something i've noticed some people don't understand about Half-Life 2 is why Kleiner gave Gordon the HEV suit if he was supposed to simply get teleported to Eli's lab and go back to doing science.

the answer is rather simple: the G-Man did it.

something that the G-Man says during his ending speech in Half-Life: "I've taken the liberty of relieving you of your weapons. Most of them were government property. As for the suit, I think you've earned it."

the G-Man, throughout the entire story, Never lies. he omits some details, yes, but it's never a flat out lie.

later, in Episode 2, the G-Man admits to Gordon that he wishes he could provide him with more direct assistance, but that his employers forbid him from doing so. this is understandable, as Gordon is an agent working under him now.

moreover, considering the G-Man's powers of influence and time manipulation and/or prediction, we can conclude that he knew the suit would be useless due to a lack of readily available energy sources in the post Combine takeover world.

keeping all of this in mind, we reach the conclusion that the G-Man brought the suit to Kleiner and influenced him into upgrading it so it could utilize the Combine's power sources and then give it to Gordon as soon as he could.

man just cannot lie and found a way to cheat and help Gordon somehow.

Natsu Harem: Fairy GET! 3/14

Who next~...? Ah, yes. (人◕ω◕)

A childhood sweetheart, Miss Lisanna Strauss. (人◕ω◕)

When did they meet?

Among Fairy Tail's current generation, they all arrived at the guild in the mid- to late X770's. For the most part. Natsu arrived in X777, and the Strauss Siblings came to be part of the family in X778.

Whereas Natsu grew leery and terrified of Lisanna's older sister, he forged a special bond with Lisanna as kids. (人◕ω◕)

Happy's egg fell from the sky, and Natsu found the thing, determined to hatch it, believing it to be a dragon egg. (人◕ω◕) Naturally, Lisanna-chan invited herself along to help care for it... And act as a sort of mommy to Happy when he did hatch. Happy might not have been the dragon Natsu wanted, but soon enough they all became one happy family~.... For the most part. (人◕ω◕) ... Lisanna-chan did get these weird ideas into her head sometimes, as noted by Natsu's reactions above.

As a young boy, Natsu didn't always appreciate Lisanna, at least on the surface. Yet even so, he did love her in his own way. She became a precious friend, much easier to get along with than that blockhead Stripper and pole-up-her-butt Erza. Sometimes they went out on jobs together. Sometimes they just camped out together with Gildarts and Happy.

Until that fateful mission for the Strauss Siblings... all was well. But when it did arrive, and Elfman lost control, he wound up... killing Lisanna. Or so they all thought. Elfman and Mirajane were both devastated as Lisanna died in their arms... Elfman resolving to never use his Takeover again - too scared of losing control. And Mira just... lost her powers. Relegated to being a barmaid and becoming a much kinder, gentler person that more openly treasured her friends and family in the guild.

Meanwhile the Earthland Lisanna was sent to Edolas, unbeknownst to everyone... The Edolas Lisanna had already died on a job, and that's who perished in Mira and Elfman's arms. But for the Lisanna that Natsu and everyone else knew... She was seemingly trapped in Edolas forever, no idea of how to get back. So Lisanna made the best of her situation, bonding with the Edolas Fairy Tail.

And then through a miracle, Lisanna-chan returned to Earthland with everyone after the Edolas debacle concluded. She hadn't seen her family and friends in Fairy Tail for a few years, and while she felt terrible about leaving her Edolas siblings without their sister... Lisanna was glad to be home. She was welcomed back with open arms... And soon enough the S-Class trials were upon them, then the Tenrou Island team missed out on seven years because of Fairy Sphere protecting them...

When did they grow closer?

This is a little trickier question. (人◕ω◕) From X778-782 when Lisanna "died", she and Natsu became quite close. But then coming back in X784... she didn't get as much on-screen time with Natsu. In a subtle way, their friendship seemed to have taken a hit, at least with Lisanna not joining Team Natsu, not even on the occasional job.

... But I have my theories that despite what we were shown, Natsu and Lisanna's bond was as strong as ever. (人◕ω◕) Returning home after 2 years, Lisanna had a lot of catching up to do with everyone, especially her siblings... Team Natsu was always on to the next adventure, and Lisanna-chan couldn't focus on them exclusively... But even so~...

Natsu was still special to Lisanna. (人◕ω◕) She picked up on Erza's dancing habits, spinning Natsu around. And she remembered having ideas of marriage with Natsu, as evidenced by that moment during the Grand Magic Games~...

... Not to mention that jail cell scene in Tartaros. (人◕ω◕) Natsu's only shared a cell with one other girl in Fairy Tail... But more on that one later.

The point I'm laboring toward is that despite what we see in the main series, there was plenty of room for Lisanna to come trodding back into Natsu's life at any point after returning. The S-Class trials did happen, and they were technically rivals then... But they had different opponents during that arc, and there was a lot going on. Then they missed out on seven more years. Once that blew over, I'm sure they shared some time together, whether or not Lisanna also spent time with Team Natsu.

At some point she must've found out that Natsu erected a grave for her at the spot they helped hatch Happy together in a hut... Lisanna might've felt bad for worrying him like that, for worrying everyone. But even so, she's not gonna let them treat her like glass. She's strong in her own right, and Lisanna wants to protect everyone, too~... So like her sister Mira, most of her time with Natsu is spent with him when he gets back from jobs, catching up with him and rekindling that bond of theirs~... It's not that hard. (人◕ω◕)

When does friendship turn to something more?

The answer is anytime, really. (❋•‿•❋) However, if I had to take a stab at a more concrete time... I'd say when Igneel died. Remember what I said about making this series having fanfic in its veins...? Well, it begins to kick in now. One thing that's always rubbed me the wrong way about everyone splitting off after Tartaros is that some people never seemed to try harder to stay in touch with certain others. In this case... Lisanna and Natsu. Sure, Natsu had training on the brain... And Lisanna was there when Makarov disbanded the guild.

... But Lisanna knew the dragons perished. She knew how much Igneel meant to Natsu. Lisanna would have been among the first to track Natsu down and give him comfort. She was one of Natsu's first serious friends, and she wouldn't have wanted Natsu to be alone after losing the father he tried finding all of this time. Naturally, Natsu would be dragged along with the Strauss Siblings during this year-long guild hiatus. Because Lisanna-chan isn't the greedy type to hoard Natsu for herself. ... Unlike certain others. (❋•‿•❋)

Natsu, Lisanna, Elfman, and Mira could get strong together. Although Elfman miiight be a little defensive of the Dragon Slayer getting a little too intimate with his sisters. (❋•‿•❋) But it's not like he can say "no" to Lisanna, who wants to cuddle with her Pyro~... In this time together, he could hear about what the siblings went through during the Tartaros arc. While Natsu might punch Elfman or something to that effect for choking Lisanna, he'd know that it wasn't Elfman's fault, and the guy was feeling bad enough for all four of them, especially after he blew up the guildhall.

Natsu would also hear about Fairy Tail disbanding... And train that much harder so they could all come back together a year later. (❋•‿•❋) But in terms of him and Lisanna.... This year together is an excellent period for them to become a couple. They'd have Mira's blessing. ... And a little more, but we'll hear about Mira-chan later. (❋•‿•❋)

Even though Natsu's instincts are to protect Lisanna, he knows she's strong enough to stand on her own and have his back. Happy still views her as a Mommy, too. (❋•‿•❋) And after Alvarez blows over... Perhaps Lisanna-chan makes good on that childhood dream of tying the knot with her dense Pyro. \(❋•‿•❋)/ She does have to work that much harder to get him to understand romance, but I feel after a while Natsu would mature in his own way and roll with the dates and eventual marriage scene.

... Not to mention the eventual "mating like rabbits" scene. (❋•‿•❋) Lisanna is Mira-chan's darling sister, after all~... She's petite. But she also has L E G S~... \(❋•‿•❋)/

Businessman Joe Lonsdale said Saturday on CNN’s “Smerconish” that he believed there is “clearly weaponization” of  the Justice Department against former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Anchor Michael Smerconish said, “My next guest co-authored this Wall Street Journal op-ed with Jeb Bush under the heading, Elon Musk and Donald Trump Cases Imperil the Rule of Law.”

He asked, “I’m curious your co-author, Jeb Bush is no fan of Donald Trump. Why did he feel compelled to weigh in on this?”

Lonsdale said, “I’ve never given Donald Trump a cent either. I love America. I’ve been a lot of businesses in this country. I love building, love investing here. And this is very scary. I see the government weaponized against my friend Elon Musk. Listen, I don’t love Donald Trump, but I was just with a bunch of my business friends who don’t love them either. All of them thanked me for writing this.”

He continued, “I don’t think Trump necessarily handled this perfectly. It’s not a $400,000,000 fine. It’s like basically what happens in these countries when you have a regime takeover that’s going after its enemies, as you weaponize it and you penalize people in ridiculous ways. This is an obvious example of that. This is why it’s scary to my friends who do business, who don’t even like Trump because it’s a $400,000,000 fine for something where there’s no victims is obviously a weaponization of government and everyone knows on its face. ”

Season 4 Episode 2 No Album Release (Read More) Game Over (JP Version) - Kirby's Dream Land 3

I feel like its hard to overstate just how much people fell in love with Mariya Takeuchi in 2019. Her introduction to the King for Another Day Tournament to me initially left me scratching my head, because it seemed to be referencing a part of YouTube's algorithm of recommended videos that I had personally never encountered. Nevertheless, I saw a lot of people happy with her inclusion, and just sort of shrugged and kept watching the SiIva Direct in which she was unveiled. That complete apathy toward her inclusion persisted for me, and likely many others, until we got a tease of her full powers in the final SiIva Direct, held on the 21st of September leading up to the Tournament's premiere (hey, September! Remember that?). Aside from that one arrangement, we'd be teased with the introduction of character mash-up rips through one with Mariya herself in it - The Whims of Plastic Love. The rip positively exploded when it was uploaded on its own two months later, and it to me marked the point when Mariya Takeuchi's popularity in the tournament truly spiked.

The year therafter, the tournament had long since concluded, and we were all waiting for DJ Professor K's takeover event to begin. We all knew the results, and at least personally I'd finally accepted that the tournament would only have one winner. Yet we all still loved all the contestants - their impact hadn't gone away just from not reaching first place. And so, it didn't take long for rips like Plastic Love of the Stars to become appearing - rips that reminded us that these contestants were now forever part of SiIva's legacy, even if they wouldn't get a day to themselves.

Keep in mind, this was long before 11 Minutes of City Pop, and long before the DJ Professor K takeover itself would remind of us just how much the team also loved all of the tournament's contestants, with rips like Agent H (HOBaRT the Funny Mixer Theme). So really, it was stuff like Plastic Love of the Stars that sort of stealth-started the celebrations that were to come later in the year, bringing everyone together after all those months of excitement in the year that had just passed.

It helps, of course, that Plastic Love of the Stars is a fucking banger of an arrangement! It follows suit with rips like Aquadial or Beyond the Floating Isles, where it truly is just as simple as the ripper wanting to explore the unique soundscapes that Kirby games feature by arranging another song in it, and like those two the picks suit the Kirby game in question damn near perfectly. Kirby's Dream Land 3 in particular, much like Kirby 64, sounds completely unlike anything else out there, and is probably my personal favorite Kirby soundtrack out there? It's the equivalent of listening to pastel colors, and that relaxing cheerfulness paired with the enchantingly deep bassline suits Plastic Love like a glove. It came as no surprise to learn that Pinci is a guest contributor who otherwise has a career in making remixes and rearrangements with the SNES sound in particular - the guy's work is absolutely incredible, and his range of coverage for Kirby in particular is fantastic. Please check this rip out, and when you're done, check out his YouTube channel - his arrangement of Door into Summer from Knuckles' Chaotix has been stuck in my head all day.

The Kaiba mansion was unusually silent that night. Though the largeness of the property would easily lead anyone into assuming that such a place could only be a noiseless one, the upkeep of an estate of such dimensions required the almost permanent presence of domestic workers. The sight of them in hallways and rooms was, therefore, not a rare one. But given the recent events, their number had drastically dwindled these last days.

It was well past 11pm by the time Seto began to make his way to his room; heavy steps resounding upon the marble floor. Between the forceful exit of the executives who had sided with Industrial Illusions and the meticulous selection process of adequate replacements, coupled with the firing of a large part of the mansion's staff and the arduous task of restoring both his image and position at Kaiba Corporation after months-long absence, his schedule had become even more unforgiving than usual. The company's shareholders, still reeling over the monetary loses brought by the plummeting of the corporation's stock price, looked at him with mistrust. A fleeting inconvenience. They would regret the very moment they dared to doubt him once he concluded his latest project. His duel disk was certain to revolutionize Duel Monsters in a way that had never been seen before. The financial consequences of his defeat against Yūgi and Pegasus' failed attempt at a takeover would be nothing in comparison to the massive success that was bound to make Kaiba Corporation an unmatched presence around the world.

An abrupt sound, one which originated from one of the rooms and echoed through the hallway, disrupted the silence and brought present thoughts to a sudden end. His steps came to a halt, eyes narrowing upon realizing that what he had just heard had been a scream that came from Mokuba's bedroom. Without a second thought, he turned towards his brother's door, throwing it open with a quick movement of his arm.

❛ Mokuba ? ❜ The name escaped his lips as soon as he stepped into the room, the tone of his voice betraying urgency. A rapid scan of the space revealed nothing out of place, besides the fact that the younger Kaiba, who should be sleeping at this hour, was currently sitting on the bed. Mokuba's small silhouette was visible against the faint moonlight that peeked through curtains near the bedside, but his features were obscured from view. As a result, Seto's hand reached for the nearest light switch; the brightness of the overhead light coming to life within a second.

Blue eyes never left the younger Kaiba as Seto approached the bed, in search for any sign of physical injury. Mokuba appeared to be frozen in place, his hands tightly grasping the Blue Eyes White Dragon plushie that he always slept with. But, despite this and his labored breath, the boy appeared unharmed.

A nightmare ?

❛ What's wrong ? ❜ His gaze remained fixed upon Mokuba's countenance as he spoke. The circumstances seemed to paint an easily decipherable picture of what had transpired, but the question was posed, nonetheless.

Telecom merger would not result in materially higher prices, tribunal said.

The federal Competition Bureau is appealing the Competition Tribunal's dismissal of its case against Rogers Communications Inc.'s $26-billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc., the companies said as they expressed their disappointment in the move.

The telecommunications companies said Friday that they were informed of the bureau's intent to appeal the tribunal's decision, released late Thursday. They said they were also told that the bureau will apply for an injunction to block the deal from closing until an appeal is heard.

"We are deeply disappointed that the Commissioner continues to attempt to deny Canada and Canadians the advantages that will come from these proposed transactions," the companies said in a joint statement. [...]

It concluded that the merger was not likely to result in higher prices for wireless customers in Western Canada and that the tribunal was satisfied the plan to sell Shaw's Freedom Mobile to Quebecor Inc.'s Videotron was adequate to ensure competition isn't substantially reduced.

Quebecor agreed to buy Freedom Mobile in a $2.85-billion deal earlier this year.

The tribunal's decision cleared a path for the deal to go ahead, requiring only approval from federal Innovation, Science and Industry Minster Francois-Philippe Champagne. [...]

ok so i have a reputation for long winded yaps but i have utterly outdone myself this week

the good: i've been writing. a lot.

the bad: it's not Hostile Takeover

the ugly: it's nuzi :]

really, the real problem is wasn't trying to write something new at all. i had a lil plot bunny, and i was just going to summarize it for some friends on discord.

so i sat down, thought i'd spend on hour or two writing up an explanation, the broad strokes outline, and share it with them.

i ended up writing all evening without finishing. then went back the next day, wrote all evening, again without finishing. next day it was my friends birthday, so i was out of the house. but i came back with a vengence and spent all day writing ten thousand words (!). oh, did you think i'd finish? haha. came back the next day, still not done. on the fifth day, i was sure it would conclude. i got right up to the end, and it took till today to finally finish up the epilogue-y bits.

now i just need to proofread and maybe tweak some things.

and hope my friends won't kill me for making them readin 35k of brain dump.

anyway. i genuinely have no idea what to do?

because like. this is not written with the fidelity of my usual writing. it is a summary, a sketch, a rough draft. the "finished" version of this fic could easily exceed 100k words.

and like. i'm tired boss. i don't feel like writing another Hostile Takeover. and i'm not sure i can even commit to that, and not just slowly stop writing halfway through like with everything i've tried.

(and this would be a terrible story to die halfway through — i call it nuzi, but there are some big twists and if i don't get to them i'll explode. it takes a while, but believe me, you'd understand why i would write this >:3)

i don't even know if want to put that much effort into it. i like it, but do i like it enough to devote months to it? not sure.

but it is pretty good, if you trust me saying so. some of the sections already hit pretty hard. i kind of think i ought to share this with people, whatever state it ultimately ends up in.

but i don't know.

is anyone interested in reading this and giving feedback maybe?

Private Sector Good, Public Sector Bad? (2)

This is the second part of a look at former public services and utilities in Britain that have been privatised in the name of neoliberal economics and the mistaken belief that private enterprise is ALWAYS more efficient than publicly  run bodies.

Prisons

The first privately run prison in the UK was opened in 1992 under a Conservative government and private sector involvement in Britain’s penal system has grown steadily ever since. The UK is now second only to the USA in the number of privately run prisons.

Premier Custodial Group was formed in 1992 and in 2005 was the largest private company running UK prisons. It was a joint venture between the American private prison operator Wackenhut Corrections Corporation and the British firm Serco PLC. From a turnover of £7.52 million in 1994 it had increased its revenues to £127.4m, with pre-tax profits of nearly £10m, paying out a £2m dividend to shareholders. In 2002 Wackenhut was taken over by Group 4 Falck.

In 2003 Serco gained control of Premier, estimating that Premier's

 “income over the life of its existing contracts for five prisons, one secure training centre, two immigration facilities and court escort custody and electronic monitoring services was £2bn” (Cited in Prison Reform Trust: Private Punishment :Who Profits; January 2005)

Group 4 Securicor (G4S) was a company created in 2004 when Group 4 acquired Securicor. Since these takeovers these companies have gone from strength to strength, with Serco, G4S, and GEO Group branching into immigration and other services.

In 2018, the Guardian reported that the Home Office paid these companies:

 “hundreds of millions of pounds to run the UK’s immigration removal centres, but no one knows for certain just how profitable the industry is…Commercial confidentiality agreements mean the Home Office and outsourcing companies are not obliged to publish detailed financial information about immigration detention centres in the UK.” (Guardian: 10/10/22)

In 2022, one of these companies, Sodexo was awarded a £264 million UK prison contract over a ten year period. On receiving the contract, Paul Anstey, CEO, Government, Sodexo UK & Ireland stated:

“Our vision is to provide a secure and safe environment which reduces re-offending through education, builds new skills and offers respect, equality and inclusion.” (Facilities Management Magazine: 16/08/22)

If only that were true! As long ago as 2013 Sodexo Justice Services  was facing charges of prisoner torture and degradation.

'Cruel, inhumane and degrading': Female prisoner kept segregated in 'squalid' cell for five years.”  (Independent: 21/08/2013)

In 2016 a video of naked Prisoners pretending to be dogs led to an investigation into violence and humiliation of prisoners by Sodexo. In September 2017, a female prisoner died under Sodexo care. An inquest into her death concluded:

“serious failures at Sodexo run HMP Peterborough contributed to death of Annabella Landsberg”  (Inquest: 04/04/2019)

Another prison run by Sodexo was accused of residing over a “spice” epidemic, which led to the death of a male prisoner. (Manchester Evening News) In 2018 Sodexo was again accused of neglect and systematic failures resulting in the death of yet another inmate. In 2019, a different prison run by Sodexo was accused of “systemic breaches of inmate human rights”.

In February of this year 20 prison staff resigned from the Sodexo run HMP Lowdham Grange, which was deemed so unsafe the government was forced to take it over.

The appalling levels of service cited above are not restricted to Sodexo alone. In her book “Profiting from their misery: Britain’s private prisons”, Hatty Nestor reveals that:

“outsourcing companies like G4S encourage prisoners to work 40-hour weeks, all they are paid (is)  as little as £2 an hour. Such practices amount to slave labour. Companies are profiting from prison labour, paying fewer well-trained, low staff wages. In private prisons, staff are paid 23% less than public prisons, and they also outsource security, healthcare and cheap food. Private prisons aim for a profit margin of 8-10%, which is met by cutting costs and the increased exploitation of staff and inmates.”

Given that privately run prisons pay their staff less, are more overcrowded, and employ fewer prison officers you would think they would at least be more cost effective yet this isn’t the case. The governments own figures for 2022/23 reveal that it cost £32,762 per prisoner, per year in publicly run prisons, while the cost for privately run prisons was £33,628 per prisoner. (Ministry of Justice: “Costs per place and cost per prisoner by individual prison.", 21/0324)

 What is more, the government gives 23% of its allocated budget to private companies despite the fact their prisons only house 15% of the total prison population. It seems that whichever way you measure private prison success (apart form profits for its shareholders) private prisons do far worse than those still in the public sector.
