"Awee, he annoys you too doesn't he baby. Come here my little angel!" Kaveh chuckled and gentle took them back from Alhaitham who seemed mostly unamused...

You nodded reaching into the diaper bag to retrieve the babies favourite toys...which in reality were just a bunch of infant books Alhaitham had collected during your pregnancy...they really were similar. "I mean look at this, that's all they play with. I've never seen a baby read so much till mine was born..."

Kaveh raised a eyebrow at the stack of books, he couldn't imagine reading so much at such a young age, though it was pretty cool to see another person's child do it. "Well, they will be smart without a doubt-" he paused mid sentence as the baby sighed like it was done with him, "I'm sorry, did you just sigh at me little one. You and your father I swear..."

Happy Solarpunk Aesthetic Week and Winter Solstice! ❄️

While we do celebrate here, we don't actually experience winter in my region, or any of the classic four seasons! The weather here is basically a coin toss between searing heat and torrential rain lol. So while I was musing over how to adapt a solarpunk aesthetic to a tropical lifestyle, I came up with this!

Lengthy explanations and chaotic ideas below:

Disclaimer: I am not a science-y person, so I'm not sure how any of these would technically work or what materials would go into making them. Hopefully one day someone could figure it out, but I'm just having fun sharing these ideas for now :)

What works well both in harsh sunlight and heavy downpours, plus is already something that people here use everyday? Umbrellas! How cool would it be to have an umbrella that absorbs sunlight during the day, and turns it into a personal spotlight at night? Or perhaps it could absorb and store large amounts of rainwater, to be re-used later or released somewhere more useful?

My main inspiration for this is the bamboo. This plant already plays a huge role in our lives here -- culturally, economically, and from what I recently learned, ecologically too! Our region suffers from floods often, and bamboo can help to control the flow of water, for example through their roots providing a barrier against soil erosion, or their ability to store large amounts of water and release it gradually during drier seasons. (And that's just one of the many reasons why bamboos are awesome and solarpunky!) I thought it would be cool to have water stored in the 'bamboo nodes' of the umbrella shaft, which could then be detached and used individually, or as components in other tech!

I chose the Amazonian lily pad as the canopy design because 1) it looks big enough to cover a person, 2) it has a wide surface for solar panels to 'photosynthesize' energy, 3) its container-like shape looks as though it could hold rainwater like a funnel while it trickles into the shaft, and 4) it just looks really pretty! Realistically, this canopy might not be able to do everything at once, so I'm hoping for this tech to be modular and highly customizable -- as in, you could replace this 'lily pad' with something else that serves a different function! I did play around with some other designs, here they are hehe

Hibiscus: Our national flower! Have these bad boys growing in my yard so I thought why not. Not sure what functions it would have yet... perhaps the pistil could be a sensor for gathering weather data? Or maybe the anthers are little lights? Maybe it attracts BEES???

Mushroom: Not familiar with the fungi in my area yet so I went with the classic Amanita. Though now I'm kinda regretting because! Wouldn't it be so cool and lunarpunky to design it based on a bio-luminescent mushroom, so it would make sense for the umbrella to glow in the dark? AGH missed opportunities ;;

Anyway while I was designing the umbrella I thought about giving the model a cool fit too, so tadaaa! A customizable pair of pants that can be worn as a shorts + half-skirt/sarong combo during hot weather, or extended to become a full pair of jeans during colder/rainy times! I used zippers as the connectors because they seem easy to sew on and I like the punky vibe it adds to the outfit. HOWEVER, I'm realising that might be inconvenient or way too time consuming for some people. Maybe buttons, magnets or hook-and-loop fasteners would be easier?

As for the shirt, idk that was just for fun. Maybe it changes colour/design based on the surrounding temperature?

Can I just say I really love how Colt and Akita contrast against each other? Colt is so monochrome with barely any color if any at all, and Akita is ALL color, and so many of them!

This wasn’t phrased very compellingly but I do really really like that about them! Despite how aggressively different and opposite their appearances are it’s just…agh! It’s good and cool I love character design skfhhsdvdhdh good siblings fambily

It was completely unintentional their their color palettes contrast that way tbh. Colt was more designed to contrast Chloe, Akita ended up filling in a similar design role.

When thinking of how a Uzi and N shipkid would look, the white on white was a glaringly obvious uncommon palette. It ends up looking pretty good in grey (which ngl I forgot his jacket was last time I colored him in).

I guess in that regard, Akita's color palette is pretty inharmonious. The blue arm/leg warmers contrast a lot, and admittedly was just the first color to come to mind when drafting them.

I think it's a little obvious when seeing them side-by-side like this, but the intent is that they are the N and Uzi of this generation. I've flipped some tropes between them and their parents though. The shipping meta of the new generation isn't going the Nuzi route obviously lol.

Can I ask you where have you found inspiration for your art? For example I've noticed you have a very specific (and beautiful) way you draw jewelry and clothing. The shapes are very organic yet grounded at the same time, give a bit of a Nausicaä vibes, as well as art noveau meets iron age.

Ohhh thank you I love those comparisons 🧡 Because I didn't even know those are the vibes I was going for but yeah that's great actually... This is like when one of you made a playlist inspired by my art... (I still have that saved btw! 🧡 And I still cannot believe!!). Here's a little Rhiam drawing with some jewelry she doesn't (yet) have in canon (earrings she does have but she cannot use them yet)

But what are my inspirations hmmmmmmm many! Idk even what all I have inhaled into my art but I try to list something (this got long so rest under cut):

Nature 🌿 I love both mundane (sparrows, plants growing from asphalt cracks, moss covered street signs... the little details) and grand formations that fill me with awe. There's something about things so vast that take my breath away. Like oceans, mountains, high cliffs, endless tundra, wind so strong you could lean against it, ancient stone that has been scraped visible by massive sheets of ice thousands of years ago. (But I'm guilty of not being that impressed by conventional beauty of average gardens. Aren't people tired of only finding planted blooming flowers beautiful!). Most often I'm drawing inspiration from nature familiar to me, that being Nordic/Scandinavian ones.

I already said nature but birds deserve a special mention! Agh I just love those funky little animals 🦅

Stories! I love making stories, I think they help me grasp and go over my thoughts. I love pouring myself into my characters, it makes them feel both personal but also makes it easier to talk about myself to my fellow storytellers. I'd love to do a long graphic novel or write a book one day, but I also love making ttrpg stories just for and with our little group 🧡 For a long time I felt kinda bad that I wasn't doing "real art" that wasn't just illustrations of my characters. But then I realised doing art for arts sake doesn't really inspire me. I don't want to do art that I'd think would be easily consumable nor do I have any great performance to create with my art. I just love to illustrate stories and tell stories through my art and I think that's great! I still love seeing and experiencing artworks that aren't this illustrative, I just don't have the motivation to do that myself. But I can get really excited of works like Emma Jääskeläinen's granite sculptures!

Other artists! There are two categories I think: 1) those whose work I've seen (usually irl) and whose technique or themes or symbolism facinates me. I usually don't want to create similar art, or replicate their style, or medium even. But there's something about them, a feeling of awe or they feel formidable. Or there's something clever about them that lets me have this sense of epiphany. For example, Jääskeläinen who I already mentioned, Marcel Dzama, Merja Palin, Helena Vaari, Marika Mäkelä, to name a few I've seen lately-ish. And then 2) there are artists whose stories and/or style inspires me and influences my art. One of the biggest inspirations to my softer line art style was and is @albabbgg. @serpentface has some really cool worldbuilding and designs, I think they were also a great influence to how I draw bodies these days. @wiltkingart has also very cool shapes and genders in his paintings. @sanctus-ingenium 's stories and art have been a huge inspiration lately. And to list a few others now that I started: @pangur-and-grim/@greer-art, @beidak-art, @elemei, @emilylorange, @pansylair, @cy-lindric, @psrj, @lokorum

I know kind of what the other cryptid Links are based on… but what about our wind waker fella? I know he’s some kind of sea monster looking thing… I love his tail and he looks so squishable. But what is he based on? Anything mythological, anything from just cool present day media? Or is he his own original thing kinda?

My original design for Cryptid Wind was very much inspired by Pixar’s Luca! I even called him a Sea Monster on the character sheet haha!

But then I thought that he looked too much like Luca, and it wasn’t very fun for me to draw anymore, so I did a LOT of experimenting. I did a lot of sketches trying out different designs, different ocean creatures to base him off of. I ended up making a poll with some designs and everyone… voted on the original. Which wasn’t what I expected! So yeah, I put up a poll and then completely disregarded the results.

(I later did the same thing with Wars, though I got some VERY good feedback! While I’m not gonna go with any of the original poll options, I am taking your critique and suggestions into account! You all have such amazing things to say!)

I’m pretty proud of what I’ve got for Aquili designs and lore! While you can definitely still see the Luca influence, I’m a lot happier with it! I’ve been working on a full design post, with lore and drawings of other Aquili. Aryll and Grandma and agh!! I’m excited. I’ll continue working on it when classes stop being so hectic!

Name: Hisuian Qwilfish

Debut: Pokémon Legends: Arceus

I for one really loved Legends: Arceus, and a big part of that is the attention it gives to previously overlooked or conceptually underdeveloped Pokémon. From Stantler and the Ursaring line to Basculin of all things?? I can confidently say I never expected Basculin to get any further attention from Game Freak but by god they did, and Basculegion is definitely one of my favorite additions that came from the whole generation. But we’re not talking about Basculin or Basculegion today. No, instead we’re talking about another famously neglected grumpy little one-stage fish.

I think I’m with most of the fandom when I say I never really paid all that much mind to Qwilfish. I feel like it was even a bit of an in-joke that it’s like, completely inoffensive and unremarkable, which is probably precisely why Game Freak decided to give it the treatment it did. Hisuian Qwilfish plays well the part of a regional variant by adding a bit of unique flavor to the design while also retaining the charm points of the original, namely the sharply angled semicircular eyes (albeit no longer cock-eyed) and cute pouty fishy lips.

Its black and purple color scheme is owed to its new typing, dark/poison instead of water/poison. I always like it when sea animal Pokémon are allowed to not be water type. The bright purple accents really pop against the black and I especially love the little bags under the eyes. I think my favorite detail has to be the little lowercase q on the tail. It’s subtle enough that it doesn’t feel too inorganic and I just think it’s really cute! Now they could have just stopped at a fun new regional variant and called it a day, but there’s a bit more in store for our pufferfish friend…

Name: Overqwil

Debut: Pokémon Legends: Arceus

That’s right! A Qwilfish evolution, and not two decades too late. Now, on the one hand, part of me misses when Pokémon could just add on to evolution lines without the pretense of a regional variant, but on the other hand I know that, at least in the case of Qwilfish, it opens more creative doors to do it this way. I’m not sure I would have liked a straight up-and-down evolution of Qwilfish as much as I like Overqwil with its Hisuian design elements!

Anyway, overall, Overqwil is a bit of a mixed bag to me. I kind of wish the facial proportions remained the same instead of the lips getting so much bigger, but that’s a pretty minor gripe. What bugs me more is the spines. While I am a fan of the oozing toxic goo look… they’re huge!! I suppose it is called Overqwil, but… agh I dunno they’re just a lot is all. My favorite detail is probably that it now has a capital Q on its tail! What a q-t idea!

While I may have my nitpicks about Overqwil, it really is so cool that even a Pokémon as unassuming as Qwilfish still has a chance at being given a breath of fresh air like this, and I think the fact that every Qwilfish fan I’ve heard from was pretty much totally in love with these two new additions to the family is really all that matters at the end of the day.

Redesigns book covers that are based off the movie version of the book in her spare time. The hero we deserve

Loves old Arabic love poems but can't read fus-ha/فسحى very well, so she tends to misinterpret some words or meanings and reimagine them in her own way, scribbling out vague shapes or adding splotches of paint to get her interpretation out on paper, or using them as prompts for her writing

Has crooked teeth!! She tends to cover them up in the headspace, but when she's on her own in her room you can see them. I also like to give her hyperpigmentation around her eyes (usually covers it with makeup, but lately has been incorporating it in her eyeshadow designs)

Also lots of scars. She could cover those up too, but she wears them with pride

I think both Roman and Remus have a different relationship with the headspace than the others- I like to think of the imagination as its own separate sentient being that the twins have heavy influence over, but can't fully control

Practices henna designs on the others for fun, over time she does unique designs for each of them rather than just traditional henna (Virgil thinks the intricate spiderwebs rolling down their arms are cool as fuck)

Had a bit of a crisis w her hair- hated it short before her egg cracked (but tried to stow away those feelings), tried to grow it out after coming out but still feeling like it looked wrong, and eventually feeling more comfortable w herself and cutting her hair short again, feeling more like herself this time :3

Early drafts are both her favorite and least favorite part of the creation process. Since no one's going to see them, she can just let herself go, but when the words or colors don't quite convey what's inside her she gets frustrated

Has to always be moving in some way- pacing, fidgeting, legs rocking. Patton makes her a fidget bracelet and it helps her a ton

Romanticises cooking together and the general kitchen experience but is truly so so so bad at it. She's the "making breakfast for my beautiful wife <3" "who tf is burning down my kitchen"

I also rlly enjoy genderfluid Roman!! Wears different earrings depending on how she's feeling gender-wise that day <33
