Wood Engraving Wednesday
Czech-American wood engraver, illustrator, and type designer, Rudolph Ruzicka, illustrated this edition of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Tales with seven color wood engravings and a wood-engraved cover pattern for the Overbrook Press in Stamford, Connecticut, in an edition of 250 copies. The entire edition was also designed by Ruzicka a year after being awarded the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts and joining the staff of the Mergenthaler Linotype Company as a type designer and consultant. He would go on to design several typeface families for Linotype.
Our copy is another donation from the estate of Dennis Bayuzick.

Misc. Info
The Text of the Telagram: "Got married. Leaving town. Will not be back. Don't worry. Babe."
Police labeled her a runaway but they still searched for her
Beverly had taken $175 dollars from her savings account
She had told coworkers that she was going to Chicago and while she has relatives in Chicago, those relatives reported that they never seen or heard from Beverly
Beverly had no boyfriends and none of her friends know of any men in her life nor of anyone she would eloped with
Authorities had checked marriage-license bureaus in all 50 states but didn’t found any evidence that Beverly had married
There were many reported sightings of Beverly in cities all over the United States after her disappearance but none of them were confirmed
Her parents published advertisements in newspapers in attempt to appeal for to contact them but she never reached out.
A theory is that she ran away because of an illegitimate pregnancy as it was a heavy stigma in the 1940s though nothing found support that theory

Allison Fluke-Ekren, a 42-year-old woman who grew up on a farm in Overbrook, Kansas, was sentenced to two decades in prison on Tuesday for leading the Khatiba Nusaybah, an all-female ISIS battalion in Raqqa, Syria.
Fluke-Ekren's own children asked the judge to hand down the maximum sentence, 20 years, during victim impact statements at the hearing.
Fluke-Ekren tearfully spoke to the judge before her sentencing. "I deeply regret my choices, but I also deeply sympathize with women abused and raped in Syria."
In a plea deal made with the government, Fluke-Ekren admitted she translated and analyzed documents taken from the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, after the terrorist attack on the facility in 2012.
She tried to explain to the court some of her actions during the seven years she spent in Syria. "I was afraid of my conduct in Benghazi. I just didn’t see a way out."
Fluke-Ekren also stressed that for most of her time in Syria, she had been just a mother, caring for her several children as well as other children and their mothers.
Federal Judge Leonie Brinkema said she did not find Fluke-Ekren’s claims "wholly credible," saying she had "downplayed the impact" of her role in the Benghazi attack. "I don’t believe you were a passive dupe. You knowingly and voluntarily were an accessory after the fact."
The judge continued, "There’s no question you were providing material support for a terrorist organization," and emphasized several times during the hearing that was the crime for which Fluke-Ekren would be sentenced.
Earlier in the sentencing hearing, two of Fluke-Ekren’s adult children gave emotional statements against their mother.
Layla Ekren was visibly trembling in court for nearly an hour before she got her chance to tell Brinkema that her mother abused her as a child. She told the court about one instance in Syria when the family had lice, and her mother held her down on the ground and poured the medicine on her eyes in an apparent attempt to blind her.
Layla Ekren also told the story of how when she was 13, her mother married her "to a random ISIS fighter as a sex slave… I have felt degraded my entire life."
Later, Brinkema pressed Fluke-Ekren on the marriage of her 13-year-old daughter in Syria.
"She was a few weeks from turning 14," said Fluke-Ekren.
"I don’t think that makes much of a difference," Brinkema replied.
CENTCOM CHIEF BELIEVES SYRIA IS 'BREEDING GROUND' FOR NEXT GENERATION OF ISIS
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh laid out the allegations against Fluke-Ekren in a sentencing memo, writing that she urged a woman to commit a suicide bombing and told others that her oldest son was born after she was raped by an American soldier as a way to gain favor with other terrorists.
"Allison Fluke-Ekren brainwashed young girls and trained them to kill. She carved a path of terror, plunging her own children into unfathomable depths of cruelty by physically, psychologically, emotionally, and sexually abusing them," Parekh wrote in the memo.
Fluke-Ekren contested that the Khatiba Nusaybah, which trained girls as young as 10 years old to use suicide belts and automatic weapons, was more of a community center for women in Raqqa.
She asked to be sentenced to just two years. "We just lived a very normal life," Fluke-Ekren told the judge about her family's time in Syria.
Gabriel Fluke, the defendant’s adult son, said his mother had "piece by piece taken away every friend and family" he ever had, and later tried to get him to leave the U.S. to return to Syria.

Spiritfarer part 25
Tumblr media
I almost forgot I was still playing this game. I had to look into my notes to see what I was doing when I left off. I ended up doing some of Buck’s quests for the missing treasure and some quests for Jackie at Overbrook hospital.
Tumblr media
I started out by doing some fishing to get the fish needed for Elena’s last errands.
Tumblr media
One of my missions was to find the Looter’s Literary Review treasure that had been lost by Crows End Inc. I already had the first map and had to find out where it was...I had no idea and have to admit I looked up where it was at.
Tumblr media
I was able to find the loot at coordinates -71, 180. It was a good one because I got 2 improvement recipes for my field and garden. Nice.
Tumblr media
I then spoke to Buck and he was impressed I found it. I now just had to wait for the next issue of Looter’s Literary Review to find the next one.
Tumblr media
I used my new upgrades to improve both of my fields and gardens. It’s supposed to hold water in the soil longer.
Tumblr media
I went back to Overbrook to see what Jackie needed and he said that the patient up at the top room didn’t want to take her nap and he was late on his rounds. There were a few patients that tended to wander, so he wanted me to go around and get them back into their rooms.
Tumblr media
I went around the hospital and found all three patients. I just had to talk to them to get them to go back to their rooms.
Tumblr media
I went back to Jackie and he said that the patients are all a good bunch if a little weird, except the one up in the tower who was uncooperative. He didn’t even know why he did this job, they are all so ungrateful. Then he gave me an orbal as thanks.
Tumblr media
I left back to my boat and I got a page from Jackie about taking a nap, but was a wrong number. lol. Okay? I’ll have to see what he wants.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t find Jackie anywhere and I could now go through the door to go up to the tower where I found the patient in there. It was a bat. I found some music on the table and played it.
Tumblr media
The bat came down and spoke to me, but didn’t make much sense. She seemed to know who I was, but her mind was hazy. However, the music seemed to break through the mist like a beacon.
Tumblr media
Jackie then appeared and was surprised to see me in there. He couldn’t blame me for being curious about the nutcase, they were fascinating. But he swears that Daria, the patient, was intentionally not listening to him out of spite.
Tumblr media
We went outside and Jackie said that the best thing for Daria was to just leave her alone up there and not excite her and said to not go back up there.
Tumblr media
I went back to my boat and I got some mail with the next installment of the Looter’s Literary Review with the next treasure map.
Tumblr media
As I headed out to find the treasure, I got a page from Jackie saying the power was out at the hospital and was asking for help.
Tumblr media
I found the treasure at the coordinates 193, 164. It was just some materials like metal sheets and stone. After Buck said I was amazing like a young pirate on a ship. Now to wait for the next issue.
Tumblr media
I got the last of the items for Elena’s errands, so I went to Francis the merchant and turned in the items for the two of them. And now that is complete.
Tumblr media
I also got the last of the materials for the last ship upgrade so I went to the shipyard and got the final headpiece. Now there are no more upgrades for my ship.
Tumblr media
I then went back to Overbrook to see Jackie and he said that the hospital was now just running on backup power. He was busy with patients and needed my help to get the power back up and running. He gave me a key to the elevator to get to the electrical panel and advised me to just push buttons until the power comes back on.
Tumblr media
I went to the other side of the hospital and unlocked the elevator to get up to the panel. I was able to then just press a button and the lights are now back on. I could also now ride on the electrical line to get back to the tower.
Tumblr media
I went back to Jackie who thanked me for my help. He then said he should for a revolt for getting better care here, quit and make pamphlets and the like, but he couldn’t quit. The place would fall apart without him.
Tumblr media
I went back to my ship and I got another letter from the Looter’s Literary Review with another map for my projector.
Tumblr media
I got the coordinates where I needed to go and set it for 54, 52. I got some more materials in the water when I got to the location.
Tumblr media
As always Buck was impressed with his pirate character showing through. I just have to wait for the next one.
Tumblr media
I sailed around for a while trying to trigger the next quest, but nothing happened, but I did get another Looter’s Literary Review magazine in the mail with a map.
Tumblr media
I went to the coordinates, 222, -20 and got some more materials including an album from the Dice Boys. Interesting.
Tumblr media
Buck said that it was quite a find, much like finding a rare tuna. He even went into an entire rant, in character, about the Tuna Wars...got it Buck, thanks. Now to wait for the next issue.
That’s all I did for today since nothing else was happening. I will try again tomorrow to see if anything triggers. Until next time!

So Bob Jones University finally listed their acceptable churches for students and employees. Yesterday Steve Pettit explained the new regulations in Chapel. We’ll get to what he said later. It’s pretty typical.
WutBJU first published this list nearly three years ago. But with much attention and falderal and praise for how WONDERFUL BJU is, they expanded its list by ...
... nearly 6%!
Way to broaden your horizons, BJU! All that attention. All that press. All those selfies. For seven more churches?
And you didn’t even curate your old list to eliminate the closed churches? There are as many added churches as closed churches.
So here’s the list that BJU was so proud of. Sixteen of the churches are KJV-only. Three are PCA and three are SBC. White Oak Baptist in on the list -- Bill Piper’s old church. Guess who’s pastoring that one? Oh, we’ll talk about that later.

Grand Opening of Accessible Horticulture and Education Center at Overbrook School for the Blind
Local officials will join Overbrook School for the Blind (OSB) students, staff, and Board of Trustees, for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the M. Christine Murphy Horticulture and Education Center - a LEED-Silver certified and planned Net Zero Energy greenhouse - on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m.
The 1,780 square-foot adaptive and accessible building houses OSB’s award-winning Farm to Table program and horticulture therapy activities. The Center is named in memory of the late M. Christine Murphy, who was a former OSB Trustee, neighbor, and longtime friend of Overbrook School for the Blind. Construction, which cost more than $1 million to complete, was made possible in part by a generous memorial contribution from Murphy’s husband, and current OSB Board member, Sid Rosenblatt, as well as a grant of more than $200,000 from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club.
“The creation of the M. Christine Murphy Horticulture Education Center represents a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said Todd Reeves, Overbrook School for the Blind Executive Director/CEO. “Beyond the gardening, nutrition and health and wellness benefits, this project will no doubt amplify many long-term goals we seek to foster in our students, including vocational experiences, greater independence and the values of lifelong learning.”
“Sid and his family are extraordinarily generous supporters of OSB’s highest priority - our students,” said Warwick S. Wheeler, Overbrook School for the Blind Board President. “We are deeply grateful for Sid’s longtime partnership and his exceptional support of this project.”
“Overbrook was a place in Christine’s heart,” said Sid Rosenblatt, Overbrook School for the Blind Board Member and husband of late M. Christine Murphy. “She was forever telling people to go to campus to see the work that they do at the school. I know that this Center will improve the lives of OSB students in ways - gardening, horticulture therapy, employment training - that would make Christine proud. My family - David, Anna, Ruth and many of Chris’ family and friends - are honored to be able to support this project.”
A grant totaling $201,480 from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club provided the Center with a high-efficiency misting and irrigation system; manual solar shades that will balance the temperature in the greenhouse, and reduce the electric, heating and cooling costs; and a 50-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system which has been installed on the roof of OSB’s Nevil Field House.
“Green Mountain Energy Sun Club is honored to be a part of this project and to support the life-changing work of Overbrook School for the Blind,” said Mark Parsons, Green Mountain Energy vice-president and general manager. “We seek partners that share our goal of a more sustainable world, both for the environment and the community. Overbrook School for the Blind is one of those special organizations that enhances and educates the lives of the people it serves and makes Philadelphia a better place.”
During the PV system’s first year of production, it is expected to harness and distribute more than 85,000-kilowatt hours and, in the process, take a step towards the school’s goal of earning a Net Zero Energy Building certification for the Center.
“We are beyond fortunate to call the Sun Club a partner in this project,” said Reeves. “Many projects strive to include sustainable solutions, but often struggle. Thanks to the Sun Club’s generosity, our students will now benefit from hands-on learning experiences that have been infused with energy efficiency, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship. While we are striving for a Net Zero Energy Building designation, it is difficult to classify these student impacts as anything other than a net gain.”
Additional key supporters who made the project possible include: the Connelly Foundation, the McLean Contributionship, the Arcadia Foundation, the Jessie G. Roman Charitable Trust, the Philadelphia Foundation and the Howling Beagles Foundation.

It’s Fine Press Friday!
This week we present One More Spring by Robert Nathan, printed in 1935 at Frank Altschul’s Overbrook Press in Stamford, Connecticut in an edition of 750 copies. The typography, cover paper and illustrations are by the noted American graphic designer W. A. Dwiggins. The figurative illustrations that open each chapter were created by use of stencils. The design historian Paul Shaw writes in the article “Tradition and Innovation: The Design Work of William Addison Dwiggins”:
“Several divergent influences can be discerned in Dwiggins’s many stencil ornaments and designs. The geometric patterns are similar to contemporary Art Deco and Art Moderne designs, though Arab and Moorish tilework was more likely Dwiggins’s source of inspiration. His striking floral designs have an affinity with Chinese and Japanese renderings of plants. And his odd color harmonies, such as red, green, yellow, and lavender, owed much to Chinese and Persian art. He described such color combinations as “a chutney-sauce effect with lots of pepper and mustard and spices.” Often criticized by other book designers at the time as garish or ugly, such color combinations are increasingly common today.”
Paul Shaw writes that W.A. Dwiggins’s illustrations in One More Spring  “make outstanding use of paper as part of the picture, deftly balancing blank space with abstract geometrical shapes to imply figures and scenes.”
Our copy of One More Spring is another generous donations from our friend Jerry Buff.

Typography Tuesday
This week we present some typographic whimsy from the Overbrook Press: tongue-in-cheek poetic allegories paired with illustrations made from typographic ornaments, rules, fleurons, arabesques, and cuts in The Pied Printer's Primrose Path; A Typographical Nonsense Book printed in 1940 at the Overbrook Press in Stamford, Connecticut, in an edition of 250 copies.
The Overbrook Press was founded in 1934 by the American financier and investment banker Frank Altschul, who maintained a lifelong interest in letterpress printing, book arts, and the fine press movement. Much of the quality and high standards of Overbrook production came not only from Altschul, but also from his designer Margaret B. Evans and his pressman John MacNamara. Together they produced an eclectic array of printed matter from sumptuous fine-press publications to well-designed pamphlets and printed ephemera before finally closing shop in 1969.
Our copy of this publication is another delight from the Jerry Buff Donation.

Women Type Designers: ANNA SIMONS
This week in our continuing exploration of type designed by women, we examine some of the letter forms produced by the German calligrapher and type designer Anna Simons (1871–1951). In her mid-twenties, Simons went to England to study art and eventually became a student of the renowned British calligrapher and type designer Edward Johnston, who profoundly influenced her work and the course of her career. Upon her return to Germany in 1906, she taught Johnstonian design concepts at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dusseldorf and later at Munich under the direction of German architect and type designer Peter Behrens. It was at Munich that Simons began to do design work for Willy Wiegand’s Bremer Presse beginning in 1918. Along with her assistant Franziska Kobell, Simons designed some 1400 titles and initials for the Bremer Presse. Simons continued to teach and work in Germany through the Nazi regime and died at 80 in Prien, Germany.
Besides her long association with the Bremer Presse, Simons also designed titles and initials for other private presses, including the Cresset Press in England and the Overbrook Press in the U.S. Shown here from top to bottom are:
1.) Title from Dantes Comedia Deutsch by Rudolf Borchardt, printed in Munich at the Bremer Press in 1922 in a limited edition of 153 copies. Gift of Jerry Buff.
2.) Title and the opening texts for “Inferno,” Purgatorio,” and “Paradiso” from Dante’s La Divina Commedia, printed in Munich at the Bremer Presse in 1921 in a limited edition of 300 copies. Gift of Jerry Buff.
3.) Title and three initials from Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson, printed in an edition of 530 copies at the Bremer Presse in 1929. Gift of Jerry Buff
4.) Title page from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, printed in an edition of 205 copies in London at the Cresset Press in 1931.

To apply for this grant, the person or small business must be in the Wheeling Heritage Area (the Wheeling city limits). Applicants may apply for up to $1,000 with priority being given to those with immediate needs of shelter, food, and other essentials. Applications will be open immediately and be accepted on a rolling basis. Grants applications will be reviewed and awarded on a weekly basis until funds are exhausted.
