TRANSFORMERS/GOBOTS FANFIC - SEPARATION PT. 3

Somewhere in the skies of Gobotron, a GoBot in the form of a fuscia-colored jet-like vehicle with vermillion accents flew erratically over one of the less-traveled roads on the planet. So neglected was this highway that its metallic surface was covered in rust, some of which had eaten away at the surface, creating massive potholes. Many of the lights that once illuminated this stretch of road had either failed or were nearing the end of their life, flickering on and off in a desperate attempt to stay lit. The only thing this flyer could really do to occupy himself was fly about as if putting on a stunt show. He desperately wanted to do more though. His proverbial trigger finger was itching, and he was tempted to just start shooting at the flickering street lights. "Why I must patrol this sector, I ask," he said out loud, his voice giving off as much of an air of insanity as his odd speech pattern. "Here is nothing! Nothing! Guardians? Travel this road does no one!"

One of the failing street lights finally flickered to darkness as he flew overhead.

"Nyah!" the strange Renegade shouted before firing a powerful energy blast at the pole supporting the now-darkened fixture, sending its top half flying over the edge of the overpass.

Just below this overpass, on an even more decrepit stretch of road, Dashlane and Turbo heard the explosive sound of the deranged flyer's blast striking the lamp post, quickly swerving out of the way as the severed section of the street light came crashing into the road in front of them. Scooter, who was tagging along nervously behind them, let out a terrified "Yi-eee!" as he quickly leapt into his robot mode. "Why do I get the feeling that light didn't just break by itself?"

"Nya-hah! Found something I have!" called out the voice of the lunatic who had blasted the light post out of boredom. "Guardians! Now for fun time it is!"

"Oh no, not Odd Ball," Scooter whined.

"Were ya expectin' someone more stable, Scoot?" Turbo snarkily asked before transforming into his robot mode and firing on the insane Renegade.

"Is any Renegade really stable?" the somewhat cowardly engineer replied before barely dodging a blast from behind.

"What brings you Guardians out this way?" asked Scooter's assailant, a beige mech with orange highlights and a brown blade assembly mounted on each forearm. "You wouldn't happen to be looking for someone, would you?" He pointed an outstretehed arm at the Guardians and their Autobot companion, but instead of firing an energy blast, he caused one of his blade assemblies to spin up before launching it at Turbo, who jumped over the projectile, causing it to cut into the guard rail of the overpass before coming back around and striking him in the lower back, sending sparks flying as it tore into his armor and sending him crashing back down to the ground. Dashlane growled as he transformed into his robot mode and fired on the malevolent mech. "Yeah, we are looking for someone, and we don't have time to mess around with a couple loose screws!"

"Who's to say you're not already too late? For all you know, CyKill may already be doing as he pleases with your friend."

Dashlane charged at the Renegade, growling in pure rage as he did so. Before he could reach his target, though, he felt a powerful blast strike him from behind.

"Hmm....Help do you need, Breez?"

"Perhaps," Breez replied before spinning up his other rotor assembly, aiming for Dashlane's neck with a look of twisted excitement on his face.

Scooter, who could barely watch as the sadistic Breez prepared to decapitate his Autobot friend, quickly sent a distress signal to every Guardian within range as he took cover outside a run-down and seemingly abandoned warehouse. It was one of the few things he could do since he had no real strength or firepower to contribute to the fight.

"I'm sure CyKill would love it if I brought him your head," Breez hissed as he brought his spinning blade down onto the teal Autobot's upper chest. "However, it might be more entertaining for me to simply incapacitate you for now...."

The blade began to cut into Dashlane's armor, causing the Autobot to grimace in pain as he aimed his blaster at the Renegade GoBot.

"...So that you can witness the fate of your friend first-hand. You're gonna love it."

Dashlane fired a shot into Breez's midsection, knocking the psychopathic warrior off of him. "If CyKill does anything to Skybolt, I'll send him straight to the Pit!"

"Who's to say you'll even get that chance? I understand that Skybolt has potential to be a great Renegade enforcer. You might have to go through him before you can take on CyKill. I don't think you have the bearings for that."

Dashlane screamed and charged at Breez, eventually pinning him against the wall of another one of the abandoned buildings that lined the street.

Breez responded with a smirk before spinning up his still-attached rotor and launching it at Dashlane's abdomen with such force as to knock the teal Autobot away while cutting into his armor. Eventually, the projectile had lodged itself into a vital Energon line, causing the potent blue liquid to drip out of the open wound.

Turbo, meanwhile, still had the other rotor lodged in his lower back. He too was leaking fluids as he lay face-down on the road. The blade had cut into a vital motor relay, leaving the Guardian brawler paralyzed. Odd Ball simply flew in circles overhead. "The real show...Begin it will soon!" he cackled.

Breez? Odd Ball? Why didn't I use characters like Cop-Tur and Crasher? Well, I like working with obscure, overlooked characters, and GoBots has a lot of those, given how the show worked. If a GoBot wasn't one of the Big Three on either side, or a major supporting character, like Fitor and Small Foot, they were relegated to generic roles, crowd-filler scenes, or simply never appeared in the show. I have a lot of free reign over their personalities. Breez and Odd Ball, along with the other Wendy's-Exclusive GoBots, were never on the show. They did have short bios that gave very basic descriptions of their personalities. Breez is described as a "dirty fighter" and "a Renegade in every sense of the word," so he gets to be a sadistic psychopath. His rotor blade attack is inspired by the fact that his toy's rotors detach. Odd Ball's bio paints him as being, well, an odd ball, so I made him an unhinged lunatic with a warped speech pattern. Spy Eye, who appeared in the last part of this fic, has no bio, but I based his personality (and origin) a bit on his design. He's a fully robotic GoBot, or New-Gen, and he's still fairly "young," so his emotions haven't developed yet.

645-647: "Destruction Cannon Blasts! Lucy in Trouble!", "The Legendary Pirate! Don Chinjao!" and "Light and Darkness! The Shadow Behind Dressrosa!"

There is something rotten in the state of Dressrosa right now. Doflamingo has some seriously shady shenanigans on the go. Turning humans into toys? Letting them live alongside relatives who - it appears - have their memories wiped? Tossing them for scrap if they show any signs of rebellion? Yeah, this whole situation is totally messed up. Now I get why a Resistance is mounting against the Donquixote Family. 

I watched three episodes because I thought I might see the end of the Block C battles. No such luck, but Luffy vs Don Chinjao has been fun so far. 

Still, that freaky Toy Human transformation reveal was totally worth it. 

(Will catch up on replies this week too! It’s been a weirdly busy couple of weeks but next week won’t be as rammed. :D)

Electric Fist Bump

I am still not certain that Brutal Bull is, in fact, going to recover. Let’s just pretend he will. At least Luffy gently carried him to safety and thanked him for fighting with him. ;_;

A random called Ideo (way too much eyeliner, Shoulders McGee) finished the job by punching Hajrudin out the ring. After Ideo’s brag-fest, I thought Luffy would be the one to kick his ass too, but it was funnier than that.

A random competitor called Jean the Bounty Hunter (no relation to Dog) had seen through Luffy’s disguise. He knocked off Luffy’s helmet and slashed his beard. Instead of giving up his disguise, Luffy chased him (lmao) to get his helmet back. 

Once exposing Luffy, didn’t work, Jean picked up all the weapons dropped by competitors who fell to Don Chinjao’s conqueror’s haki. Jean seriously thought he could defeat Luffy by carrying around a giant blade ball. Okay, mate.

Jean, at least, was allowed a quick shit-talk. He’d made so much money recapturing all the criminals Luffy set free from Impel Down. Now, Jean was aiming to snare Buggy (I guess he doesn’t read the papers), Crocodile, Jimbei, Ivankov and Shiryu (good luck with those names, mate).

Meanwhile, Luffy was standing there, reminiscing over all the old names like it was old times. “I wonder how Jimbei and Iva are doing?”

Jean got mad, threw his dumb sword ball and... it did not go to plan.

Luffy dodged.

Instead, a rather large and intimidating man absorbed all the swords.

Staring down Don Chinjao was too much for poor Jean. He was so scared, he made moe eyes before Don Chinjao took him out. (Good luck chasing after Crocodile from your new job on Doflamingo’s Factory Assembly Line!)

The fight between Luffy and Don Chinjao was actually fun to watch. The moment when they both punched out Sai and Ideo “Get outta the way!” was funny. And the Conqueror’s Haki clash was stylish (still love that blue filter), powerful (that Whitebeard soundtrack) and also pretty interesting.

Diamante watched the whole thing from his private booth. He used it as a teaching moment for Bellamy. “See, that is what it takes to be a king.” Don Chinjao sort of backed this up later when he said to Luffy that loads of people in the New World could use Conqueror’s Haki. “Only battling it out amongst themselves will reveal who the Pirate King will be. A battle of conquerors. That’s what’ll decide.”

I thought Conqueror’s Haki was a much rarer type. Maybe it still is, but that all the big shots are now concentrated in a smaller area, so there’s more chance you’ll meet someone with it. I know Shanks has it, I know Whitebeard had it, but I’m wondering if Big Mom and Kaidou also have it? (The jury’s out on Teach. Is he too much of a coward, or will he awaken it too? Who knows?)

Don Chinjao also kept veering between wailing with rage and attacking with rage at what Garp had taken from him (treasure and strength, apparently).  He also kept demanding Luffy tell him what Garp had done. Luffy was like, “No, you walnut. I have no idea. How many times must I repeat myself?”

Luffy didn’t know whether Don Chinjao wanted to be sad or mad. Maybe Luffy should set himself up as a therapist because I think it’s a bit of both.

At the moment, Don Chinjao has transformed into an Upside Down Tornado of Large Man, so we’ll see how that pans out in the coming episodes.

Oh, and by the way, Bobby Funk wore his brother like a jacket during the fight. Don’t ask. It was deeply, hilariously weird and I’m glad they got their asses kicked because I felt wrong watching that.

He’s Not an Idiot. He’s Directionally Disadvantaged

On the way to Flower Field, Wicka was astonished to discover Zoro is the opposite of a homing pigeon. They yelled at each other the entire time. Wicka because Zoro veered away from Flower Field yet again, and Zoro because Wicka “sucked at leading the way.” Meanwhile, the concerned residents of Dressrosa wondered why the strange man was yelling at himself.

Wicka kept punching Zoro for not going the right way. Because the Tontatta people make up for their lack of stature with super strength, I actually cheered when Zoro had enough of Wicka smacking him. He set her down in a plant pot, was like, “I have friends I care about too. Stop complaining or ask some damned cat to carry you,” then walked off.

Damn straight, Zoro. Don’t put up with that crap.

Luckily for Wicka, Zoro has no sense of direction. He circled straight round, which gave her the opportunity to apologise.

I guess it’s for the best. Otherwise Zoro would end up stuck on Dressrosa forever. Or at least until Sanji turned up.

And speaking of Sanji, he has teamed up with Kinemon again. They are currently lurking outside the Colosseum. They have spotted something ominous. Lots of Marines gathered outside, including new Vice-Admiral Bastille, waiting to swoop and arrest any unsuspecting Block A and Block B fighters leaving the arena.

I laughed at Kinemon’s weird cognitive dissonance. “Yeah, well criminals should be caught!”

Sanji would not have it. He smacked Kinemon and was like, “You are working with pirates.” Lmao, Kinemon. Old habits die hard, I guess.

At least Sanji has returned to the Sanji I like best: sneaking about, trying to solve problems. He knows Luffy needs to know about the Marines lurking outside, but how to tell him?

Plus, what’s happened to all the Block A and Block B competitors who lost their fight? Vice-Admiral Bastille is on to something. None of them have left the Colosseum. Not a single one. That is strange. Something weird, and possibly sinister, is going on here. (I wonder if they’re being turned into toys?)

This is Why I Like Nami

This was only a short scene but I loved it.

In the last couple of episodes, I assumed Nami, Brook, Chopper and Momo were retreating to regroup with a master plan to win back Sunny.

Nope. As if they would ever leave Sunny in the hands of an enemy. What was I thinking?

Even though Nami sees herself as weak compared to the DF eaters and haki users of the crew, she is not helpless. One, she is smart, and two, Nami has freaking weather controlling powers! Nami used both of those qualities to her advantage. Chopper and Brook were a distraction. While Giolla’s attention was on them, Nami readied some thunder balls.

BOOM! Direct hit on Giolla’s submarine. Now, as a DF user, she has no means to return to Dressrosa and all her goons were smoked by thunderbolt.

Your move, Giolla! :D

How About Hide-and-Seek?

Like, with a four day head start? 

No?

I guess Law must be content with running like hell from the two Absolute Monsters chasing him. Fujitora was not making it easy. Every time he sheathes that sword, a jet of purple (no idea what it is. Let’s call it pure purple) rocketed into the clouds and, hello meteor shower!

Luckily, Law can Room those and slice them like bread rolls, but Doflamingo’s bullet strings were another matter. Law scarpered, dodged, hid and tried to call Nami. To no avail. Why wasn’t she picking up?

“I know what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to buy time,” Doflamingo said. “And I’m not gonna let you have it your way.”

No Burger King for you, Law.

Poor, beleaguered Law screeched to a halt when he realised that, somehow, Fujitora had overtaken him. My new favourite Admiral was sitting on a rock, as if he’d been politely waiting for Law to show for ages. Then it was meteor time.

Even Doflamingo was like, “Wow, you have no mercy.”

Fujitora just said, “I’m all thumbs.”

Lmao, mate. Yeah, those extreme overkill meteors? I’m just clumsy. Nah, no one believes you, Fujitora. You love smashing felons. Admit it.

Meanwhile, deep underground, Usopp was beginning to regret feigning descent from Noland. The ominous, earth-shattering rumbles from Fujitora’s onslaught were passed off as “just Usopp’s amazing haki!”

When he realised the Tontatta people kept going on about the Donquixote Family, he consulted Robin. “Um, what kind of relationship do they have with Doflamingo exactly?” he asked.

“Well, they’re serious about fighting him,” Robin replied.

Usopp had an uh-oh moment. He drew Leo (the battle hype man) aside and asked why they wanted to fight Doflaming. That’s my Usopp! Asking all the right plot questions.

Apparently, the Tontatta want to rescue five hundred friends forced to work at the “shady factory”. Moreover, Doflamingo also holds their “obnoxious, selfish, mean, moody and short-tempered Princess Mancherie” there too.

Good sell, Leo. Good sell.

“Um, she sounds horrible,” Usopp said (lmao).

“Yup!” Leo cheerfully agreed. But then he added, rather sweetly, “But she’s one of us too. Noland would save everyone who’s in trouble, right?”

Usopp looked a bit ill at that point. He did not have to answer that question, as Flapper, another Tontatta kid, hoofed it into frame. Apparently, the Donquixote Family at the palace were on the move. Rumour had it they were probably moving to the Colosseum basement. And why were they moving there?

Under the Colosseum is only where the Shady Factory is hidden! :D

I thought the Factory would be in Green Bit. This is even better! Now I’m very suspicious about all the defeated fighters. They are prime for processing. At least I got one thing right about people being forced to work at the Factory (though it wasn’t related to stealing stuff). 

This Really Makes You Re-Think Toy Story

I knew it! I knew there was something weird with the toys. At first I just went with it because, well, One Piece, right? There are giants, sentient fruit-eating swords, dudes stuck in barrels. Anything goes, right? I mean, who can explain the wonder of Gekko Moria?

Turns out this does not extend to talking toys. Talking toys are not normal. Unless they’ve been invented by Vegapunk, as Franky rightly thought.

Nope. These toys are not the work of Vegapunk.

They are the product of a twisted Devil Fruit user under the employ of Doflamingo, who transforms humans into toys.

Why? I have no idea.

But the reason has got to be some dodgy kind of punishment for something. 

There was a creepy scene when a toy desperately tried to convince the woman who was once his girlfriend that he was a human, that they once lived together, were once happy together. The trouble was, his girlfriend could not remember him! She looked at him in disgust, said, “This toy has human syndrome!” and he was dragged off to a ominous looking building with the word SCRAP emblazoned above a forbidding door.

It seems a lot of the toys remember being human. Sol spoke to a guy called Milo, who is currently masquerading as Onepoko-chan the dog. Turns out the boy who plays with him is actually his son, and the boy’s mother is his wife.

What. The. Actual?

Sol asked the boy if he had a dad. Nope, was the answer. What about the wife? Had she ever been married? Don’t be silly.

Something really, really weird is going on here. And I never even mentioned the midnight curfew. Anyone who is caught outside after then is arrested (and probably turned into a toy). Toys and humans are allowed to hang about during the day, but at night? They are segregated. Toys live in toy homes. Humans remain in their homes.

This is totally weird and cool and I cannot wait to see where this goes.

Every time questions are answered in Dressrosa, another ten rise to take their place. :D

INTERWEAVE’S FREDERICO ROBERTO JOINS OUR FINAL JURY

It’s an honour to have Portugal-born, London-based creative Frederico Roberto on our Final Jury at AD STARS 2020.

Born and raised in Portugal, Frederico Roberto says that solving problems has been his life's mission ever since he used to dismantle his brother's toys and try and reassemble them, usually unsuccessfully, as a kid.

Today, he is Executive Creative Director at Interweave in London – a digital marketing agency that is headquartered in Athens. He is heading up the creative vision for its new London office.

Before Interweave, he was Global Creative Director at OLIVER inside Unilever’s U-Studio. Outside of work, he is a self-confessed movie geek, tech nerd, gadgets aficionado and video games addict. Welcome to our jury, Frederico!

You joined Interweave four months ago in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. How are things going?

It's going great. Interweave's expansion plans were in the making for more than a year, and obviously no one could foresee the COVID-19 pandemic. Being a Greek agency, based in Athens, Interweave knows all about resiliency and thriving in an environment that's adverse. That's why it wanted to set up shop in London from the get-go. It made total sense in a post-Brexit context to help the UK regain its importance, its role, globally, by looking inwards into its own industries, its own expertise and what makes it great.

Now, in a post COVID-19 era, it makes even more sense. Interweave’s core value is that 'We truly care' about the stuff we're involved with. That was the whole reason why Aigli Balamatsi, our founder and CEO, started the agency in the first place 7 years ago, at the height of the devastating financial crisis that dragged Greece downwards. By focusing on what Greece had to offer, Interweave became a key societal agent to help the country make a strong comeback in less than 5 years. The same has happened now. Interweave was the Greek government agency that helped with all the COVID-19 awareness campaigns, helping the country become the first to effectively lockdown and successfully come out on top of this situation. And it's not over yet. So, there are lots of opportunities out there, both in the UK and in Greece, to do work that's truly culturally impactful.

You like to break rules. What rules have you been breaking lately?

We're trying to do something truly unique with Interweave London. When the invitation was addressed to me to head the creative vision for the UK, my first question was, "Who needs another agency in London?" But the fact is we have something that nobody else has: at our heart, we want to do good. We believe that brands and companies can be amazing forces of change in our societies and impact people's lives positively with their products and services. So, we want to bring more of those "agents of change" together. Like the Avengers. We're Nick Fury and we assemble the best teams, from any sector, and we try to effectively drive change and transform business through creativity. That to me is breaking the rules of the classic agency/holding company model.

You spent two years at OLIVER inside Unilever's U-Studio. What did you enjoy most about the in-house agency model?

The relationships with the brand directors and setting up the culture of an agency inside a client. I joined OLIVER after 17 years of 'traditional' and digital agencies. I was already a Creative Lead for the past 6 or 7 years and I felt the need to work more collaboratively with key stakeholders, understand their businesses beyond comms, beyond marketing. Understand all of their processes, from distribution to retail, to spot creative opportunities. Working on-site, side-by-side with the 300+ UNILEVER brands was mind-blowing. A fast-paced environment, super agile, super eager to do good work with minimum fuss and all-in access to the decision makers 24/7. For a creative, that's heaven.

In 3 years (2 with me there) we opened 23 U-Studios around the world and built a global team of almost 500 people. We quickly became UNILEVER's biggest digital agency. And there's no signs of that stopping. OLIVER truly innovated with its on-site model and I'm very happy that I was part of that. Our industry frowns upon on-site agencies, as if creativity is limited to or by four walls. That's ridiculous. When you live and breathe creativity, you find your moments and your culture of delivering truly impactful work.  

Diversity is a big topic around the world, and Unilever is one of the companies that is leading the way. How can agencies do better at diversity?

They have to start putting their money where their mouth is and hire differently. And then I hear, "Well, we hire by talent, not race, nationality or gender". Bollocks. If you're confident that you've a good creative culture and you're a good creative lead, you train that talent. Because that person of colour, that woman, that foreigner will come with life experience. That's what you're hiring. It's that simple. Give people the opportunity to do things differently. Start with the hiring process.

Do you ever struggle with advertising’s role in selling people things they may not need? Is there a meaningful campaign you’re especially proud of making?

No. No struggle. Not really. Truly great work taps into a need. That need can be more or less primary, for sure, but it's always a need. I really don't understand how people can work in advertising and criticize what they do or the wider capitalist society they live in. It's not perfect, for sure, but it's what sets most of the western world. This said, I do love a particular campaign me and my team created at VML for Colgate, where we helped reach out to millions of women around Europe to position their whitening toothpaste as part of their beauty routine. We celebrated all types of beauty and the potential of a makeup-free face in the morning, to do whatever their mood is that day. It was great, ground-breaking for the category and truly meaningful.

You recently wrote on Medium about the need to “care more”. In what ways do agencies need to care more?

There's a lot of talk about brands with purpose. And I believe in them. But I'm more purist than that and I like to just call it "do the right thing". That's it. Most of the times all companies need to do is disregard their board members' pay checks. Or at least that’s part of it, I know this is very romantic. Bernbach said: "It's not a principle until it costs you money". Care means doing the right thing by team members, partners and clients. Showing loyalty. In the long run, it will pay off. It always does.

The worst-case scenario is that you have paid, literally, to learn that team member A or Client B were not worth having in the fold. And that's ok. But agencies are not caring enough about their role and responsibility in reaching out to millions of people out there. They have an active voice and sometimes they're actively choosing not to use it. Crazy!

What makes you angry? What brings you joy? What sets your soul on fire?

It's very hard for me to get mad or angry. I guess, lack of ambition or drive kind of disappoints me a bit. Sometimes I see it in some team members, for various reasons, professional and personal, and as a team leader, I have to be able to adapt and manage all those energies properly, in the most human of ways. And sometimes you don't have to manage at all. You just have to unleash creativity. That's what I love. To just go wild creatively and explore what's out there, invent what’s not there. I use to say that my creative KPI is when I hear an idea and the hair from the back of my neck goes up. That's when I know we're on to something.

You founded a networking group called International Creatives in London. How does the London advertising scene compare to Portugal: Is it more cut-throat? More challenging?

I've been in the UK for 7 years now, and in the beginning it was a bit of a clash, obviously. Things took their time in London, a lot of money is involved, a lot of big projects, big responsibilities. I was coming from a small market, where everything is for 'next week', budgets are smaller and in which ideas had to really work hard to cut through. London also pigeonholes quite a lot the talent. If you do TV, you only do TV. If you do social, you only do social. If you have beer sector experience, you're only sought out to do beer projects. It's extremely restrictive and to be frank, silly. But, slowly but surely, I've adapted and always tried to bring a bit of mischief to this paradigm.

The International Creatives London was born out of this need to help newcomers to adapt faster and smoothly to a new culture, both the day-to-day and agency life. Ha! I wish. But no. Not at the moment. I've presented a couple of times a keynote on Space Brands, on which marketing powerhouses will lead the space exploration industry. The usual suspects like Apple, NIKE and others will surely be out there (literally), but I'm sure we'll have some surprises. I just love the fact that space became a thing again. During Carnival and Halloween, you can see kids dressing up as astronauts again like in the late ’60s. It's really powerful culturally, and it's probably the only thing in the world that unites us as people.

Why did you agree to judge the AD STARS 2020 Awards, and what are you most looking forward to?

Over the past few years I've been travelling a lot to the East. And there's a culture of making stuff happen that's refreshing and you don't see it all that often in the western world. It's tech with a purpose, tech as a lifestyle, it's money and visionaires to back big projects up and it's a melting pot of SO many cultures. It's the second time I'm judging the Korean AD STARS, and for me as a creative, it's very inspiring – and different! – to be in contact with work and styles that I normally wouldn't. And that's what you need to chase.

Abandoned Places: Turnabout

In this session, I saw the “full party death” screen for the first time.

            I tried hard to finish Abandoned Places for this entry, pouring almost 16 hours into it over the last six days, but I’m not quite there. It’s been very frustrating, and I wish I’d just wrapped it up when I was toying with it last time.

       The frustration has come more from length and size than difficulty. If a game isn’t giving you what you want, the last thing you want it to do is persist, but Abandoned Places has unearned dreams to be epic. It started in the Hall of Light, which was about as big as a single regular dungeon level. The “proving grounds” at Souls Abbey was another level, then another at the library of Kal Kalon. The Steps dungeon had two levels, and that’s where I learned that I would need to find three Ruling Symbols–sword, orb, and staff–each broken into three pieces and secreted in three different dungeons. Each was only one level, but that was still another nine dungeons. Then, each Symbol required a fourth dungeon where I’d find an altar to assemble them, so that was another three. Once I had all three Symbols, Bronakh appeared and challenged me to get through a dungeon called the Halls of Rage.

          All told, I’ve been through 18 dungeon levels. That’s five more than Dungeon Master already. If you’re going to make a game in this style, you’ve got to supply something to keep it interesting. Options could be:

             Challenging combat. Make the player really fight for every inch. Make every foe memorable. Require the player to explore the full range of spell capabilities. Improve enemy AI and tactics on each new level.

Challenging puzzles. Really work the player’s mind with the mechanical puzzles. Force him to take a lot of notes and maps and make leaps of logic.

Interesting environment. Make the dungeon immersive. Blow the player’s mind with scenes and vistas that he’s never seen before.

Interesting stories. Give each level a backstory and character. Populate it with lore and encounters that fill in an ongoing narrative.

             Dungeon Master made itself famous with the first two options, particularly the second. Ultima Underworld went largely with the latter two but also had some interesting puzzles. Abandoned Places, at least for most of its run, does none of them. For 14 of the 18 levels I’ve experienced so far, the enemies have been staggeringly easy, and for 17 of the 18, the puzzles have been entirely of the rote mechanical kind. Push a switch here to open a door somewhere else. Dungeon Master had puzzles like that, too, but it kept you guessing. That switch might open one door but close another. Or you might need two switches to open the door. Or the switch might have multiple settings. Or it might only open the door for a limited period of time. I learned to play Dungeon Master and most of its lineage (e.g., Eye of the Beholder, Knightmare, Black Crypt) by carefully mapping without touching anything, then slowly testing things out. In Abandoned Places, you might as well pull a lever the moment you see it because there isn’t going to be any trick to it.           

The game has some interesting wall textures. Sometimes it’s tough to tell what’s interactive and what’s not.

           Some of the levels got highly annoying in their attempts to artificially stretch the length. A switch in the southwest corner opens a door in the northeast corner, for instance. Going through that door leads you to a lever that opens a door back in the southwest corner. Solving most of Abandoned Places‘ levels means making multiple “loops” through the dungeon, checking for what changed since the last time you were there. In that sense, the dungeons have been relatively linear and I’ve only been mapping spottily, mostly during those times when I ran out of options and I needed to make sure I hit every square and studied every wall again. Some of the buttons and switches are awfully hard to see.

Pressure plates on floors tripped me up a couple of times. You can’t see them; you have to listen for them. There are times I unthinkingly started playing without my headphones on and thus didn’t note when I walked over a floor plate. This isn’t a big deal if you only walk over it once–it probably just opens some door that you needed open anyway. But if you walk over it a second time, it closes the same door. Only if I wasn’t wearing my headphones the first time and was the second time, I might think I just walked over it for the first time and thus avoid it in the future, unknowingly locking myself out of an area until I get the whole thing sorted out.            

The game is fond of occasional messages, most of which have no relevance to the level.

           I said “for 14 of the 18 levels” above. Things changed a little after I recovered all of the Ruling Symbols. The next three levels required me to find the altars to unite the pieces of each symbol. The location of each dungeon was revealed to me as I exited the dungeon where I found the third piece. The game had a bug where it told me the Tower of Scions twice when it really meant to give me Draken Tor for one of the two, but I sorted that out with an online walkthrough. Anyway, the enemies in the three “altar” dungeons were much harder than those I’d encountered previously. They weren’t hard compared to Dungeon Master or any other game of this subgenre, but they were harder than before. I had to be a little more careful in combat and a couple of times rest between battles.          

Exiting each dungeon after you find the third piece of the Ruling Symbols brings up a message that tells you the location of the altar to unite them.

            On the subject of resting, theoretically the hunger system ought to discourage you from doing it too often unless you bring a huge supply of food with you from town. But I discovered through experimentation that the characters’ health regenerates faster than hunger depletes it. The ratio is about 1.4 to 1. So as long as you don’t mind dealing with everyone saying “oof!” about once a minute as hunger pains drain a hit point, you might as well ignore the whole system. Spell points regenerate much slower than hit points, unfortunately, and there were a couple of times that I parked my party in a corner while I did something else for 20 or 30 minutes so their spell power would regenerate.

         Let me take a diversion to complain about spells. While warriors suffer a “cool down” period after physical attacks, there is no similar pause after spells. The mage’s ability to destroy every foe with whatever offensive spell she chooses to cast is limited only by her mana. Because a player with a normal index finger can double-click the mouse about five times a second, it really doesn’t matter whether the mage is casting “Electricity,” “Fireblast,” “Mage Bolt,” “Ice Strike,” or whatever. The spells that cost more points do more damage, but you can cast them so fast that it hardly matters whether you cast three “Fireblasts” at 8 points each or four “Electricities” at 6 points each (or, for that matter, twelve “Mage Bolts” at 2 points each; and yes, I really do need to standardize when I use digits and when I spell it out). There might as well have just been one generic “Blast” spell for mages.

     My cleric has lagged well behind the others in character development because he can’t swing a weapon to save his life, even though I bought an amulet and a ring meant to improve his abilities. He currently has 52,877 experience points compared to my primary warrior’s 269,512. He gets some offensive spells, but I needed to save most of his spell points for healing, particularly as the foes got more difficult. “Cure of Gods” came along just as I was getting sick of having to cast “Minor Cure” dozens of times, and then he got “Healing,” which restores all hit points for 10 spell points. Equally important are his exploration spells, including “Swimming,” “Walk on Fire,” and “Jump,” the last of which lets you jump over a square. That became vital in the Halls of Rage.                

How is walking on fire a spell, but general fire resistance isn’t?

            Before I get to the Halls, I’ll just talk a bit about the economy. It’s relatively generous as long as you save and sell extra weapons, gems, and jewelry. (Oddly, extra armor can’t be sold.) There’s nothing useful to buy in the armory, but jewelry stores sell Rings of Mighty Attack, Amulets of Strength, Amulets of Speed, and Rings of Protection, and I was able to give each character some new item every two or three dungeon levels. Now my inventory slots are full, so I only need to keep a little money to buy passage into towns and the occasional meal or room at an inn. I’m thinking about dumping most of it because it weighs you down, and I think slows you in combat.

I don’t want to suggest that none of the dungeon levels prior to the Halls of Rage had anything interesting. The Summer Vale had 12 small interconnected levels (all of them together still equaling the size of one standard level) which were a challenge to map. The dungeon near the Lake of Dreams had a maze of single squares in which three of the four walls had levers that activated teleporters. There was a way to find your way through using messages, but I mapped the whole thing by dropping items on the floors. Still, until the Halls of Rage, that’s about as exciting as it got.

Once I united the three Ruling Symbols, I got an image of a crown for some reason. The Symbols themselves disappeared from our inventories. Then the weirdest thing happened: the game said that I had “new powers”–specifically, we could all transform ourselves into bats and fly across the landscape, avoiding random encounters and no more relying on boats to get between islands. (For some reason, the option to transform into a bat is activated by a button that looks like a hot air balloon.) I mean, I guess I appreciate the ability, but it really came out of nowhere. Perhaps it has some root in the frequent representation of vampires in Hungarian folklore? If so, it’s the only Hungarian-influenced thing I’ve seen in the game so far.                

Maybe now that we have the “Ruling Symbols,” we’re now “rulers”?

              The Halls of Rage was the final dungeon I explored for this entry, and it completely changed all the rules. It showed that the developers were capable of extremely challenging environments; they just didn’t implement them for the 17 previous levels. It was one of the most hateful dungeon levels that I’ve ever experienced, full of things that the game hadn’t even hinted were possible before. Fireballs roar continually down the hallways. Plants suddenly come alive and eat you when you’re adjacent. There are perpetually spinning squares in which you have to fight enemies coming at you from all directions without being able to stop yourself spinning. There are teleporters that dump you into the middle of fire or water. If you try to outsmart them by having “Swimming” or “Walk on Fire” active, they up the ante by dumping you on squares that cancel magic and are on fire. There’s one long corridor full of fire with one square in the middle that cancels magic and another just after it that spins you around, so you go racing through it at a panic when you lose “Walk on Fire” only to find that you’ve just returned to where you started. One whole section of the level features a puzzle where you have to push or pull planters around to clear a path, but one wrong move can leave you in a “walking dead” scenario. Getting through this level took me about six times as long as any other level. It was like playing an entirely different game.

             Check out this particularly awful area. You come into here from the western corridor. The moment you step on the “T@” square, it teleports you to one of the spinners (“@”) on the north or south ends of the room. They spin continually, so you have to try to walk off of them while they’re spinning. If you’re lucky, you walk into one of the safe corners. If you’re unlucky, you walk into one of the “FB” squares and fireballs–the kind that kill your entire party in seconds–come roaring out of the opposite end of this north/south section. Meanwhile, the plants in the two “P” planters are alive and biting you while you stand adjacent to them.

            Your only hope moving forward is to get to one of the doors on the east end, but there are enemies behind the doors–ghosts–and if they step into the doorway and block the path, you have to try to fight them while getting slammed with fireballs. That doesn’t work. So you have to lure them out into one of the corner squares, deal with them, and then get to the end of the room.                

Plants attack you in this dungeon, and you can’t fight them back. They’ve always been non-hostile before.

            The middle room has a secret wall behind it with a treasure chest on the far side. This is the ostensible goal of the area. But the only way to get into this area is to step on three successive fireball squares, each one of which continually launches fireballs as long as you’re on the square. So somehow you have to quickly sidle to the door, press the lever to open it, and hope that the enemy on the other side stays back long enough for you to walk through the door and escape the fireballs. Oh, and the one right in front of the door (“FB!”) also cancels magic, so you’re doing this with no protection and in the dark. I don’t think “Mage Shield” and “Walk on Fire” and other spells really help in this situation, but it would have been nice to have some false hope.

     The treasure chest, by the way, is entirely optional. I mean, this is the sort of game where you have to check everything, but it turns out that you don’t even need to be in this area. The problem is that once you step on “T@” and get teleported to one of the edge squares, there’s no good way to escape. You can linger in one of the western corners forever, but you can’t get out by entering “T@” from the north or south because you immediately get teleported. You have to cast “Jump” to get across it from the square in between the two planters–which is a perpetually spinning square. Half the time, your “Jump” won’t work because it will try to send you in the direction of a planter, one quarter of the time it will put you back in the doorway to the east, and the final quarter it will actually get you out of the room. You only have to somehow survive three fireball squares to make it in the first place. I couldn’t do it with all my characters alive. Maybe if I’d grinded more. I had to reload from outside the dungeon.                 

The whole purpose of the Halls of Rage was simply to find the stairway out. Once I’d achieved that, Bronakh again appeared and said “now let me see what you can do in my lair” and automatically transported us to his lair in the middle of a volcano, with no option to return to town to level up or anything.

            Miscellaneous notes, many dealing with bugs:

         I am particularly grateful for the ability to fly as a bat because it was getting increasingly hard to get anywhere on the overworld. You can’t just move smoothly across the map. The party gets hung up on all kinds of obstacles that you can’t even see.

The game weirdly divorces the overland features from the dungeons you have to find. For instance, I had to find the dungeon beneath the Tower of Scions. The tower is a feature on the map, but if you walk directly to the tower, you just get the “town menu” but with no menu options. You have to root around in the scrub surrounding the tower before the game finally tells you that you’ve found the dungeon.

        The regular Tower of Scions menu offers no option to enter its dungeon.

Instead, you have to hunt around its periphery until you get this.

            The game deletes unused keys from the previous dungeon when you enter a new dungeon, thus saving you from bulking up your inventory with extra keys that you’re too afraid to throw away.

In an early entry I said that the “combat waltz” was impossible because “enemies are always facing you.” This turns out not to be true. You can approach enemies from the side and rear. The waltz still doesn’t work though, for reasons having to do with the fact that there are actually four “positions” in each square, and you can only hit enemies if they’re in the two positions adjacent to you, which do require them to be facing you.

There’s an occasional bug in shops where accidentally clicking off the menu takes you to a blank screen. At this point, you can’t do anything and have to kill the game.

            I hope I saved recently.

           I’ve been avoiding the “Terror” spell because I don’t see any purpose in sending enemies running off for other parts of the dungeon, where I’ll just have to fight them again. However, I accidentally cast it (I was going for “Toxic Cloud” below it) on a dwarf. It somehow turned him invincible. Once it wore off, I was unable to hurt or even hit him with melee attacks or spells. I had to reload an earlier save.

In treasure chests, I found several suits of robes that told me they were the “wrong armor for this class” no matter what character I tried to equip with them.

A couple of times in the Halls of Death, my lead two warriors froze and refused to do anything when I clicked on their weapons. Both times were fighting ghosts. I don’t know if the game glitched or if ghosts have some kind of paralysis or terror effect. There’s nothing in the character sheet that tells you what kinds of conditions you’re under, and up until then (other than hunger), there hadn’t been any conditions.

         I have mixed feelings as I move forward towards the end. One the one hand, I’m glad I played Abandoned Places long enough to find out that the creators were capable of some Ördög-level cruelty. On the other hand, that was a lot of boring sludge to make me wade through to get to the good stuff. I don’t know if I hope that Bronakh’s fortress continues in the vein of the Halls of Rage or if it offers a quicker wrap-up.
