⚔ An immortal is dead and you're holding the murder weapon. ⚔
Sunset Phoenix is an action/mystery comic about an immortal kingpin and her criminal spy who were framed for the murder of a rival, and are trying to find the real killer before time runs out and the city succumbs to war.
Also I made it and worked hard on it and I think you should check it out because it's cool :)

No one will probably read this, but as a long-time fan of ATLA (as in, I literally watched the show as it aired in 2005-2008), I wanted to share my thoughts on the live action. Let it be known that I am far from an ATLA purist––the original certainly had its own flaws and aspects that didn't age well, in retrospect. Despite the generally negative reviews I've seen from the fandom, I was actually very satisfied with this adaptation! But I’ve seen people saying that the characters were butchered, that it’s a soulless and superficial reproduction, and those who liked the live action aren’t capable of thinking/watching critically, which I wanted to push back against (I mean, I’m working on a doctorate in literature…I am quite literally incapable of watching anything uncritically).
The shift in tone to a darker, more mature one was a positive change, imo. It is definitely a much angrier show than the original, even if some of the characters were not as fiery as they should have been (*cough* Katara *cough*). Overall, while there were certainly decisions made that I didn't agree with (mainly related to pacing and narrative), I thought the cast and crew really captured the spirit of the original, and even added depth and nuance to parts I felt were initially lacking.
In general, I really appreciated the added emphasis on the cost and suffering of war and imperialism, as well as the depiction of the physical effects of bending. Now, I realize this is largely a matter of personal preference––for example, I'm very interested in depictions of war in fiction (I mean, my dissertation partially covers the impact of WWI on avant-garde art & literature, so...). But I've seen several claims that the live action glorifies war and violence in a way that is meant to traumatize the viewer, and I simply don't think that's true? While the original handled war, genocide, trauma, etc. in a phenomenal way for a kid's show in the early 2000s, it was also still sanitized when it comes to death and injury, to an extent that I feel like we, the viewers, almost lose sight of the fact that bending KILLS. Sure, we were exposed to its after effects, like the death of Katara and Sokka's mother or Zuko's scar, but there's something to be said actually seeing and acknowledging the very palpable danger that something like firebending presents.
I've even seen someone say that the show's depiction of "gratuitous violence" constitutes a "profound misunderstanding" of the source text, which I think is frankly a bad faith take. The death and violence, though more realistic, is still not a major focus of the show, nor is it glorified in any way. A glorification of violence would look like indiscriminate killing and maiming for the sake of edginess (looking at you GOT). We would see graphic depictions of death and injuries, which simply does not happen in this show (they even joke about the fact that we never see anyone die in Ember Island Players). War and fighting are still treated with the same depth and gravity as the original, only this time, the severity of its consequences isn't obscured from the viewer.
I also thought the show's handling of trauma (especially Katara's) was excellent. The choice to have Katara's mom's death revealed in flashbacks (specifically when around firebending) was something that really stood out to me. And the new characterization of Bumi, which I realize was quite unpopular, was another change I quite appreciated. His bitterness and cynicism seemed more in-line with someone who had endured 100 years of war and the suffering of his people at the hands of a brutal imperial force. Lastly, I was pleased to see the narrative attempt to address the role Iroh played in the Siege of Ba Sing Se (something that was absolutely missing from the original). The Earth Kingdom soldier confronting him and calling him a butcher was a powerful moment, for me. I truly hope the show continues to dive into this aspect of his character in future seasons.
Speaking of characters, I loved that we got extra background and insight into several of the characters. Zhao, for example, was unexpectedly quite funny, and his actor really did a phenomenal job of fleshing him out and making him feel like a real person (as slimy and smarmy as he was) rather than a stock, cartoon villain. And I have to give kudos to the actors who played Sokka and Zuko––they both did an incredible job of embodying their respective characters, in a way that felt highly reminiscent of the original. In particular, I thought the handling of Zuko's backstory was truly outstanding––perhaps even better than the original.
All in all, I felt the live action did a really nice job of balancing the darker sides with the light. While I've seen fans complaining that the show doesn't have the same goofiness and lightheartedness, I actually thought the humor worked really well––it was one of the few times I felt the overly ironic, Joss Whedonesque one-liners actually fit. Sure, the humor was a lot drier and more toned down than the original, but I nonetheless thought it carried the show's spirit well (loved that they let Sokka say “ass” not once, but twice). There were moments when I genuinely laughed out loud! I also appreciated how, despite the more mature tone, hope, friendship, and harmony still remained the most important aspect at the end of each episode.
There's a lot of room for improvement, but I was overall very satisfied with the live action, and I'm very glad that the series has been renewed. I'm very excited to see what the cast and crew does with the rest of the show!

I just read “Loveless” by Alice Oseman as someone who’s aroace and I am. Struggling.
I was expecting to love the book and I’m so, so happy to see aromanticism/asexuality in the public eye, but as far as the story/characters went I was really struggling. Maybe I’m too old for it but I found it… very lackluster. The characters felt deeply one-dimensional and I did not like the protagonist at all.
If any of you have read this book and really enjoyed the characters, I would love to hear more about it. Maybe I’m just missing something. But also if any of you have recommendations for LGBTQA+ media with engaging characters and an engaging story I would love some recommendations.
I also just watched Nimona for the first time and I absolutely adored it. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone.

Question! If I ordered a few things from your Etsy, is there some sort of way to combine shipping to make it more convenient from you? I have never bought from Etsy before and am just sort of unsure of how it works, I am from Texas so the shipping shouldn't be difficult from that standpoint, only one state over.
you mean like shipping multiple orders together? bc if someone orders more than once in a short period of time, yes! I'll normally do that myself though, you don't have to ask me to combine shipping- tho sometimes people will leave a note on the order (it's very easy for me to see things written in the "note to seller" field) and that also helps me not to miss it!

Tales of Shadybug and Claw Noir quick review (SPOILERS)
I have very mixed opinions on this special, mostly negative.
As always I personally think there are several writing issues. First of all, the fact that most of the pre-established lore rules, at least what little they did enstablish, were ignored for moving the plot forward in this special and for giving the vibe of "bad guys", probably justifying it with the multiverse. If the only difference was supposed to be in the roles of protagonist and antagonist, then not so many things should change, like the weapon and their purpose. Furthermore, I find it absurd that the issue of the 5 minute limit is actually being explained to us for the first time after 5 seasons, clearly invented on the spot. There are a lot of things where we're told we should know, but in truth nothing was said before in the series. I feel like the multiverse is not something we HAD to learn about before, but the consequences of breaking the 5 minute rule? Yeah.
A lot of use of the shock value without really enstablishing what will make it shocking and touching eventually.
We also see very little about the alternate world. Marinette basically chooses that route because it's assumed that Alya didn't sit next to her at the beginning of the year (it's apparently also said in the novel that she became an orphan, but that's not explained or shown here). Adrien instead, because his mother died and he wants to bring her back (Although it is clearly stated before in the special that he didn't know about the Wish before coming to that universe). While also it's interesting to see the roles swapped, seen how it was treated in the main series, I don't quite like that it's implied that one of the Agreste family would necessarily be a toxic figure (as we don't see other usiverses being both positive figures), especially if in that case Gabriel was caring and capable of going through mourning.
The basic idea of the special was interesting, but I don't quite enjoy how it was handled...
This deserved more space and more insight on the other world, to help us empathize with characters that Thomas wanted us to cry with. There are scenes that would be very nice, but it needed better bases in my opinion. The only thing I promote is the storyboard of certain scenes and the soundtrack.
I also enjoyed Giulia Andrada and I think Kanae Kondo? (It seems her art)
Ah, the final "reformed" Ladybug costume is better than both of the original in my opinion XD

Honestly I always mostly just think of the [looks at notes] 3 managers Harry was friends with when thinking of what he lost but considering he's that old and has been jumping between franchises so much and also the fact Every Fucking Phoney (save for 3) got scrapped by the time we meet him; how much as this man lost? How many people he cared about has he seen die gruesome deaths again and again? Has he managed to find time to process this to grieve or has he just desensitized himself to the situation entirely? I wonder if some vague memory or reaction from how he dealt w this while in the war is how he keeps it at bay. Though it's rich of me to take his formality at face value when he has shown to not be a stranger to strong emotional reactions. Much to think about!

Pocahontas/John Smith Fic Rec List
In light of my recent inability to be chill at all about this ship or the movie, I've put together a fic rec list for the perusal of anyone wanting to dip in the waters with me.
I generally kept to one fic per author, but quite a few of these writers have some impressive catalogues of fic; and although I picked one personal fave per author for this list, there are a TON of excellent picks on these authors' pages, so please, please check them out!
[ big thanks to @revangerang for being the lead witness to me absolutely losing it for the past, like, 2 weeks. ]
One Shots:
The Royal Progress by babyb26 [ ff.net | Ao3 ]
When Pocahontas tries to escape the love triangle between her head and her heart by traveling with the king and queen on their royal progress. What could go wrong? What happens when a mysterious stranger claims her as his Queen of Love and Beauty? Can one dance alter a seemingly unhappy future? A wee bit supernatural. Dedicated to SunRise19 and HC247 Rating T-M
Tags: Romance/Supernatural, Solstice/Midsummer, Ritual Sex, Tarot, Love Confessions, Court of King James I Rating: M Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 12,871 Published/Updated: 12/25/2019
Notes: I love me some supernatural elements, and this one-shot is a nice change of pace for this ship, since it focuses on bringing in old spiritual practices of the Isles. This author has a much broader catalogue of fic, so be sure to check out their page!
---
When Hearts Meet by WishingDreamer5 [ ff.net ]
The moment he locked eyes with her, John Smith was utterly lost.
Tags: Romance Rating: T Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 324 Published/Updated: 8/11/2015
Notes: Just a short, sweet little one-shot. <3
---
Deleted Scene by fokkusu94 [ ff.net ]
You know how John Smith never tells Pocahontas that he loves her in the movie? Well, for whatever reason, the writers left it out. This is that scene.
Tags: Romance Rating: K+ Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 1,473 Published/Updated: 1/24/2014
Notes: What is says on the tin; fluffy and sweet!
---
Light My Candle by HC247 [ ff.net ]
Pocahontas and John run into a bit of trouble on their wedding night. Fun, fluffy, romance. For Sunrise.
Tags: Romance/Humor Rating: T Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 936 Published/Updated: 12/27/2009
Notes: HC247 is another author with a massive selection of fic to choose from, so it was hard to single one out. This was probably the first one of theirs I read, and it's still a favorite I like to revisit.
---
Sweet Sorrow by guardyanangel [ ff.net ]
"What pain? I've had worse pain than this." It was somewhat truthful. What was worse than the pain from his physical injury was the emotional agony he felt knowing he'd have to leave her. Nonetheless… "I just can't think of any right now." JS/P Oneshot
Tags: Romance/Angst Rating: K+ Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 1,503 Published/Updated: 10/8/2010
Notes: Hope you like pain. I do. ಥ_ಥ
---
Dream Giver by EnInkahootz [ Ao3 ]
After the events of Pocahontas, John Smith and Pocahontas reunite in a dream.
Tags: Romance, Ficlet, Dreams Rating: T Chapters: 1/1 Word Count: 665 Published/Updated: 3/3/2020
Notes: Another bit of wistful fluff <3
Completed Chapter Fics:
The Path to You by Cherriepixie27 [ff.net | Ao3]
This is a fix-it fic in which Pocahontas and John Smith end up together. Ignoring the end of Journey to a New World because I will go down with this ship. Lots of angst and eventual smut, hence the M rating!
Tags: Romance/Angst Rating: E Chapters: 2/2 Word Count: 6,931 Published/Updated: 7/20/2021-9/9/2022
Notes: I love the characterization in this fic. It's got a great balance of angst and yearning and romance. Just two people, finally finding each other again.
---
Shadows Cast by doodlegirll [ ff.net | Ao3 ]
What if, at the Hunt Ball, instead of a bear baiting, there was a prisoner? ..:Dedicated to my friend Kayla:..
Tags: Romance/Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Whipping [John Smith Whump], Angst with a Happy Ending, Racism/Racist Language, etc. Rating: T Chapters: 13/13 Word Count: 39,103 Published/Updated: 7/10/2013-1/12/2023
Notes: doodlegirll is another one with a collection of fic. She goes back quite a ways, and she's experimented with a lot of different styles over the years! This re-vamp of the non-canon sequel is more recent and action-focused. I have an affinity for it in particular bc I love me some whump ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
---
Battlefield by SunRise19 [ ff.net ]
After Pocahontas II. It is often said you can't have life both ways, no matter how you wish it so. No one expects a battle of inner desires and words to be started during a ball. When the lines are drawn, can one foolish act be enough to make peace? PLZ RR! For HC247…COMPLETE
Tags: Romance/Drama Rating: T Chapters: 3/3 Word Count: 11,000 Published/Updated: 10/1/2018-1/1/2019
Notes: fCUk the writing in this one is so good! I'm a little [a lot] obsessed with the way John is written in particular. And SunRise has a TON more fic; there's a little something for everyone on their page, so be sure to check it out!
---
Painting with the wind by Psyche Blue [ ff.net ]
A series of one shots following the second film, exploring the lives of John Smith and Pocahontas. Like the film, it is loosely based on historical events.
Tags: Romance/Angst Rating: T Chapters: 42/42 Word Count: 20,379 Published/Updated: 2/14/2013-3/3/2013
Notes: *deep breath* aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *deep breath* When they say angst they Mean It, but it's WORTH it. The story is intense and so beautifully written, I can't recommend this one enough (although, if you need a happy ending for P/JS...you can always stop a chapter short of the end and Pretend :'D)
---
Meeting His Match by RhapsodyinB [ ff.net ]
John enjoys being a carefree bachelor until someone causes him to rethink his lifestyle. His version of the classic.
Tags: Romance Rating: T Chapters: 2/2 Word Count: 4,897 Published/Updated: 11/21/2012-11/28/2012
Notes: As the summary implies, this is a John-centric lil character study. A heartstring-tugger, with a dash of canon-divergence.
---
Choosing Her Own Path by Lahiwe [ ff.net ]
Pocahontas never thought she'd be able to listen like her mother had. The gift of understanding was just that, and it hadn't been given to her. But when she meets a man from across the sea, she learns that the gift is more a part of her than she knows.
Tags: Romance/Adventure Rating: T Chapters: 9/9 Word Count: 13,294 Published/Updated: 1/2/2012
and,
The Collected Writings of Captain John Smith by Lahiwe[ ff.net ]
It's been a while since Thomas Ryan has had anything to do with the New World. Still, memories of it have never left him. Five years after his return to England, however, he receives a strange parcel and a letter from none other than his old friend, John Smith. Read the story of Pocahontas from Captain Smith's perspective-perhaps you'll learn things you never knew you never knew.
Tags: Romance/Adventure Rating: T Chapters: 10/10 Word Count: 32,124 Published/Updated: 6/9/2012-12/31/2014
Notes: I included these two fics together because they're really a two-part series. They're both wonderful character-focused fics I just adore.
---
Disney's Pocahontas: an extended retelling by best obsessed [ ff.net ]
A retelling of Disney's Pocahontas, now complete. The idea is to see if a serious treatment of the whole story can work. Disclaimer: though some of the characters are my own, most were given their present form by the Disney Corporation.
Tags: Romance/Adventure Rating: T Chapters: 25/25 Word Count: 110,703 Published/Updated: 4/12/2009-5/29/2009
Notes: This is an EPIC and, if I were to pick, like, a 'Citizen Kane' of P/JS fic, it would be this one. Basically, it's an expansion on the world of the film, and reframes the story a little more realistically. It's got EVERYTHING. It's got a deep study of both leads, complex political maneuvering, John Smith's Pretty People Problems (obsessed with this), gay lil Thomas having a Lot to deal with, Pocahontas being smarter than everyone, and romanceeeeeee. *muah* c'e bella.
Incomplete Fics:
Glory to Glory by pearl037 [ ff.net | Ao3 ]
When John Smith returns to England, Pocahontas is left as the mediator between the settlers and her people. When a bad growing season forces them to cease trading, the new captain will stop at nothing to ensure the survival of his colony. Meanwhile, England prepares for war. Multi-perspective. All rights belong to Disney and history. Part XIII is up!
Tags: Adventure/Romance Rating: T Chapters: 14/? Word Count: 42,731 Published/Updated: 4/6/2019-6/22/2022
Notes: There's some wonderful characterization in this, and an excellent exploration of grief that just gets me in the gut. It's more-or-less an alternate sequel, and builds up the setting around both the denizens of Jamestown and John's gang of fugitives (queen behavior).
---
Burning Bright by typewriter33 [ ff.net ]
This is a continuation from a "Pocahontas" fanfiction 'The Burning' published in 1999. He had never dared hope to see her alive and laughing, vibrant and beautiful. T/M
Tags: None Rating: T Chapters: 5/? Word Count: 21,349 Published/Updated: 7/30/2020-7/2/2023
Notes: I'm not sure where the predecessor of this fic is (although I'll continue to try). It's a rare modern AU, with a twist. You can piece together what happened before the fic, and the intensity of the universe it happens in. To keep in line with the setting, Pocahontas has a different name, which can be jarring, but once you get past it the premise is interesting and the story, compelling.
Honorable Mention:
The Magic of Hogwarts by orphan_account [ Ao3 ]
"The wall clock reads fifteen minutes till eleven. The newspapers indicate that today is the first of September. King’s Cross Station is bustling... Here our fairytales begin." Excerpt from Prologue. Betaed by the lovely and amazing Crystal (niuniujiaojiao). Please read the notes at the beginning of this fic. I will eventually update.
Tags: Disney/Harry Potter Universe Crossover, Modern Setting, Mentions of Underage Sexuality [see Author's Notes abt this], More Tags to be had Rating: T Chapters: 21/27 Word Count: 112,028 Published/Updated: 4/11/2016-1/10/2020
Notes: I didn't include any crossovers in the main list, because I hadn't really broken into that set of fic, yet. But I felt this one deserved a spot on the list. It's a wide, wide fic, and includes interpretations of a TON of Disney characters. I included this because the Pocahontas/John Smith subplot absolutely fucking wrecked me, and I needed to share. The last update the fic got threw me in the back of a van and beat me with an aluminum baseball bat. This fic is unfinished as of now, but even if it's never updated again, it's worth a read. Just be sure to read all of the author's notes!

I lost all hope or trust for the 2024 live action ATLA when I heard talk of things happening in like episode 2 that originally took place in like ep 5 of the og show.
Any and all plot and character changes aside. The og atla, although having the old 20 ep season standard, is a decently fast-paced show. They literally go from the south poll to the North poll + detours in those 20 episodes.
I can't find it in me to believe that anyone could do any sort of justice to a story previously comprised of 20 distinct episodes in only 8 episodes.
I don't care that those episodes are, for some reason, the length of an overachieving short film (52mins)
I lose faith in something as soon as you start compressing storylines just for the sake of compressing things.

Most shift of my life just happened. What if. Literally day one. You were told you will never ever get a positive shiga. Don’t even worry about the procedure because it will never happen. And tonight. After your supervisor went home. It happen. And you text him to ask what to do and he says idk look at the procedure. Procedure says call the health department IMMEDIATELY. this is not a 2 day notice or 24 hour notice this is IMMEDIATE as soon as you see it call. You have never called the health department before. You ask your supervisor if they need anything special (you are thinking some code your lab is registered or accredited under nationally that you do not know) he says. Idk check the clipboard that’s taped to the back of the micro hood. You spend ten minutes scrounging around the micro department for a clipboard anywhere (nowhere) on the back of a hood (all empty). This is because when you find it it’s a red binder in a book shelf. TASK PREREQUISITES NOW COMPLETE!
You call the number listed for the health department. Get sent to voicemail. You legally cannot leave a voicemail and HAVE to speak to a real live person to report this kind of bacteria. For After Hours Immediate Sensitivity Reporting Press Zero. Press zero. Robot says. Goodbye. Immediately hangs up on me. Get really confused. Call again. Robot voice. Goodbye. Really scrutinize the health department infographic. Find a different (after hours specific!) number. Call. No dial tone at ALL. no voicemail explaining everything. Just. Robot voice. Goodbye. Find ANOTHER number that by the looks of the call log is what people usually get in touch with. Whew. For After Hours Immediate Sensitivity Reporting Press Zero. 0? Goodbye. Google Redacted Health Departmnet. Call the office number. Finalyyyyyyyyyyy get an extension that works that is listed absolutely nowhere in any work documents. Guy I talk to says oh huh that shouldn’t happen. Didn’t know it was happening. I’ll have to call IT to look into this. Doesn’t matter to me! TASK 1/2 COMPLETE!
Now I have to call the doctor. Thank god we have a phone number for him! On a soreadsheet even! Hello. You’ve reached our office out of hours. FUCK! To speak with the on call for DOCTOR SO AND SO call X. Okay fine. Call X. Hi I’m calling about doctor so and so’s patient and oh my god I’m so sorry I need to put you on hold because the health department is on the other line. Get health departmnet shit straightened out. Get back on the line. The most annoyed woman you’ve ever spoken to answers. I’m the on call doctor. Great thanks sorry for the hold I’m calling about doctor so and so’s patient. Well he’s not in our office anymore. Ummm. Okay. I called his office which gave me the call center number which forwarded me to you. So. Most annoyed sigh in the world. I’ll take the result but here’s his cell phone number don’t call me again. OK! TASK DONE! Except. Since i had to call the health department about it I have to call them again to let them know that I have not actually spoken to the actual doctor. I have a whack ass slide review and whack ass UA and failed QC I need to troubleshoot and an Hbsag confirmation panel I need to set up by hand all waiting for me to get done with this fucking emergancy btw. And it’s 10pm which is when I usually shut down for the night to be done by 11pm when I’m off. AND JUST WHEN you THINK ITS ALL OVER. Peach still down

oh yeah, fnaf movie thoughts
out of all the words i could use to describe it, i wasn't expecting the most prominent one for me to be "cute". but here we are! thank you jim henson's creature shop, i love you
i am. So Confused. is this an au? a retcon? neither, somehow? (probably just an au but you never know with fnaf tbh)
they sure did spend five nights at freddy's!
i was So caught off guard when the credits theme started playing and i mean that in the best way. so fucking cool
overall basically met my expectations: a good time even if it's confusing (probably not so confusing to people who aren't already familiar with the lore of the games though, but again it's most likely an au so whatever!)
