The coin depicts the coat of arms of Sixtus: the shield displays his family symbol of an oak tree. The papal cross keys and crown are above. The back depicts Saint Lawrence.
Pope Sixtus IV was of the della Rovere family, uncle of the future Pope Julius II. He had the Sistine Chapel constructed, founded the Vatican Library, and improved the city of Rome including restoring aqueducts , bridges, and improving the streets.
Sixtus was however infamous for nepotism (6 nephews were made cardinals), and for selling political positions and favours. He was at war with Florence and the Medici for two years. He was also accused of having male lovers, and of fathering children.
