Prisoners of War, the Effects of Solitary Confinement, and Sonic the Hedgehog
Remember when Sonic was a prisoner of war? Well turns out, that can damage your brain in some pretty awful ways (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). It’s been revealed in several studies that being a POW can cause schizophrenic disorders, anxiety, debility, etc.
But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s talk about the torture that happened in those six months.
Sonic Forces is said by many fans to employ the term “torture” loosely, that simply being confined to an empty room for an extended period of time (six months in this case) is no warrant for the term. While yes, the game certainly does not address the event properly, making it seem as if this circumstance is no big deal, in reality, being confined to an empty room with no human contact is what is defined as “solitary confinement”, a punishment becoming more and more infamous for its adverse effects on those it is inflicted onto.
The various consequences of solitary confinement on a person’s psyche go as follows (Stuart Grassian, Psychiatric Effects of Solitary Confinement):
-Hyperresponsivity to external stimuli, including ordinary things such as the sound of plumbing in another room.
-Perceptual distortions, illusions, and hallucinations, mostly auditory, but may be visual depending on the individual
-Panic attacks
-Difficulties with thinking, Concentration, and Memory
-Intrusive thoughts, typically those of violence against captors
-Paranoia
-Lack of impulse control
-Delirium
Furthermore, the effects and issues with solitary confinement are so severe, that a UN human rights expert stated that solitary confinement for more than 15 days has every right to be labeled as psychological torture (https//www.ohchr.org).
I’ll drop a bit of the professional tone because, well, this is Tumblr, but on with the hedgehog.
As shown here, Sonic has cuffs around both his wrists and ankles. In all honesty, this is even worse than being locked up in a small room. All proper movement for him was restricted. There was no proper stimuli around him, he was locked in a metal prison. Once again, this was for six months. Sonic already struggles with staying still, he feels the need to run most constantly. Being restricted for that long could not have been good for him.
The thing is, you don’t even have to stretch to say that Sonic was tortured, because solitary confinement is torture. Perhaps it would explain why he didn’t give Tails a proper hug upon his return. After all those months with no proper contact, it might have been too much for him at the moment.
“Yawnfest” is nowhere near the proper term to describe these conditions. The proper term is said in the game itself: “torture”.
Maybe this was why Infinite said Sonic “reeked of fear”. Sure, it could easily be interpreted as infinite stroking his massive fucking ego, but what if Sonic truely was afraid? Not only was he defeated (easily) by him, but also Infinite locked him in solitary confinement (ie: torture) for six months.
You don’t have to come up with a bunch of stuff not shown on screen to feed your angst needs (I mean, if you want to, all power to you). You’ve got all the ingredients for a delicious angst-pie right here.
Edit: Just realized that solitary confinement and torture were said as two separate thoughts in the original dialogue. Jesus fucking Christ.

i can never really see eggman taking over the world in forces as a true victory for him since that was mostly infinite’s doing
in MY perfect world its because he was the one who created and perfected the phantom ruby, and manipulated all of the circumstances juuuuust right in order for infinite to team up and work with him and do specifically what eggman wanted - conquering the world in eggmans name. so even if infinite did all the heavy lifting, it was only happening because of eggman
in canon. yeah. sonic forces was kinda a mess huh

actually on the topic of nightmares!!! i wonder if anyone in the cast has had nightmares related to the phantom ruby. that war lasted like six months after all!
Heh, I personally do feel that making the war last literally half a year was just far too long. It's quite a significant chunk of time for many characters... yet absolutely nobody is affected by it. Not physically, not mentally, not emotionally. And of course I understand this is a Sonic game and they're not gonna shown everyone gravely injured and with PTSD, but with six months I truly would have expected some consequences on the cast. If it had only been one or two months or so, it would have been easier for me to suspend my disbelief on this topic, I feel.
Regardless, to answer your question, it does make sense to me that characters would indeed have nightmares. Infinite killed like four or five people right in front of the Avatar, Eggman's Death Egg is filled with captured people and he is heavily implied to have murdered captives, Tails saw Sonic "die" before his eyes(?), the Resistance at the end of those six months was reduced to almost nothing... and then lost 80% of their forces in Operation Big Wave on top. And then they all nearly got scorched alive in the fake fun. It gives enough grounds for nightmares, also considering how absolutely insane Infinite's power is with the Ruby. So I would not be surprised if the cast is in some way affected by it and needs time to mentally recover from the events of the game; it's just not shown or indicated to us, basically.

Think I'm gonna be redoing my blog a bit. I've lost interest significantly in Sonic recently, and while it's a multifandom blog, that's my main theme. I don't hate Sonic, don't get me wrong, I still love it. I'm just very tired of the fandom and all the drama that happens within it, plus this is normal for me; I tend to lose interest in my hyperfixations after a while. The longest ones have only really lasted for a few years, and after that I either lose interest, or they fade into a more shallow interest. So you might still see Sonic stuff from time to time but I want to focus on other things that give me more joy. I don't really get a lot of joy from drawing or writing Sonic fics anymore. Maybe that'll change in the near future, maybe it won't.
I'm bringing this up because while I don't have a large following or anything, I figured some of you might like to know. I know most of you are following me for Sonic stuff, and I understand if you want to unfollow me. You are totally free to do so, no hard feelings.
However, if you decide you like the other stuff I do, I hope you'll stick around. ^^

@loyaltied: god this is so valid. writing a more villainous character can be fun but it severely limits a lot of the interactions you can have if the development away from it is out of the question. its why i write my metal as reformed
[[ LITERALLY RIGHT like obviously... zero disrespect for those who want to write a villainous character as they are, actually you have my UTMOST respect if you do choose to do so-- bcuz keeping on top of interactions like that is a very draining task for me personally, so 10000% you’re doing amazing always. but for me iiiii don’t want too many samey interactions, especially with how the rpc currently lacks some villain characters
i do like to leave room for threads where Neo is clearly the bad guy, bcuz he certainly isn’t opposed from taking such a position. but i also would like him to be SOMEWHAT approachable to most parties. (with a heavy lean into quickly trusting associates of Eggman, but again, haven’t had chance to write much of that so far</3)
most times that i have written Neo (over like. 4 or 5 blogs. over the past years. oops.), with a lot of mainverse development, he has eventually just reformed anyway which left some exploration of his negative traits limited sooo i am kinda leaving it vague this time. he can go either way, depending on thread, depending on muse, ygm.
also on this note. i do like to keep my mainverse consistent though but i found i haven’t found much of my footing as of yeetttt so i’m not entirely sure what i will keep as canon to his mainverse? i just know most of the time, you can talk to him without being attacked but he probably won’t appreciate the company dhdskafhs

Some sonic forces rewrite ideas + gameplay changes cuz why not
The game is saperated in different storys like in the adventure games, heros and 06
Modern Sonic will not be around untill the big finale in a 'the cavalry has arrived' moment
Classic sonic has his own story that mostly does not interfere with the custom hero
^his story will most likely revolve around collecting the chaos emeralds
I like the idea of our character being a former friend of infinite so I am gonna go with that
When you start your avatars story you first create a character and then the level starts in sunset city. You only have your basic grabling hook at that time.
At the end of the level a cutscene plays. Sonic is fighting Eggman similar to the original game. Sonic spindashes Eggman but is suddenly blocked and kicked away by infinite. Insert Eggman bragging.
Your character arrives and you get to choose if you want to help sonic or infinite and eggman. This choice determinds if your gonna join the resistence or the eggman empire.
After you made your choice a boss battle begins to test what you learned in the previous level.
In both senerios sonic is always gonna lose by the illusion squad( the fake chaos, zavok, shadow and metal sonic)
If you choose the hero path you reluctantly escape with tails
If you choose the villain path infinite tells you that he didn't need your help only to be put in place by eggman. You end up getting enlisted into the eggman army
