If I had a nickel for every time there was a same-sex canonically incestuous relationship between two identical/near identical siblings in an unusual sci-fi fantasy novel series featuring themes of imperialism and co-dependence, and one of those sibling's greatest desire was to be used as a weapon by the other one, and resultantly gets extremely upset at the other's reluctance to use them in that way even if it would result in their death, I'd have two nickels

Only one of Khiruev's subordinates, Lieutenant Colonel Kel Brezan, seems to be able to resist the influence of the brilliant but psychotic Jedao. Jedao claims to be interested in defending the hexarchate, but can Khiruev or Brezan trust him? For that matter, will the hexarchate's masters wipe out the entire fleet to destroy the rogue general?

Maybe this is reading too deep but I love the difference between how Khiruev and Cheris, both in charge of troops, remember their casualties.

Khiruev, known for mechanical engineering and tinkering, confides in Brezan that she hopes never to forget that it’s real people who are sent out to die. Cheris, ever the maths and numbers specialist, notes down the numbers of the injured and fallen from each battle she takes part in and commits them to memory.
