No one will probably read this, but as a long-time fan of ATLA (as in, I literally watched the show as it aired in 2005-2008), I wanted to share my thoughts on the live action. Let it be known that I am far from an ATLA purist––the original certainly had its own flaws and aspects that didn't age well, in retrospect. Despite the generally negative reviews I've seen from the fandom, I was actually very satisfied with this adaptation! But I’ve seen people saying that the characters were butchered, that it’s a soulless and superficial reproduction, and those who liked the live action aren’t capable of thinking/watching critically, which I wanted to push back against (I mean, I’m working on a doctorate in literature…I am quite literally incapable of watching anything uncritically).

The shift in tone to a darker, more mature one was a positive change, imo. It is definitely a much angrier show than the original, even if some of the characters were not as fiery as they should have been (*cough* Katara *cough*). Overall, while there were certainly decisions made that I didn't agree with (mainly related to pacing and narrative), I thought the cast and crew really captured the spirit of the original, and even added depth and nuance to parts I felt were initially lacking.

In general, I really appreciated the added emphasis on the cost and suffering of war and imperialism, as well as the depiction of the physical effects of bending. Now, I realize this is largely a matter of personal preference––for example, I'm very interested in depictions of war in fiction (I mean, my dissertation partially covers the impact of WWI on avant-garde art & literature, so...). But I've seen several claims that the live action glorifies war and violence in a way that is meant to traumatize the viewer, and I simply don't think that's true? While the original handled war, genocide, trauma, etc. in a phenomenal way for a kid's show in the early 2000s, it was also still sanitized when it comes to death and injury, to an extent that I feel like we, the viewers, almost lose sight of the fact that bending KILLS. Sure, we were exposed to its after effects, like the death of Katara and Sokka's mother or Zuko's scar, but there's something to be said actually seeing and acknowledging the very palpable danger that something like firebending presents.

I've even seen someone say that the show's depiction of "gratuitous violence" constitutes a "profound misunderstanding" of the source text, which I think is frankly a bad faith take. The death and violence, though more realistic, is still not a major focus of the show, nor is it glorified in any way. A glorification of violence would look like indiscriminate killing and maiming for the sake of edginess (looking at you GOT). We would see graphic depictions of death and injuries, which simply does not happen in this show (they even joke about the fact that we never see anyone die in Ember Island Players). War and fighting are still treated with the same depth and gravity as the original, only this time, the severity of its consequences isn't obscured from the viewer.

I also thought the show's handling of trauma (especially Katara's) was excellent. The choice to have Katara's mom's death revealed in flashbacks (specifically when around firebending) was something that really stood out to me. And the new characterization of Bumi, which I realize was quite unpopular, was another change I quite appreciated. His bitterness and cynicism seemed more in-line with someone who had endured 100 years of war and the suffering of his people at the hands of a brutal imperial force. Lastly, I was pleased to see the narrative attempt to address the role Iroh played in the Siege of Ba Sing Se (something that was absolutely missing from the original). The Earth Kingdom soldier confronting him and calling him a butcher was a powerful moment, for me. I truly hope the show continues to dive into this aspect of his character in future seasons.

Speaking of characters, I loved that we got extra background and insight into several of the characters. Zhao, for example, was unexpectedly quite funny, and his actor really did a phenomenal job of fleshing him out and making him feel like a real person (as slimy and smarmy as he was) rather than a stock, cartoon villain. And I have to give kudos to the actors who played Sokka and Zuko––they both did an incredible job of embodying their respective characters, in a way that felt highly reminiscent of the original. In particular, I thought the handling of Zuko's backstory was truly outstanding––perhaps even better than the original.

All in all, I felt the live action did a really nice job of balancing the darker sides with the light. While I've seen fans complaining that the show doesn't have the same goofiness and lightheartedness, I actually thought the humor worked really well––it was one of the few times I felt the overly ironic, Joss Whedonesque one-liners actually fit. Sure, the humor was a lot drier and more toned down than the original, but I nonetheless thought it carried the show's spirit well (loved that they let Sokka say “ass” not once, but twice). There were moments when I genuinely laughed out loud! I also appreciated how, despite the more mature tone, hope, friendship, and harmony still remained the most important aspect at the end of each episode.

There's a lot of room for improvement, but I was overall very satisfied with the live action, and I'm very glad that the series has been renewed. I'm very excited to see what the cast and crew does with the rest of the show!

I just read “Loveless” by Alice Oseman as someone who’s aroace and I am. Struggling.

I was expecting to love the book and I’m so, so happy to see aromanticism/asexuality in the public eye, but as far as the story/characters went I was really struggling. Maybe I’m too old for it but I found it… very lackluster. The characters felt deeply one-dimensional and I did not like the protagonist at all.

If any of you have read this book and really enjoyed the characters, I would love to hear more about it. Maybe I’m just missing something. But also if any of you have recommendations for LGBTQA+ media with engaging characters and an engaging story I would love some recommendations.

I also just watched Nimona for the first time and I absolutely adored it. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone.

Tales of Shadybug and Claw Noir quick review (SPOILERS)

I have very mixed opinions on this special, mostly negative.

As always I personally think there are several writing issues. First of all, the fact that most of the pre-established lore rules, at least what little they did enstablish, were ignored for moving the plot forward in this special and for giving the vibe of "bad guys", probably justifying it with the multiverse. If the only difference was supposed to be in the roles of protagonist and antagonist, then not so many things should change, like the weapon and their purpose. Furthermore, I find it absurd that the issue of the 5 minute limit is actually being explained to us for the first time after 5 seasons, clearly invented on the spot. There are a lot of things where we're told we should know, but in truth nothing was said before in the series. I feel like the multiverse is not something we HAD to learn about before, but the consequences of breaking the 5 minute rule? Yeah.

A lot of use of the shock value without really enstablishing what will make it shocking and touching eventually.

We also see very little about the alternate world. Marinette basically chooses that route because it's assumed that Alya didn't sit next to her at the beginning of the year (it's apparently also said in the novel that she became an orphan, but that's not explained or shown here). Adrien instead, because his mother died and he wants to bring her back (Although it is clearly stated before in the special that he didn't know about the Wish before coming to that universe). While also it's interesting to see the roles swapped, seen how it was treated in the main series, I don't quite like that it's implied that one of the Agreste family would necessarily be a toxic figure (as we don't see other usiverses being both positive figures), especially if in that case Gabriel was caring and capable of going through mourning.

The basic idea of the special was interesting, but I don't quite enjoy how it was handled...

This deserved more space and more insight on the other world, to help us empathize with characters that Thomas wanted us to cry with. There are scenes that would be very nice, but it needed better bases in my opinion. The only thing I promote is the storyboard of certain scenes and the soundtrack.

I also enjoyed Giulia Andrada and I think Kanae Kondo? (It seems her art)

Ah, the final "reformed" Ladybug costume is better than both of the original in my opinion XD

Honestly I always mostly just think of the [looks at notes] 3 managers Harry was friends with when thinking of what he lost but considering he's that old and has been jumping between franchises so much and also the fact Every Fucking Phoney (save for 3) got scrapped by the time we meet him; how much as this man lost? How many people he cared about has he seen die gruesome deaths again and again? Has he managed to find time to process this to grieve or has he just desensitized himself to the situation entirely? I wonder if some vague memory or reaction from how he dealt w this while in the war is how he keeps it at bay. Though it's rich of me to take his formality at face value when he has shown to not be a stranger to strong emotional reactions. Much to think about!

I lost all hope or trust for the 2024 live action ATLA when I heard talk of things happening in like episode 2 that originally took place in like ep 5 of the og show.

Any and all plot and character changes aside. The og atla, although having the old 20 ep season standard, is a decently fast-paced show. They literally go from the south poll to the North poll + detours in those 20 episodes.

I can't find it in me to believe that anyone could do any sort of justice to a story previously comprised of 20 distinct episodes in only 8 episodes.

I don't care that those episodes are, for some reason, the length of an overachieving short film (52mins)

I lose faith in something as soon as you start compressing storylines just for the sake of compressing things.

#ok so mini rant session #i am doing a bit better today - little less distraught over getting fired from a job i thought i was doing pretty good at and i was trying #really hard and genuinely enjoying #and just more baffled because truly i had no warning and i was completely blindsided #i was in the middle of a 3 month trial and i would have a review at the end in which i would be offered a permanent position if it went well #and i thought i was making my way towards that! granted i was still making mistakes but genuinely not of such a great scale i thought it #called for my immediate dismissal #that being said i was still VERY MUCH IN TRAINING. i had only been there A MONTH AND A HALF learning COMPLETELY NEW SYSTEMS #and i was told that i had been there a few weeks already and that i wasn’t catching on quick enough. that there were some areas i was #understanding and others i just simply wasn’t #and i asked what areas specifically so that i could learn more and try harder #and they didn’t give me a specific answer. #ok and so. so. i have this insecurity. #that at first impression people will like me. that they may think i’m pretty or kind or funny or whatever #but then they spend time with me or get to know me and realize that that’s all bullshit. #that i’m actually not pretty and im mean and loud and selfish and lazy and rude and etc etc etc #MASSIVE fucking insecurity in that like that’s why i genuinely don’t have friends or a significant other #and that genuinely i’m just a Bad Person #and when i was fired? i was told ‘a persons true colours show after a few weeks’ #so that’s MAJORLY fucking me up. #when i was hired i was boasted to about my boss’s hiring process and how she’s ’only been fooled twice’ #and the morning before i was fired in a meeting my supervisor told everyone that i was doing quite well. #so yeah i truly had no fucking warning. at fucking all. #hurt and confused and angry and baffled and did i mention hurt #anyways if you’re still here i’m sorry i know this is not a good look for me

omg i placed a jimmy johns order for the first time using their app and i got a "do you love our app" type popup and i like to be honest, i liked how the app worked compared to others so i clicked "yes" so it would prompt me to leave a review and instead the popup window just said "we love you too!" sobbing

#that was so unexpected but also delightful #most of the time review prompt popups really annoy me bc if im gonna leave a review im gonna leave it on my own terms #and im gonna be honest of course bc they can't improve if i just straight up lie #i only clicked yes on the prompt bc i actually do like how the app works so i figured i might as well write about it #and instead it just gave me a little positivity :) which i also enjoy :) #the local jimmy johns and dominos are like. the greatest #the stores are right next to each other and i think the employees compete on who's the best delivery place #and they always have INSANELY fast delivery like my dominos orders will still be STEAMING when it arrives #and if they're like. even Slightly late. they give you a coupon for your next order #all the drivers are super chill too they're the few delivery people I'm ok with Interacting With to get my food

Most shift of my life just happened. What if. Literally day one. You were told you will never ever get a positive shiga. Don’t even worry about the procedure because it will never happen. And tonight. After your supervisor went home. It happen. And you text him to ask what to do and he says idk look at the procedure. Procedure says call the health department IMMEDIATELY. this is not a 2 day notice or 24 hour notice this is IMMEDIATE as soon as you see it call. You have never called the health department before. You ask your supervisor if they need anything special (you are thinking some code your lab is registered or accredited under nationally that you do not know) he says. Idk check the clipboard that’s taped to the back of the micro hood. You spend ten minutes scrounging around the micro department for a clipboard anywhere (nowhere) on the back of a hood (all empty). This is because when you find it it’s a red binder in a book shelf. TASK PREREQUISITES NOW COMPLETE!

You call the number listed for the health department. Get sent to voicemail. You legally cannot leave a voicemail and HAVE to speak to a real live person to report this kind of bacteria. For After Hours Immediate Sensitivity Reporting Press Zero. Press zero. Robot says. Goodbye. Immediately hangs up on me. Get really confused. Call again. Robot voice. Goodbye. Really scrutinize the health department infographic. Find a different (after hours specific!) number. Call. No dial tone at ALL. no voicemail explaining everything. Just. Robot voice. Goodbye. Google Redacted Health Departmnet. Call the office number. Finalyyyyyyyyyyy get an extension that works that is listed absolutely nowhere in any work documents. Guy I talk to says oh huh that shouldn’t happen. Didn’t know it was happening. I’ll have to call IT to look into this. Doesn’t matter to me! TASK 1/2 COMPLETE!

Now I have to call the doctor. Thank god we have a phone number for him! On a soreadsheet even! Hello. You’ve reached our office out of hours. FUCK! To speak with the on call for DOCTOR SO AND SO call X. Okay fine. Call X. Hi I’m calling about doctor so and so’s patient and oh my god I’m so sorry I need to put you on hold because the health department is on the other line. Get health departmnet shit straightened out. Get back on the line. The most annoyed woman you’ve ever spoken to answers. I’m the on call doctor. Great thanks sorry for the hold I’m calling about doctor so and so’s patient. Well he’s not in our office anymore. Ummm. Okay. I called his office which gave me the call center number which forwarded me to you. So. Most annoyed sigh in the world. I’ll take the result but here’s his cell phone number don’t call me again. OK! TASK DONE! Except. Since i had to call the health department about it I have to call them again to let them know that I have not actually spoken to the actual doctor. I have a whack ass slide review and whack ass UA and failed QC I need to troubleshoot and an Hbsag confirmation panel I need to set up by hand all waiting for me to get done with this fucking emergancy btw. And it’s 10pm which is when I usually shut down for the night to be done by 11pm when I’m off. AND JUST WHEN you THINK ITS ALL OVER. Peach still down

#doctor who #doctor who spoilers #actual review is: thought the premise and character moments were what id been yearning for so much it was excellent BUT #they really lost me near the climax because all this atmospheric tension was resolved by telling telling telling explaining which didn't #feel satisfying or revelatory at all. and although i did say i don't care about the bad cgi i do mean the body horror elements i loved them #i laughed about them with my sister all part of a good dw experience we were crying at dt running on all fours like a dog #but i wasn't a fan at all of the main ship not because the design was bad i loved the changing environment but #it was soooo distracting to me that donna and the doctor just did not look like they were physically there #to the point that the really ridiculous body horror was more believable to me than the environment they were in #overall though this is what i wanted there were times i was so delighted and surprised by the show in a way i havent been for 15 years <3 #feeling sososo positive and excited for ncuti #sorry i turn into a dw blog on saturday nights now

#miles thots #someone convince me not to get this $150 packer #i don’t absolutely need it but like #i really really want it #it’s the coolest packer i’ve ever seen- it has removable parts inside and it comes with a harness AND adhesive part #and the fact that it has removable parts means it doesn’t have to be so noticeable from outside clothes #that and the harness is why i struggle to wear the one i have bc it moves so much #the reviews i’ve seen of this company are all positive and i think the only negative things i’ve seen about it is that the inside parts #didn’t match the outside (the color) and it tore easily #but both were resolved soon after the first review i saw of it #i’ve been going back to it all week but i cannot justify spending that much money on a dick #anyways!! #sorry for oversharing
