Don was deep in thought while he walked to the general store. So much so that he didn’t hear Bobby yelling at him from across the street and the next thing he knew, Bobby was at his side, interrupting his racing mind with a nudge to his side.

“Going deaf on me now, Hume?”

All Don did was shake his head and continued walking.

“So where ya headed?” Bobby had to quicken his pace in order to keep up with Don’s long stride.

“The store.”

“What’re the chances? I’m headed there too!” Bobby noticed that Don was ignoring him. “You okay there, Don? You seem… quieter than normal.”

“I’m fine.” He wasn’t. Truth be told, his stomach was in knots and the knots were only getting tighter the closer he got to the store.

Bobby wasn’t convinced and, after prodding again, Don snapped at him. “We’re not in the boat, Moch; you don’t have to cox me.”

Bobby let his remark fly; Don was obviously worked up about something and was in a mood so for now, he’d let him be. Okay.

Gothic Romance AU

Since my first viewing of Holes (2003) I felt it was a missed opportunity for a ghost story. On that bus ride to Camp Greenlake Stanley sees the ghost of Sam the onion man, and from there I've been desperate to have the ghost rown of Green Lake explored to its full potential.

This would feed my curiousity for Sam as a character. I'd be able to directly address the injustice he suffered by the town of Green Lake that Holes the book and movie only implied.

The tone could be changed to horror very easily. An original TV spot already had the vibe I'm shooting for.

I plan on focusing more on the Warden and the history of Green Lake. A town suffering from a century of drought right after a lynching that took the schoolhouse with it is already compelling to me. There was surely death that followed behind Sam and the Green Lake Sheriff. A famine would have followed shortly after the drought. Those who couldn't leave were hit the hardest. Then there is the disfunction of the Walker family suffered from being land rich, but money poor.

To relate back to the, "coming home" aspect of things, Stanly could be related to Kissing Kate Barlow on his mother's side. This heritage is implied in the novel. Then, he would only have heard of Green Lake Texas as a town that hardened an outlaw. Only to learn the true horrors of the ghost town.

The song "If Only" by Fiction Plane from the original motion picture soundtrack is also an inspiration for the generational trauma, poetic prose, and general tone.
