A new bill in the capitol would legalize safe spaces to use drugs.

The bill would allow the Department of Human Services to license what the bill calls “Overdose Prevention Sites.” People could go to these locations and use illegal drugs under direct supervision, with no fear of criminal prosecution.

Right now, they are far from common in the United States. Rhode Island is the only state to legalize them, but New York City and several other cities have them. A pair of lawmakers are saying those spaces are the next logical step as the state tries to curb overdose deaths.

Opioid overdoses continue to be a leading cause of accidental deaths in the state for those between the ages of 18 and 49. In 2021, 3,013 people died from overdoses. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago), said supervised injection sites are a logical step to help curb those numbers.

“Why would we turn our backs on people struggling with a substance use disorder saying, ‘no, we don’t want to allow space for you,'” Ford said. “‘We would rather see you die on the streets.'”

Taylorville Police Chief Dwayne Wheeler takes his own unique approach to helping people who are suffering from addiction. The Taylorville Safe Passage program has helped hundreds of people get clean before they get in trouble with the law. The increased supervision is a sensible idea for Wheeler, but he is skeptical of the ramifications that come with giving people a safe space to use.

“There’s a lot of work to be done,” Wheeler said. “But let’s treat the people.”

Ford said in an ideal situation, there would be treatment options available at these facilities.

“I think we should have the debate to make sure that when we have overdose prevention sites, that they’re not places where people just go use drugs,” Ford said. “It’s the place where people go and get the help that they need while struggling with a substance use disorder.”

But the bill does not require those services. At a minimum, the bill would require these facilities to have a clean space to use, have naloxone to help people survive an overdose, staff that can help people who are in the middle of an overdose and equipment like fentanyl testing strips. It also would give legal immunity to people who use in those facilities.

Wheeler’s Safe Passage program gives people the opportunity to come into the police department and say they need help. It’s gained state wide acclaim, and even earned his department a $250,000 grant from the state to expand.

The program prioritizes getting people to treatment centers. It relies on people to take that first step and admit they need help, and once they take that step, the department — and it’s long list of volunteers — will drive that person to whatever rehab center they can find a spot in, no matter where it is in the state.

He said if the state is going to allow supervised injection sites, they need to carefully design the program, and make sure it leaves no questions unanswered on how it would work.

There is data that shows supervised injection sites have positive impacts, but they also come with societal ramifications, including arguments over where the sites will be located.

“Illinois should answer the call, knowing that this is the best harm reduction tool that we have in our toolbox,” Ford said. “When you look at overdose prevention sites, and you look at other harm reduction tools, this is the number one harm reduction tool that has proven to save lives across the world.”

This is not the first time the proposal has made its way around the Capitol, but it hasn’t found any traction in past years. So far, the bill has not been voted on in any committees.

A strike by 150,000 workers at automakers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler) looks imminent.  United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain has aptly declared contract talks as war between billionaires and workers.  

If the Auto Workers walk out when their contract expires on Sept. 14, it would be the second-largest strike in over 25 years, second only to the current actors’ strike by 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA.

The biggest obstacle to mass unionization is the atomization of the workforce since deindustrialization.

This is keeping workers isolated from one another, and so the illusion of being the only one suffering economic hardship is more easily sustained.

But as the conditions of American workers deteriorate, we're beginning to see heightened class struggle manifesting in more common labor actions.

From the Unionization of various Starbucks stores across the country, to the teacher strikes in Portland and Las Vegas, to the surgical UAW strikes of Shawn Fain, Class struggle and Class consciousness are increasing along with the labor actions.

A Gallup poll shows 75% of Americans sympathize with UAW Workers over the Bosses at Ford, GM and Stellantis.

A reckoning years in the making is coming for the Capitalist Class, but only if we harness this energy, educate the Working Class and elevate Class Consciousness.

growing up in a household where following your dreams end up being a reality, gabriel rahal-de la cruz really felt like anything he strived for he could easily achieve. and gabe had a lot of different interest, from playing soccer, to playing tennis, writing like his mom, and then there was acting. he never thought acting would be in the picture, but when he starred in his first role for a franchise, it felt like a dream come true. until real life came at him and the dream seemed just that, a dream.

realizing that he was going to always be remembered for his one role, casting for something else as a teenager was much more difficult than he thought. and with both his parents busy with their own careers, his mom on her third hit book, and his father winning the ticket for a senate seat in california, he felt like the focus had shifted to represent them. and now he had a new role to play, of the perfect younger son.

but there was still a bit of wild child in him, even when he went to a boarding school in los angeles. he became the golden boy, the athlete, the party boy. but throughout those four years, he came to a realization that he was losing himself, the closer he was reaching the end of his high school years. he had missed the one thing that brought joy to him, and he knew that acting was the one thing that gave him that.

so when he graduated, he decided to study film while also doing auditions. as years went on, one of his mother's books got auctioned to become a film, and he auditioned for the main role, which he couldn't believe he had gotten the role. there was a part of him that felt that nepotism was involved, but he always worked hard in whatever he did, and he knew he would kill it in this role.

mixed reviews. it had gotten mixed reviews, many critics calling it a good adaptation, but the acting could have been better, and well, he took it personal and to heart reading that he got this role because he was the son of the author. but did that stop him. no.

he graduated university, and he kept auditioning. and he got another role, a huge one. a love story, and he couldn't believe how much people loved the film. but the reason for their success was because of the rumors that gabe was dating his co-star. the thing is, he was secretly hooking up with one of the camera guys. once the studio found out, they highly recommended that gabe not lean into his sexuality, even though he was bisexual. they wanted bigger success, and that meant leaning into the romance that was already on screen. he didn't realize that hollywood was still like this. but if he wanted a bigger career, he had to play along.

gabe was feeling all sorts of ways. he didn't like the fact that he was hiding his sexuality, but he didn't want to stop acting. but was it a lie if he was dating women, he was still attracted to them. and he was so excited for his next role. so he decided to play the part, and eventually he picked up another role. his new role dealt with immigration, and it was close to home, knowing that he had family members that were immigrants, his own grandfather being one. so taking this role, he felt close to it. and the buzz going around that this could easily get some big award noms put a little more pressure, but he knew he'd give it his full attention and make sure he gave his character justice.

best friends for life: this is someone who has been best friends with gabe since they were kids. it so happens that they moved to denver a year ago, and when they realize that gabe was going to be out there to film his next movie, they planned the entire move together, excited to be in the same city again.

we are each others found family: so this person was someone that he befriended later in life. perhaps in college or after he graduated. this person is someone he feels like a twin to. every secret, every love, every heartbreak, they knew all about it. and when gabe got this role, he told them to move out with him to denver. now they both are living together in an apartment downtown.

can't stand this costar: this is someone he has worked with, and perhaps they work together now in this new film that's filming in denver. it's usually the two of them always fighting for similar roles. they were once friends before, but jealousy has come between them. they know gabe's secret about him being bisexual, as they may have hooked up in the past.

can you be friends with a fan?: it's a question that's always been asked. would you befriend a fan, would you date them? the real question here though is, could the fan have an obsession. who knows. and maybe this fan might be a little obsessive, or maybe just admires them for the work they do. but either way, gabe ends up befriending them. will he regret it later, time will tell.

Accordo storico raggiunto sabato tra United Automobile Workers e il gruppo Stellantis

Il presidente Usa, Joe Biden, plaude all’accordo “storico” raggiunto sabato tra il sindacato del lavoratori dell’auto americani, lo Uaw e il gruppo Stellantis. In una nota, il presidente degli Stati Uniti ha sottolineato che “questo contratto innovativo premia i lavoratori dell’auto che si sono sacrificati così tanto per rilanciare la nostra industria automobilistica con aumenti record, più ferie retribuite, maggiore sicurezza pensionistica e più diritti e rispetto sul lavoro”. Non solo. “Voglio fare un plauso all’United auto workers e alla Stellantis per aver concordato di riportare immediatamente in servizio tutti i lavoratori della Stellantis che hanno partecipato ai picchetti per conto dei loro fratelli e sorelle dell’Uaw. Questo contratto – ha sottolineato ancora Biden – è una testimonianza del potere dei sindacati e della contrattazione collettiva per creare posti di lavoro solidi per la classe media e aiutare le nostre aziende americane più rappresentative a prosperare”. Contestualmente al raggiungimento dell’accordo preliminare con Stellantis, l’Uaw ha annunciato un ampliamento dello sciopero per General Motors, nel tentativo di aumentare la pressione sull’azienda che è l’unica casa automobilistica di Detroit che non ha ancora siglato un’intesa. A incrociare le braccia saranno i dipendenti dello stabilimento Gm di Spring Hill, Tennessee, il più grande impianto di produzione della GM in Nord America, con 11 milioni di metri quadrati di superficie e quasi 4.000 dipendenti. Qui si producono la Cadillac Lyriq elettrica, la GMC Acadia e i crossover Cadillac XT5 e XT6. Abbiamo spostato le montagne. Abbiamo riaperto un impianto di assemblaggio che era stato chiuso”, ha dichiarato il presidente dell’Uaw Shawn Fain. L’accordo include l’impegno di Stellantis a costruire un nuovo camion di medie dimensioninello stabilimento di Belvidere, Illinois, che doveva essere chiuso. Verranno riassunti circa 1.200 lavoratori e ne verranno aggiunti altri 1.000 per un nuovo impianto di batterie per veicoli elettrici, ha dichiarato il sindacato.
