Summary
A beautiful forest. A terrifying legend.
It’s 1986. Two strangers, hundreds of miles apart, grapple with disturbing incidents in a one-of-a-kind quaking aspen forest.
Knox is a new Forest Service ranger assigned to a vast, remote territory in Utah.
Sandy is a producer fighting for her place in a tough TV newsroom.
Both have heard about the shadowy figure believed to menace visitors to the forest. When a man disappears and reports of the Root Witch begin coming in, Knox and Sandy are plunged into a living nightmare.
Their lives converge on Halloween. Sandy sends a news crew to investigate the sightings. But when the team goes missing, and a shocking video surfaces revealing the ghastly truth, Knox and Sandy face the biggest decision of their lives.

Favourite Part
To be honest, my favourite part was the forest. I love the way the author describes it. I am a sucker for forests and natural settings, especially in spooky/horror stories. There is so much you can play with, like all the senses. The author does a great job using all the senses in this book. She did a wonderful job setting everything up for the big reveal of the Root Witch.
Honestly, it totally gives me Blair Witch vibes, which is actually why I picked it up in the first place. I love urban legends and folk tales so much. This is a very unique story, though.
Least Favourite Part
Oh jeez, Colleen is definitely my least favourite part of this book. I hate her character. I don't know if the author intended for her to be as terrible as she was, but man. I can't stand her. She just beats her husband, Knox, down for everything he does.
Recommendation
I definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys spooky stories and/or urban legends, and natural settings.

Final Notes
This book wasn't as SCARY as I wanted, but that doesn't mean it didn't send shivers down my spine or make my pulse speed up. It definitely had its thrills and suspense. Keeping the Root Witch an unknown and building up to the reveal was definitely the way to go, though.

Okay, so I have an honest question for you. :) Despite really enjoying quite a few things about OUAT, I've never really understood the appeal of Rumbelle. What draws you in to that particular ship? I would truly like to know, just out of intellectual curiosity. Thank you in advance for any insight, philosophical musings, squeeing, etc. :)
I want to say up front, that I both love and hate that you asked this question. I love it b/c I think it’s awesome when fans reach across the fandom divide  and show genuine interest in others’ passions, even if they don’t share them. I hate it b/c I have a feeling I’m going to ramble for ages, and still not answer your question. I mean, think about it… if someone asked you why you ship Klaine, could you give a logical answer to that query?
Someone else asked a similar question a while back (not of me specifically, but Rumbellers in general). I answered in this post and in the end, summarized my answer with, “I ship Rumbelle because they resonate at my frequency.” I’m tempted to leave it at that, as nonsensical as that answer is, b/c really, how can any of us explain why we ship the couples we do? It’s not an exact science, you can’t plot it on a graph.
Tumblr media
(That gif was the closest I could find… everyone remembers the scene, right?)
All that said, you extended an open invitation for me to ramble about my other OTP, so buckle in.
(Under the cut for length, b/c as predicted, I rambled. Also, if anyone else wants to respond to this, @klaineharmony already said they welcome other responses, but they’ve only watched up to the Underworld arc in s5, so please don’t mention any plot points after that.)
My interest in Rumbelle started with Belle. I suspect that for many Rumbellers, it started with Rumplestiltskin, who was already an established character before Belle appeared. And I enjoy Rumplestiltskin too. He’s one of the most complex characters I’ve ever watched in a TV series, with so many layers to him. He’s Rumplestiltskin, but he’s also Belle’s beast, and Hook’s crocodile, and Cinderella’s fairy godmother, and probably others that I’m forgetting. He’s Rumple, Mr. Gold, the Dark One, and another persona that you haven’t even met yet. I’m fascinated by Rumplestiltskin…
…but I love Belle. She’s been my favorite Disney Princess since the animated movie in 1991; she’s MY Disney Princess, the one I relate to the most. An intelligent, slightly odd bookworm who grows up in a small town and dreams of adventure in the great wide somewhere? Believe me, I relate to her more than any living person should identify with an animated character.
Tumblr media
So yeah, I already loved Belle the animated character, when I was bingeing OUaT late at night, letting one episode after another play automatically, and I was sick so I was doped up on cold meds, when “Skin Deep” started to play. Someone said Belle’s name and I sat up straight from the half-doze I was in. “Whoa, Belle? That Belle?” Believe me, I was wide awake for the rest of “Skin Deep” which may be one of the single best hours of television I’ve ever seen. I loved Belle’s bravery in volunteering herself for an unknown future as the Dark One’s servant, in order to save her people from the ogres. I loved the Beauty and the Beast references, with Rumple as the beast, Belle’s gold dress, Gaston, the rose, and the chipped cup.
Tumblr media
I loved watching their relationship for the rest of SD, as these two people who’d both been so lonely and isolated in their own ways, and so seldom understood by others, came to understand each other. Watching them fall in love was like the purest form of magic, prompting the feeling that if these two oddballs can find their match, then we all can.
Also, the chemistry between Robert Carlyle and Emilie de Ravin is amazing. You may not agree, b/c I think that’s the sort of thing that you either see, or you don’t. To me, they have a rapport when they’re on screen together, that can’t be faked. It’s lightening in a bottle, and Rumbelle wouldn’t have been the same with any other two actors playing the roles.
I’m not sure how much you remember of “Skin Deep,” which is THE episode for Rumbellers, the one that started it all, but it turns angsty before it’s over. Belle gives Rumple True Love’s kiss and almost breaks his Dark One curse, but he reacts with anger and fear, convinced that Belle is working for the Evil Queen and trying to take his power. He’s so certain that no one could love him for himself, so he kicks Belle out of the Dark Castle. She goes, but not before giving the Dark One a piece of her mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were freeing yourself! You could have had happiness, if you just believed that someone could want you!
This scene is the first example of a Rumbelle dynamic that so many of its fans love… here’s this scary-powerful magician, whose name inspires fear and could kill someone with a wave of his hand… and here’s this 5′2″ bookworm who’s not intimidated, and always stands up to him.
OMG, I’ve already been rambling forever, and I’m not even done, so I’m gonna try to speed this up a bit.
So, you’ve watched OUaT up to somewhere in s5. You know that Rumplestiltskin and Belle were reunited in Storybrooke, and that they had a LOT of ups and downs in their relationship over the following seasons. I’m not gonna lie, there were times during the ‘downs’ of their relationship that it became difficult to justify to anti-Rumbelle segments of OUaT fandom, why Rumbelle shouldn’t be labeled as an abusive relationship.
During those dark times, Rumbelle fandom consoled itself by always going back to this:
Tumblr media
We knew there was a strong foundation of love for their relationship. We knew that these two lonely souls had found each other and weren’t going to give up their love without a fight. No matter how much Rumple’s curse tried to manipulate him into doing awful things – and sometimes he did – he loved Belle more than his own life. No matter how angry Belle got with him sometimes, and how many times she stormed out of their relationship, she always came back. And in her heart, she never lost faith in his ability to be a good man.
Rumbelle’s love lasted through their Dark Castle days, to Storybrooke where he was Mr. Gold, through separations, memory loss, and Belle being cursed to believe she was a ‘scantily clad barfly named Lacey.’ It lasted through fights, broken trust, break-ups, reconciliations, and even death, when Rumple came back after dying in 3x11. These two lonely, insecure people found each other, and although their relationship was far from perfect, I never stopped believing that they shared True Love.
We live in a cynical world, where many people would scoff at the fairytale notion of True Love. It’s a balm to my soul, wounded by the harshness of the world, to disappear into Rumbelle’s story and know that, as messy as it was, they made me believe in True Love.
As predicted, I wrote a novella and I’m still not sure I answered your original question. So here’s a TL;DR: how can you not ship a couple that gives you romantic scenes like this?

If you’ve known me for longer than a day, you know my favorite TV show is Lost. And while the networks have tried for years to copy the best show of all time, most of their efforts have crashed and burned (no pun intended). There just hasn’t been a show that captures my imagination the way Lost did, and I would take any opportunity to go back and visit the Island once again.
Destiny came calling in the form of “We Have To Go Back: The LOST Concert 2018.” They had an event like this two years ago, but I decided not to go for money reasons. After seeing pics and articles, I regretted not being there. How could a major Lost fan like me not attend such an event? It’s tailor-made for me. Thank God they decided to get the band back together again!
As I walked through the gate, sporting my new Lost t-shirts, I heard the Smoke Monster roaring in the trees. I had a quick snack, checked out the merch table, then headed inside. My girl knows me well, so she surprised me by getting us two perfect seats months ahead of the show. The icing on the cake: I was sitting in Seat #108. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll understand the significance of that number.
We were sure to get there early for the Q&A with composer Michael Giacchino and showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, or as Losties call them, Darlton. These guys are basically my writing heroes. As I try to make the transition from post production to writing, I soak up all the knowledge I can from the people who wrote my favorite things. I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to or watched every interview that Damon and Carlton have given.
I debated if I should ask them a question as a line formed at the mic. I had a question in mind, so my girl convinced me to go up (I had already tested this question at a Comic-Con fan panel a couple months earlier). Unfortunately, the last question they took was from the person right in front of me, so that will teach me not to hesitate again. People were asking a lot of dumb questions, either stuff I already knew the answers to, or just hogging the mic. Still, I had the advantage of watching the whole Q&A very close to the stage. And when special guests started coming out, I was able to get some great shots.
Tumblr media
One by one, cast members entered and took a seat: Josh Holloway (Sawyer, one of my favorites on the show), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin), Rebecca Mader (Charlotte), Andrea Gabriel (Nadia), and Emile de Ravin (Claire, actually pregnant like her character in the pilot). This was a completely different crew from the PaleyFest panel I witnessed four years ago. You never know who’s gonna show up to these things!
After a brief break, the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra took the stage, their instruments swelling together in that familiar tone. Then Michael Giacchino came back out, and the show began. At the very beginning. Suddenly, we flashed back in time, fourteen years ago. The opening scene of Lost was projected on the screens, while Michael conducted the orchestra through the music of the pilot.
Tumblr media
Over the next three hours, the orchestra played many of the most recognizable pieces from the show. Themes of love and loss, adventure and mystery, action and suspense. The absolute highlight for me was “Parting Words” which was played along with the Raft Launch scene from the end of Season One. I’m not an outwardly emotional guy, but I always tear up during that scene. I’ve always told people, if I can just write one scene as good as that, my writing career will be a success.
Of course, that scene has almost no dialogue, so the scripting wasn’t even the most important part. It was the music that made it something truly special. Damon and Carlton both cried when they heard that piece for the first time. They also talked about the advantages of having Michael compose for Lost. His music was so iconic eventually they would just write his name into the script.
To explain, Emile de Ravin read us a scene from the Season Three Finale “Through The Looking Glass.” An explosion goes off in the underwater hatch, which is now filling with water. Charlie is about to die a hero’s death. “…And Giacchino starts to play…” The other cast members read excerpts from the show as well, a nice supplement to the orchestral score.
The concert wrapped up with music from the emotional final scene of Lost. We watched all our favorite characters embrace each other in the church. The plane took off from the Island successfully. Jack closed his eye for the last time, and it was over. Except for a couple bonuses: a track that was almost cut for time, and a never-before-heard piece from Michael’s brand new movie Bad Times at the El Royale.
After the applause, we rushed the stage to get a good position for pictures and autographs. I was able to score autographs from several of the cast members, as well as Michael and Damon. I nervously told Damon what an inspiration he’s been to me over the years. He was very gracious with his time and made sure we got a decent photo. Here’s proof:
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the crowd was too thick, so I didn’t make it to Carlton in time. Oh well, I’ll get him at the next concert. Here we are with Michael. Just look at those smiles!
Tumblr media
I can definitely say this night is one of my top ten favorite experiences. It made me want to go home and binge all my Lost DVDs for the millionth time. It also sparked my creative imagination, and I’ve been on a roll with my writing. How can we ever top this concert? I guess we’ll just have to fly to Hawaii and put our feet in the sand where this all started!
Tumblr media
I leave you with the beautiful Raft Launch…

We have to go back! I recap one of my top ten favorite experiences of all time... Date: September 15, 2018  8pm Location: Ford Theatres, Los Angeles, CA If you've known me for longer than a day, you know my favorite TV show is Lost.
