The design features one French door that opens the greenhouse up to the residence walkway and one terrace door that allows access to the fenced in garden. Awning windows line the rest of the structure and help facilitate heat gains by pulling in cool air as the heated interior air is expelled out the ridge vents. Practical and Unique Post-Apocalyptic Shelter Design Ideas for Fantasy Writers

 You've decided to destroy civilization in your fantasy novel? Sucks to be your character. Now let's make their situation a little better or worse but at the least unique, practical, and resourceful. 

Use What's Left Behind: The end of the world doesn't mean the end of human ingenuity. Think of what materials survived your apocalypse and how to reuse them. Crumbling skyscrapers can be reinforced and turned into vertical communities, or broken-down cars can be transformed into steel-tough barricades. Old school buses or train cars? 

The Importance of Defense: Your characters aren't the only ones who have survived. Threats lurk everywhere. Design shelters that have built-in defenses. Your skyscraper community may have drawbridges between floors, or your train car home can be easily detached and sped away in case of danger. Remember the secret exits!

Incorporate the Natural Environment: Trees, caves, and mountains offer robust options for post-apocalyptic shelter. A hollowed-out hillside, for example, provides cover from harsh weather and is easily defensible. Make sure the natural element isn't in a highly radioactive environment. The trunk of a massive, ancient tree could house an entire family. Underwater habitats in the middle of a lake or an ocean? 

Reinvention of Basic Utilities: How will your characters access fresh water, dispose of waste, or maintain a consistent food supply? A river or rainwater could be cleverly directed and filtered, or a salvaged solar panel can provide electricity for a makeshift greenhouse. Composting toilets aren't glamorous, but they get the job done. I may be too used to modern comforts because that last one is a big ew.

Adapting to Your Apocalypse: If you have a nuclear winter scenario, consider shelters with radiation shielding and heat sources. Alien invasion? Consider camouflage or underground dwellings. Zombie outbreak? Elevate your shelters; zombies can't climb! Well, I hope your zombies can't climb. If they do, you may be a sick unhinged person. Keep it up. Makes for better fiction.

Remember, It's Home: This is where your characters will spend a lot of time. Personalize these spaces to reflect the inhabitants. Maybe one character is obsessed with salvaging books, so there's a small library corner. Perhaps another is a mechanic, and there's a well-stocked tool area. Little details will make your post-apocalyptic shelters feel more like home. Or not. A lack of home-related details could add to a sense of impermanence. Having to pull up and run a lot, maybe leaving things behind in your haste, adds to the suspense.

I have plenty of other projects I should be working on BUT then Mochi started building a shop to fill in the huge wall of dirt between the greenhouse and the boardwalk by the water, and I became CONSUMED with the need to join in and decorate a bunch of tiny houses.... SO!! TOWNHOUSE TIME!! You can also see buildings that Boo (the lime green)and Mochi (the grey and prismarine shop) have been working on in that first image… there's still a bunch along the boardwalk that's under construction, too. I built three townhouses and decorated the upstairs of mochi's shop, many more images under the cut!!

The blue townhouse was the first one I made, with the exterior inspired pretty directly from mechitect's townhouse design tutorial.

it's pretty simple! It's when I started to discover alcoves are interesting with these tiny buildings, since you're sort of dependent on what the house next to you is doing. Oh, also, that painting is one of my custom maps.

The pink townhouse was a little more ambitious - this one has a little kitchen, an aquarium idea I got from klay_designs_mc on instagram and TWO tiny bedrooms (one for the grownups and one for the kids), which may seem very straightforward but actually i took a great deal of psychic damage arranging them to fit in this little 8x8 space

we have some kind of resource pack on our realm that makes every mob drop mob heads occasionally, and I just really like sticking them on shelves as like... some kind of toys or figurines or plushies.

Anyway, while I was excitedly showing my progress to my friends, Mochi asked if I'd be willing to decorate the upstairs of his flower shop -- the building next to my blue townhouse. He wanted it to be a living space above the shop, and mentioned that the large windows might be nice for a kitchen, and other than that left me to my own devices.

TREMENDOUSLY PROUD OF THIS ONE TBH...!!! bed design was inspired by a bluenerd tutorial, and the little hearts are as always inspired by my fav builder CroissantCat, though honestly my entire minecraft portfolio should just have "inspired by bluenerd and/or croissantcat" on the first page. (the lamps are those mob heads again btw -- you can do this with the existing skeleton heads, but if you HAVE glow squid heads like... WHY NOT USE THEM)

anyway at this point I had obviously completely lost my mind, so my third townhouse has an upstairs, a basement, a home office, AND a bathroom. (it wasn't going to have a bathroom originally, but Boo saw the downstairs and gasped in excitement b/c he thought it was a bathroom, sO LIKE.... OBVIOUSLY AFTER THAT I HAD TO ADD A BATHROOM)

Yes it looks like I did just crop a part of a continent to show you. Big chances I'm still gonna edit this but I AM MUCH HAPPIER. KRESTEN LOCH EXISTS GUYS !!!

A few things have been done to make everything make sense:

- In "Not in the Mood", the representative of Pittsford leaves in a little boat, which means my original design where Pittsford is landlocked is debunked.

- In "Pascal's Dragon", we get shipment from Neserdnia, implying it too has sea access. In "Day of the Animals", our team is on a feeble little cart ride on their way to Neserdnia. I have no idea how they thought they could go that far without a carriage at least, but assuming they're already on Neserdnian territory just on their way to where they actually want to go... Well. Canon is weird.

- The green, unnamed spots are unclaimed or unexplored areas.

- Kingdoms closer to Corona are warmer, whereas those closest to the Dark Kingdom are colder. Rakesh is the only area in the entirety of the cold-side that has farmlands thanks to Saporia's magic combined with the naturally fertile land of a volcanic area.

- The food that once was acquired only through Ingvarr (who got said food by using greenhouses designed to keep their crops alive despite the natural cold) could now be mass produced in the Dark Kingdom, feeding all of its population and having enough to sell off to neighboring kingdoms even cheaper than Ingvarr.

As Rakesh's farmlands grew, Ingvarr's economy crashed when their crops were no longer being sold in favor of Rakesh's cheaper ones. It led to many conflicts between the Dark Kingdom and Ingvarr, pushing the Dark Kingdom's people to continue training warriors to defend against Ingvarr's occasional attacks—which only stopped after the Exile during King Edmund's reign.

Ingvarr is now the main provider of food to Galcrest and the few Rakeshian villages that refused to leave the kingdom.

- The Great Tree and Demanitus' Maze became part of the Dark Kingdom territory about 1.5k years after the Great Saporia-Corona War.

- Demanitus' Tomb is technically located within Old Saporian territory; in modern days, it's considered within Coronan territory.

- The Spire, as well as Kresten Loch, are Galcrestian territory.

From Care to Cure and Back

Under the umbrella of the LINA platform a program From Care to Cure and Back was initiated by Ana Dana Beroš in collaboration with the Association of Architects of Istria (DAI-SAI). "Treat, cure and give care again", is the idea behind this program, says Ana Dana and stress how important is to deal with experimental publishing practices in architecture.

She is referring how care was and is missing in the formal education of architecture, in the form of a humanistic way of thinking and asking background questions, which primarily concern the users of buildings. With the construction of the state, public projects fell into the background. It became clear that we must learn from our own history, repair, preserve and take care together, and not build unnecessarily.

How will architecture change in the future?

ADB: It will change drastically. I ask myself all the time is it ethical to build anymore? Or should we be focusing on “the great repair” of the broken world? Or is it broken architecture, or mankind, or more than human environment? This question are arising because we were witnessing for more than half of century the capitalist modernity, with its emphasis on innovation, growth, and progress, its economic system based on consumerism and wasteful use, and profligacy, has led to a ruthless exploitation of humans and nature. 

Architecture has played a huge small part in this, as the statistics on greenhouse gas emissions and construction and demolition waste prove. As a counter-strategy to capitalism’s creative destruction, we should focus on the repair, in which nurturing and maintenance that should become the key strategies for the action.

This is not just mine thinking, the notions of care in architecture have been part of many international exhibitions starting from the Critical Care at the Architektur Zentrum in Viena curated by Elke Krasny and Angelika Fitz, the term The Great Repair was used by Milica Topalović and her team at ETH, then are here Pedagogies of the Broken Planet. This is how I see the future.

What does your critical spatial practice include? 

ADB: My critical spatial practice has components of artistic research, documentary filmmaking, curating, publishing/broadcasting, exhibition design, activism and post-disciplinary de-schooling. This is work that overlaps, diverges, converges, runs in parallel, in circles, and in many cases came before and goes beyond.

A whole multitude of practitioners and theorists have been developing work in an expanded field such as this, quite different perhaps from the one Rosalind Krauss identified in 1979. Critical spatial practice was coined by the theorist Jane Rendell in 2000s as a helpful way of describe projects located between art and architecture, that both critiqued the sites into which they intervened as well as the disciplinary procedures through which they operated.

Taking into account the wide spectrum of intellectual fields close to architecture and space - from urban anthropology to human geography - I consider connecting architecture with feminist theory crucial for the development of critical spatial practices. Gender-based analysis of architecture, its multiple forms of representation, where subjects and spaces are viewed as performatives and constructs, is aimed primarily at questioning the world around us.

Moreover, critical spatial practices are necessarily self-critical and tend to change society, in contrast to orthodox architectural practices that seek to maintain and strengthen the existing social and spatial order of inequality.

How is the LINA platform important for your development on architecture of care?

ADB: I have started Architecture of Care actually developing through the concept of Pedagogies of Care within the predecessor platform to LINA, the former Future Architecture. The Publishing School: Pedagogies of Care is an exploration on how we learn and produce knowledge collectively through emancipatory practices of care. The program builds upon the three Publishing Acts and their collective efforts in shaping unordinary publications, unlikely publics and unorthodox spatial imaginaries.

Can radio become again a media for architecture (like in the time of Wright) and in which way you work with it?

ADB: Regarding the radio, as a powerful architectural tool, or to the media that architecture uses, I can agree with many who say that architecture has nowadays become transmedial. We don’t create only in the offline dimension, in concrete and brick, but in the online sphere as well. All media are allowed, or rather necessary, to attain goals of architecture. I have been involved in radio forever as been working for Croatian radio HR3, I have been developing the Radio Schools with artists during the Pedagogies of Care. As our colleagues from dpr-barcelona we claim to this cover that radio is louder than bombs that relates to their motto.

Beside radio you work is also dedicated on documentary film?

ADB: My documentary work is dedicated both to architecture and migration topics. Within the Croatian Architects’ Association I have been leading, then co-leading a documentary project Man and Space and working as a scriptwriter on long feature documentaries dedicated to the life achievement laureates.

In pluriannual research on the relational reading of migrant bodies and migrant territories, conducted together with the artistic partner and cinematographer Matija Kralj Štefanić, we have been departing from nonrepresentational theories, the practices of witnessing that produce knowledge without contemplation. The experimental documentary trajectory builds on previous investigations in the Mediterranean: in reception camps (Contrada Imbriacola, Lampedusa), hotspots (Moria, Lesbos), makeshift camps (Idomeni, Greece), urbanized camps (Dheisheh, Palestine), city refugees (Mardin, Turkey), and, recently, in the Balkans, where we live.

We refined methods of producing critical, nonrepresentational images, and of gathering and documenting evidence found in borderscapes, in order to make a transmedial and migratory archive, a border documentarism, that is in constant articulation. After the pandemic, from mute images of migrants’ residuals that speak for themselves, we have started creating a polyphony of protagonists of migrant origin and those involved in the No Border movement in a documentary series Three-Voiced: Stories on the Move, broadcast in Croatia. As a contemporary response to the rise of fascist phenomena in Europe, In the era of fetishizing borders and territorialization of bodies, it was crucial to start resonating in a new voiced register for topics that are not heard, or rather systematically not listened to in our societies.

It is just one of many attempts at confronting structures of silencing, asking: Can we, through collective vibration, transform silence into a path of newfound hope and solidarity?

How Intermundia opened an important topic of transmigration in Europe?

ADB: Back in 2014, Intermundia research project questioned alternating border-scapes of trans-European and intra-European migration. The focus was put on the Italian island of Lampedusa, metonymy for contemporary Western conditions of confinement. For me, back then it was clear that the dominant discourses on illegal migration obscure the role of international migration as a regulatory labour market tool. It was important to stress that migrants must be conceived primarily as workers, not only as immigrants. It seemed that, in the pre-pandemic times of constant mobility, involuntary territorial shifts of the precarious workers was parallel to the detention of undesired migrants.

Instead of observing Lampedusa as a consolidated institution of the waiting room, as a jailed zone in the middle of conflict, Intermundia attempted a post-human perspective in order to investigate the ambivalent state of in-betweenness. I was aware of the impossibility of cultural translation of such a condition, the understanding of the Other, so the project Intermundia, exhibited and awarded at the Architecture Biennial in Venice 2014, challenged visitors to immerse themselves into a coffin-like light and sound installation. Inducing Verfremdungseffekt, the project asked for solemnity and re-action, and not simply empathy.

I am not sure Intermundia opened the important topic of migration in Europe, but for sure it was a predecessor to the summer of migration in 2015, with the great influx of migrants, refugees and the formation of the so-called Balkan Route.

ADB: I dare to say that the fundamental task architecture has is to articulate spatial thinking, thinking capable of asking questions about burning issues of our society in a different way, hence of also creating a different reality. Architecture must offer a space for understanding of the existential condition of an individual and of society, and must also construct a foundation for a life with dignity. We know who we are, and where we belong, precisely through human constructions, both material and intellectual.

Ana Dana Beroš (b. 1979) is an architect based in Zagreb, but often explores contested borderscapes of Europe and beyond. Co-founder of ARCHIsquad - Division for Architecture with Conscience and its educational program UrgentArchitecture in Croatia. Her interest is architectural theory, experimental design and publishing as spatializing practice led her to co-found Think Space (2010-2015) and Future Architecture (2016-2021) international platforms, and currently LINA (2022-2025). The LINA member DAI-SAI ongoing project From care to cure and back, under her curation, explores critical architectural heritage on the case of The Children’s Maritime Health Resort of Military Insured Persons in Krvavica, and encourages transformation of both material and immaterial environments from spaces of a common disease into places of common healing. Wren, the city made of stone.

FMP: Contemporary/Modern/Brutalist Architecture

Ideas - Here we have the final piece, a combination of ideas and improvisation. This architectural model depicts what it would be like to live in a typical city dominated by brutalist/modern architecture, a utopian future if you will.

The reason why I named the city Wren names after a small bird is that it all symbolises rebirth, immortality and protection which is important for three reasons, the people who choose to live in this city wish for a clean fresh start in life, the stone city has connotations of being immortalise since stone structures will probably long outlive humans and protection because as well as being immortalised, you can also add a feeling of protection behind sophisticated stone walls. We can even go a step further and infer that it’s a haven, protection from the broken and corrupt outside world.

Here I’ve designed an office building to have parts jutting out just for some added style, a train station which I’ve highlighted by using the white straw instead of the stirrers and some apartments buildings next to the highway; as you can see for the highway that there are two levels to increase transportation and decrease traffic. Also at the far back you’ll see a greenhouse this is because I wanted to emphasise a point on making a utopian city that gave back to the earth, I designed the greenhouse in such a way as to represent the important work being done inside so I made it look as unique and as futuristic as possible using white straws.

The office building to the far left that the train tracks run through is connected via two walkable bridges with benches running along them offering the employees a chance to gaze upon the view of the city from above. Also practically thinking, it is also easier for the people to traverse from building to building without necessarily having to go to the ground floor.

The reason why I’ve designed the apartments and office buildings in such a jagged way is to represent how it’s meant to be natural like a mountain, now of course it was humans that made it but its the inspiration from the nature around us and how ticks naturally form which gave me this idea to design the buildings in such a way.

My main goal with making this improvised city instead of model houses using the 3d printer is that I wanted to stick to the idea of giving back to the earth, making a sustainable eco-friendly city with a very low production of carbon emissions. A city which would be the ideal utopia for what we’d want to strive for as a civilisation with green energy and solar panels, and of course the added touch of brutalist architecture as I believe it’s possible for technology to work with the earth not against it.

Practice 2_1.2 - Inspiration - Sifu

Cutting Edge

Released 8th February 2022 by Sloclap, Sifu looks and feels very sophisticated and modern. Featuring smoothly animated characters, with painterly textures (possibly cel-shaded?) and some absolutely stunning uses of colour temperature and cinematic camera-work all punctuated by an absolutely thumping soundtrack. Alongside this the game has one of the most expansive movelists in the genre, satisfying feedback, clear audio cues and a ramping adaptive difficulty system that will challenge you no matter how masterful you are. It looks and feels amazing and if it wasn't for the fiddliness of some of the directional inputs and a sometimes openly antagonistic camera I would dare to call it perfect.

Punchy Pacing

Sifu delivers it's narrative very concisely. It seems to understand the simplicity of it's idea and seeks to immerse you through it's infectious momentum. It keeps the beats coming, gets you into gameplay quickly and guides you through level design, lighting, music and creative transitions.

Setpiece Locations

Due to the game's structure you will end up visiting the same levels multiple times. And before it's 'Arena' update only featured 5 playable levels. Luckily Sifu's levels are so meticulously considered, that putting the tenement assault from The Raid, with the hallway fight from OldBoy and the greenhouse confrontation from I saw the Devil all into the first level alone doesn't make the game feel like it's just references stitched together. Not only does this show that the developers of the game know their stuff when it comes to action cinema, it also means that you are thrown from one tense meaningful encounter punctuated by visual set-pieces to another with very little downtime. It really nails that sense of "this is a great place to have a fight" again and again. And in this sense the low number of levels doesn't feel like a detriment as every level is absolutely chockful of the cream of the crop of action cinema. Additionally there are collectibles to discover as well as some shortcuts that allow you to take completely different paths through the level with multiple playthroughs.

Martial Mastery

Sifu is a game of layers. I beat the game on release after 22 hours, yet I wouldn't get the last achievement (including Arenas) until 100 hours later. In that time the way I played the game changed significantly and irreversibly at least 3 times. This is the closest a video game has ever come to the experience of refining a martial art. When you first beat the game, if you're anything like me, you'll only be using around 35% of your moveset. By the time you beat the game on Master difficulty you'll be using most of it. But if you want to get 3 stamps on 'Facing Liming Hui' in Arena mode, you'll need it all!

Now Experiencing: College Tours

My sister, and my cousin, are in college right now. Honestly, they are doing college the way I wished I had done college. As I am no longer a student, always in my mind but not stuck to one institution, I am helping them both and getting to relive my college experience through them.

My Background:

I did very well in elementary school, middle school, and high school. I graduated a scholar with honors from Edison High School. Early in my high school experience, I fell in love with FIDM. I remember, I was in a class researching colleges and looked at all the flags on the wall and at the end was a boot. What the boot? I have a very good knack for design and fashion and building and branding. I got accepted my 2nd year of high school. My first year of college was a massive slap in the face. I should of switched majors to marketing, but I stuck to it. I use parts of my degree today, but I have a couple of regrets on how I went about my college experience. What I would do differently if I could:

I would try a class in high school or even community college during summer and see if you really like it or the idea of it.

I would really shop around more, and ask students that actually went there what is true and not true about what the college claims to do.

At the end of the day, I use my college not in a direct way-any job I have had that was utilizing my direct experience got me fired. Funny I know. I ended up falling into the family legacy of real estate and have done well for myself all things considered.

My College Experience (Living Vicariously):

I graduated college in 2012, that is now 12 years ago. My younger family members are currently in community college. One wants to get into accounting and the other wants to get into a plant major. So, when my sister was like, "Tour colleges?" "Hell Yeah!". I skipped that step, at least actually comparing colleges. We toured 3, me with two different majors in mind:

UCI: University of California Irvine-Now, I am sure this is a great school. But to me and my sister-this felt like a bad movie set of a movie we did not want to watch. Huge campus, walking tour of almost 2 hours. Growing and under construction too. I was ok with it for my cousin, they had a great looking greenhouse. But I was meh for my sister. We had to pay for parking.

CPP: Cal Poly Pomona: I had my BIL friend graduate from here and already knew of it and was so excited for this one after Irvine. It is a great fit for either accounting or plants. It was so pretty. It was a very good price, not much more than Fullerton but less than Irvine. I believe parking was free for this one.

UCF: University of California Fullerton-We were actually going to just go with Pomona but an associate of mine said to at least consider Fullerton. For accounting, the piece of paper is so much more important-plus all the aspects that modern employers demand of young working youth. Fullerton is in a great location, good size school, good budget, and so much bang for your buck. You had to pay for parking.

Why were we looking at these? These are the schools that they can get into with an AA (special for transfer). Things I was considering was: how likely were they going to be involved in activities, the people that would be around them, the education itself, the location compared to where they live, the price. I love Fullerton for my sister and Pomona for my cousin. It was also kind of funny, kind of sad, but so many parents were there with their kids for the tours! I don't remember mine doing that, and me and my sister were usually the only non parent child group. But I had a blast doing it, and I suggest everyone shop around when making a decision that will change, for better or worse, the rest of your life. I would gladly do that for anyone that needs it again!
