finished watching snw and anyway I'm just thinking about Pike being unable to sleep post-ep10 unless he has his hand over Spock's heart to reassure himself he's still alive and well in this universe. and Spock just holding him, stroking small circles on his back to comfort him, aware that he has limited time with his captain but them both determined to make the most of every moment until then

Kiff Review
Tumblr media
Kiff is a musical comedy animated series by Lucy Heavens and Nic Smal. They are known for their work in the animation industry, either script writing, storyboarding, or voice acting. This post will have spoilers.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the twenty-seventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on March 27, 2023.
The plot of Kiff focuses on a young flying squirrel named Kiff Chatterley (voiced by Kimiko Glenn), who is friends with a mellow bunny named Barry Buns (H. Michael Croner) in a magical land, within the mountains, known as Table Town. Both go on adventures in and around the town.
Like other Disney series airing this year, Kiff is aimed at kids and families. This is clear from the format, similar to many episodes of Amphibia, Milo Murphy's Law, and Phineas and Ferb. Each 22-minute episode is divided into two 11-minute segments. In typical Disney fashion, there is a musical number in almost every episode.
Apart from the animating powerhouse of Disney Television Animation, a well-known animation studio, Titmouse, is producing the series. The same studio is known for series such as Cleopatra in Space, Star Trek: Lower Decks, The Midnight Gospel, Q-Force, Inside Job, Pantheon, My Dad the Bounty Hunter,  The Legend of Vox Machina, Fairfax, and Chicago Party Aunt.
Many of the voice actors in Kiff are well-experienced. Glenn previously voiced Paperstar in Carmen Sandiego, Katherine-Alice in Welcome to the Wayne, Tomiko in Elena of Avalor, and Nomi in Dogs in Space, to name a few roles. Deedee Magno Hall, who voices Deer Teacher in the series, is best known for voicing Pearl in Steven Universe. Furthermore, James Monroe Iglehart and Lauren Ash, who voice Kiff's parents, prominently voiced characters in series such as Tangled, Helluva Boss, Elena of Avalor, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
Keen listeners might recognize Rachel House, voice of Barry's mother, or Nichole Sakura, voice of Barry's sister. Both had prominent voice roles in Moana and OK K.O.!: Let's Be Heroes. Personally, I was familiar with voice actors Katie Crown and Rhys Darby because they voiced characters in Cleopatra in Space. The former also voiced Ivy in Amphibia. Furthermore, Darby voiced a variety of characters in Milo Murphy's Law, We Bare Bears, Welcome to the Wayne, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and Infinity Train. It was great to hear Vella Vowell, who voices Candle Fox, again. I remembered her impressive voice acting as Princess Mermista in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and as the No Tattoo Barista (which later turned into a CBD Monster) in the lesser-known Magical Girl Friendship Squad.
Kiff snagged the well-regarded Eric Bauza and Tom Kenny. From my years of watching animated series, I was familiar with Bauza as Scoops in Ollie & Scoops, as well as Kenny for two roles: Ice King in Adventure Time and Yancy Fry in Futurama. In this series, Bauza voices Reggie and a scrupulous TV producer named Roy Fox, while Kenny voices multiple characters in the series. A stand-up comedian named Josh Johnson also voices Barry's brother, Harry.
youtube
The show's animation is expressive and colorful. However, it pales in comparison to Amphibia, The Owl House, or Adventure Time. In some ways, Phineas and Ferb is put together better, as is Milo Murphy's Law. All in all, the show is a bit funny, but not laugh-out-loud funny. Drama is more a strong suit for the series than comedy.
The first twelve episodes of the series are double-episodes. They introduce viewers to the characters, allowing you to get a feeling for their lives. More than anything, they make it clear that Kiff is not serialized like Steven Universe, Tangled, or Milo Murphy's Law (especially the second season). Instead, each episode seems in its own world, without being connected to another. If some rumors are correct about upcoming Hailey's On It! and Iwaju, it appears that Disney series are moving in this direction. This is evidenced by the fact that the recently aired Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur uses serialized storytelling.

However, the recently aired Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur uses serialized storytelling as does the upcoming Hailey's On It! and Iwaju, if reports are correct.
Kiff has some elements reminding me of the Futurama episode openings, like fake adverts at the beginning of each episode. At the same time, the series is different than what has come before since the show creators, Heavens and Smal, who voice characters in the series, are from Cape Town, South Africa. As a result, their life-stories are undoubtedly integrated into the series itself. Furthermore, the show's directors include animators for Black Dynamite, 6Teen, and Amphibia, with this career experience enhancing the show even more.
The series emphasizes the importance of acceptance, friendship, self-worth, and notoriety. The latter is shown in the extreme by Roy Fox, who makes trashy reality shows in order to profit from people's misery. In a manner similar to the focus on education in many anime series, Kiff seems to imply that education is important to achieving your dreams and that school shouldn't be skipped, no matter what. This stands diametrically opposed to what is shown in Birdie Wing: Eve, one of the show's protagonists, is a terrible student, but remains at the premiere golf academy because she is a sports star.
There are many other themes focused in Kiff. For instance, the episode "Career Day", when Kiff and Barry get a part-time job at city hall, implies that mass records destruction is fine as long as you cut through the "red tape". This contrasts with commentary about overly technical bureaucracy in Hilda and Futurama, to name two series. Such a negative theme in "Career Day" is offset by episodes which accentuate family togetherness and honesty.
As a person who has reviewed media with libraries and librarians in pop culture since July 2020, and with a MLIS degree, it should be no surprise one of my favorite episodes of Kiff was "Club Book". In he episode, Kiff learns the value of quietness in the library after turning the library into a club scene. I thought it was interesting that the librarian, voiced by Aparna Nancherla, is made more relatable than most. Her character, Miss Moufflé, somewhat bucking stereotypes, while reinforcing them at the same time, as she shushes people but also likes souffles.
Similar to other series, the value of libraries as a place of knowledge and learning is affirmed in Kiff. In some ways, the episode reminded me of the "Quiet Riot" episode of The Replacements, in which the show's protagonist, Todd, causes the shushing librarian in charge of the school library replaced by a rockstar. However, he later regrets his decision, resulting in the original librarian returning to her job.
youtube
Currently, Kiff is almost half-way through its series order of 30 episodes. It is hard to know where the series will go from here. Even so. I am more optimistic about this series than Hamster & Gretel, which has fallen flat, despite the fact that Dan Povenmire is the show's creator. Instead, the series has episodes somewhat mimicking absurdity and, even hilarity (to an extent), which are present in Phineas and Ferb. The latter, in fact, was recently renewed for more two seasons.
Even so, Kiff will probably never measure-up to the strength of four-season animated magical comedy powerhouse of Phineas and Ferb, a series even mentioned in an episode of Better Things, a comedy-drama by Pamela Adlon, who voiced some characters in the series. Despite this, Kiff will chart its own path, perhaps different than what has come before. After all, both creators are said to be a "brilliant creative team".
Although Disney has recently removed release dates from the upcoming Tiana and Moana series, clearly Kiff is part of a trend by the company to feature more diverse series. This year is bound to bring series such as Iwáju and Hailey's On It!, while there are others in production such as Cookies & Milk and Primos.
It is further possible that Disney is producing Molly Ostertag's Neon Galaxy, a series reportedly about a trans princess. In any case, diverse series are on the horizon for Disney, especially more than HBO Max, a network which has been struggling to find its corporate identity since David Zaslav became CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate. It is said that the streaming service has Iyanu: Child of Wonder and Lumberjanes in production.
The first 12 episodes of Kiff are currently airing on Disney+ and all twelve episodes have aired on the Disney Channel. Four new episodes will air on the Disney Channel on April 1st and later be added on Disney+.

Here's some random movie recommendations for you accursed beafts:
Ginger Snaps (2000): if you liked Jennifer's Body, you'll probably like this. It has a lot of the same themes but with a more sisterly bonding bend. Personally I liked it more than JB.
Being John Malkovich (1999): Okay so you want to talk about Ego Death? You want to meditate on identity? This movie assaults you with so much absurdity that the overarching message is the only thing that makes sense.
La Llorona (2019) ((NOT the Curse of La Llorona, we are talking about the Guatemalan film)): This movie is very slow, still, and steady. There are no jump scares, really. The film is a long slow build up of dread but in like a positive way? It's a horror movie about women and the power structures men put them into.
Smoke Signals (1998): You ever have complicated feelings about your dad, lol? Watch this. Bonus points for being a film made by indigenous americans
Sound of Metal (2020): Man loses a connection to something he built his life around so it all starts crumbling. You'll cry.
Perfect Blue (1997, yes the anime movie): I know, Satoshi Kon yadda yadda it's already a well known movie. This psych thriller anime is yet another meditation on identity and how we try to change ourselves to please others or change others to please ourselves.
Microcosmos (1996): This is the single best insect documentary I have ever seen. There is no narration after the first minute, you real close macro footage of bugs. Even without words, you can watch their world unfold before you and it just Makes sense.
Samsara (2011): In the same vein as microcosmos, this doc is a wordless meditation on humanity. You'll see all kinds of fascinating cultural events unfold before you. It really makes you feel connected to other humans.
Warsha (2022): This one's a short film. There is something about finding bliss even in the face of oppression
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979): The poster is literally the pride flag. The pride flag which came out one year before thin movie did. But really, this movie is VERY slow. Which is to its benefit. They really let you sit and think about what is happening in front of you. I don't know, the performances in this film are immaculate. It gets a lot of hate for how slow it is but if you let the movie take over, it WILL fill you with the intended sense of simultaneous fear of the unknown and curiosity about that unknown. Trepidation? Also it's a very good love story about two parallel romances.
Pig (2021): Nicholas Cage in a slow burner about the past and how we try to run from it. About how we can never escape it either. How to we cope with that? Maybe Nic can show us.

Of course! I’ve always been into Star Trek so you can ramble about any of the characters! I’ve just never watched the shows beyond Voyager

honestly i don’t know how i feel about strange new worlds. i cried at least every other episode. im in love with every single character. i binged the entire season in (almost) one day. knowing this is a prequel to TOS, the idea of now watching TOS makes me grrrr arf bark just because ive become so attached to these characters and this style of show so quickly and im worried TOS will be a shock to my system with it’s 60s... aura. i know star trek isn’t going to just fade from my mind  so the logical (lol) next choice would be to swallow whatever apprehension i feel and just go for it. but my entire insides feel scrambled after that season and it makes me sorely disappointed that im not a fan of spock/chapel because it appears most snw fics are that ship. L i guess. great fuckin show thank u to nic for guiding me on where to start

[ send a " ⭐ " and i will list muses i would be interested in throwing at yours ]
[ asked by @muutos ]
this one took a while to get to bc i realized how much i wanted birdie to interact with some of ur muses and then got distracted with trying to set up her blog and stuff but im here to answer this now hopefully . my brain is still all over the place please excuse me
[formatting is "your muse - my muse(s) i would like to see with them"]
vanessa - sb verse mikey :] torment this little shit. because the concept of these two interacting is so fucking hilarious im so happy the movie brought it up and this way it doesnt even have to be movieverse. also i NEED her and birdie to interact so so so bad im trying so hard to finish up birdies sideblog its taking forever but i wanted the chance to give them a lil separate space to themselves. uh who else. i have glambun and cassie of course, she can have fun with them, and joshton also has a sb verse!! i know i never talk about him but id love love love to introduce him with vanessa or one of ur other muses
henry emily - cmon. i love your henry so much id willingly throw literally ANY of my muses at him i <3 him. ive already spent eons talking abt how much i love the potential dynamic between him and michael because i DO, so so so much. also just like i said to nic, he can interact with literally any of my animatronics whenever. i NEED interactions with him and lefty there is something so personal about those two. and of course ciarán goes without saying. your henry already gave him too much attention (like. literally one [1] positive sentence so far) and hes already hooked. good luck getting rid of that fucker. hes never letting go. sorry you shouldve known better than to be sweet with him (/lh)
mangle - im ngl i would love to have interactions with them and one of my withered animatronics. or jeremy, yknow,,, before Shit Goes Bad. could be fun. joshton Also has a verse where he works in the fnaf 2 location because i just kinda stick him wherever he would fit so if you wanna use it to traumatize the poor little minimum wage worker go right ahead i think itd be real funny
freddy fazbear - b..bonnie... thats it just bonnie i want the classic duo back i dont care what era. also if you want him to torment mike or josh theyre always up for it, as has been mentioned multiple times
roxanne wolf + glamrock freddy - lumping them together because theyd be interacting with about the same characters. same list as vanessa!!! its so funny because i wasnt interested in sb at ALL before ruin / interacting with you and ur little corner of the rpc and now im. fucken entangled in it. help.
vincent demarco - weve talked abt my interest in him before but like i said every time you rb some musings about him or something i go a little insane. also did you know his birthday is literally one day before mine i just realized it when i checked his bio page. anyway i really wanna toss like. ciar or josh or someone at him at some point just to see what would happen. he just intrigues me i just wanna see whats goin on in that brain of his idk idk
these arent really specific muse matchups but. every time i see you play like. stu or gwen or ar'alani i lose my mind a little and get reminded of all the muses from their medias i could pick up but i have to stop myself bc thats so much WORK. the star wars fixation would be enough to overpower it and make me find someone to interact with ar'alani if it werent for the fact that i havent managed to get my hands on the thrawn books yet and ive never watched star trek so i dont know anything about your interpretation and it makes me so so so upset. anyway this is an open offer (that may not make sense if you havent watched star wars rebels) but if you would like i would pick up ezra bridger to interact with her in a HEARTBEAT. it wouldnt matter how fucking clueless i am because hes clueless as shit too. i am so so sorry if this sounds overbearing or something i do NOT mean for it to be i have just been wanting to play these star wars muses for YEARS now. the star wars community is just so much more terrifying than this little group here. so the fact that someone that i know and trust and have written with before has even Somewhat of a star wars muse has. driven me a little bit insane. (/pos) this is all /nf of course im just. yeah 👍 this probably makes no fucking sense im sorry i am unwell about star wars

Hello sweetheart,
You’re headcanons give me some solace during these crazy times. I was wondering if you could do headcanons about what kinds of movie genres the boys would be into. I think you would have some creative ideas for them.
Hi darling, thank you for the request & i’m sorry it’s come a little late. I hope you enjoy! ❤️
Warnings: no warnings, other than themes of a sexual nature in Oberyn’s!
This isn't showing up in tags so REBLOGS are appreciated!
Masterlist
The Pedro Boys & Their Favourite Genre of Movies
Din Djarin
Poor man hasn't watched a movie in his life. He wouldn't see the big deal over them, but that's because he's never spent time indulging in one. There is simply no way of telling what his preference of genre would be!
Maxwell Lord
Maxwell loves older movies. He likes black and white movies, and Hollywood pieces from the 50s. It was those movies that gave him the stereotypical vision of America when he was younger. They inspired him and planted a sense of ambition within him. He loves the glamour of it all, and the traditional story telling. He's definitely one for the classics. Marilyn Monroe. James Dean. Audrey Hepburn. etc.
Frankie Morales
Please don’t k*ll me, but Frankie likes typical male saviour movies. Ones with fighting and shooting and ones where the protagonist always ends up with the girl in the end. He just gets lost in them and he thinks they're cool. He's not picky though, and he'll watch most things with you. That's just his preference.
Ezra
He likes movies based on history and literature. He also likes ones that are a little confusing and take a lot of contemplating. He likes think-pieces, and movies with open endings that he can interpret for himself. He's not someone for closure and he enjoys using his imagination to wonder what happens next.
Oberyn Martell
He loves drama movies. The ones with big, crazy plot twists and that have you yearning for more. The ones that make you audibly gasp in shock. Oberyn has an explicit fantasy too. He wants to watch a dirty movie with you and act out the scenes. He thinks it would make for a fun roleplaying game and it's an excellent way to spice up what's going on in the bedroom.
Marcus Pike
He loves those cheesy Hallmark romance movies. The ones that always repeat on day-time television. He's not ashamed about liking these movies either. He indulges in them often and finds them so comforting. He hopes one day he can find a romance just like the romances presented in those films.
Javier Peña
Poor Javier doesn't really get the chance to watch movies. If he's paying attention to anything on the television, it'll be the news. If Javier liked anything though, it's movies from his childhood where the characters speak his native language. Reminicing on his youth through consuming media like this, is really comforting to Javi. It helps him escape from the harsh reality that is his life.
Max Phillips
I can't tell you what movie genres he loves, but I can tell you he hates Twilight with a burning passion. No, he actually hates that movie, and he is very vocal about it. "Vampires aren't even like that," he'll mutter, offering you a roll of his eyes. "This is stupid. This is dumb. Since when do vampires sparkle in the sunlight?"
Dave York
Whatever you do, don't check Dave's Netflix history. It's concerning, to say the least. He watches murder documentary after murder documentary. He indulges in how they did it, and specifically takes interest in how they got caught. He's not really interested in movies per-se. Sure he'll sit down with Alice and Molly and watch Zootopia, but his real interest lies in making himself become a better serial killer.
Jack Daniels
He loves spy movies. Honestly, his favourite is Spy Kids. He'll never tell you that though. Jack thinks of himself as some kind of James Bond, and everytime he watches a spy movie, he gets the urge to go out on some kind of secret mission and save the world. He'll parkour around the house. These movies bring him an air of confidence.
Marcus Moreno
He likes sci-fi. Things like Star Wars and Star Trek, and a little bit of fantasy too. He enjoys franchises like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. He's definitely a binge watcher and he loves to settle down over the weekend with Missy and just watch movie franchise with her. They'll eat a lot of popcorn and fast food and it's truly his favourite way to spend time with his daughter.
Javi Gutierrez
Oh cmon, Nic Cage movies. Can Nic Cage be a genre in himself? I think so. We also know that Paddington 2 is his all time favourite movie. I do think Javi loves kids movies. He knows that they'll always have a happy ending and they bring him a level of comfort. I think Javi suffers from anxiety, but watching Disney animated movies soothes him and helps him escape from reality.

CW: alcohol / drinking
“Wanted to be an astronaut,” the stranger says, after knocking back the last of her beer. Nic watches her as she slams the glass down, black tank top showing her muscles all the way up to the shoulder. “Fuckin’ asthmatic, aren’t I? ‘S what I get for growing up in Birmingham. Shit for lungs.”
Nic laughs, tearing their eyes from the stranger’s bicep. “To be fair, most kids who want to go to space never make it there.”
“Well, yeah,” the stranger concedes, a bit of teeth showing with a crooked grin, dark eyes crinkling. “Most don’t study astrophysics just to get a bit closer, though.”
“True. Some just watch sci-fi and dream.”
The stranger grunts and shrugs. Conversation stalls. Nic stares at the empty beer glass, condensation speckling its smooth surface like freckles on a cheek.
“You alright?” says the stranger. Her gruff voice is softer than it’s been all night.
Nic rubs a hand over their face and, yep, they’re crying. “Sorry,” they mumble, taking a deep breath, blinking hard. “I’m alright. I – lost someone.” Not dead, they want to explain – but really, how would they know? “He loved space, and sci-fi, and,” they laugh again, more shakily, through the tears, “would have thought you were so cool.”
“I am cool,” the stranger says with a cocky smile. Then her expression softens, and she rubs Nic’s back. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“No idea,” they say, scrubbing their eyes. The stranger passes them a bar napkin. They find they’re talking anyway. “He was a, a nerd, I guess. Not a big fan of people, n-not really into socialising. He was happy if he could stay in all day at the computer, watching things and coding stuff, playing video games with his online friends. Old, goofy sci-fi like, Doctor Who, Star Trek and st-stuff. Adventures. He wanted to go to the m-moon when he was a kid.”
 “Sounds cool.”
“So cool,” Nic agrees, fresh tears rushing to their eyes. “Clever, good at s-solving problems or, or fixing things. Fixed my computer enough times. Couldn’t,” another weak chuckle, “couldn’t do public speaking to save his life, but when I-I got him alone, we talked f-for hours.”
The stranger’s hand keeps rubbing their back, gentle despite her brusque, butch manner.
“Always full of trivia, too, like,” they sniffle, “like how old TVs worked o-or weird maths things, s-sometimes it’d be a fact an-nd sometimes, he’d set m-me up and, it’d be a pun or s-something.” They’re smiling so wide even as their voice is choked with sobs. They give into the urge to cry for a minute, little choked sobs coming from behind their hands, and the stranger doesn’t move.
“Sorry,” they say again, when they can speak again. “I-It’s a weird thing to d-do when you first meet someone.”
“Sounds like you needed it. Anyway, we met a few hours ago, so it’s fine.”
That’s true, they suppose. They hadn’t spoken, exactly, because of other people and other friends, and Nic was still kind of new to this theatre group. But the numbers had dwindled as they’d started chatting, and it had been at least two hours of just them.
“Don’t even kn-know your name,” they point out.
“Addison Lee,” the stranger says. “Or, Iz, really. All the others call me that, so you can too.”
“I’m Nic,” they return. “And I’m – not normally such a, a mess.”
Iz nudges them. “Apology not accepted. Go be a mess. Be a mess with me anytime. Alright?”
They nod. They cry again. Iz rubs their back, and gives death glares to anyone who looks their way.
