National Pecan Day
On April 14, we celebrate National Pecan Day, pecan — a uniquely American nut whose fan base counts the likes of founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Whether it’s a garnish on a salad or a stand-alone snack, caramelized or roasted, sweet or savory — pecans never fail to deliver on the enthralling taste and the ultimate nutrient density. Did you know, America is credited for 75% of the world’s total pecan production? This fun holiday was established by the National Pecan Shellers Association in 1966 to recognize and honor the workforce behind the cultivation of pecans in America.
History of National Pecan Day
On National Pecan Day, America celebrates the only nut native to its land. Pecans are a much-celebrated nut of America, used in deserts, icecreams, and snacks.
Centuries before European colonization, pecans were cultivated, processed, and consumed in America by Native people. The word ‘pecan’ is derived from the word ‘pacane,’ used by the Algonquin tribe to describe a nut that needs a stone to crack open. The tribes valued pecan for its nutrition density, availability, ease of consumption, and fulfilling taste.
In the late 17th century, the native nut caught the eye of Spanish colonists, who began cultivating large pecan orchards in the vicinity. But it wasn’t until the 18th century that the commercialization of pecans picked up the pace in the United States. By 1802, formal selling routes were established, and pecan export had commenced.
In 1882, a hybrid fruit via the budding of pecan and an adjacent wild plant was created by Abner Landrum, a cultivator from South Carolina. This resultant nut was considered to be an upgraded version of pecan. Although the hybrid seeds of Abner got lost in time, in 1876, the process of grafting was recreated by Antoine, a slave from Louisiana. Antoine presented his discovery at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1976 and thus began farming a new and improved variety of pecans throughout the country.
Today, America is responsible for three quarters of pecan production in the world. From the summer lanes of Texas to the sunny pavements of California, pecan cultivation is a year-long endeavor for thousands of American farmworkers.
In 1996, the National Pecan Shellers Association members came together to establish April 14 as National Pecan Day. The objective of the day is to celebrate the earthly wonders of this nut and to uplift the hardworking members of the industry who make the sustainable farming of pecans possible.
National Pecan Day timeline
1772 The First Plantation

1775 George Washington’s Imprint
Founding Father George Washington plants a pecan tree in Mount Vernon, symbolizing the rapid popularity of pecans in America.
1943 Formalization
National Pecan Shellers Association is established to represent thousands of pecan farmers and shellers across the country
1996 Establishment of the Day
The National Pecan Shellers Association establishes National Pecan Day to honor the native nut of America.
National Pecan Day FAQs
How is 'pecan' pronounced?
The correct pronunciation of pecan is PEE-can. However, a majority of southern Americans like to say it as PA-kawn. How do you pronounce it?
Are pecan and walnut the same thing?
It’s easy to get confused, but walnuts and pecans are two different nuts from the same Junlandacea family. Walnut has a smooth exterior with a lighter color, unlike pecans, which have a chocolate brown color with definitive lines.
Can you eat pecan raw?
Yes! Pecans, like all other nuts, are edible in their raw form. You can carry a couple of these shelled nuts in your pocket to munch through the day, or you can scatter them on your salad for that extra crunch.
National Pecan Day Activities
Plan a pecan day
Host a bake off
Plant a pecan tree in your backyard
Indulge in the versatile offering of this great American nut by planning your menu around it. Start the day with fluffy pecan pancakes, then have butter pecan chicken for lunch. For a midday snack, enjoy a couple of candied pecans, and end your day with pecan-crusted salmon and some hot pecan pie.
From cookies to pies, pecans go well with any baking dish. So for National Pecan Day, host a bakeoff with your friends and family — featuring our beloved pecans.
Pecans are non-fuss plants that don’t require a liver and a half to take sapling. Plant the seeds today, so you can reap the nuts tomorrow.
5 Important Facts About Pecans

Pecans are underrated
Pecans are the O.G. American nut
Pecans contribute to the economy
The sweet and crunchy texture of a pecan elevates any dish it touches. Be it candies, cookies, bread, pie, salads, or ice cream. It’s time we honor the contribution of this humble nut in our kitchen and celebrate National Pecan Day with full excitement.
While cashew came to America from Brazil and the California almonds are actually a gift of Spain, pecan is the singular nut native to America. Pecans were widely consumed by native Americans before European colonization.
The American pecan industry is worth over $3.5 billion. Just 15 states of the U.S. produce more than 75% of pecan of the world. The pecan trees are responsible for the livelihoods of thousands of families and a flourishing U.S. economy

I made a delicious pecan pie to bring to my friends house the other night. She made crispy tofu mixed vegetables and cauliflower gnocchi which we boiled but probably should’ve fried. I thought the pie would be good on its own but then at the last minute I asked my friend if she had any ice cream and she said just ice cream sandwiches. Turned out to be a wonderful conversation. It’s the oat milk ice cream sandwich from Trader Joe’s that we used. The pie itself is the same pie I made in my pecan pie recipe video. So it’s gluten-free and low glycemic.

J2 Gold Panel DCCon 2022
They are both looking so handsome! And Jensen is wearing a leather jacket 🤤🔥
First question up is: what is their theme song?
The fan mentions that their theme song is Don't Stop Believin' by Journey, and Jared says that Separate Ways, which is also by Journey, is pretty badass then says he's gonna go with Faithfully also by that band because while he's not a musician he’s on the road a lot.
Jensen also goes with a road-themed song: On the Road Again by Willie Nelson. He says he’s been driving a lot the past couple weeks (not to nitpick but he was in Canada filming recently so timelines not a 100% accurate on his part) to see family because they're close enough it’s only like 4hrs from where he works and while driving back and forth he’s been playing a lot of Willie Nelson and that song has come up a couple times. He also mentions that he and Jared travel quite a bit and with the pandemic that wasn’t possible so it's made him realize that he truly enjoys being out on the road.
Now for absolutely no reason whatsoever I'm gonna go ahead and point out that Jared has been in Santa Fe the past couple of days just a small drive away (around an 1hr) from Jensen. Jensen who has conveniently provided the information that he's been driving a lot. Y'all do with that info what you want 😇
Continuing on a fan who owns a bakery wants to know what is their favorite type of pie? Jared says pecan pie a la mode to which Jensen in total husband fashion says that what Jared actually likes is a little pecan pie with his ice cream 😆
Jensen answer is either banana or coconut cream pie...so of course Jared makes a joke about bananas and coconuts. x
The third question is not a question it’s a very stupid joke but the boys banter with the person is funny so I’ll include a timestamp. x
Jensen was still thinking about the previous fans question about pie so he asked them what the best pie they make is, the answer is pumpkin. Jared makes an inappropriate joke, I had to pause 🥧
*sigh* Y'all we’re never gonna be free from prank questions. The next question is what's the best prank they've pulled on set together. Y’all know the drill they never planned pranks they just saw the opportunity to mess with someone and would take it. They say the only pranks they had planned were some they wanted to pull on MC but didn't get a chance to. x
Can they tell the story of how they met? 🥰
I know y'all probably already know the story, and I have written about it before, so this will be the quick version. Long story short they meet during auditions on the network test. By that point, Jensen had read originally for Sam but he told tptb that he wanted to read for Dean, and Jared had read for Sam but they didn't think he was a good fit at first because they wanted someone smart so his manager had to call and let them know that he is smart so they gave him a second chance so anyways they both arrive to the chemistry match network test and they were the only ones there and they start talking and the rest is history.
While telling the story they also talk a bit about how the audition process has changed, and Jensen mentions how he would try to throw the competition off their game in the audition rooms which makes Jared go into a quick non sequitur about how when G was auditioning for Wildfire there was this girl, who he and Jensen worked with, who kept trying to make it seem like she already had the role in order to mess with the heads of the others. This story had no point and no end because Jared doesn't reveal who the actress was he just tells Jensen he'll tell him later. The one time the man says something mildly interesting about that woman and he leaves out the most important detail of the story. x
What was their funniest moment or longest outtake? Jared says he has a few regrets about his time on SPN 👀
But that his number one regret is that while they did a lot of things producers do they never got that official producer label. (baby, I regret y'all never got that label too but also spill the tea) If they had they would have kept all the gag reels and outtakes. Examples that come to his mind to answer the question are JDM getting hit in the balls when they filmed the 300th ep also Eye of the Tiger.
Jensen says he's been listening to some of the podcast thing that Benedict and Speight are doing and Taylor Cole, who played Sarah Blake, was in one of the eps and she mention how when they were filming Provenance something happened in one of the scenes and she couldn't stop giggling and Jared also couldn't stop laughing so they had to take a break because they couldn't reel it in. x
I don't know if this was the moment he was referring to but the way Jensen describes it reminds me of this moment from the s1 gag reel where Jared and Taylor are laughing and then there's jealous!Jensen in the background.
We have another non-question, a fan complimented Jensen’s cover of Simple Man that he did on Jason Mann’s cover album. Jensen tells the story of how his singing that song came about; so Jensen had agreed to be on the album but they hadn't chosen a song for him to sing so one day when Jason was in Van for something they were in Jensen's apartment and he asked him what he wanted to sing. Jensen was lightly strumming the guitar trying to come up with something and the song he was mindlessly strumming was Simple Man. Jason asked what he was playing and made Jensen sing the song and Jason liked it and said that's the song we're going with. x
On the off chance that some of you have not heard the acoustic cover, which is what's being mentioned here, that Jensen did of this song I'm gonna leave y'all a link because it's beautiful 🎸
Final question, is there a method to their acting that they’ve kept throughout the years? And a part that they’ve drastically changed?
Jared says his method has been the same since Gilmore Girls, he doesn't really memorize lines he just goes through the script over and over again until it's like a song that he can sing along with even if he doesn't know the name of it or the artist. He'll read it front to back at different times of the day whenever he gets the chance so when he gets to set it's so in his head that instinct takes over.
For Jensen, it's the opposite. He reads the script once very, very slowly. Some scenes he'll re-read a couple times till he has a good grasp of it and has a really good idea of how the scene should be played and then he'll move on and keep reading the script, once he gets through it he won't look at the whole thing again; he will look at the material for the next day the night before, read through it and remember how it impacted him the first time he read it, instinctually know the idea he thinks he wants to do for that scene but still not memorizing anything. Then the day off when they block it out and figure out when they wanna be that's when the words lock in because he is marrying them to his physical space. So when they go to shoot he knows the words.
He says the biggest advice he gives to young actors and actresses is that you always want to be emotionally available in a scene so if somebody's bringing something you hadn't thought of you want to be able to react to it properly.
Jared says he wouldn't recommend Jensen's method to young actors or actresses because it's very difficult to do but Jensen's a black belt in acting which is why he can do that- he admires Jensen so much 🥰
He also says that his pet peeve with scripts is when there's stage direction like 'sam cries' or 'dean breaks down' because there are times when they get there and in the moment it doesn't feel right. Says there are several scenes in SPN where the script doesn't mention them getting teared up but they would get teared up when filming, so he hates when emotions are written.
Jensen adds that that's the good stuff when there were things that would surprise them within the scene; the nuance of the scene and nuance of the relationship or the dialogue they would find it and that's something that he can't tell us how much he loves being a part of that with Jared. Because they would find it so quickly and so much that it would surprise them. 💕

Thanks to @bonniesdamons for the tag!
favorite time of year: Autumn is the prettiest and it has Halloween, but I can swim in the summer, but I love Christmas- so I guess my favorite season is notspring. (Though I have nothing against Spring) [this is a hard question for me]
comfort food: Fried Chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy.
favorite dessert: pecan pie a la mode
things you collect: Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas ornaments, Christmas ornaments from places I've been, New Orleans postcards (old and new), books, apparently, because they are everywhere.
favorite drink: Constant Comment tea with Stevia. (Really it's Pepsi, but all pop is super terrible for you 😞)
favorite musician/band: I listen to Glee covers, even though that music is all super old now, Hamilton soundtrack, random pop, rock, and blues. But I don't have Pandora, Spotify, or iTunes so I'm involuntarily out of the loop, musically.
last song listened to: Saint James Infirmary Blues - Lily Tomlin
last movie watched: Ghostbusters (Original) and Ghostbusters (2016) These are October staples with me!
last series watched: I just watched the last episodes of Our Flag Means Death and She-Hulk
currently watching: Grey's Anatomy ( only for Harry Shum, Jr.), Ghost Files (on YouTube), and Interview With The Vampire (Though I don't have AMC so I have to record it at someone else's house and see it when they need a pet sitter)
current obsession: Harry Shum Jr., Sebastian Stan
dream place to visit: Ireland and Wales
places you wanna go back to: I have not traveled much, I've never left the country. But I would still love to go back to New Orleans, Louisiana and Frankenmuth, Michigan.
something you want: I really want to be able to buy whatever everyone I love wants for Christmas. I also really want Shadowhunters to be picked up, but I feel it would be unfair to the actors at this point because they've all moved on.
project working on: Getting my place into shape, then painting, then getting to the actual interior decor.
And I will tag:

Celebrate Fall by Catering These Apple-Themed Dishes
Fall is a magical time of year. The crisp autumn chill wakes the world from the heavy heat of summer. The days start to shorten, the leaves start to change, and everything feels just a bit cozier. A transition that enchanting deserves to be celebrated with the perfect seasonal food, and apples are a big part of the fall season.
Tumblr media
If you want to treat the team to lunch and have some delicious fall-approved food catered to the office, you’re in luck. Whether it’s the corporate catering Columbus Ohio businesses are enjoying or those in Miami, here are some classic apple-themed fall menu items to check out. Classic Combo with Pork Chops and Apple Sauce Pork chops with apple sauce is a special dish. For many of your team members, it’s likely to be a nostalgic culinary classic that recalls unforgettable home-cooked meals. It’s also one of the rare dishes that can effectively achieve double duty as a childhood treat and an elegant cuisine highlight. That’s because the complementary flavor profile of pork and apple is an undeniable winner. For a more sophisticated translation of this meal, look for a restaurant in your area offering a pork chop with three-apple slaw. Apple Pancakes, Waffles, or Fritters for Breakfast You don’t have to wait for lunchtime to order corporate catering! A day that begins for your team with a delicious apple-themed breakfast selection is sure to be a success. Look for catering options featuring apple pancakes or waffles. Don’t be afraid to go with regional favorites, either. For example, if you’re catering Nashville team meals, keep your eyes open for a southern classic like apple fritters. For a more savory breakfast option, opt for apple sausage or an apple-ham quiche. Light and Crisp Apple Salads Salads are light, healthy, and an ideal option for team members adhering to diets or with dietary restrictions. A light, crisp apple salad is virtually certain to be low-carb and paleo-friendly, vegetarian or vegan, and gluten-free. It doesn’t hurt that they’re also delicious. Check menus for apple salad options like apple-cranberry; beet, fennel, and apple salad; and apple and goat cheese salad sprinkled with candied pecans. A Main Course of Apple-Roasted Poultry or Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Beyond their comfy fall flavor, the appeal of apples in a fall dish is the subtle sweet tartness they contribute. That blend of flavors is as rewarding in sweet apple-themed breakfasts and desserts as it is for main courses. In fact, apple lends itself particularly well to poultry and pork dishes. Look for restaurants and caterers in your area that offer apple and herb roast chicken. For a bird more classically associated with fall, apple and sage turkey is a must. If you’re looking for something a bit more exotic and indulgent, smoked duck breast with apple-brandy caramel is a decadent experience your team will never forget. And, of course, remember to cap off your fall team feast with an apple-based dessert. Your team will love apple-pumpkin or apple-pomegranate cobbler a la mode, apple-strawberry or apple-rhubarb crisp, or the perennial American classic—good old-fashioned apple pie. I'M COMING BACK AT YOU WITH AUTUMN ASKS.
Holidays - do you prefer Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas?
Pinecone - are you crafty?
Pie - what's your favorite type of pie?
✨🌲🥧
Hiya!! Thanks! 🤩🤩 You sent a great selection 👌
Tumblr media
Holidays — do you prefer Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas?
Halloween! I’m not nearly as enthusiastically festive for autumn and spooky season as many are, but I love the costumes, cool weather, and candy. 😋😈 The bastardization of Thanksgiving in the US leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Christmas is nice but I’m relieved when it’s wrapped up. Puns not intended.
Pinecone — are you crafty?
I come from tremendously crafty people, so I live up to that once in a blue moon! I have lots of odds and ends, particularly scrapbook items. I need to get back into it.
Pie — what’s your favorite type of pie?
PIE!!!!! Any pie that I can get my paws on: peach, sour cream apple, lemon meringue, pecan, key lime, rhubarb, pumpkin, and on and on. I don’t think I’ve encountered a pie that I wouldn’t eat? And I’m not snobby either. I’ll eat a store bought pie, a homemade pie, a fancy pie, a scrappy pie, a frozen pie, a warm pie, a room temperature pie, a pie a la mode, a pie not a la mode.
Edit: This reminded me of a truly horrendous pie I had at a spring dinner event this year. I can’t even remember the flavor I was so appalled by this woman’s baking. Something went drastically wrong, like an ingredient mix up. A travesty. Again, don’t think there’s a pie I wouldn’t eat, but there’s several pies I wish I hadn’t 😂
Send some 🍁 Autumn Asks 🍂 🥰

National Pecan Pie Day
Beneath the shade of a Georgia pine
And that’s home you know
Sweet tea, pecan pie and homemade wine
Where the peaches grow.
Chicken Fried - Zac Brown Band
We’re simply nutty over today’s honoree, National Pecan Pie Day on July 12. It’s pretty easy to get behind a day dedicated to one of our favorite desserts. Indeed, 90% of Americans surveyed believe eating a slice of pie is one of life’s simple pleasures, indulging in 186 million commercially sold pies every year! People who prefer pecan pie over the many other types of pies describe themselves as thoughtful and analytical. We’re not sure if this still holds true for those who add ice cream or whipped cream but, nonetheless, it’s time to celebrate the delicious dessert today!
History of National Pecan Pie Day
It is uncertain how National Pecan Pie Day started but we certainly feel indebted to an unknown person because we couldn’t agree more with the idea of celebrating such a beloved dessert.
Pecan pie has a long, Southern history whose origins are highly debatable. Some believe pecan pie started in New Orleans by French immigrants, turned Southern, in the 1700s after being introduced to the pecan by Native Americans. Others believe pecan pie got its start in Alabama but this claim is unsupported by written recipes or printed literature. Of course, it’s not hard to believe many Southerners would love to lay claim to being the inventor of pecan pie.
Following the Civil War, commercial developers brought in a few varieties of pecans to grow in Georgia, which is now the main commercial grower of pecans in the U.S. Grafted pecan trees also became prevalent in Louisiana in the mid- to late-1800s. The name of the nut itself is derived from the French word ‘pacane,’ which is taken from the Algonquian word for ‘nut.’
The first printed pecan pie recipe surfaced in an 1886 edition of “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine. Years later, various forms of the recipe were published in well-known cookbooks such as “Joy of Cooking.” Throughout the early 1900s, Karo corn syrup was invented and yet another claim to the discovery of pecan pie emerged. The wife of a company executive shared her recipe using Karo as the ingredient of choice instead of maple syrup, honey, or molasses. Whether her claim is true, Karo corn syrup helped raise the popularity of pecan pie when they published the recipe on the product can.
While most hold the perception that pecan pie remains a Southern dish, in reality, its popularity has swept across the U.S. with regions taking on their own ingredient preferences. Pecan pie holds a place in the Thanksgiving trinity of pies — pumpkin, pecan, and apple — most frequently enjoyed by families during this holiday. Due to this, many also consider pecan pie a dessert to savor during the fall- and winter months.

What are Jason and the Squad’s favourite desserts?
Jason: Oh, jeeze, both of these are really specific: either the Iceberg's hot chocolate (no, I don't know the recipe, yes, I've tried to find out) or Pauli's apple cider donuts. I'd knock down a toddler for those donuts, no shame, no regrets.
Antoine: Beignets! I can't make them. I've tried. I get hurt every time, but that's what restaurants are for.
Frank: Pecan pie. I'm figuring out the best way to make my own, but nothing, and I do mean nothing, will ever beat my grandma's. She was one of those 'measurements are for suckers' kinda people, so I'm...doing my best.
Riley: Purin. I can eat it, which...hey, always a win...and who doesn't like custard and caramel? How can you go wrong here?
Trent: My mother makes halo-halo that would either start wars or end them. I'm getting better, but you know how that goes. Nobody ever tops your mom--Riley, if you even think it, your ass is grass.
Riley: >-)
Mark: Either Otter Pops-the lime one is the best one and anyone who says otherwise is a lying bastard with bad taste-or mint chocolate chip ice cream cake.
Jimmy: Brownies a la mode, baby. Straight up. Can't go wrong, can't fuck it up when you make it at home. B-)

THE  PIE  HOLE
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆   04/27/2021
what  comes  to  mind  when  you  think  of  pies  ?  your  grandmother’s  famous  apple,  with  its  sugared  lattice  crust,  perhaps  ?  or  is  it  your  best  friend’s  thanksgiving  pumpkin  pie,  with  its  myriad  spices  :  perfect  for  dessert,  when  topped  with  some  cream  ?  we  all  have  that  one  pie  that  comes  to  mind,  the  one  of  which  the  very  thought  sets  our  mouths  watering  &  excites  our  taste buds.  at  THE  PIE  HOLE,  there  is  a  pie  to  satisfy  everyone’s  tastes. located  at  ground  level  beneath  a  corner  apartment  block,  the  store  is  one  determined  to  pique  interest.  to  theme  the  outside  of  one’s  restaurant  after  the  food  served  inside  is  both  brave  &  foolish,  depending  on  the  restauranteur  &  their  kitchen  abilities  (  countless  times  have  i  seen  a  themed  restaurant  doubt  their  abilities,  &  break  theme,  rendering  their  outside  design  tawdry  &  obtuse  ).  owner  ned,  however,  has  no  such  issues  or  concerns.  the  kitschy  appearance  of  the  pie  restaurant  may  put  some  off,  but  for  others  it  will  be  a  certain  draw.
venturing  inside  feels  like  stepping  into  a  diner  straight  out  of  the  1950s.  1950s  nostalgia  reigns  supreme  within  this  place  ;  a  stark  constrast  to  the  world  outside.  to  choose  a  green  &  cream  color  scheme  is  another  brave  choice  by  the  owner  -  whilst  in  another  setting  it  may  remind  one  of  hospitals,  here  it  evokes  a  sense  of  warmth  &  serenity.  the  outside’s  kitschy  exterior  is  continued  in  the  large  cherry-shaped  lights  above  each  booth,  &  the  red  accent  color  throughout  ties  the  restaurant’s  signage  nicely  into  the  theme.
we  were  greeted  by  olive  -  a  pleasant  woman  who  seems  all  too  genuine  in  her  love  for  the  food  she  helps  sell.  the  menu  was  not  too  extensive,  &  it  seems  there  are  seasonal  options  offered  -  perfect  for  those  who  like  limited-edition  options.  priced  at  $5.95  a  slice  (  or  $5.95  per  ‘  cup  pie  ’  -  a  single-serving  pie  &  a  recent  edition  to  the  menu  ),  the  price  is  quite  reasonable  for  what  you  get.  upon  olive’s  recommendation,  we  settled  on  a  pie  each. the  youngest  member  of  my  group  got  a  chocolate  brownie  cup  pie  ;  the  middle  one  chose  to  opt  for  a  slice  of  classic  cherry  ;  &  i  myself  went  for  olive’s  pie  of  the  day  -  the  pecan.  all  three  pies  were  ordered  a  la  mode.
the  pie  hole’s  main  chef  also  happens  to  be  the  owner.  there’s  a  expectation  set  when  the  owner  is  also  the  chef,  &  that  expectation  was  met  the  moment  the  three  of  us  tried  the  pies.  through  a  large  arched  cut  out  behind  the  counter,  you  can  watch  ned  make  that  day’s  orders  (  both  for  in-store,  &  delivery  )  -  reassuring  to  those  who  might  wonder  about  the  freshness  of  the  pies  &  their  ingredients.  though  i  personally  did  not  try  the  other  two  pies  my  group  ordered,  i  was  told  emphatically  of  their  deliciousness.  the  chocolate  brownie  was  ‘  the  best  ever  tasted  ’  &  he  would  come  back  daily  if  he  could  ;  &  the  cherry  pie  had  the  largest,  sweetest  cherries  he  had  ever  tried.
for  my  part,  the  pecan  pie  -  an  american  staple,  &  certainly  something  most  of  us  would  have  tried  before  -  was  mouth-watering.  the  caramelization  of  the  pecans  could  not  be  faulted.
the  coffee  served  was  fine  -  nothing  to  particularly  write  home  about,  &  the  main  reason  for  a  4  stars.  though  there  is  an  espresso  machine  on  display,  we  were  informed  it’s  broken,  &  therefore  the  coffee  the  was  typical  diner  offering.  why  leave  a  broken  espresso  machine  out  in  view  if  it  is  not  an  option  ?  surely  there  is  space  to  store  it  in  the  back  until  it  is  fixed  ?
all  in  all,  the  restaurant  is  a  quaint,  if  not  downright  quirky,  love  letter  to  the  classic  american  dessert,  &  is  well  worth  the  stop.  it  is  clear  all  staff  harbor  a  deep  love  for  their  workplace,  &  everything  from  the  décor  to  the  uniforms  to  the  cup  pies  are  imbued  with  whimsy.   just  don’t  go  in  expecting  an  espresso.

We Meet Again
Who: Charlie & Gavreel @gradiangavreel
What: Charlie and Gavreel meet again after year and years.
Where: Pies & Whiskey
When: September 2020 (three months ago)
Gav
Gavreel was a little nervous to walk into the pie shop. It had a cute sign outside, ‘Pies & Whiskey’ but an even cuter owner inside. He'd been back in Gradian for three months already and he couldn't help but look up his old school crush. It was a smallish town, afterall, they were bound to run into each other at some point. He might as well get it over with. He bit his lip and took a deep breath before physically shaking off his nerves reaching for the door with a nod. "He's just a man," he muttered to himself as he stepped inside. He took a look around and was genuinely impressed. It was a nice set up, everything well put together and displayed. The pies even looked great and he wasn't a big fan if he was being honest.
Charlie
Charlie was still getting used to running the shop, it was fairly new to him. Baking was his thing, alcohol was his thing but finance was definitley not his thing. Good thing that in a town like this, shops never got too busy. He was pressing in some dough for some pie crust in a pan when he heard the bell of the door ringing meaning he had a customer. "Be right out!' he called out from the back of the shop where they baked their goods, finishing the crust and taking off his gloves so he could help the customer. He hadn't even really seen who had come in as he blindly came up to the register, he just noticed it was a man and from a distance, he wasn't half bad looking. "Hey there, welcome to Pie's and Whiskey, what can I get started for you, handsome." His eyes traveled to the man's face and oh shit, yeah he was definitely handsome, and he looked familiar for some reason but Charlie couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Gav
Gavreel was struck still in place by the deep voice calling out to him. This had, indeed, bee a terrible idea. He'd barely been able to speak to Charles as a teen, there was no way he'd be able to speak to him now that he had grown into such a gorgeous man. When he came out to fully greet him they locked eyes and Gavreel tried desperately to get his shit together. He cleared his throat and smoothed his shirt of nonexistent wrinkles, not having any idea what to make of the handsome comment. "Hello. Charles. It's been some time. Gavreel," he stated awkwardly. "Is me. I'm not sure if you remember. But... yes, I suppose I've come for... pie."
Charlie
It took Charlie a moment to register the name and put it with the face. It had been years since he'd seen the guy and damn if he hadn't grown up so fine. A big smile plastered onto his face as old school memories started trickling in. "Holy shit, man. Gavin... Woah, you're a whole fucking bloke now. Of course, I remember you." He huffed with a laugh. It was honestly so good to see him. He was always so kind to him in school, Charlie even found himself crush on the older guy back then but that was high school and now they were grown-ups, of course, that didn't mean Charlie couldn't look. Especially with those incredibly blue eyes. "Pie, of course. " He shook his head with a chuckle. "How have you been, man? What kinda pie are you in the mood for?"
Gav
Gavreel couldn't help the slight blush on his face, first from Charles recognizing him and second from the compliment. He shifted on his feet and nodded awkwardly with a small smile. "Yes, um, I've been well. And.. you?" He looked down at the pies and then around the shop a bit more. "I'm not sure which pie though."
Charlie
Charlie nodded, watching the man look around his shop. “I’m doing pretty great. I finally got to open this place. Dreams do come true, Gav.” He smiled at the older man. “Well, whatever you decide, it’s on me. Although I do recommend the Apple pie, it’s my specialty.” He winked at him, Charlie just being naturally flirty.
Gav
Gavreel certainly didn't know what to do with the wink. He stared at the man, heart beating wildly because he was a complete idiot. "I... um.. yes. Apple. That sounds good." He looked down at his feet and then back over to the man. "Congratulations as well. On the business. It's very impressive."
Charlie
“Awesome.” He grinned. The man was still as awkward as he remembered him and honestly it was very charming to him. Hearing the praise for his business made his chest flutter, at least someone appreciated it and Charlie was extremely proud of it, so to be congratulated and complimented on it made Charlie really happy.  “Well thanks, man. I really appreciate the compliment.” He says sincerely. “Let me go warm up that piece of pie for you.... I’ll be right back.”
Charlie walked away from the counter slicing up his piece and placing it his reheating oven. After, he added a scoop of vanilla ice cream wanting to make it special for his friend before returning back. “Alright, one slice of apple pie, a la mode.” He grinned proudly to himself.
Gav
Gavreel nodded and once again looked around the store, mainly trying to avoid actively staring at the handsome man like a complete freak. "Yes, of course." He wasn't entirely sure himself if that was in response to the thanks or the promise of pie. He took a deep steading breath once Charles was not longer facing him. He just had to keep it together for a little longer. When he returned Gavreel took the plate with an appreciative nod. "Thank you. It looks delicious. Um, how long have you been baking?" He asked both out of curiosity and a need to keep talking to him.
Charlie
Charlie nods and purses his lips in thought. “Uff, it’s been quite a minute. I mean I used to bake with my surrogate mom and my dads all the time when I was little and it’s just something I’ve always loved.” He answered as he grabbed a rag to wipe down the counter, trying to feel busy. “I went to culinary school in France and learned a few more techniques but yeah, here I am now with my new shop.... Did you want a drink to pair? I have a really good burbon that taste fantastic with the Apple pie.” He said excitedly, not waiting for his answer before pouring him the drink and placing it in front of him. “You need to try it.”
Gav
Gavreel settled himself down on one of the bar stools and picked up his fork to start digging into the beautiful looking pie. Now, while it was true he wasn't that big of a sweets fan, he could still appreciate a good dessert every now and again. He took a bite and tilted his head. It was actually very good: warm, flavorful, complex. He licked his lips of the thick filling. "The culinary school is evident," he complimented. He didn't have time to really respond to the question of the drink and simply accepted it as it was given. "Oh, yes. Thank you. I'll admit I'm not typically a big drinker so I'll have to stick with just this one unless you want to carry me out of here."
Charlie
Charlie wiped his hand on his bar towel  and leaned against it as he watched Gavreel try his best pie, loving to watch the satisfaction on a customers face.  “Awe, don’t tell me you’re a lightweight, buddy. Don’t worry, I’ve been working out so I could definitely carry you out if needed.” He chuckled. “So, tell me. What have you been doing all this time?”
Gav
Gav let out a small laugh. "Uh, yes, unfortunately I am telling you I'm a lightweight." The thought of Charlie picking him up bridal style popped into his head and almost had him choking on his pie. "It shows," he said awkwardly while openly staring at the younger man's muscled arms. He blushed heavily after a moment and took another bite to occupy his mouth for a moment. "School as well," he answered after a bit. "Down in London. I um.. I'm a counselor now. At the school. And also a life coach," he added. "At.. the community centre."
Charlie
Charlie grins at the compliment and follows the mans gaze to his arms. He couldn’t lie that he was definitely liking the attention, especially from Gav.  “Thanks, I try a bit.” He chuckled and  sighed softly. “Well, you just tell me if you need a ride home, I got you. Plus I’m closing up in like a half an hour.” He nods and bites his lip. “Oh nice, you’re helping out the kids. That’s awesome.” He smiled
Gav
Gavreel blushed and took a drink of Charlie's bourbon and grimaced at the burn, despite the  pleasant taste. His eyes widened. "Oh! I'm so sorry. I had no idea. I didn't mean to come in so late. I can finish up here and go."
Charlie
Charlie shook his head and dismissed the man with his hand. “What no, don’t worry about it. I have mostly everything done. Maybe I’ll even have a slice myself before I head out.”  He said as he started wrapping up the left over pies. “So I usually take home any leftovers, just cause I can’t sell day old pie, and since you’re and my last customer of the day, you’re the lucky one. Doesn’t hurt that you’re also very handsome, I mean you always have been” he winks. “So your pick of leftover cherry, pecan, or apple.”
Gav
Gavreel relaxed a bit after the reassurance that he was not being a bother to Charles. He looked between the man and the pies questioningly. "How do you stay in such amazing shape eating all this pie every day?" He blanched and shook his head. "No, I'm sorry that was incredibly rude of me. I just meant... well you are also very handsome and this is a lot of pie to take home." He paused. "That seemed equally rude. I will take the cherry."
Charlie
Charlie laughed, charmed by the man. "Oh, man. I'm not as in shape as you think I am. No six-pack under here." He chuckled as he pulled at his shirt. He chewed at his cheek with a grin and started wrapping up the cherry pie for him. "I also don't eat all this pie myself, usually hand some off to my neighbors or guests if I have them over. The pie definitely gets around." He nods and hands him the wrapped up pie.
Gav
Gavreel stuttered a bit. "O-oh. No I didn't mean.." He gestured towards the man's abdomen. "I'm not assuming what you have under there." He paused and looked down at the pie, blush growing on his face.  "Thank you."November 30, 2020
Charlie
Charlie shook his head with a grin. “Gav. It’s okay. We’re both adults here, right? It’s okay to assume.” He winked. “Actually I’m quite flattered that you’re imagining me with abs.” He chuckles. He leans against the counter in front of Gavreel, hovering over the wrapped up pie. “Is there anything else I could do for you tonight? You know before I close up?”
Gav
Gavreel cleared his throat and nodded. "Yes... well... the apple pie was very good," he said changing the subject entirely out of embarrassment. "I believe you've won me over as a customer. Do you... work every day?"
Charlie
Charlie noticed how quick Gavreel was to drop the conversation, guess he had read the signs wrong and he wasn’t all that interested in Charlie. At least he liked the pie. “Sometimes... I do like to give myself a day off, so I’ll close the shop every other Monday. It’s my slowest day and my best customers know where to find me if they need an emergency order.”
Gav
Gavreel stood and hugged the wrapped pie to his chest. He attempted to project nonchalance rather than nerves. "You'll be here tomorrow then?" He asked. "I may feel the need to try some more of you delicious creations. And perhaps we could... catch up?"
Charlie
Charlie leaned back to stand straight up. “Yeah, I’ll be here tomorrow.” He nodded with a small smile. “You’re welcome anytime, man.” He says as he starts keeping busy again. “Yeah, I’d be down. Maybe somewhere else though? Where  I’m not working all day and actually smell nice.” He laughs
Gav
Gavreel nodded. "Oh, yes, of course. Although, I think you smell fine." He paused for a moment, mortified that he'd felt the need to say that. "Perhaps a... restaurant?" He suggested to change the subject.
Charlie
Charlie laughed at Gavreels charm. “I suppose to you I might smell sweet. But it’s all sugar, flour and bourbon to me.” He shook his head with a chuckle as he ran a hand through his hair. He thought  for a moment before agreeing. “I wouldn’t mind dinner. You buying?” He asked, not actually being serious about Gavreel paying for dinner.
Gav
Gavreel felt his nerves return as it was sounding very much like a date, although he knew it wasn't. "Yes, of course. The invitation was mine, after all."
Charlie
Charlie nods. “I was joking. You don’t have to pay for dinner, man.” Charlie put down his rag, looking at the time. It was time he locked the doors so he could prepare to close. He came around from behind the counter, finally nothing separating the two. “Just gonna go lock the doors so I don’t get any stragglers coming in. You’re more than welcome to stay and finish your drink.” He serves him a smile and goes to the doors. “Also, dinner, you pick the place, my treat.” He looked back as he jimmied the key.
Gav
"Dinner," he repeated, getting a feel for the idea. "Yes. I will pick somewhere." He paused and then followed Charlie to the door. "I should get home actually. But I enjoyed seeing you again. And I look forward to dinner."Message #we-meet-again
