                           *:・゚・✧・ ryder’s family tree ・✧・゚・:*
stellan simms: ryder’s father / 46 years old / orlando bloom fc.
ryder has not seen nor heard from his father in years, not since the drunken and abusive nights of his childhood. he has got his own family that he left ryder and his mother marnie for so ryder’s got a slew of half-siblings he has never met and probably never will. we don’t look at him favorably.
marnie ( simms ) brighton: ryder’s mom / 45 years old / sutton foster fc.
although they have going through rough patches during the years she and stellan were still married, after everything, they have come a very long way. mama is one of ryder’s favorite people on this planet now and he has learned a lot about forgiveness through her. she is now the regional manager of all of the supercuts in chicago and lives a modest life.
patricia brighton: ryder’s maternal grandmother / 74 years old / sigourney weaver fc.
marnie and kelly’s mother, and married to richie brighton for 50 years now. she is an exceptionally kind and accepting woman who is a relatively accomplished children’s book author. naturally, she has long since retired. she likes to garden and cook and much of anything ryder knows how to make came from her.
richie brighton: ryder’s paternal grandfather / 78 years old / al pachino fc.
marnie and kelly’s father, and married to patricia for 50 of the most wonderful years - that’s what he will always say if you ask him. he worked for much of his life as a mechanic and later finished out his years before retirement as a car’s salesman. he and patricia live a simple life in seattle and are rather proud of thei grandson and children. much of ryder’s handiness has come from him.
kelly brighton: ryder’s aunt / 43 years old / rose byrne fc.
marnie’s sister, and daughter to patricia and richie. when ryder was younger, he couldn’t really pronounce ‘aunt’ properly, and is always came out like ‘ant’, just like his favorite sidewalk bugs! or so that’s what he would say. so it’s been ant kelly for as long as ryder can remember, and she’s always been one of his savings graces considering his upbringing whenever she’d come visit.
annabelle brighton: ryder’s aunt / 46 years old / maya rudolph fc.
married to kelly brighton, now officially, she is ryder’s aunty annabelle. by the time he met her when he was older, he could properly say aunt, but the nickname just sounded too good. a professional photographer and community center leader, annabelle is not only the fun wine aunt, but also the one who is responsible for any family portraits that ryder is thankful for.
peyton brighton: ryder’s cousin / 21 years old / paris belec fc.
daughter to kelly and annabelle, peyton was adopted when she was two years old and it took awhile for the adjustment in the brighton household. but, with the adoption of luke, their family truly fell into place. she’s working as a florist in a local shop and likes to help her mom’s photography shoots. she’s still figuring life out.
luke brighton: ryder’s cousin / 18 years old / ethan cutkosky fc.
son to kelly and annabelle, luke was adopted when he was only a few months old by the brightons. peyton was thrilled to have a little brother, and his moms felt so blessed to have two perfect and beautiful children. he too dabbles on the guitar, thanks to ryder but he will be attending USC in the fall to pursue a degree in journalism.

TOP O’ THE MORNING!
BEARS UPSET UW FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
SEATTLE – This one was worth the wait. At 1:22 a.m. this morning, the Cal football team culminated a wild late night and early morning with a 20-19 victory over No. 14 Washington at Husky Stadium. It marked the second consecutive season the Bears edged the Huskies in a defensive-minded battle of wills, but this one was far from conventional. With 9:46 remaining in the first quarter and the game scoreless, both teams jogged back to their locker rooms after a lightning warning was issued. The warning was accurate. The storms moved swiftly into the area. Within minutes of the delay, lightning was flashing in the sky. Fans were removed from the open bleachers of the stadium and huddled under cover or in the concourses of the stadium. Thousands made their way to the parking lots and resumed tailgating, but as the minutes turned to hours many just got in their vehicles and headed home. As the rain picked up in intensity, the sky was a continual flash as lightning was constant throughout the area.
The delay took 2 hours, 39 minutes, and it was 10:30 p.m. by the time play resumed.
What followed was an expected showdown of two of the top defenses in the country, and Cal came out on top after senior Greg Thomas booted a 17-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining. "We don't really have any control over the elements off the field so we're rolling with the punches there," Cal head coach Justin Wilcox said. "It's a little unique. I'm just really proud of the guys and how they battled. That was a gritty win. It wasn't the cleanest, but they just keep fighting. They are really a tough bunch of guys, and I really appreciate them for that." After amassing just 90 total yards in the first half, the Bears (2-0) began to figure some things out in the third quarter, especially on the ground. The combination of Christopher Brown Jr's bruising style and Marcel Dancy's quick feet helped Cal total 134 yards rushing in the second half, and Dancy reached the end zone twice. His second score from 8 yards out gave the Bears their first lead at 17-13 with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Washington's Peyton Henry connected on a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter – including a career-high 49-yarder with 2:05 to play – to put the Huskies back on top. But Cal quarterback Chase Garbers, who finished with modest numbers but also played a mistake-free game, engineered a late comeback. He completed a 19-yard pass to Jordan Duncan to move into Husky territory and then Kekoa Crawford gained 27 yards on a catch-and-run to move the ball to the Washington 3-yard line with 1:25 left. Thomas' second field goal of the night sent the Cal sideline into a frenzy, and the Bears were able to close it out. Everybody here handled it great," Wilcox said." Everyone is in the same situation. It is what it is. Guys did a nice job of refocusing and coming back out and playing." Brown Jr. rushed for 80 yards on 16 carries and Dancy added 72 yards on the ground. The Huskies moved the ball at times, but Cal's defense flexed its muscle when it needed to most, allowing just a singular touchdown in the second quarter. Henry made four field goals for Washington.
Cal’s All-America candidate Evan Weaver was arguably the best player on the field on either side, tying a career-high with 18 tackles while recording two tackles for loss. He also forced a fumble that was recovered by the Bears' Ben Hawk Schrider. Weaver did a number on the Huskies last year as well, returning an interception 37 yards for a touchdown to lift the Bears to a 12-10 victory.  It marks the first time the Golden Bears have registered back-to-back victories over the Huskies since 2006.
It is also worth noting that Cal has won their sixth straight season-opening game away from home, including wins at Texas, Northwestern and North Carolina.

Warming up to ales: the British beer movement brewing in America
Americans have long rejected Britains booze as too warm and flat but a new wave of brewers are seeking to change that
Tumblr media
Americans perceive several reasons to shun British beer. It’s warm. It’s flat. It’s bitter. Or, worse, it’s mild. Thanks but no thanks.
Instead they drink ice-cold Budweiser-type lagers or potent craft brews and leave the Brits to their eccentric potions.
Now a Minnesota-born brewer with a punk vibe and passion for English ale hopes to change all that, starting with “sublime pints” in Los Angeles.
“British beers have been flying under the radar here. They’re maligned and they basically apologise for being what they are,” said Andy Black. “We’re not apologising. We’re proud of what we do and want to be in your face about it.”
Black, 30, is the head brewer at Yorkshire Square, in Torrance, south of LA, which is riding a small, growing movement embracing traditional British-style beer in California.
He makes cask-conditioned bitters, milds, pales, goldens and porters which tend to be more balanced and lower in alcohol than US craft beers or imported Belgian and German brews.
Yorkshire Square has garnered buzz since launching a year ago and will on Saturday debut at LA Beer Week, an industry showcase otherwise monopolized by strong, hoppy India Pale Ales (IPAs).

Black considers IPA dominance the “hamburgfication” of beer. “I have a strong anti-authoritarian streak and like challenging existing notions.”
Other British-inspired brewers will also attend, reflecting evolving consumer palettes, said Frances Lopez, executive director of the LA County Brewers Guild, which sponsors the beer week. “We didn’t see a lot of British-style beers on the west coast so it’s been nice to see people gravitating towards nuance and craft beer.”
The festival will come on the heels of Britain’s national beer day on Friday, the anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215, a charter which among other things promised consistency for boozers: “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale.”
British beer, especially bitter, has long struggled in the US. Less cold and fizzy than domestic beers, it is deemed relatively warm and flat.
The name bitter – a type of pale ale which is not in fact very bitter – alienated drinkers who favoured smooth, light lagers. A 1990s ad campaign for Keystone Light mocked “bitter beer face” with images of gurning trolls.
Then came the explosion in strong craft beers with experimental blends and ingredients, including gummy bears, and British beer was deemed not too strong but too insipid.
“It’s a very misunderstood style, which is why it’s taken so long for people to give it a shot,” Lopez said.
In addition to Yorkshire Square, LA’s beer week will also feature local British-style offerings from MacLeod Ale and an extra strong bitter (ESB) from Three Weavers Brewing Company. Several British-style breweries have sprouted across the west coast in recent years, including Machine House in Seattle and Freewheel in Redwood City, near San Francisco.
“British beer? I think it’s on the way,” said Megan Krigbaum, a contributing editor to Punch, a New York-based online drinks magazine.
“Bitter” and “mild” – another misnomer – reflect self-sabotaging English downplay, Krigbaum wrote in an essay last year. But a trend towards so-called “session beers” – lighter fare allowing multiple scoops in social settings – is emboldening Americans to try British pints, she said.
Even so, Yorkshire Square refers to “bitter” only on the premises, where staff can explain it to customers. It is branded “pub ale” when sold outside. “People are very literal,” said Black.
The tattooed, pierced Minnesotan is an unlikely real ale champion. He studied anthropology and worked at a not-for-profit organisation before deciding to turn a home brew hobby into a career, starting with internships at breweries in Yorkshire and Sunderland in the UK.
Now with a 10-strong team, Black brews 550 barrels of British-style beer per year a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. The average alcohol by volume (ABV) is 4.3%, just over half of that of a typical IPA.
Gary Croft, from Leeds, had the inspiration for Yorkshire Square. Photograph: Dan Tuffs for the Guardian
Yorkshire Square was the brainchild of Gary Croft, an expatriate from Leeds who worked in pharmaceuticals before deciding to recreate British brews and pub culture. “I thought it was something Americans were missing out on,” he said.
Customers lauded the results. “You can have a handful and still hold a conversation,” said Ryan Trousadale, 32, seated in a sunlit terrace and raising a “1948”, a dark mild based on postwar English brewing records.
“Wonderful, low-octane social lubricant,” said Rob Tyrrell, 65, a retired aerospace worker. A welcome contrast, he said, with rocket-fuelled IPAs. “With the hoppy stuff, you better enjoy the first one because your buds are done.”
Jane Peyton, a beer sommelier and instigator of Britain’s national beer day, said via email that some US brewers were importing British hops to make British-style session beers.
Enthusiasm was spreading to imported beers, she added, with some Americans exalting brands with humble reputations in Britain. “I have lost count of the times that my clients have rhapsodised about Newcastle Brown Ale.”

The Midnight Moon by Gerri Hill
It was a fun, holiday romance under a moonlit sky. After exchanging passionate nights and only first names, Peyton Watts and Logan Weaver go back to their lives.
For Peyton, it’s a return to her steady, conservative social circle and the not unwelcome overtures from attorney Margot Joseph. Meanwhile, Logan’s free spirit is happy again moving with the college crowd.
So when fate throws them once more into each other’s paths, it shouldn’t mean a thing…
Genres: contemporary, romance

Defense Leads Way As Bears Upset #13 Huskies
Pick Six By Weaver Provides Decisive Points
BERKELEY – With the wide range of ups and downs that accompany a college football season, the Cal coaching staff preaches a level of consistency that will enable the Bears to weather storms and celebrate big victories all the same. So, in the aftermath of a 12-10 victory over No. 15/13-ranked Washington that brought plenty more highs than lows, head coach Justin Wilcox told his players that nobody should be surprised because the Bears have always been capable of competing with any opponent they face. That said, the feeling that comes with a signature win over a top-15 team can still inspire one heck of a celebration inside California Memorial Stadium. A 37-yard interception return for a touchdown by Evan Weaver provided the eventual game-winning points and capped a brilliant defensive performance as the Cal football team earned its biggest win of the season to date as they knocked off the Huskies on an afternoon turned to night in Berkeley. Cal (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) held Washington to just 250 yards of total offense and Weaver was right in the middle of the action all evening, recording 11 tackles to go with his game-winning score. Cal forced two turnovers without allowing one of its own and limited Huskies quarterback Jake Browning to just 159 yards of passing. Offensively, Patrick Laird led the charge with 83 rushing yards. Weaver's theatrics provided a jolt to the Cal faithful as the third quarter drew to a close. With Washington looking to backup quarterback Jake Haener to provide a spark, Weaver stepped in front of a third down pass on the Huskies 37-yard line and took off upfield. He cut outside and, once in reach of the goal line, extended his arm just far enough to tick the pylon and score his first career touchdown. "I dropped back, he threw me the ball, I caught it and I just didn't want to fall down," Weaver said. "Maybe two or three more yards and I would've ran out of steam. They didn't get me this time." The play put Cal ahead 12-7 with one second left in the quarter but the Bears' two-point attempt failed, leaving the margin at just five entering the fourth quarter. That's where the score stayed until the clock ran inside five minutes and a 26-yard field goal by Washington's Peyton Henry left Cal up 12-10 with 4:51 to play. That was as close as Washington (6-3, 4-2) got because the Bears simply wouldn't give the ball back. Cal ran the final 4:51 off the clock thanks to an eight-play drive that spanned only 27 yards but picked up two critical first downs, the last of which came on a six-yard run by Laird. "They're all big but (this win) is huge," Wilcox said. "It gives the guys validation and gives them confidence but we've got to build on it. That's what's most important. Everybody's really excited and it's a really great environment in the locker room, as you would expect, but I also don't think anyone's surprised. It's tough to win and our guys competed extremely hard and battled. I thought you saw a lot of toughness out there and grit and determination. We weren't perfect but we found a way to win the game and that's what's most I'm most proud of." Offense proved hard to come by in the first half thanks in large part to quality defense from both teams. A 3-yard touchdown pass from Jake Browning to Ty Jones put Washington ahead 7-0 after two drives but the Bears cut into the lead by the end of the quarter thanks to a 23-yard field goal by Greg Thomas. Thomas added a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter to leave the Bears down by just one at halftime but the high points of the first 30 minutes came mostly from a defense that limited Washington to its lowest first half point total of the season. Camryn Bynum made one such play, reeling in a pass from Browning and tapping his toe inbounds to secure an interception late in the first quarter.
