ok, i cant resist the urge to make a post about it after all, especially since it's related to a post i made prior

one of my favorite moments in trimax is By Far this part in chapter 35

[ID: Two pages from Trigun. The first starts with Wolfwood thinking, "Now that I think 'bout it, it may be one of the major differences between our species." That deep rooted dear I felt on the ship…" He thinks of Vash crying blood and, swearing, wonders, "Is he the one who can save humankind? That monster?" Wolfwood is briefly shown in resolution before someone calls, "Hey, Wolfwood!" and he looks up with surprise.

Vash sits with a smile at the edge of a rooftop, backed by the Fifth Moon and its prominent crater. Vash asks with a smile, "Just coming back now? You're a bit of a night owl, huh?" Wolfwood looks taken aback and wary. End ID]

Right Here. Vash is just sitting there, smiling like normal, but he's got the backdrop of the damage he caused on the moon set Perfectly behind him. it's a glaring reminder to Wolfwood of who exactly he's dealing with here, and that TERRIFIES him.

& the fact that Wolfwood still remembers that moment of crying blood as a moment of true fear. because for all the cheer Vash shows in the average moment, Wolfwood just recently saw him nearly lose control Again (at the Dragon's Nest). the second time he witnessed it, & the third time he would know about.

Vash is a walking atomic bomb with multiple charges. even with how cheerful & kind he is, he's shown Multiple Times that he does not have full control. he is decidedly something different, something Hazardous to humans, and Wolfwood knows this very very painfully.

for all that Wolfwood loves Vash, he is also terrified of him. and at this point in the story, that terror is potent enough to nearly eclipse his affection for Vash.

leading to some of the next most iconic pages:

[ID: The next page starts with Wolfwood standing behind the sitting Vash, his expression hard and the moon bright behind him. Vash seems sad and has one eye open. A close-up focuses on Wolfwood looking down.

Wolfwood thinks, "So easy to pull the trigger. So easy to remove half the problem." Another close-up with bright lighting obscures his face but for one eye. Then Vash turns around curiously and asks, "What's up?" Wolfwood sits behind him and says "Nothin'. Come on. Let's go." Vash seems surprised as Wolfwood scolds, "Don't get yerself tangled up in every little skirmish ya see. It'll be pointless if ya get yerself killed before ya meet him." End ID]

the manga frames it like Vash doesn't know Wolfwood was pointing the gun at him, but I think he did know. he's freakishly perceptive over and over again throughout the story. he HAS to be in order to survive like he has. he'd hear the movement of the gun & sense Wolfwood behind him...

he'd know. i really think he knew.

but he doesn't do anything about it. there is zero fear in his face. he turns to look at Wolfwood curiously, a bit confused, but not afraid. he never once thought that Wolfwood would shoot him. there's full faith and trust there in that moment.

Wolfwood pretends that nothing happened, & Vash lets him. they both move on, not talking about it, because they never talk about Anything of substance like this (not until much, Much later).

overall, it's just such a great example of their relationship's development. Wolfwood's fear & Vash's trust that he won't act on it... it's just. Man.

(EDIT: people have made some good points about how Vash's expression when Wolfwood points the gun at him shows that he probably did know and YEAH that's a good point! & probably why I was so certain he knew lol, I just hadn't realized it myself)

Ep 26: Under the Sky So Blue

Thank you to the @trigun98watchparty for making this possible, and to all of you who have been reading along with me to this point. It's been a great trip down memory lane and getting acquainted or re-acquainted with other '98 fans who watched the first Trigun and loved it despite its flaws.

Also big thank you to those who engaged in meta, especially @tiggymalvern! Finding you again was the nicest surprise of all!

Without further ado, I am plant-ing (HARF) my tongue firmly in cheek for the intro to this recap.

Knives. We need to talk.

You have spent the last 130 years working on becoming the most basic bitch on NML, and you've done a good job. You couldn't be any blonder or blue-eyed. You have (had) a loyal second-in-command who did all your dirty work for you so you didn't have to get your hair mussed. You have a Squad who secretly hates you but sticks around because they want to be on the right side of things if you win out. And you have a silly-looking pair of boots.

It's also well known that you are the Beverage Boy of NML. On your desk (which is sitting in front of a big loopy wall art stating "Live, Laugh, Murder Everyone") and next to the "Universe's #1 Brother" mug you bought yourself is a canvas frame that says "But first, coffee." You probably killed everyone else at Target so you could get the latest Stanley.

But Knives. Knives. The wine? That's a red you're drinking. Red wine doesn't get chilled. It should be decanted and served at room temperature. Plus, basic bitches drink rosé, or a white zinfandel. To make your declassé behavior worse, you're drinking it out of a martini glass. If you're going to have a Cosmo, have a Cosmo. It's no shame. But really - how are you going to claim that you're a superior breed if you don't know such simple rules of etiquette?

Get a grip, Beverage Boy.

--I wonder whether the twins need to eat and drink, or whether it's just easier for them if they do.

--You know, Knives, humans wouldn't have had to rely so heavily on the Plants if you hadn't crashed the ships. Ofc he didn't intend to have anyone survive besides himself and Vash, which sounds pretty boring. What were the two of you going to do for all eternity?

--Was Knives working on the guns before the ship crashed, and that's what he went in to find?

--I remember seeing somewhere that the little cartridge above the barrel of the Long Colts is a teeny Plant, or Plant-stuff. Anyone else recall this?

--NOW who's the big whiny baby, Knives? (my leg, it hurts! Why?)

--That must be a very young Doc on the ship. Although, there's nothing to say that a year on NML is the same as a year on Earth. It would be more surprising if it was, rather than it wasn't.

--No but seriously, how did Knives get himself and Vash's severed arm out of July after getting blasted to smithereens?

--"Hi Knives! Living as a human was great! Congratulations bro, I am done with your shit!"

--Vash kept quite a few of Leonov's wires. They've come in handy.

--Knives has learned Vash's physical tricks well enough to keep up with him... and Vash has finally figured out how to control his Plant powers well enough to cancel his brother out. (Tristamp really nailed this; their battle in the final ep was fantastic)

--Vash is worn out. Not only has he been shot through the shoulder by his brother, he's likely not completely healed from the encounter with Legato.

--Even in death, WW is looking after his friend and kicking his ass to do something, damnit! I'm right here to help you!

--The peppering Knives got from the Punisher likely wouldn't have been enough to put Vash off, but Knives has never been able to handle physical pain. Vash remembers this very well and takes excellent advantage of it.

--that boy has jawlines for days

--A blast from the well, the cauldron of Rebirth. Vash is reborn to be his own person, to make the right choices for himself and his conscience, rather than for her memory.

Which is what every mother wants for her son. I should know.

--go get your man, Meryl, he won't keep you waiting. if he did you'd go find him anyway.

--Vash leaves his coat, his gun... and his sunglasses. He's done hiding behind them. He doesn't need to anymore.

--This would have been the ending scene, for most anime. Anyone who watches anime gets used to the vague ending, the things left unsaid, and the ambiguity. There's rarely a "happy ending" the way Westerners think of them. Vash could have wandered off into the sunset, leaving the viewer to wonder whether he ever saw Milly and Meryl again. That's pretty normal.

And then there's Trigun, which takes that expected ambiguity and says "nah, we're not done."

Vash comes back to town. He's made his choice to accept the girls into his life, of his own volition, and he's going to let them make their own choices about having him (and his brother) in their lives. There would be an awful lot to sort out, but he wants to try.

I have Big Thoughts about what could happen after this, and of course a fanfic, but my cat wants me to go to bed now. She's being very persistent.

man this was a fun one. i loved seeing vashwood being a battle couple again and just having a relatively low-stakes/light-hearted romp was a really nice thing to read after the horrors. which i am now a few weeks removed from, but they still haunt me...

trigun: the lost plant:

as someone who had (has!! i still love it!) an enduring dr stone obsession in 2021-2022, i am IMMUNE to boichi's art!!! this is significantly hornier than dcst though, not that i'm surprised in the slightest, dcst does have its own horny designs/moments unfortunately... this is the difference between shonen and seinen i suppose--hold on, that's not what this post is about!! *deletes entire other paragraph talking about dr stone*

60 years post-canon... vash's lifespan has been significantly shortened, but i do wonder how much he has left in him. he lived 150 years without any visible black appearing in his hair, so even if he has just a few strands of blonde left, they might last him a long time... well i don't think any of these stories are canon anyway so it doesn't matter LOL

as far as the plot goes...

the explanation for how plants produce matter is interesting but why did it manifest as a child and why is it a black hole and why this specific plant and how did vash even--oh, WHATEVER!! i suppose there is a reason boichi was the artist for dr stone and not the writer.

very cool to see vash drawn in boichi's style though! it's pretty similar to the early dr stone manga, even though dcst came 5+ years later... and the art style of dcst changed over time, although--wait, no, that's NOT what this post is about!!!

the denizens of the sand planet:

okay, this one is by... *googles* wait, this is the guy who did lucifer and the biscuit hammer?? and planet with??? HUHHH... i've only watched planet with, but i've heard VERY good things about biscuit hammer (manga)... anyway

incredibly jarring tone shift from the previous story lol... i really enjoy the rai-dei focus though. he's cool but he didn't get a backstory in the manga so i appreciate this a lot. i wouldn't mind more stories like this focusing exclusively on side characters tbh.

it gets pretty brutal... i don't know what to say about this story besides that. it's an interesting look at what could've made rai-dei the way he is.

cutting is fighting:

we're ending this not with a bang but with a whimper... swapping meryl in for the haircut scene is... blegh. whatever. and they exaggerate her crush on vash too much. like yeah she's kind of tsundere in canon (moreso in the anime imo) but she's not a teenager yknow? the satellite tv story did that too but that one was supposed to be goofy and exaggerated so it was whatever.

the most interesting thing here is the lack of dialogue. that's a fun creative choice. and i like the gag with vash's hair being too nasty to comb LOL... and the haircut options. that's all...

overall i'd give this a... 6.5/10? 'les enfants' was definitely my favorite by far and nightow's story was a lot of fun too. the others ranged from "meh at best" to "sure, it was good" lol. i liked seeing the different art styles... i don't have much else to say.

today, as I re-read ch 3 of Trigun Maximum vol 1, the focus of our story shifts to post-timeskip Meryl! what's she up to? what strange new translation discrepancies will I stumble upon next? let's jump right in and find out! 😁

(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)

ok so the moment I saw the first page, I had to go grab Trigun vol 1 for comparison purposes.

SO. a couple things I wanna note about the in-'verse timeline, for posterity:

Lost July happened on July 21, 0104

Fifth Moon happened in October of 0110

at Fifth Moon, Vash references the Fall as having happened 150 years ago...

...which has me thinking that some major post-Fall event led to the decision to start a new calendar "era" - like how, in tristamp, the "Planet Era" was heralded by humanity managing to establish a planet-wide radio network using a satellite that was launched pre-Fall (source: Studio Orange on Twitter)

(SIDE-NOTE: on the sheet we see Meryl hand Roberto towards the beginning of tristamp ep 1, we see Meryl's birth year marked as "PE081" and her age as "23" - which tells us that tristamp starts in the year 0104 - which tracks with the date the manga gives us for Lost July! and also has me thinking we won't have a Fifth Moon in the new anime, but I digress;;;;; )

Trigun Maximum picks up 2 years after Fifth Moon (0112)...

...but we first see post-Fifth Moon Meryl on her 23rd birthday in February of 0113...

...meaning a few months have passed since we met Eriks!

oh, and that office lady, Karen, says Meryl's Vash assignment was 4 months long, which puts the start of Trigun vol 1 at July of 0110!

anyway. I thought that was interesting. if it hasn't been done already, it would be cool for someone to keep track of the manga timeline (someone who isn't me, lmao - I've already spent over an hour on this post;;;;; )

anyway! here's the first little translation discrepancy that jumped out at me this chapter! similar wording, sure, but to me, subtle differences in meaning and overall vibes the phrasing gives off rly emphasizes Vash's softness in the Overhaul 💕

When I said I wasn't ready for this to end on my last post I didn't intend to then not post until the weekend, but somehow using TriMax to try and soothe my JJK feels didn't seem like a good idea, so here we are.

Stream-of-consciousness thoughts for TriMax Vol. 14, Chapters 4-6 below.

Chapter 4: Never Give Up! Never Surrender!

This honestly seems like an odd title given how suicidal our main character is, but let's run with it. Maybe it's referring more to the Earth Fleet.

Vash, asking important questions.

WTF, why is dead Legato just standing there screaming? Like, yes, I get that him standing around screaming in an unsettling fashion is totally in character for him, but... he's dead, yeah? Or... is it Vash screaming? I mean, I feel like screaming is generally the appropriate response to Legato showing up.

What the...? Surprise Wolfwood. He looks in pretty good spirits for a dead man.

Dang, that's a lot of ghosts.

OMG it's REM.

Wait, is he dying? Like, I know he's dying, but is he dying dying??

Oh, he hit a wall between him and them. He must not be quite gone yet. But gods, his hair looks fully black here.

Meanwhile, humanity is trying its very, very best to communicate with the Plants Knives has absorbed.

The good news is Knives and/or the Plants he's merged with just saved all of Humanity on Noman's Land. The bad news is everyone still has to deal with Knives.

I still don't know what the hell he caught, if anything.

Dang, Knives isn't even gonna bother slaughtering the humans. He's just gonna leave them to rot.

What is that noise, Knives? Is it maybe your sisters? Are they now making their noise un-ignorable?

Were you really united? Did you ever actually check with them? Or did you just assimilate and assume that because the assimilation took, they were in agreeance?

It's not just Vash at this point, though, is it?

Wait, is Vash gonna plug into Knives? Ohhhh, he does not look enthusiastic about this move.

Sooooo much giant Plant underboob.

Oh, Vash is going to plug himself into the connection they've set up to try and talk with the Plants. That's hella dangerous. Has he ever been plugged into anything before? What if he can't maintain his sense of self in there? Though I guess Chronica could when she plugged into Domina... but that was only a fraction of the entity Vash is gonna jump into, and the entity he's gonna jump into includes Knives.

Hahahaha, I feel like Knives telling Vash not to touch him is exactly the fuel Vash needs. Big sibling energy here.

This looks distinctly unpleasant for the both of them.

Chapter 6: Mind Games

Memories for everyone!

Yeah, Meryl's allowed to panic a bit when she gets inundated with foreign memories again.

But look at her, doing her best to stay focused. She knows Vash is at his limit and she's doing her best to support him.

UGH, HE CAN FEEL HER EMOTIONS!!! HE CAN FEEL THEM!!!! That there's a rare genuine Vash smile. He may not know if it's gonna work, but he's so grateful for her effort and support. He's glad she's here for him right now.

This is a Thing. Everything dissolves when communication ends. When there's no more room for it, whatever the reason may be.

Heh, they call Vash "Red Brother." I approve. I think he'd like that.

This scene. I love this scene. I love the tenderness of his touch on the one Plant's head. I love how he changes his words from a statement of fact, a demand and a command, to a desperate request. I love her smiling peacefully through her tears.

WHAT IS THIS?!?! WHAT IS THIS PROMISE THAT HE'S NEVER MADE BEFORE?!?! WHAT IS THIS WILL TO LIVE AND TO COME BACK AND TO SPEND TIME WITH SOMEONE HE CARES ABOUT INSTEAD OF RUNNING AND RUNNING AND HIDING AND ISOLATING??!?! WHAT. IS. THIS?!!?!?!?

After watching Stampede, I read somewhere that someone was saying how those who were familiar with the series were gonna have fun explaining to Stampede-onlies how Knives getting destroyed in July is just him being dramatic. Looking at him missing HUGE CHUNKS of his body and yet still somehow maintaining his basic shape, I can't help but think he's being dramatic again.

"My head's killing me." You don't say? Maybe it's because HALF OF IT IS MISSING?? What a freaking dork.

I... honestly don't know if what Vash is aiming for here is something that can be defined as "freedom."

My favourites… well, I have to say I’m happy with my ink drawings from the November challenge I did. I’m honestly just surprised I got them done - I think my favourites from there were the Akutagawa and Ousama ones. There’s also the post-Meursault comic I did close to the beginning of the year… that one is definitely au at this point and you can tell I don’t make comics a lot, but I still think it’s funny. I also finished some oc portraits from TCOL and I like the way they turned out. Again, I’m mostly happy because I got them done.

As for writing and analyses, again, I’m usually happy with things simply when I complete them. My standards are so high lmao. I’m pretty happy with anything I posted under the trigun meta tag, especially my Wolfwood thoughts on his terrible lying and weird split expression, and I did a couple of BSD character analyses that I’m pretty proud of, namely Mushitarou and grief, Dazai and people, Ranpo’s development, and Jouno and the tragedy of his “death”. Also happy with my fics and TCOL… in that I’m happy I wrote anything at all lol. Hope to write more this year :)

What were your favourites from last year? I know I loved the meiji era skk and the fma scene with them (I recall these really vividly!), but I don’t think I could possibly pick a favourite!

CW! Death, violence

-Confrontation-

You hadn’t been hunting Vash the Stampede for very long before you found him in a little village in the middle of nowhere.

He’s sitting outside, on a chair, his body bandaged and his face unshaven. He looks like a wreck.

This is the man who killed Legato Bluesummers, your husband. This man you’ve come to see, to avenge your husband’s death.

It brings you some small relief that Legato’s murder was taking a toll on the man who took his life.

“Hey,” you say casually, waving at him, feeling all the rage and anger swirling within you. But you push it down. Not yet. Some part of you Had to hear his side of the story.

“Hey,” Vash the Stampede waves back at you. He looks a little surprised someone had come out here to talk to him.

You sit down on the porch, at first not meeting his eyes.

“Can I help you on this fine morning?” he asks. He sounds tired, strained. Like he’s trying his best to be friendly with you, but he’d rather be left alone at the moment. That was too bad.

“Tell me about Legato Bluesummers,” you say.

“What?” the friendliness in his tone immediately dissipates. “What name did you just say?”

“Legato Bluesummers,” you repeat. “He was someone…very dear to me.”

“Are you one of them? Are you a gung-ho gun? Here to avenge him?” Weird. You were under the impression that this man was a bit eccentric, a goof, but here he was, dead serious.

You shake your head. “Not a gung-ho gun. Here for answers though.”

You remove the weapon from your jacket pocket, train it on him.

His blue eyes harden. They are tragic.

“What happened to Legato? Why’d you kill him?” You thought you were going to be stronger in this moment, for him, but here you are, shakily aiming a gun, your lip quivering and tears already threatening to spill from your eyes. You beg he doesn’t notice.

“I’m sorry. There must’ve been another way, I just didn’t see it in time…”

“But what happened?!” you demand.

“How did you know him?”

“Married for four years,” you announce, showing him the wedding ring you had looped around a chain that you were now wearing as a necklace.

His eyes widen, he shakes a bit. A family, that he had torn apart. You can see the regret, the pain forming in his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he says. “I didn’t want to kill him, I really didn’t…” he tells you the story. How Legato used his powers to manipulate the townspeople. How he waited in front of Vash’s gun for his own death. How he smiled when he died.

“I’m so sorry,” he says, concluding the story.

This man was suffering. You could tell. You remembered accidentally overhearing Legato’s conversation with Millions Knives. “Vash the stampede will feel eternal pain and suffering,” or something along those lines, Legato had said.

This was what he had meant? He died to make Vash suffer?

Your stomach churns, your resolve wavering. Your gun was still trained on him, but now it lowers. You’re not sure how long you’ve been crying, but judging by the concerned look on his face, you guess a while.

“I…see,” you say. This man killed your husband. You should hate him. But looking at him now, it’s clear he’s nearly as shaken up as you are.

“I’m so sorry,” he says again. “I really wish I could’ve seen the other way before it was too late…”

“From the sound of it, you really didn’t have any other options,” you sigh, tucking the gun back into your jacket. “I believe you. Legato…would do something like that, for Millions Knives.”

There was your true enemy. Millions Knives. The man who gave Legato that order.

“I’m sorry for coming down here and bothering you, thank you for the answers,” you say, hugging your knees and staring at the activity of the small village.

“I’m sorry that this happened in the first place. No matter what, no one has the right to take the life of another. And I’m a killer now. I pulled the trigger myself.”

You watch him stare down at his shaky hand, likely the one he used to kill Legato.

Legato had taken so many lives. He was nothing like Vash the Stampede. You had come expecting to take a life, too.

But a part of you just couldn’t. Vash didn’t want this to happen, you genuinely believed him, and you just…couldn’t take his life.

You get up, thank him for informing you, and leave, debating what to do with yourself now.

You didn’t stand a chance against Millions Knives. You knew that. And a part of you believed Legato wouldn’t want you to just…throw your life away in a mission to avenge him.

So you would fill Legato’s role, be at Knives’s side, to honor your husband’s Legacy. You would witness the destruction of humanity, for Legato.

-Flashback, a day before his death-

“Going already?” you were waiting outside Millions Knives’s chamber, when Legato stepped out.

“Yes. I’ve been given my mission,” he informs you with his usual, monotonous voice. “I leave at once.”

“Know when you’ll be back?” you ask, taking his hand in yours.

“No. I doubt I will be returning anytime soon,” he says.

“Oh…I see,” you assumed he was simply saying he had a long mission ahead of him, but something about his tone told you something was wrong. “What’s the mission?”

“That’s classified, y/n. Please don’t concern yourself with it.”

“Alright,” you learned to pick up on when he didn’t want to talk about something. “Just…be safe, alright? I love you, you know…”

“…I know. I care deeply for you too. Don’t do anything reckless in my absence.”

You press his palm to your cheek for just a moment, knowing he didn’t like physical affection, but wanting to savor him for a second.

He doesn’t object, just indulges you for the moment before pulling away. “I must go.”

“Okay…I’ll see you later?”

He doesn’t respond to this. He gives you a firm look but that’s about it, a look you can’t read.

He walks past you, determined and steady, like he always was. You had no idea he was marching to his death.

That was the last time you saw him.

a little bit ago @vault-heck tagged me for WIP Wednesday. Yes, I know it's Monday. Look, WIP Wednesday is, like a state of mind, ok? xD

I'd love to share something from Water of Life but I am currently in a war with CH 13 and I don't want to share anything I haven't already shared. So instead I will share this chunk from the unplanned sequel to my Trigun 1998 Vashwood fix-it fic But Like a Refugee. I'd love to link it BUT A03 is down again so I can't lol

Anyway, here is the (still rough state) opening for the sequel, which takes place 10 years after the previous fic (yes this could, in a roundabout way, spoil something for Trigun 1998):

Wolfwood’s eye’s flutter open, refusing to focus right away, at least not until the memory of drifting, floating feathers clear completely from his head. Something had woken him from his dream, but he’s not sure what. Maybe it had been nothing but the usual things that go bump in the night, the things that posed no threat, but still woke him sometimes. Like Vash breathing too loudly, or moving to quickly. Even after so many years, it still happened—

A soft knock on the door in the dead silence of the night sets Wolfwood’s heart fluttering, he had not been expecting it, and it did have an eerie quality to it; a barely heard noise, but it wouldn’t surprise him if that was what woke him. In sleep he was even more vigilant than in waking. Behind him, Vash mutters something mostly unintelligible. He too was a vigilant sleeper.

“I’ll take care of it, go back to sleep,” he says to Vash, and then to the door: “Who is it?”

“Woof woof, I need water,” a tiny voice says through the door. It does sound a little hoarse and dry.

Wolfwood smiles, “Just a second honey, let me get dressed.”

Immediately he had known who the voice belonged to: Danny who was always quick to point out her name was spelled with a Y and not an I. Danny, who was sometimes fussy and sometimes not. Danny who called him Woof Woof because she misheard his name on introduction. Almost all of the kids had a different nickname for him, he thought it was sweet, but he also thought it was some sort of cosmic retribution for the years of nicknames that he had pummeled Vash with. For every Needle Noggin, Spikie, Tongari, Blondie, Pinhead, Pincushion et cetera there was now a Woof Woof, Woofy, Nico, Nicky, Wolf, Woody, Smoky and others. In a small bid to win back a portion of his sanity, he had recently started calling Vash Angel and rarely anything else, while Vash always called him Nick. Through some sort of unspoken agreement the kids seemed to understand that those names were between them and them alone.

Rolling out of bed, Wolfwood finds his discarded clothes from earlier and slips back into them. He’s waking up more now, but he’s still not very graceful on his feet. On the bed, Vash rolls over to face him.

“Did we forget to fill the jugs?” Vash asks, mumbling in a way only Wolfwood could decipher after years of interpreting Vash’s sleep talk.

“Maybe, but I don’t think so,” Wolfwood replies. “You know how she is. She’s funny about the water sometimes.”

“I am not!” Danny says through the door, just loud enough to be heard.

They both laugh as Wolfwood stuffs his smokes and lighter into his pants pocket, then steps over to Vash’s side of the bed and leans down to kiss him on the temple, then his cheek and finally the corner of his mouth. “Go back to sleep,” he says. Vash hmmms and gently swipes a thumb along Wolfwood’s jawline before his hand drops down to the mattress. Behind him he can hear the faintest sounds of lips smacking, as if a small child is projecting how thirsty they are.

Wolfwood rolls his eyes. “I’m comin’ girl, I’m comin’.”

As often is the case when he steps from their humble little box they call a home and into the courtyard that separates it from the orphanage, Wolfwood is softly punched in the gut by a mix of emotions. Even after ten years of living there, it is hard for him to believe that this is his life now, that this was what everything had led up to. That this is what he very nearly missed out on.

Beside him, Danny takes his hand, as if she were afraid to cross back the way she had come on her own. She almost startles a jump out of him. He had, to his chagrin, almost forgotten why he was standing there in the first place. Sometimes these little moments he had were just too powerful.

Together they cross the courtyard, mostly in silence, but Wolfwood is curious about the water.

“Now, be honest,” he starts, trying to sound as genuinely not-judgy as he can. “Are the jugs really empty or did you just want fresh water?”

Danny remains silent for a few more steps and then says: “It’s colder from the tap.”

Well, at least they hadn’t neglected to leave the kids water for the night, he thinks as they walk passed the Punisher, now decommissioned and standing in the courtyard like a guardian instead of a weapon.

"Alright, let's get you some water."

Oh! It looks like only Vash is being featured in the opening, which is pretty atypical. That might have been part of the reason I was so thrown off?

Okay so the newest antagonist’s tech is a weird mix of high and low-tech.  Like I think it’s being powered by advanced, glowy-blue tech, but the shapes and actions (aside from like.  how those actions work) are still kind of crude!

I wonder if other plants are put in danger this often lol

Good to know Vash can be serious!  Kinda surprised that didn’t come up sooner, but I guess even if they were causing a lot of incidental damage the previous antagonists have been focused on him and not just wanton destruction.

“there’s no use in revenge,” now???? To a guy whose only personality has been his son and revenge???

Okay they may be implying that same point  - wait piano again??  They are really leaning hard into this I had thought there was like. One scene about it.

Well that was something. I can’t say I was really expecting a conversation there, but I certainly wasn’t expecting dismemberment.

Two contrasting “whose side are you on” questions within a span of as many scenes! Neat.

ooookay I see where the biblical references start coming into play.  I thought it was just Wolfwood, guess not! ...I have no idea what he’s referring to, though.  Probably something old testament? Which is interesting because Wolfwood has a lot of cross stuff happening, but other than that I am only getting the surface level of whatever parallels are being drawn here.

Aside from the next shot, I guess!  Knives gets a knife halo. ...or maybe the knives are doing the circles of heaven/ranks of angels thing? hmmm.

Okay interesting that’s already a change in approach from Vash!  Pursuing Knives now instead of the other way around.

Okay so. Kept the tone from the end of the last episode.  Okay! I wonder if they’re gonna mostly stick to that from now on, or maybe start bouncing between the two?

I had absolutely no idea about the other people working with Knives.  Like, none.  I guess I knew that there was a group with him (hence Wolfwood(?)), but nothing about the rest of the group. Wonder what’s happening there!  They took both the red and blue plants - which I guess I assumed were respectively dead and alive. Are they, like, hatching them?? They were kind of suspiciously egg-shaped.

So.  Admittedly I was previously not super emotionally invested in Vash.  I kind of knew a bit about his deal, going into things - the whole “peace and love” meme, contrasted with the material of the show - but the kind of outsider framing from Meryl and Rodrigo made me feel like we should get to know more about them before focusing so much on him.  Anyways, I didn’t dislike him, I’d just yet to get attached to him.  All of that rescinded now, I guess! 

The “I don’t deserve to cry” line made me go ‘Ah.  I understand the hype now!’ I guess, if hype counts as... my mutual’s and what feels like half the internet’s incredible fondness for the guy. Ouch.

No transition here but uh yeah! Lots of fantastic animation again this episode!  Also this episode put a lot of emphasis on framing, both symbolic and cinematic! Both of those points stand out particularly for the whole last several minutes, which were really impressive.

I was rereading the manga the other day and Wolfwood has a flashback to Knives giving him orders to find Vash and to “accompany my little brother once again,” despite the fact that since Wolfwood was introduced in the last couple chapters of Trigun, he didn’t have time to accompany Vash, they just hung out on the bus after they accidentally encountered him by luck, and importantly Wolfwood didn’t even have his orders from Legato about Vash yet, he just knew he had to meet someone in the city as an member of eom. So there wasn’t really any accompanying done there, unless Knives is counting that bus ride which I doubt.

I can’t recall how much Nightow worked on writing/helping with 98, but considering how much earlier Wolfwood gets introduced in it, do you think he accidentally mixed in some of what happened in that version with the manga? Bc honestly that’s pretty funny. Or possibly there was supposed to be some adventures with Wolfwood as part of the crew that got cut from the og manga because of fifth moon and the whole knives encounter getting pushed up due to the publishing stuff and all that, and Nightow forgot he never actually got to put that part in the manga

I'd double check the panel ur talking about, tho I don't rly have time to comb for it rn hdkdhfj But

I mean, Nightow has shown a great amount of consistency within his own writing. The number of callbacks to earlier things within the manga consistently took me by surprise (like all the references to earlier vash & wolfwood interactions, the symbolism of things, the way Meryl acts around vash & grows, etc). My dude was probably rereading his own work Constantly to be able to do that. Plus that moment towards the end where Vash remembers Every Single Person he'd met on his travels, including very minor ones - looking thru, I couldn't see a single one Nightow missed, which meant he must have combed thru his own work to find Every Single Character of his work (unless he kept character references, which is also a possibility & also smth worthy of respect)

All that being said, I doubt Nightow would be the type to make an error like that. It's always possible it's a translation error (I'd be curious of what version you saw that in, since Dark Horse translation is known to have a lot of benign mistakes like that). So if anything, I'd blame them

If it Was Nightow tho 🤔 idk the time's skimmed by in the chapter but I feel like at Least a day passed on that bus. They stop in another town along the way, & the towns in Gunsmoke are Not close together. Take for example the fact that the sand steamer ride between April City and May City was a two week journey. By sand steamer. Then the distance between Augusta and Jeneora was... 2000 kilometers? I think. I'd have to double check it, but it's something kind of insane. Point is, things aren't close together in this world. We just don't see the transportation bc it'd be kinda boring to watch lol

All in all, I'd blame it on translation error or the weird fast paced depiction of the end of the manga b4 I'd blame Nightow of mixing up details

lol the Crunchyroll Anime Awards started and MMM boy do I have some thoughts but before I go all spastic about it here's my TL;DR:

What the fuck is BOCCHI THE ROCK! and how the fuck was it nominated for so many god damned things despite me never once even hearing about it?

Oshi no Ko was extremely overrated and over-nominated for a show that falls off after the very first episode.

Actually LOL'd when Hange was nominated as Best Supporting Character in Attack on Titan over Mikasa or fuck even Armin. BUT SHE DESERVES IT SO IT'S COOL.

There's no planet where JUJUTSU KAISEN doesn't sweep.

One Piece was actually robbed of Best Animation by not even being nominated, especially when compared with most of the other nominees.

Okay but no seriously, what the fuck is BOCCHI THE ROCK!? Judging by the categories it was nominated for (alongside fucking Anime of the Year) it's presumably a Slice of Life Comedy, I guess, with an uWu "must protect them at all cost" protagonist.

I'd "heard" of it only in the sense that I've seen it occasionally on Crunchyroll's site, but I've never clicked on it. I've also never heard about it from any sort of anime YouTuber or Tiktoker which I shamefully watch.

It just surprised me to see an anime that's more or less unknown be suddenly nominated for Anime of the Year, but I digress. Probably deserves to be up there more than Oshi no Ko.

Also regarding One Piece being robbed, look I get that it's copium to think it would be nominated for Anime of the Year. With it being as long as it is, totally understandable. All the insane moments are drawn out over a long period of time, where all of the significantly shorter anime tend to have one cool moment after the next, like JJK or Demon Slayer.

That being said, I genuinely think it was robbed for Best Animation by not even being nominated. I get that it's Best Animation overall and not just in individual episodes, but when comparing the numerous episodes of high-quality animation that One Piece gave us last year to the likes of the Attack on Titan Finale, Mob Psycho, or Chainsaw Man? Yeah, there's no question One Piece triumphs over those. The only comparable anime is JJK and Demon Slayer, and then I don't personally know about TRIGUN STAMPEDE since I haven't seen it.

Genuinely, Chainsaw Man being on there above One Piece really threw me because, as much as I like Chainsaw Man, the animation in the first season pales in comparison to most of what Toei put out last year in One Piece. I can't help but feel like it's up there purely because MAPPA made it and they're admittedly God's greatest gift to animation.

But anyways, oh no, another salty One Piece fan upset that their two decades-long anime didn't beat out an itty bitty 2-3 season anime. Fuck me, I guess.

That being said, this list has reminded me once again that I should probably give Vinland Saga another chance. I've heard S2 is exceptional, but I struggled to get halfway through S1 before I dropped it. It's not bad, it's just that I couldn't help but feel like I'd seen it before since I've watched 90% of the entire Vikings series, and this just feels like that but animated lol.

BUT!! I have much to say, both about your new fic and obviously one of the older ones, so here's an extremely belated / extended ART&RCSW <33

Firstly, Maelstrom was incredible, it changed the way I live my life

I don't even watch Trigun Stampede but good lord did you get me hooked on the characters - not to mention, a good poly fic is always the way to my heart

The twist of the secret bastard brothers?? Incredible. Delicious. Amazing. And the not so subtle hatred they have for their father?? The fact that the only good thing to come from him was their darling sister?? My gosh, you've got me wrapped around your finger Rhi

Though I must admit, the whole reveal and the part where reader is being lead to the throne room gave me anxiety - you always manage to surprise me with the way you set things up, and I mean that in the best way possible

I can't say anything about the characterisation of Vash and Knives because I don't watch the show, but I imagine that as with everyone else, you've done an amazing job

Also the sense of hopelessness at the end?? Because like, there's literally no escape - the best type of ending in my professional opinion

Next up on the agenda, we have a fic (series??) that I know you're not particularly fond of, but I absolutely love

Through the cold, I'll find my way back to you, your Hawks / Dabi soulmate fic - it has me in a fucking chokehold

It's literally everything I love in a fic - soulmates, poly relationship, yandere, it's just amazing

The slight sprinkle of angst kinda feels like a punch to the gut, but in a satisfying way - not to mention, the fact that Natsuo still keeps in touch with the reader even though they don't really have a connection aside from Touya kills me, he's so sweet

And poor Keigo (he's insane but I do not care <33)

The way my stomach drops when the reader realises that she has another soulmate will never not be a great feeling, but the way she knows instinctively that something is missing because Dabi isn't there really is painful

Like I said, I know you've said you don't really like the series, but I'm here to reassure you, I loved it, so rest assured, the hard work didn't go down the drain <33

ahh but this ask is so nice!! honestly i was so worried about posting maelstrom cuz it's a new fandom for both me and sort of in general – i know the manga and old anime have been around for a while, but for most people it's new – and i wasn't sure if people were actually going to read it

turns out you did anyway, not knowing any of the characters vhgfjdksjdhfjdks it's always such a huge compliment when that happens. it's actually how i found my way first to bnha and then to haikyuu so, yeah, it makes me happy to see it's the same for you guys

as for through the cold... hoo boy. i did have big plans for that one, and every month or so there's a part of me that wants to either delete part 2 and start again, or delete the entire thing and start again, with better execution this time. i may not be as in love with bnha as i used to be, but hawks and touya, and that particular storyline (i am if nothing else a sucker from the soulmate trope gone wrong)

but also... the part i hate about series, and one of my biggest gripes as a writer is when there's a demand for part 2's and 3's but then it's crickets in the notes. part 2 kinda flopped and idk if it was because it wasn't great or if people just couldn't be bothered to leave a response, so while i do occasionally have the motivation to continue it i don't know if it's actually worth while or if anyone (aside from you haha) would be into it. but then i think about all that delicious angst and keigo and touya being jealous assholes and... hmmmm.... vghfjdkjhvfjdks

in any case, i'm glad you liked it and it was very sweet of you to send this ask and i adore you.

ugh i need to move stuff on to the external drive again, storage is filling up again. i think it was mainly the ps2 isos i ripped for the emulator recently lol. tho it does look like half my storage is taken up by my video & music folders:

surprised that my pictures folder is taking up so little space (12.1 GB) bc i have been downloading so many images and scanning things lately, thought that may have been the culprit for my storage filling up but that's hardly making a dent lmao.

anyways yea once my trigun remix dvds show up i'll be ripping those + all the bonus content, my existing trigun rip folder for both the funi complete series set + bonus features (which was just clean op&ed) and badlands rumble + bonus disc is about 5GB (tho it is only the eng dubbed episodes & movie, if i'd ripped the subbed versions too it'd probably double in size lol) so gotta make sure i have room for that. prob should move videos i'm not watching a lot over to the external drive to free up space for the remix rip lol

trigun stampede ep1 thoughts

cant say i like it opening right away w space, but that might be bc im biased from the anime. i liked the anime's approach a lot more than the manga's, honestly. especially not just space, but the whole seeds thing too shouldnt have been shown as the first thing

i am really not a fan of the designs of... most things in the ep lol. i've got a bone to pick w the designers for this series

the first scene was v out of context so i wont pick that apart

wish meryl didnt look 10 years old, but at least she doesnt sound 10. that was a criticism i had abt milly in the 90s anime

still upset abt the roberto guy, i guess they could change my mind but so far hes :/

im not bothered by meryl's occupation change (as a journlist only i mean), it doesnt really matter to me imo

not to have nostalgia glasses on, but i miss vash's old voice. i hear this one and im like oh this is sword art online boy/teru mp100 and i dont think i like that guy's voice anyway

again with a design thing, idk how i feel abt vash having "lost technology" so present. i made a post abt this way back, but maybe they change smth (but also they cant exactly justify the whole modern jp fashion thing in futuristic sci-fi space setting either so i wonder if theyll even attempt to explain this)

i like the bit abt vash interfering w plant stuff being added as a crime. i feel like in the original anime his bounty was iconic, but in that and the manga idk why it was even there, except to establish his contrasting pacifist nature against ppl that want the reward for his capture.

it also showing mps is a bit more interesting when the manga kinda felt like it pulled order/gov out of nowhere (before knives did his best to kill everyone, mostly getting rid of that)

i love seeing a town defend vash immediately 🥺 technically i dont think its good for new audiences, (it shows hes not some monstrous villain, but not how he couldve gotten his rep, while before it was clearly the destruction caused from other ppl going after him, and him accepting the blame) but i'll pretend that what happened to him here happened at the end of the manga instead
