Another ESC Site Award for Going through the motions
youtube
Tumblr media
There are three things that I noticed in this performance:
The first is the most pronounced meaty camel toe of the song contest. Unfortunate? Depends on what they were after on that day. I'll leave that to you to decide.
The second was they named their entry after the theme of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmo after the little known Swedish entrant, Loreen, succeeded the previous year with a little ditty called 'Euphoria'.
The other is the utter look of sheer terror on lead singer David's face for the first half of the song. If you are going to wear a golden jumpsuit, you should be ready to launch, and he wasn't there until the half way marker. But then he hit his stride and he was attaching the song and the stage like a boss. I would have liked it if he attacked the performance more confidently.
[I was also irritated that they pronounced 'Sun' as 'Son' all through the song, but i'll let that go.]

Maybe it’s just because I don’t like Dembele, but it’s definitely weird he chose to celebrate. Like, he’s not the first player to have scored a goal against a former club in a Champions League game. Zlatan did when he was at PSG against FC Malmo in 2015, Cristiano Ronaldo did when he was at Real Madrid against Man Utd in 2013(or it could’ve been 2012, I can’t remember), and Mohamed Salah did it while at Liverpool against Roma back in 2018. The difference being that those three players chose not celebrate against their former clubs.
Exactly!

Benidorm Fest First Listen!
1. Almácor - "Brillos Platino" This is really fun! Is it a Eurovision song? Not really. It's a fun, summery, party number - it'll go down a treat with audiences but doesn't have anything really standing out to me. The ending feels a bit abrupt, as well. 7/10
2. Angy Fernández - "Sé quién soy" OH THIS IS A BOP! It's good in the opening, but then the chorus HITS YOU! This is going to be so fun to see translated onto stage, I would be very happy with this showing up to Malmo! 8.5/10
3. Dellacruz - "Beso en la mañana" This one feels like another pop song, but not as fun as Almácor's. It just feels like it falls a little bit flat compared to the first two. It picks up a bit in the last 10 seconds, but it just feels out of place. 5/10
4. Jorge González - "Caliente" I'm not gonna lie, the photo of him is VERY distracting. They looked at me first. The like, three lines of English in the song are a little off-putting. They don't add anything to the song. It's a different style though, and I like that! Also the beat does feel like, if it wins, we're getting our first male edition of Fuego. Eleni Foureira, the impact you made on this competition will never be forgotten! 7/10
5. Lérica - "Astronauta" With a title like that, this song has some incredible staging potential. The way the song is, I'm worried it won't live up to it. I'm getting Avicii, Bastille, summer 2013 vibes from this song. I like it, but probably not for Eurovision. 6/10
6. Mantra - "Me vas a ver" This is a feel good song, through and through. A fun beat, great voices, nothing standing out to me really - it's not going to win, but it'll be a fun song to get people dancing! This is going on a guilty pleasure playlist, for sure 7/10
7. Marlena - "Amor de verano" I WAS VIBING UNTIL I HEARD THE ENGLISH UGH. It's not my usual type of song, but it's easy enough to nod along to it. The two lines of English in every chorus don't do anything for it. 6/10
8. María Peláe - "Remitente" Okay so this version is 4:33, so obviously the entry will be shortened. Not for me. Unsurprising since I didn't like Eaea last year. I am just not a fan of this style (and given Blanca's placing, I can't see a vocally similar act going in 2024). 5/10 9. Miss Caffeina - "Bla bla bla" Another song that just feels like it falls a bit flat. It's not *bad*, it's just not got anything special about it that endears you to it. Feels more Ibiza than Benidorm. 5/10
10. Nebulossa - "Zorra" Their outfits alone have me intrigued. This SCREAMS 80s guilty pleasure, I hope the staging is going to be as cheesy and crazy as it is in my mind. Is it the best song? No. Could it be the best performance? Absolutely. 8/10
11. Noan - "Te echo de -" Oh I don't like his voice. Please, sir, just clear your throat. I could enjoy the song in a world where it wasn't so damn raspy, but the way it is just really bothers me. I understand it's a stylistic choice, it's not for me. 5/10
12. Quique Niza - "Prisionero" This is the first song that feels ballad-y so far, so it does stand out a bit. I'm not hugely excited by it, but it will probably have some very good staging. I think live vocals will improve this one a lot, but right now it's a bit plain. 6.5/10
13. Roger Padrós - "El temps" I see they saved the ballads for last! Ballads are usually too plain for me - special ballads will grow on me with time. This is not one of those. 5/10
14. Sofia Coll - "Here to stay" IMMEDIATE CHILLS. This is immediately special. I'm willing to forgive the English. There's Catalan so it evens out. It's the first song that really feels EUROVISION. I hope the staging lives up to it and the whole package is winning material. 9/10
15. St. Pedro - "Dos Extraños (Cuarteto de Cuerda)" This is coffee shop jazz. This is not a compliment. This gives me Salvador Sobral vibes, and I STILL hold a grudge against Portugal because of that man. 3/10
16. Yoly Saa - "No se me olvida" The beginning is a bit boring, but I LOVE the chorus. It scratches my brain right, and it makes the build worth it. 8/10

calib. LAX, am aware we talked to 'dove since forever w heart of meaningful results, not just irony, satire, jokes. she always needed reassurance. flirting to 'dove, even when married, is talking to 'dove. NOW, LAX, suburbs, or houses, just like HH or even Malmo, ladies since 18 of age, become hunted, almost like LAW told DO Security Ltd 2004 to screen in field legal entities, companies HQs or sub-units, and request they revealing a window stamp of the legally contracted Protector. art.4 of Law 333 RO, before 2013, before the E.U. 2008-2009, told all legal entities across RO must had negotiated a security services contract, subscription so to put, at certain minimum monthly fee (price of contract), for fast task force intervention over real event. DRAFT indeed onto Hotmail public MSN Outlook, OneDrive, since forever (2008, and before). NOT MUCH more ethical than that LAW, life at LAX must had been risky if ladies in the house would not attend certain xx appointments, exchanges, trading, upon reaching 18 of age. regardless of career to take, regardless of studies to make (attend to). definitely one could had always said NO. probably one could had even desperately tried reaching the Police. NO. unless you aim at ending up in Fresno, Ca. still Cali, no doubt. so am aware 'pau might not be the saint white innocent lady my eyes and heart would look and beat into a marriage, calm sea, and blessed on pulling winds and sunshine. just like when referring to 'dove, when referring to 'pau affairs, i would seek common grounds, not jokes and irony and satire. could had been construed to interpretation, but not in the 1st place. shades go fine, contour should come out for shape, not shade. mebbe Stella felt i needed write that, mebbe Elsa felt that too, mebbe Lorena thought that. only Taylor proven a deeper connoisseur, and sent out highly regarded Singapore pics. The Legacy Of Game 6
The FIFA World Cup, becoming held for the first time in Russia, will start on Summer 14, 2018 and certainly will carry on for only a little over a month. Placed 55th on the planet, Panama’s soccer staff ‘Los Canaleros’ start their historic debut against Belgium on Summer 18 before satisfying The united kingdomt and Tunisia. Starting on Summer 14, 32 groups from about the planet will descend on Russia to be a part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Because of the biggest football tournament on earth prepared to begin in just a few days, the 32 groups are typical willing to kickstart World Cup 2018 in Russia. Knocking out baseball giants England in Euro 2016 Round of 16 was an unforgettable evening in Icelandic history while the celebration goes on due to the fact nation is perhaps all set to help make more such historical thoughts in Russia this present year. Stage: First Round for ICC T20 World Cup 2021 Qualifiers Teams. The ICC has actually various media alliances and secures live streaming of matches on a large rating of media outlets, both Cable and Digital. The White House stated it absolutely was dealing with Congress to provide $424.4 million toward a brand new initiative to bolster democracy throughout the world, including support to independent press. I became going to something and I also noticed him from the crowd,' Naghmeh described her first meeting with Saeed in a 2013 meeting with Fox Information. Porsche Porsche Drive - Subscription (previously called Porsche Passport service) is costly, but it gives you a great deal for the money. 5:30. This is actually the directory of the kick-off time in IST for many World Cup 2018 matches. The team stage of this FIFA World Cup 2018 came to a drab end on Thursday as Colombia and Belgium emerged victorious in Group H and G correspondingly. Belgium vs Panama - 08.30 p.m. Panama are going to take full advantage of every minute within their debut World Cup campaign. Sigurdsson, whom scored four goals and made as numerous assists to simply help Iceland be considered, is likely to be crucial within their debut appearance. While World Cup is a particular together with biggest competition for just about any country and player, making a debut after many years of trying and stuggle makes it all the more unique. The biggest upset into the group phase ended up being definitely the exit of four-time champions Germany while they lost 2-0 against Southern Korea in Group F on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Senegal's exit despite being in same things as Japan in Group H has also been the very first instance in World Cup history that a team have been eliminated because of the quantity of yellow cards that they had accrued into the tournament. Despite having a tough team with Croatia, chicken, Ukraine and Finland, the famous Viking Clap has actually discovered its method to Russia, courtesy talented players like Gylfi Sigurdsson and Johann Gudmundsson. Midfielders: Johann Berg Gudmundsson (Burnley), Birkir Bjarnason (Aston Villa), Arnor Ingvi Traustason (Malmo FF), Emil Hallfredsson (Udinese), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton), Olafur Ingi Skulason (Kardemir Karabukspor), Rurik Gislason (Sandhausen), Samuel Fridjonsson (Valerenga), Aron Gunnarsson (Cardiff City). Forwards: Alfred Finnbogason (FC Augsburg), Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson (FC Rostov), Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (Reading), Albert Gudmundsson (PSV Eindhoven). Need to know that will win the 2018 World Cup? Everybody knows that the annual Flipkart and Amazon sale will probably come from just a couple hours. Just whenever Panama believed that this would be another World Cup without all of them participating, an 88th min champion from Torres against Honduras and United States Of America going down inside their qualification match against Trinidad gave all of them their violation to Russia. Fans of both groups will have lots of chances getting passes for the online game in Pasadena, particularly when they're going regarding the additional admission marketplace. Because the four were making plans to rent a property off university when it comes to after fall, they came across Cody at a pickup basketball game and asked if he’d like become their particular 5th roomie. Ever since then, moncler always tried their best to guide the fashion; even through the laque nylon of this duration emerged in just four shapes: yellow, blue, orange and green. 먹튀폴리스 have the full lineup of the many 16 teams having caused it to be to your knockouts while the group phase for the FIFA World Cup 2018 found a conclusion on Thursday. With England and Belgium within their group, two groups that boast of experience and skill, it should be difficult for Panama, who have a Colombian supervisor Hernan Dario Gomez, to achieve the Round of 16. But that knows, if Iceland could knock-out England, why can’t Panama? The final day's the team stage saw Colombia beat Senegal 1-0 to top Group H while Japan destroyed to Poland 1-0 but nevertheless been able to proceed through to a higher round on reasonable play. Senegal had just needed a point in their last Group H game to attain the second round, but beat saw them pass up to Japan, just who edged them for the runners-up place by virtue of having a far better disciplinary record. Poland vs Senegal - 08.30 p.m. Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia - 08.30 p.m. Egypt vs Uruguay - 5.30 p.m. Costa Rica vs Serbia - 5.30 p.m. Switzerland vs Serbia - 11:30 p.m. Panama vs Tunisia - 11:30 p.m. Argentina vs Croatia - 11:30 p.m. And even though 2014 finalists Argentina are favourites going ahead, Iceland will count on their qualifying performance to make the second area ahead of Croatia and Nigeria. France vs Argentina - 7.30 p.m. Sweden vs Switzerland - 7.30 p.m. Peru vs Denmark - 9.30 p.m. France vs Peru - 08:30 p.m. Nigeria vs Iceland - 08:30 p.m. Iceland have now been positioned in perhaps the toughest team heading to Russia - Group D - with Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria. Croatia vs Nigeria - 12.30 a.m. Russia vs Croatia - 11.30 p.m. Finishing ahead of Croatia and Ukraine to be eligible for the planet Cup proved features that Euro 2016 was not a one-time success tale.

It's hilarious how people thought Sarah Dont Findher, I mean Sarah Dawn Finer, and Lynda Woodruff were two separate beings. Some Swedish people included! 🤦‍♀️ Lynda Woodruff entered the Melfest spotlight in 2012 and the Eurovision spotlight in 2013. Stumbled across a compilation someone did of her 2013 adventures. 🤣 youtu(.)be/O_acK30Q25M Anyway, seems like the English didn't want to be any worse than you Irish and sent a doll too 5 years later. Not to compete though. youtu(.)be/vzo_fcn55m8

Igranka - Who See
Montenegro joined the Eurovision bandwagon late when you consider Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina join in 1993. They were attached to Serbia for a considerable time so I suppose that had something to do with it.
They have taken this year off this year, and they will come back next year or the year after with something similar to what we've heard before. The problem I suppose if that when they do present a song that is worthy of attention, it is either ignored or presented in a way no one really appreciates it. Igranka is a banger; but it didn’t get enough from the voters to get it through to the final. Performance was a bit of a mess,, but decent.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (240-231)
"I can hear him, his heart on the strings I can see him, bearing the passing time on my face I’m proud to confess his faith Of a thousand and one songs this is the one that I hum"
If there's anything I love at Eurovision, is when someone sings a song from their soul. And in both of Joci's entries, he does just that.
Az en apam is a bit more sedate than his first entry (which will come soon enough), but it's calming and serene with substance. The lyrics, talking about his relationship with his father, is a touching and poetic tribute, one that people should really speak to their loved ones that care about them.
It's just a shame this song was the one to break Hungary's impressive qualifying streak; I thought they were on a path to win soon (though not with this one...). And they left the contest too; hopefully they will steer the ship back to more open waters and come back.

#239: Anna Vissi -- Mono i Agapi (Cyprus 1982)
"Η ζωή μας περνά, κι ότι φεύγει πονά Πίσω δε γυρνά, κι όμως κάτι μας κρατά"
"Our life passes by, and whatever leaves, we’re in pain It doesn’t come back, but something holds us together"
In most cases, the first entry somebody has sent in the contest is their best, with a number of exceptions here and there. Anna is one of them; I never liked her first entry, but her other two are fantastic.
Mono i agapi is quite lyrically simplistic--it talks about how love remains between two people, as the world changes around them. But the melody has a very loungy sound--I've heard it being compared to a James Bond theme. While I don't hear why it would be the case (other than the alluring mystery of this piece), it does give a calming vibe, and stands out in the rather mediocre field in 1982.

#238: Yardena Arazi -- Ben Adam (Israel 1988)
בן אדם הוא רק בשר ודם,” אבק פורח במדבר, בן אדם, בדרך העולם, כצל עובר, כחרס הנשבר "
“A human being is only flesh and blood, Dust flying in the desert A human being, in the way of the world Like a passing shadow, like broken pottery"
Yardena's time at Eurovision 1988 is best known for the anecdote where she goes to a fortune teller who said that song #9 would win that contest. When the draw occurred, Israel was slotted into that place, but was shafted up to #8 when Cyprus withdrew from having an already-released song. #9 would go to Ne Partez Pas Sans moi, which would end up winning and make history thanks to its singer.
This ends up taking away from the song itself; Ben Adam is reminiscent of older folk songs, but it takes off with its own character and flair. I also love the lyrics, which recognizes humans as flawed, without berating them as such. (We need a little bit more of that in the internet world, haha)
The flurry towards the end of the song was well-executed too, and the instrumentation is just fantastic. It feels like one was in a festival!

#237: Amandine Bourgeois -- L'enfer et moi (France 2013)
“Tu m’as fait pleurer à vif Mon cou porte encore ta griffe J’aimais échanger de peau”
“You made me cry a lot You can still see your mark on my neck I used to like exchanging skin”
I love the dark sensuality of this song—with its blues influences, it tells a story of a relationship gone awry, but does so with sophistication. It starts out with a slick guitar line, which later devolves into a full on outrage against the lover at question.
The harshness of this song probably clashed with its opening spot, which is why it’s so underrated. Or it was because of Amandine’s styling...
Either way, it has grown on me since I watched the 2013 contest, and it gets the right vibes going...except with the lyrical story...

#236: Ambasadori -- Ne mogu skriti svoju bol (Yugoslavia 1976)
"Ne molim da se vratiš Al’ molim te da pamtiš Voljela tebe samo sam ja”
“I’m not begging you to come back But please remember I only loved you”
Ambasadori was one of Yugoslavia's biggest groups, and they have a long list of who's who in the Bosnia music scene. I'm not familiar with their other music, but Ne mogu skriti svoju bol definitely highlights their artistry, along with the dark-pop take Yugoslavia had in 1970s Eurovision.
This song was initally my fifth place of 1976, but it has steadily grown until it became my fourth (knocking out Portugal in the process) The instrumentation conveys a dark mood, despite the upbeat strings and the poppy sound. There’s a grooviness in it to contrast the sullen lyrics, mourning for a lost love. It definitely stands out in the crowd; along with Ismeta's lack of makeup.
It got rewarded with a second-to-last place, which is way too low for this. And Yugoslavia withdrew for five years, and came back with a new sound...

#235: Zibbz -- Stones (Switzerland 2018)
"Sins of the father make us fall And I can’t do anything about it"
2018 had a number of staging errors which cost several countries qualification. In Stones' cases, this wasn't the case.
Corrine has incredible stage presence, with a sense of strength and attiude as she struts on the stage. She definitely adds substance to this powerful pop-rock song, fighting against bullying in all corners of society.
To further that, she lights a flare at the bridge, which definitely hits the tone of the song home. Plus, it was an awesome moment to behold.
Basically, Zibbz did everything right--great song, thoughtful message, simple but impactful staging, and it still didn't qualify...While it has outgrown me a bit, it's still a total jam.

#234: Kalomira -- Secret Combination (Greece 2008)
“An open book An open book, well, I'm sorry, I am not Sometimes I'm acting like a lady Sometimes woman, sometimes baby.”
"You maybe an open book Spongebob, but I'm a bit more complicated than that"
One third of the female-bop grouping in the 2008 contest, Secret Combination takes Greek instrumentation and American production to produce quite the gem. I could imagine Britney Spears singing this, but I also thought of the Cheetah Girls when I was listening to it. With a bit of sweetness and a touch of sexiness, Kalomira plays the different roles well--and has a cute moment when the book actually opens, revealing her in a really nice silvery dress!

#233: Avi Toledano -- Hora (Israel 1982)
"וגם ההורה, ההיא עם הה”א קולה עוד עולה, קולה לא נדם"
"And also the Hora, the one with the Hey Its voice still rises, its voice has not been silenced"
Israel had a particular style with songs from the 1980s--they are usually really energetic, with fun choreography in which everyone joins along. It makes for good results and good energy, especially when it's done well!
Hora seems to embody it in many ways, from the celebratory lyrics to the fun dancing across the really tiny stage in Harrogate. It combines Israeli folk music with a sense of joie-de-vivre, celebrating the nation (which as you will see later, may not work today...)
Avi earns himself a strong second place, but he would write something even better the following year (again, will come later)!
Personal and actual ranking: 2nd/18 at Harrogate
#232: Raphael Gualazzi -- Madness of Love (Italy 2011)
"Ma vedrai un altro me in un sogno fragile Riderai come se non ti avessi amato mai Cercherai un altro me oltre all’ombra di un caffè"
"But you’ll see another me in a fragile dream You’ll laugh as if I had never loved you You’ll look for another me beyond the shadow of a coffee"
Between 1994 and 2010, Italy withdrew from Eurovision, with only one participation in 1997. Nobody knows why, with reasons ranging from the rise of a televote to Italian disinterest in the contest, but they were certainly missed. Thanks to the late Rafaella Carra and a bunch of other circumstances, Italy came back in 2011, and they did so in style.
"Madness of Love" is frequently overlooked amongst Italy's post-comeback entries, as some of us aren't into jazz. I don't listen to the genre often, but I like this song particularly. It's flirty and sweet, under a very sophisticated soundscape which reminds me of a 1920s speakeasy. And while people are put off by Raphael's vocals, the way he lets himself go at the end of the chorus is definitely a highlight.
Basically, it's one of those runners-up that should've won against the winner of its year. But it was nicely made up for ten years later.

#231: Anneli Saaristo -- La dolce vita (Finland 1989)
“Minä sammutin elämän janoa vaan Minä osasin onnea anoa vaan Jälkeen kaiken nyt saatan sen sanoa vaan La dolce vita”
“I was just quenching life’s thirst I knew how to plead for happiness After everything all I can say is: The good life”
La Dolce Vita sounds more stereotypically ”Spanish” than “Finnish”, because of its flamenco influences versus the dark pop or metal we expect from the country. Apparently, a lot of Finns travel south for vacations, which makes a bit more sense here.
Either way, it springs a bit of life and joy into a dark heart. It embraces life in its tropical vibe and Anneli’s deep vocals, and conveys a comfortable mood. Apparently, it was also known for Anneli's slight choreography, but I only noticed her standing during the instrumental.
It would be Finland’s last top ten result for many years, but the 7th place it got in Lausanne was deserved (and they should've done better, actually!). A fitting send-off for their long-time conductor Ossi Runne (RIP).
Personal ranking: 3rd/22 Actual ranking: 7th/22 in Lausanne
