Jughead could take a punch and keep talking with a level head.

That didn't mean Sweetpea would let him.

When Sweetpea snapped and pushed past even Jughead's attempts at stopping him, it caught Toni and Fang's attention. Sweetpea had never been one to intervene in someone else's business. He was always there as backup if things went wrong, and would step in if things got dangerous, but when Toni or Fangs stood up to someone, Sweetpea had always stood to the side with the widest, proudest big brother smirk on his face. So watching the way that Sweetpea not only inserted himself into the show down, but also put himself between the other two boys in a way that was absolutely protective of Jughead? It was a dead giveaway.

It was Archie who managed to calm everyone down that time - for once. Fangs and Toni were too busy looking at each other with wide eyes and timid smiles to really pay attention though. If they were needed, they would interject. The prospect of Sweetpea being so protective of Jughead was too distracting to engage in a fight that would probably happen again a few hours later anyway.

The next time the something between Sweetpea and Jughead showed itself, it was in a quiet moment. They had just taken a hard hit and had been trying to keep it together while people were watching... now they were all huddled in Jughead's trailer. Toni leaned against the wall, arms crossed over her chest as she looked at her feet. Next to her, Fangs sat on the ground with his legs pulled up, arms dangling as they rested on his knees. Jughead was on the couch, head in hands, and Sweetpea sat near him on the arm of the same couch. After a second, Jughead looked at at his friends and then took a deep breath. He stood to his feet without saying anything, his hand resting on Sweetpea's shoulder. The two boys looked at each other and nodded without smiling.

Their eyes lingered though, and Jughead's hand stayed a little too long on Sweetpea's shoulder. Much longer than when Jughead helped Fangs to his feet or he reached out to touch Toni's wrist. The second he gathered the other two, he was right back at Sweetpea's side again, and this time it seemed... odd. He had to move back across the room to stand by the taller Serpent, and it was so unnecessary when he could have just stayed by Toni like he had plenty of times before. The way Jughead moved, too: slow and random. Like he was gravitating toward Sweetpea without realizing, instead of moving to him on purpose. It made Toni and Fangs look to each other, wondering if the other could see what they did.

Things got serious when the touchiness started up. It was initiated by Jughead, who was vaguely touchy with everyone around him. This wasn't so much like the way he was with Sweetpea though, and that became obvious when Jughead would just randomly reach out and brush the back of his fingers against some part of Sweet Pea. He'd reach out - again slow, distracted, like it was more habit than anything - and graze his fingers across the back of Sweet Pea's shoulder. It was light enough that Sweet Pea's leather Serpent jacket would hide it. It didn't seem like Jughead was doing it consciously, or that Sweetpea even noticed. He would just reach out as he passed the taller Serpent, Jug's eyes focused on something else entirely as his fingers ran over the leather. Sometimes it would be while Sweetpea was crouched down and Jughead stood over him, both discussing plans as Jughead's hand went gently back and forth over Sweetpea's shoulders.

Jughead was in Pops diner writing away on his laptop as Sweetpea and the gang walked in, they caught eyes and came over to his table. Plopping down, Toni ordered a plate of fries for everyone.

Sweetpea had his face in his phone. Fangs was asking Jughead about what he was writing. Small conversations going on.

Jug put his laptop away while everyone started eating the plate of fries, Toni kept whispering to Pea and he was shooting her daggers.

“You coming to the bar tonight?” Fangs asked Jug while he was sipping his coffee. He nodded and while the conversation was going on Sweetpea was staring at his phone. Not eating nothing.

Jughead noticed this and tried conversing with the tall one.

“Did you guys hear about the Reggie and Archie? They’ve been dating for two months. I’m obsessed with it.” Fangs rambled on about the two. Eventually Toni and Fangs left, heading to the bar, leaving Jug and Pea alone, well along with the 5 other people in the diner.

“You we’re silent the whole time, what’s on your mind?” Jughead hesitated asking, while sipping his coffee, before crossing his arms over his chest, analyzing the man in front of him.

Peas eyes arched and he placed his phone down, “I don’t really like you Jug, I mean I do, but sometimes i don’t.” be vacillated. Jug smiled.

“I’m very aware you’re a closed off book, I’m very aware you hide from everyone and you don’t like me most days. I know I was a jerk in high school. I’m not who I was in high school.” He reassured.

“You’re right, i’m closed off. With good reason, please don’t ask me weird questions now. Like you did the other night.” Remembering three nights ago when Jughead was begging Sweets to reveal his middle name.

“You’re like a really good book. A really good book I don’t finish. One that keeps me going but you can’t finish. Every time I read it I notice new things I missed before. I never wanna put you down.” He spilled before realizing what he said. Embarrassed washed over him and he stifled a cough before making eye contact again.

Sweetpea smiled and offered his hand to the guy across the table. Flattered, he rubbed his thumb over Jugheads hand, “Maybe one day I’ll open up the way you need me to, but right now, these steps are what i’m taking.”

“Deal.”
