Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites
- In this edition: Bob Dylan; Mickey Hart; Leonard Cohen; & Faces
DYLAN RELEASES COMPILATION TO AVOID PUBLIC DOMAIN: Bob Dylan quietly released a Europe-only compilation titled 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 to prevent the recordings from entering the public domain.
The 28-song set was recorded during the sessions that produced Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, per Forbes magazine, which reported on the LP being released “in very limited quantities.”
MEET THE MIRACLES: Mickey Hart will perform under the Mickey and the Miracles banner at the Dead Ahead festival in Mexico.
Presumably a one-off, the group features percussionists Giovanni Hidalgo and Karl Perazzo; guitarist Derek Trucks and bassist Isaac Eady of the Tedeschi Trucks Band; former Dead & Company drummer Jay Lane; and Hart on “cosmic sounds,” per a statement.
Dead Ahead is slated for Jan. 12-15, 2024.
NATIONAL SYMPHONY TO HONOR LEONARD COHEN: Madison Cunningham, Ben Folds, Bill Frisell, Don Henley, J.D. Souther and Susan Tedeschi and her husband, the aforementioned Trucks, are among the musicians scheduled to join the National Symphony Orchestra for Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen.
The show is scheduled for April 26, 2024, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
FACES THE MUSIC: Faces will be the subject of a 2024 reissue campaign featuring “a wealth” of previously unreleased material, Mojo magazine reports.
Per the band’s archivist: “When I say there’s a wealth of unreleased material – there’s a wealth of unreleased material … there’s rehearsals, outtakes, unreleased songs, session multitracks, you name it.”

Last night, I went to see the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. As far I knew, we were going to listen to pieces by Brahms and Elgar. What I did not expect was to learn about a contemporary Latina composer named Tania León and hear her work called “Pasajes.” Parts of it feel almost discordant to me, but even that was extremely stimulating.
Here I’ve linked a different performance of the same piece.

I had the great opportunity to see this concert live at the Kennedy Center in May. It was an astounding event! The arrangements of Vince Mendoza are always wonders to behold.

Taking a slide down the rabbit hole of "Disney Princess - The Concert" videos from Spring 2022 and getting excited for the upcoming FALL tour!
This vid (by Shannon Collins on YouTube) is from The Kennedy Center in DC with The National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Steven Reineke and music directed by our Benjamin Rauhala! Hello! It wasn't technically part of the Spring tour but an add on of sorts. I was able to be there, and it was just magical!

Song Review: Aoife O’Donovan with the National Symphony Orchestra - “River” (Live)
Aoife O’Donovan’s voice was the focus when she performed Joni Mitchell’s “River” with the National Symphony Orchestra.
The just-released professional video from “Next at the Kennedy Center” finds O’Donovan making a song for all seasons out of Mitchell’s quasi-Christmas number as the orchestra backs her with a lush arrangement that owes almost nothing to Mitchell’s original piano melody.
This leaves O’Donovan to take ownership. And she does - emphasizing Mitchell’s lyrics with facial expressions and hand gestures and extending notes at the high end of her range.
It’s an exquisite display and follows O’Donovan’s take on “Woodstock,” also a joint shared with the NSO.
Grade card: Aoife O’Donovan with the National Symphony Orchestra - “River” (Live) - A

For reasons that are unimportant, I was looking for a choir-backed version of My Heart Will Go On and came across this one from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and... y'all
Y'all
This is amazing. The lead singers? Perfection. The arrangement? Perfection. I was crying.
Then I see in the description: This performance was a part of the film music concert Hollywood Gala.
'scuse me?
I fell down a rabbit hole.

1. Are you an albums person or a singles person?
generally "singles"! I take, judge, and sort songs one by one. Only a very, very few albums do I consider as wholes. Usually I just steal and repurpose my favorite songs from them.
