Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Season 1, 2023-24, Japan)
Director: Keiichirō Saitō
Writer: Tomohiro Suzuki (based on the manga by Kanehito Yamada & Tsukasa Abe)
Mini-review:
I can perfectly understand why this show has been so huge. To put it simply, it's a truly delightful experience. It gives off this sense of warmth and gentleness that made me feel so relaxed and at ease. Also, the show itself is pretty much flawless: impeccable pacing, great character writing, rich worldbuilding, strong action scenes, a brilliant sense of humor... There's just nothing to criticize. And Madhouse has proved once again how amazing their animation is when they're given the appropiate time and resources. I feel like they've had a rough time in the last few years, so I hope their beautiful work for this anime serves as some sort of revival for them. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is easily one of the best animes I've watched in recent times, and I'll be waiting for its next season with bated breath.

Still enjoying and continuing this manga, even if I keep wanting it to do things differently in a lot of places. We're in the middle of another demon arc, where we get to see demons do a lot of thinking and acting, and we're also still being told that they're ontologically evil in a way that's hard to reconcile. Also there's a lot of talk about spells and how to counter them, and I wish I knew what 'analyzing' meant here other than an RPG countdown - what's Frieren actually thinking about that lets her learn something about a spell? Anyway, I'm going to keep reading it, even if I am kind of grumpy about particulars.
