i don't really ever promote my fics from ao3 over here anymore because it somehow feels the same as when i bring essays home to grade on the weekend and my husband is like ugh whyyyy. but some of you are here because of my wee fandom days in marauders hell (before i deleted everything i wrote because i was being literally hunted by someone in the fandom hahahah i wish i was kidding). and i'd like to personally tell you lovely people that i've spiralled back down into the deep pit and have posted a few new things.

it's scary to post something "different"...but the SW prequels and HP marauders just feel like cuts from the same cloth to me. sad dead parents and misunderstandings and sacrifices and leftover guardians. but also — brilliant friendships, sharp wit, epic mischief, awkward flirting. maybe it's your cuppa tea, maybe not.

Draco may be a better flyer than Harry

Blog post from my HP fandom soulmate, Chicory. She made an interesting observation about Draco that I want to share.

In a matter of seconds, Malfoy was streaking out of the sky on Harry’s left, a green and silver blur lying flat on his broom … The Snitch skirted the foot of one of the goalhoops and scooted off towards the other side of the stands; its change of direction suited Malfoy, who was nearer; Harry pulled his Firebolt around, he and Malfoy were now neck and neck … Feet from the ground, Harry lifted his right hand from his broom, stretching towards the Snitch … to his right, Malfoy’s arm extended too, was reaching, groping … It was over in two breathless, desperate, windswept seconds – Harry’s fingers closed around the tiny, struggling ball – Malfoy’s fingernails scrabbled the back of Harry’s hand hopelessly –

Usually, when I read fanfics, especially Drarry fanfics in the distant past, authors paint Draco as the inferior flyer to Harry. In Slytherin!Harry fics, Draco even admits Harry is better than him and often readily gives his position as seeker to Harry.

But is this true??

From Book 1, Draco obviously has a great love for quidditch. He was the one to introduce Harry to the sport in the robe shop. And he was shown to be a competent flyer in that same book.

The issue is that we will never truly know if Harry is a better flyer than Draco because JKR always ensures her darling protag has the best broom. And when Draco is the one with the better broom in book 2, Draco, being a complete idiotic dork, has a disgraceful loss. Draco should have won that match. Just like how the Slytherin team should have won the finals in book 3. But instead of the Gryffindor team truly earning it, JKR decided to have the Slytherin team act like fools for no reason. On top of giving Harry the best broom. The Gryffindors are jokes. JKR is a joke.

Then in book 3, Harry gets his firebolt, a top-of-the-line broom, and remains the player with the best broom for the rest of the series. And for some reason, Draco, who is supposed to have parents who spoil him and a dad who allegedly bribed the Slytherin team in book 2, never gets an upgraded broom?? I would like to know why Draco did not get a new broom, JKR. What's the point of being a rich brat if daddy is not buying you the best broom??

Anyway, in book 5 Draco can keep up with Harry in the last moments of the match despite having a lesser broom. Harry did not win because he was a better flyer. He won because he had a better broom.

Harry is the best seeker just because. Harry's quidditch skills are the first of many abilities JKR gives Harry just because. So many times Harry just has a 'feeling' and then knows exactly what to do (cough***deus ex machina***cough) without earning it.

Harry knew, somehow, what to do. He leant forward and grasped the broom tightly in both hands and it shot towards Malfoy like a javelin.

If Harry is the best, why does JKR feel the need to always give Harry the best broom? Or reduce the brain cells of his opponent? Just food for thought. I still wonder what Draco could have been in the hands of a better author.

…Wow. This really should be on Rowling's lawyer team's radar, i hope they're made aware of this somehow. Let's go over this then, since the poster conveniently blocked me and i can't respond directly.

First of all, a general "how to read information" tip: you'll notice that there's no trace of the actual radio interview this sentence is mentioned to come from, to fact check it. That means no context surrounding that one sentence is available. The only thing we have is the reported interview (here, if you're interested by actual links instead of screenshots). It may not seem important, but this is already a subtly biased way of providing information.

Now let's look at what's actually being said here. Praising the quality of writing of Nabokov is, obviously, not the same as calling the actual relationship depicted in Lolita "a great love story", unless you're being intellectually dishonest on purpose. There is no doubt in Lolita that Humbert, the protagonist, thinks of himself as being in love with Dolores, and it is that perspective that makes it such an interesting and layered novel. It's a story that makes you empathise with a despicable man in spite of yourself, which speaks of Nabokov's genius.

The fact that we even have to explain this is grotesque; JKR has time and time again proven that she's a defender of children's rights and safety, recently most of all (it's one of the reasons she invoked for standing up to transgenderism) but also continuously in the past. But of course, people who make such accusations rely on forcing their target to defend themselves, because it's psychological warfare. On top of the distress it causes, the aim of defaming is to seed doubts in the minds of onlookers, so that even if the accusation doesn't stick legally the damage is done.

In addition, i will say that this poster calling JK Rowling a pedophile (or heavily implying she might be and doubling over when called out on her bullshit) right at the time JKR's published a book where the main topic is denouncing pedophilia and coercive rape in a cult is… uncanny, to say the least. I wouldn't usually throw that out lightly but the timeline is pretty suspect. At best this is an unfortunate coincidence, she's just an idiot who has a bit of subconscious guilt about the kind of fanfiction she consumes, and is redirecting it at Rowling. At worst… well.

On a lighter note, the influence of Nabokov's writing on Rowling's has been studied before, if you're interested. Here's an example of what has been written on it (i don't particularly like this blog's author but there's no denying the depth of his analysis here).

It's interesting how, these days, if you state an opinion, you almost automatically get labelled. Apparently I'm a dehumanising something or other trying to eliminate people. Simply bc I refuse to accept being called cis woman. No real reason, just that they seem to disagree with my opinion. And they think if they keep calling me names, that will resolve something, somehow. No actual real reason as to why I am "dehumanising". I'm just supposed to accept it and shut up. Fuck that. Not any more. I'm fighting back now. I'm not dehumanising anybody: I'm simply stating my opinion, which I am entitled to do.

I simply refuse to be called a cis-woman. IMO transgender people have mental health problems that should be addressed prior to gender reassignment [especially if they are not adults]. The harkles are a pair of self-centred, hypocritical, attention-seeking narcissists who should be stripped of their titles and ignored. So go for your life, transgender ITs and team Sussex. 🖕🖕🖕let loose with your pointless name calling. For it to bother me, I first have to be concerned about your opinion. And believe me, I'm not.
