Marc Hubbard is the owner of the club hush management company. Mr. Marc Hubbard Hawaii graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1991 with a BS degree in banking and finance. He opened his first Nightclub (Club Dimensions) in 1996 and founded club hush on September 14, 2012.

"The HL-20 space taxi, Langley's candidate personnel launch system, is one of several designs being considered by NASA as a complement to the Space Shuttle. Human factors studies, using Langley volunteers as subjects, have been ongoing since March 1991 to verify crew seating arrangements, habitability, ingress and egress, equipment layout and maintenance and handling operations, and to determine visibility requirements during docking and landing operations. Langley volunteers, wearing flight suits and helmets, were put through a series of tests with the craft placed both vertically and horizontally to simulate launch and landing attitudes, The HL-20 would be launched into a low orbit by an expendable rocket and then use its own propulsion system to boost itself to the space station. Following exchange of crews or delivery of small payload, the HL-20 would return to Earth like the space shuttle, making a runway landing near the launch site, The full-scale engineering research model of the HL-20 design was constructed by students and faculty at North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University with the Mars Mission Research Center under a grant from NASA Langley."

Summary: Sapnap grew up in Texas, a state where being gay just wasn't something you were allowed to talk about- so he didn't. He never came out to his family and even when he made new friends who loved him unconditionally, he still couldn't bring himself to come out. Staying in the closet never felt like a problem once he moved to Florida with Dream, well, until a video collaboration introduced him to a boy that made him question if he could keep hiding. Now, Sapnap has to return to Texas for the first time since his move to Florida for his step-sister's birthday. What's waiting for him when he arrives is going to make keeping his sexuality a secret from his family that much harder.

Summary: Dream finds himself in an introverts worst nightmare when Sapnap convinces him to host seven of their close friends for Sapnap's 21st birthday. The only thing holding Dream together was knowing he could finally meet his best friend, George, in person. However, the person who stepped off the plane felt like a complete stranger to Dream- an unrecognizable personality inhabiting the body of the person he thought he knew better than anyone in this world. Years of online friendship had built up this moment for him, only to come crashing down when George wasn't the man he thought he was.
Between Friends (rated T, 110k and counting, oneshot collection)
Summary: A collection of fluffy DNF oneshots. Each chapter is its own completed story (aside from ‘Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas’ and ‘Homesick-London-Cafe’). Most oneshots are canon adjacent, and so far two are AUs. Primarily takes place around the time of the meet-up.

Summary: When George is stressed, he has nightmares, and when George has nightmares, he sleepwalks. In a subconscious search for relief, George sleepwalks to the safest place he can find- Dream's room. Dream finds out more than he bargained for when trying to decode George's nonsensical sleep-talking, but he struggles to make conscious-George as comforted by his presence as unconscious-George.
‘Idiot’ means ‘I love you’ in Floridian (rated T, 20k, oneshot)
Summary: Model-George x bodyguard-Dream AU. George has been working as a model for a few years now. His father, a higher up in the English government, insists that George has a bodyguard with him at all times. As an act of defiance, George makes a point to sneak away from his bodyguards to prove to his father they're useless and he doesn't need one. Desperate to find a bodyguard that can actually keep track of his son, George's father hires a bodyguard from a different background- a masked man named Dream. For once, George isn't so eager to get this bodyguard fired.
The Colors We Don’t See (rated T, 7k, oneshot)
Summary: Soulmate AU. Soulmates are predetermined, but that never held Dream back from loving George. When George is finally able to move to Florida, the first thing Dream notices is the way his laugh bounces more clearly than ever before. The second thing he notices is the bright yellow aura surrounding him, like George had stolen the sun out of the sky and placed it in his heart instead. George is his soulmate, that much is clear, but trouble arises when George can't see Dream's aura in return.
Live, Laugh, (Blood)Lust (rated T, 6k, oneshot)
Summary: Vampire-George x wizard-Dream AU. George doesn’t believe bloodlust is real, so Dream offers to put a love spell on him to prove him wrong… but he’s not the best wizardry student.
The Remedy to Everything (rated E, 170k and counting, 40/50 chapters)
Summary: After nearly a year of waiting for his visa, George is finally allowed to go home. Home, meaning a house in Florida that was already inhabited by his two best friends, Dream and Sapnap. Being an omega, George feared what trouble moving in with two alphas could potentially create. He never expected that trouble would come in the form of soft curls and green eyes, sparking something irreversible inside himself.

My ToastedGhost Headcanon Masterlist
Upon further inspection, technically Spooker ‘won’ the poll where I promised a masterpost by losing, but I have a lot more thoughts on Spooker and would prefer to write that when I’m not still dealing with finals, so... Here's the one I said I'd do :D
Absolutely the most popular ship in the fandom with minimal competition if any, ToastedGhost is a childhood friends-to-lovers kind of relationship between two people who trust each other above all else in the world. There are lots of ways to read the relationship, from unrequited to codependent to healthily married to… possibly even divorced!… Though I’ve never seen anyone take it that way. Even beyond the relationship, Toast has been widowed and Ghost canonically has no interest in women, so there’s no worry about breaking up another ship for this one to thrive.
Because the ship is as fluid as most other unconfirmed things in this fandom, I’m going to share my thoughts on how Multiple verses of the ship could work, from fluff to angst.
Solid History HC
Since a relationship between two people can be incredibly fluid based on the story told and the logic of the story, I wanted to open with ideas about how these two connect that I don't change unless I'm specifically making an AU where that aspect is changed. Consider these the base stats.
Johnny Ghost and Johnny Toast first met as children attending the same school in North Carolina, USA. Ghost has no recollection of it, but he's already dealt with Cardboard Friend by this point. Toast, on the other hand, has just experienced whatever traumatic event goes here, most of the time also being the same thing that gave Gavin his powers.
They meet through a shared love of learning about the supernatural, with Ghost being so excited he never shuts up about it and Toast actually listening and knowing how to respond.
The duo had two shared friends: Katrina and Ronnie Boast. Aside from that, Ghost was close with Dark Pit (cause they're cousins) and the whole group adopted a stray dog they couldn't agree on a name for.
Ghost is possessed by Casket for the first time while the pair know each other, but Casket doesn't become overtly active until Toast leaves. Because Ghost was first possessed on Halloween (in my hc), Toast was busy with other things at the time. The friend group had a whole conversation about it earlier in the day, and knew Ghost would be alone that night.
When Toast had to go back to the UK for high school, they kept contact over the phone before they figured out how to use a long-distance radio, meaning Ghost hogged his house's landline a lot in his freshman year. Toast first heard Casket over the phone when Ghost forgot to hang up once.
The first time the two saw each other in person again after Toast went back to the UK was to meet for Katrina's funeral. Ghost can't remember it at all, but they had some really soft moments together. There's also a chance Ghost admitted to possibly killing her while the memory was still vaguely fresh in his head.
Toast first met Mary while in University, and didn't actually fall in love with her immediately. Ghost encouraged Toast to talk to her about it, but didn't expect them to get married... or for Toast to accidentally kill her.
Toast moved back to the states after Mary died, if not already split from his family then splitting now. The two worked for awhile to try to fund PIE, which was struggling, while living in the same apartment. After struggling to hold a job outside of PIE freelance and writing his book, Toast reached back out to his family in order to fund PIE. He never told Ghost why he reached back out to them.
Even if not IN love, they adore each other and nothing can ever change that.
Relationship Possibilities
As much as I love Toastedghost, both as a ship and a friendship, this does keep the door open for variety in specifically how their relationship is defined. They can be somewhat toxic/codependent depending on what aspects about their relationship is explored.
Good Friends, Practically Brothers
Even though I’ve had some moments saying you can’t explain their relationship without romance, it is possible to have a friendship like theirs without underlying feelings on either side, and that’s beautiful. Ghost and Toast are incredibly close and that doesn’t require them to kiss when no one’s looking, and I say that with love. They are incredibly tight, and both have actively killed and died for each other, and even though Toast exasperates Ghost sometimes, and Toast has to be the responsible one when Ghost gets violent, they’ve found a way to make it work without falling into a relationship.
Because of their relationship as children, they may see each other as siblings, meaning any love between them is not only completely platonic, but it’s uncomfortable to think about it in any other way in this specific scenario. If someone sees them as brotherly love, they are just as valid as someone who sees them as in romantic love.
One-Sided/Mutual Pining
I don’t thin I’ve ever seen anyone read their relationship like this before, at least not in the long-term— I think Ghost is anticipated to have done some pining as a child— but this is a viable option for their relationship as well. Especially since Toast is coming into the work at PIE out of a marriage, one that left him widowed. If Ghost had feelings for him, the awkwardness of having feelings so soon after Mary died might be enough to make him shove his feelings back down. If Toast had feelings for Ghost, whether he already had them or developed them while living with him, it might feel too soon to try again, and eventually just never come up.
If you intend on using this one I would like to beg for some resolution someday, just because too many shows draw out the ‘one side is pining for the other’ thing for the entire duration of the series and it can exhausting when people look for any excuse to keep the couple seperate.
Dating Without Saying “Dating”
These two are so close that everyone is under the assumption that they’re dating, but they’ve never actually taken the time to define it. Largely because they never thought to. I do think it’d be funny if ghosts try threatening Ghost or Toast’s “husband” or “boyfriend” with other people around, and they’re the only one to not know who they’re talking about. I think part of the story here is them realizing that these feelings they’ve always had are teetering on romance.
I can see Ghost visiting his dad for a holiday with Toast and getting the “so, when are you two planning on tying the knot?” Question.
Dated as Kids, Never Actually Separated but Haven’t Talked About It
This is a whole AU concept idea that I literally just came up with, but I think it almost sounds cute and would love to see someone work with it. Especially since Ghost doesn’t remember his childhood very well, but Toast does. There’s a chance Toast thinks Ghost forgot but he didn’t, or Ghost did forget and Toast is trying to find a way to bring it up to him… idk, it’s cute.
They Started by Fake-Dating, but it Became Real
They get married for tax purposes and make it a joke for about a year, until it stops being a joke and starts being actual chemistry. It could have also been to get Toast’s family to leave him alone about marrying.
They Got Married!
Somewhere, sometime, off-screen, there was a Toastedghost wedding, and it was probably just as chaotic as it sounds. This could happen any time— before the events of the series, after the Puppet arc, after the Retirement arc, sometime after the channel ended, whatever works! Imagine Toast got them rings made of silver, iron, and salt to keep ghosts and other spirits away from them, and having to wear it around his neck during the Werewolf arc, or wearing both his and Ghost’s during the Puppet arc and identifying him by it in the Billion Year War. There is so much story you can tell with rings.
They Eloped as Soon as Mary Died
WOAH THAT FEELS A LITTLE MUCH— like I’ve seen headcanons that Mary and Toast were not actually that close, that Toast was engaged to her by his family and barely knew her when she ended up dying. Even then, and even with Toast leaving his family, it feels incredibly… shallow? Rude? And I would argue that this relationship is one of the more unhealthy ones, because it shows a serious sense of disregard for other people’s life and lack of empathy. I don’t know how people headcanon Mary, and maybe the only people who want them to get together like this see her character as the world thing on the planet and not someone Toast would miss that much, but I don’t say that this feels heartless as a criticism. I say it because I think it’s something fresh to explore that none of these other prompts have right out the gate.
Think about it, a Toastedghost story where they take ‘us against the world’ to the extreme, actually hurting people around them in the name of each other. Even if this isn’t toxic between the duo, it is genuinely harmful for other people in their lives, and would be something interesting to explore. This could include Toast letting Casket kill other members of PIE to keep Ghost safe, or Ghost choosing to do things he would otherwise consider bad because he needs to break Toast out of prison again.
It Doesn’t Matter How They Label, They Are Codependent
This is its own label, I’m not saying all Toastedghost is toxic and unhealthy.
Though it is cute that Ghost went from dimension to dimension looking for Toast, and Toast basically put his life on pause to get Ghost back, this was basically foreshadowing for what would happen if they were separated by choice. The moment that Ghost turned his back on Toast, Toast crumpled like a house of cards and I promise you that if it were the other way around, Ghost would have fallen to pieces too. It’s cute that they rely on each other, but emotionally they can’t get through the day alone and that means that if they have problems communicating ever, someone is going to get hurt.
Rapid Fire HCs
Ghost is likely projecting when he says everyone is in love with Johnny Toast because HE is in love with Toast and can't imagine a person who doesn't immediately adore him.
There was a period of time where Ghost planned to move to Europe to support Toast after Mary passed, but Toast beat him to the punch and seemingly immigrated to the states.
Both Ghost and Toast can cook, but while living together in their first apartment, Ghost had primary dominion of the kitchen because Toast wasn’t used to cleaning up after himself and Ghost found it annoying that he kept leaving dishes lying around.
Toast does the taxes for the household, not just because Ghost can’t read, but because he doesn’t want Ghost to know how much he’s bringing in or spending in a year. Between support from his family, the macaroni dealing, and PIE, Toast can probably afford to replace multiple cars a year.
Both Ghost and Toast prefer Ghost’s family to Toast and tend to stay in the states for holidays and avoid Toast family events. However, Toast did go to his sister’s wedding.
Because they’ve been close since they were young, Toast knows Ghost’s dad well, better then Ghost knows Gavin.
Songs and Why
- Curses by the Crane Wives
“🎶 Ashes ashes, dust to dust | The Devil’s after both of us 🎶”
From what I’ve seen, what this song is about is up for debate, but the explanations I’ve seen ranges from a murderer is in love, to it being about a person who is overwhelmed by their emotions. Honestly, I think without the context of what it “must” be about, it works well to just consider it for them. They are two people who are likely in love in a world that does not love them much back, both have seen their fair shares of trouble and now rely on the other, using them as a lighthouse. This song could be from either or both of their perspectives, especially considering Ghost has experiences with evil houses and murder, and Toast seems to be very reliant on Ghost emotionally.
A lot of Crane Wife songs are more about relationships with problems, which is funny when I saw Curses for Toastedghost is characterizes one of the healthiest versions of their relationship.

“🎶 Family and friends becoming ghosts to dream of… 🎶”
One of my favorite songs in middle school, it is really easy to see this one as a kind of codependent relationship, and this works for them best in very possessive scenarios. It’s also a good song to point out how much they’ve lost, even if they still have each other. In all honesty, I used to see this as Only a CBF and Ghost song, but now I save CBF only for the very beginning. I think it’s important to show how Toast is affected by their relationship too, and how neither Johnny alone is the problem when any problem exists.

Died With a Hammer in His Hand: Unpacking the Myth of John Henry
“John Henry said to his captain:
‘You are nothing but a common man,
Before that steam drill shall beat me down,
I’ll die with my hammer in my hand.’”

John Henry is one of America’s most well-known mythic heroes, immortalized in song, statue, postage stamp, and multiple movies (including a 2000 Disney animated short film which I vividly remember watching in elementary school). But if you’re unfamiliar with the legend, here’s a brief summary.
John Henry was a freed slave who found himself working for a railroad company in the years following the Civil War as a steel driver. His job was to drive a steel spike into rock so that dynamite could be placed in the resulting hole, thus opening up a tunnel through the Appalachians.
John Henry was the best on his crew, and he took pride in his work—so when a white salesman brought in a steam-powered drill, claiming that it could drill better than any man, he decided to challenge that claim. Henry entered into a contest with the machine to see who could carve out the deepest hole in the mountain in a single day.
His victory cost him his life.
Henry’s wife—sometimes named Polly Ann, sometimes named Lucy, sometimes not named at all—went to visit him on his deathbed that evening. In many versions of the ballad, Henry’s last words are a request for a glass of water. In other versions, he asks his wife to be true to him when he’s dead, or to do her best to raise their son. Many accounts say that he’s buried by a railroad, where “Every locomotive come roarin’ by, / Says there lays that steel drivin’ man” (lyrics from Onah L. Spencer).

The general consensus among historians now seems to be that the ballad of John Henry is one such legend that has its roots in historical fact, although the particulars are long obscured by the centuries that have since passed. Henry was born into slavery in the 1840s or 50s, either in North Carolina or Virginia (some accounts of the ballad lend credence to the latter claim). As for how John Henry found himself working for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway company, University of Georgia history professor Scott Reynolds Nelson posits in his book Steel Drivin’ Man that the man was sentenced to ten years in a Virginia prison for theft at only nineteen years of age, and that he was among many prisoners leased out by the state for labor.
Did you know that the 13th Amendment makes an exception for slavery which is used “as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted”? (This practice continues to this day, and has become an industry worth tens of billions of dollars. Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola or simply “The Farm,” is a good place to begin if you’re wanting to look into chain gangs further.) John Henry the legend was a free worker who took on the backbreaking, often dangerous work of railroad labor under his own power and could demand any wage for his work, but John Henry the man may have lived and died in neoslavery.
Speaking of Henry’s death, most retellings of the myth say that he died of sheer exhaustion. Some add in the detail that it was his heart that gave out because he worked himself too hard. However, alternate theories have been proposed for how the man died. Some historians say it was a stroke that killed him, while others posit silicosis.
It’s this latter hypothesis which I find most intriguing. For those who aren’t familiar with it, the American Lung Association describes silicosis as “a lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica, a common mineral found in sand, quartz and many other types of rock.” It’s been an occupational hazard for construction workers since, well, the time of John Henry. What I find interesting are the implications for the narrative if the real Henry died of silicosis. In the folk ballad, Henry causes his own death by working himself too hard. On the other hand, the ones at fault if the man died of silicosis would be his employers—the ones responsible for the dangerous conditions he worked in.
So why would John Henry’s cause of death change during the transition from fact to legend?
The answer, as with many other fictionalized accounts of historical events, is that it simply makes for a more effective story. But not just that—a more effective message. So what might the ballad be trying to tell those who listen to it?
First, let’s think about who this song was sung by and for. The ballad of John Henry is a work song, its rhythm meant to help railroad workers stay and strike in sync, in the same way a drumbeat helps soldiers march in step. It’s been sung by railroad workers, miners, construction workers, chain gangs, and country musicians. At its core, then, the ballad is a song of and for the American working class—specifically those people doing the same sort of backbreaking physical labor as John Henry himself. Many of these laborers would have been Black, and likely former slaves—especially when it came to Southern chain gangs. (See my above note about how American slavery was only mostly abolished, and then think about why the U.S. has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. . . but I digress.)

We’ve established that John Henry is a hero for working-class Americans during the time of the Second Industrial Revolution. But what sort of hero is he? Is he like Achilles, a paragon of his country’s values and an example for the audience to aspire to? Or is he an Icarus, a cautionary tale sung so the audience won’t repeat his mistakes?
The answer depends on who’s telling the story.
Onah L. Spencer is the source for one version which emerged from a Black community in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he recounted the lyrics to Guy B. Johnson for the latter’s 1929 book John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend, he also stated that the song was used to motivate workers: “. . . if there was a slacker in a gang of workers it would stimulate him with its heroic masculine appeal.”
In cases such as Spencer’s crew, then, John Henry’s death is presented as glorious, and Henry is seen as admirable for working so hard that it kills him. Here, he’s a good example. Taken to the extreme, the Achillean Henry encourages fellow workers to follow in his footsteps—to keep pushing themselves harder and harder until they finally keel over.
This message doesn’t benefit the workers passing it along; it benefits the employers profiting from their labor. This, I think, is where the story blurs the line between myth and propaganda. And while the ballad of John Henry certainly isn’t singlehandedly responsible for the American tendency to overwork ourselves, it does reflect our attitudes about work in a way that’s worth unpacking. To me, this reeks of the Puritan work ethic. The belief was that you had to be working as often as you could; if you didn’t, the devil would be able to influence you. The Puritans were one of America’s foundational cultural influences—of course those values would have influenced the ballad of John Henry.
Henry is a hero because he worked himself to death. If we see him as a good example, what does this say about the effects that capitalism has had on American attitudes? About the internalized belief that our worth as humans only comes from what we can contribute to the economy? Why do we see death from exhaustion as a fitting end for a former slave?
Then again, maybe we’re not supposed to.

Remember how I noted earlier that many of the laborers who first sang Henry’s ballad would themselves have been former slaves? It’s important because there’s a long history of American slaves using work songs as a tool of resistance against their oppressors, and these Black laborers—these “freed” slaves—would have carried that tradition with them into the Second Industrial Revolution.
The ballad of John Henry, then, might have been sung with the intent of helping other workers survive the brutal conditions on the railroads. Here, Henry becomes an Icarus—a warning of what happens if you push yourself too hard. One version of the ballad recorded by Edward Douglas of the Ohio State Penitentiary contains lyrics which suggest that not every Henry was meant to be emulated.
“John Henry started on the right-hand side,
And the steam drill started on the left.
He said, ‘Before I’d let that steam drill beat me down,
I’d hammer my fool self to death,
Oh, I’d hammer my fool self to death.’”
Don’t do what John Henry did, this version warns the audience. Be wiser than he was. Don’t push yourself quite so hard. Think of the people you’d be leaving behind if you’re not careful.
Perhaps even the creation of this mythos was an act of defiance in and of itself. At this point, I think it bears mentioning that I myself am not Black and can only hypothesize based on what I’ve heard from people who are, but I see something radical in the act of raising up one of your own as your hero rather than venerating the people you’ve been told are superior to you.
Remember, John Henry’s contest was versus a white man’s machine. It costs him everything, but he triumphs over the expectations of that steam drill salesman and proves his worth as a laborer and a person. John Cephas, a blues musician from Virginia who was interviewed by NPR for a report on John Henry back in 2002, had this to say of the myth:
“It was a story that was close to being true. It’s like the underdog overcoming this powerful force. I mean even into today when you hear it (it) makes you take pride. I know especially for black people, and for people from other ethnic groups, that a lot of people are for the underdog.”
Americans love underdog stories. Our own national origin myth is one! John Henry’s assertation of power and skill, the ballad’s declaration that Black people have the right to be proud of themselves too. . . no wonder this myth has resonated with so many people. No wonder it’s survived for a century and a half.
In this light, then, John Henry once again becomes a hero for us, the audience, to emulate. In the fight against oppression, endurance like Henry’s becomes key. Justice is almost never won quickly. The odds stacked against us may seem impossible, but it’s worth trying anyways, even if we have to fight to our dying breaths.

John Henry has meant and been many things to a lot of people in the past two centuries. A representative of capitalist exploitation, a cautionary tale for workers, an inspiration to oppressed people in America, even a communist icon—but I’d like to take a moment to talk about what his story means to me. It’s not something I’ve seen discussed in my research, and I think it’s worth exploring.
John Henry reflects fears of workers during the Second Industrial Revolution who saw how technology was evolving—how machines were being created that could do their jobs not just faster, but cheaper, because you don’t have to pay a machine like you would a person. They feared that they would be replaced, and that they would be left destitute while their former bosses grew richer and richer. And despite the centuries between us, this is a fear that I can understand.
Often, I feel it myself.
As an artist existing in online spaces during this new influx of AI-generated “art” and writing, I have witnessed many fears that we will be replaced by AI. Yes, there is a certain human quality to art that a generative learning model cannot replicate, but who’s to say that the much-vaunted free market will care? We can hope that art as a profession will survive, but we just don’t know.
In John Henry’s struggle, I see my own. In the steam drill salesman, I see tech bros on the platform formerly known as Twitter showing off their latest batch of beautiful, hollow, AI-generated “art.” I see John Henry’s passion, his pride, his triumph.
And I see hope.
By his life and death, the mythic John Henry reassures me that human beings aren’t so easy to replace after all. He tells me that machines can be defeated. That one day, my vindication as an artist and writer will come, and the world will see our worth.
The ballad of John Henry has endured like a mountain for a hundred and fifty years, and I hope it will survive for hundreds more—that John Henry’s hammer will continue to ring true throughout the ages. But in the midst of American mythos, it’s important not to lose sight of the historical facts behind it. Legends are interesting and inspirational and wonderful, but the real stories have something to tell us, too.

Walter L.Watson, Jr was an SR -71 RSO. He was the first and only African-American to fly the SR-71. I didn’t know him because he was stationed at Beale Air Force Base after my family left. BUT, I have watched videos of him. Check out YouTube. m.youtube.com/watch?embeds_r…
Watson was born in Columbia, South Carolina, he was the oldest of four children of Walter L. Watson, Sr. and Mildred Platt Watson. After graduating C.A. Johnson High School, he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C where he earned a Mechanical Engineering degree and commission as an Air Force Officer through the ROTC program. Watson later obtained a master’s degree from Chapman College of Orange, CA in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management.
He entered the Air Force as an avionics maintenance officer, but in 1973, he was selected for aviation training, beginning a diverse and distinguished flying career in the Air Force. His first assignment was flying the C-130E in Southeast Asia. He later became a flight instructor, flight examiner, and flight commander in tactical fighter and strategic reconnaissance squadrons that flew F-4C/D/E, F-111D, and SR-71 aircraft. Watson was the first African American and only one to qualify as a crew member of the SR-71.
After completing his flying career, Waston continued to serve in the Airforce in production and training. As Commander and Professor of Aerospace Studies at North Carolina A&T State University, his leadership helped his unit to achieve the following production milestones: 1) 20% of all African-American Second Lieutenant Pilots, 2) 50% of all African-American Second Lieutenant Navigators, and 3) 25% of African-American female commissioners in 1993. These accomplishments led to assignments to a number of leadership positions at HQ Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC at Maxwell AFB, AL). As the Chief of the AFROTC Scholarship branch, he supervised all scholarships for over 5,000 students across the nation with an annual budget exceeding $22 million.
Colonel Watson also served as a key decision-maker for Air Force Relations with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). He received numerous awards and medals over his career time. He was awarded the Brig Gen Noel F Parrish Award which is Tuskegee Airmen Inc.’s highest national award for service and impact.

This isn't going to make major news like it should, but there was a party at a gas station* with about 1000 college students from a local hbcu where police officer threatened to mace the crowd. This caused the students to run into traffic to get away. There was a (possibly deliberate) hit and run resulting in 6 students being taken to the hospital. This was an act of police violence.
*The party by a gas station because the other two locations got shut down and local clubs have a serious gun violence problem

In the aftermath of the events of one working part, Dean and Cas take a road trip. Neither of them really wants it to end. And they realize it doesn't really have to.
It's been 15 years, and about time they got to celebrate! This is technically coda fic for one working part, but you don't need to read that to enjoy this little snippet of fluff.

The morning after Cas came back, Dean just drove. The reality of their new lives had really begun to sink in. As they headed toward the bunker, after stopping for lunch at a Kansas City style barbecue place, Dean decided to use their self-appointed time off to introduce Cas to the wide variety of barbecue the vast and varied United States had to offer.
“It won’t take long to detour to Memphis,” Dean had said while they were still at the table. “Beale Street, home of the blues and pork ribs. You’ll love it.”
“But we just ate barbecue, Dean,” Cas replied. “Is it really necessary to drive across three states for more? Isn’t this sufficient?”
Dean looked at Cas in horror for a second, and then shook his head slowly. “See, this is why we need a barbecue road trip. Gotta train up those new human taste buds. I can’t have you spending the rest of your life thinking all barbecue is the same.”
Cas had reluctantly accepted that. Mostly he was just glad to be with Dean, no matter what they were doing. And the idea of a long road trip just for fun, not running into danger or looking for things to hunt or fighting against cosmic forces sounded pleasant, regardless of what they were doing. He also admitted that first barbecue dinner had been delicious, and he wouldn’t mind having it again. He looked across the table at Dean, and smiled.
“Thank you, Dean. Of course I’m happy to go wherever you’d like to take me.”
Dean had gone all pink and flustered across the table at that, and that was also something Cas didn’t mind in the least. In a matter of days he’d gone from firmly believing that he could never have what he truly wanted to being given more than he’d ever even dared to hope for. Not just Dean, but an end to the constant struggle to stay ahead of the forces intent on destroying the universe. For the first time in his long existence, he had time. Time to explore and enjoy the creation he’d stood above for eons, to partake of its wonders instead of invisibly standing guard over them. And Dean was eager and overjoyed to share it all with him.
After Memphis, Dean insisted they needed to head to North Carolina. They swung down through Louisiana and into Texas toward the end of the week. Over brisket while a local band played outside a brewery in the hill country outside Austin, Dean sat staring off into the distance at another group of people smiling and laughing together.
“Is something wrong, Dean?” Cas asked after a few minutes. “You’re not finishing your lunch.”
Dean shook himself off and gave Cas a warm smile. “I was just thinking we should probably be heading home soon.”
Cas nodded at this. “Yes. This has been fun and enlightening, but Sam might be starting to worry about us.”
Dean laughed. “Maybe. But I’m also thinking some of your returned souls might start showing up. Don’t wanna leave the homestead all locked up if anyone needs a refuge, you know?”
“Possibly,” Cas replied.
They’d already heard from Rowena and Crowley, who’d both eagerly taken the deal Cas's spell had offered them. Dean had been worried the two of them would just end up killing each other again, but apparently they’d instead decided to go into business together. So far he’d been reluctant to discover exactly what sort of business the two of them would concoct together, but at least he wasn’t worried about having to clean up another messy murder scene at Rowena’s place. He didn’t necessarily expect to hear from anyone else, but everyone who might reach out already knew where they lived. As long as Sam was there, at least they’d find a warm welcome. Something else was bothering Dean.
“Are you already bored of traveling with me?” he joked, hoping to lighten Dean’s mood.
“What? Never!” Dean insisted, reaching across the table to rest a hand on Cas’s. He stared down at their impulsively joined hands and slowly looked up to Cas’s warm smile with one of his own. “It’s just… it’s almost our anniversary, you know? The day we met, the day you pulled me outta Hell. Kinda feels like we should do something special.”
Cas frowned at that. “Anniversary? I never really thought about it like that before.”
“Yeah, well there’s always been a lot of other shit going on. Even after I started liking you enough to stop thinking of it as the day I had to dig myself out of my own grave and started thinking of it as the day we met, there was never really much time to stop and grab a Hallmark card about it. I just figured, we got time for celebrating stuff like that now.”
“That sounds lovely, Dean,” Cas replied, grateful to know that nothing was truly bothering Dean. He wasn’t actually upset about anything, but he still looked as confused as Cas felt. “What do people even do to celebrate that sort of thing?”
“What,” Dean replied absently. “Rescuing some dude from Hell? I don’t think a lot of other people got that sort of anniversary to celebrate.”
Cas grinned. “That’s true, but people celebrate many similar annual events.”
Dean finished off his brisket and then stood up with Cas to walk back to the car. They weren’t in a hurry, but they were ready to move on again. As they headed out on the road, Dean gave Cas a considering look.
“We could take another road trip. There’s a lot of other important human knowledge we gotta explore.”
Cas considered that for a moment, and then remembered where he’d first met Dean face to face. It seemed as logical a destination as any for an anniversary road trip.
“We could go to Pontiac, Illinois. The barn where you met me is still standing. Or was, a few months ago when I last checked on it.”
Dean turned to look at him so fast the car jolted to the side before he managed to correct it. “Dude, you checked on it?”
Cas gave a little shrug, wondering if maybe he’d overstepped some sort of boundary he hadn’t known existed. Maybe he needed to justify his actions to Dean.
“I used to visit there frequently. When I could still fly, it was a safe sanctuary. You warded it very well against almost everything other than angels. And after I fell and became human, I added more warding. It’s hidden from almost everyone and everything else, except for us. I made sure that you’d always be able to find it again, too. If you ever felt the need for a sanctuary.”
“What?” Dean asked, genuinely surprised by all of this. “You turned the place I stabbed you in the heart into a safe space?”
Cas shrugged. “It seemed metaphorically appropriate at the time.”
Dean reached across the seat and took his hand, squeezing it tight. He was clearly overcome with emotions that Cas was just beginning to understand. He squeezed back and smiled as Dean took a few deep breaths, intently focused on the road. Eventually, Dean cleared his throat, and then smiled at him.
“You know, we did the barbecue tour. We should probably do a pizza tour. Chicago’s not far from Pontiac, and you gotta try a deep dish.”
Cas smiled back, relieved, and let Dean deflect his feelings for the time being. They’d have plenty of time to talk through all their emotions. He could let Dean plan it all for the future for now.
“That sounds wonderful, Dean,” he replied. Because they had time for everything now.

Past Shapes Present (Week 6)
Welcome to another week of nature interpretation my friends! I hope you’ve taken time to enjoy nature recently! This week I thought we’d dissect a thought provoking quote by Edward Hyams:
“There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity, and integrity entails the keeping together of the parts of any whole, and if these parts are scattered throughout time, then the maintenance of integrity entails a knowledge, a memory, of ancient things. …. To think, feel or act as though the past is done with, is equivalent to believing that a railway station through which our train has just passed, only existed for as long as our train was in it.” (Edward Hyams, Chapter 7, The Gifts of Interpretation)
While this quote is rather complex (I know I had to read it a few times), I’m going to break it down and provide some examples.
First of all, I totally agree with the sentiment of the statement, which I interpret to mean that our current conditions are predicated on all the past that came before it, and that to truly describe something as it is now, you need to know about its past.
This principle is relevant to me as an interpreter. To convey a fully meaningful story to visitors I will necessarily reference the past. For example, if I was leading a fall hike through a forest, any complete story about the beautiful fall colors would refer to dynamic seasonal changes: the trees are not red, orange, and yellow year-round. Our present moment is shaped by everything that came before, and this is absolutely true of our ever dynamic natural world.
It is also consistent with some of the primary goals of interpretation as stated by the self-taught nature interpretation Enos Mills. The goal that comes to mind is “to give biographies rather than classifications” (Beck et al, Chapter 5, Guiding Principles). By delving into the unique stories in nature, we maintain the integrity of the natural world, by recognizing that its past intricacies contribute to its present.
It also reminds me of British Columbia, standing in front of a Douglas Fir tree. Part of their beauty and intrigue is not only their massive size, but also in their ancient age. They remind us of the past, and make us ponder which world events took place while the tree was alive. This tree - this singular thing - is part of the world as we know it now with our modern technology and conveniences, but was also part of the world when it was radically different. All of these things, the past and the present are wrapped up and represented in this one ancient tree. I am certain a good interpreter could craft an excellent story tying these trees to ancient history. They could connect Canadian history with the present, breathing life and meaning into past events through these ancient trees (Beck et al, Chapter 15, Interpreting History).
What a great quote to look at! That’s all for this week folks. I’ve been slowly developing my writing, and I hope it shows (Beck et al, Chapter 14, Interpretation and the Written World).
I hope writing is capable of showing my passion for these topics. As the famous interpreter Freeman Tilden said, “Whatever is written without enthusiasm, will be read without interest.” (Tilden, Interpreting Our Heritage)
