Came across a very unsettling image of someone 'scruffing' a possum pup. Newsflash they are actually choking the animal and causing possible lifelong damage for a photo op (the pup is in a very stiff position, it is drooling). Possum are not built to be carried that way- they are marsupials (pouched animals) and larger young cling to their mothers backs. At no point are they carried by their scruffs.
Its not cute. The pup is in distress. If you dont know how to properly handle an animal DO NOT HANDLE THAT ANIMAL.

As much as we Americans give guff (and rightfully so) to Europeans for being so weird about nature, let's not forget that Americans are super not immune to it either.
Americans insist constantly that coyotes are going to attack children (your child is exponentially more likely to be seriously injured by their own dog) or that coyotes lure dogs to their deaths by leading them into the waiting pack (your stupid idiot dog with no recall chased a pack of coyotes that fought back and suddenly the coyotes are at fault here?)
But the one that drove me insane the most was the guy who shot the first opossum to be documented this far north in hundreds of years because he was afraid that a 3 pound opossum was going to kill his dog.
It's barely bigger than a guinea pig I promise you it's not going to eat your fucking husky you brain dead idiot loser. Stop being such a mindless coward.

the "local artist" was a mendicant caste of artisan in the late capitalist period in north america. their chief product was art centered on the theme of rotting as well as prints of semi-cartoonish north american wildlife, such as opossums and deer. often the two muses intertwined, as evidenced by the sheer amount of deer skull art found on stickers on street posts. anthropologists debate what their social and cultural value was

What’s so neat about opossums? I don’t know much about them…
They are the best creatures on the planet!!!
My favorite facts:
- They are perfect little angels.
- North Americans only marsupial.
- They rarely carry rabies due do their low body temperatures.
- They help humans by eating bugs like ticks.
- They use their tails to carry around things.

The Hanged Man. Art by Taylor Hultquist-Todd, from Terra Arcanae.
...and the hanged man is a North American favorite: the opossum. Fun fact: Only juveniles are light enough to hang by their tails.

The Amazon, thanks to the warmer climate, and the Central American forests will both be able to expand to the North and South. This greater biome allowed for more diverse ecoregions to appear, boosting the already high Amazon biodiversity of our time.
This expansion allowed the Amazon’s monkeys to reach drier areas, where such a closed canopy couldn’t exist, and where adaptations for a more terrestrial, or even fully terrestrial lifestyle, became necessary. Here two lineages that took to the ground became quite successful: the Hesperopapioninae, that eventually would become a staple of the savannah and grasslands, and the Calvopithecinae, descendants of the bald uakari, with much shorter tails than their ancestors and more robust in build, which are particularly convergent with apes, like the gorilla like sisimito (Melanopithecus sanguinans).
This more open habitat allowed another group to get to the ground, the tree porcupines. These ground porcupines are some of the biggest animals in the rainforest, getting as big as rhinos. They don’t have quills anymore, replaced by sharp and wide scales that they can erect like quills to harm their attackers, although their main weapons are their massive claws that they also use to reach foliage.
Their main predators are the Jaguarote or onça nebulosa (Notopardus panamericanus), who’s also one of the only two big felines in North America, along with its close relative, the puma like onça rubra (Rubrailurus continentalis). It’s a solitary semi-arboreal hunter whose range often expands into that of other Notopardus species.
Other notable tree-dwellers include descendants of most other extant new world monkey lineages, macaws and other American parrots, and neotenic hoatzins, that are even poorer fliers than their ancestors, almost gliding at this point, that use their claws to climb like chicks.
Tumblr media
The rivers surrounded by the forests also have their own rich ecosystems, exploited by an array of semiaquatic mammals. The kings of these waterways are the otters, especially the descendants of the Neotropical otter, who took the giant river otter, who, instead, survived only in the brackish waters of Guyana’s, Venezuela’s and northern Brazil’s deltas, where they now occupy a niche similar to crocodilians, hunting both big fish, dolphin calves, terrestrial animals passing through and occasionally Phutridae species that stumble there.
The biggest animals in the basin are caimans, crocodiles and river dolphins, descended from the Guyana dolphin, one of the only two surviving cetaceans.
Tumblr media
The most abundant semiaquatic mammal species in the Amazon river, though, is surely the Amazon opossum, descended from the water opossum, with a watertight pouch and joeys already capable of swimming to the surface shortly before developing fur.

What is a favorite fact that you like but feel like you never have a chance to share? More than one favorite is also totally acceptable.
The Virginia Opossum is not only the only marsupial in North America, but it also has the shortest pregnancy of all mammals which is 12-13 days (the water opossum of Central America is also 12-13 days). On the other hand elephants have the longest pregnancy at 22 months. When Virginia Opossums are born, they are about the size of an American dime or a honeybee and weigh 0.13 grams (about the weight of 2-3 grains of rice). Virginia Opossums have between 8 and 25 babies per litter, but have to crawl up their moms belly (with only front legs and while completely blind) and attach to one of 13 teats. Once they attach, their jaws lock down till they are about two months old. If a baby is dropped by mom for any reason, she will not come back for them. Wildlife rehabbers can feed baby opossums with a small tube that goes into their stomach due to the fact that opossums can’t swallow at a young age and their mothers teat grows with them and stays in their stomach till they deattach. I have worked as a wildlife rehabber since 2008 and my specialty has always been opossums. I have raised them as small as 6 grams in weight which seems impossible to a lot of rehabbers out there. I will attach some photos. (Oh an Virginia Opossums have a pronged p3n1$ and females have two uteru$’ to support this.)

sorry for stopping posting for a while, was caught up in work and moving :P
i wanna elaborate more on my wicked win au/ykw 1.9(yes i named it that before LOL).. in the near/far future(if we're talking current springdale and past) there was a quite Bad decision for the wickeds to be like "hey, we need more heavylifting to take over the whole world, let's make our own wickeds". Unsweetie and Unfunny are the result of this ill-informed decision. Their parents are OBVIOUSLY Unfairy and K'mon K'mon! Not even AUs can keep them apart. Dame Dedtime gave the "choose new generals!" duties to her kids and most of them either chose themselves or their S/O.
Unfunny is the older "brother"(by that i mean she's so closeted she's practically sniffing the mothballs) and Unsweetie is the younger sister. Their representative animals are the vampire bat and the north american opossum respectively.
Unfunny's duty is to make other yokai laugh as a way of recruiting. Her jokes are awkward at best and insulting at worst(she can't read a room for the life of her). She has a love of mid-2000s music and games. Her demeanor is quite strange, and can't make friends very easily. Her only friends are her cousins.
Unsweetie was very misnamed by Unfairy. She's awful. A terror to her parents and the public. She never lets anyone see her cry, because it's a sign of weakness(plus her glasses will fog up and her mascara will melt off). She can't see for shit, but won't admit that(her glasses don't help at all). She's practically Unfairy Jr, but this time she can fly.

Tag game! I haven't actually participated in a while, so thanks to @heymacy and @loftec for the tag!
Name: Arrow
Age: 32
Location: US Midwest
What's one of your go-to karaoke songs? Singing by yourself in the car or in the shower totally counts. Anything old Disney. I'm partial to Part of Your World and Colors of the Wind.
If you had the power to control one of the four elements, which one would it be and why? Earth. Because I like dirt.
Think of one of your defining personality traits - which animal embodies it? North American Opossum. I also scream when cornered and fall asleep/play dead at inopportune moments when anxious.
Are there any fan theories that have stuck with you? Think of the infamous "Scooby and the gang are all actually high"
Wheel of Time: Bela is ta'veren. And a stronger ta'veren than Rand.
(For the uninitiated, ta'veren are ✨main characters✨ of existence itself, and Bela is a horse. The best horse)
Name a movie you watched or a book you read as a kid that you were totally not supposed to watch/read at that age.
Oh my gosh. So so much. I was a voracious reader and did not like being told no...so I stole my mom's Nora Roberts books when I was in like, early to mid elementary school, hid them under my bed until I finished them then snuck them back onto the shelves of the spare room. It was easy because it was also a storage room, and I was the only one who could squeeze through to get close to the shelves lol.
I also started some fantasy series I was too young for but at least those had plots.
Name a food or drink that you totally hated as a kid and now you really like. Wine😂
How about one you still hate? Whipped cream. Or anything else whipped.🤢
What's your least favourite chore? Dishes. If I'm forced to do them by hand I have to wear gloves because ew.
Do you have one that you actually enjoy? Dusting is very satisfying but I rarely do it
And to close it off, share a lyric or two that really resonate with you. Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again
-Into the West by Annie Lennox, Produced by Howard Shore, from The Return of the King
I feel like I've been away too long to know who's around now that likes these, but if you see this you're tagged!
