Into the Fray

Something was very wrong here. Cairi’s garden gate was unhooked and tapping against the latch. Many of her medicinal herb that lined the dirt walkway up to her home were trampled. Beyond that her pretty red door was wide open, hanging off the hinges, and the window in it was shattered. One of the potted plants usually sitting just inside the door was dumped across the welcome mat and front porch stoop. Where earthy footprints of someone who didn’t have hooves had left their marks.

Upon stepping over the threshold it was even more obvious something bad had happened. The open floor plan of the first floor made it easy to see all the damage from where they stood. Tables and chairs had been turned over and had scorch marks from Cairi’s offensive magics. One of her tall bookshelves was toppled over the chair in that corner and the lamp and books were on the floor. Next to one of the area rugs, that was runkled out of place was a modest but pretty mahogany jewelry box. The lid was broken and the contents was on the floor. Some antique but very elegant silver rings and necklaces, a string of cream rose colored pearls and a few pea sized rubies that were perfectly round and smooth.

Just beyond that near the stairs was a switchblade covered in silvery blood and laying in a small puddle of it next to what was obviously six inches of Cairi’s braided hair. And as the brown locks continued to lay there they were rapidly turning snow white. 

“Quarrrrrk Quark!” came the croak of Cairi’s Raven. The albino corvid was sitting on the kitchen counter near the sink. And just under him, slumped on the floor was Cairi. Looking very much worse for wear. A split lip and a nasty large darkening handprint on her cheek, a bleeding cut over her left eyebrow, her sleeve was ripped and there was another bruise on her shoulder. More cuts and nasty bruises on her arms and even one on her thigh. And her hand and a dishtowel was clasped against her side. 

“Help~” she managed to murmur.

Uh, seems I should give a crash course of Japanese needed to understand Dragon Ball 101... and some things you see in the fandom lol

Just out there: I'm a linguist / grammar nerd, my knowledge of Japanese as a whole is very limited. I just use the following tips to understand most of what's happening and how I deconstruct things, as well as why/how certain things are written!

So here, please check it out if you're interested in how I decipher most of it!

Today.. writing systems !

Japanese uses three writing systems (well, 4):

Hiragana: syllables; mostly used for prepositions and words. They're round and have few strokes.

Katakana: syllables; mostly used for foreign-loan words, emphasis, sounds, and machine-caused onomatopoeia. They're square and have few strokes too.

Kanji: ideograms; Kanji are (usually) words/concepts on their own and there's thousands of them. They come from Chinese. On their own, or coupled with each other, Kanji carry their own meaning. They're also combinatory (aka one kanji can contain many kanji within; check how tree 木, woods 林 and forest 森 are written for example; yup, it's just more trees squished together lol)

Romanji: latin alphabet letters (if I write "watashi", this is romanji). The transcription of japanese to the latin alphabet actually follows some rules, put a pin on it I'll explain that later.

Hiragana and Katakana are the same syllables, if it helps you out, think of them as lower and upper case letters (they don't have the same uses tho). Together, they're called kana.

In green: しかし (shi-ka-shi), means "however"); this is written in hiragana

In red: マシン (ma-shi-n ; machine) and ドクターゲロ (dokutoru—gero ; doctor gero)

in blue: 人造人間 has the kanji for man/person twice. It literally translates to "man-made human being" (and in English we've translated this to Artificial Human or Android, while some other languages translated it to Cyborg).

You can see that next to the blue square with 人造人間, there's tiny hiragana (じんぞうにんげん; ji-n-zo-u-ni-n-ge-n); those are called furigana and are present to tell the reader how the kanji is read (and what it means haha). Most shonen manga have them because they're aimed at kids who don't know all of the kanji yet! Furigana are also important because kanji can be read in two different ways (the kanji for mountain is either read as yama or san for instance; it's got to do with the Chinese pronunciation or the word as well as whether the kanji is on its own or combined with another).

Same here: everything is in hiragana except for Gohan's name (with the little furigana to tell you to read it as go-ha-n) and Gohan's age of 4 (they use the romanji /latin for numbers instead of the proper kanji).

If you remember Death Note, there's a moment in which Misa reads Light's full name above his head, but she reads his first name's kanji (月) as "tsuki" and then she's told it's actually read "light" (ライト; ra-i-to; aka the katakana transcription for the English word light)

Now, remember that pin about romanji? And if you remember some old (oooold) fanfics where Vegeta's name is written Bejïta? Well, this comes from that. Japanese syllables don't allow to transcribe everything, and phonology makes it so that Japanese speakers tend to pronounce loan words according to their syllables.

Dragon Ball's katakana name is ドラゴンボール (do-ra-n-go- bo—ru, or Doragon Bōru in the proper transcription system (the — means "longer vowel" which transcribes to an ō). This is why you sometimes see Goku's name written Gokū or, in old books, Gokuh or Gokou, and his furigana is go-ku-u). And there's a lot of loan-words used as names in Dragon Ball. Vegeta's name are the katakana for BE JI (+ longer vowel) TA.

Of course, when you know "all Saiyans are named after Vegetables", you can easily transcribe "back" to the origin-word that it was supposed to represent (you don't go around and write doragon boru, you write dragon ball, after all). Some are easier than others, and Toriyama (with his dad!boomer energy who loves bad puns) also switched some syllables around... Hell, even Saiya-jin (saiyans) (with jin as the kanji for people/population) is actually rearranged syllables for Yasai (vegetables). With that knowledge, Raditz could be transcribed as Radis or Radish (depending on your language) and Kakarot could be carot (or cacarot).. To go back to the original reference instead of playing translating back and forth forever lol.

Same for Bulma. Her katakana name is bu-ru-ma which is the transcription for "bloomers" (aka those gym shorts). This is why in old doujins, you'll see her name be written as Bluma or Bloomer or any other option around that. Bulma's name is written with latin letters very early on though, so there's consensus about her name, but there are others...

So let's talk about ブラ(bu-ra), the second kid of Vegeta and Bulma.

Until DBS came around, it was generally accepted that her name is Bra (like Trunks' name is Trunks and not Torankusu or Tolanks.. even if some people will write torankusu and I find that hilarious), because everyone in Bulma's family is named after undergarments (Bloomers, Panties (Panchy), Brief (Dr Briefs in English, professor Brief elsewhere), Trunks... and Bra for brassiere or plain old bra).

But in DBS, the anime gave her the Bulma treatment and showed her name in latin letters (Bulla).

Now.. why does it look so weird sometimes?

Because Katakana (and Hiragana) are syllable systems, and as such, no consonant (except for N) exists on its own. All consonants must have a vowel attached to them! And when a foreign word is transcribed to katakana, this is how they (generally) do it:

Base on the pronunciation, not on the actual spelling of the word.

If there's a consonant sound alone, add u (except T and D, those get an o)

If the sound doesn't exist as-is in the syllables available, pick the next best thing (fa will be fu + tiny a to let people know how to read it FA and not FUA). The L and R sounds are grouped together into the transcription with R, but they're more or less pronounced the same (in the middle). If you need a harder R, refer to the next point.

Use "longer vowel before this symbol" (ー) and "harder consonant after this symbol" (ッtiny version) symbols as needed to emphasize stress syllables or. (ベジータ (bejita) カカロット (kakarotto)

Profit.

This is why sometimes you'll see "Furiza" and you'll be "wait what" and then pronounce it and say "ooo.. Freezer". Why does English write it as Frieza? idk. French does Freeza and Spanish Freezer (the name is not the exact transcription for Freezer, since they removed a —; it's フリーザ instead of フリーザー)

Here's a fun example:

Fu-(tiny a)-i-na-ru- fur-a- (harder consonant)shu;

Fainaru Furasshu.

You know those "U" are usually there because of how the syllables work. Let's remove them.

Fainar Frassh.

You also know those R letters aren't hard strong R, so pronounce them a little softer, without rolling them. Pronounce this out loud now.

As my scanner now works, I'll show you how older fandom people used to transcribe the katakana names in latin letters before there was an official "decision" about such things!

The day mk abandoned the kung fu death tournament high eastern fantsy aesthetic and then copied the Dcu/mcu aesthetic

Is the day mk fuckin died. It started with the cash grab crossover, then the dlc guest characters, and now this convoluted inconsistent assassination of characters.

Examples:

sin\del (was supposed to be manipulated by dark magiks from q=uan chi. Was never fuckin evil and never killed jerrod bc SH/AO KAH/N DID AND THATS SCREWING HIS CHARACTER OVER TOO all for some mommy dommy milf fantasy which is absolutely from a "hetcis man's" gaze dont fool yourself)

ku\ng la\o (turned him into a second banana cocky type and just keep killing him for shock value when before he kinda never got this treatment. He was is and always WILL be li/u kan/g's equal in skill and warriors heart)

ra\iden (a LITERAL GOD who was so strong he was only bound by the rules of mortal kombat and the elder gods and his soft spot for mortals and loyalty to protecting earthrealm, kind and wise. Turned into a supposed dEmi-GOd who was willing to use the realm that was his charge as a fucking bargaining chip to a man who's more untrustworthy than shan/g ts/ung, he's hardly around OR he's suddenly not as powerful until he remembers he can obliterate ppl with lightning, he's a cold hardass who's so alien to mortals emotions despite being around them longer and basically raising one like his own son)

li\u k\ang (turned into basically every shonen protagonist ever type levels of character development, gets fucked over in the romance department Although kit/ana has her fair share of problems with writing too, becomes a god in the most deus ex machina way possible and is so intrusive to kun/g la/o and his legacy to meddle with the great kung lao like some sort of savior bs)

sha\ng tsun\g before aftermath (having his whole ass character trashed to the side for some milf dominatrix fantasy in 9 is the only reason i fucking need here lbh)

son\ya (her whole character is stale and practically revolved around the fact she fucks and marries a dude she's so incompatible with just bc of "we need the original characters to make next gen characters we dont care if they're compatible lol" literally has an accidental pregnancy literally divorced jo/hny and then fucking dies, and then comes back anyways "but its the version fans like right oh btw shove in the fact that Son/ya's purpose is to malke cas/sie and thats it shes just mom character now but #gurlboss am i right plz buy game")

ja/x (gets traumatized to hell and back for very little payoff used as depression fetish exploitation, at least his tower ending is great despite the "#woke" bs, his daughter however has the most fucked ending to basically erase herself to make j/ax happy like???? Sonya literally has an avengers/justice league ass tower ending all peachy keen but the black woman cant have any happiness huh mmm sure ok yeah.)

Jacq/ui (honestly im not too into her character but when i heard about her tower ending it pissed me off so much and made me hate the writing even more like oh some characters get basically whatever they wanted no consequence but some characters are doomed to be fucked??? Like hello favoritism MUCH?!? -coughhanzosgodofwarripofftowerendingcough-)

with new characters added that have so much potential but poor execution (i mean seriously you wanna tell me ce/trion and kroni/ka actually killed the elder gods THE ELDER GODS AKA THE BIG POWERFUL DIVINE COUNSEL but have trouble with making rai/d/en and li/u fi/ght and kill each other??? Let alone try to kill one at a time??)

I do like some things like kolle/ctor and ge/rus and cet/rion like i like those characters but by god cetr/ion was wasted potential you cant drop her brother was fucking shinn/ok and then proceed to basically make her some weak errand girl who i feel in the end is making fun of the "divine feminine gaia" aesthetic like the writing wants her to be the bad guy but also sympathetic in the dumbest way possible and she sounds like someone on Twitter who just learned about the concept of "balance" and slaps buddha quotes incorrectly

Also i never cared for shin/nok until recently when i was like "hey wait no his concept kinda slaps actually"

At the end of the day we all have our opinions i guess. And mine is: mk new timeline is written by people who like superheroes movies when mk should be written by people who like kung fu movies

Danger Noodle 101

Cairi came out of the house with a tray in hand. It was laden with her own tea pot and cups and a plate of a selection of some of her freshest cookies. It was a really pretty day today. It was warm and breezy and filled with the sweet scent of plum blossoms. Bees were making happy work with all the early spring blossoms. Her chickens were pecking around in their pen, and her raven was taking a snooze on his favorite perch. In the lily pond the fish were swimming about happily.

Zitian was not here today. Which was a shame. Cairi was missing him very much. But she wasn’t alone on her day off at least.

“Here we are!” She smiled and placed the tray gently on the little garden table. She set out the cups for her guests, poured the tea, served a plate of some of the cookies alongside that, and then sat down herself and served herself. 

“I wasn’t expecting company today but I’m happy tae have ye here. Have ye been well?” She looked up at Baohu Ku and picked up her own cup.

Kali ini saatnya berpetualang di industri.

Salah satu yg aku tunggu² hihi.

Selama 2 pekan kmrn aku bekecimpung di semua hal ttg bakteri & jamur, alias di mikrobiologi.

Seruuu alhamdulillah. Jd merefresh skill ngelab ku yg terakhir itu yaa pas skripsian.

Seneng ketemu personil disini yg msh muda² bgt line 04, 05, 07. Berasa punya adek 3 yg suka ngejekin,

"Jangan marah² trs ges nanti jd seumuran sm teh nana lho" hmm wkwkk.

Tp mereka baik² & act of service sekalii.

Besok senin udah pindah bagian lagi, belajar lagi^^

Jujur, aku gak expect bakal ditempatin di industri ini.

Krn ada tempat lain yg aku pengenin.

Tp lagi² ini soal menerima dan percaya Allah gak mgkn mau nyasarin kita.

Kalo dibawa kesini, berarti ini udh yg paling terbaik dan Allah pgn aku belajar sesuatu disini.

Yaa walaupun butuh waktu untuk berdamai, tp alhamdulillah Allah Maha Baik.

Hidup itu manut Allah saja mau bawa kemana.

Bukan berarti gak boleh punya mimpi², harus malah. Lakukan yg terbaik.

Tp jika belum sejalan dgn maunya Allah, mimpi² kita bukan segalanya. Gak hrs semuanya kayak yg kita mau.

Karna Allah sebaik²nya perencana, percaya aja.

Mgkn ibadahnya disana, ridho kpd setiap yg Allah tentukan dlm hidup kita. Apa pun..

Peaking

Hola amigos…

Sudah memasuki minggu ke-2 bulan September WOW… 2023 ini cepet banget gaksih, apa perasaan w aja…

Ni hari Senin awalnya mau wfh aja karena semaleman diare kebangun 2x jam 2 pagi dan 4 pagi padahal baru tidur jam 1… Akhirnya juga bangun jam 8.30 karena pengin ke belakang lagi HUHU. Yang jam 2 langsung minum Imodium 2 tablet + tolak angin, terus yang jam 4 minum norit 5 biji + oralit. Ku tuh sebetulnya punya 1 strip neo-entrostop pas kemarin otw ke UK juga sakit perut tapi gatau nyelip di mana itu obat… Yaudahlah abis ini beli lagi aja di Boots… Kemudian jam 9-an Oliv ngajak lunch bareng karena dia sudah kembali ke Oxford… Ku yang ekstrovert ini tentu saja tidak bisa resist the urge untuk ngobrol dan ketemu orang sehingga ku memutuskan untuk mandi dan berangkat jam 12 teng, setelah sebelumnya sarapan es kopi (di rumah masih panas banget) dan sandwich telor + gimbap beef dibikinin Listi huhu terharu.

Di linacre barusan makan fish dan cabbage + carrot (gaada karbonya samsek baru sadar w), lalu ke office deh sekarang. Ini tuh lagi bingung selain 1 stip obat hilang, gunting kuku juga gatau ada di mana… Padahal ini kuku udah mulai panjang (terutama kaki)… Semoga ada di pouch makeup deh ya, nanti sampai rumah cek lagi.

Kemarin weekend lumayan lah ya istirahatnya… Walaupun ku sebetulnya belum merasakan efek relaxing dari rumah yang sekarang seperti rumah Headington sih… Apa karena panas banget ya? Di rumah headington tuh buka gorden langsung view halaman belakang pohon-pohon dan emang under shade banget sih, window kamar tuh, ngadepnya ke utara jadi gapernah dapet direct sunlight, dan apa karena di ground floor juga ya, beneran ADEMMM banget, to the level it gets REALLY cold sih kalau lagi winter, tapi ya gapapa juga, I prefer cold tinggal layering aja yang banyak daripada kepanasan gabisa di-apa-apa-in.

Sabtu ke rumah Bu Yani PANAS-PANASAN HUHU. Untungnya dari rumah cuma sekali sih naik X1 dari stasiun… TAPI jalan ke stasiunnya yang HELLISH banget. I eventually decided to pake payung aja deh tu jalan… bebas deh orang mau nge-judge apa gimana gua mah ga peduli ye, yang penting ni sunlight ga directly menyerang my skin… Terus di rumah Bu Yani banyak makan enak (walaupun pedas sekali, which might’ve been contributing to my diarrhea now). Ada es teler juga!!! Sangat senang. Kayanya di rumah bisa deh ini bikin es buah/es teler kalau masih panas juga ke depan… Kemarin habis dikasih kalengan buah-buahan sama Wian… Tapi barusan cek weather forecast harusnya ke depan udah mulai masuk weather autumn sih (HAMDALAH). Yaudah itu buah buat buka puasa aja kali ya tahun depan… Semoga belum expired deh.

Dari rumah Bu Yani, Nadia ikut pulang karena mau nginep di rumah. Malemnya ya curhat-curhat relationship aja biasa, dilanjut nonton Jeongwaja dan Workman sangat lucu ternyata nonton video absurd youtube tu memang lebih enak kalo ramean ya, kalo sendirian ada aja yang lucu tapi missed. Lalu tidur. Kepanasan juga sih ini beberapa kali kebangun saking keringetannya. Paginya Nadia ada meeting terus I decided to look at pics from SKZ albums I bought from Nadia (karena udah lewat juga sih fasenya dia). Sekarang juga lagi mikir gimana caranya naroh ni poster-poster without ruining the wall…

Barusan seharian ini literally belom buka kerjaan wkwk malah ngurusin akun abal geologi gitu lagi HUHU. Semua cerita lengkapnya ada di akun X aku ya ges.

Duh ni post tuh awalnya dikasih judul “peaking” karena mau bahas periode di mana orang-orang peaking bisa beda-beda: ada yang di high-school, [PELATNAS!], kuliah S1, kuliah S2, kerja di tempat A, B, dst. Terus pengennya sih bahas panjang lebar gimana ciri-cirinya orang-orang yang peaking di past ini dan mau bilang kalo kasian ya mereka... tapi sekarang otak udah dipenuhi hal-hal lain huhu (saking banyaknya yang terjadi pada hidupku dalam 24 jam terakhir). Intinya tapi doaku untuk semua orang semoga kalian selalu peaking in the present! Jadi semoga sekarang kalian lagi merasa peaking: “I’m at my best in my life!” Terus besok datang dan kalian peaking lagi. Jadi grafiknya akan naik terus! Walaupun ga mungkin sih ya, life kan akan ada ups and downs, tapi minimal general trendnya selau naik! Ku salah satu yang ngerasa Alhamdulillah hidup selalu peaking sampai sekarang: pas high school ya senang sekali, lalu pelatda pelatnas juga senang, masuk ITB senang, ke Paris S2 senang, ke UI kerja senang, sekarang Alhamdulillah di Oxford walaupun depressed kadang-kadang tapi tetap senang juga in general. Senangnya to the level yang bisa bilang “Oh ini kayanya the best period of my life deh, the best achievement I am working on.” Semoga bisa gini terus sampai meninggal. Selalu ada yang bisa dikerjain with me being proud and happy doing it. AAMIIN.
