(I don't think I'm ever gonna get used to this release schedule)
This week, John covers one of the most sadistic forms of fraud I've ever heard of, pig butchering scams. This is an extremely bleak segment on multiple forms of misery, from the victims of the scams who oftentimes tried to do due diligence to the human trafficking victims forced to participate in these scams upon threat of violence.
I have been put into these massive WhatsApp group chats ~200 - 500 members. There are a few group admins, the country codes include +1(US), +44(UK), +7(RU/KZ). The majority of the people included in the group have +1 country code.
These chats are named something along the lines of "AI Automation wealth train". Generally the admins only allow admins to message the group. The chat also has these "bots". They personify a public figure related to finance. These "bots" are not admins, so periodically all members are allowed to comment. I've checked the messages to see if they were created by an AI like ChatGPT and etc., it seems like they were not.
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly these bots work. I noticed that at least one had a WhatsApp business account. It seems like the messaging is automated.
The messages are emoji filled, but seems to be "garbage". They want us to buy gold, silver and crypto. The messages tell us to buy crypto, one explicitly said etherium. They haven't posted an exchange or anything to use. I'm waiting for the scam angle (aside from the possible pump n' dump).
If you have been added to any chats like this and want to help me out, feel free to comment below or DM me.
Digital swindles generate billions of dollars for criminals. And they all start with a little bit of “social engineering” to trick a victim into doing something disadvantageous, whether trusting you should not or sending money into the void.
Now, in the Crypto World, a new variation of these schemes is on the rise, ensnaring unsuspecting targets to steal all their money: the “Pig Butchering…
So my dad texts me today about something big we need to talk about.
I immediately start to panic, thinking this is a cancer talk or something.
But no, of course not.
Instead, he's met someone new via a wrong number text and is planning to meet her and her mother in a month, but he's conflicted because he's been married to my step mom for 13 years.
And I have sent him a ton of articles about the pig butchering scam, because this is so clearly a scam. She's 23 years younger than him, 'independently wealthy' due to her crypto investments, and planning to let my dad retire from truck driving to help her run her fashion design business. And she's Italian.
He won't listen. He's saying he'll be cautious, but he still plans to go forward with this affair and meet her and her mother. To very likely leave his wife and my step sister in the lurch.
And there's nothing I can do to prove to this man that this is a textbook case of a romance scam because he's fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
Have you gotten a text message or email asking you if you’re “still on for lunch” or if your “house is still up for sale” or “how did your interview go” from somebody you never heard of? You typically assume the sender just hit the wrong number accidentally and perhaps you delete it, or … perhaps you respond to tell them they have the wrong number. BAD IDEA! Scamming has become a world-wide…
Pig Butchering Scams: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
I got one of these text last night before I saw this piece. I liked their initial message, something like, “ we haven’t see each other in a very long time.” Very wistful. I asked who is this, they sent a name and picture and asked for my name. Don’t give your name or location. I decided to give kindly grandmother. They said they were in Boston and if I went there we should get coffee sometime. I told them I hope they don’t meet people like that that often because it’s dangerous especially for a nice young lady. After they said goodnight I blocked the number.
After watching John Oliver I hope someone starts a help line for those forced to take part in this.
