Yves Klein
Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year, however the colour Blue for Yves Klein, or more specifically IKB, was a colour that had a quality close to pure space and, he associated it with immaterial values beyond what can be seen or touched.
Klein famously declared the blue sky to be his first artwork and from there continued finding radical new ways to represent the infinite and immaterial in his work. In 1947, he began making monochrome paintings, which he associated with freedom from ideas of representation or personal expression. A decade later, he developed his trademark, patented colour, International Klein Blue (IKB). He described it as ‘a Blue in itself, disengaged from all functional justification’. Klein made around 200 monochrome paintings using IKB. He used materials like water, fire, and air to construct his works.
The production of monochrome paintings was probably conceived by Klein as both a spiritual and a marketable activity. At his 1957 exhibition in Milan, he displayed a series of eleven ostensibly identical blue monochromes, each with a different price which he claimed reflected its unique spirit. As he explained: 'Each blue world of each painting, although the same blue and treated in the same way, presented a completely different essence and atmosphere. None resembled any other - no more than pictoral moments resemble each other - although all were of the same superior and subtle nature (marked by the immaterial).’
Yves Klein was a French artist and a leading member of the French artistic movement of Nouveau Réalisme. Klein was a pioneer in the development of performance art and a forerunner of minimal art and Pop Art.

BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: CÉSAR (1976) - The stunning 1976 cloth-hardcover César monograph - English edition. With text by the Pierre Restany and large beautifully printed illustrations of over 200 of César's sculptural works in colour and black and white, including a wealth of his incredible Compressions and Expansions, along with a list of all works, biography, bibliography. Designed by Peter Knapp and Walter Rospert and printed in France. This is the 1976 English edition with dustjacket, and original cardboard slipcase, and still the nicest book on this great artist. César Baldaccini (1 January 1921 in Marseille - 6 December 1998 in Paris), usually called César, was a noted French sculptor. César was at the forefront of the Nouveau Réalisme movement with his radical compressions (compacted automobiles, discarded metal, or rubbish), expansions (polyurethane foam sculptures), and fantastic representations of animals and insects in bronze. Schulz met Christo in 1975 when the environmental artist, along with wife Jeanne-Claude, were in Sonoma County working on the preparation for their installation art piece, “Running Fence,” a 23-mile, 18-foot high, white nylon curtain that zig-zagged over the Sonoma County hills before plunging into the ocean at the Marin-Sonoma county line. Schulz attended town hall meetings to support the “Running Fence” concept during the planning stages and this began a friendship based on mutual respect and admiration that lasted a quarter of a century.⠀ ⠀ On November 20, 1978, Schulz memorialized Christo’s work in this Peanuts comic strip. Twenty-five years later, in October 2003, Christo and Jeanne-Claude gifted “Wrapped Snoopy House” to Jean Schulz, sharing that it was Christo’s conception of Snoopy’s imaginary doghouse.
