A favorite Benny Gecko headcanon of mine is that before House “civilized” the Chairmen/Boot Riders his name was literally just Gecko.

The name Benny is a double reference to both the most powerful trump card in the card game Euchre, and to Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, the real life mobster who owned the Flamingo Hotel and Casino and who drove a lot of the development of the Las Vegas Strip in the 1940s. Benny’s entire brand is pretty clearly influenced by Bugsy Siegel, both out of universe by the devs as well as in universe by House and possibly Benny himself, especially considering the buffalo plaid suit. (Bugsy Siegel almost definitely also existed in the Fallout universe and played a similar role as he did irl because the Fallout timeline branches off from ours in 1945, only two years before he was assassinated).

It’d be one hell of a coincidence if that was the name he had as a tribal, and since we know that House’s reinvention of the strip families was specifically in the image of the old world, it only makes sense that that would include names. Swank probably wasn’t called Swank before the Boot Riders became the Chairmen either (I mean, his name is literally Swank).

Gecko doesn’t seem like a particularly unusual name for a tribal to have. It’s the name of a fairly common hostile creature in the Mojave Wasteland that the Boot Riders probably encountered regularly. Geckos were likely at least associated with combat or ferocity in their culture, which given Benny’s description of them when you talk to him at the fort were probably traits that the Boot Riders valued. Thus it isn’t that hard to believe that a Boot Rider would name their kid Gecko. Alternatively he may have earned the name after some kind of encounter involving one or more Geckos, if earning names was a thing in their culture a la the Khans.

We can assume that the usage of Gecko as a sort of surname for Benny could’ve been started by other members of the Chairmen while they were still getting used to the name transition. Like, imagine every single person you know suddenly has a completely different name. Informally tagging a person’s Boot Rider name onto the end of their Chairman name could’ve been a way to prevent confusion in the early days of them being Chairmen. (The implication of this subheadcanon being that every Chairman has a “surname” like this, which I personally think is really cool). People outside of the Chairmen probably just assumed those were their full names, so now they basically are, at least in the public consciousness of the city.

Another possible contributing factor to it’s usage as a surname is the general usage of surnames by other groups the Chairmen interact or associate with, especially the NCR. If House didn’t give the Chairmen last names, or if last names just weren’t a thing for the Boot Riders, it doesn’t seem unreasonable for them to just put their Boot Rider name as their last name when signing paperwork or whatever, or whenever else other people expect them to have one, especially if my subheadcanon from the last paragraph is true and they were already kind of using them that way anyway. Also I like to think there were at least a few Chairmen who, when asked what their last name was, assumed the asker meant the last name that they had.

What do you think the Bootriders were especially good at? Probably exploring considering their name, but it’s fun to think about what Swank and Tommy were good at pre-House :)

Scouting!!! Very similar to exploring but with slight differences.

The Boot-Riders to me weren’t really about getting a lay of the land and more so gathering things they needed for the rather large tribe. We know they are one of the bigger tribes and the idea that they’d be thoroughly searching and picking through ruins leads to a lot of issues with headcount and not having someone watching their backs.

I like to think the Boot-Riders were nomadic in the sense they followed caravans, gecko packs and watched out for scavenging grounds more than actively looked for a fight. They were great at combat but I’d say they were very defensive in their fighting style rather than offensive. I don’t really have a reason for this other than Tommy and Swank having lower endurance compared to Benny. Though I also believe they were very melee based in their fighting style seeing as Benny’s tagged skills are melee and unarmed implying it was a big aspect of their culture. He also mentions that they decided who led next through challenged knife fights so….

Tommy and Swank tagged skills are in guns energy weapons and only melee but that also makes sense if they stayed farther away from fighting in favor of watches. It’s insignificant really but I like to think that Boot-Riders would pair scouts out to go look for viable areas before they chose a direction and a strong Boot-Rider would accompany those patrols for just in case there was a bigger threat.

Tommy and Swank notably are higher in agility thank Benny, only by one really but I think it’s like the perfect example for my idea of the patrols. Benny is the “support” being stronger, more durable but less agile than Swank and Tommy who would have theoretically been searching and scouting a potential picking/hunting ground.

Interestingly Tommy is like really good with energy weapons more so than Swank and I like to think he was really good at clearing out areas for the Boot-Riders to pick over. Kinda like laser quick draw. I think on a more social level he knew a lot of Boot-Rider history and was kinda well, a historian. I don’t think Boot-Riders particularly valued music but he would def embellish their roots through campfire songs like the Singer from All Roads. Of course, once they became the Chairmen that stopped but he still remembers those old songs.

Swank is harder for me cause, well, House wasn’t wrong when he said Swank was “unimaginative”. He’s like the Boot-Rider equivalent to an accountant. I can imagine he’s so good at managing the casino floor because he was used to keeping track of supplies, missing Riders and other such organizational things for the Boot-Riders. It wasn’t just his job but he was probably pretty good at it amongst the members who had the responsibility. It’s being but Swank seems like a mundane dude outside of the rat pack, tribal wasteland stuff. Like he drinks a plain black coffee to me and likes it.

From a Knife Fight to a Machete Duel

Benny’s a character who’s done a lot of bad things. Including enforcing a dismissive attitude to his and the rest of the Chairman’s past as the Mojave Boot Riders (though he himself says “We were nomadic badasses, not to be trifled with. A gang of ruffians, though with a certain panache.”, so there’s always some personal respect for his past). 

He started the changing of his culture (one may even say ‘destruction’ of it... the ‘one’ is me) by winning the leader position in a knife fight with Bingo. He’s very happy if you chose to fight him in a duel, he says “Machetes at twenty paces, hey? I accept your challenge.“ and when you commit “You're a class act, baby. Not to say I'm gonna make it easy for you...“

Maybe he saw the parrelels, his start was a knife fight, he ends in a machete duel. To lose the potential title of ‘ruler of Vegas’ in a machete duel. Benny clearly didn’t think much of his history when the oppertunity for power was there, but in that moment... he was a Boot Rider again, best person wins. Best person deserves Vegas.

I know we all love Benny as a cringefail loser but does anyone else kinda wish his ingame counterpart was more like his All Roads counterpart? Like the way everyone describes him before you actually meet him is more on par with his All Roads counterpart like yeah he ambushes you in your suite and leaves after you sleep with him and was intended to come back and try to kill you after you free him from The Legion but he's honestly a cringefail loser about it all and every NPC describes him as if he was the spawn of Satan when he's actually so pathetic you can't even consider him a threat when in All Roads he was a slimey sneaky evil bastard like there's times where I forget ingame Benny and All Roads Benny are the same character given how widely different they are from each other

You wanna talk about House and Benny? Let’s talk about House and Benny. Let’s talk about how House says he saw Benny as a son figure ans a rightful successor to the strip. Let’s talk about how Benny was so charmed by House’s offer that he literally killed a man to get the position to agree to it. Let’s talk about how House was intentionally priming Benny and regrets not doing better, not for the wasted time but of Benny’s wasted potential, how it was misplaced. Let’s talk about how Benny didn’t question House’s leadership until the guy started going radio silent. Let’s talk about House and Benny:

#cause realistically Benny had to be of an age house could project a parental view on when they first met and combined with how impulsive and #short sighted Benny is with his planning and way of operating makes me think he’s not as old as people headcanon cause he was the leader #the chairmen for 7 years so you have to subtract that from his current age meaning he was even younger and more impressionable to house cuz #how else would house see him as a good candidate if his backstabbing was already a thing seeing as house was aware of his plan from the #start so since house projects and acts like a man ranged late 40s to 50s I’d say Benny is max 25-27 by game start so they met when he was #still a teen cause a theme in the game surrounding older npcs ins a resistance to change and of course someone still young and okay with #change would take an offer such as Houses eagerly along with the fact Benny seems like okay with sudden change actually considering him #giving you the reigns when he thinks his goose is cooked #but this is all to say there was def an unhealthy projection on house part on the role he wanted Benny to play that was likely controlling #and the sudden silence as he tried to acquire the chip would only make Benny more inclined to rebel especially since he is still young and #impressionable if we take he’s only in his mid 20s #and before someone says he doesn’t look it he acts like that and some characters are supposed to be 26 and 37 and I bet you guessed wrong on #who the first time #fallout #fallout new vegas #mr house fnv #robert edwin house #benny fnv #benny gecko

it’s especially hot out one day so he ditches the blazer. comes down from his suite in a short sleeved button up but oh look it has black and white checkers.
