soooo interesting to me that a lot of what marvin sings to/about whizzer in act 2 are questions (this isnt even all of them) i think it shows how much he changed since act 1

I was just watching Falsettos for the billionth time and while sobbing during “What Would I Do?” I started imagining Rutledge and Hall singing it. Like Rutledge is Marvin and Hall is Whizzer.

What Would I Do

its one of the best musical songs i have ever heard and this version never fails to make me cry.

in 1981, the protagonist has lost his lover to aids and after struggling with internalized homophobia all his life and once he has been able to grow and understand himself and love and be happy his lover falls sick and its terrible to go through.

this is the duo they sing right after the lover dies, and it's heartbreaking and moves me to tears every single time, knowing everything they have gone through to be where they were just to face such a tragedy, how he used to regret everything he did related to love and now just begs to keep going and do it all again.

It’s so beautiful.

It brings a sense of hope and love to a horrible, hopeless ending. Marvin and Whizzer meeting, express their love and proclaim that they feel no regret even after all they’ve been through. All the shit they went through was worth it for the short time they spent together.

And the harmonies are amazing. Beautiful, fantastic tear-jerking, what more can I say?

A heartwrenching love song, sung between a gay man, Marvin, and his lover who has just died of AIDS. To add to the sadness of that, the lyrics subtly suggest that Marvin has AIDS too. The harmonies are beautiful and it’s one of very few musical theatre songs to move me to tears.
