I just finished Re-reading The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir and omg it’s just amazing the second time around. Technically, this would be my first time reading it completely. The first time I read it, I got distracted at around the 90% mark and didn’t finish.

But omg I love this web novel so much. The characters are so flawed and complex and human! Trash Man aka Ning Yuxuan probably had the best character arc out of all the characters. I loved hating him in the beginning when he truly was a trash man. And then I gleefully laughed when Ji Man threw him for a loop and didn’t make life easy for him. Then I relished in his suffering as he had to grovel and work his ass off to try to win Ji Man’s heart only to fail. After that, I felt bad for him as he desperately tried to get Ji Man to open up her heart a bit. Then that turned to rooting for him to get the girl and also wanting to shake some sense into Ji Man. And finally, I swooned and awwed seeing the lengths he went to to protect Ji Man and give her a peaceful life. If you’re going to get swept up in a fight for the throne and dangerous political intrigue, Trash Man is definitely the person you want to be with!

The level of scheming and many layers of planning this man did was truly frightening albeit highly effective.

This line especially stuck out to me:

““Right now, was this considered a meeting of villains that were colluding together?”

Because viewed from a different perspective, Trash Man and Ji Man could definitely be the antagonists in another story bahahaha. I loved that Trash Man had once considered taking the throne for himself but only turned down the idea because of some weird clan rule that said his clan’s descendants could never ascend to the throne. He certainly could have usurped the throne several times easily.

And Ji Man! What a great main character. Just like Trash Man, she is frighteningly competent and not someone you want to mess with. I like that she doesn’t go after people unless they harmed her first. Oh boy does she hold a grudge and will do anything to get her revenge. What’s great about her is that she’s not omnipotent and gets into trouble/makes mistakes/misreads situations. She has a bit of an advantage since she knows some of the story’s plot and has her knowledge from modern times, but that isn’t always enough to keep her safe or out of trouble. That’s so refreshing to see in a transmigrator story!

And the side characters! I don’t know how this author did it but they got me to care about the side characters. I even teared up while reading the death scene of the second prince and his wife Pengyue. This author really has a way with words because I could totally imagine how the second prince looked and sounded as he dragged his body over to his wife’s bed, not realizing that she’s already dead. And the whole time he’s “berating” her for seemingly betraying him, he’s also making excuses for her and already talking about how she’ll have to make it to him. We didn’t get too many details about their relationship, but the author easily conveyed how much he loved Pengyue in just that one scene. I would totally read a story or watch a drama just about those two.

I was invested throughout the entire novel even though it’s super long at over 500 chapters. It’s THAT good. That’s why it pains me to think about that abomination of an adaptation. I haven’t seen it, but just by the trailers alone, I could tell it would not do the story justice. There are too many plot lines in this story that would not pass censorship. I mean, Ning Yuxuan was responsible for raising up and then dethroning three different emperors one after the other. No way would the censors have allowed that. But even if we were to put that aside, there’s just too much stuff to fit into 38 episodes.

Anyway, read it, loved it, would absolutely recommend it you’re into transmigrator stories. Now I’m off to read the bonus chapters.

If there ever was my personal bete noire in drama form, the horrifying abomination that is Romance of Twin Flower is it.

Even taken in isolation, the shrill, dumb, fake-cutesy trailer would set my teeth on edge. But this barftastic travesty is supposed to be an adaptation (!!!!) of Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, in my not so humble opinion the best non-danmei web novel I’ve ever read - cynical, smart, dark and complicated tale about two ruthless smart individuals where romance of ANY kind doesn’t even kick off until the last third of the novel.

This is a rare novel where the hero is a believable period aristo politician, i.e., a monster who deliberately kills an unborn child, sacrifices one concubine to protect another, views his wives as chattel (but coldly uses himself as a chattel too), deposes princes as convenient etc etc and you don’t like him but you get what makes him tick, you get that it’s that or his whole clan going down. His arc was one of the best ones I’ve read because I hated him as I started (nicknamed him Trash Man in fact) and the wonder of it is that he is not a better kinder person at the end, but he’s opened his heart to the FL and you also get what makes him tick and you see his slow growth into considering one other person and it’s delightful. And the FL! The FL is amazing. Fully adult, cold as fuck, competent, self-sufficient and emotionally aloof (it takes her almost until the end of the novel to love ML.) These are two smart, ruthless forces of nature colliding.

And in that trailer, they are giggly brain-dead morons, with a girlish giggle (her) and cutesy face wrinkle (him.)

Honestly, Peng Xiao Ran is poison in terms of dramas - the sole good one she was in was GMP and everything since has been a horror. This is the last straw and after this I will avoid anything she is in, because you know it will be a trainwreck. I’ve only seen Ding Yuxi in Tiger/Rose where I like him, but not only is he utterly wrong for this role, the way it’s written nobody could save this. I might give him another chance in another drama, but he’s on thin ice.

THE EXISTENCE OF THIS DRAMA GIVES ME FUCKING ULCERS.

This drama is my villain origin story.

Fourteenth year of chenghua is still EXTREMELY good, and it's good to know that wang zhi is literally their sitcom boyfriend and breaks into their homes and eats their food, but it's kind of fascinating to me that like.... I'm not sure I've read a single book with imperial succession as an climactic plot point where the pacing DIDN'T totally lose me at the end.

(Thousand Autumns might be closest, but 1) that wasn't the climax, and 2) i did still Slump after it happened and had to consciously muster my strength)

Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish, Qi-Ye, it's pretty consistent! Did Golden Stage do an actual succession or just apply that pressure to the emperor? Either way, my attention was clearly slipping. Married Thrice To Salted Fish! I knew that was the plot direction and was excited for it, and it still struggled to hold me. This isn't over, and I don't even know if the plot WILL fully go there, but just as things were soaring-- two year time skip. Yeah, that's more bureaucratically realistic, and there's ALSO a real emperor who stopped ruling at whatever date, but mannnnnnnnnn.

I like the majority of the book a LOT, and I literally just said the thing about admiring meng xi shi weighting stories heavier towards plots, but i could really use a bit more indulgence here 🥲 I do highkey wonder if this show/book comparison will be like the untamed or woh where no, i love the book, maybe better than the show, but the body language and microexpressions are too powerful, they cannot be denied

Oh my God, what is this abomination? How are these my Trash Man and Ji Man?!?!?

How dare they take the single best het web novel I have ever read and turn it into this cheap, candy tinted mess?!?!?

Also, what utter miscasting! I am very fond of Ding Yuxi (loved him in Tiger and Rose, excited to watch him in Seven Lifetimes) but he’s utterly miscast as ice-cold, pragmatic’ Machiavellian aristocrat who gets rid of three emperors and has his own child aborted and concubines killed for terrifying realpolitik reasons. And I suppose Peng Xiaoran is somewhat better but she still has the wrong vibe as even colder than Trash Man, terrifyingly smart, completely detached Ji Man. That novel is so good in its very very slow burn rapprochement of two terrifying sharks - and the joy of watching a master manipulator, a genuine period man with those attitudes towards women, gradually fall for Ji Man’s competence, her ruthlessness, her calmness and her utter indifference to him, and risk everything for her as she remains uncaring for the longest time is unreal. But this pastel sugary nonsense that takes out all the darkness, the complexity and everything that made it good - ugh.

Btw, if I were casting, I’d cast Chen Kun, beautiful and icy and still, as Trash Man and Zhang Ziyi as Ji Man.

My Villain Husband: Episode 1

This scene is extremely necessary for character development.

Can I just say how much I enjoy the way web dramas objectify the male body like this? Is it wrong? I don't know, but feel free to have that discourse with the wind, baby. In this house we have all the time in the world to watch a fit young specimen ladle water over his shoulders. This episode is 6min 35sec long and we spend 1min 03sec of it watching this guy pour dirty bathwater on himself- it’s a little thing called world-building, people.

The Lady in Butcher’s House: Episode 15

This drama was awful, and yet I watched the whole thing. Why? Because of the rare moments of redemption like this scene in episode 15 when Wang Ruo Lin (best known as world’s worst shifu Zhao Jing in Word of Honor), Tong Meng Shi (who is a good actor and doesn’t belong in this mess) and Ren Yu break character several times. You can absolutely tell they were cracking each other up, and because this show is so low budget, they just left it in.

Stop laughing, Xu Qing Jia; the prince is only trying to help!

The prince has the general kiss his collar and then quizzes the male lead on how to hide the evidence from his wife.

This drama also did one of my favorite things which is advocate for something totally unrelated to the story in a repeated and intrusive fashion. For this particular drama it was moxibustion and brushing your teeth.

Legend of Fei: Episode 45

Ah, as expected, the favorite game of a man with a giant metal hand that looks like a foam rubber Hulk arm that was painted silver.

Sometimes When We Touch: Episode 1

White Impermanence Ghost is rocking a breezy high fashion look in this modern Taiwanese drama about life, death, and outsourcing the afterlife to the local university’s Supernatural Society.

Hikaru No Go: American Style

My version is set in Cleveland and the ghost is a WWII vet who became a union steel mill worker after the war, the kid is a grad student at Case Western and the name of the game is euchre! However, not sure if anyone who isn’t Great Lakes adjacent will find this interesting.

Mirror: A Tale of Two Cities: Episode 1

Maybe my understanding of fantasy creatures is lacking, but I always thought that merpeople lived in the water or as paintings on the bedroom walls of 7-year-olds. In this drama, for reasons unknown, they seem to live on desolate and snowy mountain plains. Even Novoland Pearl Eclipse managed to get the merpeople in the water.

Love and Redemption: Episode 6

“Sandra, call my girl and see if she can fit me in- I broke a nail!”
