Viking art, also known commonly as Norse art, is a term widely accepted for the art of Scandinavia and Viking settlements further afield—particularly in the British Isles and Iceland—during the Viking Age of the 8th-11th centuries CE. Vendel ravens ring Metal: sterling silver (925) Weight: approx. 20 g (0,7 oz)
The Vendel era is right before the viking ere which spanned from 793 AD - 1042 AD (Sometimes set to 850 AD - 1050 AD). The Vendel era started 550 AD and ended 793 AD and was right after the Migration Period.
Ravens and their deep connection to Odin permeate the realms of Norse mythology and Viking lore. From ancient artwork to captivating tales, these enigmatic birds leave an indelible mark on the tapestry of Norse culture.
One can glimpse Odin's affinity for ravens in the visual arts. An array of artifacts, such as a 6th-century bracteate and a 7th-century helmet plate from Vendel, Sweden, depict figures often identified as Odin, flanked by a pair of birds. These avian companions serve as a poignant symbol of his divine presence.
In the rich tapestry of Norse mythology, Odin stands adorned with the loyalty of two ravens—Huginn and Muninn. Huginn, representing thought, and Muninn, personifying memory, take flight from their perch atop Hliðskjálf, Odin's celestial seat. With keen sight and sharp senses, they traverse Midgard, the realm of humans, and return each day to deliver news to the Allfather.
The raven's allure extends beyond the realm of Odin himself. The Vikings, captivated by their mystique, embraced the raven as a cherished symbol. Ragnar Lodbrok, a legendary Viking figure, commanded the Reafan, a raven banner embroidered with the likeness of these majestic birds. Its fluttering presence in battle augured victory, while stillness foretold defeat.
Not to be outdone, King Harald Hardrada brandished his own raven banner, known as Landeythan, invoking fear and awe among his foes. Even beyond the Norse lands, the raven's influence reached far. In the folklore of the Isle of Man, once a Viking colony, the raven weaves its narrative thread, forever embedded in the cultural fabric as a symbol adorning the island's coat of arms.
Thus, the raven's association with Odin and the Vikings transcends time, leaving an everlasting legacy of wisdom, protection, and power.
