“This looks terrible,” Ellie said.
“Total shit,” Joel agreed. He poked at the lump in front of him like it was roadkill. Just as repulsive, just as archaic.
“Hey!” you exclaimed, blowing out a breath to try and get the bangs sticking to your forehead to move. That had been another brilliant idea, getting bangs. In the post-apocalypse. You caught Joel watching you, the dimple in his cheek disappearing as soon as you frowned.
“I mean, you did with little kids, Before? For real?” Ellie asked.
“Yeah, making ornaments out of salt dough was definitely a real thing,” you said. “Sometimes, you painted them or put on glitter. Sometimes they were just plain.”
“Like, everyone did, or just teachers?” Ellie said.
“It was popular at schools and daycare, but lots of people made ornaments this way,” you said. Somewhere in Michigan, there was a box in an attic full of handprints of your sisters, your cousins, gingerbread men with flaking brown paint. You bit your lip, remembering, blinked to try and make tears impossible.
“We used to string cranberries, popcorn, me and Tommy and our grandma,” Joel said, saving you. He rested his hands on the kitchen table and you thought of how he’d learned to hold a needle, how careful he could be. “We had to make a double batch of the popcorn, we were pigs and always ate a whole bowl while we were supposed to be working.”
“Did you get in trouble?” Ellie said.
“Nah, our grandma liked it,” Joel said, glanced at you, checking in. He gestured toward the dough, the scraps scattered in front of them. “You think we can salvage this?”
“We could make stars,” you said. “They’re easy to hang.”
“And wish on,” Joel said.
Ellie rolled her eyes but she smiled too.

Made "salt clay dough" ornaments of my pets' paw prints!! Two dogs and one bearded dragon!
I may paint or decorate more later. This was super easy to make!
Recipe used: 2 cups all purpose flour, 1 cup salt, 2/3 cup water. Add more water if dry. Add more flour if sticky. Bake at 250° F for 30 min intervals until dry. (This was only about half of the dough that it makes).
