Chapter 2: Annoying neighbors become annoying friends
Tumblr media
The next day, Kai was so late.
And by "so late", I mean a minute late. But it wasn't her fault! Duri was being a menace when getting ready for the morning. She held interviews all day the day before, and found a suitable Nanny for Duri. A new nanny, by the name of Felix, who surprised her with his deep, Australian accent.
She didn't have time to be skeptical, it was her and Duri's future she needed to worry about. That was why she was a panting mess when she finally clocked in for her first day of work. Her coworkers looked at her wide-eyed; a great first impression.
Minho helped her through her first day; training her on their medical system, how to take calls (apparently a lot different than the US), and how to check people in. By noon, all she wanted to do was curl up in bed with her daughter and sleep.
“You’re Kai, right? The new secretary?” Kai’s coworker, Jeongin, asked. Kai nodded, sighing in defeat as she ate the sad Bulgogi that she rushed together at the last second. She was glad now that her mom taught her how to make Korean dishes.
“Yeah,” Kai sighed. “I wish I would’ve known how difficult it was to be a secretary for a veterinary clinic, I would’ve looked for a more subtle way to make money. Is prostitution legal here in South Korea?”
Jeongin laughed slightly, before shaking his head. “You’re going to have to go to the Netherlands for that. Other than it being hard, how are you going on?” He sat beside her, setting his jajangmyeon down beside her own dish.
“Honestly, it’s not that bad. Sure, it’s overwhelming, but it’s worth it.” Kai smiled sweetly, finishing the last of her Bulgogi. Jeongin nodded, slurping his own meal, sighing contently with the taste.
“That looks lovely, did you make it?” Kai asked, eyeing the jajangmyeon with envy. Why didn’t she have the ability to make such amazing looking food?
“My roommate did. He’s all big on protein, so he makes all our meals with heavy doses of the sucker.” Jeongin smiled. Then, her phone rang. Kai frowned; there was no way she had anyone in her phone.
“Hello?” Kai answered, brows furrowed.
“Ms. Fei? This is Felix.” The familiar deep, Australian voice was like magic to her ears.
“Hey Felix, you don’t need to call me miss, just call me Kai. I might be your boss but I’m still younger than you, sweetheart.” You could hear her smile through the phone. “What’s up?”
“Yeah, so, I was trying to put Duri down for a nap, and I hear this bass from upstairs-”
“Oh, so you’ve met my lovely neighbors.” Kai’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “Sorry Felix, continue.”
“Well, I went upstairs to ask them to turn it down because little one started crying and there was this short guy, who looked like a chipmunk, that answered the door. Long story short, I think you might need to move.”
“...Why?”
“I punched him.”
Kai let out a laugh from shock. “You punched him?!”
“Not that hard! He was being rude about Duri, so I got mad and smacked him.” Felix mumbled, feeling embarrassed. “I just wanted to call since you might have an angry man on your doorstep in a few.”
Kai sighed, hands running through her hair.” Okay, thanks for the heads up. How is she doing, by the way?”
“So good! She’s a dream,” Felix gushed. “She called me ‘Lixie’ today”
“Awah,” Kai cooed. “Okay, I got to get back to work. Tell Duri I love her, bye!!” Kai hung up, smiling like an idiot.
“Who was that?” Jeongin asked, surprised. Kai brushed hair behind her ear, smiling with the picture of Duri in her mind.
“My nanny, Felix. Found him yesterday.” Kai beamed. Jeongin nodded, before eyes widening.
“Nanny? You have a child?”
“Yeah, Duri.” Kai showed him some (her entire gallery) to Jeongin, all of Duri. “She’s two, had her when I was nineteen.”
“Wow, I can’t believe you’re so young.” Jeongin muttered. “I’m not the youngest anymore! Woo!”
Kai laughed, before saying goodbye to Jeongin to go to clock back in. The rest of the day went by in a blur, and Kai could finally put her mind on something else other than her daughter. It was the first day of work since she had Duri, and it was especially hard for her.
Tumblr media
Entering her apartment complex, she sighed and rubbed her temples, already figuring out how to make it up to the neighbors. As much as she hated how he was so cocky, she didn’t want to be enemies.
...
Scratch that, she wanted to be enemies. It was three in the damn morning and metal music was reverberating through her apartment walls. Duri was screaming, tears running down her face and Kai had to get up in two hours. Kai was seething, hate was no small word for what Kai was thinking.
Storming up to apartment 3B, she all but broke down the door. The same stupid chipmunk face showed up (Pretty sure Chan said his name was Han, Kai thought), and Kai wanted so much as to wipe the smirk off his face. “Dude, what the actual fuck? Some people have jobs, y’know!”
“I have a job! This is my job!” He defended.
“What, making my toddler cry?” Kai poked back. He seemed almost remorseful.
“Look, I’m a music producer for some American countries, and my speakers for my music are broken unless I play it at full volume.” He told her, eyes filling up with guilt.
“You’re a music producer? Buy new speakers!” Kai replied, trying to get Duri to stop her wailing. “You’re making my daughter stay up, and I'm supposed to be asleep so I can wake up in two hours.”
“The thing is, I haven’t been getting paid...”
“Thats illegal, and none of my business. Turn off the music, or I’m calling the police.” Kai glared at him.
“I feel like I’m being attacked,” Han mumbled. Kai took a threatening step towards him.
“You feel like you’re being attacked? I’ll show you attacked,” She cocked her head to the side, raising her fist. Han squeaks, hiding his body behind the door.
“I’m sorry, I’ll buy new speakers.”
“Good, because if I have to come up here one more time, there will be a problem.”
Tumblr media
“Dude, you look like dogshit,” Jeongin said to her as Kai pulled up to the table. He wasn’t wrong, her normal tan complexion was pale from the lack of sleep.
“Tell me about it, I only got an hour of sleep thanks to my neighbor keeping my daughter awake till three am, and then it took her another hour to fall asleep.” Kai griped, eating the leftover kimbap by stuffing it in her mouth in one go. Jeongin ate in a similar fashion to her, like this was their last meal ever.
“Why was he keeping you up that late,” Jeongin wiggled his eyebrows at the innuendo. Kai glared at him, causing him to reel back.
“As much as I wish I was dicked down, I would rather die than be friends with that asshole. He is this producer, right? He insists on playing music, full volume, in the middle of the god-damned night.” She inhales the rest of her food.
“Damn, I’m sorry. Here, what’s this guy's name? I might know him.”
“I’m pretty sure his name is Han. He looks like a little chipmunk, quokka thing.”
“... He’s one of my best friends.”
“Of course he is.” Kai sighed, exasperated. “Get the man new speakers, please.”
“Will do.”
Tumblr media
“Hey!!” Kai entered the lobby when Chan appeared, waving to Kai. She jumped slightly, eyes widening. Hand flung to her chest, heart beating quickly. Chan chuckled, a sheepish look on his handsome face.
“Sorry, hey,” he said, quickly walking up to Kai, a large smile taking his face by storm.
“Dude, did you want to give me a heart attack?” Kai asked incredulously.
“Sorry, again. But whatever you said to Han worked. He wants to make it up to you, and since it’s Friday, you can come hang out with us. It’s just going to be a lowkey hangout with five others.” He offered.
“I mean, I would have to bring my daughter, if that’s alright.” Kai raised an eyebrow. She didn't have friends yet, so what’s the harm in hanging out with eight strange men? Her danger instinct hadn’t gone off, so it could be safe.
“Perfect! We love kids!” He offered too quickly, before his face paled. “Not like that. I mean, we love how playful they can be-”
Kai cut Chan off with a laugh. “It’s fine. What time?”
“In three hours. You know where we live, so I expect you there.” He winked, making Kai laugh again. She nodded.
“See you tonight, Chan.”
Tumblr media
When Kai knocked on the door, the six loud voices quieted. Kai tried to find her most comfortable, yet fashionable clothes that didn’t scream “almond mom.” She settled on a fitted black t-shirt and baggy, ripped jeans. She styled her black hair up into a ponytail and hid her eye bags up with makeup. Duri was dressed up in a little onesie and she refused to let Kai take off and put on real clothes.
“Hey!” Chan opened the door, smiling widely. His suit was replaced with a comfortable, baggy shirt and jeans, his hair was swept back with a ball cap. He offered Kai a high five, and Duri followed suit after her mother. “Glad to see you too, little one.” Chan opened the door more.
“Hey guys, she’s here!” Chan called into the apartment, entering the main room with Kai following him in tow. She shyly smiled, waving while bouncing the toddler in her arms.
“This is my downstairs neighbor and her daughter, Kai, and Duri. Kai, these are my friends. You’ve met Han-”
“Sorry.” He smiled awkwardly.
“Regretfully.” Kai muttered, glaring at the older man.
“-and this is Hyunjin, Sungmin, Minho, and Jeongin.” Chan pointed to each person that corresponded with their names.
“Ms. Fei, nice to see you doing well,” Minho raised his glass, filled with an amber liquid, towards Kai. He was dressed casually, dress shirt and slacks replaced with jeans and a black t-shirt.
“Mr. Lee, you can call me Kai.” Kai offered, smiling as she let Duri down to stand behind her legs shyly.
“I will only if you call me Minho when I’m not acting as your boss.” He smiled back, matching her energy.
“Okay, Mr. Minho,” Kai teased, causing him to groan in an exasperated manner. Kai turned and bowed to the others that she didn’t know. Duri looked up at her mother, before imitating her stance.
“Kai!” Jeongin leapt up and offered her a side hug. “How’s my favorite coworker doing?”
“Yah! I’m right here!” Minho called after him as Jeongin led Kai to the couch so she could sit between Minho and him.
“You’re my boss, not my coworker.” Jeongin poked back, leaning back from the older man. Minho rolled his eyes, a smile pinching at his eyes. Kai snorted, arms wrapping around her daughter as she leaned back.
“So, Chan says you’re new to the building?” Hyunjin asked, trying to lighten the mood. Kai nodded, laughing slightly.
“More like new to the country. I used to live in the states two weeks ago.” Kai adjusted her posture.
“Really? But you’re so good with honorifics!” Jeongin’s eyes widened, teeth biting his lips.
“That’s what happens when your parents insisted on you taking ‘Korean classes’, or whatever my mom was teaching me. My mom is very traditional with her heritage, and my dad was more hands off, so I'm more in touch with my Korean side than my Chinese side. I still speak English and Chinese as much as I can though.” Kai absentmindedly rubbed circles into the warm back of her child.
“Ooh, say something in Chinese!” Han said excitedly, getting a bitter grin in return.
“傻屄,” Kai giggled. Han looked at her confused, Chan bursted out in laughter after Kai said what she said.
“What does that mean?” Kai smirked, shaking her head at his cluelessness.
“Chan, what did she say?” Kai looked at Chan with a nod.
“She called you stupid... ah C U N T.” Chan said, eyeing the very impressionable child. Kai snorted at the look Han sported a look of dejectedness.
Kai felt guilt at her treatment of the man. “Sorry, I’m still a teeny bit mad that you played Metal music at three in the morning.” She emphasized.
“Can we start over? Be adults about the situation?” Kai offered, holding out her hand for him to shake. Han nodded his head, shaking her hand. Kai smiled sweetly, before yanking his hand forward. Han let out a noise of surprise. “There, now we can start over.”
It was midnight when Kai finally left the apartment, high off the adrenaline of meeting new people. Duri was fast asleep, cradled into the arms of her mother when her phone pinged. A new chat group was formed with the guys she met earlier. She gave them her number, she remembered.
This was going to be fun

OCtober Day 1 - Journey
The faint sound of whispering was keeping Kirsten awake. She couldn't tell what the voices were saying, but it was growing irritating. At some point, Kristen was able to fall asleep despite the soft voices near her, but the sound of laughter pulled her from the light sleep she was in immediately.
Kristen was more irritated than she had been before. She pushed herself off the ground so that she was sitting up, and opened her tired eyes. It wasn't long before she was on full alert. This… wasn't the place she had fallen asleep.
The surrounding area was a poorly blended gray. The ground she sat on was a lighter shade, and the material felt like nothing she had ever experienced before. Like if cloth had been turned to a near liquid form.
"Kole?" she called out cautiously.
The whispers ceased immediately. Kristen struggled to her feet, stumbling as she did. The ground was even worse to walk on. She wasn't sure if she could keep her balance.
"Ah, looks like we've finally found you."
Kristen stumbled once again as she quickly turned in the direction the voice came from. She was approached by a man taller than her. He had pitch black hair pulled back into a short ponytail. Kristen's expression hardened, and she prepared herself for the worst.
"Don't look so terrified, dear. We can't touch each other in this place. You're safe from me."
"Who are you? Where is "this place"? What…" the words died in Kristen's mouth as the man in front of her took a few steps forward.
"I've had many names over the years, but at the moment, I go by Slade." He took a deep bow. A twisted smile remained on his face as he slowly stood straight.
"This is absolutely adorable," he grinned. "You don't look threatening at all. What are you hiding?"
Kristen was stunned. "I… I'm not supposed to be threatening."
Slade hummed in response as he observed Kristen more closely.
"Get… get away from me," Kristen demanded. She took a step back, never taking her eyes off of Slade.
"Jedediah seems to think you are a threat. That's why I brought you here."
Kristen's eyes widened. "Jed… you… you work for him?"
"Of course. He doesn't know you're here, though."
"Where?" Kristen insisted once again.
Slade smirked at Kristen. "It's a very fun place," he replied in a singsong voice.
"It doesn't have a name. I discovered it a very long time ago - long before I ever came to this world. Its purpose doesn't matter much." A pause. "The purpose I've found for it is what truly matters."
Slade reached into his jacket slowly and removed a small brown drawstring bag. The contents clacked together softly as he opened it and reached inside to remove an orange stone. He turned it over in his gloved hand a few times before holding it out to Kristen.
"Here."
Kristen shook her head slowly. "I don't want that…"
Slade smiled. "Of course you do. It's your only way out of here."
Hesitation took hold of Kristen. She started to reach for the brightly colored stone, but something didn't feel right. After all, Slade admitted to bringing her here in the first place. Plus, he worked for Jedediah. It couldn't be good news.
Still… she didn't see any other option. Kristen slowly extended her arm to grab the stone from Slade's palm. It was warmer than she thought it would be. It felt nice. Too nice. Her hands stopped shaking and she felt calm. Safe. It was the most comfortable feeling she'd ever felt before.
She barely noticed Slade turn away from her. A very low growl began to sound from all directions, but Kristen felt unbothered. She wasn't alarmed at all.
"Ah, wonderful!" Slade laughed as he returned the bag to the pocket inside his jacket. "Now they know you're here!"
The growling began to increase in volume.
"Have fun, dear. Your journey is about to come to an end."

Chapter 6: Clubs are the bane of Kai's existence
Tumblr media
“Record your message after the beep”
“Hey mom, uh, I just wanted to call to hear your voice. It’s been, what, four years? Duri is doing well, she has friends! I saw Bo had gotten married, and Dad wasn’t doing the best. Sometimes...” There was a pregnant pause. “Forget I called, I’m sorry.”
Kai sighed, staring up at her living room ceiling, the night was young and still vibrant. Her friends were coming over in a few minutes for an overdue hangout (It wasn’t overdue, they all are just very clingy to each other). Kai sat up, pulling her hair into a sloppy ponytail that fell apart as quickly as it was assembled. She walked to her kitchen, setting out wine glasses, taking out the bottle of wine she had in her fridge, and filled one of the glasses to the brim with the red wine. She held the glass and started drinking the bitter liquid in thought.
The doorbell took her out of her trance, Kai downing the rest of the alcohol and then opening the door. A Felix shaped blob launched himself at her, causing a giggle to escape the young woman as she almost toppled over from the weight of another human. She stood up, hugging the sunshine tightly during the time the six other men filled her apartment.
They all looked like they were going to go out clubbing, which made Kai a little self-conscious at her white shirt and sweatpants. She thought they were just going to stay in. “Oh honey, what are you wearing?” Hyunjin gasped like she personally killed his grandmother. Kai rolled her eyes.
“I thought we were just going to stay in?” Kai mumbled, getting another gasp from the tall man.
“In this economy? No.”
“Exactly, in this economy. Why are you all dressed up? Whores, all of you. Can’t live without getting your dick wet?” Kai hummed, quirking up an eyebrow as she poured herself another glass of red wine.
“Nonono, you’re coming with us. When was the last time you were a whore for a night? You’re practically a virgin.” Hyunjin poked fun at her. Kai swatted his hands away from her playfully.
“Hey! I’ll have you know I pull more women than you have in your entire life, Hwang Hyunjin!” Kai whined. “I also have nothing to wear to a club. So, unless you want me to go in one of your guys’ slut-fits, I am not going.” Kai huffed, leaning away from Felix as he hugged her from behind as she talked to them.
“Good thing you are friends with a model,” Hyunjin pulled out a garment bag, smirking at Kai’s shocked face.
“Oh, you ARE a slut.” She swiped the bag, bending away from Felix to go change.
“You know just what to say to get to my heart, yeobo.”
Tumblr media
“I am NOT wearing this!!” Kai called from her bedroom. She stared at her reflection, turning and flushed from how much skin it actually showed.
It was a bodycon dress, if you could even call it a dress. It was separated as a two piece, the skirt coming to her mid-thigh, with cuts on her hips. Her top, which she would NEVER usually wear, was a tight fitted crop top with cuts to show her side boob and under Boob, with a zipper in the middle. Her back was completely exposed, showing the simple Mandarin character tattoo across her spine she got done a year ago. Her friends didn’t even know about it, it didn’t even come up in conversation.
“Awh, but why not- woah mama.” Jisung opened the door, before shamelessly staring at her. Kai’s face flushed, throwing her shoe at the chipmunk boy, getting a shriek in return.
“Knock next time! Pervert.” Kai scolded, before taking a deep breath and sticking her head out into the hallway. “I am not wearing this in public! It barely covers anything!” Kai looked up at the older man. “Hyunjin, where did you even get this?”
“From Paris fashion week. Please, I bet you’d look very good in it.” He begged, getting cussed out by the younger woman. She sighed and groaned dramatically, before stepping out and hiding her face with her hands. She didn’t hear a response, making her look up from her hands.
Felix was beet red, looking at the ceiling, Jeongin and Minho were looking bored, and the rest were shamelessly staring at her. “Take a picture, it’ll last longer.” Kai teased. Han pulled his phone out slowly and got a glare from the girl. “That wasn’t an invitation, Jisung.” He slowly put the phone down.
Kai sighed and slipped on her heels, gaining roughly enough height to be taller than Han. She giggled at his pout, running her hair through her hair. Kai hooked her arm with Hyunjin’s, throwing her head back to laugh at the remark Hyunjin made about her.
Changbin felt something flutter in his heart at the laugh she made. It was a warm, light sound, it reminded him of windchimes from how airy she sounded. Her giggles turned into scolds as Minho landed a swift smack on her ass. She pushed him, smirking as she chased after him, aiming for his own butt, yelling at him. Felix giggled, running after the two himself, and then a train was formed, running after the three.
Tumblr media
The club was loud, filled to the brim with rich people letting loose. Hyunjin had gotten them in due to his status as a Versace model, making Kai’s eyes bulge at the expensive menu of alcohol. She grew up upper middle class, and even this was way too expensive for her, and her family.
“Jesus, sixty bucks for a glass of whisky?? No wonder people say eat the rich...” Kai muttered to herself. She was sent with Han to get the group drinks, but the producer had gone to the bathroom after ordering his half. It was all going on Hyunjin’s tab anyway, but she still wanted to keep it cheap.
“Three glasses of whisky, please. Neat.” A deep voice came from behind her, and when she turned, she met the eye of a much taller, handsome guy. He had a friend with him, who was smirking down at Kai. She felt her hair stand on end, her stomach churning quickly.
“Who's the third one for?” Kai asked, looking at the two suspiciously. She tried to quell the sickness in her stomach, thinking that her gut was just making up random things.
“A very pretty woman who’s standing in front of us.” The second guy spoke. Kai cringed outwardly, stepping away from the two.
She turned her back to them, making her own order. She, of course, put it on Hyunjin’s tab. She was halfway through the seventh drink when she felt a hand land on her hip, gripping the flesh, Kai froze, feeling warm breath against her neck.
“Don’t ignore me.” He growled in her ear. The bartender looks at her, alarmed. Kai smiled at the bartender sweetly, before turning and shoving their order in their faces.
“I said, I’m not interested. Get lost, assholes.” She shoved them back, before making eye contact with Han. She gave him a look of alarm. He saw, before disappearing into the crowd. She was going to kill Han Jisung.
Her face got grabbed, cheeks squished together, before being shoved. The first guy had shoved her against the bar, getting a yelp from Kai at the sharp corner. The bartender had left, helping someone else with their drink. Coward.
“Do not talk to me like that, slut.” He drawled, before slapping her hard for her back talk. Before she could do anything, the guy was roughly shoved away, and the second guy got punched, getting knocked out cold.
Kai looked over at the scene, a crowd slowly forming around the three. She gasped in shock, before immediately running over to pull her friend off the guy so he didn't get a charge.
Changbin was shoving the creep towards the exit, yelling at him so quickly that Kai could barely understand him. She grabbed Changbin’s arm, making him pause. That was enough time for the guy to sneer, pushing backwards and almost shoving Changbin to the floor. Kai shrieked, trying to pull Changbin off the guy while Chan and Seungmin rushed the man, throwing punches at him.
The bouncer pushed through the crowd, shoving the four five men out of the club for disrupting the peace. Jeongin, who suddenly appeared, grabbed Kai’s arms, looking her over. “Are you okay?” He asked quickly, and the fear that filled her gut was replaced by a warm feeling.
“Yes, thank you.” She smiled sweetly, before something else was behind her smile. “Now, where’s Jisung?”
Jeongin’s eyebrows rose, suspicion setting in. “Over in the corner. Why...?”
“So I can beat a bitch.” And then she stormed off towards him.
Tumblr media
Kai sat at the bar, conversing with the bartender when a body slid up to the empty stool beside hers. She looked over and was soon amazed by the man’s beauty.
“Hello there,” Kai smirked, taking a sip of her martini. The guy smiled back, raising an eyebrow and turning his body towards her. “What’s your name?” she asked, folding her palms neatly over her crossed legs.
“Joon-Woo, you?” He ordered a vodka soda, getting the drink served to him.
“Kai, nice to meet you Joon-Woo,” she looked down at his attire. He stuck out like a sore thumb; fitted with designer suits and loafers, one might suggest this was more of just a pit stop. “Come here often?”
“Yep, that’s why I haven’t seen you before. What is a beautiful girl like you doing in this cesspool?” He turned his body towards hers, a smirk playing on his lips and matched her energy.
“My friend, Hyunjin, wanted me to get out. Right now, he has his tongue stuck down someone’s throat in a corner while our other friends grind on each other like common whores. So, that leaves me.” She motioned to the dance floor, where in fact, most of them were grinding on each other and Hyunjin was doing what she said down to the tee.
Joon-Woo's eyebrows shot up, and his jaw dropped. Kai snorted at his expression, giggling softly. “Told you.” She sipped the alcohol again, and Joon-Woo turned to her, seemingly disturbed.
The two talked for what seemed like hours until they were heavily intoxicated. Kai giggled at another one of his jokes, hand on his arm when he leaned in close to her. That seemed to sober her up quickly, and she pushed him back, him falling.
“What the fuck??” He yelled, coming close to her with an enraged expression. “You little cock tease-” A hand stopped him from grabbing her, and he was met with an army of five, fit guys.
“Step back from the lady,” Felix said lowly, and his voice was enough to scare the guy off. He turned to her one last time.
“You’ll regret that, slut.” And he was gone.
She stood up, looking up at her friends with an expression that said that she really wanted to go home. And that, she did. With the five traveling after her. They even helped her change into her pajamas, before tucking her in like they were her parents.

“Ugh,” Changbin groaned when he heard incessant knocking. He checked the time, and cursed when it read five in the morning. Getting up, he massaged his leg in the area where he forgot to take off his prothesis the night before.
He opened the door, seeing three strange people standing there. They looked oddly like Kai. “Hello?” His voice was still laden with sleep.
“Is this where Fei Kai lives?” The older man asked, him looking like one gust of wind could disintegrate him.
“Yeah? Why-” A groan sounded behind him, and Kai rounded the corner. She was clad in a sports bra and low riding pajama pants, yawning and rubbing her eyes.
“Changbin? Who’s at the door-” She cut herself off, staring wide eyed at the three that stood in her doorway.
“Hello, Kiki.” The woman smiled softly, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Mom?”

Chapter 5: Bloody Makeups
Tumblr media
Fei Kai never hated anyone. She didn’t even hate her parents, or Han for being a mild douchebag at times. The most anger she felt in her life was distaste, she always wanted to be the clear, level-headed person.
She didn’t know why she never felt the emotion. She could have sworn she felt angry when she was young, but that went away quickly. It felt as though something was missing from her, but no one ever thought it was bad. Her parents waved her off, her school age friends laughed at her when she brought them her worries. So, she decided that she was a person that didn’t need emotions for anger. From the age of twelve, she thought that it was normal for friends to have that one calm personality, and she was it. It was just a normal part of her life, that she didn’t even bring it up to her friends.
So maybe when she became a mother, did she suspect something was wrong. Her daughter felt so much emotion, so much anger that it scared Kai at time. She wouldn’t change her daughter for anything, though. Not even for her anger.
So why did she feel an unknown emotion bubble up within her in five months of hosting Seo Changbin? She felt odd, he just made her so warm in the wrong ways. His stupid smirk, stupid hair, stupid eyes. She wouldn’t let him get to her, though. She was mature enough to not let emotion rule her train of thought.
Tumblr media
Kai turned several times on the small pull-out couch, her mind not resting from the day. For the past five nights, Kai would get woken up in the middle of the night with yelling coming from the master bedroom, before quieting down. The first night, Kai would try and enter but the motherfucker locked the door every night. That's fine with her, he made it very clear that he didn’t want her help.
Kai sighed, her skin making everything sticky with sweat. She sighed one more time, before sitting up. She wasn’t going to get any sleep, so she might as well start working early on work. She opened her laptop and typed away, going to the wee hours of the morning.
Footsteps roused her from her fixation when she heard the new familiar clang of soft feet and plastic hitting her floor. Changbin had recently gotten a prosthetic leg, only a few weeks back, and Kai didn’t like how she got excited at the prospect of him walking. She was trying to not let the man rule her thoughts, but she couldn’t help it. Throughout her days, she could only think of him. Did he sleep enough? Did he eat? She blamed it on her mom brain, treating even the people closest to her like her children sometimes.
“What are you doing up?” Kai asked, eyes focusing on the blurry figure of the man before her vision cleared.
One thing that Kai didn’t like was how hot the man was waking up. Hair curly, glasses for the early morning, voice laden with sleep. She wanted to focus on her family, not the man who was basically sex on legs. She needed to focus, and not on her attraction to Changbin. It’ll pass (No it wouldn’t).
He chuffed, rolling his eyes before sitting on the far end of the couch, away from her. Kai’s stomach churned at the blatant closeness, but she ignored it to finish working. The couch was basically a love seat, and Kai could feel him take a breath next to her, the warm air making goose bumps pop up all over her body.
Changbin watched her work. Despite his ploy to hate her, he couldn’t deny that she was getting more beautiful as the days passed. Now that it was summer, her skin grew even more of a tan, highlighting how flawless it was. There wasn’t a wrinkle in sight, showing how young the woman was.
She had recently cut her long hair short and dyed it a light brown. She currently had it up in a ponytail, highlighting the expanse of her neck. He didn’t know if he wanted to bite it or throttle it. Stop being horny, Changbin thought to himself. He blamed it on not being around women for a while. Yeah, that was it.
“I could say the same thing to you,” Changbin shot back, voice dripping with venom. Kai rolled her eyes once more, reaching to put her headphones on. Today was the first day on Duri’s summer camp, so five more weeks of dealing with the monster called Seo Changbin alone felt like it was going to take forever. She couldn’t believe she was actually looking forward to being left alone with a man. Gross.
She put on her headphones, blasting a rap song to try and tune him out, bobbing her head along to the beat.
---
When a few hours passed, and Kai finally sent the paperwork to the insurance company, she shut her laptop and stretched, a yawn falling from her lips. She set her headphones down and looked around at the oddly quiet apartment. Her eyebrows shot up in suspicion, padding through the apartment to try and look for the man. When she couldn’t find him, she let out a sigh of relief.
She entered the bathroom, not bothering to close the door fully while she stripped to cool her body off. She entered her shower, turning the knob as cool as it went and sighed at the good temperature.
She hummed, not hearing the footsteps stepping towards the bathroom.
Changbin was listening to some tunes, blasting through his own headphones. He had just gotten back from the gym, all sweaty and overwhelmed with the heat. He grew confused at the door ajar, and when he opened the door, his face grew hot, and his eyes widened.
It was the worst time to realize the door to the shower was glass.
The two made eye contact, Kai letting out a shriek and Changbin stepping out, adverting his eyes and he slammed the door shut. Kai immediately shut the shower off, wrapping herself in a towel, as she felt the stupid churning of her stomach again. She was mortified.
Tumblr media
It had been days since the incident, and they had yet to speak a word to each other. Every time they were in the same room, Kai would immediately leave with a heavy blush on her face with embarrassment. She was quieter at work too, not going unnoticed by her coworkers.
Changbin felt guilty. This wasn’t the reaction he wanted from her, and he felt as if he ruined his chances to get a rise out of her. But Changbin being Changbin, he wasn’t about to give up.
“Seungmin?” Changbin asked, gaining a hum from the younger male. They were hanging out on their own, the rest of the group either at work or on a grocery run. “What is the best way to piss someone off?”
“Are you still on the Kai drama? Dude, it’s been months, just drop it.” Seungmin groaned, laying on his back. “You need a hobby, or a girlfriend. Or both.”
“No, like listen to me. She has never gotten angry at all. All she does is stare at me, ignore me, or apologize. It’s not about me disliking her now, I’m genuinely curious if she never gets angry.”
“Oh my god, if I help you, will you shut up about it?” Changbin nods at his words. “Okay, first you want to...”
---
Kai yawned as she entered her apartment, rubbing her tired eyes and turning on the light. The apartment was quiet, which was a nice change from the yelling of her friends. What she didn’t expect, however, was the body on her floor with red liquid pooling around it.
Kai leaned against the counter, watching as his chest rose steadily even when he tried to hide it. Kai rolled her eyes, a smirk playing on her lips. “I know you’re playing, get off the damn floor and clean up the mess.”
Changbin’s head snapped up, a pout evident. “How did you know it was a prank?”
“One, you’re breathing. A person who lost that much blood wouldn't be breathing or not as tan as you are right now. Two, blood is not bright red. It’s darker than that.” She walked over, scooping the liquid with her ring and middle fingers. “Clean it up, it’s your mess. You’re a big boy.”
Changbin groaned, looking at the playful twinkle in her eye, thinking the ruffling in his stomach was just discomfort from being around her for so long. She was smart, he’ll give her that. Maybe he had to up the stakes a bit. Although, he didn’t mind the decent conversations they had.
Tumblr media
He had done everything he could in three days to piss her off. From throwing her clean laundry in the mud, to making her late to work, to even trying to get her fired, he was at a loss. That was until he thought of something.
He tucked his protheses under his bed after he was sure Kai had gone to bed. He willed himself to sleep, but he left the door open for an experiment.
He was in the middle of the desert. Him and his buddy Ha-Joon were on a mission to transfer high grade military explosives. Changbin thought it would be a good idea to joke around with the missiles, before accidentally stepping on a land mine. They were both warned of the mines that had yet to be picked up from the area, and Ha-Joon was very diligent in this.
The two went flying, Ha-Joon had landed on the pack of explosives, blowing himself up and the bottom of Changbin’s leg.
Usually, he would be waking up at this time, but he willed himself to stay asleep.
He was in the desert for ten minutes, bleeding out and looking at the mangled body of the man that had become his best friend.
There were hands trying to wake him, gripping his hands as he sunk his nails into soft, warm flesh. He knew it wasn’t his own, due to the lack of pain. He felt blood trickle down his arms, but the hands hadn’t moved.
“Changbin,” A voice called to him. “You’re safe. You’re not there.” Her voice was like a siren.
Soon, his eyes snapped open, and the worried look of Kai peered down at him.
Changbin sneered, pushing her away from him. “What are you doing here?”
Kai stared at him incredulously, blood trickling down and dripping on the light wood. The gall of this man.
Kai took a deep breath, lips flitting through her teeth as she bit her bottom lip. “You were screaming, I was worried.”
“Yeah, well save your feelings for someone who cares. It’s not like I actually want you to help me, I’d rather get help from a trash can. Well, close enough I guess.”
Kai didn’t know why she stayed; she would usually leave after he spat his piece. Her eyes narrowed in mock scrutiny. “Why are you being like this? This is my home, and I’m letting you stay here. Why are you being an ass?”
Changbin kept his shock in check. It was the first time she called him out on his bullshit in the five months they lived in the same vicinity to each other. He played up the snarl on his face.
“Well maybe you deserve it. You’re like a robot, and I don’t like robots.” He crossed his arms. Kai could laugh from his audacity.
And she did, she laughed at the shock of it all. “Are you joking? You must be joking, because I cannot believe anyone would go this far. You know, I’m done helping you. Scream and cry at me, I’m done being bullied.”
She turned to leave, before stopping cold at his next words. He didn’t know why he said what he did next.
“What kind of mother doesn’t want to stand up for herself?” It was more of a statement than a question. “Aren’t you supposed to be setting up an example for your daughter?”
Kai slowly turned to look at the man, eyes wide as she felt an unfamiliar feeling boil up within her. Her face went red, and her eyes filled with tears. Not tears of sadness but was met with ones from an ugly emotion.
“Don’t you dare bring my daughter into this. I thought you were just being a dick because you lost your leg. But now I see that you are just a plain asshole, Seo Changbin. You really are a piece of work.” She turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door and making the apartment rattle.
Changbin released the breath he was holding, but when he should've felt happiness from successfully making her mad, he only felt regret. He looked up at the ceiling, flinching when he heard drywall and glass break, hearing her anger-filled scream and then silence following.
It was time to apologize. For everything.
---
Kai sat at the kitchen island, angry tears flying down her face as she stared at her bloody and shaking hands. Why did she have to feel this way? She knew there were other emotions behind what she now knew what anger was. Was it sadness? No, it felt deeper than that.
She couldn’t stop the sobs that racked her body, hands flying to wipe away the tears before she winced at the sting of blood in her eyes. She shook out of it when she felt a hand grip on her wrist. She looked up, disappointment making her expression heavy.
“Get off of me,” Kai mumbled, but not making a move to shake him off.
He stayed silent, dropping the first aid onto the counter and taking out gauze. The two were hushed, Changbin focusing on wrapping her hands (after cleaning them) with the clean roll of gauze.
“’m sorry. For everything.” He mumbled.
“Why do you hate me? What have I done to be treated like shit?” She pleaded, tears filling her eyes once again.
Changbin sighed, rubbing his temples. “At first, I thought I hated you for taking my place in the group. Then, I thought I hated you for being so perfect-”
Kai snorted. “You think I’m perfect?”
Changbin nudged her shoulder, a playful glint in his eye. “Focus.” She let out a giggle, before nodding. “I think I was just jealous of you? But then, I got curious. I had never saw you angry, so I made a game to myself to get you angry.”
Kai chuckled and shook her head. “You’re special, you know that?”
“Special good or special bad?”
“I’ll let you know if we start over”
“Deal,” Changbin shook her hand, and then let his eyes widen when she winced at the pain. “I’m so sorry.”
Kai laughed softly, and Changbin realized he wanted to hear only that sound for the rest of his life.
Tumblr media
Chan sat with Felix and Hyunjin as they watched Changbin and Kai play pool the next day. It was late at night, and the younger was positively radiating excited energy. “They finally made up.”
Felix hummed, looking at the two actually get along for the first time. “I give it a few weeks until they start fighting again.”
“I don't know, lix.” Hyunjin hummed, watching the way they played around with each other. It was like they had been friends for years, not the short time they began to know each other. “They seem awfully close.”
“I give it a few weeks,” Minho mentioned, head tilting. Hyunjin jumped from the sudden appearance of the older man.
“Few weeks for what, Min?” Felix asked the veterinarian.
“Until they finally realize their feelings for each other.”
“They were at each other’s throats two days ago. I doubt they feel anything other than platonic feelings.” Chan muttered.
But Lee Minho was always right about these things.

Chapter 7: Mother dearest
Tumblr media
“Mom?” Kai asked, eyes widening slightly as her mouth dropped a little.
“Kai!” She cheered, rushing forward and hugging the woman. Kai didn’t hug back, hell, her body even stiffened. The woman pouted childishly, pulling back from Kai. “You know how long we had to find you? My baby, not talking to her mother in four years! Are you trying to hurt my feelings?”
“Mom-” She was cut off by the landline ringing, and she had to wrangle herself from her mother’s arms, going to answer it. Kai’s mother protested, and it reminded Changbin of those kids that threw a tantrum of they didn’t get the correct candy.
“Hello?... Yes, this is her.... What?!” Kai shouted suddenly, Changbin rushed over to figure out what was happening, Kai’s mouth open in shock. “Okay, I’ll be right there. She hung up, grabbing a zip up and keys, dashing out the door. Changbin’s eyes widened as he was left home alone with Kai’s family.
Eyes turned to him, expectantly, and he gulped. “You guys like tea?”
Tumblr media
“My baby,” Kai held Duri, who lay on a hospital bed. Duri groaned, trying to push away her mother’s hands but Kai was stronger than she looked. Duri gave up after a few tries, eye twitching as Kai looked over her once more.
“Mom, it was just a fall. I’m fine.” Duri tried to comfort her mother, like she had done this before.
“’just a fall’, she says. Honey, you have a concussion!” Kai scolded. “After the doctor comes by, we are going home. That camo should’ve called me-”
“Mommy.” Duri said sternly, making the older woman pause. “I’m fine. I just want to go home.”
“Of course, baby.” Kai kissed her daughter’s head, getting a hum from the girl. A knock sounded at the door, and Kai stood immediately, bowing to the doctor who opened the door.
Tumblr media
“Can we have Gyeran bap for breakfast?” Duri asked when Kai turned the handle for the apartment.
“Probably. Let me ask Changbin if he would be down.” Kai commented, opening the door and unzipping her zip up.
“Duri!” Her mother’s voice snapped Kai out of it, and she remembered who was exactly there. Changbin seemed visibly relieved to see Kai, sat in between her mother and her brother.
Duri blankly stared at the older woman before hiding behind her, head peeking out from her mother’s legs. Kai frowned, kneeling to help Duri slide off her shoes, followed by her own. Kai’s mother frowned, pouting yet again. Her father set a hand on his wife’s shoulder, speaking to her lowly in Mandarin.
“Hye-Jin, she was young when she left. She probably doesn’t remember you,” and that sentence made her pout more.
“Mom? Who are those people?” Duri asked, pointing to her grandparents. Hye-Jin audibly gasped, it was as if you had just stabbed her dog.
“Kai-ah, you didn’t tell our granddaughter about us?” Bo, her brother, frowned, but it seemed like he was just putting on a facade in front of Changbin.
“Bin, what do you think of Gyeran Bap for breakfast?” Kai ignored her uninvited guests. Changbin nodded, standing up to go into the kitchen with the two women. Duri yelled happily when she saw Changbin, running to greet him and hug the man. Changbin smiled, before picking up the child, sitting her on the counter. Kai moved to start rinsing her rice.
Kai’s wrist was grabbed by Bo, who sneered. “Don’t ignore us, Kai.” Kai glared up at her older brother.
“You came here, uninvited. I have every right to kick you guys out, so count your blessings that I haven’t done it yet.” She tugged her wrist back, pushing her attention back to rinsing her rice.
“Changbin-ah, this is what she does!” Hye-Jin wailed, making Kai stiffen. “She treats us like dirt, and doesn’t even let me see my grandbaby. What a horrible daughter she is!”
Kai sighed, trying to ignore her mother as Changbin looked taken aback. Her father started to agree, making Kai roll her eyes. “Don’t you guys have a hotel to get to? My apartment isn’t fit to hold seven people.” Kai lied through her teeth.
Her father agreed, making Hye-Jin whine again. “Fine, have fun with your boyfriend.” Hye-Jin grumbled, making Kai turn to her mother with a glare.
“He’s not my boyfriend!” She shouted at her mother. “Get out!” The three left soon after, Bo giving her the stink eye as they left. Kai breathed through her nose heavily, trying to ignore the way her chest fluttered when her mother called Changbin her boyfriend.
She grabbed an egg, cracking it harshly on the pan. She held the spatula with shaking hands, still breathing heavily. She was so in her head that she almost jumped when a hand encapsulated her own.
“Kai,” Changbin muttered in her ear, making her melt a little. “Calm down, yeah?” Kai sighed, relaxing against her roommate, and nodded. She blamed her face growing red from the heat of the steam of the frying eggs. “Want to talk about it?”
Kai shook her head, before plating up the food for Duri. She started to plate up Changbin’s food, before turning the stove off. She slipped away from Changbin and kissed her daughter’s head.
“Mommy? What about you?” Duri asked when Kai padded down the hallway. Kai turned to her daughter and smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“I’m not hungry.” She said, before entering her small studio, shutting the door softly. Her stomach disagreed with her, but she didn’t want to let them worry about her.
Tumblr media
Kai groaned when her curtains to the studio were ripped open, making Kai groan. It had been days since she left the studio, and Changbin was getting sick of it. But he decided to get Minho to do it, not daring to ruin the peace the two had finally gotten.
“Get up,” Minho told her, hands on his hips.
“Get out, Minho.” Kai groaned, turning to get away from the light. What she didn’t account for was his stubbornness. She shrieked when he picked her up, taking her to her shower and dumping her in the water.
Kai gasped, feeling the freezing water run down her body. Her mind raced a mile a minute, before settling on that one memory from her childhood that she seemed to have forgotten.
Kai screamed when Bo trapped her under the freezing water. They were visiting her grandparents in Korea during the winter, and they had lived by a body of water. Kai gulped down the water, coughing and spluttering when he hadn’t let up, water flowing into her lungs.
She went rigid, letting her hair fall forward when it got too heavy on her head. Minho paused, looking at Kai in a state of curiosity.
Tumblr media
Changbin came running at the sound of a thud, the food he was cooking long forgotten. He looked at the scene in front of him, eyes widening in shock. Minho sat on the ground, hand caressing his cheek where Kai had slapped him. Kai was heavily breathing, tears welling up in her eyes as she rushed out of the stream of water and slamming the door to the studio.
After Changbin had given Minho a bag of ice to hold to his cheek, he came storming into the studio, the door opening with another slam. Her neighbours will be complaining to the landlord about this.
“What the hell is your problem?” He yelled at her, not noticing the way her eyes were red from crying. Hell, the tears were still flowing down her cheeks when he barged in. “You hole yourself up in the studio for days, leave raising your kid to me, and then slapping Minho when he tried to help you?”
“My health is nothing of concern!” Kai yelled back, standing up. “Not after the stunt you pulled a few days ago!”
“What? With your parents?” He huffed, exasperated. “They were plenty decent to me! Now I’m believing that your mother was right!”
Silence followed. Kai stared at him like he grew two heads, before a small sob left her lips. She crumpled to the ground, a faraway look behind her eyes. Changbin rolled his eyes, before growing increasingly worried when she stared into the distance.
“Kai, I-”
“Get out.” Kai said sternly. Changbin’s eyes widened, not moving until Kai looked up at him, a look that would’ve rivaled Minho’s. “Get. Out.”
He followed her instructions quickly, not wanting to anger her more.
Tumblr media
“That’s what happened,” Changbin sighed to his friends, recounting the fight the two had. Jeongin stood up, his face filling with a rage that many would not have seen on the young man.
“Hyung, you are so stupid.” He started, shaking his head twice. “She hasn’t told you about her parents, has she?”
Changbin looked at the younger guy, face contorted in visible confusion. He shook his head, making Jeongin sigh, rubbing his temples. “It’s not my story to tell, but I’m going to comfort the girl you upset.” He glared at Changbin, before leaving to comfort his friend.
Changbin stared dumbfounded at the youngest, thoughts running through his head. He groaned, setting his head in his hands. “I messed things up again, haven't I?”
“Yep,” A collective agreement came from the group. His jaw fell open, Han laughing at his friend’s unfortunate circumstance.
Tumblr media
“Men are so dumb,” Jeongin said to Duri as he got Kai’s favorite sweet, a new-York style cheesecake. “Stay your age forever, life only gets harder.”
Kai slapped her friend’s arm, reassuring a confused six-year-old. “Don’t mind him, jagi.” She leaned over and kissed her daughter’s head, confusing the child more.
Changbin popped his head in the doorway, a guilt ridden look on his face. Kai groaned, and Jeongin sighed. “C’mon girl, let's go to the park. You can tell me all the shit you have on your classmates.” He picked her up, passing by Changbin and looking at him with a look.
“Don’t corrupt my daughter!” Kai yelled after the two.
“You’re no fun!” Jeongin called back, and then the front door closed. The two roommates stared at each other, before Changbin spoke first.
“I’m sorry. For everything.” He said softly, and Kai nodded. He stepped forward, head tilting in confusion when she turned away from him, a frown etched on her features.
“I know. But it still hurt.” Kai whispered, setting the now-empty dish into the sink to start washing it. “Do you know how bad it hurts to hear someone you consider a friend agree with your mother of all things?”
“If I may ask, why are you so against your parents?” Changbin came up beside her, hand on the small of her back. Kai sighed, running her wet hands through her hair, the strands sticking to her hands.
“I think it would be better if I told you over wine.”
Tumblr media
“Okay, where to start...” Kai sighed. “My parents never wanted me. They hadn’t said it to me directly, but I know what It’s like. They never said I love you to me, never cared for me.” She crossed her legs, leaning against her cushion, staring off into the distance. She held the glass of wine in her hands, taking occasional sips.
Changbin sat opposite her, eyebrows furrowed. His parents had passed a few years ago, his sister too busy with her own family to pay attention to him. But he grew up in a stable environment, not understanding what it was like not having a good relationship with parents.
“My parents always took my brother’s side. He was ten years older than me, but he still would act like a child. He was jealous that I took our parents attention, so he made my life a living hell.” Kai played with the fray of her old shirt. “My parents would scold me for trying to fight back, and it didn’t matter what I did. Hell, I even graduated two years older for them to even say they were proud of me.” She spat hatefully, chugging back the red liquid.
“When I was... seven, I think. My brother found me extra annoying that day, and he took a butter knife,” She made a stabbing motion on her sternum, pulling to shirt’s neckline to reveal a faint scar. “He stabbed me, fracturing my bone. I'm lucky he didn’t hit anything important, though. My maternal grandmother took me to the hospital because my parents were too busy fawning over my brother to notice their other child.”
Changbin looked like he was going to murder someone, making Kai take his hands softly. “Don’t worry, Bin. I’m... coping.”
Changbin leaned over, hugging her to his chest tightly. “I’m so sorry, Kai.” He mumbled, feeling like he was going to cry. “I shouldn’t have invited them in.”
Kai snorted. “Bin,” she said, making him hum in acknowledgment. “It’s not your fault my family fucking sucks.”
Changbin pulled back. “I say we invite them to dinner,” he held up a palm when Kai went to speak. “We show them that you are way better than them. We invite the rest of the guys, and we show them that you have not thought of them once.” Kai broke out laughing, before nodding.
“Okay, sounds like a plan.” She stood up, grabbing the empty glass and kissing his cheek without thinking twice about it. She turned and left, leaving a frozen Changbin on the couch. Kai hummed happily, washing the glasses with care.
Kai felt ten times lighter, and Changbin couldn’t ignore the way that he wanted to kiss her.

Chapter 1: Before, time was rough and unfortunate
Tumblr media
Kai remembered the feeling of being alone. The emptiness, the void of emotions. It was like she was an imposter in her land. Her parents loved her, yes, but she could tell the love was an obligation. They only wanted one child, a boy, and they got him. So why did she have to come into the picture?
Sure, Kai hadn't always felt this way. The hollowness. But as she grew, watching her brother get achievement after achievement while she could barely pass her geometry exams, she felt that they were on their last nerve.
Even her graduating at sixteen, her starting college with getting her bachelor's in veterinary sciences. She even had a part time job, saving every penny that she could. Everything that she could do to please her parents, she did. That didn't seem to please her parents, but they lost their mind when her brother, Bo, broke up with his longtime girlfriend. They congratulated him.
So, she moved. She moved from the cozy covers of her twin sized bed with her BS in Veterinary sciences to South Korea.
Oh, she also couldn't forget one teeny tiny important detail. Her daughter.
It was an accident. She was nineteen, and while going out to parties, she slept with two men. She didn't remember their faces, or names, but she got one little reminder. A sweet little toddler by the name of Duri, who was the light of her life.
Kai was surprised at her parents' reactions they had; or lack thereof. Indifference, total indifference was their response. Kai realized at this point that she could never please or shock her parents. So, at twenty-one years old, she moved her life to South Korea. If they didn't care enough to have emotions for their daughter, then they don't need to see their granddaughter.
"Okay Duri, help me find a job," Kai mumbled, looking at the blurry screen of her laptop. It was ten at night, and both the girls were heavily tired.
Duri yawned, before falling asleep in her mother's arms. Kai yawned as well, before closing the laptop and curling in her bed, in the most sketch apartment she could get her hands on. The bed didn't even have any sheets on it, besides a fluffy blanket.
Her rest would have to wait when the apartment above her was playing loud, EDM music. Kai huffed, trying to phase out the noise. They seemed to turn it up, apparently. So they wanted a death wish.
Duri started crying, making Kai groan. "C'mon sweet girl..." She muttered, making Duri cry harder. She pounded on the ceiling, and she was convinced she might've pounded a whole through the ceiling with how weak it was.
They didn't seem to take the hint, as they turned it up even louder. Kai groaned, grabbing her keys and putting Duri in her shoulder cloth wrap. She was thankful that she still fit inside, after all.
It didn't take long to find the offending apartment, as the music got louder when she reached the top step. Reaching the door that read 3B, she started pounding on the door.
Music reached a halt, as she heard grumbling through the door. A man, roughly her age, opened the door. He was barely older than her, maybe a year or two older, with cheeks that resembled a chipmunk.
"Can you turn that down?!" Kai whisper-yelled, patting Duri's head as she finally started going to sleep. "If you haven't noticed, it's ten at night and I've been trying to sleep."
"Grandmother," He snickered and took Kai by surprise. "Who goes to sleep this early?"
"Someone with a toddler. Do you know how hard it is getting a toddler back to sleep when she wakes up from god-awful EDM music?" She sighed, Duri shifting uncomfortably.
"Hey! I made that god-awful EDM music!" He gasped like Kai had stabbed him. Kai heard shuffling in the background, and Duri stirred again.
"Whatever it is, please keep it down. My daughter and I need to sleep." Kai pleaded. Her neighbor thought for a second, before smirking.
"No," He answered, before slamming the door in her face, making Duri start crying. Kai groaned, muttering obscenities towards the man. The stupid music started playing, loud and obnoxious.
Kai, on the verge of tears, made the trek to her apartment, trying to soothe the crying toddler. She locked the door behind her, laying on her bed while she and Duri cried together, Duri from being woken up and Kai from the overwhelming pressure of now being a single mother.
Tumblr media
"Who was that?" Chan asked, pouring another cup of water for himself. Han rolled his eyes.
"Some woman wanted us to turn down the music by insulting it. She was pissed, it was pretty funny." Han giggled to himself.
Chan gave him a disappointing glare, before shaking his head. "You are a douchebag, dude." He sighed, making Han shrug.
"Eh, she shouldn't have had her baby with her, then." Silence followed his sentence, being overrun by the music. Chan smacked him on the back of the head.
"You are an asshole."
Tumblr media
Morning came too quickly for Kai, as her alarm clock wanted food. Kai groaned, the feeling of little hands on her face overwhelming her senses. "Okay baby, let's get you some breakfast," Kai yawned, trudging the three feet to her kitchenette and fridge.
She grabbed a jar of baby food, Duri running around while excitedly yelling for her breakfast.
Kai giggled, sitting down and pulling her daughter with her. Her daughter, however calm and sweet she was normally, was a menace when she ate. Kai had food all over herself, and she didn't have time to clean up when a knock sounded at the door.
Kai groaned, sitting up and looking at her now-ruined white shirt. She picked up Duri, who was giggling wildly, and trudged to the door. She opened it, and a hot man was at her doorstep. He was buff, almost straining out of the suit he had. It made her mouth water.
"Hello, I'm Chan," He smiled kindly, Duri making small babble talk with the man. "I'm your upstairs neighbor. "
All attractions were lost.
Kai glared up at the man. "Tell your roommate that he is an asshole." Duri screamed happily at the word, repeating the word several times.
Chan laughed, shaking his head. "He knows, his name is Han by the way. He was in some weird mood yesterday and was even more of an... erm... pain? Then normal." Chan eyed Duri, who was busy trying to get out of her mother's arms.
"Well tell him that if he's going to play that music again at ten in the evening, I'm going up there and beating his butt." Kai seethed, making Chan laugh again. Kai was being serious, though.
"I'll be sure to tell him that." He nodded, before waving goodbye. "I have to get to work. Again, I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. My other roommates are a handful, so there may be-"
"-loud, headache inducing noises?" Kai tried, and Chan nodded. Duri waved at the man, saying a baby version of 'goodbye' and Kai closed her door.
Tumblr media
"Okay Duri, let's hope these veterinarians don't mind a two-year-old." Kai muttered, clad in her nicest interview clothes. A tucked in blouse to a pencil skirt, she looked like she was going to her 9-5.
Duri cheered, dressed in her nicest dress. Kai was lucky she found this ad when she did, buried in the other job listings. It was dated from a month ago and when Kai called, the position was still open.
Walking into the clinic, she was met with a cold stare of a veterinarian. He was about six inches taller than Kai's short, 160 cm (about half the height of a regulation basketball hoop) stature.
"Hello," Kai bowed, Duri looking at her mother confused. "I'm here for the Veterinary assistant position." She said it more like a question.
"Come with me," He beckoned, turning his gaze to the back doors. Kai followed him immediately, Duri holding her mother's hand as she struggled to keep up with the pace.
"I see you brought a child to your interview, highly unprofessional." Oh, so he was the blunt type. Kai sputtered, embarrassed.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Lee. I just moved to South Korea, I have no family and I don't have enough money to put her in a daycare. I can't just leave her at home, I'm so sorry." She pleaded, bowing and clapping her hands in a plea of forgiveness.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's okay, I just wish you would've notified us. You don't have her father to look after her?"
"Her father isn't in her life," Kai sat down across from him, placing Duri on her lap. Boba eyes stared into her interviewers' eyes.
He nodded, before starting the interview. Duri sat patiently and quietly when they were talking as she played with her mother's earring gently.
After half an hour of questions, he stood up, prompting Kai to stand as well. He had an unreadable expression, making Kai nervous.
"How soon can you start?" His response brought a grin to Kai's face, him giving her a small smile.
"Tomorrow?" Kai offered, making him laugh slightly.
"Tomorrow works," He shook her hand. Kai left the clinic that day, giddy as ever. She was going to prove her parents wrong.
She was going to make her life worth living.

Chapter 4: Changbin's hate pact
Tumblr media
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Choi.” Kai bowed to the kindergarten teacher. “I’m so sorry for being late.” She stood up straight, eyebrows creasing in worry and trying to ignore the way she felt like she wanted to vomit. Her head still felt like it was being split open from the fall earlier.
“Aish,” Choi Da-eun, Duri’s kindergarten teacher, waved off the younger woman’s concern with a comforting hand on her shoulder. Mrs. Choi was a kind lady, and Kai was thankful for the older woman for being so understanding of her situation. “Don’t worry about it, Ms. Fei. Duri was a delight, despite her anxiousness to get home. Don’t make it a habit, though.” Mrs. Choi threatened playfully, getting a giggle from the younger woman.
Duri took Kai’s hand and walked to their apartment, Kai explaining along the way that there is a guest and should not be bothered. “I’ll make your favorite tonight.” Kai buzzed herself into her apartment, it being more silent than the usual clang of the boys’ apartment next door.
“Jjajangmyeon? With the spicy Kimchi you made the other night?” The six-year-old suddenly perked up, a smile playing on her dimpled features. Kai smiled back, ruffling her daughter’s hair.
“Of course, baby. Now go start your schoolwork, I have to start the food.” Kai kissed her daughter’s forehead, and she slid towards the desk. Kai watched her fondly, before getting out the necessary details.
Kai hummed along to a song in her head, draining the black beans she had gotten from the market the day before. She felt her head swim with dizziness, making her lean against the counter for support. She shook her head, before calling out to her daughter.
“Hey jagi?” Duri turned to acknowledge her mother. “Wanna go to your Imobu’s apartment and ask to borrow his chamgireum? I forgot to buy some earlier.” Kai smiled at her daughter, who nodded and rushed out to go to the four boys’ apartment. She slumped against the counter, breathing heavily as she willed her vision to stop swimming.
~
“Eat up, baby.” Kai kissed her daughter’s head, who smiled up at her with her mouth full of food. Kai snorted, ruffling her hair before grabbing a tray and began to fill up the tray with the different foods.
Padding into the closed room softly, her eyes were trained on the lump of covers, a soft snore filling the room. Kai set the tray of food on the nightstand carefully, setting a note on the tray so he could read it when he woke up.
Tumblr media
It was dark when Changbin woke up, and he groaned at the ache in his left leg. He sat up, reaching for the lamp on the nightstand. Light flooded the room, and his eyes flitted to the tray of food on the same nightstand. His stomach growled loudly at the spread, before picking up the note that held dainty handwriting.
Sorry for startling you earlier, it wasn’t my place. I made Jjajangmyeon with kimchi today, and I didn’t know what drink you liked so I just got you a bottle of water. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Changbin bit his lip, eyes furrowing in confusion at her note, before setting it back down and carefully balancing the tray on his lap. The moment he took a bite, his eyes widened. Shit, he thought, why is this so good?
He set the empty tray on the nightstand five minutes later, leaning back in content. A small frown played on his handsome features, replaying that moment in his head. She had looked so frightened when he pushed her, and now regret tugged at his heart.
He wasn't able to finish thinking when his door creaked open, and a six-year-old popped her head into the room. Her hair was damp from the shower she just took, her pig pajamas decorated her small body.
Her mouth stretched across her small face, her eyes crinkling as she waved. She walked up to the side of the bed, boba eyes peering up at him over the edge of the bed.
“Hi?” Changbin’s voice was scratchy, and the kid’s smile grew. She stood on her tip toes, offering her hand.
“I’m Duri,” She stated. He took her small hand, soft in his rough ones.
“Changbin.” He shook her hand firmly. Duri took it as her chance to hop up onto the bed, legs crossing as she stared into his soul.
Kai groaned as she finished cleaning the bathroom from Duri’s explosive shower. How much color does a six-year-old need? Entering the hallway, Kai paused when she saw the door cracked open to the master bedroom. Her heart dropped, feet carrying her to the door before she paused.
“And then what did Uncle Lix do?” Duri’s voice was familiar to her ears. She heard a giggle, but it wasn’t her daughter’s.
“He called yoghurt some fruit, and Chan was confused about the whole thing.” Changbin said, Kai opening the door to lean against the frame. She watched the scene like a hawk, and Duri eventually noticed her mother’s stare.
“Mom!” Duri smiled, waving her over. Kai snorted, walking over to sit at the edge of the bed. “Mr. Changbin was just talking about our family.” Duri crawled over to her mother tugging her arm to bring her forward.
“Was he?” Kai cocked up an eyebrow, looking up at the older man. He seemed to be a little taken aback at the woman.
It was no secret that Kai was beautiful, but this light made her look ethereal. Her black hair was free, cascading down her back in waves. She wore a tank top and a pair of low waisted pajama pants, both in black and her skin was tan, even in the cold February. She brushed her daughter’s brown hair out of her face, sitting up further the bed but keeping her distance.
Duri nodded, before sitting in Changbin’s lap. “I like him, can we keep him?” Duri asked her mother, full seriousness.
Kai looked at her daughter, shocked, before scolding her for the blunt question. Changbin was busy trying to keep in his giggles.
“You can’t just say things like that, Jagi. C’mon, it’s past your bedtime.” She stood up, causing her daughter to whine but followed her mother’s instructions. Before Duri exited, however, she ran up to the man and gave him a quick hug and running out of the room with a large smile. Kai bowed quickly to Changbin, spitting out a quick apology and taking the tray to dispose of the dirty dishes.
Changbin sighed as soon as the door clicked shut, guilt playing in his heart at the way she hadn’t even looked him in the eye. He turned off the light and shuffled the covers over his head.
Tumblr media
“Kai,” Minho called, gaining the said woman’s attention. She hummed, turning to face her boss with a raised eyebrow. It was a few days since Changbin arrived home, and Kai barely said a word to him since. Her head still throbbed with pain, and everything made her head hurt. It was like a bad migraine, but with more aggravation.
“Hang out at my place tonight? The boys are going to be there.” Kai thought to herself, before nodding.
“Duri is having a sleep over at her friend’s house tonight anyways, so it will be good to hang out with you guys. Do you want me to bring anything?”
“Nah. Also, Felix and Chan said they’ll be bringing Changbin, so you don’t have to struggle with your car.” Kai nodded, turning back to her screen to finish up the paperwork to send to some of their clients.
Tumblr media
Kai entered the large apartment that belonged to three of her friends, an hour late to the hang out due to the meal prep for the next day. She wore baggy, ripped mom jeans and a tight, cropped, white wife beater. Her toned abs on display with a leather jacket covering her arms. She tightened her hair in the bun she sported and set her shoes by the door.
She walked into the living space, waving at the already-drunk Han, who squealed and ran over to her, dragging her to the couch. “Hanji, wait.” Kai giggled, shrugging off her jacket and taking out the bottle of soju that she stuffed in the inside of her jacket.
“You’re late.” Minho commented, Kai rolled her eyes and went to put the alcohol in the -kitchen. She ruffled his hair on the way to the kitchen, getting a less-than enthusiastic response from the elder.
“Oh, I'm sorry oppa,” she teased, getting a groan from Minho.
“Never call me that again.” He ordered, and she heard several sounds of agreement. Kai came back with a wine glass filled with the soju.
“Fine by me, oppa,” She teased, before laughing when Minho grabbed her waist to force her to sit down, shoving her head in the process. Her head throbbed, but she fought through the pain. “Fine fine fine, I'll stop. Stop manhandling me, old man.” She whined, shoving his hands away with her feet.
The moment she sat up straight, Jeongin and Han pounced on her, cuddling up to her. Kai groaned under their warm bodies, whining at them to get off. It was going to be a long night.
Tumblr media
“Woo!” Kai cheered as Felix and Han did a drunken rendition of My heart will go on. Kai only had a few sips of her own soju; Han drank the rest of it after five minutes. She wasn’t that bothered, however: she wasn’t a big drinker.
“Kai,” Jeongin whined, getting a groan from the younger woman. “Sing with me.” He nagged.
“No,” Kai matched his whine, shoving his head away from her. “Min, help me.” She made grabby hands to Minho. He whistled, looking elsewhere. “I will report this as harassment, you know.” Kai teased.
Minho shook his head, a smile on his lips.
“I hope you all die painfully.” Kai groaned, letting herself be dragged with Jeongin as they stood up next to the karaoke machine.
The two started singing Livin’ la vida loca, making many of the drunk people giggle at Kai’s exasperated look.
Changbin, who hadn’t really said a word to Kai when she arrived, watched as Kai helped Jeongin stand, despite her unwillingness to sing next to him. He was too intimidated by her to talk with her.
As the week progressed, Changbin was growing more and more jealous at the young woman. She seemed to have her life together; she was kind to him even when she had all the right to yell at him when he hurt her. She never yelled until that night, but the group had that effect on everyone. She was patient with him, and even apologized when she was near his space.
He was angry at her, not only because she seemed to have her life together, but because she was close with everyone else. Call him selfish, but he misses it when they were just eight. So, it was probably better that he didn’t get close to her. He wanted to keep hating her.
But watching the way she joked and laughed with his friends, how sweet and patient she was with their drunk friends, reminded him of his mother when he would scratch his knee.
Changbin decided that night. He was going to make her regret taking him in, and he was going to make her angry with him. Maybe that way, he would have a reason to hate her.

Chapter 8: Dinner with your ghosts
Tumblr media
“Duri, please.” Kai begged when her daughter groaned. “Soojin-ah is looking forward to your sleepover. Last night you were so happy to be going!”
“But moooom,” Duri pouted. “I want to stay home with you and Binnie.” Kai almost gave into her daughter’s pout. Almost, being the key word.
“Fei Justine Duri,” Kai spoke sternly, making the six-year-old quiet down. She almost never used her daughter’s full name, Justine being the name of her childhood best friend that stabbed her in the back by marrying her brother. “You are going to Soojin's home. I know you want to stay home, but Changbin and I need to head out and your uncles can’t watch you. You need to go.”
“But I’m a big girl!” Duri whined once again. “I can stay home alone!” Kai chuckled at her daughter’s antics.
“If you’re such a big girl, you wouldn’t complain to what your mother is asking you to do, hm?” This stumped Duri, causing Kai to laugh once more. She stood up, brushing the dust off her dress pants, adjusting her blazer to cover her shoulders more.
Duri stood up, all dressed and ready to leave. “Bin! Let’s go!” Kai called out, before adjusting her lipstick in the hall mirror. Duri watched her mother with fascination, the itch to wear makeup like her mother strong. Kai had a strong inkling to what her daughter wanted, so she bent down and kissed her daughter’s cheek, so the mauve lip left a print on her kid’s skin. Duri squealed with happiness, checking her cheek in the mirror.
“Okay okay, I'm coming.” Changbin chuckled, stepping into the hall where they were. Kai looked over, and her throat suddenly grew dry with how good he looked. He had on a simple dress shirt and slacks, but they hugged him in all the right places. He struggled with the tie around his neck, grunting when the tie became untied again.
“Here,” She shook herself out of her stupor, walking over to the older man and taking the tie gently. He hummed, looking down at her, eyebrows up curiously. She looked at him pointedly, pointing his chin upward so she had better access to his neck. He instinctually sat his hands on the small of her waist, and Kai had to suppress a shudder.
She tied the tie skillfully, breath ghosting over his neck at the proximity of their bodies. She suddenly coughed after the need to bite him came to mind. She stepped back, fighting the blush that graced her cheeks. “Okay,” her voice was steady, turning to her daughter who looked up at the two with wide eyes. “Ready to go, baby?”
“Is Changbin my new dad?” Duri asked, causing the two to sputter in shock. Their faces bloomed red at the child’s blunt words.
“No, baby. Let’s go.” She grabbed her daughter’s overnight bag, patting the small of her back to get her going. Duri cocked her head to the side but followed her mother’s instructions. Changbin froze, watching the two leave, mind wandering to places a platonic friend wouldn’t dare to venture.
He imagined that he was Duri’s father, and what it would be like, waking up to Kai beside him every day. He quickly shook those thoughts from his head, jogging to catch up with the two of them.
Tumblr media
When they entered the restaurant, Kai was relieved that they weren’t the first ones, but her stomach dropped when they were the last two to arrive. Their friends sat at a table for twelve, completely uncomfortable as her mother jabbered on. Either about herself, Bo, or what a ‘terrible daughter’ she was.
“Hello,” Kai said through gritted teeth and a fake smile. Hye-Jin stopped talking, faking a smile as well.
“My dear, what took you so long? Leaving us with your friends. Not very polite, Kai-ah.” Hye-Jin chastised and Kai pretended to be receptive.
“Well, I hope you weren’t waiting too long. Duri was freaking out about what shoes to wear,” Kai lied, forcing a dry laugh to come out. She sat in between Changbin and Hyunjin (Who was dressed the most elegantly), leg starting to bounce with anxiety.
“Dramatic, just like her mother.” Bo muttered over his drink of water. Three heads snapped to him, and she could sense Changbin’s discontentment.
“More like his uncle. I mean, you were the one to almost drown me after I ate large of a portion of Kimchi.” She commented back, taking a drink of her own water. The table grew silent, and Bo looked like he was going to throttle her. She smiled innocently, looking towards the waitress who just stepped towards them.
They ordered their food, and when the waitress walked away, Hye-Jin set her eyes on Chan. “So, you eight,” Hye-Jin smiled, but Kai could tell it was turning for flirty. Her father sat uncomfortably. The group stiffened, turning their attention on the older woman. “How long have you been plowing my daughter?”
Kai choked on her water, coughing wildly as the two men beside her rubbed her back comfortably. Chan looked at the woman, baffled, while the others grew increasingly more red. “Plowing? Is that what you think has been happening between us nine?” Felix shifted uncomfortably.
“Well, what else are you hanging out with her for? The only thing she has going for her is the fact she has a vagina.” Hye-Jin crossed her arms. “I bet she’s using you all for money.”
Kai glared at her mother, the grip on her thigh tightening to the fact she drew blood. “Not at all. We’re all friends, she’s more like a little sister to us.” Chan seethed. “The fact that you think that of your own daughter is sad.”
“Okay, then what. What is so special about her?” Bo asked. “Because all I can see is a little whimpering bitch in front of me.” Changbin stood up, along with Minho and Jeongin. They looked like they were one second away from causing a massive scene in the middle of the restaurant.
“She’s more of a man you’ll ever be. You’re just a coward that decided to create several Geneva convention violations for a serotonin boost.” Minho spat. He then turned to Hye-Jin, eyes narrowing. “And you. She’s more of a mother than you’ll ever be, you neglecting, abusive, emotionally-incestual piece of shit.” He pointed a finger at the aghast Hye-Jin. Kai’s father, Hao, stood up, pissed.
Instead of yelling at the group for insulting his wife and son, he turned to Hye-Jin and Bo. “I want a divorce.” He turned to his daughter, before kneeling on the ground and bowing to her daughter. “My darling daughter, I’m so sorry.” His voice shook, and Kai’s heart broke. She helped him up, hugging her father tightly.
“Dad, come on. You shouldn’t be kneeling in your condition.” She whispered to her elderly father. “Okay, boys. It’s time to go home.” She smiled at her true family, who felt all too happy at leaving the fancy restaurant. “Oh, and Hye-Jin?” She turned to her mother, before grabbing the full bottle of red wine and splashing it all over her mother’s white dress. Bo stood up quickly as her mother was drenched.
“Go die in a hole, you fucking cunt.” She grabbed her father’s hand and showed the middle finger to Bo. He looked livid but knew he wouldn’t be able to do anything. The group of ten left quickly, right before the chain of expensive food came through.
Tumblr media
Kai laughed as her friends danced with each other in the middle of the deserted 24-hour McDonalds. The workers tiredly watched the group, wishing their pay was higher as Han screamed once again. Hao sat next to her daughter after apologizing profusely. “I’m so sorry, my lotus.” Tears ran down his wrinkled face. “I’m a terrible father. I should’ve done better to protect you.”
“Papa,” Kai hushed her father, who quieted down. She wiped his tears, before hugging him softly. “Better late than never, huh?” He laughed softly. “Oh, and don’t worry about mom. You can stay in my studio; it has a pull-out couch.”
“Is it possible to stay in Korea with you? I want to be a part of your life.” He whispered. Kai’s heart melted; her father and her were always on better terms.
“Of course, Bàba.” She laid her head on her father’s shoulder. Everything felt fine between the two.
Tumblr media
Kai walked down the hall from the studio, passing by Changbin’s room to get some water into her system. “Kai?” Changbin’s muffled voice came from the closed door, and she paused. She hoped she was hearing things, until she heard him say her name again.
She crept into the room, finding Changbin ruffling his hair with a towel to dry it from his shower. He was shirtless, and she had to stop herself from gawking. But she’s only human, so she gawked just a little. He pouted the bed beside her, and she took it. She herself was in her Pj’s, a long T-shirt and shorts.
“Do you like me living with you?” He asked, gaining confusion from the younger female. She nodded, not finding any hesitance in his voice. “I found an apartment.”
Disappointment settled in her gut, thinking he was going to move out. That her life would be bland again. He noticed her expression change, and quickly added to his sentence. “For the four of us! It’s nearby, so we wouldn’t have to move far. Duri would have a larger room, it’s near a retirement community so your father-” She cut him off with a small kiss on his cheek. He froze, eyes wide.
“Sound’s perfect,” She whispered, before her eyes widened with the realization of what she did. “Shit, I’m so sorry-” It was his turn to cut her off by pressing his lips chaste to hers. She buffered; eyes wide open. She slowly closed her eyes, leaning into the kiss, hand coming up to caress his cheek. The two stayed like that for a couple more seconds, her breathing in his scent of wood and bourbon.
They parted, foreheads together, looking into each other’s eyes. “So,” she whispered. “I’m guessing you like me too?” The two started to laugh, giggling into each other like school children.
“I’m sorry for kissing you without your permission,” Changbin frowned. Kai pecked the tip of his nose.
“Don’t worry about it.” She whispered, but he frowned. Kai tilted her head, voice dropping to a sultry tone and leaning in. “If you’re so worried about it, kiss it better.” She puckered her lips, making Changbin turn red.
He playfully pushed her away. “You’ve been spending way too much time with Chan-Hyung.” He teased, causing her to frown.
“You don’t want to kiss me?” She whined, and Changbin groaned.
“If I kiss you again, I won’t be able to stop.” He whispered, leaning back in again. His eyes scanned hers for any regretfulness. All that was there was something untamed.
“Who said I wanted you to stop, hm?” With that confirmation, he captured her lips hungrily. Teeth mashed together as she clawed at his skin, groaning at the pace of his kiss.
Tumblr media
Kai steeped the tea in her mug, watching the sun rise. Moments like this, she was glad to be alive. Hands wrapped around her stomach, hugging her to a firm chest and peppering her neck in soft kisses. Kai leaned into the touch, kissing Changbin’s temple as he yawned. Kai offered him a sip of the tea, which he gladly accepted before cringing.
“What flavor is it?” He screwed his face up at the bitter taste.
“Throat soothing flavor, lemon edition. I need it, after what you put me through last night.” she teased, watching his face turn red and lean into her ear.
“Well, you’re the one who begged me to-” he purred, Kai’s face flushing red and shoving him with her hip. He chuckled, hugging her tighter to his chest, head sitting on top of hers, humming along to a song he and Han were working on.
This morning was a morning of peace. But because it was Kai, nothing good lasts.

Chapter 3: Kai likes a man in uniform, but men in uniform are unkind
Tumblr media
The thing about Kai, she was very optimistic about the small things. Maybe it was her environment that made her this way, but she didn’t let small disappointments drag her down.
It was four years since she moved to Seoul now, and she was very much adjusted to the bumps in the night. She had gotten enough money to get a new apartment, large enough for her and Duri to walk around comfortably, although it was near her first apartment. And by near, I mean right above it and an apartment over, it was that close. She was used to the area around her, and she didn’t want to separate Duri from the seven boys that were basically her uncles.
She even suddenly had free time, with her daughter starting Kindergarten, and her job doing so well they had to hire another receptionist. So, she took this well-deserved day off with open arms.
After dropping Duri off at school, Kai took a deep breath and walked through the city. Yes, although she lived here, she rarely explored the city. With this free day, she wanted to savor her thoughts and spend the morning window shopping.
During her shopping spree, she got a call from Jeongin. It was unlike him to call her on his shift, and especially this early in the afternoon. He shouldn’t be at lunch yet.
“Hey dude, what’s up?” Kai asked after she stepped away from the line she just stepped into to checkout. “Need something?”
“So, remember the time I helped you get out of that really bad date? You said you would help me with anything, right?” Jeongin sounded desperate.
“I am not sleeping with you, Innie,” Kai joked, getting a gag from the other end. “Hey!” She laughed in faux offence.
“No, I am not asking for that!” Kai could hear the flustered tone he sported. “It’s something different.”
“Shoot, go for it.” Kai clicked her tongue against her cheek.
“So, you know my roommate, Changbin, went into the military, like, two years ago?” Jeongin started, papers ruffling in the background and voices being muffled.
“Mmhm, I vaguely remember you being upset about it.” Kai thought back to that day. Jeongin was so upset, Minho was busy consoling the younger man: Kai knew he was also upset, but he wanted Jeongin to be his priority.
Jeongin made a hum of acknowledgement about that day.
“Well, he just got discharged from the military.” Jeongin muttered.
“Oh! That's great! I know you’ve been missing him, when is he coming home?” Kai smiled.
“That's the thing, he flies in in two hours and you’re the only one in the group that I trust enough to drive. He has no other way to get home otherwise.” Jeongin said.
“Two hours?? You didn’t think to ask me before today?” Her brows furrowed, biting her lip nervously.
“I just found out five minutes ago from his superior. Please, Kai, I know it’s your day off, but I could really-” Jeongin starts to ramble, before Kai cuts him off by sighing.
“Innie, please don’t apologize. It’s fine, I’m fine with bringing him back.”
“Thank you, Kai-”
“But.” She cuts him off again, causing the male to hold his breath.
“But?” Jeongin’s hesitant voice sounded a little later as Kai stared at the tile in thought.
“You are buying me lunch, foxy.” Kai teased him. Jeongin breathed a sigh of relief.
“Okay, can do. Pick me up in ten?”
“Sure, clinic?”
“Yeah, bye.”
“See you soon, Qīn,” Kai teased, knowing he would get flustered by the term. Jeongin sputtered on the other end before Kai hung up, causing a little laugh to escape from Kai. She put her items back (it was just a new throw pillow that Han or Hyunjin would like) and walked briskly to the parking lot to get her car.
It was a cute little red car, only meant to fit five people. But it was big enough for her, even if it was almost older than her. She slung her purse onto the booster seat behind her.
Tumblr media
She was a little late, by five minutes, picking up Jeongin, ready to hear him tease her, but he was quiet. Kai frowned and set her hand on his knee, squeezing softly for his reassurance. He was tense, but allowed the touch, hand resting over hers.
It wasn’t a surprise to their friends when Kai and Jeongin got close. The two youngest were always on good terms, and he was the older brother she never had. However, what shocked her the most was Duri and Han. It was fascinating when Duri became close with Han, since Kai and him weren’t the best of friends when they first met. She even calls him Imobu, which Kai was surprised by. She knows she’s never taught her daughter that word, but Han was elated.
Tumblr media
The ride to Incheon airport was silent for the hour. Her radio had broken and Jeongin was too nervous to even speak, jittery to see his friend after two whole years of not speaking to him. He wasn’t even able to come home for the holidays, much to the friend group’s dismay. Kai had seen pictures of Changbin before he entered the military, and she found him handsome, albeit a little scrawny, like a boy-next-door type. Her own type was more of the toned, muscular type anyway.
Finally finding a parking spot after thirty minutes, Jeongin leapt out of the car, pacing back and forth. Kai locked her car, hand clutching the back of Jeongin’s jacket, so he had something to ground himself on (and to prevent him from running off. This man needed a leash). Jeongin gulped loudly, and Kai ran her hands through his hair to calm him down, getting a shy and grateful smile back.
The airport wasn’t as busy as it usually was, due to it being a random Wednesday in February, and no holidays coming up. Jeongin was confident in where he was going, and soon Kai was the one being tugged along like she was on a leash.
Kai and Jeongin stood at Gate 13, Kai standing casually while Jeongin was bouncing on the balls of his feet. Surprisingly, the boy kept growing, even when he was climbing towards his mid-twenties. He was closing in on 180 cm, while she still stayed at 160, her envying him for his wonderful height. He had teased her for being short before, but stopped when a furious Duri was throwing a tantrum over people “disrespecting her mother”. He walked away with tiny bruises after her tiny feet kicked him especially hard.
The gate started emptying out, and the first guy to leave was a man in camo and in a wheelchair, being pushed by a man dressed identically. Kai didn’t think anything of it until Jeongin surged forward, almost leading her to face plant in the middle of the airport gate. Kai led out a yell, gaining a couple curious eyes before she corrected herself.
Kai followed Jeongin, scolding him for almost making her eat shit, before the words died in her throat.
The guy in the wheelchair was incredibly buff, I'm talking shoulders broader than her torso, thick biceps tight in his camo uniform, and even thicker thighs. Kai swallowed hard, eyes going up to his face, which wore a hard expression as he glared at nothing-in-particular. Kai looked over him once more, before noticing an obvious loss in his left pant leg and no second army boot.
Oh, Kai thought. Oh no, what happened?
“Changbin-hyung!” Jeongin cried, gaining the older man’s attention. Changbin let out a small grunt, acknowledging the younger as he squeezed his forearm. Changbin’s eyes drifted to Kai, who straightened up and bowed deeply, hair falling back over her shoulders at the quick move.
“Hello,” Kai spoke in a formal way, thinking it was appropriate for a first greeting. “I’m Kai, one of Innie’s friends.” She rose from her bow and put on one of her friendliest smiles.
He gave Kai a tight-lipped smile, it didn’t reach his eyes. Jeongin was busy talking with his commanding officer, the one who wheeled him out, and Kai stood there awkwardly, fiddling with the edge of her graphic tee.
Jeongin sighed, taking the handles of Changbin’s wheelchair with the army duffel bag slung on his back. It was light, maybe five pounds, and rattled slightly. Kai led the way out the airport, keeping a close eye on the two men as she walked to her car. That was when she realized it.
“Are you able to get in yourself?” Kai asked Changbin, holding the door open. He grunted, nodding, before standing on his right leg and sliding into the cooled car. Kai took the wheelchair and sat it in the trunk (thankfully it was a hatchback), securing it with a seatbelt.
Tumblr media
The ride was silent, and thankfully Jeongin was less nerve-wrecked than before. The moment Kai entered her apartment parking garage, Jeongin let out an “oh shit” under his breath.
“Hm?” Kai turned her head to him once she parked in her spot.
“Hey, can I speak to you for a second?” Jeongin bit his lip. Kai’s brows furrowed, taking a glance at Changbin.
“D’you think you’ll be okay for second while he talks to me?” Kai asked, getting a half-hearted smile from the man. She smiled back, although it was slightly forced. She exited the car, her nervous senior on her tail. They stood a few feet away, not knowing Changbin could still hear everything they were going to say.
“Changbin-hyung needs to stay at your apartment.” Jeongin said. Kai choked on her spit, shooting him a warning glare.
“Innie, I know he’s your friend, but I’m not comfortable letting a stranger that hasn’t said a word to me around my daughter. Why can't he stay with you, or Chan? You guys know him way better than I do!” Kai objected, crossing her arms and cocking her hip to the side.
“My apartment doesn’t have a wheelchair ramp or elevator and I'm near the top floor of a seven-story building. Chan-Hyung can't fit anything else in that apartment, let alone a grown man with belongings and a wheelchair.”
Kai sighed, fingers pulsing towards her temple. She bit her lip, before nodding. “Okay, he can live with me. But if he turns out to be a creep or something, I’m blaming you.” Kai shot him a pointed look, to which he nodded frantically, hands clapping together to show his gratitude. “C’mon you weirdo,” Kai snorted, pushing him towards her car.
It took less time getting the wheelchair out than in, due to Jeongin practically ripping the seatbelt in two. Kai smacked him upside the head, glaring at him as she scolded him.
Changbin sat silently, eyes distant as Jeongin shook his shoulder, before he came too. He barely gave Kai a glance as he got into his chair, holding himself straight. Kai bit her lip nervously: This was going to be interesting.
Tumblr media
“I’m so sorry about the mess,” Kai said as she entered her apartment. She quickly slid on her slippers, picking up all the tripping hazards along the way. Changbin didn’t say anything as he watched her pick up the almost-spotless-apartment.
The floors were light bamboo, and the walls were white, Posters of music bands and papers of children’s drawings were taped to the walls, bringing color to the dull apartment. The apartment had a nice chamomile scent, mixed with the stench of crayons and baby powder. There wasn’t much furniture, except a dollhouse in the corner, a bookshelf with a few Mandarin and English texts, and a desk, littered with kindergarten homework and basic math textbooks.
“I only have two rooms; one is a kid’s room, so you probably don't want to sleep in a pink racecar bed,” Kai chuckled to herself, getting another blank stare from the older man. “You can take my room; I can sleep on the couch since it is comfortable. I’ll make sure everything is clean, make yourself at home.” Kai bowed, before scurrying into the room closest to where they were.
Changbin rolled his eyes after her nervous form before rolling into the living area. The Tv stand had few nicknacks, a framed photo of Kai and the guys at a child’s birthday party, a banner reading “4” is seen in the background. They all looked so genuinely happy, the spectacle making Changbin’s stomach churn with hate. The space he would've been in was replaced by her, and he hated it.
About half an hour later, Kai comes out with a smile. “It’s ready, do you want to see?” she asked, cocking her head to the side. Changbin resisted the urge to groan with annoyance, why did everyone treat him like a baby? He nodded, rolling after her as she padded softly to the master bedroom.
A queen-sized bed sat on the furthest wall, sitting under a large window, sheer blue curtains framing the bed. White linen made up the bed, smelling like fresh linen and lavender, and a little like Vanilla. It made the room less sad.
The rest of the room was barren, only her bed and a small dresser sat on the other wall. It looked like she had just moved in, despite her living in the “new” apartment for about two years now. “It’s not much, but it’s home.” Kai whispered, turning to the older man.
“What food do you like? I can make it, if you’d like.” Kai offered, hands coming up and holding her hands in front on her chest, clutched together.
“’m not hungry,” Changbin grunted out, voice hoarse from not talking and not drinking anything in the past few hours. The first words he spoke to Kai, and she was elated.
“I’m sure you are, I was told you eat like a champ.” Kai smiled, trying to lighten the tense mood. “Now, c’mon, what do you want? I can make bulgogi, or yubuchobap, or-” She got interrupted by him looking up at her with a glare.
“Don’t you ever shut up? I am not hungry, woman!” He yelled, standing up before he fell due to him being unbalanced.
“Oh my god, are you okay?! Here, let me-” Kai crouched down, hands reaching out to help him up before he slapped them away roughly. He was positively seething, nostrils flaring as his face turned red.
“Leave me alone!” He yelled at her, shoving her back away from him. Kai shrieked as she lost balance and fell backwards, head slamming against the doorframe making stars swim around her vision. The room fell silent, all that was heard was heavy breathing, as the two looked at each other. Kai’s eyes were wide with fear as Changbin closed his eyes in frustration.
Kai stood up, the room dizzy as she exited the room, thick tension filling the apartment. Kai jumped as she heard a door slam, tears welling up in her eyes, her head throbbing with pain.
Her phone went off, startling her out of her daze. Kai picked up the phone before answering it. The school had called because it was already past pick up time and Duri was getting more antsy. “Shi- shoot, I’ll be there soon. Something came up and I didn’t look at the time. I’m 15 minutes away, tell my daughter that I didn’t forget about her, okay? Thank you!” She hung up quickly, grabbing her purse and rushing out the door.
Changbin jumped slightly when the front door slammed. He was sitting on the bed, his left leg pulled out of his pants. His leg ended just below his knee; a scar ran from where the skin was sewn shut up to his hip where they put a new titanium hip in. Changbin choked back tears, head slipping into that awful, cloudy space.
He felt worthless; it was an accident that could have been prevented. But now, he was reminded of his mistake every time he opened his eyes. The scar was an ugly pink thing, splitting into several different directions from the skin grafting. Now he felt uglier than ever, even before he left for the military.
Because after all, he thought. Who would ever tolerate or love a thing so ugly?
