 'cup of tea' like the Brits did, you always argued this so they both promised that when you came to stay with them the first thing you would do would be to have a cup of 'good ole English tea'.
You take a sip as both the boys watch you in anticipation, they smirk knowingly when your eyes widen... What. The. Heck
"That's so good, you're right! American tea sucks" I grimace at the thought of what I used to think was good
"We knew it" Caspar nods
"Told you" Joe adds looking extremely proud of himself
"Anyway, whats on the agenda for today?" you ask, silently begging them to change the topic, you had been so ademant that you either wouldn't taste the difference or you would think American tea would be better, you hated being proven wrong!
"Oh yes!" Joe says thinking about what we were going to be doing as he starts to drag your case alone
"We are filming with Oli in about an hour, we hope you don't mind but it needs to be done, then after that we can do anything you want to do" Caspar smiles apologetically as he swings your large carry-on bag onto his back leaving you empty handed.
"Oh, that's fine. It'll be nice to meet him finally. Hopefully I won't leave Britain with some sort of virus though" you giggle thinking about Vidcon when you, Joe and Caspar had met, Oli had meant to be there but at the last minute he had been strook down by some mysterious illness and couldn't go.

You arrived back at Joe's flat where you would be staying over your stay, you had chilled out while Joe and Caspar had set up the lights for their video. They were busy arguing about how the camera set up should be that they didn't hear the alarm that someone was requesting to come into the building.
With a playful huff, you slid off of the couch and from your comfortable position to walk to the telephone that had a camera on it to see who was outside, you noticed Oli from his videos that you had always watched.
"Come on up Oli" you grin even though you remember he cant see you "I'm not really sure which button I press" you murmur but from the chuckle that Oli gives, you know he has heard you
"Type into the keypad, 268 then the hash button, it's his apartment number and it should open the door for me" Oli explains so you do as he asks and a click sound confirms it has worked
"See you soon Y/N!" Oli shouts as he disappears out of view

You unlock the door and wait by it to meet who Oli whose face lights up with a big smile, there was no doubt in your mind that Oli was extremely attractive - Caspar and Joe were more the annoying, protective brothers but you loved them so it was fine but Oli was different. You could feel your cheeks heating up like Oli could hear all of your thoughts.
As you walking back into the living room with Oli, Joe and Caspar turn around looking shocked
"When did you get here?" they question Oli

Since Oli had arrived all the boys has been acting strange, they had been having secretive chats in the corner of the room and then they kept trying to tell me all these positive things about Oli.
They finally sit down to film, you are paying a small amount of attention but you didn't want to disturb their filming so you sit across the room on your phone trying to stay out of trouble
"Did you hear that Y/N?" Joe shouts over, you lift your head up
"Huh?" you ask shaking your head
"We were just saying how Oli is now a man" Joe says with a wink that looks like I should know something that I don't
"Guys..." Oli sighs while blushing
"Yeah I mean look at all this chin hair" Caspar grins as both the boys on either side of Oli use a finger to rub under his chin making you laugh while Oli just looks bewildered.
"Wha'dya say Y/N, go on a date with our manly man Oli White" Joe winks again while its your turn to blush
"So the secretiveness was you two trying to get me and Oli to go on a date together?" you giggle
"You noticed that? We were trying to be discrete!" Caspar sighs
"About as discrete as a bull in a china shop Caspar" you laugh again while Oli sits in the middle of them, very quiet and very embarrassed.
"Of course I'll go on a date with you Oli" you smile while he whips his head up as if he is hearing me wrong but you nod to confirm that yes, he did hear right
You were going on a date with Oli White.

Happy Holidays Everyone! I started making these yearly playlists in 2001 as an attempt to connect with friends in the wake of 911. It was just before the dawn of ITunes, and way before social media. We were not in touch like we are today. I burned dozens of individual cd’s one at a time, printed up customized jewel case covers and snail mailed them all out. It was an annual month-long labor of love. Over the past few years, streaming music has made it much easier and faster to compile and distribute, and frankly much more fun. I still look forward to putting the playlist and blog together and sharing it with all of you. Particularly this year as it gives me a chance to connect with so many friends I haven’t seen in quite some time. It was a tremendously challenging year for all of us. I was grateful to have had my family here in LA the entire time, we remain healthy and well. The west coast Herzogs know just how lucky we have been. The next year will not be without its own challenges, but I'm hopeful we are able to move past this pandemic and the exhausting events of the past 4. More than that, I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in 2021. Until then, be safe, be well, and be good to one another. Enjoy the music.

Khruangbin - Time (You And I) Don’t ask me to pronounce the name of this eclectic trio from Texas, but this dubby disco tune had me returning to its chilled out groove often during the last few decidedly “un-chill” months. Dreamy and funky, the groove takes me back to NYC’s early 80′s club scene and Ze Records releases from the likes of Kid Creole and Coati Mundi.

Bill Withers (1938-2020)- Use Me The legendary Bill Withers left the playing field at the top of his game in the early 80′s, hardly heard from again. And while he didn't pass from Covid, his healing pop hymn Lean On Me seemed to be everywhere as people found music to help them cope with the challenges of the pandemic. Withers left behind a legendary and enduring group of hit songs that moved easily from soul to folk to pop, not to mention the subtle rolling funk of this one.

Black Pumas- Fire Strong debut from an unlikely Austin duo that garnerd both buzz and grammy nods. The critics are calling it “psychedelic soul”. Not quite sure that nails it, but like the artists coming up next, they’re carving out new ground while drawing inspiration from classic sources.

Low Cut Connie_ Private Lives Philly’s Low Cut Connie are back at it with a double album that plays like the soundtrack to a boozy night at your favorite bar. Sweaty, funky and not a little bit messy. If Peter Wolf and Bruce had a kid it would be this blue eyed soul boy. Adam Weiner grew up in the shadow of the Jersey shore and can't help but have a bit of that E Street hustle.

Willie Nile- New York at Night One of New York’s beloved adopted  son’s dropped this love letter right into the jaws of a battered metropolis driven to its knees by the pandemic. It was heartbreaking to listen as the “city that never sleeps” came to a full stop. Somehow I still found myself coming back to it, imagining night’s ahead, when NYC is back on its feet and I’m roaming its streets. Looking for music, a beer, or maybe just a slice, and fueled by the irreplaceable energy and promise of the greatest city on earth.

The Long Ryders- Down to The Well Americana pioneers the Long Ryders reunited last year for a surprisingly solid album. This single sounds like it could have been recorded during their 80′s heyday featuring their trademark Byrds like jangle and harmonies, but the lyrics mark this song as unmistakably 2020.

Billie Joe Armstrong- That Thing You Do
In the early days of the pandemic we had all our kids (+ a significant other) at our house for a few months. It worked out great and we were luckier than most. The biggest issue was keeping enough food, weed and wine around.  There were some great nights with amazing meals, followed by gathering around the TV together. We re-watched The Sopranos, binged Billy On The Street, and revisited some of our favorite movies. One night we went back to a old family favorite, Tom Hanks’ underrated love letter to the one hit wonders of the post Beatles era, That Thing You Do!  I’ve seen the movie several times and it never fails to please. A true feel good film and a perfect Kodak snapshot capturing a simpler time in American pop culture. 
While we watch the unlikely chart topper’s The Oneders  fizzle as fast as they rose to fame, its not really the point. The movie is really an old fashioned love story. Playing like a perfect hit song you can listen to over and over, full of both hooks and heart. I always thought the title track, written by Fountains Of Wayne leader Adam Schlesinger  (who we lost to Covid), brilliantly captured the British Invasion sound every group wanted after The Beatles stormed America. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong must agree. During the pandemic he cut an album’s worth of cool covers including a faithful version of this one.

Gerard Way (W/Judith Hill - Here Comes the End A tale of discovering music in 2020:  Heard this on a Netflix trailer for the series The Umbrella Factory. Turns out it is performed by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) who also writes the comic book the series is based on. (got all that?) He’s joined on this searing garage/psych rave up by the talented and versatile Judith Hill doing her best Merry Clayton.

Hinds- Spanish Bombs I’ve been following this Madrid based, all female outfit of punky garage rockers for a few years now. I think they are pretty great. This track, recorded for a Joe Strummer tribute bursts with an unbridled joy the stone faced and politically minded Clash could never muster. I bet Joe would love it though

The Secret Sisters- Hand Over My Heart Have enjoyed their harmonies for some time now. This one gives me vague Wilson Phillips vibes and I don’t really mind.

Tame Impala- Breathe Deeper I know I’m supposed to like this guy, all the cool kids do, I’ve even seen the band at Coachella. Over the years very little of the music has stuck to me, but the pandemic offered a bit more free time to dig into this funky dubby, chilled out jam, and it stuck with me. Not to mention that 2020 was all about deep breaths.

Toots and The Maytals- Time Tough  I’ve written an awful lot about my love for Reggae over the years. Right after Bob Marley kicked the door down for me, Toots showed me around the house. Ska, rock steady, and roots. He was true reggae royalty and sadly we lost him to Covid, just after he released what would be his last album. Check my Toots tribute blog and playlist.

Mungo’s Hi Fi- The Beat Goes SKA! These clever UK roots reggae collective never fail to surprise. This kitschy Sonny & Cher cover managed to make me smile every time I heard it. No mean feat in 2020

Stone Foundation (feat. Durand Jones)- Hold on To Love Frequent collaborators with Paul Weller  (he appears on a track on the album), Stone Foundation are back with another batch of their UK soul revival stylings. This one features Durand Jones ( of Durand Jones & The Indications) on vocals and some great reggae style horns at the top.

John Prine (1946 -2020)- Lake Marie We lost so many this year, but this one really stung. A true American songwriting treasure, who was still making great music against all odds right up to his untimely passing. His songs are known for their simplicity, and economy of words. but this one goes against the grain. I’m still not exactly certain what it’s about. Sorrowful and haunting, yet somehow uplifting and redemptive. I heard him perform it live here in Los Angeles a just over a year ago and it has stuck in my head ever since. There is surely a place in heaven for the great John Prine.  He sang about it on his final studio album in 2018. Ironically it became the last song on his last record.

Halloween Party
Paring: miniminter x reader Word count: 1,517 Warnings: A couple of swears, mentions of sexy times. Requested: Yes! Requests: Open (See below)
Y/N: Your name
One morning in late October, I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing. “What do you want?” I ask grumpily, not even bothering to look at who’s calling.  
“And good morning to you too, love,” I hear Simon’s voice on the other end of the phone. “I’m outside your door, can you let me in?”
I let out a huff and hang up on him, clambering out of bed and heading to the door of my London flat.  I open it and turn around without saying a word, on my way back to bed.  Simon follows me to my room and I flop face-down on the bed, grabbing a pillow as I do so.  As he walks through the door I throw it at him and hide under the covers, still pissed, but also giggling silently.  I listen suspiciously for him to jump on me, but I hear nothing, so I snake my head slowly out of the covers.
“Smile!” Simon says, as he snaps several photos of my glorious morning hair before setting his phone down.  I foolishly think that this will be the end of my morning wake-up call, and relax slightly.  The next moment, however, I feel his hands on my stomach, tickling me.
“Si-i-i-mon stop!” I gasp, laughing madly, “Why are you so mean?”
He stops with the tickling and I look up at him, seeing some unreadable emotion in his eyes.  He looks away briefly, and I shake my head, dispelling whatever I thought I saw.
“Because you’re just so adorable,” He laughs, poking me nose and dropping a kiss on my forehead.  He lays down beside me and I sigh happily, ready to go back to sleep.  
“Don’t you want to know why I’m here?” He asks, looking down at me with a smirk on his face.  
“Oh yeah! Why did you feel the need to wake me at this ungodly hour?”
“Well... Apart from wanting to see your beautiful face...”
I slap him good-naturedly on his arm, “Do carry on.”
“Harry and the Cals are hosting a Halloween party this Saturday, want to come?”
“Ooh that sounds fun! Isn’t Halloween on Tuesday though?” I ask in confusion.
“Well yeah, but some people actually have day jobs, including you love,” He laughs at me yet again, “You really must be tired, Y/N, you’re losing it.”
“Ughh,” I groan, “Yeah, I’ll go with you. Now can I go back to sleep?”
I slide down the bed and instantly fall asleep.  I hear Simon put something on Netflix but I ignore it and instead snuggle into his warm chest.  
-A couple of days later-
I’m over at the Sidemen house because I want Freya to approve my costume idea.  The boys are downstairs playing Fifa so we go into Josh’s room and I take out what I bought.
“Ta da!” I exclaim, ripping the bag off and holding its contents out proudly to Freya.
“Oh my god, that is hella sexy,” She gasps, taking it from me and inspecting it. “Try it on for me?”
I nod, and head into the bathroom to change into the costume.  I pull up a picture on my phone of my inspiration as I walk back out of the bathroom.
“... And I’ll have my hair like this.” I finish explaining the idea.
“Damn, Simon is gonna have an absolute spazz when he sees this,” Freya laughs, twirling me around so she can see the full effect.
“Did I hear my name?” Simon asks innocently from outside the door.
“SIMON MINTER, DON’T YOU DARE STEP FOOT IN THIS ROOM!” Freya yells through the door.
“Ok, ok,” I hear him say, and I can imagine him holding up his hands in mock surrender.
“We’ll be downstairs soon,” I call out to him.
“Bye.”
We arrive downstairs a couple of minutes later, and Freya goes over to Josh, no doubt telling him about what my costume plan is.  Simon comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waste, resting his chin on my head.  “What were you doing closeted in Josh’s room?” He mumbles in my ear, making goosebumps rise on my skin.
“None of your business,” I smirk, “You’ll find out soon.”
“Ooh, was it a costume?” He asks, pulling away from me and turning me around so he can see my face.
“You’ll see,” I reply, giving him a peck on the cheek before skipping over to Freya.
“Do you guys actually not know how cute you are?” She asks, “It’s a little bit sickening to be honest.”
“Cute?” I scoff, “Me and Simon? Nahhh it’s all banter with him.”
“Hmm yeah totally,” Josh says, smirking while looking over at a confused Simon.  
-The day of the party-
I show up at Harry’s flat a couple of minutes late, because whoever said you should be on time for a party?  I walk in the door and am greeted by Weller, who gives me a hug before looking me up and down and letting out a whistle.  “If you need a hand with anything tonight, let me know.” He winks at me and I laugh, walking away from him.
I make my way through the rest of the party, greeting Sugg, Caspar, Will Lenney, and the rest of the Sidemen along with their respective girlfriends, getting compliments on my costume as I go.  I grab a drink and look around for Simon.  It takes a while, but I eventually see his blonde head talking to Freya in the corner.  He’s dressed as a classic vampire and I am impressed by how good he looks.    
I walk up to him and tap him on the shoulder.  “Hey spooky Simon.”
He whips around and stares at me for a second, speechless and with his mouth open.  He soon snaps out of it however, and nods appreciatively:  “Harley Quinn, yeah?  Looks good on you.”
I reach up to give him a kiss on the cheek. “You don’t look too bad yourself.”
Behind us, Freya clears her throat and comments, “What did I say, Y/N? Was I right or was I right?”
I just smirk, turning around and pulling Simon behind me as I search for another drink.
“What was that about?” He asks me, looking adorably confused.
“Ah, nothing.  Freya just made a comment the other day and now she thinks she was right.”
“Okkk,” He replies slowly, “Would it have anything to do with me?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.” I say as I reach out and grab another drink.
I get more drunk as the night goes on, and it may just be the costume, but I’m feeling much more bold than usual.  I mostly hang out with Simon, and I find myself gradually getting closer and closer to him.  We are currently sitting down resting, and I’m practically in his lap.  I can feel his hand creeping up my leg, but nobody has noticed yet, thankfully.  
“Si, stop.”  I whisper in his ear.  I can feel him shiver underneath me, but ignore it.  “There’s people everywhere.”
“I don’t care, I want you.” He replies, stroking my arm.
Without any warning I hop up and walk over to the bathroom.  Once inside, I sigh deeply and look at myself in the mirror. “What the fuck are you doing, Y/N?” I say to myself.  “This is Simon.  He’s your best friend.”  
I hear knocking on the door and go to open it, seeing Freya on the other side.  I pull her into the room with me and say, ‘Simon just said that he wants me. What do I do?”
My friend looks at me knowingly and replies, “Well what do you want to do?”
“I want him,” I whisper in realisation.  “I need to find him,” I gasp, opening the door and looking around wildly.  I see him and head straight towards him, barely sparing a glance over my shoulder at Freya, “Thanks, I owe you one.”
I walk up to where he’s chatting with Will, grab him and plant my lips on his.  He doesn’t respond for a second but then I feel his lips moving in time with mine.  I wrap my arms around his neck and he grabs my waist, pulling me closer to him.  I hear cheering behind me but ignore it until I can no longer breathe.  I then break away from Simon and look around, to see Will laughing at us.  “We’ve all been wondering when that would happen,” He says, gesturing around at the sizeable audience who have gathered.
I bury my head in Simon’s chest and he looks around at the crowd.  “Show’s over, you can piss off now.”
He leads me towards the staircase, to a chorus of whistles and cheers.  We don’t make it all the way up the stairs before he pins me to the wall, attacking my lips like his life depends on it.  
“Get a room!” I hear from below. I flip the unknown person off before grabbing Simon’s hand and pulling him up the stairs and to a bedroom.

Dean Winchester’s eclectic taste in music, as shown in his (non-classic rock/heavy metal) FBI aliases
My whole thought process here started today with the famous Aaron scene, and the alias Dean uses while he shows his badge to his “gay thing”.

Yes, Marc Bolan was an openly bisexual celebrity (referenced here by BEN EDLUND, similar to 10x22, where ANDREW DABB references Freddy Mercury - another bisexual man - as one of the other aliases Dean chooses for himself). 
This is a telling reference in itself in the context of this scene, but as a huge T. Rex/Marc Bolan fan myself, this scene got me super excited also besides that. Like, super SUPER excited. Why, you ask?
BECAUSE IT MAKES TEXTUAL THE FACT THAT DEAN IS A GLAM ROCK FAN. Like, classic glam rock. Silk shirts, high heels, glitter eye-shadow glam-rock-fan. A one step away from David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” glam-rock-fan.

He is enough of a fan to take Marc Bolan’s name as his alias while he usually chooses aliases based on classic hard rock musician’s/heavy metal band members that he likes/identifies with.
OR DOES HE?
Out of curiosity (and procrastination, because of course I should be doing something else right now) I checked the list of the music aliases Dean uses over the years (I assume that these aliases are Dean’s ideas since he is the brother more interested in music, after all.) As a result, I spent a great evening with a whole spectrum of music genres, based on Dean Winchester’s amazing and broad AF music taste.
It’s true that most of the aliases Dean chooses are heavy metal and classic rock bands (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Kiss, Ted Nudgent, Styx, Rush, Warrant, Poison, Guns and Roses…)(I don’t blame him, these are great bands).
MOST, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM.
There are exclusively six writers who gave Dean a much more eclectic taste in music during the last seven seasons:
Andrew Dabb
Robert Berens
Ben Edlund
Robbie Thompson
and a writing duo Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder (season 10/11)
So, let’s look at what genres/bands broadens Dean’s iPod album collection, shall we?
1) 80′S HAIR METAL BANDS (GLAM METAL)
Yes, Dean was sneering at Vince Vincente and his spiked codpiece (and a rainbow wig that I am completely sure Dean imagined, because even google can’t find me one band who used that as a prop), but that was all Performing!Dean talking, obviously. How do we know? Because as far as real-life parallels to the fictional band Ladyheart go, this is what Dean hates so much:

Yes, Dean is completely disgusted by leather pants, huge wigs and studded codpieces, here visualized by Mötley Crüe. Dean said so IN TEXT.
(I am pretty sure Ladyheart is supposed to be Mötley Crüe since their next album was to be named “Theatre of Mercy” - mirroring Mötley Crüe’s album “Theatre of Pain”. Also, “Rock Never Dies” was written by ROBERT BERENS, who named another one of his episodes “Girls, Girls, Girls” - after a Mötley Crüe  song and album.)

And yet, in episode 8.02. “What’s up, Tiger Mommy?” (written by ANDREW DABB), Dean introduces himself and Sam as Agents Neil and Sixx, two members of MÖTLEY CRÜE. Which means Dean is a Mötley Crüe fan, and he doesn’t seem to mind huge wigs and studded codpieces that much in their case. (Bam, LAWYERED!)
The name LADYHEART (called into existence by my above mentioned personal god Bobo Berens) reminds me of the British band LADYTRON (playing synth pop/new wave/electronic combo), and named after the super famous ROXY MUSIC synth pop/glam rock song.

So, yeah, Dean is a fan of studded codpieces, big wigs and hair metal. He is also a fan of a long list of different music genres (real Dean behind the cut):

In episode 10x13 “Halt and Catch Fire” (written by ERIC CHARMELO & NICOLE SNYDER), Sam and Dean use aliases “Grohl and Cobain”, as in DAVE GROHL and KURT COBAIN from NIRVANA.

In episode 11x13 “Love Hurts” (also written by ERIC CHARMELO & NICOLE SNYDER) Dean uses alias “agent Weller”, as in PAUL WELLER from the classic British punk rock band THE JAM.

In episode 10x19 “The Werther Project” (written by ROBERT BERENS) Dean pretends to be a Neighbourhood Watch member by the name of Dwight Twilley.
DWIGHT TWILLEY is a power pop singer from the 1980s.

In episode 9x14 “Captives” (written by ROBERT BERENS), Sam and Dean take aliases of “agents Nicks and McVie”.
STEVIE NICKS and CHRISTINE MCVIE are members of the legendary soft rock/art pop/blues band FLEETWOOD MAC. THEY ARE ALSO BOTH FEMALES!!!

In episode 10x14 “The Executioner’s Song” (written again by ROBERT BERENS) Sam and Dean take names “Moore and Ranaldo”.
THURSTON MOORE and LEE RANALDO are members of the legendary indie rock band SONIC YOUTH, with famous vocals of KIM GORDON.

7) PROGRESSIVE POP ROCK/SYNTH POP of 1970s/1980s
In episode 8x17 “Goodbye Stranger” (written by the one and only ROBBIE THOMPSON), Sam and Dean use names “agents Tandy and Lynne”.
RICHARD TANDY and JEFF LYNDE are members of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, a band that combines pop-rock, synth pop, electronic music and elements of disco.

In the episode 5x14, “My Bloody Valentine” (written by BEN EDLUND), Dean uses names “agents Cliff and Marley”, as in JIMMY CLIFF and BOB MARLEY - famous reggae musicians.

In episode 8x08, “Hunteri Heroici” (written by ANDREW DABB), Team Free Will pose as agents “Nash, Crosby, and Stills”.
DAVID CROSBY, STEPHEN STILLS, GRAHAM NASH (and occasionally NEIL YOUNG) were a folk-rock supergroup started in 1968.

In episode 11x04 “Baby” (written by ROBBIE THOMPSON), Dean uses name “agent Walsh” as in JOE WALSH from THE EAGLES, a soft rock band of “Hotel California” fame.

Dean’s taste in music, reflected here in the names of musicians he chooses as his personas, alongside his most favourite rockstars, shows how broad Dean is in his tastes - Dean practically is a fan of anything that sounds good to him, regardless of genre (as shown with his liking for Taylor Swift and Broadway musicals, for example). It’s a shame that this wonderful music taste is still hidden in the subtext, and all I can do is hope that our new Dean will be allowed to play some of his favourite bands in his car next season, especially since both Dabb and Berens seem to be the keepers of Dean’s super eclectic, infinite playlist. Please Dabb, make it happen!

The characteristics of different stop motion animations.
There are lots of types of stop motion animation and each has its own style and characteristics that makes it different from the others.
Brick-films are stop motions made using Lego. This is very popular type of stop motion. With brick-films you can can be very creative as the extensive nature of Lego mixed with a persons imagination. The actual process itself is quite easy all it requires is Lego and a camera and the ability to put the images into a sequence.
The downside to this type of animation is that it can be difficult to create a smooth sequence such as walking this is down to the limits of the limbs on a Lego figure. Along with this, Lego can be quite fragile so it can be difficult to work with but opposing to this the variety of Lego makes it so that you can create absolutely anything due to the mass of Lego props and characters available.

You would think that The Lego Movie was created using only Lego however, this is not the case. They actually used 3D CGI and created the sets using Lego. No physical Lego was actually animated. YouTube has tons of Brick-films. They range from videos to entertain as well as to educate.
This is a Brick-film made to entertain. The creator of the film took 6 months to create the film. The main things to remember when creating this type of stop motion film is make sure your camera is steadily mounted and that you lighting isn’t changed throughout suddenly. Also take your time. Don’t try to rush the process make sure you have plenty of time to shoot a scene so that you don’t forget where your up to or your figures are suddenly moved as this can really mess up your animation.

Another type of stop motion animation is pixilation. Pixilation is a type of animation in which uses people to do a frame by frame sequence. Some people take the approach of using the floor to there advantage. They will place the camera in a birds view shot and then lay on the flaw. This is a very common form used in schools when teaching animation. The idea of pixelation is to create a stop motion using actual people.  
The most famous films created using pixilation were the original Evil Dead films from the 1980s.

Pixelation gives the effect of the human being puppet like as it almost looks forced in the way a puppet master controls their puppet. The advantages of using pixilation is that it can be a very simple to do however, it needs devotion. Because of the characteristics of this style of animation. You have to put some time aside to film a scene because you have to stay in the correct position.

The majority of pixilation animations are just made to entertain. There aren’t many type of alternatives when searching for different types. Below is one made by Joe Weller.

This video uses pixilation using After effects and premier pro to create the effects used in it. Pixelation again is more of animation used to entertain however, it could be used to create educational animations or informative animations.
Another type of animation is clay animation. this is probably the most popular form of animation outside of 3D animation. Clay-mation is achieved through creating models made of clay or Plasticine to create movement. this from of animation can be fluid and quite easy to do again. The term clay-mation came from Will Vinton who actually copyrighted the term by his studio- Vinton Studios.
The great thing about clay animation is how easy it is to cause movement due to the fact that the materials used is flexible and can create human like movement. Some of the most famous uses of Clay animation include: Wallace and Gromit, ParaNorman and Morph.

Here is an example where clay animation has been used for educational purposes. Clay animation is a good way to create an educational animation aimed towards younger children because they will understand what it is and also be able to do it them selves and get involved with it and try and recreate the letters of the alphabet for example. However, clay animation is also used in film, in fact it is a very popular form to use for film animation as seen here:

Clay animation is able to be used fore a wide range of purposes and is a very easy technique to do however, like all types of animation it is time consuming so it does require patience and some skill to create a smooth animation.
One final form of animation is Puppet/model. this form of animation is similar to clay animation however a wider range of materials are used whether it be wood, clay or 3D printed parts. Puppet animation is a really good way to create fluid life-like movements because you can have such detail especially with 3D printed parts. One film where this was used was Kubo and the two strings. they used these printed parts as well as wire models for there puppets. they created a ton of faces so that they could have fluid facial movements.

This form of animation is a lot more complicated and as a cause is only really used for bigger productions such as feature length films compared to amateur animations. However, this doesn’t mean it could stop you from using it. This form of animation has been on the rise for the past 8 years now and has started to become a lot more prominent in animation children films. Personally, I feel it is a really good way to create a strong looking and feeling animation film if doen with care and time. These types of animations are time consuming but do produce a well crafted film.
Whilst considering this type of animation lets also have a little look at 3D animation. 3D animation is also very common these days and is widely used on TV adverts for informative effect as seen here:

This video shows some 3D animation used to inform people of road safety especially aimed towards younger children. The reason why this is effective is because it is serious but by using animation it makes it more appealing and whilst not being real people it still get the message across to the younger audience.
From what I have shown here in this post about a few forms of animation techniques and also what purposes they are used for. You can see how each are similar in there characteristics and purposes but each of them has something that makes them stand out and be that bit different. All of them can be used to create fluid animations, they can even be combined with real life seen in the most recent M&M adverts.

Animation is a greate way to create short videos or full fetaure films, they are quite easy to do butr do require some basic skill and equiptment and also a lot of time. Its all about making sure you take your time and produce fluid movements for a quality made final product.

REVIEW: WHO’S OLIVIA? LIVE AT THE CELLAR; APRIL 5, 2019

Photo Credits: Chloë Coll (Denholm Promotions) The Cellar’s one of the smallest live music venues in Aberdeen to greet Spring with.  Last night, right in Aberdeen’s city centre, The Cellar hosted an intimate gig with varied sounds throughout the night.  The aforementioned Spring, day’s forecast, explaining the quite healthy turnout. There were three acts to pin your ears back for.  Headliners, Who’s Olivia?, with Keys To The Caravan and Terra Nøva in supporting slots. “You’re in the big time, now,” said the somewhat tongue in cheek house engineer during soundcheck.  “We don’t hang about, here.” For whatever reason, “You’re in the jungle, baby.  You’re gonna die” from “Welcome To The Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses sprang to mind.

Kicking off this gig were Terra Nøva, an ambient alternative rock four-piece from Aberdeen.  They comprised of Shaun Will, vocalist and rhythm guitarist; Joe Birnie, lead guitarist; Nathan Bain, bassist and Chris Van Der Wal, drummer. These guys are, indeed, atmospheric which’s evidenced on their debut EP. They mix shoegazing elements, atmospheric with choppy chords inspiring football chants live.  Wild lead playing revelatory for a quite sedate genre. Recent (March 24) Grampian’s Got Talent finalists, too. Terra Nøva’s Euphoric EP can be bought on iTunes, here. They began hard hitting; intense drum, spaced out guitar, driving bass and hoarse vocal made for an interesting concoction with the added bonus of soaring lead.  After this was the seemingly jazzy shuffle of drum, throbbing bass and vocals conveying a real sense of vulnerability. “One, two, three, four!” This hammering into the next.  This contrasting somewhat with the sedate, eerie wailing of guitar, ethereal and otherworldly.  The clean rhythm licks a tad funky.  After that, baring all. The intended conclusion to the set proved that they kept their most raucous for last, though there was a calm before the storm. Joe became as animated as those licks in his lead playing, and that’s saying something.  In the zone, wild and free. Next, the conclusion proper to their set.  “Oregon”.  This with syncopated, hi-hat intensity with a cacophonic end.  They definitely left the best until last, the crowd absolutely loving it.  What a way to finish, and the lead playing as vital as ever with much grit and attitude.

Main support act were four-piece rock and indie straight from Kemnay in Aberdeenshire, Keys To The Caravan.  They comprised of Gregor Carlin, rhythm guitarist and vocalist; Callum Ewen, lead guitarist; Michael Fyffe, bassist and vocalist and Matthew Mckessick, drummer. They like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Amy Winehouse, Biffy Clyro and Don McLean. With over twenty thousand views on their Facebook videos, this upcoming originals band are unsigned despite those phenomenal views.  They release their first EP this summer to put that following to the test. They started with some soulful rock. Moody, brooding and spirited. Then it was wistful before building into scratchy strum of electric guitar.  It had a sort of rapping delivery to it, too.  “Brit poppy, Paul Weller-y sort of style,” was how they introduced the next. Angular and hard edged, indeed. Commanding, high register bass. “Bouncer” was where things got a little more serious.  Basically, one of their friends had been manhandled by a doorman and died because of it.  Abrasive, choppy and daresay heavy handed to convey their anger and desolation. Subsequent to this was a cover of Nirvana track, “Heart Shaped Box”. Good vocal harmonies in this reinterpretation.  This strangely followed by a good soul rock workout.  “Broken Mirror” was wistful and contemplative, shoving drum making it otherwise. Following this, a night crawler riff on bass suggesting intrigue with lead playing much impassioned.   Another big cover, now.  This in the guise of “Sympathy For The Devil”, The Rolling Stones.  Seemingly more lead bass than the Bill Wyman original, how you can add to an already legendary bassline’s a feat in itself.  Set ending on a high. Headline act, How’s Olivia?, were an ambient pop four-piece from Glasgow. They comprised of Colette McLaughlin, lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist; Max Murphy, guitarist, vocalist and synthesiser; Ben Main, bassist and vocalist and Rhys Robertson, drummer and vocalist. They enjoy the likes of Wolf Alice, Amanda Bergman, Waxahatchee, TesseracT, Rishloo, Jeff Buckley, Regina Spektor and Amy Winehouse. Tastes within the band going from metal, to progressive rock and even jazz. They formed late 2017 and they release first single, “She”, this summer.  This with a debut EP coming out in the next few months, too. They opened pleading “Touch Me”.  This with processed vocal before going into syncopated hi-hat groove and eerie synth. Another plead, perhaps not pyrotechnic, in “Set Me Alight”.  Slow, emphatic hit of the drum.  Reverberating.  Then laidback and kind of jazzy. Contemplative, then crushing cacophony. Then you told, quite plainly, “You’ll Never Know”.  Hi-hat intensity, calm but busy in a jazzy sort of way.  Then that hit.  Victorious.  Then hurried and anxious, again. “Trigger” was like straight out a Western, tumbleweed blowing by through some dirt town.  Perhaps, the trigger of some sharpshooter’s gun? Anyway, moody and forlorn music. Vocals belted out.  Keys tinkling amidst much, loud fanfare. As said, they release first single, “She”, this summer and that’s what they played next. This slow and melancholy.  Barren and empty until that almost swooning, mournful vocal.  Later this soared, eloquent in expressing pain. “Bleed”, you could imagine, more painful.  Swaying from side to side, like crashing of waves.  The drums hitting like an old fire bell, ringing with immediacy, the guitar work intricate.  The bass strangely funky, too.  The gathered crowd were then requested, as by title, to look back on all “Since September”.  Melancholy reared its head.  Slow and slightly despondent, the thump of drum like a heartbeat.  Bass grooving, right in the pocket, bouncing off well with the guitar and drum.  The vocal right down the microphone and overloading slightly.  Real grit. Maybe the next would answer the question of the night, just who’s “Olivia”? This was sad, everything at a leisurely pace.  Perhaps happy in a longing kind of way.  Pining for, anticipating every moment with, Olivia? To further this, things could get yet more enraptured in “Give Yourself To Me”. Wistful and intricately plucked. Pulsing synthesiser went right through you, weird like a higher plane of existence.  This grew bolder and more elaborate. “Just for Aberdeen,” Collette perhaps said at the behest of Max, who’s originally an Aberdonian. There was stomp of drum for emphasis at the start of “Desire”.  Quite despondent, though.  Top of the lungs vocal in despair.  Guitar and vocal refrain suggested change of outlook.  Hitting harder, more emphatically.  High register bass.  Vocal blowing a gasket.  Overloaded electronics blowing a fuse. Closer, “Animal”, unveiled the somewhat primal.  The beat of the drum lead into an emphatic rocker.  Vocals soaring, primal animal instinct.  A fitting conclusion.
