Similarly, our sensitivity to bitter foods is largely associated with a gene called TAS2R38,40 and you can measure yours at home by picking up some paper test strips saturated with a chemical called 6-n-propylthiouracil41 (PROP), which are widely available online. About half the population finds these strips moderately bitter42 ("tasters"), while a quarter finds them unpalatably bitter ("supertasters"), and another quarter describes them as having no taste at all ("nontasters"). Supertasters also tend to have a higher density of taste buds,43 and although this might sound like a coveted foodie superpower, supertasters are likely to be pickier eaters44 and avoid things like coffee, wine, spirits, dark chocolate, and various fruits and vegetables (e.g., grapefruit, broccoli, kale) because they find them too bitter.

In fact, McDonald’s cares so much about uniformity and efficiency that they add a silicon-based polymer to the fryer oil to reduce splatter,15 which cuts down on cleaning time; called dimethylpolysiloxane, the same chemical is also used in head lice treatments, condom lubricants,16 and breast implants.17 How neat is that?

The Fall of the House of Usher
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023, USA)
Creator: Mike Flanagan (based on Edgar Allan Poe's works)
Directors: Mike Flanagan & Michael Fimognari
Mini-review:
Mike Flanagan has done it again: he's given us yet another show-stopping piece of horror television. While I must admit I didn't find The Fall of the House of Usher super scary, I just love the way Flanagan and his team tell their stories. There's just something so enthralling and bewitching about their work. And this one in particular is definitely one of their strongest productions so far. Even though the show tells you what's going to happen in the very first episode, it never feels boring or predictable, and it keeps you absolutely hooked. You feel the need to know how everything will play out. Also, they made the brilliant decision of taking elements from a lot of Poe's stories and poems, which adds to the richness of the writing. I'm seriously thinking of looking up all the material used, reading it, and watching the show again, just to catch all the easter eggs.
And that cast. Man, there's no way to properly describe just how good the acting is. Everyone is absolutely pitch perfect, but for me the MVPs were Carla Gugino (sometimes I feel like Flanagan is the only one who gives her the incredible roles her immense talent deserves), Bruce Greenwood and Kate Siegel. Last but not least, kudos to the production design department, cause the show looks stunning. The Fall of the House of Usher is the best possible ending for Flanagan collaborative relationship with Netflix, and I can't wait to see what he'll do from now on.

WC: STRANGE TALES #113
WC: STRANGE TALES #113
Of all of the early Marvel super hero titles, it must be said that STRANGE TALES was the one that seemed to be running on fumes the earliest. The title would get a little bit of a pick-me-up once Doctor Strange became a regular feature in its back pages, but before that, one gets the sense that editor Stan Lee wasn’t all that wild about featuring the Human Torch in solo adventures, and that…
