I loved that line delivery

okay THANK you for pointing out the weird flow and syntax of 'we're gonna sunder you' like I keep see it getting thrown around as a badass moment and it's always just scanned so strangely to me. I can easily think of 5 more badass lines/moments from Imogen. It's an improvised form, so not every delivery is gonna be perfect, but people truly lost their minds for that despite there being so many better options
Thanks! Yeah...this is super, super, speculative, like, I cannot stress enough how subjective and speculative it is, but there were a couple of other really weird lines from other characters during the retrieving Laudna arc (the one I recall was Orym's "plume of goodness" line; ironically the "whatever hole she's leaving" line in the resurrection does actually fit into Imogen's diction but its sophomoric humor potential has not been realized within the fandom, which is a mistake). I have to wonder if it was sort of a realization for Matt and the cast of how little time Bells Hells had had to like...settle and bond. We had this massive dramatic setpiece of an early death with a serious risk of becoming permanent and it felt like it was hard for a good number of the characters to properly pivot to the roleplay in a way that felt natural. Compared to how gutting and real the aftermath of Molly's death felt for the Nein, it just felt odd and not quite realized.
It also felt like, and this is probably more because we just finally got out of the endless Treshi stuff, that the campaign finally began to hit some form of stride immediately after that arc. Like, it took until the solstice to really get there, but while I'm a completist by nature and there's plenty of great individual moments in the earlier episodes that you'd miss, my advice to someone who fell off Campaign 3 early and is now getting interested again but doesn't have the time to watch everything would be to read Dani's summaries up through at least episode 34, optionally read them through episode 38 unless they really want to see the Vox Machina appearances, and start in on episode 39. While there's still a few lore dumps to go, the Gorgynei, Yios, Feywild, and long skyship travel scenes all provide much more room for the characters to finally breathe and interact and make their own choices, and then the party split arcs are genuinely both great.
Getting back to the original point, yeah it's not a great line, though Imogen actually doing said sundering of the tree is a great moment.

We lie awake in love and fear pt. 2
MASTERLIST
From a @lilacmermaid25 prompt - Rebecca's legs cause Ted's brain to short circuit.
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
The window was wide open, Rebecca could hear the boys shouting and jeering with each other. She continued to work her way through her inbox until she heard Roy call the whistle when she stood and went to stand at the window so she could see them all lined up. They looked so excited to give their gift to Ted. Sam and Isaac led them off - both surprisingly good singers. She giggled at the dance moves. Roy nodded his head in time to the music, she was so proud that he’d managed to arrange the routine. By the time Dani was stepping up for his solo, she was on the verge of tears - the combination of being so very proud of the team, and of the goodbye itself. Dani’s gentle chorus of "Adios" nearly tipped her over the edge and she clutched at the window frame, leaning over for a closer look. Ted and Beard turned to watch Dani join the others in the stands as they reached the finale. She could barely hold herself upright. Then she heard Ted, with a smile in his voice.
"Thank you fellas. That was perfect." She sighed with relief, pulled the window closed and pressed her forehead against the glass. She'd need a very large glass of wine over lunch with her mum, the day was proving just as highly strung as she’d expected. She felt like an acrobat on the highwire just millimeters from a fall.
After their slightly awkward morning, and fortified by the wine at lunchtime, Rebecca braced herself to talk to Ted. She knew realistically that it had to be today, tomorrow was match day and she didn't want it to overshadow the game. She knew he'd sneak off as soon as he could to avoid any prolonged goodbyes, so that left her with now. Right now. She went down to the office, but it was dark and quiet. Only the pink gift bags from Keeley stood out. He'll be in the stands. She knew exactly that that's where he'd be.
"I'm ready to talk now." She stated. And she did. She covered every thought that popped into her head, the schools, the money, selling the club. Threw in a joke about going away to “sleep, drink, fuck.” She poured every ounce of love into what was ultimately a one-sided conversation.
"You liven up the place, Ted. I don't think I can do this without you." A sob rose in her throat. "Believe it or not, I'm not trying to change your mind. I know you have your heart set on this. I just need you to know how I feel." She placed a hand over his, "Would you… would you come back to mine? For a drink?" He shook his head. That final dismissal was almost too much. She nodded in acceptance, not daring to speak any more. Reluctantly, she squeezed his shoulder and left him to his thoughts.
Once again, she found herself in bed with a large glass of wine, still working on the same page of her book as the previous night. Again, she was distracted by the doorbell.
"If that's Beard again…" She mumbled. She checked the app before she bothered moving. Hoping it could be someone she could ignore - an incorrect food delivery or taxi driver. It was Ted, and he appeared to be alone. He had his back to the door, only turning when he heard it open. She wore a pink silk cami and shorts set - no robe this time. No counter to hide her legs.
"Fuck me." He whispered. Rebecca raised an eyebrow in surprise. Well, not quite a surprise given how he’d been looking at her that morning and been trying to hide. "Sorry, Rebecca. I didn't mean to disturb you. I feel bad for how I left things between us earlier tonight. I wanted to apologise." She didn't say anything, offering him the same silent treatment he'd given her. "I'm sorry." He tagged on.
"Would you like a drink?" She asked. He shook his head. "For fucks sake Ted, I know why you're being so… not you. But quite honestly it's giving me the fucking creeps. This odd, emotionless version of you. I don't like it. This isn’t my Te-" she stopped abruptly. Not my Ted - don’t fucking say that, “this isn’t the Ted I know.”
"I'm sorry 'bout that, Rebecca. I'm just tryin’ to get through the next couple of days, that's all. Some big emotions goin’ round the place - the game tomorrow, me leavin’. Feels like we’re all just clinging on like Jack and Rose on that door. I’m just tryin’ to make it through in one piece."
"At what cost, Ted? You’re allowed to be upset for the life you’re leaving behind, you know? You’re allowed to miss us. I can't stand to see you like this. I miss the Ted who finds humour in everything, who is so giving and so caring and so passionate, I miss-" She was cut off unexpectedly with a searing kiss. He'd taken a stride forwards, taken her face into his large hands, and kissed her hard. "I miss you." She trembled. "I'm going to miss you. So much."
"I'm gonna miss you too sweetheart. Gonna miss how riled up you get, gonna miss how when you blush, it starts right here," he placed his hand in the center of her chest, "gonna miss how loudly you roll your eyes. I'm really gonna miss your legs." She shifted closer to him, bringing her hand to his waist. She leaned up to kiss his jawline, keeping her eyes on him. "This really ain't a good idea." He muttered.
“I feel like I should say something about not always getting what you want, but getting what you need?” She muttered against his collarbone. He raised his foot behind him to kick the door shut.
“What if they’re the same thing?” She pulled away from him slightly. “If I’m leaving, I want you to know that I want you and that I need you.” Her eyes filled with unshed tears and she pressed a soft kiss to his lips.
“I wasn’t going to let myself do this. What if it hurts too much when you go?”
“If it was always going to hurt, then doesn’t this make it worth it?” She closed her eyes, resting her head on his shoulder and he swayed her slightly in his arms. After a moment, she looked up.
“Well then I want you too. And I need you more than you could possibly imagine. The trouble is I only have you for a few hours” He smiled sadly,
“I know. Do you want me to leave? I don’t want to make this goodbye any worse.” She shook her head firmly.
“No, I don’t care if it makes it worse. I don’t care, I just need you.” The tears threatened to spill down her cheeks but he kissed them away,
“I got you, baby. I got you. Let me love you.” He kissed her cheeks, her forehead, her nose until he captured her mouth. He spun her on the spot and backed her into the door, the wood was cool on the silk of her nightwear and made her shiver, she pulled him closer seeking his warmth, and the weight of his body against hers. His hands and kisses were everywhere, Rebecca felt overwhelmed with trying to concentrate on one sensation at a time, trying to commit each one to memory. The roughness of his hands at her waist, on her thigh, the hot kisses against her throat and travelling down between her breasts. He caught a nipple between his teeth through her cami and her whole body arched towards him.
“Please, Ted-” she moaned. He lifted her top over her head to allow for better access and fell to his knees in front of her. She tangled her hands through his hair, pulling it gently and making him moan against her soft belly.
“You’re gonna be the death of me.” He smirked.
“Haven’t, ooof,” she gasped as his hands moved to grab her ass and pull her towards him, “haven’t done anything. Yet.”
“Yet. May I?” He asked, hooking her waistband under his fingers. She nodded, a little bashful, and a blush bloomed from the center of her chest - just as he said it did. He took his time, following the silk material down her legs with kisses and little bites. He found the spot just behind her knee that made her giggle. “Way to ruin a moment there, Welton.”
“It’s not my fault there’s a very fine line between you tickling me and you… oh holy shit, Ted, you doing that.” He’d taken one of her legs and placed it carefully over his shoulder, exposing her to him fully, and placed a kiss at her core.
“Haven’t done anything yet.” He threw her teasing words back at her, earning him a glare.
“I can still tell you to go home.”
“Really?” He stopped completely, sitting back on his heels. She had been joking, but his commitment to checking in had her legs turning to jelly.
“No. Stay all night, I dare you.” She smiled down at him, brushing his hair off his forehead and cupping his cheek. He leaned into her and kissed her palm.
“Anything for you, Becca.” She pulled him to standing.
“Don’t say that,” she said, shaking her head, “The one thing I want is the thing I can’t have.” The comment lingered between them. Everything she wanted would be gone by morning. “But let’s not think about that now. Take me to bed so you can finish what you started.” He rested his forehead against hers before kissing her softly and leading her upstairs.
Rebecca sat on the bed and pulled Ted closer by his belt buckle.
“You’re frustratingly overdressed, Ted.” She muttered, working to undo the catch. She pushed his Richmond sweater up, a hint for him to take it off, which he took.
“I was busy with you. I’d like to be busy with you again.”
“Patience. I’m trying to tattoo this into my brain so I can remember you like this forever.” He reached down to kiss her,
“You’ll see me again sweetheart.”
“Not like this. Not for the first time.” She pushed his khakis down his legs, heat coiling in her belly at the sight of him.
“Now can I finish what I started?” He kissed her and laid her back on the bed before kissing his way down her body, getting to his knees in front of her once again. "Have I told you how beautiful you are yet?"
"Hmm. Not yet." She giggled.
"Well y'are. So beautiful, so perfect." He placed kisses and nips across her thighs, getting closer to where she most needed him, placing a strong hand on her hip to hold her still. She writhed under his kisses, getting more and more impatient.
"Ted, please, please just touch me, you're killing me." Finally, finally, he flicks her clit with the tip of his tongue, her hands fly to tangle in his hair and fuck his mouth feels so good. She was so wet and ready for him, he quickly settled into a rhythm with his tongue before sliding a couple of fingers into her and curling them. He kept pace, knowing exactly where and how she needed him. He could feel her unraveling beneath him, shaking, with his name on her lips like a prayer. As soon as she regained the feeling in her trembling hands, she pulled him up her body and into a deep kiss. "My god, Ted," she sighed, "I really am going to have to insist that you stay now." He laughed, pressing kisses into her neck while she still tried to catch her breath. She feels him, hard and hot against her thigh and it's not long before his kisses move down to her breasts with a gentle bite to one nipple while he brushes the pad of his thumb roughly over the other. She arches her back, trying to get a much contact with his body as possible. Her hand trails down between, gripping him, before slowly stroking him. He stuttered against her skin with a low moan and moved between her legs to fully cover her body. He pulled back to look her in the eye,
"You sure about this? We can still-"
"I'm sure, Ted. I need to feel you inside me, I need to love you." He kissed her firmly as he pushed into her, covering her obscene moans with his mouth, "Yesss" She hissed, bringing her legs up to lock around his hips, bringing him deeper.
"Fuck, Rebecca, you feel so good." He rocked into her slowly, languidly, the closeness pulling her apart once again. He considered speeding up, fucking her into the mattress, but she spoke directly into his ear, biting his earlobe first, "Stay with me, Ted, I need you right here."
"I got you baby, I'm always yours." Her body trembled in his arms as she called out his hand over, and over. His release came only seconds later, he went to move but she placed a hand between his shoulder blades.
"Don't move yet." She whispered.
"I'll hurt you." He said with a sad smile, she shook her head.
"You could never." He rolled just enough so that she could breathe easier, but held her in his arms. "I'm always yours." She repeated back to him. They cleaned up together in the shower and climbed into bed.
"You sure you want me to stay over?"
"I dared you, didn't I? If this night is all I get, then I want all of it." She ran her fingers through his hair as he told her his plans for when he got back to Kansas. She noted how he never called it 'home'. Eventually, they fell asleep, limbs tangled together.
Rebecca woke at some ungodly hour with Ted's hands everywhere. She wasn't sure if he'd try to sneak out, a gallant attempt to make things easier for them both, but two orgasms before breakfast made her very pleased that he'd stayed. They ate croissants together, stealing shy glances at one another, before Ted looked up at the kitchen clock and sighed.
"Back to reality?"
"I'm afraid so."
"Regrets?"
"Non, je ne regrette rien."
"Now you're just being cruel." Ted laughed. "Those legs? That smile? Seeing you come apart over and over? And then you speak French to me?" He shook his head. "Cruel."
"I've got to leave you with something, Ted." She giggled. "Time to go. Good luck for the match." He kissed her one final time, briefly, chastely.
They won. Not quite the whole fucking thing, thanks to Man City, but close. They spent a magical night with the team at Ola's. The live band karaoke was wild and despite Ted’s impending departure, everyone was in good spirits. Rebecca left him alone to take some time with each of the team. She'd had her goodbye. She snuck off into the night, leaving the celebrations and her broken heart behind.
She watched five planes depart after Ted's the following morning. She hadn't been able to resist one final declaration, though she had managed to not kiss him. She held off until she knew he wasn't getting off the plane, sitting with Beard and Jane until he'd given her a small nudge and said, "I think that's it, don't you?" She'd told them to go ahead, she'd see them later, and emerged into the bright sunshine of a new Monday morning.
"It… it's you?" A familiar Dutch voice spoke up.

“Remember to Breathe” ~ Danica’s Dorm Uniform Vignette (3/3)
Tumblr media
“I’ll continue to strive to be someone worthy of this Pomefiore uniform!”
(A/N: The song Danica is singing is “One Last Time” by Ariana Grande, a literary choice that may or may not be foreshadowing future events in her story...)
~~~
~ Pomefiore Dorm - Danica’s Room ~
-Day of The Performance-
*Door opens and Taima walks in wearing her dorm uniform*
Taima: Heeeyyyy, Dani-chan! Your dorm leader asked me to come here and check on you!
Danica: Thanks, I definitely need it! Where’s Sidonie-san?
Taima: She’s out there chatting with Heartslabyul’s vice dorm leader, but she said she’d come here soon. *smiling* So! Your time to shine is drawing near! How are you feeling?
Danica: In an odd way, my anxiety seemed to decrease as the days passed. *exhales* And now, I’d almost say that I can actually do this!
Taima: You CAN do this! Remember what we were always saying back in middle school? You got this! I know you do and, deep down, so do you! We’re gonna take the cultural festival by storm, just you wait!
Danica: Ohhh? *giggling* You’re so sure Vil-san will allow me to let you on the team?
Taima: *slyly* Of course! Just tell him it’s non-negotiable! After today, I’m sure he’ll make a few concessions!
Danica: You don’t know him like I do but I always appreciate your positivity, Tai-chan.
Taima: *grinning* Glad to be of help! Welp, let’s head out, shall we? Your audience awaits!
*Door opens*
Sidonie: Not so fast! Special delivery for you, Danica!
Danica: What? For me? Who’s it from?
Sidonie: I’m not sure, the only note attached is one saying to give this to you before you go to the ballroom.
Danica: A package with no return address? Hmmm…
*She opens it and gasps, Taima and Sidonie gasp too, inside is the silk ribbon/rose headpiece that she wears in her dorm uniform art*
Taima: Wow, what a pretty hair accessory!
Sidonie: It’s beautifully crafted. And look at the ribbons, set them against your Pomefiore robe, the color is a perfect match!
Taima: The rose too, is it…it is! It’s the same material as the lining of your uniform!
Danica: It’s gorgeous, but there’s no indication of who sent it?
Sidonie: As I said, there was no name on the package. And I don’t recognize the handwriting on the note as belonging to anyone in this dorm.
Taima: Hehe, you haven’t even taken the stage yet, Dani, and you already have an admirer! A secret admirer at that!
Sidonie: It certainly seems that way, here, let me arrange it in your hair, on the off chance your admirer is among the audience today.
(A/N: Her sprite appears as such from this point onward)
Sidonie: There, lovely. It really makes you in your dorm uniform shine all the more!
Taima: Yeah, it brings your whole look together!
Danica:...
Taima and Sidonie: …
Danica: Yes! I think so too! Whoever sent this, must know my tastes!
Sidonie: So, my dear, do you think you’re ready now, for your grand debut?
Danica: Ready as I’ll ever be!
Taima: Great! We’re gonna head to the ballroom, see ya soon!
Sidonie: And don’t forget, keep breathing! Remember to breathe, and everything will be alright!
~~~
Tumblr media
(Sound of chattering)
Danica: (Vil told me to wait for his cue before coming in. Wow, there are a lot more people here than I thought. But I’m not gonna think about it.)
*Vil turns in her direction and nods*
Danica: …! (It’s time, okay! Inhale, exhale, I can do this!)
*Music starts*
Danica: *with her eyes closed* (Remember what you practiced, keep breathing. You got this, Dani!) …And I know and I know and I know that you’ve got everything but I got nothing here without you…
Danica: (Okay, so far, so good, but I should probably move around some, not be so still.) *opens her eyes and sees everyone watching her in awe, she smiles* So one last time, I need to be the one who takes you home. One more time, I promise after that, I’ll let you go…(They seem to be enjoying it! Yeah, I CAN do this!)
(A/N: I’ll likely not draw it since I suck at perspective but the groovy art in my mind is of Danica performing in the ballroom, looking fully confident and completely unlike her usual self)
Danica: (My heart is racing in the best way, it’s been so long, I’d forgotten how much I love this!)
Sidonie: *murmuring* My goodness, where did that timid freshman go? She’s transformed into a completely different person!
Rook: She is magnificent! And she moves so gracefully. This pales in comparison to the videos!
Sidonie: I…think I understand now, why Vil wanted her to do this.
Cater: It’s like watching a professional pop idol! This vid is gonna blow up!
Taima: Now there’s the Dani I know!
~~~
*Timeskip*
~ Pomefiore Dorm - Danica’s Room ~
Vil: Well done, an adequate performance.
Rook: Tres spectaculaire, notre chere Madmoiselle Chanteuse! The muses have blessed you incredibly!
Danica: Thank you,Vil-san, Rook-san, I’m glad to have been able to meet your expectations. What did you think, Sidonie-san?
Sidonie: You sing so passionately, the way you put your heart into every note, it gave me goosebumps. And to think, you initially agreed to only sing one song, but you ended up singing three!
Danica: I can’t explain it, but once I began, all my fears seemed to melt away. All I could think about was performing to the best of my ability. But I’m glad there was extra audio available. Vil-san, how did you know to prepare extra?
Vil: *smiling* I always wish to be prepared for every possibility. Something told me you would want to sing more, and in the end, I was right. And now, I’m sure you now know what this means.
Danica: I understand! The cultural festival might be a few months away, but I promise I’ll give it my all!
Vil: In the meantime, continue giving your all in everything you do, Little Potato. Brilliance doesn’t come overnight, it takes perseverance.
Danica: *looking slightly weary* Yes, I…I understand.
Vil: Do you? In that case, I never again want to see you have doubts about something I know you’re capable of. Strive to be someone worthy of wearing that Pomefiore uniform.
Danica: I will! I promise!
Vil: Good, now one last thing, Cater informed me that the video of today’s concert is already going viral. He said he’ll give it to you on Monday if you promise to join the light music club. Also…what the?
(Danica has dozed off on her bed)
Vil: SHE FELL ASLEEP?!
Sidonie: *chuckling* Poor thing, this past week has left her so stressed, first about her evaluation and then about today’s show.
Rook: Ahh, some much-needed rest will do her a world of good then.
Vil: Wake her up! She’ll get her robe wrinkled and I wasn’t finished…
Sidonie: Please, Vil-san. Just this once. I think you owe her that much.
Vil: I can’t allow her to sleep in her uniform! It’ll set a bad precedent…
Sidonie: Who else is gonna know?
Vil: …
Sidonie: Or perhaps, after I wake her, I should tell her how you had already decided to…
Vil: Fine! I’ll concede this one time, but she will be hearing about this!
Take Your Father to Work Day (S2, E4)
Tumblr media
As many people have said: This is one of the STRONGEST Prodigal Son episodes to date. It was incredible. My time-stamped thoughts for this episode are below.
I reference Malcolm’s mental health and sexual violence in this one. So if that’s going to be a trigger for you, don’t keep reading.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
0:16 - OMG. Destiny’s Child. Whoever is in charge of the soundtrack for this show needs a raise. Or an award. It’s SOO GOOD.
0:18 - How great is this montage of Martin’s prison life too? I mean the insane mundanity of it combined with “Survivor” and Michael Sheen’s incredible acting is some perfect mix between hilarious, captivating, and just brilliant.
1:06 - I feel so bad for Mr.David. He has to deal with Martin’s theatrics every day. Poor guy looks done in this episode.
1:35 - CAN HECTOR BECOME A BIGGER CHARACTER?! PLEASE. He’s hilarious and I love him. “Bro. You got your ass jumped at Sunday School.”
2:09 - Wait. What? Jerry’s getting released?!? I mean, I understand that he’s no longer in need of psychiatric care......but he still killed someone. Shouldn’t he just be getting transferred to a different prison?
2:25 - Does Jerry have a death wish?!?! He’s talking about being released in a room full of jealous murderers. Everyone looks sooooo pissed at Jerry.
2:54 - Martin is such a liar. However - Michael Sheen’s performance is astoundingly good. Like he shines brighter than usual in this episode.
 3:17 - Poor Malcolm. “What’s going on?” Poor boy looks terrified.
3:23 - I love everything about this scene. I love how freaked out Malcolm is. I love you extra Jessica is. BUT HANS. Holy shit. I want Hans in every episode. He’s crazy in a good way and such a beautiful comedic relief.
3:30 - OMG.  “Skinny milennial” might be the best thing anyone has ever called Malcolm. Someone please tell JT and Dani - hell, even Gil. They would tease him forever and I want to see it.
3:45 - 1) Malcolm is a terrible liar. 2) Jessica knows he’s lying. 3) This story about the wine is interesting. I wonder when and how Malcolm first told Jessica the story. Was it the same night? AND HOW DID ENDICOTT’S BODY END UP IN ESTONIA?!? I WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THAT NIGHT.
3:54 - “Ainsley and I came back from the hospital after Gil’s stabbing.”....we never saw Ainsley at the hospital. Was she there and left before Malcolm got there? Or is this a plot hole I need to ignore?
4:05 - The way that the flashbacks of Endicott’s murder is spliced into this scene with Malcolm’s cover story is so perfectly executed. It’s so captivating and so so well done.
4:14 - Malcolm’s eyes look quite manic during the retelling of this story. Poor guy is desperate to have everyone believe the story. Poor guy probably wants to convince himself that the story is true.
4:16 - Wait. What? Ainsley has always been clumsy? .....interesting. I’ve seen no evidence of it but I’ll believe it for the sake of the plot.
4:23 - “At least one of you has a soul.” Holy shit.  hahaha Hans is brutal. I love him so much. I also love how this line makes me, as a viewer, think “does that mean the writers want me to think that Ainsley doesn’t have a soul?” ...or more likely that she doesn’t feel emotion (which can be interpreted as a lack of a soul). That she’s a psychopath like Martin?
4:27 - OMG. Jessica loves Hans. He speaks to her dramatic rich woman soul. So entertaining.
4:30 - Poor. Malcolm. This boy is always in some sort of emotional turmoil. For once I wish he was happy (but also I love the emotional whump so if that could continue that would be great).
4:44 - “It’s so much more than that.” *chef’s kiss* comedic genius.  I would watch a whole episode of Mr.David making fun of Martin. But can we all just take a minute to appreciate that Martin doesn’t seem bothered at all that Mr.David is basically verbally telling him that he sucks? It’s almost like Martin thinks they’re friends?
4:50 - Martin is strangely chill talking to Mr.David in this scene. It’s a little off-putting. He almost seems normal. He’s not putting on his usual theatrics or ranting about doctor stuff. It makes you wonder how many different sides of Martin that Mr.David has witnessed.
5:01 - “Oh no. Not Jerry.” LMAO. HOLY SHIT. Michael Sheen needs an Emmy. His delivery of that line might be the funniest thing this show has ever given us. hahahahaha
5:29 - Damn. This is not Gil’s month. First Jessica dumps him. Then he has to deal with Martin Whitly in the flesh. That plus the on-going drama of worrying about Malcolm’s mental health and the stress of reintegrating into work after a STAB WOUND.
5:31 - Gil’s face. hahahahaha he’s like, “Kill me. This can’t be happening. I hate everything. I wish the ground would open up and swallow me whole.”
5:37 - “Yeah. Why’d you do it?” GIL. OMG. I’m so proud of Gil for dissing Martin to his face. BUT ALSO I worry that that’s going to give Martin more of a reason to hate Gil. I’m genuinely scared that the writers have Martin escaping as the pre-finale episode and Martin trying to kill Gil as the finale. Maybe Gil shows up trying to save Malcolm, AInsley, and Jessica (whom Martin is trying to abduct or hurt or something) idk I just feel like it’s going to be a likely subplot somewhere. I don’t want an attempt on Gil’s life to become a season finale tradition.
5:56 - Ew. “Gilly” That is a terrible nickname. I think I threw up a little.
6:00 - Damn. I love this scene. I could watch Martin and Gil pretending to be civil to each other for years. So entertaining.
6:29 - hahahahaha OMG. Gil’s reaction to Martin saying, “Thank you” PLUS Edrisa’s sudden excitement at realizing she’s 10 ft away from Malcolm’s Dad - a medical legend, is magical.
6:35 - Not gonna lie. When Edrisa said, “Ok. I’m gonna play it cool.” I had to pause my TV and walk away to calm down. I was experiencing a mixture of second hand embarrassment for Edrisa’s inevitable behaviour, excitement for what is to come, and fear that Martin would be a jerk to our precious Edrisa.
6:44 - Edrisa and Martin interacting was everything I’d hoped. It was strange, funny, sweet, and disturbing at the same time. The sweet, eccentric girl who attends cuddle parties is getting buddy-buddy with a literal serial killer. Hilarious. Even better is Gil’s background reactions as he desperately tries to keep Edrisa away from the psychopath. hahaha <3
7:12 - Gil is currently living in a nightmare. hahahahaha
7:47 - I love this. I love how Malcolm and Ainsley interact. Malcolm is such a good big brother. IDK something about these two adult siblings chilling on a couch and warning each other about Mom’s current rampage reminds me of myself and my younger brother. <3 Warms my cold dead heart. <3 PLUS has anyone else noticed that (as long as Ainsley isn’t hounding Malcolm about a story or airing out his mental health diagnoses like the bs from Q&A) Malcolm is extremely calm around Ainsley. Like maybe the calmest we’ve ever seen him?
8:20 - “Oh Ainsley, that’s a horrible idea.” This is adorable. Malcolm is totally acting like Ainsley’s surrogate dad. He’s trying so hard to protect her. <3
8:42 - There’s something about the way that Malcolm says, “Hey Gil” that makes my heart swell. Idk why. I just their father/son relationship. So much. And it makes me so happy to see Malcolm having semi-normal interactions with people in general.
8:48 - This. Is. The. Funniest. Episode. Of. Prodigal. Son. To. Date. Holy shit. The comical dread on Malcolm’s face. Martin’s glee on the phone. Gil’s general “done with life” body language. Ainsley’s utter joy at her luck. MALCOLM DRAINING THE ALKA-SELTZER. Ainsley saying “chug chug”. So perfect.
9:27 - Is it just me or has Jessica been showing way more concern for her children’s well-being this season? At first I thought it was because she was so happy with Gil....but that’s not a thing anymore (because Jessica is a MORON - seriously if this show gets cancelled before Gil and Jessica are living happily ever after I will riot) so now Idk.
10:02 - EDRISA WHY DID YOU NOT TELL GIL AND MALCOLM THAT THE SURGEON WAS ON THE PHONE?!? For a hot second, poor Malcolm looks like he thinks he’s hallucinating.
10:40 - Gil hanging up on Martin and then telling Edrisa that she needs to make new friends is everything. It’s vicious. Gil looks absolutely furious in this scene and I love it.
11:07 - Yo. Edrisa’s got some baggage. hahaha Malcolm looks soooo uncomfortable with her outburst.
11:18 - I would pay good money to watch Martin and Gil have a pissing match in front of Malcolm every episode. It’s amazing. They’re constantly trying to one-up each other. The tension is palatable. And someone Malcolm is the only one acting like a mature, working adult. Malcolm. My mentally unstable, skinny millennial.
11:34 - OH SHIT. Martin did not just bring Jessica into this. Oh SNAP. Does Martin know that Jessica dumped Gil?!?
11:56 - “I’m going to need a little more than that.” Damn. Malcolm looks pissed here. Pretty sure he hates that Martin just brought up Gil/Jessica. Malcolm’s bio-dad and real dad are fighting and it’s very clear that Malcolm is on Gil’s side.
12:17 - The look that Gil and Malcolm share here is perfect. I love it so much. You can see how annoyed they both are, how much they hate that they need Martin on this case, how much neither of them want Martin’s help. <3
12:23 - SOMEONE GIVE GIL A MEDAL. This man just grit his teeth, smiled, and let MARTIN WHITLY - the man who tried to KILL HIM work on his case. Why? Because Malcolm silently asked him to. Because Gil loves Malcolm and knows that it’s better for Martin to work with them officially than for Malcolm to work with Martin in secret. At least this way he can look out for Malcolm.
12:42 - “It’s taken Dr. Marsh years...” soooo was Dr. Marsh the name of the Asian doctor leading group therapy last season? Is this just a new actor, same character scenario? OR am I supposed to forget that Asian doctor existed last season?
13:04 - I can’t tell if Gil hates this whole “father-son in group therapy idea”. He looks kind of like he hates it (although he is looking at Martin in the shot). I’m inclined to think that Gil is worried. He doesn’t like how nice Martin is acting toward Malcolm. He doesn’t want Malcolm to get hurt again. BUT I also think there’s probably a part of Gil that thinks group therapy might be beneficial for Malcolm’s mental health? I mean it was only ever going to be terrible or amazing. Nothing in between.
13:12 - “They hate you don’t they?” GIL BRINGING THE FIRE. hahahaha angry Gil is really funny.
13:43 - OH HELL YES. More Hector. <3
13:46 - hahaha YES. Hector this is Malcolm - the son. You know, the one you had to role-play? hahaha I feel like Hector is a really cool dude (aside from the murder).
13:53 - Damn. Hector pays attention in group. He has a lot of info about Malcolm. I would’ve thought the other inmates would just tune Martin out when he starts his monologues.
13:59 - “He’s got a thing with hands?” hahahaha OMG. How did I never connect the hand thing. DOES Malcolm have a thing with hands? ....I kind of want that to be cannon?
14:00 - “You’re crazier than me.”  Ouch. That must’ve hurt. Think about it - Malcolm is ridden with guilt about Endicott. He’s haunted by what he experienced as a kid and by what his father is. Malcolm believes he’s broken beyond repair. On some level Malcolm thinks he’s crazy. Now a literal killer just told him he’s crazy. That just affirms what Malcolm already believes about himself. :( PLUS right after Hector tells Malcolm that he’s crazy - the camera pans to Martin. MARTIN looks scared. Martin is losing control of the situation and he doesn’t like it. Martin knows on some level that he ruined Malcolm’s mental health. He almost looks a little guilty?
14:31 - FINALLY. We have a cannon occurrence of someone calling Malcolm “Mal” (or “Malc” if you’re going by HULU’s subtitles?). I hope the writers start having people call Malcolm by Mal/Malc more often.
14:35 - I can’t ignore it anymore.  DID HECTOR HAVE THAT SCAR ON HIS FACE LAST SEASON?!? I DON’T REMEMBER IT.
14:38 - YES YES. Malcolm looks angry. I LOVE IT. Scream at him Malcolm! Give him hell!
15:03 - Yikes. Malcolm sounds like he’s about to cry here. :( My heart breaks for him. .....I wonder if this is the first time Martin has ever heard how much pain he caused Malcolm straight from Malcolm? Martin looks hella uncomfortable here.
15:25 - The inmates (literal murderers) empathizing with Malcolm is twisted, beautiful, and haunting. These guys understand how much it sucks to hang out with Martin. These guys can see the real pain in Malcolm’s expression. They know he isn’t lying. Part of me honestly wonders if one of them is going to try and hurt Martin for Malcolm. They looked pissed enough by the end of the conversation that I kind of believe they might.
16:00 - Malcolm is not acting here. For once he’s not projecting his problems onto potential suspects. He’s just venting to suspects. No pretence. I love it. BUT 100% of me wants to know where Gil is during this session. Is Gil listening? Is the session being recorded for evidence? There’s no way Gil (or Dani) wouldn’t confront Malcolm about this. Even if they just asked him if he’s okay.
16:10 - hahahaha look at Doctor Marsh. He’s like “ooookkkkkaaaayyyy. I’m a psychiatrist in a psychiatric facility for people who have committed violent crimes. BUT THIS IS THE NUTTIEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN.”
16:12 - Look at the way Martin narrows his eyes. He’s trying to figure out if Malcolm is acting. He’s finally realizing that Malcolm truly hates what Martin subjected him to as a child. I honestly think this interaction will cause Martin to shift his “become a murderer like me” agenda from Malcolm to Ainsley. He’s finally seen the depth of Malcolm’s hatred and pain and knows deep down that Malcolm will never turn into a serial killer. But there’s still hope for Ainsley. That’s not to say that Martin won’t stop gaslighting Malcolm - he totally will.
17:10 - Martin has been at Claremont for 20 YEARS. How is it that he didn’t know a gold card existed?!?
17:21 - I honestly thought Marsh was going to get shanked. For the gold card. No other reason.
18:07 - It’s not supposed to be funny but Burt freaking out and punching Marsh is HYSTERICAL. hahahahaha
18:10 - That guard who pushed Malcolm out of the room and into a safe area? He’s in my good books. Every time I watch him push Malcolm to safety I want to give him a hug. Just for doing his job. What the hell is wrong with me?!?
18:18 - UGH. I hate that creepy, satisfied look that Martin gives Malcolm. It’s the same look he gave baby Malcolm in the pilot. It’s the “we’re the same” look and it clearly bothers Malcolm. :(
18:26 - Oh look. 18 minutes into the episode and we finally have a Dani appearance!! annnnnnd no mention of JT. I mean, I get it. He’s on paternity leave. I’m happy for him. BUT TWO EPISODES WITHOUT A JT APPEARANCE IS TORTURE. At least give me a throw away line about how happy JT is or about the baby!?? Honestly - it’s my biggest gripe with this episode.
18:56 - soooo either Dr. Marsh is a terrible psychiatrist OR you can’t “cure” murderers.
19:08 - The NYPD knows that Martin cured Jerry?!? HOW? Did Mr. David get Martin to admit to shocking him? Did Mr. David tell the police?!? I don’t remember Martin telling Malcolm. I specifically remember Malcolm saying, “I don’t want to know”
20:02 - Damn. I want Ainsley to go dark so badly. I want to see how badly it would destroy Malcolm and Jessica. I am evil.
20:52 - Malcolm’s burgundy jacket is gorgeous. That is all.
21:10 - Malcolm knows that Martin wants to escape. This is good. I love this.
21:55 - THERE’S A WOMENS WARD?!? REVOLUTIONARY INFORMATION. I THOUGHT THEY HAD A SEPARATE HOSPITAL.
22:00 - Oh wow. Finally - a perk to gender inequality.
22:52 - This Brightwell scene is so cute. I love watching Malcolm be excited about solving the crime. I love watching Dani gently tease him about how weird he is. I love watching them subtly flirt. Is Malcolm ready for another relationship - hell no. Do I think Dani has forgiven him - not totally. If they got together now it would end badly. But I do want them to be endgame.
23:11 - Andre is really suspicious throughout this whole scene. I’m convinced that if Dani and Malcolm weren’t too busy flirting Andre would’ve become a suspect really fast.
23:15 - Why do people get released from psychiatric prisons?!? This is a genuine question. I would’ve thought that everyone in Claremont has committed some seriously heinous crimes and only a very small portion of them are actually sick. The rest of them just pleaded insanity and had good lawyers. But even if they are/were sick. I don’t think the types of mental illnesses that drive people to murder and/or rape is something that can be cured.  Sooo why are they getting released? I guess I just wonder because there’s this guy that’s been in my local news on and off for like 10+ years. He’s molested/raped many young women between the ages of about 16-25. He’s been arrested and released multiple times. He keeps getting released to different major cities in my province (usually a city with a big University) and reoffends within 6 months of being released. Most recently he was arrested last month after being released in October 2020. Clearly he’s going to keep reoffending - so why does he keep getting released? I guess I just don’t understand what the criteria are that allow an inmate who has committed that sort of crime to be released. Here’s a link to one of the more recent news stories if you’re interested: https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/police-warn-of-high-risk-sex-offender-moving-to-victoria-1.5149264
23:23 - hahaha Andre is like, “Yo. This dude is freaky.”
24:15 - Look at how proud Malcolm is of his whole “lobster = murderer” profile. <3 So freaking precious. <3 and Dani looks so amused with him.  <3
24:37 - Sooooo Mr. David isn’t listening to this conversation? He left the room?
24:40 - Jessica going to Martin for parenting help is terrifying. This is a woman in crisis.
25:20 - But Jessica was right to be paranoid in 97′. She wasn’t being cheated on romantically but her husband was murdering people.
25:24 - Martin is so selling his kids out here. He knows it. He doesn’t care. He’s having too much fun torturing Jessica. He’s rejoicing at the fact that he gets to play the “I turned the kids to the dark side” card.
26:40 - Poor Jessica. She looks suspicious and scared. Scared that she raised a killer even though she tried desperately to prevent that very behaviour.
26:56 - Damn. Martin is having a really good day. First he gets to annoy Gil Arroyo in the flesh. Then Edrisa talks medical with him. Then he gets to work with Malcolm. THEN his ex-wife calls him and he gets to toy with her mind. THEN his daughter, who has literally murdered someone comes to visit him. He is a proud Dad right here and he’s having an amazing day.
28:00 - Rhonda is terrifying. This girl has perfected the “I’m sweet and unthreatening” while lying and manipulating people. I swear she’s a teenage Queen B personality with a side of violence.
28:30 - I love how protective Malcolm is of Ainsley. Look how positively livid he is that Marin is talking to her. Malcolm is terrified that Martin is going to purposefully and successfully turn Ainsley into a serial killer. Malcolm doesn’t want to lose his sister. He doesn’t want Jessica to lose her ‘stable’ child.
29:09 - This scares me. This is the kind of Ainsley behaviour from last season that made me believe she is the Whitly child most like Martin. Her ruthlessness and lack of a conscience when it comes to looking for a news story is extremely upsetting.
30:11 - What the hell happened to Tevin? AND WATKINS?!? We got no closure on those guys. Are they dead? In prison? Is Tevin still in Claremont? Were they transferred to facilities outside of New York State?
30:28 - Malcolm yelling at Martin is perfect. *chef’s kiss* Finally this boy is being honest with his father and he isn’t holding back.
30:40 - Michael Sheen is an incredible actor. This is an Emmy worthy scene. By Sheen AND Payne.
30:48 - I love how you can see Mr. David just chilling. Sitting outside the door and staring across the hall during this scene. It’s just....can’t he hear the screaming?!? Is he just like, “I can’t take anymore of this today. Not my circus and not my monkeys.”
30:55 - Soooooo this is Martin showing his true colours. There’s definitely a part of Martin that hates Malcolm. I honestly wonder if that part of Martin actively tries/tried to emotionally torture Malcolm now and throughout his childhood.
31:00 - “And your mother. And you ruined HeR!!!”....does this mean Martin was trying to make Ainsley a serial killer? Maybe after the camping trip when he realized Malcolm was too “weak” to kill anyone? Is this Martin saying that Ainsley is ruined because she didn’t become a serial killer? Or that Ainsley is ruined because she killed Endicott?
31:05 - “But that’s not me.” hahaha OMG. Michael Sheen just flipped between two personalities like nobody’s business. Respect.
31:08 - Martin’s outburst hurt Malcolm. Badly. You can see it all over his face. Even now, when Malcolm is being strong and showing some backbone to Martin, Martin can wound Malcolm with a single phrase. :(
31:41 - soooo where has Gil been for the past 10 minutes of this episode?
32:02 - Sooooo did Andre kill Jerry for Rhonda? Or did he just know about the murder and keep quiet for Rhonda? Or is his oblivious to the fact that Rhonda killed Jerry? I’m honestly confused here.
32:20 - Holy shit. Rhonda is crazy. Andre is dead now. Right?
32:48 - Wait. Why did Andre have a gold card? Mr. David only has red. What kind of qualifications does a guard need to get a gold card vs blue, green, or red?!?!
32:55 - Claremont isn’t a punishment for Martin. Solitary is. Martin should live in solitary. He deserves to suffer for his crimes (and the ongoing torture of his son).
33:05 - How messed up is it that Mr. David’s job is to protect a serial killer? I don’t think I’m brave enough to do something like that. I also don’t know if I could do that for moral reasons.
33:14 - Damn. That elevator looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was installed. It’s sooo much nastier than the hallway outside of the elevator.
33:50 - Sooo does this mean Martin is eventually going to try and murder someone down here?
33:54 - HE CALLED FOR BACKUP <3 <3 <3 OUR BOY IS GROWING UP AND I’M SO PROUD. <3
35:40 - FINALLY SOME MALCOLM WHUMP. <3 THIS SEASON HAS BEEN LACKING IT.
36:00 - This is really interesting to me. I honestly wonder if Martin has some sort of split personality disorder (personality #1: murderous, selfish, psychopath; personality #2: loving, concerned father and lawful doctor). You can see how desperately he wants to escape. But also how much he loves his son. I honestly thought he was going to leave Malcolm to die.
36:06 - Ugh. Look at his whumped face. <3 <3 <3 ....one thing that I couldn’t stop thinking during all the tazing (which was amazing FYI, I’m not complaining) is this: in QxA (1x07) Mr. David says that he only has a single shot tazer. Why did Andre have a multi-shot tazer? Is this a gold card vs red card thing?
36:40 - WHY THE EFF DOES BACKUP NOT INCLUDE GIL?!?! I KNOW HE’S STILL IN THE BUILDING.
37:03 - MARTIN, IF YOU TOUCH A HAIR ON DANI’S HEAD I WILL PERSONALLY HUNT YOU DOWN AND KILL YOU MYSELF. He honestly looks like he wants to murder her.
37:50 - Martin’s speech is not going to help Malcolm’s mental state. At all.
38:31 - No. No. No. Martin you do NOT get to talk to Dani on a first name basis. Look at how much Dani hates it.
38:35 - I love how soft Malcolm looks as Martin lifts him up. Look at how Malcolm gently leans into the touch. It breaks my heart. After 20 years Malcolm is still comforted by physical contact with his father. :(
38:37 - “Put your hands on me again Dr. Whitly, and I’ll blow your head off.” OH HELL YES. Dani is my hero. Iconic. Also - anyone else notice that Dani is chewing gum in this scene (I don’t think she’s chewed gum on camera since the pilot?) it makes her look like so much more of a badass in this scene.
38:55 - Oh look. The rest of the backup finally showed up. Where were these assholes 5 minutes ago when DANI WAS ALONE? AND WHERE IS GIL?!?!
39:00 - Malcolm thanking Dani is so so precious. And the fact that he’s clearly struggling to breathe and stay conscious is giving me life. ALSO Dani saying, “YOU’re welcome.”?!? *chef’s kiss* :) :) <3
39:30 - So Malcolm definitely knows that Martin almost left him to die so that Martin could escape.
39:33 - ......Ainsley is currently living with Jessica. Why is Ainsley not at the family dinner? We literally see her in the house in like 30 seconds.
39:35 - Malcolm in a polo shirt. Malcolm in a polo shirt. Why is it so attractive?!? He looks like a baby cinnamon roll? <3
39:51 - WHO THE EFF LET AINSLEY INTO THE MURDER BASEMENT?!? WHY AM I EXPECTED TO BELIEVE THAT JESSICA DIDN’T RE-SEAL IT AFTER WATKINS?!?!
40:15 - Jessica desperately tearing apart the living room is heartbreaking. :(
40:29 - Question: Did Jessica send her staff home before she tore apart the living room? Because I can just imagine two of them staring into the living room from the hall like, “She’s finally snapped. Should we call someone?”
41:00 - Jessica is the queen of drama. HOLY SHIT. This reveal was so extra and so perfect.
41:13 - “I killed him.” “You’re lying.” I love this interaction between Jessica and Malcolm. Malcolm has spent his whole life trying to convince people that he’s not a murderer. To protect Ainsley, his baby sister, he will say the words “I killed him”. Even though that is literally killing a part of Malcolm. Jessica knows it. I love that Jessica can see that Malcolm is lying. She’s not trying to convince herself that he’s innocent. She literally just accused him of murder. She’s scared. Because Malcolm just admitted to killing someone - his biggest fear - and it was a lie.
41:35 - Watching Bellamy Young’s facial expression as Jessica realizes that Ainsley killed Endicott is a thing of beauty. This woman needs an Emmy too. HELL, CAN WE GIVE THIS WHOLE EPISODE AN EMMY?!?!
42:00 - Poor Jessica. The guilt she must feel. She’s always thought that Malcolm was the one at risk of being a murderer. He’s a boy (they’re statistically more prone to violence than girls), he was older than Ainsley, he remembers terrible things, Malcolm had continued exposure to Martin throughout his childhood (Ainsley didn’t - I think?). But the child she neglected, the child she thought was safe, the child she thought remained free of Martin’s evil killed someone. It’s a plot-twist that just ripped Jessica’s heart into a million pieces.
42:30 - Yep. I promise you Malcolm has been psychoanalyzing Ainsley’s past behaviours since the moment she killed Endicott. He’s found traits common to serial killers and he’s terrified that she’ll become one if she remembers what it felt like to kill Endicott. He’s probably kicking himself for not noticing sooner. He’s probably questioning his ability as a profiler and as a big brother. AND the fact that MALCOLM has to protect Jessica AND Ainsley is heartbreaking. It’s way too big a burden. No wonder Malcolm’s mental health is on a downward spiral.
42:33 - This is the moment Jessica begins grieving for Ainsley. The fear, disbelief, and horror on her face. It’s torture that I can only describe as someone telling a mother that her daughter is dead. Because Ainsley is dead. The person Jessica believed Ainsley was - that little girl is dead. Because Jess just found out the truth.
42:55 - Jessica is now terrified of her own daughter. That is maybe the most upsetting thing this show has given us.
43:00 - I saw an interesting theory about how Ainsley is regressing back to her childhood (crawling into bed with Mom, moving back in with Mom) and I must say - that would be a really interesting way for this story to go. Ainsley regressing to a child-like state as she is convicted of murder. As a result she ends up in the women’s ward of Claremont because she can plead insanity.
This episode was amazing. Seriously, one of the best Prodigal Son episodes to date. Definitely the best of season 2 so far. If you’ve read this far - thanks for hanging out.
supermarket flowers [jamie taylor]
Jamie Taylor x fem reader
Requested:  We all know flowers are one of Jamie’s love languages so she likes giving the reader flowers as gifts to tell her things and to mark points in their relationship (bonus if one time it’s the reader that gives jamie flowers)
Saying that Bly Manor is beautiful would be an understatement: the amazing architecture, the people, but especially the gardens.
But you maybe a little bias on that front because of Jamie...the beautiful beautiful gardener and your beautiful wife.
And it all started when your sister Dani got the au pair job. Obviously, you had to get a job there as well, you couldn’t live in Bly without having a job. So you took up an apprentice job with Owen as his little chef in training. That’s how you two met.
“You see we don’t use a hand mixer in this house because of the glucose levels in the dough. They need to be in tip top shape or else they won’t taste as good.” Owen explains and you’re about to respond when a beautiful brunette walks into the room.
Your eyes never left her figure as she walked into the kitchen, barely acknowledging your assistance, “What is that?” she asks.
“We’re making dough for our pizza tonight!” Owen exclaims, “I was just giving Y/N here a quick lesson dough chemistry.”
She finally locks eyes with yours and you’re drowning in them. Her beautiful brown eyes were captivating. And it was up to you if you decided you wanted to sink or swim. There was a spark there and she had to have felt it too.
“Although, I’m sensing this dough is not the only thing that has chemistry.” Owen says with a little smirk on his face.
You laugh nervously, speechless as what to say, “I’m Jamie,” the gardener says extending her hand out and you gratefully accept it.
There were sparks, electricity coursing through your body at this point and Jamie releases a deep breath, “Y/N Clayton, Dani’s little sister.”
“Oh so you’re Little Poppins.” she says with a smirk and you chuckle at the nickname, “Or should I call you Chef Poppins?” she adds on.
“Either one is fine with me thank you.” you smile at her and she nods her head.
“Alright then, I have some more flowers and bushes to tend to.” Jamie says and leaves to go back to the garden.
You turn back to look at Owen and he’s smiling at you, “Awe you’re still blushing.” he says poking your cheek before getting back to kneading the dough.
Flash forward to five years later and now you’re married as happier than you ever thought you could be despite everything that happened.
Bly was an interesting case to say the least. The whole Lady in the Lake situation was quite a scary scene. We lost Hannah and day by day Dani is losing herself. But you still have her here, your sister is still here with you and that’s all the matters right now.
You found yourself at the farmer’s market. Jamie was back at The Leafling helping everyone who wants flowers. You had big news for her and wanted to give her a flower to show your love. You just had to find the perfect one.
All of your relationship Jamie has taught you so much about flowers. The most intriguing part of it to you was all of the various meanings.
You stood in the kitchen as you began to cut the pizza you and Owen made for everyone into slices. Owen was tossing all of the salad together as Hannah was making the tea.
Flora, Dani, and Miles were setting the table up. Jamie comes walking in with a handful of different colorful flowers.
“Flowers for delivery!” Jamie announces and Flora squeals in excitement, “Here ya go Flora.”
Jamie hands her Flora’s own flower before giving one to Miles. You though it was sweet that she was giving the children flowers. But your joy turned into a quick confusion when you realized that she was giving everyone one.
“Is this still a gerbera daisy?” Flora asks putting her flower in a vase.
You saw small little vases lined up along the window sill with everyone’s names on it. You didn’t notice until now that both you and Dani have your own little vase. A small smile started forming on your face.
“Yes it is, do you remember what it means?” Jamie asks staring at Flora intently.
“Of course I do! It means innocence, cheerfulness and joy!” Flora exclaims and she smiles at the young girl before giving a nod.
“Nice job little rascal.” she says booping her nose before handing you your flower.
You are presented with a beautiful flower they were pink and very swirly in the middle of it, “What kind of flower is this? And what does mine mean?” you ask realizing that everyone had different flowers probably all meaning different things.
She smiles to herself before putting a bite of salad in her mouth and eating it. After she finished eating she clears her throat, “It is a ranunculus, also known as buttercups. It symbolizes charm, radiance, and attraction.” she whispers the last part, but everyone at the table heard.
You smile to yourself looking into those beautiful brown eyes before looking down to take a bite of pizza. Dani nudges you and mouths the words ‘Oh my god!’ as you smile at your sister.
“Seems like Jamie pepper-only has eyes for Y/N.” Owen murmurs and the whole table groans in response, but as you catch Jamie’s eye she sends you a wink.
You’ve searched this whole farmer’s market twice to try and find the flower you’re looking for. But none of them seemed to be the right match. How hard is it to find daisies? It’s not that hard they’re in season and they’re all over The Leafling, but I can’t take it from the store.
However, you did come across pink carnations. A flower you know very well and is embedded deep into your heart.
You and Jamie have been dating for about six months now and each day your relationship is growing stronger and stronger.
“Someone looks excited for their date tonight!” Dani teases as she walks into your shared bedroom.
You look over yourself in the mirror and show her your outfit, “Yay or nay?” you ask as you do a little spin.
“You look beautiful Y/N!” she says as she embraces you in a hug, “Well you always look beautiful, but Jamie is gonna love it. If she breaks your heart, I’ll end her.”
You pat your sister on the shoulder, “Dani I love you, but we all know that she will beat the living shite out of you.” you say trying mimick Jamie’s British accent.
She laughs and nods, “Yeah you’re right! But still!”
There was a knock on the door and Dani let out a little squeal. She opened the door and revealed the beauty that is Ms. Jamie Taylor.
“Hello Poppins, is Little Poppins here?” she asks and you smile at the nickname.
“Yes she is right here.” Dani opens the door a little wider and Jamie steps in with a bouquet of flowers in her hand.
She looks at you up and down before smiling at you, “You look absolutely beautiful. These are for you.” she says and you smile taking them from her.
“Thank you. What’s the story behind these?” you ask sniffing them before placing them in a vase that you always keep by your bedside now.
“The story is for a later time, in more private.” Jamie says sneaking a glance at Dani who was still standing there with a big smile on her face.
“Oh me! Right! I’ll see you when you get back!” Dani exclaims as she pushes you out of the door.
You get into Jamie’s car as she drives you into the little village of Bly. She knows a nice little restaurant that she has grown to love. As she parked the car she leans over the middle console and places a soft kiss to your lips.
“Wait here, I’m gonna grab our food.” Jamie says.
Before you can ask her what the plan was for tonight she left the car and went into the restaurant. Your head was spinning from the kiss. It may have been a short and sweet kiss, but it was still intoxicating.
Every kiss with Jamie no matter how short or soft it was, it still had so much passion and love behind it. Every day you find yourself falling more and more in love with the gardener. You haven’t told her yet, but gosh you loved this girl more than life itself.
Jamie came back into the car with a bag full of food. She placed it into the back seat and started the car back up again, “Where are we going love?” you ask her.
“Back to the manor of course. I know a little spot we can eat there.” she says before intertwining your fingers together.
The two of you made it back to Bly and you went to the greenhouse. You meet there every morning and share a small coffee before you have to get to work. You placed yourself on the couch as she sat down next to you placing another kiss to your lips.
The two of you started eating as you embarked on the most simple yet beautiful conversations. As you two finished eating you look at her with a smirk on your face.
“What?” she asks smiling back.
“The story behind the flower you never told me.” you say sitting criss-cross applesauce on the couch and turning to face her.
She laughs nervously, probably the first time you’ve ever seen her nervous, “Carnations, a lot of people don’t like them and I don’t know why. In my opinion, they’re beautiful. But they mean fascination and new love. Which is what I feel about you. However, it’s not new love. It’s love that I’ve felt since the first time I laid eyes on you. I love you Y/N Clayton.” she says and you smile at her widely.
“I love you Jamie Taylor.” you whisper back.
You didn’t think her smile could widen even more, “Fuck yeah.” she whispers.
She crashes her lips onto yours as you thread your fingers through her hair. You place your hand on the back of her neck pulling her as close to you as possible. Her body pressed against yours and you were drunk off of her love and kisses.
Your big brick of phone began to ring from your purse. You took it out and answered it already knowing it was one of two people, “Hello?” you ask as you pull out of your parking spot in the farmer’s market.
“Hi darling,” you hear Jamie’s voice fill the phone.
“Hello my love, what’s up?” you ask as you begin your drive to your little apartment about The Leafling.
“Are you still at the farmer’s market?” she asks.
“No why? Do you need something?” you answer.
“Yes unless you got more cereal at the farmer’s market.” Jamie replies.
You chuckle slightly at the sarcasm, “I’ll stop at the supermarket and grab a couple boxes. How’s Dani?” you ask.
Dani has been living in your guest bedroom of the apartment. Jamie doesn’t mind knowing how much she means to you and how much Dani means to her. Whatever the hell went down at Bly was really taking a toll and you just want to be there to take care of her and keep an eye on her as much as you can.
“She’s having a good day today. She has helped out with the shop, there was a little jump when she looked into the window, but I helped her out.” she explained and you nodded sighing a little bit, “She’s gonna be okay.” Jamie reassured you already reading your mind.
Your sister mentioned that something was gonna take over one day. And it already started back up again. She’s scared and so are you. She was the only family you have ever known and you don’t know what you’re gonna do if she goes.
“I hope so. I’ll see you when I get home.” you say.
“Okay love, drive safe. I love you.” she says and you smile at those three little words.
“I love you more.” you respond before hanging up and making your way to the supermarket.
“Jamie, baby, where are we going?” you ask as her hands covers your eyes guiding you to a small little place in the gardens of Bly.
“Shh-it’s a surprise love. You’re not supposed to know that’s the whole point of a surprise she expresses and you internally roll your eyes, “I can sense that eye roll.” she says and you giggle lightly.
“How did you know?” you ask laughing.
“Y/N, we’ve been dating for three years now. Of course I know when you’re rolling your eyes.” she explains and you laugh even more.
She releases her hands from your eyes to see a beautiful secluded area with a beautiful flower growing on the bush. The moonlight hitting it just right causing to have this sort of glow effect.
“That right there is a moonflower. It’s a lot of effort, but it’s worth it.” she explains from behind you as she’s sitting on a small bench.
There’s a nice little picnic basket set on the ground in front of her. You go and sit down next to her, the cool air brushing against your skin causing goosebumps to form on your arm.
Jamie immediately notices your chilliness and wraps her arm around your waist. She pulls you deep into your side and you smile softly, resting your head on her shoulder. Jamie reaches down slowly to open the picnic basket revealing another bouquet of flowers.
“Hey I actually know these ones!” you exclaim as she pulls out the bouquet of tulips.
She laughs before handing them to you, “Yeah a little too cheesy for my taste, but I thought it was fitting for this.”
“For what?” you ask and she smiles shyly.
“This.” she says softly before getting on knee in front of you and pulling out a ring.
You release a small little gasp before a huge smile breaks out onto your face, “Tulips mean true love, never in a million years Y/N did I ever think I’d find someone like you. My life has been filled of exhaustive people, but you made all this effort and time worth it. And I want it to last longer. I want this feeling to last a lifetime and even after. I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Small tears were falling down both of your cheeks. Nothing sad, but everything happy. You cup her cheeks wiping away the falling tears and smile at her.
“It would be my honor.” you whisper to her and she nods.
“Yeah?” she asks smiling so wide and it’s so bright you think you might go blind.
“Yeah.” you let out and she immediately crashes her lips onto yours.
When you pull apart she slides the ring onto your finger. The two of you rest your foreheads together, the smile never fading.
You reach the supermarket and immediately go to the cereal aisle. You reach up getting Dani’s favorite cereal and Jamie’s favorite. When you’re about to check out your eyes are caught by a bouquet of flowers.
The white little daisies that you have been looking for were right there. Jamie always rants about how much she hates supermarket flowers since they have loads of bad things, but you need these flowers to surprise her. You also see anemones, something that would be perfect for Dani.
You grab both of those bouquets and place them in your basket. After you checkout you make the drive to The Leafling. Opening the door of The Leafling you see Dani standing there, sweeping up the floors.
“Hi welcome to The Leafling!” Dani says with some enthusiasm and you laugh.
“It’s me Dani.” you say and she laughs.
“Oh hi Y/N!” she says embracing you in a hug.
She takes some grocery bags from your hand and helps you bring them upstairs, “Where’s Jamie?” you ask.
“She went to go grab something from the hardware store. Something about not having the right screwdrivers.” she explains and you nod.
The two of you proceed to put all the groceries away. Once you’re finished you grab the blue anemones from the bag you had and gave them to her.
“These are for you.” you whisper and she smiles widely.
“Thank you Y/N! They’re beautiful! What do these ones mean?” she asks and you chuckle.
You take Dani’s hand in yours and give it a small squeeze, “I know you’re struggling Dani. Everything that happened at Bly, what happened to you. You’re my best friend even if Jamie is my wife you will always be my best friend. I don’t want to lose you Dan.” you whisper tears glistening in your eyes, “These mean protection against evil. I can’t lose you.”
She takes you into a big tight hug. Dani holds you close as she rubs your back, “I’m gonna be okay Y/N/N. I promise.”
“Good because you need to be here to meet your niece or nephew.” you whisper and she pulls back from the hug staring at you. Her eyes wide and her mouth agape in shock, “Jamie and I tried the IVF thing that came out. It was a lot of money, but it was worth a shot. I went to the doctor’s before the farmer’s market and it worked Dani.”
Dani immediately hugs you again before letting out a squeal, “No way!” she exclaims, “I am so happy for you!”
“Thank you!” you say smiling and letting out a small chuckle.
The front door unlocks and you know that Jamie is home. She notices the two of you sitting on the couch as she proceeds to wave at the two of you. Jamie puts away her bag of department store gear into the respectable places before noticing the supermarket daisies on the counter.
“Love, how many times do I have to tell you about supermarket flowers?” she asks finally coming over to sit with you guys.
She gives you a chaste kiss and you smile into it. Then she makes her way to Dani before ruffling her hair, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t find them at the farmer’s market. Plus I couldn’t take them from the store. They are for you.” you mention and she smiles.
“For me?” she asks intertwining your hands together and you nod, “What’s the story?”
“Well I remember you telling me that daisies mean innocence, purity, new beginnings-” you begin before she cuts you off.
“And motherhood.” she whispers barely audible and you nod a huge smile on your face.
“I’m pregnant Jamie.” you say and she looks at you like her eyes are about to pop out of her head.
“Baby really?” she asks her voice breaking a little and her lips quirk up into a smile.
“Yes really. You’re gonna be a mom Jamie.” you say nodding and she immediately kisses you deeply and passionately.
She places her hand gently on your stomach before leaning down to talk to him or her, “Hey little fella. I’m your other mom. I can’t wait to meet you.”
You found yourself at the farmer’s market yet again, your baby bump now visible and you were due any minute now.
Your phone began to ring and you immediately answered, “Hello love?” you ask.
“Y/N...” you hear from the other line, Jamie’s voice was somber and you can tell that she has been crying.
“What’s wrong? What happened?” you ask.
“I think we need to drive to Bly.” she whispers into the phone.
“What? Why? Jamie what’s going on?” you ask frantically making your way straight to the car, whatever you needed to buy was long forgotten.
“It’s Dani.” she whispers on the other line and you felt your heart drop into your stomach.
So the two of you found yourself at Bly once more. The lake looking more and more ominous as you stared at it. Jamie kicks off her shoes and starts making her way into the lake.
Jamie shouldn’t have to do this. It’s you. You’re the one who needs to do this, but you can’t. The lake is far too cold and the weather outside wouldn’t help the baby’s health either.
A few moments later Jamie resurfaces from the water. She finds herself on the shore as you immediately wrap a towel around her. Tears flowing down her eyes before she shakes her head.
You let out a sob as she hold you tight. Your sister was gone.
Two weeks later you found yourself at the cemetery in Bly. It was small, but the two of you thought it was fitting. Owen, Henry, Flora and Miles were all there with you.
All six of you stared at the grave before placing flowers onto the tombstone. Jamie thought we should put crocuses onto the grave. It means hope after darkness. After struggling for so long, hopefully this allows her to find rest.
She was buried right by Hannah. Two people you lost to weird place that is Bly Manor.
1 - m o n t h - l a t e r
You sat on the hospital bed holding your newborn baby in your arms. Jamie is standing there smiling at you widely.
After all the darkness and craziness that has been happening, this was the first time you felt hope in a long time. Even though your sister isn’t here physically, you know she’s always here.
“Welcome to the world Danielle Hannah Clayton.” you and Jamie whisper.
The name seemed fitting and you couldn’t help, but feel lighter. She leans over and gives you a small kiss to her forehead.
White jasmine flowers in a vase by the window sill. It means unconditional and eternal love. Jamie picked out the flowers yet again.
It had to be your favorite of all.
The unconditional and eternal love that you and Jamie felt towards each other. The unconditional and eternal love you felt towards your newborn daughter. And the unconditional and eternal love that you, Jamie, and now your daughter Dani felt for the two people you lost.
They aren’t here physically, but you know they’re always here besides you.
The Story, Ch. 5
Previously on The Story
The show was at the largest venue in Bly, an old community center that doubled as town hall, wedding rental, voting station, and almost every other event in between. The bar in the back was composed of tapped kegs in containers of ice and boxes of cheap liquor, while the stage rose only two feet off of the ground on the opposite wall. Old wood beams held up the roof and giant pillars kept all of it standing, solemn and tender as they were, worn soft with age and bodies and heat.
It felt smaller than her elementary school gymnasium, but Dani didn’t mind. The warmth of the bodies that filed in felt safe, as if she could feel every beating heart.
Owen was kind enough to grab the first round, returning with stretched hands full of frothy pint glasses. The lights were dim, just strung up string lights hanging from the rafters, the vents propped open for added fresh air while the ceiling fans wobbled on their stems to keep everyone from roasting. Dani surveyed everything, enjoying how normal it all felt, and how weird it was to be around so many people suddenly. Laughter and conversation boomed and echoed around them, and it, too, was a comfort she hadn’t expected.
There was something different about Jamie, as they sat down at a small, lopsided table in the corner, the whole party oddly anxious all around to be away from the house for the first time in a long time. But Dani picked up on a different kind of anxiety in the gardener. She knew it was about the rarely-seen sibling, but she also didn’t know how to fix that. Something told her she couldn’t help despite her desire to do it. Jamie hadn’t given her enough to be someone that could make this better.
“It’s pretty full. He must be fairly well-known,” Dani offered as Jamie went half in on her drink quickly.
“This is the only thing happening tonight,” she disagreed. “Not much entertainment coming through Bly. They’ll take anything they can get.”
“I’m excited for some music,” Owen decided. “Time to cut a rug and such.”
“I don’t know if I’ll remember how,” Hannah sighed wistfully before taking a demure sip of her beer. “Can’t keep up with the new stuff.”
“What kind of music does he play?” Dani turned to Jamie who stared at the swirling mass of people. “Jamie?”
Startled slightly by the hand on her thigh, Jamie followed the touch up the arm to the au pair’s amused gaze and cleared her throat.
“Oh, he grew up play traditional stuff back home. Kinda branched out all over. He mostly is just in the band. This is his first band where he’s been the lead. Calls himself a Swiss Army knife of a musician. Whatever books him the gig for the next few months.”
“It’s going to be fun,” Dani promised, quieter this time, just fo Jamie. “I’m sure he’s excited to see you.”
“Or he needs a kidney or money.”
“Maybe,” she shrugged, squeezing the leg in her palm. “But at least we get a night off.”
The gang relaxed into their spot as the hour ticked on toward show time, while still more locals filled the hall, milling about, drinking and existing for a rush. Jamie, too, relaxed slightly despite her constant looking out over the crowd for familiar faces. Dani moved her hand to take a drink from her glass and didn’t put it back, but the length of their arms rested together, squished at the table. Jamie thought about that a lot.
They were four friends, not coworkers. They were four friends, being themselves, and it was a wonderful feeling for them all.
By the time the band took the stage, their table had the remnants of three rounds of trips to the bar, and while not exceeding drunk, they were laughing more than ever before.
Jamie looked at her brother as he took to the mic for just a minute before turning to the au pair, oddly vulnerable in the moment. She watched Dani stretch her neck to get a better view as the lanky young man put a guitar strap over his shoulder and introduced himself.
“That’s him,” Jamie nodded. “Mikey.”
“You have the same chin,” Dani decided, turning her eyes to the gardener beside her, appraising her, strictly for comparison’s sake. “And... “ she smiled. “The same eyes.”
“Are you blind? His are painfully brown.”
“No, not the color,” she shook her head. “This part.”
Jamie felt her smile falter as finger tips touched just under her eyes and moved around to her brow, causing the furrow to soften. She just watched Dani smile softly with her observation.
“You have eyes like a forest. Sometimes green, sometimes brown, sometimes gold, sometimes all of them at once. It’s oddly fitting. I think you might be made of the woods.”
It knocked her out to hear that. Jamie filed every word, every shape of every syllable to keep to herself and replay all night. The whole thing. The smell of the drinks on their breath. The feeling of the skin on her brow. The fact that Dani was less than a foot from her face and that was the closest they’d ever been. The way the lights overhead made her hair glow white almost, or golden sometimes. And the words. No one ever took the time to say something like that to her, but it was said so factually, so unlike a line, that it felt like maybe it was a fact. That Dani was someone who could make facts true.
“Excuse me--”
Dani looked away before Jamie did. Time didn’t quite matter at that point, because the gardener had forgotten even where she was.
“We already have drinks, thanks,” Dani dismissed the man at the table.
“I already know I’ll strike out with this one,” the stranger nudged his head toward Jamie. “But I was hoping for a dance from her beautiful friend.”
“Fuck off, Tommy,” Jamie slumped back in her chair as the music swirled to a new height, louder than should have been allowed.
“See what I mean?” he teased.
Dani looked to Jamie who just shrugged and relented.
“We play darts at the pub. He’s a shite dancer and darts player.”
“I don’t know,” Dani politely shook her head, bashful suddenly.
“I’m a great dancer,” he promised. “I’ll show you around.”
“First one to dance with the American wins the pot, yeah?” Jamie looked over his shoulder at the table she knew to be the regulars about town. “How much?”
“I’d never partake,” he promised, holding out his hand.
“Go on,” Hannah encouraged the au pair. “Quite a strapping young man.”
“I’ll be coming back for you,” Tommy nodded toward the housekeeper.
With one more glance at the gardener, Dani tentatively took the hand extended to her. She was tugged out to the dance floor, laughing and holding on for dear life, much to Jamie’s chagrin, which she buried deep down as she tried to make herself watch her brother perform.
“I suppose I better get my dance in while I can before that goliath comes back,” Owen stood, offering a hand to the housekeeper.
“I’m all left feet,” Hannah shook her head.
“Perfect. I’m alright.”
The guitar twanged, and drums kept a beat, and the classic noises of their festivals were spun into a modern kind of feeling, alive and new but still with the steps and changes. Whatever the people had expected, this wasn’t it, and perhaps they were surprised and grateful for it. Mikey’s voice was deeper than Jamie remembered, deeper than the sparse phonecalls separated by months. He looked like their mother. He looked like his father more, and that man was a stranger to Jamie.
But for the life of her, she wasn’t sure how he did it-- how he turned the entire place alive.
XXXXXXXXXX
James was tall. Much too tall, Dani realized as they danced together. But he was sweet and polite, careful to ask the basic questions, compliment her enough. He made it to the second song before he was interrupted with a request for her hand by another strapping young man in a stripped shirt.
For some reason, Dani accepted despite the annoyance of being away from her table. When she looked over, she saw Jamie alone, slouched there, but intently watching her brother. From the table, the gardener chanced a look to see the smiling au pair, glowing and effervescent as all hell. Dani kept a distance with her dancing partner, Benny from the grocer down the block.
By the third partner, Jamie was beyond annoyed. She didn’t like the way Dani held their hands, nor did she appreciate how the boys smiled and were so polite and she kept the smile on for them.
Only when James made his pitch to the newest woman in town, did Jamie decide that it was enough, that she couldn’t handle the fearful but polite look of the au pair, that she didn’t want to see anyone else, that she wanted to be the last one dancing with the American.
“May I?”
Dani looked toward the voice as James put some space between them finally. Gallant and cocky, Jamie challenged him to say no. The song swirled around them all in the stand off, outliers in the moving mass.
“Yes, of course,” Dani nodded, dropping her hands and nodding politely to the gentleman caller who took it well enough for her sake.
Satisfied at her handiwork, Jamie gave him a smirk as he rolled his eyes in his defeat. She held onto the victory as best she could, aware that it now meant touching the au pair, and she hadn’t particularly planned on this part of the endeavour.
“Looked like you’d seen a ghost. Thought I might save you if you didn’t mind.”
“He… he looked like…”
“James looks like everyone. That’s his curse, you know? Destined to be a fill-in despite my best coaching to find him a proper bride.”
Dani gave up thinking about it. She didn’t want to anymore as Jamie held her hand and pushed her hip, spinning her out, exaggerated and right on time. By the time she was pulled back, all was gone with the past and what remained was just that second.
“How was my delivery this time?” the gardener asked with a wiggle of her eyebrows. “I’ve been practicing after my last report card.”
“Much better.”
“I can always call him back over and we can try again, if you’d like to provide notes.”
“That’d ruin the follow through.”
“Ah, right,” she sighed. “I suppose I’ll just have to keep saving you then, if that’s alright? Strictly for revision.”
“Strictly,” Dani nodded, fighting her smile though it burst forth a little.
The song shifted to the next, but neither moved, neither let go. The lights flickered slightly overhead, the ancient electrical system unaccustomed to the weight of the music and the mood. Dani softened in Jamie’s hand. She wasn’t sure how, or where it all came from, but she took a breath and washed away the nagging feeling that she was doing something wrong. She was out with friends and the music was good and the night was happening.
The gardener adjusted their pace, deftly moving them in a way Dani hadn’t expected her to be capable of doing. What was revealed just showed the multitudes that remained hidden, perhaps under lock and key, from the average passerby. But Dani was set to investigate, no matter the cost.
They moved in a comfortable quiet, until Dani realized she was closer than she’d been with anyone all night, and for the first time it hadn’t felt like work. She ran her thumb along the worn fabric of Jamie’s shirt, willing herself to remember just that, just the threadbare feeling and the smell of sawdust and begonia.
“Did he call you a ‘bonnie lass’?” Jamie asked, pressed close. Dani swallowed as a hand moved to her hip. “Try his exaggerated accent and tender Scottish boy routine on you? Call you beautiful beyond compare?”
“How did you know?”
The smirk appeared, only this time Dani was so close she could practically miss it. Her nose nearly touched a dimpled cheek. The heat from the crowded bar and the last vestiges of summer made the moist ends of Jamie’s hair even curlier. The au pair held onto her shoulder and felt a squeeze on her hand as they moved to the pace of the music.
“Taught him everything he knows, Poppins.”
Dani chuckled and shook her head, pushing away slightly though she didn’t make it far, the tight grip of the gardener keeping her still as the song began to close.
“His accent was quite charming.”
“And ye’ don’t like mine?” Again she leaned closer. Dani could smell the sweat and Jamie-like scent on her skin, just beneath the beer and heat and wood of the bar. As the music grew quieter and the applause rose, Dani felt the tickle of breath on her neck. “Do you need someone to tell you how beautiful you are? Do you not know, Dani?”
“I…”
“It has been an absolute pleasure to play our songs for you tonight,” Mikey interrupted the applause. “We have just a few more for you to enjoy. Thought we could do an old favorite, spice it up a bit and really wear down these old floor boards if you’re interested.”
The arms that were holding her up loosened and Dani was left in a daze as Jamie whistled and hooted, so that all the au pair could do was wake from the haze of the bright dance floor and squished bodies and weakly clap as well.
In the middle of the entire group of happy, dancing humans, Dani felt, for an absolute instant, that she was free. Her hand was still on Jamie’s shoulder until she snatched it away, remembering herself. Someone shifted, and she saw Eddie’s face in the crowd for a split second, and the warmth that seemed to emanate from her very core went cold, like water on a fire.
A drowsy guitar chord began, lazy and somewhat more old-fashioned than the previous set. Before Dani could escape it, she was stuck, and a beaming gardener turned to her.
“M’lady,” Jamie held out her hand after a formal and deep bow.
Dani took her hand and looked around to remind herself it wasn’t real.
“I, uh, I don’t know the steps,” Dani whispered, fumbling slightly.
“Good thing it doesn’t matter then,” Jamie promised. “Keep up and find me, yeah?”
“Find you?”
“Aye, you’re the hen in this fox house.”
By the time the drums kicked in, Dani felt herself relax in Jamie’s gentle guiding, the music and her smile infecting her completely. Just as she was getting the hang of it, Mikey’s dulcet tone humming and vibrating the very rafters with the stamping of feet. And despite herself, the warmth came back to Dani as the chorus rang out. She lifted the hem of her dress slightly as she bounded around, completing the steps, stomping the rhythm out.
It was sometime at the beginning of the second verse that Dani felt herself tossed, moved around from dancer to dancer, spun and laughing so loud she thought she wasn’t making a sound because the music drowned it out. She was dipped and spun, with various sized hands on the small of her back, and twisting her hand as she moved from suitor to suitor and with every passing chord she felt free and light, she felt like she was floating. Each caller seemed more eager than the one before, and Dani lost track of time itself.
She lost sight of Jamie in it all, and dismissed Eddie’s visage in the dark corner for a moment as Owen snagged her, carefully tugging her back to the present and maybe the future, his movements no where near as easy and agile as the gardeners despite his best efforts. He lasted about ten seconds before her hips were encircled by strong arms, and Hannah found her a few seconds later, both out of breath and  brimming with warmth before Owen spun to her as well.
And it didn’t matter that she hadn’t a partner for a few moments as Dani allowed herself this second, to not catch her breath but rather keep losing it. She felt her cheeks aching from expressing more joy than she had perhaps ever before in her life, right there, on the unsanded and stained old floorboards of the ancient community center. The lights were too bright, too hot, the fans ineffective against August and the bodies who didn’t seem to mind. Dust kicked up and floated around them while the walls seemed to shake and move with them, allowing such jubilee. It was unexpected, to suddenly be alive. Unexpected and confusing and overwhelming.
In the middle of all of the bodies and all of the bliss, Dani found herself trying to remember the last time she’d danced, truly, honestly, painfully, deliriously, deafly danced.
“I thought I told you to find me, Poppins,” a low voice murmured against the shell of her ear.
Jamie was her favorite dancing partner. It was no contest really. The other dancers were great in their own ways, but never quite right;  some were too tall, and some too short, some not fast enough, and others were too slow. None of them had the smile. None of them chased away the guilt of being alive. Her smile was infectious and only made Dani’s bigger. The drinks of the evening were coming to a head into a perfect timing of buzzing beneath her skin and feet. It was Jamie who made the magic, and only right there did Dani realize it.
“I can barely see straight,” Dani laughed, her smile poking her own ears, her movements a little more haphazard, but she didn’t care because Jamie met each and every one of them. She knew the steps now and she couldn't be bothered to care.
The music slowed for a moment, but the crowd knew it was just gathering it’s momentum, and Dani inhaled the calm as Jamie spun her and clung, their hips close.
“This is the best part,” the gardener promised, shuffling them along. Chests heaved to catch breath. From beneath her lashes, she looked at Dani and noted the pink of her cheeks and the red of her lips.
Sweat slicked the curls to Jamie’s forehead, the tan of her skin not at all hiding the blush of her chest.
“Am I going to be hunted again?”
“With a face like that? Yeah, I’d say so.”
“Don’t let go then.”
As much as she wanted to freeze time, it wouldn’t, and the song continued, exploding into noise for the finale. A small curl of the guitar grew quicker, prepared to grow louder until the drums came back in. Dani didn’t hear Jamie’s response, but rather felt the grip tighten. And all hell broke loose, bodies ducking and dodging and moving. Dani tossed back her head as Jamie spun her again and again and again until it stopped with no more than a whimper.
As soon as it ended, Dani wobbled before tossing her arms around Jamie’s neck and laughing there. She let herself be spun once again, her dress flowing around her knees as the crowd applauded and cheered, the laughter milling between it all.
“Didn’t know you could move like that,” Jamie chuckled.
“Me neither,” Dani confided, still slightly amazed.
“Seems like you needed it.”
“I did.”
The next song began and with a little less confidence than before, Jamie held out her hand again.
“Unless you’d like a break,” she offered. “I’d go for a pint--”
Dani took her hand and moved closer again. There wasn’t the rumble of the song among the people, there weren’t steps to it, just two people pressed tightly against the rest of the room.
“I don’t want to stop moving,” Dani sighed, resting her cheek on the gardener’s shoulder. “It’s safe here.”
She didn’t get to see the small smile that Jamie had as she stood a little straighter, grateful her brother knew enough to play a slower song after such a commotion.
“I suspect you might have a few attempts to interrupt.”
“Please don’t let go,” Dani shook her head.
“It’s going to get another thumper in a minute.”
“Good.”
“You better hold on tight.”
XXXXXXXXX
The town of Bly was nearly quiet until the bar spilled open and from the large doors, a wave of overheated bodies washed out onto the lane, pouring into every direction as the drinks were cut off and the music finally ended. It was a clear and warm night, with thin clouds occasionally hiding the stars, creating patches that tore at the evening intermittently. The respectable crowd was already in bed, and the rowdy bunch set about slinking home.
With a bit of nerves, Jamie bit at the skin of her thumb as she toed where the dirt met the grass near the fence beneath the old lamps that led back into the town proper. Cars began humming past, kicking up dust as they dispersed despite a few roaming gaggles of drunk and laughing friends.
It’d been nearly a decade since she’d danced so much or had that much fun. It was still swirling in her head as she came back down to earth. The continual spinning could only be attributed to the au pair and her laugh, how it bounced around the room, better than the music, and how carefree she looked, moving with such freedom it betrayed all of her power walking through the manor. It was entirely a new problem, Jamie realized, to see such a tightly wound thing break away because she was perfect before, and now it was… it was…
She sighed and dug for the smushed pack of cigarettes in her back pocket. She just wasn’t going to think about any of it and blame everything on the stiff drinks and mixture of alcohol and music. It worked for the puritans.
“Your brother was pretty good,” Dani offered, taking a seat on the fence. “He got all of the talent then?”
“I’d like to see him grow three varieties of orchids,” the gardener murmured as she stuck a cigarette between her lips and began the curious search for her lighter.
“I meant musically. You are clearly a talented dancer and botanist and camper and trainer of young men in the art of flirting.”
She couldn’t help but smile as she met Dani’s eyes during that list. She fiddled with the cigarette, wiggling it between her teeth as she leaned against the fence. Her shoulder touched Dani’s leg, where the hem of her dress fell on bare knees.
“Must be from the other half of his genetics.”
The flick of the lighter effectively ended the conversation, or at least she hoped, shielding it from the nearly non-existent breeze out of practiced habit. She took a long drag and tilted her head up to add to the flimsy collection of clouds hidden in the dark behind the streetlight.
“Thank you for tonight,” Dani offered amidst the quiet.
“I didn’t do anything but bring you to a lowbrow night at the opera. Not sure it’s in need of any gratefulness.”
With another drag, Jamie shook her head and crossed her arm over her middle. Dani reached over and pulled the cigarette from her fingers before taking a deep drag herself. Elegantly, like a professional, she fiddled with it, furrowing at the burning end. Jamie hadn’t ever thought to imagine such a sight from the tight pony tail in human form. But now that she had seen it, she didn’t want to imagine anything else.
“Thank you for tonight,” she repeated, handing it back.
“You’re welcome. Thanks for… thanks for coming.”
“I want to dance more.”
“Lucky for you, I know a guy who can pluck a fine tune,” Jamie stood a little taller. “I’ll go fire up the band again.”
“No no, stop,” the au pair laughed, tugging Jamie’s arm back from her faux errand. “I meant in general. I need more moments to feel… to not see… for--” Despite the smile on her face, Dani struggled to find the right way to say what mattered. Helplessly, amused at it all, she looked to the gardener.
“To feel invincible.”
“Yeah, that.”
In almost quiet they passed the cigarette back and forth until Jamie tossed it to the ground, snubbing it with the toe of her shoe.
“I should go find Hannah and Owen, get a ride back to the Manor.”
“I was-- I could take you.”
“Enjoy some time with your brother,” Dani reminded her as she hopped down, her hand firm on Jamie’s shoulder for support with the maneuver. “It’ll probably be another six years before you see him again.”
“I’ll see you around then.”
“Seems bound to happen at some point. “
Still brimming and smiling, Dani twirled as she made her way toward the car and Hannah’s form waving in the distance.
“Night,” Jamie offered weakly, sure it never reached the target who was humming and dancing her way across the field that acted as a parking lot. She leaned over the fence and folded her arms, waiting and watching.
“And thank you for being my fox tonight,” Dani called, turning back again and bowing, exaggerated as Jamie had on the dance floor.
Her laugh trailed off, wafting along in the breeze, dipping and winding its way between the branches and leaves and gone, evaporated into the night and among the clouds and the smoke they’d shared.
Passchendaele - Special Delivery
A/N We’ve been introduced to Corbyn’s children in this universe but not Daniel’s yet! So here’s a look into the birth of the first Seavey baby 🤍
February 9, 1918
Daniel sat at the kitchen table, alone, a mug of cooling tea in hand as he stared at the table top and listening to the muffled screams of his wife upstairs. It was the early hours of the morning and Elizabeth had woken up in immense pain and they called the midwife over to check her out. Sure enough, she was in labour and Daniel was sent downstairs to give her privacy while she laboured and delivered. Sitting alone in their cold kitchen was nearly torturous to Daniel, Elizabeth’s agonising moans making him nearly sick to his stomach.
He finally got up from the table and ascended the stairs slow step by slow step before turning left into the small upstairs hallway and peeked through the half open bedroom door. Elizabeth was on the bed drenched in sweat, her nightgown pushed up over her large stomach as she breathed heavily, flushed face looking up at the midwife as she checked her out. The shadow in the doorway had the women looking over at him and Daniel almost startled at their sudden stares. He kept his wide eyes on Elizabeth, expressionless and frightened and she could barely offer him a reassuring smile.
“Mama-to-be needs some privacy.” The midwife instructed as calmly as she could for the third time since she had arrived to their house that morning, walking over to the door to step between Daniel and his longing gaze to his labouring wife. “We will call you when baby is delivered, alright?”
Daniel couldn’t even get a word out before the door was shut in his face. He stood in the hallway for a moment longer, both hands resting against the doorframe to hold himself up as Elizabeth groaned into another painful contraction. The screams of agony were all too familiar for Daniel and he wanted nothing more than to be in that room with her and do it all for her instead.
He returned back downstairs and went right to the telephone to ring Corbyn, needing some sort of distraction before he went insane. As a father of one with a second on the way, Corbyn knew the routine of birth well and Daniel needed all the help he could get.
So Corbyn showed up as quickly as he could, letting himself into the small house to join Daniel in the kitchen who was drinking his third cup of tea.
“Hey, mate. How’s it going?” Corbyn said.
A shout from upstairs answered his question.
“No baby yet?”
“Not yet.” Daniel mumbled, setting his mug down and swirled his fingertip around the rim of it. Corbyn sat down at the table beside him.
“You wouldn’t want to be in there anyway.” Corbyn assured him. “Won’t be able to look at her the same way ever again.”
“She sounds so…frightened.” Daniel said, glancing towards the stairs as Elizabeth let out another strained scream. “Just like the men on the front lines. Christ, Corbs, what if she doesn’t make it?”
“Hey. Don’t say that.” Corbyn tisked. “Lizzie’s strong, you know that. She’s gonna have a nice healthy baby and live to tell the tale, okay?”
Corbyn’s promise didn’t mean much without honest and realistic truth and Daniel just kept his eyes down.
“Come on, I brought cards.” Corbyn pulled the deck from his jacket pocket and dropped them on the kitchen table before pulling out a cigarette and setting it between his teeth. “Give ‘er a shuffle, Daniel.”
Daniel sighed and shuffled the deck as Corbyn lit his cigarette before dealing out a few cards to each of them and they started up for the game. Daniel wasn’t completely focussed when Elizabeth’s cries were only getting louder and more desperate with time but Corbyn held out the second half of his cigarette and Daniel took a thankful puff before passing it back. They shared the smoke until it was finished and Daniel was struggling through their card game, too focussed on his wife’s screams and moans from upstairs.
After many long minutes, the sudden cry that filled the house had Daniel’s head shooting up, eyes wide and staring right into Corbyn’s. Corbyn cracked a smile at his friend’s shocked and nearly even more frightened face, the cries of the new baby echoing through the kitchen from the second floor.
“Looks like you’re a daddy.” Corbyn reached over to pat his friend on the shoulder in congratulations.
Daniel’s eyes shifted his eyes from his friend to the stairs as silence fell through the house and the baby’s cries were the only sound. Corbyn just watched Daniel’s pale face with a calm smile, knowing perfectly well how it felt to be in his position, realising you were a father for the first time. The midwife soon appeared on the stairs with a calm smile.
“Ready to come meet your baby?”
Daniel’s bottom lip trembled for a moment but he nodded lightly. He took one last glance at Corbyn who nodded him on.
Daniel stood up from the table, resting his hand of cards down before following the midwife up the stairs and down the small hallway on the second floor of the house. She led him into the master bedroom and stepped aside to let him move forward on his own.
Elizabeth was sitting up in bed, her hair brushed back from her face and her cheeks pink and stained in light tears but she was smiling, only grinning even more at the sight of Daniel as he walked slowly over to the bedside. She reached out one hand to hold his, her other arm tucked around the tiny baby wrapped in a blanket. Daniel didn’t even know what to say, staring down at the brand-new sleeping newborn held in his tired wife’s arms.
“Dani,” Elizabeth spoke softly up to him, “meet your son.”
Daniel let a small gasp fall from his lips, tears welling in his eyes as he watched the baby squirm slightly in the swaddle.
“My son?” he breathed, his voice shaking.
“Yeah.” Elizabeth smiled warmly up at him, giving his hand a loving squeeze. “Would you like to hold him?”
“I don’t…I don’t know…” Daniel whispered, taking a small step back.
“It’s okay.” Elizabeth said as his hand fell out of hers. She looked down to the baby in her arms and adjusted the blanket around his face before looking back over at Daniel.
His hesitation was apparent, keeping his hands behind his back as if he was at attention, but his stare unbreaking from the baby. His bottom lip was tight between his teeth as if he was fighting with himself in his mind if he wanted to risk holding the newborn. The baby let out a small cry and Daniel took another step back with surprise as if he had done something wrong.
Elizabeth was right there to soothe the baby as if it was natural to her, shushing him and rocking him softly. Daniel watched her with wide eyes, nervousness bubbling up in his stomach.
“Come here, darling.” Elizabeth said, looking back over at Daniel.
“I’m gonna hurt him.”
“Oh my goodness, you’re not going to hurt him.” Elizabeth chucked lightly.
“Yes, I am.” Daniel said strongly, his voice wavering.
Elizabeth turned to the midwife across the room who was staring at their interaction with concerned surprise, “May you give us a moment of privacy please?”
The midwife nodded and shuffled out of the room, closing the bedroom door behind her and leaving the young couple to themselves. Elizabeth sighed and kept her eyes on her husband and his shimmering tears that were brimming, his unbreakable stare on the newborn.
“Daniel, I want you to hold our baby.”
Daniel shook his head, “I’m going to hurt him and I won’t be able to forgive myself.”
“Why do you think you’re going to hurt him?” Elizabeth asked.
“I…he’s so small and fragile…” Daniel breathed. “And I’m a murderer.”
“You are not a murderer.” Elizabeth scolded gently. “I did not marry a murderer.”
Daniel sniffled.
“Come on over here.”
Daniel shuffled closer to her bedside and she straightened up a little to get her hands secure under the baby and carefully held him out towards him. Daniel bent down habitually to reach for him as the baby’s small squirming made him nervous that he was going to fall from Elizabeth’s tired arms. He took the baby before he could even second guess, his eyes going wide as he held the newborn for the first time, how warm and real he felt in his arms and his small squirming having Daniel hold him closer to his chest.
Elizabeth sat back and smiled warmly up at them, watching Daniel stare down at his new son with so much emotion in his eyes.
“See? You’re a natural.” Elizabeth whispered.
Daniel glanced up at her before leaning down a little to press a small kiss to the baby’s forehead, smiling softly to himself as he melted into a more comfortable state around the newborn. Elizabeth shuffled over carefully to give him room to sit down beside her on the bed and he did, not taking his eyes off the baby’s sleeping face.
“Isn’t he sweet?” Elizabeth smiled softly, running her hand over the baby’s little hat that covered his head.
“He’s beautiful.” Daniel breathed.
They sat quietly together, just admiring their new arrival. Daniel moved carefully to pull down the front of the tight swaddle to let the baby’s arms out, smiling bashfully as he stretched them above his head with a small yawn and Daniel gently ran his finger over the back of his tiny hand.
“Have you thought of any names?” Elizabeth asked quietly.
Daniel didn’t hesitate before answering, “I want to name him after my brother.”
“Okay.” Elizabeth smiled, running her hand up his arm and pressed her palm to his flushed cheek adoringly. Daniel leaned into her touch.
“Maybe as his middle name.” Daniel added.
“That would be nice.” Elizabeth agreed.
Corbyn stayed downstairs for a while, waiting for any news, offering the midwife a cup of tea as they let the new parents have a moment to themselves. After a slightly awkward conversation, the midwife headed back upstairs to check on things, leaving Corbyn alone at the table. He wasn’t going to leave until he made sure everything was okay and Daniel was settled into his brand new scary role as father.
Soon, the stairs creaked slightly as Daniel returned to the kitchen, moving very slowly down each step as he carried the small bundle in his arms. When he was safely on the main floor, he smiled over at Corbyn and shuffled over to introduce him to the baby.
Corbyn stood up from the table to meet him halfway, leaning over to get a good look at the baby who was now awake and blinking up at his surroundings with light blue eyes.
“He’s quite a looker, Daniel.” Corbyn complimented with a wide grin, “Does the little fella have a name yet?”
“Charles Christian Seavey. We’re gonna call him Charlie.” Daniel whispered, smiling down at his son with nothing but pride.
hi! prompt 22 or 28 on random in the olenna cinematic universe that is the rose next door! tysm for doing this <3
Haha this might be a little mean. 🙈 also for @nlights37 whose commentary on a certain wildling may have ending up in here.
22. Good thing I didn’t ask for your opinion AND 26. The diamond in your engagement ring is fake. 😂
////
Olenna was watering her beautiful lilies in the front yard when the woman showed up.
It was a little silver car that looked like a toy; pulled right into the driveway next door, marched up to the front door, banged on it shouting: "Crow! Open up!" Then when no one answered-- because apparently 'Crow' no longer lived there as it had been vacant for two years-- the woman marched towards her car. The yard looked pristine, she couldn't fault the woman for thinking someone was still there. Olenna refused to let the house look unkempt just because Jon Snow had trouble selling it.
She kept watering, gazing over curiously. It was the redhead. The one who used to be with her neighbor before he wisely upgraded to a newer, improved model. The woman didn't look at her, but called across the street at Davos, who had just pulled into his drive, and was removing grocery bags. "Hey! Sailor guy!"
Olenna snorted. "You know dear, if you had manners, you might get what you asked for." She finished with the hose and dropped it, walking casually to the property line, the woman peering shrewdly towards her. She smiled politely, while Davos watched uncertainty from the drive. "Olenna Tyrell, my dear, what can I do for you?"
The redhead scowled. "I'm looking for Snow."
"So go up north they have a lot there."
She scowled. "Jon Snow. I'm Ygritte Wilde, his girlfriend."
"Well his wife will be curious to know that." Olenna cocked her head, scanning the woman up and down. She looked like a little boy. She waved her finger at the strange overall combo she wore with dirty shoes and her scraggly red hair in a fraying braid. "What is this you're wearing?"
The woman drew back, surprised. Her mouth fell slightly. "Clothes, why?"
"With your body shape you might want to not wear something that appears as though you're wearing a garbage sack" The woman gaped. Olenna clarified, in case she was stupid. "You look like a little boy. Acting like one too, mouth like that.:
Davos had appeared at her side. "Olenna!" he exclaimed.
"What?"
The woman frowned, pointing. "You're the old bat that lives next door."
"Yes you're quite sharp, sharp as my dull rose clippers."
Davos stepped between them, damn him. "Davos Seaworth. You're Ms. Wilde, yes?"
"Ygritte!"
They all looked over at the other house, Jon coming out, holding his daughter on his hp. Ygritte's lip curled, annoyed. He stomped over, irritated. "I told you to come to my house."
"So I did," she replied, sweetly. Too sweet, for Olenna's tastes. She knew a manipulator when she saw one. Ygritte narrowed her eyes on the baby. "Oh, your daughter."
"Come here lass," Davos said, taking the squirming toddler from Jon. The baby was rather cute, Olenna had to admit. He glared at her. "Olenna, why don't you come help me get my groceries out of the car?"
"Get them yourself, you're capable." She turned to Ygritte. She smiled again. "How can I help you?"
Jon tried to step between them, but she blocked him. "Olenna, thanks I got it."
Ygritte flashed her left hand, which had a large diamond on it. Olenna narrowed her eyes on it. She didn't like this at all. "Crow, I'm very busy, I have things to do. I've got your stuff, tell Tormund not to use me like a delivery service." She flicked at her chipped nails. "I've got a wedding to plan you know."
"Yeah I heard, congratulations."
"The diamond in your engagement ring is fake."
They all thought she wasn't there again. They stared, horrified. Olenna blinked. "What? It is. I can tell a mile away. You're not fooling anyone darling, you think you can make Jon Snow jealous? Do you know how long it took me and this one here--" She jerked her thumb to Davos, who looked ready to die. "-- to get this idiot--" a jerk towards Snow, who was burying his fac ein his hands. "--to realize that he was bloody in love with the blonde over there?" A jerk now to Daenerys, who had come out to see the commotion. She arched her brows, smirking. "You have nothing on me dear. Now, whatever it is you need, finish it and leave."
Little Aly cooed. She chuckled, taking her from Davos, who was stunned. "Come here darling, come to Auntie Olenna. Let's get you some lemon cakes." She glanced at them all; Dany had rushed over now. She frowned. "What are you all staring at? Get to it."
Davos followed after her, while the couple next door spoke with the redhead, who still looked horrified. "You are so rude. And mean. That was uncalled for."
"So is her presence. I hate people who can't scheme properly." Olenna sat Aly down on a chair at the table and began to prepare her a plate of lemon cakes. She narrowed her eyes on the redhead. "Didn't like her when she was here, don't like her now."
"You think she has a shot to try to get him back?" Davos snorted. "Think again. I thought you were smart."
"Oh I am. I appreciate her effort." She pondered it for a moment and smiled, leaving Aly and going back down the path to where they all were. She waved again. Ygritte looked wary; Jon and Dany looked annoyed. "Jon, dear, didn't you say you were still having trouble selling your place?"
He scowled. "Yes Olenna. And you know why."
They all claimed she drove off the potential buyers. Lies, absolute lies. The Baratheons, the Martells, that Baelish character, and the strange redhead who she thought was a witch, they all didn't buy it for their own reasons. Not because of anything she did. preposterous. She patted his arm. "Dear boy, that's sweet you think a little old lady like myself would be involved in such nefarious things." She studied Ygritte. With some work, she might do alright. She reached for her. "Come dear, let me show you the house. Tell me about yourself."
"Um, Crow?"
Jon and Dany were horrified. "Olenna no," Dany whispered.
"Oh don't you two worry. Go make me another sweet baby like that one up there. I've got this." She patted Ygritte's arm, the woman bewildered. They walked over to the house, Ygritte saying she didn't need to see it, she already knew what it looked like. Olenna had no interest in actually trying to get her to buy the damn place. She just saw a potential problem and was dealing with it. Once they were in the yard, away from everyone else, she turned, polite as ever. "Now, let's cut the shit. You've got good form, but you need work. Fake engagement to make him jealous? Please. Trying to get him to be interested by weaseling your way in with some long forgotten item of his you need to drop off? Ha! Amateaur work." She kept her voice soft, gentle, and watched the light go out of Ygritte's eyes, realizing she'd been had. "Now, those two are happy, in love, and I spent countless hours getting them together and all I want is another damn baby to spoil. So, you will turn around and drive away, and if you even think of trying to do a damn thing to those two I will find you and ruin you and you'll really need to get those rabbit teeth of yours fixed."
Ygritte gaped. "I don't think you have any call to try to tell me what to do."
"Hmm, that's adorable. Good thing I didn't ask for your opinion." She beamed. "Come on then. Have a cup of tea before you depart."
Hi. I have a weird ask, only if you have time for it, of course.
I was wondering what are your favourite/most memoriable quotes from Bly Manor are and also, what are your absolute favourites/meaningful?
Thank you!!
I think my absolute favorite of all is “we’re heading into the dark, and we have to hang on to each other, so we can only carry so much.” I think that sums up the entire idea of this little family, made up entirely of people who have been through Some Shit, and still love each other so much. Also the narrator’s bit about finding someone you can be tired around. And the final exchange about getting through life with and without your forever person.
I’m also really attached to some of Dani’s little moments, but I think that’s more delivery than the quotes themselves. The way she delivers the whole speech about “there’s just too many of them; I could make a difference with just two” cracks my heart. Owen’s observation about anchors and burdens gets me; Jamie’s “I’ll feel everything for the both of us” on the heels of Dani’s “I’m so tired” speech. And I really appreciate Rebecca’s “no one should ever need that much help”.
Also, not a line, but I absolutely love the piano cue right as Dani whips her head around when Jamie says “good” in the greenhouse. It’s a perfect musical/performance moment.
hi! i don’t know if you already answered this (and im so sorry if you did!) but i was just wondering what your favorite and least favorite portrayals of all the skamverse characters were and why?
oh hi anon! i haven’t actually answered this ahahha all day i only answered when people told me their faves and never counted mine. this might take a long time to answer because i have to think and reply so long so sorry for replying late in advance...
eva:
favourite is lisa. she just started the whole thing and she was so real and authentic in her portrayal like everything she did felt so fitting with eva nothing less and nothing more. i would give a special shoutout to ludovica just cause she is my fave eva and i think she added a good comedic acting and edge to her character.
least fave might be alba not because she did so bad but because i didn’t connect with her character much. idk either the acting or the writing didn’t resonate with me she felt a little too plain. but maybe i need to do a rewatch. and anyway she grew on me.
noora:
favourite is nicole. she showed us how much nora faded away and a hollow ghost of her came forward throughout her seasons. the change in nore is apparent even in her posture, her tone.
least fave benedetta. kinda ironic because skamit is one of my top 2 remakes but yeah she didn’t work on me at all in s3. i didn’t buy most of her scenes which is a shame because she was good in s1 and she had good chemistry with the edoardo actor.
isak:
favourite is tarjei, definitely. there was something about his portrayal that made me feel like watching a documentary and no remake reached that level. he was so nuanced and a lot of his emotions were in the little mimics, looks and gestures. axel and michi are a close seconds.
i can’t choose a least fave here. i mean i like all the isaks in their own way. i don’t think any of them were like bad. i wish we got to see florian too. or or if we are counting lucas rubio is a isak remake then alejandro isn’t good as the extra clips show...sorry.
sana:
favourite is tua. she had the heart eyes for mohammed, she had such easy chemistry with him. but then she played amira’s anger and her pain and her pain through her anger in the henna party and the break up with mohammed so well.
least fave ugh maybe assa? this probably has more to do with the writing then her acting but idk there was something there that didn’t communicate her relationship with sofiane or her anger to me.
jonas:
favourite anselm. i literally spent the day praising him...the thing is while michi and lilly are easing into their roles in s1 anselm already seems to portray jonas so well. like he is so relaxed and natural in his role. and then he added a ton to jonas with his softness and his funny side. kudos to the breakup with hanna + coming out scene. with ludovico as a close second because he made giovanni his own too.
least favourite nathan bouts. i swear this has less to do with writing and more with acting. i find him similar to reiky’s jonas and while reiky communicated the loveable asshole vibes to me nathan didn’t. maybe he had better material to play with in s3 it would be different.
william:
favourite is nathan. i might like alejandro's william more as a character but nathan did the best with the not much changed storyline. he literally took the william we saw in og and added so much dimension like the softness with zoe, his voice when he is defending his views, his anger towards his brother chef’s kiss. chris veres is the close second here i mean even his comedic delivery is everything.
least favourite thomas. while trying to have him be this cold, popular guy i think he didn’t actually played well mostly just stood there with no expression. and that’s just no.
even:
favourite is henrik. really shows his power how no one was able to top him yet. i think in praising tarjei we forgot him but like i talked about all day THE LOCKER ROOM SCENE and how much he communicated with his eyes yup.
least favourite maxence. like i said he started bothering me on the rewatches and i realized they relied too much to his looks and natural charm of the actor. i might be biased here about rocco’s acting because i like nicco and marti and nicco so he is not my least fav.
yousef:
favourite is hassan who plays mohammed. maybe it’s because he had more heated arguments with amira about religion and their ‘breakup’ was more painful so i liked his portrayal much more. he just put something into the character like he defended his beliefs with as much fierce as amira.
least fave is lucas nabor who plays dani because spoiler! dani is yousef in skamesp. i will give him the benefit of the doubt maybe by the end of the season i could like his acting more and he does have good heart eyes but right now i don’t vibe with his acting much.
vilde:
favourite is lula. suffered through s6 for her acting’s sake (and for flavie’s) and she is just so good. the pain is in her eyes throughout s6, her breakup with basile was so heartbreaking. but also in earlier seasons she got daphne’s energetic and naive self so well.
least fave is nona who plays amber. idk i don’t vibe with amber and since wtfock cast put a lot into the characters even when writing is bad i think it’s more of her acting issue. it feels like there isn’t anything to her character and amber feels so one dimensional.
chris berg:
(not counting irene here) ah i would say fave is coline. i think she is the chris character that got the most material to play with (maybe why she is my fave) and she did the best out of it. but her scenes in s5 especially the one where she opens up is so nice i could read her emotions on her face.
least fave is nonexistent? i mean most of the time the chris character doesn’t get stuff to act with so like i cannot really judge the actors much when i haven’t seen much from them. and i just vibe with all chris versions.
mahdi:
fave is robin. s5 of skam fr might have gone downhill but robin had a really good performance that only got better throughout the season. especially the ending of the first ep where he looks over the street with his hearing faded away just the look in his eyes wow. honorable mention arda because his little improv lines with louis is amazing. he steals the backgroudn.
least fave again nonexistent because aside from robin and maybe francesco they didn’t get stuff to play with. i mean how can i judge dilan’s actor’s ability?
magnus:
fave is paul. his comedic timing is everything!! and most of that is improv so additional kudos. the way he stole a lot of background moments in s3!!! and s5 and s6 showed how well he could do drama too. when arthur tells him about his hearing the way his face crumbles - wow.
again no least fave because they don’t get material. like i may not like aaron as a character but i cannot say the actor does a bad job when he has to play one side of a character.
i think that about covers everyone!!! naturally i didn’t do anyone from druck or skam france new gen because this was just the versions.
i am so sorry that this is too long......but i cannot just name actors and not explain myself come on. and thanks anon for asking this i enjoyed typing out this a lot!
i also discovered something my fave version of the character doesn’t equal to my fav portrayal always. like nora isn’t my fav noora but she is my favourite portrayal. but jonas augustin and giovanni are my fav jonas characters interchangeably and anselm is my fav portrayal with ludovico following behind.
anyway let me know what you think about my answers!
Thd Haunting anthology for the ask game! :)
Thank you, my friend!! Sorry I took so long, lol.
Top 5 favourite characters:
This is hard.
1. Theo Crain
2. Dani  Clayton
3. Hannah Grose
4. Luke Crain
5. Viola Willoughby
Other characters you like:
It would be a lot easier to just name the characters I don’t like. These characters are so well-written and have so much depth. So if I don’t mention them in the next question, assume I like them.
Least favourite characters:
Peter fuckin’ Quint, Joey (Luke’s “friend” from rehab,) and Henry Wingrave.
Otps:
This show has more of my OTPs than any other. Hannah x Owen, Jamie x Dani, and Nell x Arthur.
Notps:
Luke x Joey, Perdita x  Arthur (Viola’s husband,) Becca x Peter
Favourite friendships:
Theo and Shirley, Luke and Steve, and Hannah and Jamie.
Favourite family:
The Crains own my heart, obviously, but what I loved best about BM over HH is that found family dynamic the main group develops.
Favourite episodes:
Touch, The Bent-Neck Lady, Two Storms (!!!!!!!!!! this episode oh my god,) Screaming Meemies, Silence Lay Steadily, The Way It Came, The Altar of the Dead, The Romance of Certain Old Clothes, and The Beast in the Jungle.
Favourite season/book/movie:
I always say this: THOHH is a masterpiece, and THOBM is a really, really exceptionally good show. I do prefer HH, but only by a tiny bit.
Favourite quotes:
“You have loved me, so I will always be here [in your heart.]” - Owen to Hannah. I’ve heard a thousand variations on this theme, but for some reason, the delivery and context of this line broke me. I always cry.
“You loved me completely. And I loved you the same. The rest is confetti.” - Nellie to her siblings. Rip me wide open!!
Best musical moment:
I really like the score of this show, but no one song or moment sticks out.
Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest:
Tumblr media
When it really disappointed you:
It never did. I think these two shows are some of the best television ever created.
Saddest moment:
Picking a top five (in no particular order,) since these are inherently sad and tragic shows...
1. Rebecca’s forced suicide at Peter’s hand.
2. Nellie’s death and realization that she is the Bent-Neck Lady.
3. Luke’s reaction to Nellie’s death - how he could literally feel it.
4. Jamie going to the lake and seeing Dani’s body and begging her to take her, too.
5. Dani having sleep paralysis and being unable to help Arthur when he has an aneurism.
Most well done character death:
I mean, they’re all really good and well-done. Appropriately heart-wrenching, shocking, and they all work in context of the plot. If I had to choose just one, it would probably be Nellie’s, since it’s the basis of the entire first season. The hints about the Bent-Neck Lady and the way we slowly get to know Nellie, and then come to love her the most right as she’s finally about to die - ugh, so good, so sad.
Favourite guest star:
Kate Siegel as Viola Willoughby.
Favourite cast member:
Victoria Pedretti is a goddamn delight. She’s an incredible actress - so raw and real and compelling. She’s a stoner IRL and seems super chill during interviews. I would love to share a joint with her someday. (If I ever share a joint with anyone ever again, thanks coronavirus.)
Character you wish was still alive:
Rebecca Jessel really deserved better, man. :( Fuck Peter Quint.
One thing you hope really happens:
Well, the series is officially on a semi-permanent hiatus. Mike Flannagan said he has no plans for future seasons in this universe. He is currently finishing up work on another horror show, Midnight Mass, so I’m looking forward to that. I would love to see more from this universe and this cast, though.
Most shocking twist:
The Bent-Neck Lady, for sure. So well foreshadowed, and still so shocking when the realization hits. My stomach dropped through the soles of my feet.
When did you start watching/reading?:
I caught this bandwagon pretty early - only a week or two after the first season premiered. I remember watching and realizing they had synced up the show’s timeline with real life - if you watched in 2018, Nellie dies that same year, and her date of death was just a week or two after the premiere. An extra little detail that made me very sad.
Best animal/creature:
There are no good animals in this show, lol. Fuck those kittens.
Favourite location:
Bly Manor is soooo pretty.
Trope you wish they would stop using:
I really hate anything with animals suffering in horror, so I just hope that never comes up again.
One thing this show/book/film does better than others:
Everything.
...
Okay, okay. The plotlines are very clever and super well-done.
Funniest moments:
Dani sleeping in the back of Owen’s car with her mouth wide open; Theo’s “I’m gonna get my fucking PHD;” like, most of what Theo said in general.
Couple you would like to see:
All I can say is that Hannah and Owen deserved Paris.
Actor/Actress you want to join the cast:
Meh. No opinion.
Favourite outfit:
I really loved the 80s and 90s looks in Bly. Dani’s jean jacket. Jamie’s looks when she and Dani are together later in life. All A+.
Favourite item:
Moonflowers.
Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?:
Nah.
What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?:
I gotta go with the found family at Bly. Jamie, Dani, Hannah, Owen, the kids. They clearly had a lot of fun together, and I’m a sucker for found family.
Most boring plotline:
I gotta go with Henry Wingrave’s doppelganger. It didn’t really do much for me, and I think the episode that centers on him, while showing important exposition, was one of the weakest in the anthology.
Most laughably bad moment:
I can’t think of one.
Best flashback/flashfoward if any:
The entirety of “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes”
Most layered character:
I would argue Olivia Crain. She starts out as a creative, kind, loving mother, and is slowly unraveled by the house - but that core of goodness is still inside her, and still motivates everything she does.
Most one dimensional character:
I think this show does a great job of making all of its characters complex and interesting. I wish we had learned more about Joey, but I think she’s meant to be unsympathetic on some level. But at the end of the day, she’s kind of just Luke’s addict almost-girlfriend, and a pretty weak character among much better ones.
Scariest moment:
Ooooh, that’s tough. I think for me, it’s when Steve sees Nellie’s ghost. It’s not a super spooky episode, up to that moment. But that close-up shot of Nellie’s graying, dead face, her eyes all fucked up, her mouth gaping open unnaturally wide - and the sound she makes. Woof. Ugh. Aaaaah. It’s a lot.
Grossest moment:
The kittens. Enough said.
Best looking male:
Tumblr media
Best looking female:
Tumblr media
Who you’re crushing on (if any):
I’ll always be a little in love with Kate Siegel.
Favourite cast moment:
I’ve never really looked for cast content.
Favourite transportation:
Theo’s Jeep.
Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise):
I just think Bly is so pretty. Most of the overhead or scenery shots of it are really nice.
Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you:
There aren’t any. Anyone who tells you otherwise misunderstood something.
Best promo:
I intentionally avoided promo to avoid spoilers.
At what point did you fall in love with this show/book:
The end of the very first episode of Hill House!
I’m not doing anymore of these ‘cause I’m bad at answering them!!
Author’s Note: I had a really sad idea for a short fic, so I wrote it so you all could be sad with me.  You can pry the headcanon that one of Malcolm’s top love languages is giving gifts from my cold, dead hands. Have some Christmas angst, everyone! (Read more is added for those on mobile… head to AO3 if it’s cut off for you. :D )
Word Count: 2,300-ish.
Summary: Three days after Malcolm has been taken, the team discovers he had bought them all Christmas presents. It doesn’t help them miss him any less. Link: AO3.
They each found them on their desks, tucked in with the rest of their respective pieces of mail. It was obvious Malcolm hadn’t wrapped them, himself; he had clearly paid someone to do a better (and much more festive) job than he ever would have. But that didn’t matter. Not really.
Edrisa found hers first. It was, naturally, an incredibly thoughtful gift, based on a little seed of information about her she had thrown out once that Bright had picked up and tucked away into his pocket for later like a small boy collecting shiny stones.
It was a puzzle. A 1000-piece beauty that was clearly hand drawn by an artist. The pictures on it looked like they were taken straight from an anatomy book, then set ablaze with tremendous color by a talented artist. She loved it with her whole heart, and she burst into tears as soon as she got through the wrapping paper and saw what it was.
Who knows how long it would have taken the rest of the team to find theirs, had Edrisa not mentioned it. As soon as she did, they immediately went to their respective desks to check their own mail. It had been three days since Bright’s disappearance on December 25th; whatever postage they had been missing out on in that time frame was literally the last thing on their minds. Until now.
JT’s was the smallest, as far as size went; a maroon envelope sealed shut with gold-colored wax. It stood out like a sore thumb in his mail box amidst the standard white envelopes that had been accumulating. “Damn,” he’d said to himself, running the pad of his thumb over the dried wax of the seal, “Even this dude’s envelopes are rich.” He had quieted, though, once he’d opened up the card and started reading what Malcolm had written inside with his neat, all-capitalized handwriting.
 JT, Sorry for crashing your date. The next one’s on me.
 Merry Christmas!
 MB
 P.S. Justin? Jerico? Jeremiah?
JT had to laugh, despite everything. Attached to the card was a $100 gift card to Amsterdam Billiards. He stared at it, unblinking, for several seconds before his eyes started to water from being open too long (mostly).
“Damn it, Bright,” he muttered to himself as he closed the card. “Where you at, bro?”
There was a small black postage box waiting for Gil on his desk, hiding under a manila envelope. It was not the sort of small black box one would buy a woman; Gil knew was it was the moment he pulled it out from his mail pile and saw the company name stamped on the side in raised silver lettering. He stared at it for a moment, until it blurred together in his vision beneath a sheen of tears.
His fingers traced over the letters on the front of the box, and for a moment he allowed himself to just feel how smooth the cardboard was on the delivery box the gift had come in. He had to clench his jaw against the lump steadily climbing up his throat. Before he even made a move to open the box, he pulled back his right cuff, exposing the watch he wore on his wrist. Despite how worn and well loved it was, the watch was in excellent condition for being nearly fifteen years old. Especially considering that Gil literally wore it every day, to the point that he felt naked without it. It had held up marvelously over the years, which wasn’t surprising, as it had likely been expensive. Just as expensive as the new one he was holding in his other hand.
Without warning, the memory came back, unbidden. He could recall it like it had taken place last week. Malcolm, no older than twelve, handing him a dark blue velvet box with a hand that shook so fiercely, Gil immediately moved to take it from the poor kid before he dropped it.
It hadn’t been Father’s Day, then. The Whitlys didn’t celebrate Father’s Day anymore. But it had been damn close to it, and Malcolm had thought to buy a gift for Gil. As a man with no biological children of his own, Gil had cherished this more than he ever could have put into words. He still wore the same watch to this day.
And Malcolm noticed. Obviously. Because Malcolm Bright noticed everything.
“You still have that watch I gave you,” he had said, exactly 1.5 days into the investigation of the “copycat” Surgeon case, as he stared at Gil’s wrist.
“Of course I do,” Gil retorted. He was standing close enough to Bright at the time to reach out and give his shoulder a slight squeeze. “I wear it every day.”
Malcolm had all but beamed at that. “Looks a little worn, though,” he added, as his gaze drifted back down to the silver time piece on Gil’s wrist.
Gil had shrugged. “It’s well-loved,” he said simply. Malcolm had frowned just slightly at that, clearly deep in thought.
And now he knew what Bright had been thinking about: a wardrobe update for Gil Arroyo.
Gil sucked in a breath, holding the air in his chest for a few seconds to help expel some of the fear that had taken up residence there. He wasn’t afraid a new watch, obviously; unfortunately, he knew exactly what he was afraid of, and it was too terrible for words.
He was afraid he was holding the last piece of Malcolm Bright he was ever going to see.
(They all were afraid of that, deep down.)
The atrocity of that thought propelled him into action, and he started ripping open the little box’s packaging tape. Inside was a hard, velvet case, just like the one a much younger Malcolm had first presented to Gil all those years ago. The watch inside was magnificent. It was all black, even its face, and incredibly sleek. Clearly this time, Malcolm was going for an updated, modern look for him. Gil loved it. There was a small, folded card inside, and Gil pried it open with hands that had gone numb. He recognized Malcolm’s handwriting instantly. It was simple, sweet, and to the point.
 Merry Christmas, Gil!    Thank you–for everything.
 Love,
 Bright
Seeing the words in Malcolm’s handwriting was what finally put him over the edge. It had been three long days of fruitless searching for their profiler; they were all exhausted, and none more so than Gil. He reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose, not even bothering to keep the tears at bay anymore.
“Thanks, bud,” he whispered to an empty room when he could finally find his voice again. “I love it.”
By the time Dani found out Bright had all gotten them Christmas gifts and had them sent to the station, she was exhausted. Just at the end of her rope mentally, physically, and emotionally. When Edrisa came up to her in tears, shaking a box in her face, Dani nearly lost it on her. Until he heard what she was saying.
“He got us gifts,” Edrisa squeaked out.
Dani felt the blood rush out of her face. She had a good idea who the ‘he’ in question was, but still had to ask, “Who…?”
“Bright!” Edrisa said. “Bright got us all Christmas presents. Incredibly thoughtful, probably expensive presents.” Her lower lip wobbled, and she looked like she was going to start crying again. “I didn’t get him anything. I thought about it! But then we just got so busy with the case load and… and…” She trailed off.
“And then Bright went missing on Christmas,” Dani finished for her, deadpanning. Edrisa nodded, sniffing once. Dani looked down at the box in Edrisa’s hands, studying it. “He got you a puzzle?”
Edrisa nodded vigorously again and offered up the box to Dani, who took it gingerly, like it was something to be cherished.
“It’s gorgeous,” Dani said genuinely.
“I know,” Edrisa agreed, “I’m scared to even open it. Like I’m going to ruin it somehow just by touching it. But I thought I could get started on it tonight… Maybe have it done by the time you find him, you know?”
Dani’s heart surged at the words by the time you find him, and she ground her teeth together at the familiar tightness in her jaw that meant she was definitely close to crying. Edrisa didn’t seem to notice; she was staring at her puzzle box. Dani placed it back in her arms gently, and Edrisa hugged it to her chest. The pieces inside all fell to the bottom of the box with a soft swish.
“We’ll find him,” Dani said simply. We have to.
Edrisa gave her a watery smile and nodded. “Hopefully before I even have the chance to finish this beast.”
Dani returned her smile. “So,” she started, eager to turn the subject away from the fact that Bright was still missing. “You said he mailed it?”
“Oh, right. Yes,” Edrisa said, “Apparently he mailed them all to the station. Which is kind of silly, but he must have just paid to have everything wrapped, and then he probably didn’t know our addresses, so… They were just here, waiting for us. Since Christmas.”
Dani swallowed. Part of her almost wished Bright had forgotten about hers, that he had sent something to everyone else but her. But the thought was a wasted one; Bright would never forget about her.
Dani’s gift was a fairly large box, about the size of two shoeboxes lined up side by side. There was no way she could have avoided seeing it, once she got back to her desk. (Had it really been that long since she’d been back at her desk, away from the search for him?)
She stared at it for a few moments, willing herself to keep calm, before she took out her pocket knife to cut through the box’s tape. Dani didn’t really do Christmas presents; with her immediate family, sure, but she couldn’t remember the last time she had either given or received a gift from a friend. Even the team–Gil, JT, and Edrisa–usually only went out for a drink, rotating who would pay the tab, for holidays or birthdays. Gifts were not her forte. This was foreign territory, and it left her on edge.
She could almost feel Bright watching her, those brilliant eyes of his staring at her hopefully, like he so wanted her to love whatever it was he had picked out for her.
Inside the package, after she removed a fair amount of bubble wrap and colored tissue paper, was a large wooden box. The moment she read the scripted letters burned into the top of the it, she knew exactly what she’d find inside, and she huffed out a shaky breath. As soon as she opened it, she knew she was right; the smell wafted up from the contents of the box, despite the fact that they were vacuum sealed, and it hit her like a punch in the gut.
 I love Earl Grey.
She could hear his soft laugh, his words back to her. “I know. It’s the aroma, isn’t it?”
She was staring down at a beautiful box of British-imported loose leaf Earl Grey tea. Included was a small metal tea strainer, and little wrapped bags of spices and citrus peels, all individually wrapped and sectioned off into their own little spots in the box lined with velvet. In the center was a burgundy tin, and Dani smiled as soon as she read what it housed.
For someone whose tea-drinking habits involved microwaving water and using whatever brand of bagged tea was cheapest, the custom-built box before her was intimidating.  And somehow, Bright knew it would be. (Because of course he did.) Inside the tin in the middle were fifty already-assembled tea bags of Earl Grey from the same gourmet ingredients, ready to be slipped into hot water without hassle and enjoyed immediately.
 With friends.
It was one of the very best gifts she had ever been given in her life. And she felt a renewed hatred for Paul Lazar that Malcolm wasn’t there to share it with her. She reached down and pulled the tin out from the box. It popped open easily, and she was overtaken by that delightful smell again. She breathed it in for a few moments, until her nose grew used to it and the smell wasn’t nearly as potent to her.
Eventually, she removed the entire wooden box from its packaging, and that’s when she found the card. It was a simple folded card, red on the outside, blank on the inside, save for Malcolm’s writing. It was simple enough–just wishing her a merry Christmas and a happy new year, but the way he had signed it made the breath halt in her chest.
 Your friend,
 Malcolm Bright
“God, Bright,” she murmured, grinding her teeth again as she willed herself not to cry. But it was a fight she soon gave in to. What was the use? They had been searching for him for days, pouring everything they had into finding some kind of lead on where he had been taken, all to have nothing turn up. And then he’d gone and gotten her a damn thoughtful gift for a holiday he had been kidnapped on. It was all too much.
So Dani let herself cry for a few minutes. When it was over, she felt better and worse at the same time. She closed the lid of the wooden tea box and tucked it into the biggest drawer of her desk. The little card from Bright she taped, open, on the side of her computer monitor; she would see it each and every time she sat down at her desk.
And she vowed she wasn’t going to be drinking any tea at all until she found him, until he could sit and have a cup with her, himself.
Terminator
I watched the first terminator
It was an....EXPERIENCE
I now understand all the callbacks in dark fate. the skulls. the real janky looking skeletal terminators of john's future. hiding the gun in a jacket. scars. dani ironically not being able to drive. ending the story in a factory. the whole *gestures* grace/dani thing. the feminism
first things first - the soundmixing was SO BAD. the sound effects were shit anyway lol but I had to constantly turn the volume up and down respectively for conversation and gun sounds. also the epilepsy seizure white flashes were hell
i unironically AND ironically loved the pre-film credits with its Cool synth music
I loved the Cool synth keyboard sountrack it was INCREDIBLE hahahahaaha
i was not prepared for the enormous amount of manbod on display at the start of this film. like damn. DAMN. and it was pretty tasteful. and they definitely established Kyle as uhhhhh a very viable romantic interest - sprinting through that walmart shirtless, putting on cool product placement nikes, and somehow recovering his very cool coat in the police station while it was under fucking siege. was also not expecting to lay eye on an actual terminator dick in the shadows. but i think we should have more of that in films tbh
I just gotta say - I LOVED the style. I'm going to assume that is really what it was like. I love Sarah's little scooter especially, and her high waisted jeans and lil booties. her hair is of course....INCREDIBLE. the front so short that it poofs up lololol. She really does look in her twenties... I also loved all the little character details EVERYWHERE. the cops in the station??? I think my favourite character was definitely the police captain -  idk, such rich characterisation for a side character - with such random comedic delivery.
I also liked how meta it got through the psychologist's interrogation of Kyle - the film really just said: let's forestall your complaints about how none of this makes sense and give you excuses through Kyle's super intense explanations (well-acted) lol
but all of the cops literally seeing all their buddies go down and then jumping out to get hella shot themselves with no sense of self-preservation was pretty hilariously stupid - some video game logic shit
I actually really loved the flashbacks to the future - that actually looked a lot more realistic than i thought. not the green screen stuff while they run through the wasteland but yknow - the humans living in underground tunnels. especially the concept of everybody living next to each other along the walls of a tunnel was really worked
Also - pugsley??? AMAZING. (every time it opened its mouth the bf would go ''aaaaa')
I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE EYE GORE. the wax (?) puppet was hilarious AND creative
The sexual politics  (literally) were really interesting?? Matt and Ginger and Sarah being so comfortable with each other that Matt's weird sex call makes her laugh. Ginger just listening to a bop while having sex with Matt? lol. The......sex scene between Kyle and Sarah was.......uhhhh...........unique? blessedly short? nice handholding there. I'm not saying it was bad, and I approve of the politics of Sarah getting on top but like, the repeated almost-the-same shots made it look a bit weird.
I have to note though that their kissing was incredibly SHIT. in my opinion
The point beforehand when Sarah goes: what about the women in your time? what are they like?
and Kyle goes: good fighters
i was like - Cameron - you feminist sunovabitch!! which naturally i'd already had this reaction when I saw that Kyle was running around with a female soldier (who looked eerily like Grace??? actually) and also arrived at his comfy tunnel home with another female soldier in tow. 1984 people!!! and Rogue One couldn't be fuckin bothered.
and then Sarah is like: yknow what i mean - you got a girlfriend????
and we find out that Kyle has had Sarah's image as his singular haven of comfort and beauty his whole life (which means also that he’s a virgin)
and it's kinda romantic
but THEN
he regrets admitting it!!!! 'i shouldn't have said that'
AND THAT KICKS IT UP TO REAL ROMANCE. THE GOOD SHIT!!!! YES!!!!
(then the kissing starts which is bad)
but how the fuck can fans of this original movie complain about dark fate loL???? Sarah really IS like Dani, adored for both her legendary power and what she personally represents to her saviour: a haven from their terrible lives. girls thrown into life-threatening situations and learning to aid their protector step by step - until she's the last one standing - until she's picked up the skills and grit and trauma to drag Kyle/Grace around to save them and then go toe to toe with a fucking Terminator after losing them.
Sometimes I think it's cos dudes can't deal with a movie in which there's no one to latch onto that looks like them. Also it might just be the racism - cos youtube comments generally seem to approve of blonde-haired blue-eyed badass Grace
The pacing of this movie was actually really good even though there were TWO huge exposition dumps in quick succession in two random cars. They were fine. The car chase scene that came after was the only boring part in the movie.
My god the stop motion shots of the terminator though - OH MY GOD. that aged SO BADLY
I like how they gave the Terminator steel teeth bc otherwise it wouldn't have looked enough like a skull. I also liked how it literally had pizza feet hahahahaha
I was disappointed with John's words to Sarah though - it was both the delivery (worst line Kyle's actor did - like how fuckin dead was his voice there) and the words themselves. If i had a way to speak to my mother who saved me and raised me to win the war against the machines and i'd already lost her I would have been like: I LOVE YOU - I can't help you and I’m sorry because you saved me, thank you for everything.
Anyway - in the end i was surprised the terminator could be exploded with a single lil nitroglycerin bomb or whatever but the choice to have Kyle bite it for that heroic act was intense and sad
While Sarah and unlegged Terminator were crawling along I was like: how the fuck is this robot getting any traction on this metal surface with it's smooth little metal fingers??
Sarah's last soft 'kyle' as she watches him get zipped up into a body bag was the most touching line in the movie
The ending narration was pretty fuckin shit though.
So yeah. I enjoyed that
