The Legion of Super-Heroes is a 30th/31st/32nd century inter-galactic team of super-powered young adults. They first debuted in a 1958 issue of Adventure Comics and there have been five distinct Legion versions since then. All versions are almost entirely independent from each other and can therefore be read without any previous knowledge of the others.
Which version you chose is a matter of taste since they all have their pros and cons. This guide will list a couple of different places to start for each of them.
Tumblr media
The first version of the Legion, usually called the Preboot, mainly appeared from the late ’50s to 1994. They had several runs during this time and changed a lot along the way, which can make it seem like a daunting starting point, but their runs also contain a lot of the team’s best and most famous stories which are well worth reading. Good starting points for this version include the following:
Legion of Super-Heroes: The Silver Age Vol. 1
There are currently two published and one upcoming omnibus in this series, and one trade that collects many of the same issues as the first omnibus at a lower price point. Either can be a good starting point if you like silver age stories, but they can feel quite dated to a modern audience.
Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes vol. 1
There are currently two hardcover books in this series. They collect issues from the late seventies and are therefore a bit more contemporary than the silver age stories, in addition to featuring a older version of the Legion and slightly more serious stories.
Legion of Super-Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga
This story, published in the early eighties, is often considered on the Legion’s best and most iconic stories. It may be a bit more enjoyable if one is already a fan of the Legion, but it’s an OK starting point and a must read for them.
Tumblr media
The second version of the team, often called “the Reboot”, mainly appeared from 1994 to 2004. They were a totally rebooted version of the team, and their books are generally a pretty good fit for new readers since they’re a lot easier to overlook than the earlier version’s. Good starting points for this version include the following:
Legion of Superheroes: The Beginning of Tomorrow or Legionnaires Book One
These books collect the first part of the reboot, including the team’s updated origin. The Beginning of Tomorrow is an older and shorter collection while Legionnaires Book One is a newer and slightly larger collection.
Legionnaires Book One was followed by Legionnaires Book Two, but the rest of this part of the run sadly remains largely uncollected and has to be read in single issues. However, all relevant issues are available on Comixology and may be available on DC Universe.
Legion Lost or The Legion by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Vol. 2
This story takes place later in the run and was designed as a jumping on point for new readers. It’s a 12 issue maxi series with a limited cast that tells the story of how a small group of Legionnaires try to get home after being transported far out in space. It’s a good starting point that makes it easy for the reader to become familiar with the characters.
Tumblr media
The third version of the team, often called “the Threeboot”, mainly appeared between 2005 and 2009. It was intended to be a more serious and “edgy” take on the team, which also makes it the most different version out of them, for better or worse. Supergirl was a member of the team for about half of the run, which was reflected in the book’s title.
This version is somewhat controversial because of its tone, characterisations and stories, but it’s fully collected, unlike the two previous versions, and can still be an interesting read. Good starting points for this version include the following:
Legion of Super-Heroes: Teenage Revolution
This book collects the first issues of the run and introduces the new version of the team as well as the conflict of teenagers versus adults that’s an important part of this run.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes: Strange Visitor from Another Century
This is the run’s third trade and it isn’t a natural starting point in its own right, but it contains the issues where Supergirl first joins this version of the team and can be a good place to start if that’s what one is looking for.
Tumblr media
The fourth version of the Legion, often called “the Retroboot”, first appeared in 2010. They’re technically supposed to be the Preboot version of the team, except they were retooled slightly order to fit with the continuity and universe of the ‘10s.
This version can be a somewhat confusing starting point if one isn’t at least somewhat familiar with the events of their first runs, but the first stories this team featured in try to mostly bridge that gap. Good starting points for this version include the following:
Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes
This is the second story that this version of the team appeared in, with the first being Justice League of America, Vol. 2: The Lightning Saga, but this story is in my opinion a much better introduction to the team. That’s mostly because this story is their own story and not just a limited guest appearance in two other books, which gives them more time to establish themselves.
The story follows Superman as he travels to the 31st century and helps the Legion reunite and fight back against the xenophobic Earth Man.
Legion of Super-Heroes: The Choice
This trade collects the first part of the Legion’s own title and is set after the events of The Lightning Saga, Superman and the LoSH and a story called Legion of 3 Worlds (which is not particularly new reader friendly). The Choice is connected to them but can be read independently and is a decent starting point on its own.
Tumblr media
The Legion, much like Batman and Green Lantern, retained most of their continuity when Flashpoint happened in 2011 and the rest of the DC universe was rebooted. Their post-Flashpoint books therefore still feature the fourth version of the team.
I wouldn’t recommend starting with this run since it relies heavily on knowledge of the previous run and just isn’t very good, but if you do you want to look at the following book:
Legion of Super-Heroes: Hostile World
The trade that collects the first issues of the main book during this time period. It follows most of the Legion as they struggle with their usual issues and not being able to time travel due to the events of Flashpoint, and it splits its focus between the old members as well as a couple of newer members.
The concurrent Legion Lost book is not a good starting point.
Tumblr media
As of late 2019 they’re being replaced by a fifth version of the team, which has been nicknamed the ”Bendisboot”. It follows Jon Kent, Superboy, as he meets the Legion and travels to the future to join their team.
This run has yet to be collected, but its reception has so far been mixed to very bad. It’s a incredibly different take on the team while also failing to accommodate any new readers who may not be familiar with them, and I wouldn’t recommend it as a starting point for new or returning readers.

LoSH Appreciation Week Day 2 - Legion Fashion
There have been many interesting twists and turns in Legion fashion over the years, but one of the more interesting ones was the casual nudity among the inhabitants of Winath.
Tumblr media
They came close to depicting it in Legion of Super-Heroes vol 3, but it looks to me like censorship decisions added tops for the women. Note that they are crudely drawn in all black, as though an afterthought.
Tumblr media
By LoSH vol 4, DC seemed more comfortable with the readers knowing that they wore very little, and it was depicted several times during this run.
Tumblr media
So if you ever tire of trying to figure out whether your Legion look needs a bubble space helmet, a pink bikini, a black corset, or any of the other weird fashion choices over the years, you are welcome to shed these problems and your clothing on lovely, carefree Winath.
