Saint Lucy
 283 - 304
Feast Day: December 13
Patronage: blind, martyrs, Perugia, Italy, epidemics, salesmen, throat infections, writers
Saint Lucy is a 4th c. virgin martyr who died during Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. Little is known of Lucy's life but legend gives us many stories. One is that after the governor ordered her to be defiled at a brothel, guards were not able to move her, even with the help of oxen pulling her. Another was that while being tortured, her eyes were gouged out, yet when her body was being prepared for burial they discovered her eyes had been restored.

Today we celebrate the Virginmartyr Lucy of Syracuse. Saint Lucy lived in Syracuse of Sicliy during the reign and persecution of Emperor Diocletian. She is one of the very few female saints who are mentioned in the canon of Saint Gregory the Great as well as Bede’s history. She was born to wealthy parents, her father a Roman and her mother a Greek. Lucy’s mother suffered from dysentery for four years and it was under the young girl’s suggestion that she and her mother pray to Saint Agatha who is considered a wonderworker. During the liturgy, the gospel of the woman with the issue of blood was read and this convinced Lucy’s mother to travel to Catania to pray at Saint Agatha’s tomb. While praying, Saint Agatha appeared to Lucy in a vision, foretelling her of her great glory in Syracuse, just as she was the glory of Catania. At this very moment, Lucy’s mother was healed. From this event, Lucy consecrated her virginity to God and distributed her inheritance to the poor. Having been approached by a pagan seeking her hand in marriage, she politely refused his proposal and he denounced her as a Christian to the prefect of the city and she was immediately arrested. The prefect condemned her to be defiled in a brothel, but she was miraculously preserved as they were not able to move her from the spot in which she was standing. The pagans then went to burn her in a pyre but the flames did not harm her. Finally, she was condemned to have a sword thrust at her throat, and thus she gave up her soul at 21 years of age. Saint Lucy’s name is derived from the Latin word for light, and thus she is called upon for healing any form of eye diseases. May she intercede for us always + #saint #lucy #lucia #saintlucy #stlucy #santalucia #light #martyr #virginmartyr #rome #roman #italy #sicily #syracuse #agatha #saintagatha #diocletian #emperor #romanemperor #bede #gregorythegreat #saints #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Syracuse, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmFGTLMvGI-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Archbishop of Sri Lanka's Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo resides at St. Lucia's Cathedral. The cathedral is situated on 18,240 square feet of ground in Kotahena, which is northeast of Colombo. It has its roots in a modest place of worship constructed under the Dutch period.
A statue of the Madonna and Baby Jesus known as "Our Lady of Kotahena" was presented to the parish in 1938. Every year in the month of May, a procession carries this monument through the streets of Kotahena. The cathedral is regarded as Sri Lanka's oldest and biggest parish cathedral. It is named after and devoted to the virgin and martyr saint Saint Lucy. The front is embellished with seven sculptures and supported by large Ionic columns. The cross on the concrete lantern atop the cathedral's dome may be seen silhouetted against the sky.

Eyes on a plate: This is how one identifies Santa Lucia, the patroness of light, grain, wheat, and eyes. Legend is that her eyes were gouged out either to make herself unattractive to her pagan betrothed or upon her arrest when Roman soldiers could not move her from where she stood. She was a determined young woman with a lot of insight. Hers is a significant story related to faith and the winter solstice. Join me in NYC on Sunday, December 11 at @pastaeaternyc. Along with special guest @sciurca_sicilian_chef, who will be creating a traditional Sicilian menu for the feast, we will have a full four course meal, wine, live music, and an altar and presentation for Santa Lucia. She's a powerful protectress! Register at link in bio to step into her light. #experiencesicily #sicily #santalucia #saintlucy #lucia #divinefeminine #sicilia #italy #italia #newyorkcity (Statue of Santa Lucia from Sant'Angelo Muxaro) (at Pasta Eater) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClfPBFQs9oq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

👻 「 Happy Saint Lucy day 」 • Swipe to read the folklore behind this day and stuff that mouth of yours with a saffron bun while you’re at it! Unless you don’t like raisins. In that case, just pretend to join in on the tradition. The dark legend of Saint Lucy’s day! Do you know the dark legend of Saint Lucy’s day? Recently this Saint was celebrated all over Scandinavia and people seem to appreciate this painting I made a while back so I thought I’d share it once again! Looking forward to Christmas? Did you know, that in the middle ages, the 13th night of december was considered dangerous? It was a night were animals could speak and spirits and magical creatures were roaming the streets. Today, Scandinavia and Italy celebrate an italian martyr known as Saint Lucy (or Saint Lucia) who is said to have blinded herself but was given her sight back by god. When burnt at the stake she was not wounded but was eventually killed with a sword. Although in modern times portrayed as a saint wearing a candle lit wreath, many accounts (from the middle ages and even into the late 1900’s) describe Lucy to be a witch, an evil spirit or a leader of spirits. This is connected to her name’s similarity to ”Lucifer”, the devil himself. • ART by # Anton Vitus ( # vitusart / # AVITUS) • Sources: #wikipedia , #isof , #nordiskamuseet • #HappySaintLucyDay #saintlucysday #saintlucy #folklore #mythologyart #folkloreart #darkart #darkartandcraft #darkartist #horror #horrorart #fantasyart #characterdesign #painting #digital #traditional #notai #legend #storytime #art #folklore #saintlucy #darkart #gothic #yule #digitalart #digital #darkartandcraft #darkartist #scandinavia #christmasart #hauntedart https://www.instagram.com/p/CmT4rG0SAtm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

13 Dicembre: SANTA LUCIA
🌾 ✨ 🔥 🌟 🥕
