A Feathursday of Wood-Engraved Parrots
This week we showcase some Psittaciformes engraved in wood by the Brothers Dalziel from the Birds volume of The Illustrated Natural History by English natural history writer John George Wood (1827-1889), published in London by George Routledge & Sons in 1865.
J. G. Wood was not a professional zoologist, but rather an ordained priest who relinquished his pastoral duties to become one of the most well-known parson-naturalists of the Victorian era, especially for his numerous publications and his famous public lectures both in Great Britain and America.
The Brothers Dalziel was a prominent family wood-engraving business founded in 1839 by George Dalziel (1815-1902), and composed of four brothers and one sister. The engravings shown here were made from illustrations by several artists, including William Stephen Coleman, Harrison Weir, and T. W. Wood.

I want to see Jordan Peele do a zombie movie, where the leading cast are the black actors (the more prominent ones) from The Walking Dead whose characters died on the show.

I thought Queen Victoria's older half-sister Feodora possibly marrying King George IV was just made-up for the TV show "Victoria" but that's not totally true? Within the episode it's a major source of resentment by Feodora (Kate Fleetwood) towards her family and in particular her little half-sister (Jenna Coleman) which seems like dramatic license, but the actual mini-courtship seems to based on some reality and it went far enough with The Princess Sophia being a promoter of it?
I don’t have much interest in watching the show and can’t speak to it as an adaptation of real-world events, but Victoria made a passing reference to this potential engagement in her 1872 memoir. Reminiscing about visiting George IV in 1826, as a little girl of seven, she remarked that “[t]he King paid great attention to my Sister, and some people fancied he might marry her”. Personally, I doubt whether George IV would have really been interested in marrying again (given the utter disaster of his first marriage), much less to a 19-year-old some 45 years his junior, especially when he was in pretty poor health, in the last years of his life, and already had a long-term mistress. (Nor did George IV need to guarantee the succession, given that he had a ready heir presumptive in his brother William, as well as four nieces and nephews by 1826, Victoria included.)
Nevertheless, the mere threat of Feodora marrying someone rich and powerful, even if not the King, seems to have motivated the Duchess of Kent and Sir John Conroy to wed Feodora to someone distant and powerless. Indeed, Conroy bluntly reminded the Duchess that “[i]t is necessary for your and the Pss. Victoria’s interest that it [i.e Feodora’s marriage] should take place”, because “the interest you ought to have over [Victoria] will be endangered if she sees an older sister not so alive to it as she should be” (adding ominously that “once your authority is lost over the Princess V. you will never regain it”). The solution, for the Duchess and Conroy, was Prince Ernest of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, ruler of a tiny German toy kingdom with very little money (certainly by princely standards).

To say that Mark Coleman, the godfather of Ground and Pound, had an illustrious and trailblazing career in MMA would be one of the more spectacular understatements of all time. On that one "off" day, Coleman found himself late in the match and completely gassed, which is about as deep in the water as you can get. And I'm pretty sure I read an interview once where Coleman talked about how much that sucks, but that the worst part was that Petey Williams' kick to the face for the KO wound up being on the goddamned UFC highlight reels for... Well forever...
Sandra produces videos, Lilith runs a club, and there's kind of an informal partnership going on here - particularly when it comes to promotional materials. One of those agreements is that, when Sandra takes photos during a video session to help market the video, she'll also often share photos with Lilith to advertise an upcoming show.
On the day it's not just warm, it's *hot*, and filming a video for Sandra against a recognisable tattooed redhead, Corveena is well and truly holding her own. I mean obviously keeping herself inside this particularly revealing suit is a lost cause, but that's not hurting anything. Late in the match, both women are tired, soaked in sweat, neither of them is actually gassed however. Well maybe Corveena is a little bit? There's only a minute or two left in this match, and Corveena is up five falls to two today. Corveena loses her back, and then her neck. She grabs hold, she struggles... And as the pressure closes around her neck she has that moment where two things happen. First, she realises she needs to tap out. Second, she makes eye contact with the camera.
Ah s--t. Is the immediate though, and then that she needs to tap now.
Corveena is a dancer also in case anyone had forgotten, an exotic dancer to be precise. But a couple of days later when she gets the email that Lilith is putting on another wrestling show Corveena is almost a given, but of course she's asked and of course she says yes. But the show is a few weeks away, and tonight it's serving and dancing.
And that's when she sees the promotional poster, very large, just inside the entrance to Lilith's club.
And now the immediate thought is a much more impolite word.
The worst part? Every single damn guy she ends up within earshot of... "Hey, is that you?".
Three weeks until the show. Please... Please... Please... Do not let this be the photo Lilith uses to advertise any of the ones in future...

A quick six-decade history of BBC's Doctor Who
The 23rd of November, 2023, marks the 60th anniversary of BBC's flagship TV series, Doctor Who. From Classic Who to Modern Who, from William Hartnell to Jodie Whitaker, the megahit TV series became the hallmark of the sci-fi genre since its 1963 airing and evolved into a mixed media project that served as one of the BBC's success stories.
With only two days left before the first part of the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials airing on BBC in the UK and on the Disney+ streaming service globally, how did we go from here? The past, present, and future of the Doctor Who series?
Tumblr media
Classic Who - Aired on the BBC on November 23rd, 1963, William Hartnell is the very first actor to play The Doctor in the said series, forever laying the foundation of the Doctor Who series. The Classic Who era welcomed the most iconic Doctors in TV history from Hartnell to Sylvester McCoy, a memorable cast of characters, monsters, and a rogue gallery of villains ranging from Daleks, Cybermen, and even his arch nemesis, The Master. Seven classic Doctors (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy) are forever known as legends not just in the franchise but in the entire TV sci-fi genre.
16 years of void - The Sylvester McCoy era became the final era of the Classic Who and when the TV show was laid to rest in 1989, it left a 16-year void before its 2005 comeback. Of course, the whole Doctor Who team tried bringing it back on May 27, 1996, with a TV movie aired on FOX, starring Paul McGann as The Doctor, but feels like the comeback didn't work as expected.
2005 return - On March 26, 2005, Doctor Who is back on the telly after a 16-year absence. With Russell T Davies serving as the showrunner and actor Christopher Eccleston playing the role of The Doctor, the 2005 revival signaled the start of the Modern Who era. Joining Eccleston is Billie Piper who plays the role of his companion, Rose Tyler, the two witnessed how the world ended, facing off against the Daleks, preventing world catastrophe, and uncovering the truth.
Greatest Doctor of All Time? - Christopher Eccleston's reign as The Doctor lasted for 13 episodes, the entire first season of the reborn Doctor Who TV series, and got replaced by actor David Tennant at the season finale. Making his first moves at the 2005 Christmas Special, David Tennant cemented his status as the GOAT in the Modern Who times. In fact, Tennant's making a comeback in the 60th anniversary special as the 14th Doctor! This marks the first in the Doctor Who franchise a Doctor actor doing two non-consecutive terms.
Teaming alongside Piper as Rose, Freema Agyeman as Martha, and John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness aside, the most popular companion in the David Tennant years is none other than Donna Noble, played by comedienne Catherine Tate. First met at the 2006 Christmas special, the two reunite at the beginning of the fourth season and with past companions collide, including the late Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, a legend companion from the Classic Who times, it showcased the show's exploding popularity.
New Decade, New Who - David Tennant's time ended at the beginning of 2010, and with Russell T Davies stepped down from his showrunner duties, Steven Moffat took over and actor Matt Smith filled in the shoes of The Doctor, signaling the new era of Doctor Who. From The Eleventh Hour to The Time of The Doctor, the Matt Smith years shifted the Doctor Who era to a more family-friendly approach.
During his tenure, the Matt Smith years of Doctor Who introduced companions such as Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams, and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. Actress Alex Kingston, who showed up in the David Tennant years as River Song, popped up as well, showing her origin story and her shocking relationship with Amy and Rory.
After the 2013 Christmas Special, Smith was replaced by Peter Capaldi, showing off his darker undertones while keeping the mantra of protecting the universe by all means. Apart from teaming up with Jenna Coleman as Clara, the Peter Capaldi years welcomed Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts and comedian Matt Lucas as Nardole, who first appeared in the 2015 Christmas Special.
Fast fact that both Gillan and Capaldi got their early stints in the DW Season 4 episode titled The Fires of Pompeii.
50 years of DW - November 23rd, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and to celebrate that occasion, a 50th-anniversary TV special, titled The Day of The Doctor, was aired. The Doctors, played by Matt Smith and David Tennant, joined forces with their mysterious predecessor known as The War Doctor, played by the late John Hurt, who popped up at the end of the 7th season. Racing against time, the three Doctors join forces to save the universe.
Long before the explosive 50th-anniversary special went on air, a biopic titled An Adventure of Space and Time was aired, starring David Bradley as William Hartnell, the 1st Doctor. Also, a Doctor Who web short was streamed, showcasing the 8th Doctor getting regenerated into The War Doctor, filling the void that was left after the 1996 TV movie.
Breaking the series' boundaries - The Peter Capaldi years signaled the final time Steven Moffat served as the showrunner and their time ended in the 2017 Christmas Special, Twice Upon A Time, which featured Bradley as The 1st Doctor, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall took over the series as the showrunner. Breaking the series' boundaries, the 11th season of Doctor Who welcomed the series' first female Doctor, Jodie Whitaker. During her four-year tenure from 2018 to 2022, the 13th Doctor joined forces with Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), Yaz Khan (Mandip Gill), Graham O'Brien (Bradley Walsh), and Dan Lewis (John Bishop). Together, they've faced numerous enemies, new and old, including the reborn Master (played by Sacha Dhawan), while learning the truth about The Doctor's origins.
Loose ends? - As the Jodie Whitaker years came to an end, it was announced that actor Ncuti Gatwa would take over the role of The Doctor, but first, David Tennant will reprise his Doctor role in the 60th-anniversary specials. Why bring Tennant back to Who? Unanswered questions between The Doctor and Donna Noble after the end of the Season 4 finale. With them returning in the three-part specials, they have one loose end to mend before The Doctor can attain his true regeneration, and that's what the world awaits.
Spin-offs and mixed media - The Whoniverse expands outside the world of Doctor Who with official spin-offs featuring iconic characters and settings such as the R-rated spin-off series, Torchwood, which stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper, among others, the kid-friendly The Sarah Jane Adventures where DW legend Elisabeth Sladen reprises her Sarah Jane Smith role and teams up with a group of kids battling alien threats, and then there's Class, which is set at Coal Hill High, the same school appeared in the world of Doctor Who. Word from the outside world is there was a TV show called K-9, which features The Doctor's robot ally K-9 in its entirely new form.
TV shows aside, the Whoniverse also expands outside the TV screens in the form of comic books, novels, audio dramas, and others. One such example is the Doom's Day project which features a mysterious character named Doom as she spreads across the Whoniverse from comic books to audio dramas, racing for her life to find The Doctor. The Doom's Day project is part of Doctor Who's six-decade celebrations.
Six decades of Doctor Who, no, the Whoniverse. The past, present, and future of the Whoniverse will never stop expanding and as the world prepares for the show's 60th-anniversary specials and the imminent arrival of the new Doctor, expect brilliant things to come in the Whoniverse.
Happy 60th anniversary to the Whoniverse!

The American West: A New Interpretive History (Second Edition)
When the first edition of The American West: A New Interpretive History, penned by Professor Robert V. Hine (1921 - 2015) and Professor John Mack Faragher, was published in 2000, it was an instant success despite the field of the American West history already having a comprehensive list of popular books. During the production of the second edition, Jon T. Coleman joined in the writing process. Hine, Faragher, and Coleman examine the American West in a similar fashion as the trend of the American West history research made popular by historians like Patricia Limerick and William Cronon. This scholarship trend that the book’s title refers to - the “New Western History” which started around the 1980s - focuses on the history that the early studies led by Frederick Jackson Turner overlooked: the environment, gender, and multi-ethnic interactions. This second edition of the 2000 version provides new materials on the research on Native American history and historical popular media done in the 21st century.
This second edition of the 2000 version provides new materials on the research on Native American history and historical popular media done in the 21st century.
The American West’s history has been a topic of exploration, prejudice, romanticization, supremacy, and war. With the fast-advancing transportation and communication technology, the definition of “the American West” changes as well. The “West” to a traveler on the transcontinental railroad during the 1870s is drastically different from what a person catching a Sunday flight from Boston to Los Angeles might think. It is no easy task to cover this complicated history in one book, and many have not done an impressive job with it. This is why it is especially helpful and effective when this book’s three authors sacrifice some historical depth to expand the width.

9-1-1: LONE STAR REACTION
This reaction is for season 4, thirteenth episode "Open" which originally aired April 18, 2023. The episode was written by Wolfe Coleman and directed by John J. Gray. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
Okay, let's talk Lone Star! I really enjoyed this episode. It was a great balance of funny, drama and some action. Our beloved Grace Ryder does most of the emotional heavy-lifting this episode while Captain Strand provides the comedy. I also enjoyed each of the emergency sequences of this episode, however, the last one we get in this episode is perhaps one of the most gruesome things I have seen on either 9-1-1 show but we will get to that later. Let's talk about what happened with Owen first.
Tumblr media
We see Owen is still carrying on his dalliance with wealthy heiress Kendra Harrington Michaela McManus) but things take a turn for the bizarre when her husband comes home in the middle of one of their romantic trysts. Kendra comes clean about having an open relationship and Owen is justifiably uncomfortable with the whole situation.
Things get even weirder when Kendra's husband, Brett Collier (Clarke Thorell) shows up at the firehouse. Apparently Owen accidentally grabbed his glasses off the nightstand before he left the house. This scene was so cringy and it was one of the rare moments where I truly felt bad for Owen. Owen can be pretty cavalier when it comes to his romantic life but having the husband of the woman you're hooking up with on the regular show up to your job is absolutely motifying. Oh, and all of this went down in front of all of his crew and his son. Poor TK. I guess he's used to things like this happening to his dad.
Tumblr media
Things only get worse when the 126 end up responding to an emergency at Kendra Kendra's home. When Owen and company arrive on the scene, they find Brett with his arm pinned underneath his vehicle. The 126 manage to free him and he is taken to the ambulance. Kendra arrives and rides to the hospital with her husband leaving Owen even more confused about his situation. A few days later, Kendra arrives at the firehouse with a chef and prepares lunch for the 126. Owen opens up to her about how uncomfortable he is being the third party in her relationship. Kendra assures him things are fine and that she and her husband aren't intimate anymore but Owen decides to break things off with her.
Tumblr media
The 126 end up responding to another emergency at Kendra's home. This time they find her husband Brett frozen solid in one of those cryotherapy chambers. Judd and Paul manage to take him out of it. Owen takes his pulse but doesn't find one. He then decides to do CPR on the poor guy and this is where the episode turned into a horror show. When Owen starts doing chest compressions, he literally crushes and shatters Brett's chest. Well, if there were any doubts as to whether or not he was still alive, I think this definitely confirmed things. Owen is horrified and so is the rest of the 126. Kendra, however, tells Owen she is feeling pretty numb about it all. Owen takes Kendra back to her place since obviously she can't go back to her house. At the end of the episode, he receives a call from Gabriel Reyes (Benito Martinez), Gabriel informs Owen that Kendra's husband's death is being investigated because there was poison found in his body. Did Kendra kill her husband? I guess we will get the answer to that question next episode! Now, let's talk about Grace!
Tumblr media
We get the return of Grace's parents - Benjamin and Denice Williams (William Allen Young and Barbara Eve Harris). It's been two years since Grace has seen her parents and they are so excited to spend time with Baby Charlie. We learn that Grace has been avoiding her parents because she is still angry about her father's infidelity which was revealed in season 2. Grace confides in Judd that she finds it hard to be around her mom knowing that she is unaware of what her dad has done. When the babysitter calls to let Grace know she will not be available, Benjamin and Denice offer to look after baby Charlie. Grace is reluctant but Judd agrees they can watch after Charlie.
Tumblr media
When her parents arrive the following day, Grace takes her father to the side to let him know that she is glad he is watching after Charlie because it means that he will be saying out of trouble. Benjamin is clearly hurt by this but I really can't blame Grace for being upset at him.
Tumblr media
At the dispatch center, Grace's coworker receives an emergency call from Denice. Benjamin is on the floor and is unresponsive. Grace commandeers the call but her mother is much too distressed to follow her instructions. Thankfully Grace's boss takes over the conversation. Grace heads over to the hospital and we learn that her father has had a massive heart attack. Denice seems unbothered by her husband's medical situation and assures Grace that everything will be fine. However, Grace thinks she should call her sisters, Ashley and Lisa, because things aren't looking too good for her dad. Denice agrees that they should be contacted.
Benjamin makes it through surgery but is on a ventilator. Grace goes to his room but can't bring herself to go inside because she feels immense guilt over the last thing she said to him. Denice overhears Grace talking with Judd and reveals that she's known all along about her husband's infidelities. Denice tells Grace that while it took some time, she has been able to forgive her husband and encourages Grace to do the same.
Tumblr media
Grace enters the room and talks to her comatose father. She starts singing Charlie Chaplin's "Smile". She is then joined by her two younger sisters, Ashley and Lisa, who are played by Sierra McClain's real life sisters - China Anne McClain and Lauryn Alisa McClain. By the way, fun fact: Sierra, China, and Lauryn have a singing group called the McClain Sisters.
Tumblr media
When the three sisters finish their song, Benjamin regains consciousness and he and Grace finally make peace. I must say, even though I enjoyed Owen's storyline, I was really impressed with Grace's. Sierra did such an amazing job in all her scenes. The scene where she couldn't go into her father's room absolutely broke my heart. It was so fun to see Grace get to shine in this episode. We've gotten a lot of her being Judd's supportive wife. I'm glad we got to see him step back and be the supportive husband.
Overall, this episode was fun! I laughed. I cried at certain points. I nearly threw up my dinner when Owen obliterated that man's chest cavity. If I were Owen, I would need a lot of therapy after doing that. If I were his crew, I'd need therapy after seeing that. The fact that Kendra seemed nonplussed about her husband being shattered into pieces leads me to believe that she's not who she appears to be. I swear if she turns out to be some sort of serial killer or a woman who likes to kill off her husband, then I'm going to suggest that Owen join a monastery. Owen Strand has the absolute worst luck when it comes to women on this show. He just needs to be single. As for Grace - I'm happy we've got to see more of her and her family. I thought it was brilliant casting having her sisters play her sisters on the show. For four seasons I'd assumed that Grace was an only child but it's really cool to know that she's a big sister. Now that we've met her whole family, I hope we get to meet more of Judd's. This episode ended with a bit of a cliffhanger and I predict that Captain Strand is going to be in peril next episode. Well, until next time ...

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots who fought in WWII. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces. The name applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.
All African American military pilots who trained in the US trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated at Tuskegee University. The group included five Haitians from the Haitian Air Force and one pilot from Trinidad. It included a Hispanic or Latino airman born in the Dominican Republic.
