Over a month without posting anything... September has been quite a hard month. We had the intention to open quick commissions (which ngl, we need to do) but we've gone through so much that we just lacked the energy to even grab a pencil. But life (and the show) must go on, so we're slowly getting back to work.
No WhateverChallengetober this year, we're taking it as easy as we can, so we're just finishing some stuff we already had around.
So here's one of our fav characters from Cirque du Soleil's Kooza, The Trickster. This was supposed to be a quick sketch, but it would not be us if we didn't get carried away... 😅

i love obsessing over my favourite characters. i love being interested in things that make me happy. i love enjoying my interests and being self indulgent in them. i love being invested in the stories people write about my favs. i love seeing others appreciate the same silly funky guys i love.

Well now I gotta know your thoughts on all the different tricksters (or at least the ones you have thoughts on)
I have thoughts on a handful of them over time!
Jason Berrent, obviously, the OG. I never saw him live, but what a warm, sly, powerful Trickster he made.
My first one live was Justin Sullivan and I just fell head over heels for the character. He had an acrobatic background, as did Jason, but he still brought quite a bit more tumbling than I'd yet seen before for Trickster. I wish I had a clearer memory of him specifically and I unfortunately don't have a decent reference picture of him in the role, but details or no, I can tell you his Kooza changed my life forever. He was in Alegria and La Nouba as well (powertrack both times), and now he's the Artistic Director at Drawn to Life! Cirque success story :')
My second was Mike Tyus, whom I think is my favorite Trickster of all time. I had initially been skeptical of him because up until then the character was firmly an acrobat in my mind, but Mike was a dancer. And a phenomenal one. The level of control, grace, and attitude he was able to deliver was unlike any Trickster I'd seen before or since. I'll never forget that he, during the intro to contortion, gestured as though gathering dust from the air, blew on it, and sent it drifting from his fingers. The contortionists came to life in the exact same second and it was just a marvel to see such a careless moment create such dramatic impact. The development he brought to the Kashmir relationship is unmatched.
I never saw Joey Arrigo live, but fuck if he didn't look like a fun one. Another fantastic dancer-Trickster.
I never saw Matt Antonucci either, but he always looked a little to baby-faced to make an ideal Trickster to me. What do I know though - I'm sure he was rad.
Mitch Wynter, on the other hand, I did see twice, and what a fucking treat! His Trickster is tiny, controlled, and electric. I'd never seen one lean so heavily into the electricity of the character's arrival and motifs the way he does. You just expect his wiggly little fingers to spark at any moment. Really really fantastic.
And Joey Vice is the newest and just looks fucking great. Another dancer that appears to put a lot of extra emphasis on pirouettes in a way I haven't seen others do. He's also shown interest in other disciplines like silks... could we potentially see him featured in a proper act one day?? I would adore that.

Some weeks ago Mizuki Shinagawa (Kashmir) posted some cool pictures from Kooza that inspired us so much we drew this to practice lighting and dynamic poses ☺️ Hope we did them justice!
