i’m curious what your opinion is on the finer points of the case mentioned in the JSTOR post you reblogged earlier. the two sources in the post say that JSTOR didn’t press charges against him and had already settled with him by the time he killed himself. from what i read on wikipedia, the concern seems to be that JSTOR complied with a subpoena, which i don’t believe they have a choice to ignore? if anything it seems like the us government had reason to want him dead for wikileaks and public court records reasons, so they took a terms of use violation and blew it up into a dozen federal crimes.

is there more context i should be aware of? i have no particular affection or malice for JSTOR but the sources i found don’t exactly implicate the database or its employees in murder.

That's from page 175 of this document. This line: "The activity noted is outright theft and may merit a call with university counsel, and even the local police, to ensure not only that the activity has stopped but that - e.g. the visiting scholar who left - isn't leaving with a hard drive containing our database" is where I think the culpability starts.

If someone is downloading 1000s of articles (what seems like reasonable threshold for us to take action), what's wrong with us - or the university in collaboration with us - alerting the cyber-crimes division of law enforcement and initiating an investigation, having cop search dorm room and try to retrieve any hard drive that contains our content, etc. Our content is extraordinarily valuable and hard to replicate by the sweat of one's brow, but can be duplicated by savvy hackers and who knows what they want to do with the content?

I think the important thing to note here is that JSTOR had worked with MIT and had plans in place to prevent future similar downloads, but remained focused on identifying the person responsible for the downloads and ensuring that their data was deleted.

"I might just be irked because I am up dealing with this person on a Sunday night, but I am starting to feel like they need to get a hold of this situation right away or we need to offer to send them some help (read FBI).

And there it is. Page 3093 of the document.

JSTOR can hem and haw about it all they want, but you can't un-call the cops.

MIT was working with JSTOR on preventing future incidents of pirating, but JSTOR repeatedly said that they weren't going to let it go, that it was unacceptable to drop the issue, that they were going to continue to pursue the pirate.

You can scroll through the document and see the JSTOR tech department and abuse team talking about Swartz as a script kiddie, and a hacker. You can see someone talking about how this was real theft - making the comparison to stealing books even while admitting that piracy doesn't close others out of access.

You can see the thread starts with a joke about punching someone in the face for hacking their system, and includes the tech team ominously considering whether they should threaten the MIT librarians with the FBI.

There's something really important to note here which I don't think that people who aren't PRETTY DEEP into hackery shit aren't aware of: US law enforcement is absolutely rabidly feral about prosecuting hackers. People may be more aware of this now because of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden (and perhaps a bit on tumblr because of maia arson crimew), but people who work in tech and who are in infosec - like the people joking about calling the FBI in these emails - would be aware of the bonkers disproportionate punishments faced by hackers. And knowing that, they kept pushing and pushing and pushing for identification of the hacker. They kept digging with MIT, they kept saying that simply preventing future incidents wasn't enough.

Early in the exchange someone from JSTOR asked "what's wrong with us - or the university in collaboration with us - alerting the cyber-crimes division of law enforcement and initiating an investigation, having cop search dorm room and try to retrieve any hard drive that contains our content, etc." and the answer is what happened to Aaron Swartz.

It is absolute bullshit for JSTOR to say "we arrived at a solution privately and didn't want to press charges" after law enforcement has gotten involved with a hacking case, especially one where they're talking about "real theft" and are attempting to quantify and emphasize the amount that was "stolen" from them.

The *public* may believe that private individuals or institutions are the ones who "press charges" but that's simply not the case. It's prosecutors who decide whether or not to go ahead with charges; they do it based on what cases they think they can win and what their office's perspective is on the crime. When you hear about people choosing to press charges it simply means that they decided to tell the prosecutor they wanted the case to go forward. It's up to the prosecutor whether or not that happens.

And the tech team at JSTOR had to know that law enforcement wasn't just going to wag a finger at an academic hacker.

There's a parallel here that happens sometimes when people have their identities stolen by their parents. If you mom takes out a credit card in your name, that's identity theft. That's fraud. That's illegal. If you reach the age of 25 and realize that your credit is ruined because your mom has been defaulting on cards in your name, you've got two choices to fix that: one is to accept the debt and pay it off and build up credit, and the other is to report the identity theft - which will end up with your mom in prison for a decade or so. Ruin your own personal finances, or your mom goes to jail for ruining your finances. So if you find out that your mom stole your identity you can't just call the cops to pressure her into transferring the debt to her name or something. That's not an option. The cops are not a threat to wave over people, they are not a way to get people to fall in line or act right. They aren't someone you can send to a college student's dorm room to retrieve a hard drive and have the matter drop.

When you call the cops on someone you are sending the full force of the law after them, and the full force of the law falls really heavily on hackers, and how heavy that blow can be is something that the JSTOR team must have been aware of when they were making snide comments about calling the FBI because they were frustrated with the noncommittal responses they were getting from librarians.

Ultimately it was the carceral state that killed Aaron Swartz, but they would not have been involved if JSTOR didn't think that what he did constituted theft.

Taking an *EVEN LARGER* step back from that, the idea that information can be owned and locked behind a paywall is what killed Aaron Swartz, someone who fought for information to be free.

Like. JSTOR is a licensing company. At the end of the day, cute social media posts and all, they're the same as the RIAA and ASCAB. They exist to extract a fee from people attempting to access information.

Aaron Swartz and all that he stood for are an existential threat to their core function.

Are JSTOR's hands as dirty as the federal prosecutors? Absolutely not. But they operate on a model that puts them in opposition to open information activists and it ended up with a hammer falling on Aaron Swartz that they dropped.

Yes.

Okay so here's how the math works.

She gets 12.73x larger (going from 162cm to 2062cm) when she uses her Quirk. This will increase the size of her muscles and by extension her strength by 12.73 times. The problem is that she weights 2,062 times more in her giant form.

(Side note: I am convinced that it's not a coincidence that her full height is equal to 162 * √162)

In order for her to be able to move without her body shattering under her own weight and dying horribly, she has to have superstrength, specifically she has to be 12.73x stronger, relative to her size/weight.

However. While this addresses the strength problems, it fails to address the other concerns that come from scaling up the human body. Namely, the heart, the lungs, the nervous system, and body heat. The increase in her surface area is much less than the increase in volume. She'd cook herself. She can't get enough blood and oxygen through her body. Her movements should be slower.

You could handwave all of this as part of the same mechanism that gives her superstrength.

But here's where we start running into the actual issues.

According to some quick googling of flatbed trucks, that truck weighs about 10,000 pounds at minimum. Even accounting for her needed superstrength, it should still be like lifting an 830 pound shoe over your head.

At her larger size, assuming she has an average weight, she should weigh roughly 170 to 175 tons. How the hell did Compress knock her over and not just get flattened?

Not to mention her Quirk as stated has some odd questions, like why she only has two sizes and can't stop growing partway.

My conclusion is that her Quirk isn't making her bigger, it's warping space to project her larger. This spatial warping has some kind of associated gravitational effect, and she subconsciously uses that to lift things she shouldn't be able to. Because she doesn't realize that's how her Quirk works, she keeps going to full size because it's not 'grow until you are this tall,' it's 'project yourself to this size.' She gets knocked flat so easily because she doesn't know she has a defensive gravitational shell around her to use it.

Your art piqued my interest... for someone who has never read x men, do you have any recommendations for issues for Jean and Scott??

i have been holding onto this for a while bc i think this is kind of a tough question. for me, the things that i am really into with jean and scott are kind of dependent on like. a little bit of background knowledge. like i love them in x-factor (1986, and i do recommend it) but x-factor 1986 is also the follow-up to the dark phoenix saga and that whole storyline, and really hits in part bc of readers' familiarity with phoenix, imo.

anyway i THINK what i am going to do is give you a list i am copying and pasting from an ask where somebody asked me for issues to speedrun scott and jean:

X-men Season One, and X-men: First Class #2. this will give you a basic (though not really canon) idea of their teenage deal. you could also read silver age x-men if you want but it is an extreme pain in the ass a lot of the time and it sounds like you probably don't want to deal with that.

Unsolicited opinions about the colourisation of the Daleks

aka just watch the Peter Cushing movie for the same experience but better

all right, so I watched the colourisation last night, and while I enjoyed it I couldn't help but come away unsure of the point.

So it has two major changes, being in colour obviously, and cutting a 175 minute story down to just 75. going into it I was. most sceptical about it being in colour, just because I didn't think the promotional images looked very good, but overall it looked well done to me, there were a couple of colour choices that threw me off, but it was fine to look at

However, this isn't a story that benefits from being in colour. one of the main things the daleks has going for it is the atmosphere, especially in the dalek city with the long white corridors, adding colour somewhat removed that feeling of sterility and strips the story of its atmosphere. a lot of the moments when I was put off by the colour, maybe even all of them, were in the dalek city, it just didn't quite work the same.

the colourisation wasn't really a problem in the forest in the same way, in fact I quite liked it. one thing I did enjoy that I didn't notice in black and white was the thal trousers having holes cut in the side

one thing that did disappoint was the edited runtime, going in I thought it would work quite well, the daleks has a lot of padding, there's a lot you can remove and the story will still work. the first half hour or so was brilliantly paced so I thought it was going to work but then, The Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan make their escape, the story suddenly feels break neck and difficult to follow, it never quite finds its footing again

another side awkward side affect of cutting the story down is the flashbacks to stuff we've seen in a way that feels awkward and intrusive. apparently this is to hide cuts made within a scene, and is technically necessary so I am willing to forgive it

the thing is, in theory the reduced runtime should work, the Peter Cushing movie is about the same length and tells the same story, it doesn't have pacing issues. the difference of course is that the Peter Cushing movie was specifically written to be it's length where this is cobbled together from a much longer story. the movie also also works in colour because that's what it was made for. and so you reach a point where if you want to watch the daleks in colour, surely Dr Who and the Daleks is the better option as its just more cohesive

(the other problem I had with this, which on its face should only have been a minor change, was the new music. it was pervasive and distracting, an often worsened the pacing issues, it didn't fit and it didn't work and I fi don't at least mention it I'll explode)

(also I enjoyed the montage at the end more than the story itself)

ok yknow what im just gonna straight up vent about work rn bc i ran out of tags on the other post

its become such a fucking shitshow down there jesus christ i cannot fucking stand it anymore. communication doesnt exist, i dont even remember the last time back of house had a fucking meeting. the owner pushed for us to stay open during a blizzard where it was a wind chill of -40. i mean holy fuck, the city said dont travel unless its an emergency

i had issues on sunday that i wasnt sure about, but our chef was out of town doing a show with his band, and our sous chef was sitting at the bar in the restaurant a good 5 or 6 beers deep by the time i ran into this problem. i asked the other supervisor (who agrees with me that this is a shitshow) and he wasnt sure either so we straight up guessed

i only make 15 an hour despite having been there for a whole fucking year, because i only get supervisor pay when im clocked in as supervisor. which is a measly 8 of my 40 hours. but god forbid i dont act like a supervisor for all 40 hours

insurance is unsustainably expensive there. my coworker who makes 13.50 an hour takes home *more than i do per paycheck* at this point. and he works 32 hours! i havent taken home more than 750 a pay check since getting insurance! i used to be grossing 1000! IM LITERALLY PAYING 175 DOLLARS EVERY PAY CHECK! AND THATS ABOUT TO GO UP TO ALMOST 180 WHEN I TURN 27! im not making any fucking money! im not getting any savings!

not to mention they fucked up my insurance not that long ago! i was told at the doctors office and the pharmacy that i had zero coverage! but they were still taking money from my fucking paycheck for it! like holy fuck i shouldve talked to goddamn lawyer about that instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt!

i was 110% fine with making 15 an hour and doing nothing but pizzas. because the trade off was that i could cut out early, i could trade shifts, if i got sick it wasnt fucking everyone else over. but now i cant do any of that. i have to close on saturdays, dont get home and in bed until 1:30 some nights, and then have to get up and go do a 10 hour shift every sunday. every weekend! every fucking weekend! and im the only one that does that anymore! im not the only one doing a double on sunday, but im the only one who has to close the night before. and because im just exhausted by the end of a sunday, my mondays are practically wasted because im catching up on sleep!

i like. cant fucking do this anymore. i cant think of any reason why im still there. i could go worl at fucking sams club in the bakery, start at the same wage (if not more), have *less* responsibilities, be doing something i want to do, and they close at 8 every day. i dont think theyre even open on sundays!

why am i still working there? its not sustainable for me anymore. my body is fucked. its falling apart ahead of schedule. i cant even open my door in the morning because of carpal tunnel. im 26 and when i crouch down i cant always get back up. the other night my ankle just started popping every time i turned around. what am i doing? what am i doing. i dont know.

i dont even have energy left over to draw. or make stained glass. or even do a discord call. the last time i had an actual date with my partner was, what, like 4 fucking months ago? i dont have any energy left over. im using it all for a place that i dont enjoy working at anymore, and i know i wont get better hours. our sous chef has been here since the place opened and he only has night shifts. the only day he doesnt is sunday. which is 8am to 3pm.

our new hire has sunday-monday off. why cant i have that? i want a weekend day off. its not gonna happen in this industry. its not gonna happen in this kitchen. i cant do this for the next however many years,

Pansy’s dark eyebrows rose up into hair.  “Hi?  Are you bloody kidding me?  You send some lawyer here with fucking divorce papers and all you can say to me is hi?  Hi!”

Greg swallowed.  “Pansy, I —”

Pansy slapped his arm.  She was so much shorter and smaller than him that he barely felt it.  “How dare you try to divorce me without talking to me first!”

“Pansy —”

“—No!”  she shrieked.  “I am your wife, Gregory Goyle!  Your wife!  We are married and we have a child together!  Does that mean nothing to you?”

“What?  Of course it does,” he insisted.  “But you didn’t want to marry me.  I just… I want to free you from that obligation.”

“Obligation!”  Pansy exclaimed, her fist hitting him in the arm.  “What is wrong with you?”

Her fists kept hitting him, but she was so small that they did nothing and when he attempted to grab her hands to stop him, she shoved him.  Only Greg was made of solid muscle and twice her height; he didn’t so much as move an inch.

“Argh!”  Pansy screamed, shoving him again.

He still didn’t so much as budge.

Pansy shoved him a third time.  “WHY WON’T YOU BLOODY FALL OVER!”

Greg’s lips twitched as he bit back a laugh and when he attempted to grab her hands again, she yanked herself away from him and took off her shoe, whipping it at his head.  Greg ducked just in time.  He held his hands up in surrender.

“Pansy, can we just — bloody hell!”

Greg ducked again to avoid her second shoe.  He thought that he was safe to stand again, but the marble bust from the end table suddenly came flying at his head.  Greg barely moved out of the way in time as it crashed to the floor.

“What the fuck, Parkinson?”  Draco exclaimed, scowling from the door to the parlour.  “Do you know how much that bloody cost?”

“Piss off, Draco!”  Pansy shrieked.  “If this bloody wall would just take a hit, I wouldn’t have to break things over him!”

Greg made to reach for her again, but she kicked him in the shin.  “Ow!”

“Bloody hell,” Draco exclaimed, ducking when Pansy picked up a glass vase and chucked it towards Goyle.  “Stop breaking my things!”

“Get out, Malfoy!”  she screamed as the vase shattered against the wall.  “GET OUT!  GET OUT!  GET OUT!”

Ron’s hand clasped his.  “Look, I know you’re jealous because I’m getting all these new sexy-arse scars and I have this perfect arse and killer blue eyes, but you just have to admit it, Harry.”

“Admit what, exactly?”  Harry asked, giving his friend an amused look.

Harry’s lips twitched.  “I admit it, you’re sexy as hell, Ron, but we both know that Goldstein’s better looking.”

“Take that back!”  Ron roared, dropping Harry’s hand.  “Take it back right now!”

Ron placed a hand over his heart.  “I need a healer.  My best mate has just caused my heart to stop.  You’ve killed me.”

Ron’s eyes narrowed.  “Did Ginny find something?  What do you know?”

Harry shrugged.  “She hinted that she might have.”

Ron grinned widely.  “I can’t wait to find the witch responsible and tell her all the reasons why she’s wrong.”

“Yeah?”  Ron asked, still rubbing his hands together in anticipation.

“You’re a bloody moron.”

Ron shrugged.  “Takes one to know one.”  At Harry’s grin, Ron grabbed his hand again.  “And I love you, too.”

Before Goyle could answer, a red spark hit the ground near Theo’s head and he winced.  Goyle rolled him before he pulled him to his feet.  When Theo looked over, Lestrange was dead and part of the stone from the courtyard had collapsed where Theo had just been standing.

My #1 post of 2022

Exciting news for me to share!

A few select people are already in the loop aka @seriouslysam8 @thedistantdusk @celtics534 @ellieoryan7447 and @bellmel

But after talking to Sam about an idea I had -- which turned into multiple ideas after idea bouncing with Sam -- she helped me decide to make my wonderful world of ASC into a trilogy which I am calling

Kismet Trilogy

1. The First Time Around

Told in snippets and short stories of moments in the lives of the Marauders, from how they first met, to how James and Lily fell in love, to how Peter betrayed them. It will end with Sirius going to Azkaban.

2. A Second Chance

The story that you've all come to love. The story of Sirius only spending 4 years in prison before he is finally given a trial and able to raise Harry with Remus the way he should have. It is the story of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin as they learn what it means to be a father/brother/guardian to Harry while finding love themselves and the story of Harry Potter, a young boy with a loving home who learns about the Marauders from the two men who should have raised him and grows into the man who will lead the war against Voldemort. Slow burn Hinny.

3. TBA Third Story

Will pick up where ASC leaves off and continue into the future of the world and characters you've all come to love.

Why now you ask?

Well, I have Marauder memories that I want to use and sadly, they just don't all fit into my story.

I have ideas on things that I want to do with the future of my living characters in ASC and starting a new story might be the best way to do that.

And finally, because I am really excited to tell you that my world is not ending in the near future and I will provide you with more Hinny goodness and other couples to come.

I am calling the trilogy Kismet which is fate/destiny; a predetermined or unavoidable destiny; the property of being lucky; the, usually unfortunate, way of the world.

I think it sums up what I want to do and what I have done so far in ASC and I am excited to share this news with you all!

Chapter One -- The One Where Muggles are Filth will be posted this weekend (it starts in the year 1965 and is from the POV of Sirius Black). Many of the memories have been mentioned and/or shared in ASC already, but many of them have been extended and many of them are brand new.

I think it will allow those people who love Jily/Marauder a new fic to love in my ASC world and for those interested, it will provide more background on our loveable Marauders and Jily.

If all goes to plan, every weekend I will drop 2 chapters. One from The First Time Around (FTA) and one from A Second Chance (ASC).

One thing I find gross not just about your stalkers but your fans is that you're an entertainer, yet they seem to act like you're also an activist, a therapist, a counsellor and a social worker. It doesn't bother me that sometimes you have some politically weird takes because you usually correct them when called on it, but also you're not involved in activism. If it was coming from an activist I'd be more concerned, but your politics are just pretty baseline "good person." So it's pretty gross to see people complaining that you won't dedicate your time and energy to their pet causes or causes you just don't have knowledge on.

Just something that came to mind after seeing someone complain that you don't talk about indigenous issues despite saying multiple times you don't have the knowledge or foundation to speak on it.

Here's the thing. They aren't doing it earnestly.

My fans don't think I'm an actual therapist, it's just easier to ask the opinionated lady on the internet very personal things than fork out $175 for an actual therapist. And it feeds into that parasocial fandom attitude where it's okay to softly dehumanize content creators and trauma dump on them.

As for my stalkers, they're making shit up to pretend to be mad about. There's no internal logic behind it, it's all just grasping at straws.

But you are right. I am just an entertainer, and my political knowledge is the same as someone who has to live in this hellscape, and someone who is part of art discourse for a living. I don't presume to be better at activism than card carrying activists. I don't presume to be better at anything than an actual professional, except being a better writer than the very bottom of the barrel of published writers. I don't presume expertise, all my knowledge is second hand.

But we are in an era where we get our news from comedians so I can understand the confusion there.

I'm hopeful that my new medication will minimize the side effects and improve my overall well-being. I'm also eagerly waiting for some books I ordered to arrive, wondering if they might come in soon, especially since Nellie, who also ordered, hasn't received hers yet.

Considering calling it a night soon, although staying at Mary’s means braving the cold and the less-than-ideal cleanliness, but it's all part of the adventure, I guess.

At the beginning of the week, a mysterious locker appeared in Desertia square. Reportedly, someone inside asked for a password upon the locker being knocked on. Somehow the password was guessed and the locker revealed itself to be the chao black market. There were ten chao eggs in total, though two of them have yet to find a new home. The following individuals have obtained a chao: robot catgirl QWERTY and her chao SMILEB, Samus Kitten and her chao Koh, Gym Leader Mimi So&so and their chao Mandy jr, June Egbert and her chao Gumdrop, Brae Emit and her chao..."cool guy"? (is this the right name?), and Jobeth and her chao Punk Daniels. Reportedly, two other chao were claimed by anonymous figures. It is assumed that one may have been sent to Voidco hq, while the other one was apparently sent to Chaos Obama's Island Nation.

For the most part, things have been relatively quiet this week. Tangentially, I've been drawing a part of the story where Blaze traveled with Prince of Time River to meet their Denizen Morpheus. This has increased my sorrow and longing, despite the fact that I barely knew Blaze personally. Day Six: It’s All About The Chelonoidis Niger

5:45 am comes around very quickly when you are on holiday. But, after a quick shower and breakfast, our group of Boobies were in the Zodiac and headed off as the sun rose to see the Chelonoidis Niger, or Galapagos Island Tortoise. We had to leave early as the day was going to be a busy one.

We disembarked at Santa Cruz Island and boarded a bus to take us to the highland where thousands of these incredible creatures still roam free. There are 12 living sub-species of these huge vegetarians of the 15 thought to have been here before human interaction. They can grow to a top weight of 700-800 pounds with most mature and older males reaching weights around 300-400. Ages of these behemoths are hard to calculate, but most estimates are in the 175 range. The notion that you can tell by counting the rings on the shell, sort of like tree rings, is a myth. These tortoises are born with a fixed number of rings on their shells and with time, the rings eventually fade away with the oldest ones having basically smooth shells. They eat grasses, plants, and cactus and can go very long periods without having to eat anything or drink water at all. This ability has made it possible for these animals to thrive in the 5 to 6 months of the dry season when there is little to eat and even less to drink. But, history tells us that this made them easy pickings for the human invaders who almost drove them to extinction. Sailors found that these docile creatures could be easily caught and stacked in the bottom of their ships providing protein and fatty food for at least a year. The logs of whaling ships alone attest to the fact that 100,000 tortoises were taken off the islands between the period if 1784-1860. Conservation scientists estimate that the total haul was closer to 300,000. There are now about 30,000 total, due to the efforts of strict penalties for capture and species rewinding. For the last 75 years, over 10,000 have been reared in captivity and released into the wild.

They are free to roam anywhere they choose and most live in areas inaccessible to humans. Many, however, roam across private land and these are the ones that we were searching for. The bus took us to someone’s farm and we roamed about, and after not too long, we’re fortunate to see many. Some were lumbering along, some sleeping in the ponds that dotted the property. Some big, some very big. All magnificent. And again, like all species we have encountered so far, oblivious to our being there. It was a lovely way to spend a lovely sunny morning.

The company that owns and operates our boat offers four four-day routes around the islands. We were booked for the first two of them, but for many of the folks on board, this was the last adventure of their route. We said goodbye to some of our new friends as they headed back to the airport on Santa Cruz for their journey home.

For Diane and I and the rest, this marked our halfway point. So we boarded the bus for a journey to the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Center, started by The Charles Darwin Conservancy on the other side of Santa Cruz Island. This is where we saw what they actually do to sustain and increase the wild tortoise populations of all of these islands. First there was a delightful museum which explained what they do there (especially delightful as the place was air-conditioned and the day was quite sweltering once we left the highlands). Tortoise eggs are taken from the wild from each of the species on each of the islands and raised after approximately 5 years into their natural habitat. So they are bred in the wild and raised in captivity, ensuring that they are safe from any predators in the only stage in their life when predators are an issue. The program has been incredibly successful with upwards of 85-90% success rate. Program managers see a day in the not too distant future when the program may not be necessary. Well done!

Also in the facility are some older giants that have been rescued for one reason or another, nursed back to health, and allowed to depend their golden years at the facility. If you are looking for someplace to donate some extra cash, you certainly should consider this place.

One of the things that I thought was most interesting was one particular species, the saddleback tortoise, a native to seven of the Galápagos Islands. Its shell tilts skyward just behind its head enabling it to stretch its very long neck high in the air to reach the leaves of taller bushes on these islands. The Spanish who first encountered these creatures thought the shells resembled saddles and gave them the name for saddle at that time, “galapago”, and eventually that is where the Islands got their name. Also, it is said that this stretched out neck on one of these creatures at The San Diego Zoo is where Steven Spielberg got the idea for the neck and head of his and our beloved E.T., The Extra Terrestrial.

Alejandro gave us an hour or so to walk back to the bus through the small town near the tortoise center where Diane and I had a refreshing beverage by the seaside before boarding the bus for the journey back across the island.

I had always wanted to see these magnificent animals. What a great day.

Research Part 1

According to the Te Whatu Ora Suicide Web Tool, In 2018, Aotearoa had a severe number of suicides with 175 Females confirmed to have passed compared to the Males which with 451 confirmed passings.

The strong difference in numbers between Males and Females make the topic of Men's Mental Health more important to address so those numbers can go down.

I often find myself asking this question. I understand that mental health and mental illness can be bluntly anxiety and depression but my understanding may be a bit more personal. My understanding of mental health from a masculine perspective can feel a lot more surreal. To feel emotions and not feel comfortable to explain them is an incredibly lonely and difficult. In trying to avoid the action of speaking up and talking about feelings I have witnessed substance abuse as a coping mechanism for dealing with mental illness where as it just adds to the issue and worsens the condition. In the Journal Critical Issues in Men's Mental Health by Dan Bilsker, Andrea S. Fogarty, and Matthew A. Wakefield (2018) they state how men deal with mental health through the abuse of substances.

"Recent reviews have attributed the use of negative coping styles to the tendency of some men to adhere rigidly to certain stereotyped features of masculinity: misuse of alcohol and drugs to numb distress; concealing and ignoring negative emotions; engaging in risky behaviours; or valuing self-reliance and autonomy over professional care."

Through this research I able able to understand the topic deeper with the knowledge of key concepts pop how men currently cope with negative emotions. I will now be able to create media productions helping me address these issues and how we can better manage ourselves.

I have also taken the time to look at a Ted Talk with Allan Keller. This talk was fantastic.

I found that I gathered a more in personal understanding of mental health, specially with men and the stigma they face that they can't talk or that is isn't masculine. Allan also helped break the stigma by addressing the issue directly and opening up with his own personal experiences!

With this talk I feel like I have been given more topics to discuss and address.

These topics include: Masculinity, Unhealthy Stigmas, Addressing support and accessibility, and finally how to give others insight on how to help their friends, family, and peers.

I have also gathered insight on media coverage and how to direct a message whilst keeping the audiences attention. I am eager to take ideas from this talk and experiment with it in my own media productions.
